While the sisters have wildly different personalities and styles, they complement each other beautifully and have built a successful business together. “We freeze fat,” teases Jessica. “We are the No. 1 CoolSculpting provider in Arizona, the No. 4 account in the nation and have a ManCave. Men have fat too, right?” Melissa tags Jessica as the quick start for all their projects. Jessica says her sister is the contemplative one who thinks before she jumps. “I always laugh saying if I was in this business by myself, it would never get off the ground, and if Jessica owned it by herself it would take off but then burst into flames,” Melissa says. “At the end of the day, we both lead with heart and come from an authentic and genuine place,” Jessica says. Their fashion sense is as different as their personalities. Melissa says her sister is low-maintenance, and on a typical day she’d reach for scrubs or jeans. Jessica describes her sister’s style as annoyingly good. 18

“She effortlessly puts things together and they work,” Jessica says. “Whenever we travel together, I pack nothing and ask her to borrow all the cute stuff. Her house is elegant and beautiful, and she pays close attention to details. It’s the same at Bodify.” Despite their differences, they agree about how much they mean to each other as sisters and co-workers. They laugh, finish each other’s sentences and have complete trust in each other. They’re also passionate about their work. “We always wanted to own a business together. Our passions never collided until CoolSculpting,” Jessica says. “Nothing makes me happier than helping people shift their self-perception and confidence. The world needs people who uplift.”

inspiring women share their secrets to success

Take things one at a time. I always prioritize what is most important at any given time, put my full focus behind it and see that task through to the fullest of mine and my team's ability."

Chevy Humphrey Chevy Humphrey, the Hazel A. Hare President and CEO of Arizona Science Center, has held six different positions since starting her journey in 1998. Chevy has been in her current role for 14 years and while she wears several hats, ultimately, she and her team aim to bring the most engaging and inspiring content and experiences to the Center.

WHAT ADVICE INSPIRED YOU? Hazel A. Hare was a constant mentor in my life for 21 years. She taught me that it was a leader’s role to make the difficult decisions before you are forced to. She cautioned me that it would be lonely at times, but that it was critical to always, always do the right thing. She also reminded me to keep my feet on the ground which was a lesson that my parents also instilled in me at an early age. But the best advice I ever received is to empower others, and that is what I strive to do each day. WHAT LIFE LESSON DO YOU WISH YOU KNEW SOONER? It doesn’t matter who came up with the idea, but more so how that idea is executed with focus, precision and passion. The second is that you can’t do it alone. The people you surround yourself with are tantamount to your personal success and to the success of whatever mission or objective you are collectively trying to achieve. WHAT’S YOUR SECRET TO SUCCESS? I believe that complacency equates to mediocrity, so the secret to my success, and the success of Arizona Science Center and our team, is to continually push the envelope. If you don’t feel uncomfortable from time to time, you’re not growing, so I always strive to look for that next level even if it makes me a bit uncomfortable at the time. Visit AZScience.org. 22

Joan Dominique Joan Dominique, 23, a resident of both Paradise Valley and New York City, is a fashion-design entrepreneur, CEO and creative director of Maison Joan Dominique. She created a luxury men’s designer label that makes digital-bespoke, custom-sized footwear and menswear. Her company recently presented at Paris Fashion Week with Oxford Fashion Studio for the Fall/Winter 2019 season.

WHAT DO YOU DO FOR INSPIRATION? I choose to step outside of my comfort zone. I have discovered when you try new things it is fascinating how creative you can become. WHAT’S YOUR SECRET TO SUCCESS? Never bite off more than you can chew. I have seen many fail because they take on too much too quickly and make business promises they are not able to keep. Your word is the most powerful asset you have if you put value to it. WHAT’S YOUR ADVICE FOR ACHIEVING GOALS? Not everyone can see the vision that only you were provided. If you want what the 1 percent have, you must be willing to do what the 99 percent won’t. WHAT ADVICE INSPIRED YOU? My parents are entrepreneurs, and at a young age, they instilled the idea that everyone had to start from somewhere. No one began at the top; they had to work to get there. I would always be afraid to begin because I made myself feel inadequate. But, my parents—they’re go-getters—would only tell me: just do it. Once they pushed me to start, I have never stopped. It was the best thing that ever happened to me. Explore MaisonJoanDominque.com.

LIFE LESSONS

(C ON TI N U ED)

Julie

Laura Greenwood + Julie Karnes Laura Greenwood, the co-founder of Arcadia Counseling Center, and Julie Karnes, her business partner, are licensed psychotherapists who work to empower their clients by mobilizing their strengths and enhancing their coping skills to help them live more fulfilling lives. Laura has 18 years of experience, and Julie more than 15, providing counseling to adolescents, families, adults and couples.

WHAT LIFE LESSON DO YOU WISH YOU KNEW SOONER? Laura: I wish I had known that success is not linear. It would ebb and flow and is up to me to define. I also wish I had the ability to distinguish self-doubt from reality. Julie: It doesn’t matter what others think; it matters what you think. We have much more control over our perspective than we may think and feel at times, making difficult situations much easier. HOW DO YOU RECHARGE YOUR BATTERIES? Laura: I am a big proponent of self-care. I recharge through running and swimming, regular practice of my faith, quiet time alone, as well as connecting with family and friends. Julie: I try to fit in moments of meditation, imagery and exercise wherever possible, which truly isn't much due to my schedule. However, I find even a bit can affect you exponentially. WHAT’S THE MOST CHALLENGING JOB YOU’VE HAD? Laura: Hands down the most challenging job I’ve ever had is being a mother. I’ve spent my career learning how to manage and compartmentalize my own emotions so that I can remain objective with clients. Yet, I’ve found this difficult to replicate with my own children. WHAT’S YOUR ADVICE FOR ACHIEVING GOALS? Julie: Never give up. If you want it enough, you will make it happen. DO YOU HAVE ANYTHING TO ADD? Laura: I encourage people to be proactive in seeking professional help. You don’t have to be in crisis to begin. You will have created a safety net and resource for future life challenges. Check out ArcadiaCounselingCenter.com. 24

“We had an artist from Paris draw us for the label,” they said. "The brand, now carried at Total Wine, didn’t feel like work to create and has been a pleasure to promote." “We feel so blessed in this endeavor. When you have a career, you want to really love it, and we do!” Nikki says. To complete the trifecta of products that seamlessly exemplify the Bella Twins, their new beauty line truly sets women up to feel their best. step in their business development. “She was an amazing mentor and really helped us tap into the beauty world,” Brie says. Lotions, body wash and eventually simple makeup products are the goals of the Nicole and Brizee Line. “We want the line to mirror the authentic Bella Twins looks we are known for; in the ring, we are fearless, and that is how our fans perceive us. We want these same women to see our products in their dressing areas at home and have them be the motivator for them. Life isn’t easy, but let’s be there to support each other,” Brie says. It seems the sky is the limit for this ambitious duo.

“We are breaking barriers and taking our bodyslams to the boardroom!” Nikki jokes. The serious skills and natural ability to connect with women is what makes these women a testament to girl power and teaching girls to strive for more. “My favorite part of all of this has been seeing it come to life and seeing people enjoying all we are offering. When I think about being a role model, I think of making someone else feel special through any of our outlets. And in turn, they do the same for us,” Nikki says. “I think it’s special that Nikki and I are partners in

WHAT DO YOU OFTEN GET ASKED? What inspires me? My answer is the women I dress. You’re with someone and they say, "I feel comfortable in this style or fabric," and that’s impactful. DESCRIBE HOW YOUR BACKGROUND PLAYED A ROLE IN BECOMING A DESIGNER. I grew up making everything I wore in Mississippi. In that time and place, how you dressed was critically important. After college, my goal was to be a buyer for a store, but I quickly realized that I could achieve more. I saw an opportunity and started the accessory division for Liz Claiborne with a goal of making accessories for working women. This opened the door to joining business and professional women's groups which led to my passion for creating clothes appropriate for a woman’s age, image and lifestyle. TO WHAT DO YOU OWE YOUR CONTINUED SUCCESS? First is the passion of our clients for the clothes. We are a multichannel business making it easy for our clients, with 14 stores, the internet, women who sell the collection privately in their homes and some specialty retail stores. WHAT LESSONS HAVE YOU LEARNED? These days, many women want quiet luxury and want to look well-dressed, with good quality clothing that is good-fitting and travels well. They want to be identified as themselves, not have the clothes be overpowering.

If you need a little more coverage, use a foundation stick for spot coverage. + Step 2: Add a little color by pressing cream blush on the apples of your cheeks.
