All her glory. ONE OF MY FAVORITE SUMMERTIME MEMORIES IS OF MY LATE FATHER AND ME, BACK IN THE COUNTRYSIDE OF NEW YORK STATE, SKIRTING THROUGH TRAFFIC ON OUR WAY TO A FIREWORK SHOW. We’d do the same thing year after year on this particular day—July Fourth. His police officer badge and his sparse gray hair helped us get a close parking spot. We’d rifle through a messy trunk for the things we needed—blankets, sweatshirts, camp chairs, maybe a flashlight, and some snacks. We’d mosey over to our hilltop and spread a blanket down where we’d prop the chairs and watch as families chose the right spot to enjoy the show together. He always had me carry a cylinder of small American flags, to which I’d later be embarrassed when he’d ask me for them, to hand out to strangers. Now, as an adult, I nearly tear up over this memory. I remember seeing the joy

Swim, Bike, Run HOW THE ZOOTOWN KIDS TRIATHLON GOT OFF THE BLOCK ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY ADDIE MELVIN

SOMETIMES A GREAT IDEA STARTS WITH A BOY, A BIKE, SWIMMING TRUNKS, AND RUNNING SHOES. Porter Melvin, age 9, has always been active. He loves to partake in triathlons, easily transitioning between activities and running for the medal at the finish line. So when Missoula didn’t have a triathlon for kids, Porter suggested to his mom that there be one in the future. Mom, Wendy Melvin, began the Zootown Kids Triathlon in 2016, granting the request of her sporty son and opening the door for a flood of boys and girls between the ages of 5 and 12 to participate each summer. “I ran the Missoula Kids Marathon for eight years. That was a really important thing to do for the community,” said Wendy, passionately speaking about the channels in which our kids have access to use their copious amounts of energy. “Triathlons, as a whole, are on the decline and so we need to get kids involved in healthy lifestyle sports again,” said Wendy. On a long list of activities for our youth, triathlons are multifunctional. They are something to prepare for mentally and physically, and they challenge the body in different ways, all while instilling an interest in competition and leading a healthy life.

14

Missoula Valley Lifestyle | July 2018

“It’s huge. They cross-train, they aren’t just doing one thing…it’s better for their bodies,” said Wendy. Wendy is hopeful that the current excitement for the Kids Triathlon has the endurance to move the needle for triathlons in the future, and perhaps inspire some to stick with it into their adulthood. “Last year, I met with Missoula Parks and Recreation and they had a triathlon camp to help prepare kids for this event,” said Wendy, noting that Missoula Parks and Recreation even hired a triathlon coach to aid the kids along the way.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR WHEN: Sunday, July 22

“The most rewarding part is seeing so many kids involved,” said Wendy. She laughed. “I try to get as many peple involved as possible.” But it seems that being supportive and active are one in the same for

LET’S FACE IT: THE WINTERS IN MISSOULA ARE LONG AND DIFFICULT. Once summer comes around, people are ready to get out and play. BONNER PARK Located in the heart of the university district at 1600 Ronald Ave., Bonner Park encompasses a wide expanse of welcoming green grass with features for young and young-at-heart. Bring the kids to play on the unique playground equipment from the rope feature to the ADA-accessible zip-line. All ages can cool off in the splash deck. If it's relaxation you seek, pack a blanket, a good book, and some wine and cheese, and claim your spot under one of the many towering shade trees. Be sure to visit on a Wednesday night through August 15 because the Missoula City Band offers free concerts starting at 8 p.m. in the band shelter. Great music with a great backdrop is what you get at Kettlehouse Amphitheater. Located on the banks of the Blackfoot River in Bonner, the amphitheater gives concertgoers the thrill of seeing live local and national artists in the perfect Missoula setting. The second season began with a sold-out show featuring Bon Iver, but don’t fret if you missed out on this one. Numerous shows are scheduled throughout the summer featuring the Pixies, Trambled by Turtles, and Blondie. The season ends on September 11 with Trombone Shorty’s Voodoo Threauxdown. Choice of seating includes the pit, stadium seating, or the open lawn at the back of the venue. Since the amphitheater is a collaboration between the owners of the Top Hat and Kettlehouse, tasty food and drink are available for consumption. Once the snow melts, Missoula’s personal ski slope transforms into a summer playground where you can explore the green mountain slopes on two feet or two wheels. Take the Grizzly lift to the top of the mountain to explore miles of mountain bike and hiking trails as well as a folf course. For extreme adventure seekers, fly down the mountain on the four zip lines. Try your hand at a Diggler mountain scooter, a cross between a mountain bike and a scooter that can be ridden on any of the mountain bike trails. Right outside of Missoula, history buffs can explore the only confirmed campsite on the Lewis and Clark Trail at this state park in Lolo. Archaeological digs have produced evidence that the famous duo and their expedition camped here along the banks of Lolo Creek. Start your visit at the museum to learn about the expedition as well as the Native Americans and early settlers who called this valley home. Once outside, follow the interpretive trail under towering cottonwoods to see the likely location of the campsite. Nature lovers will also find the forest to be the perfect place to bird watch. GIVING BACK

Out of the Box Susan Reneau on left

DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION PASS DOWN PRIDE TO OUR YOUTH ARTICLE CHELSEA LYN AGRO PHOTOGRAPHY SUSAN CAMPBELL RENEAU Dating back to 1890, Daughters of the American Revolution was formed through a blaze of patriotism to honor patriots who served in the American Revolution. Their mission? To perpetuate the memory and spirit of our veterans, to educate future generations, and to cherish, maintain, and extend the institutions of American freedom—fostering a true love of country. The Daughters within our treasure state rallied together in assembly-line fashion to create 250 patriotic education boxes at the 115th State Daughters of the Revolution Conference, held this year in Missoula. The first box was hand-delivered to Valley Christian School to fourth and fifth graders, and presented to Principal Cheryl Nurse, teachers, and students by Jane Lee Hamman and Susan Campbell Reneau. Inside, children found a heap of patriotism: a binder filled with American history information, two copies of the Declaration of Independence and U.S. Constitution, a CD of DAR Kate Duncan Smith's fourth graders singing their favorite songs, and a second CD titled "Songs of Liberty" by DAR Charmaine Lindgren and musician Rick Wine. There, too, was a portrait print of George Washington and information about self-governance of The People of the Long House, along with a calendar listing of significant historical dates to encourage students to research the happenings of each one. These little boxes traveled far and wide within our state borders, spreading with them a rich history of our land and its people, while igniting an interest in our freedom for our youth.

SUSAN CAMPBELL RENEAU SHARES A FEW LIMBS OF HER FAMILY TREE

FAITHFUL SEMPER FIDELIS. By definition, it means "always faithful," and it's the phrase U.S. Marines always say. Susan, being a daughter to a Marine, lives a life in his honor. She's a Daughter of the American Revolution and enjoys working to enrich the lives of our veterans. Here, she shares with us the memory of the men in her life who have served our country.

PHOTO 1 U.S. Army Specialist, Jack Reneau— Susan’s husband—on guard duty in Vietnam before the Tet Offensive.

PHOTO 2 Jack Reneau’s father, Red Reneau, as a private in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

PHOTO 3 Lieutenant Frederick Hollister Campbell, U.S. Marine Corps, Susan’s father.

PHOTO 4 Jack Reneau’s grandfather, Bill, in his World War I Canadian Army uniform. At only 16, Bill was removed from the army shortly after this photo was taken per the demands of his mother.

PHOTO 5 U.S. Army Specialist, Jack Reneau, in Vietnam with his parachute. He jumped out of airplanes for fun on the weekends.
