ELECTRIC SUVS ARE HERE TO STAY ARTICLE TOM BRIDGES | PHOTOGRAPHY AUDI USA

16

McKinney & Prosper Lifestyle | April 2019

ELECTRIC VEHICLES CONTINUE TO IMPROVE BY LEAPS AND BOUNDS. For example, the Audi e-tron, with ample space for everyday life, long-range capability, exhilarating performance ( 0-60 mph in 5.5 seconds) and quattro® all-wheel drive, this is way more than an electric car. Arriving this spring, it is the first electric SUV built with Audi DNA. And no longer does one have to consider electric cars for short trips around town. With a nationwide network of 16,000-plus charging stations, hybrid vehicles may now complete nearly any itinerary. And Electrify America plans to add to the network with more than 480 stations with 2,000-plus dispensers by the end of 2019. Plus, Audi e-tron owners will receive approximately 2,000 miles of pure electric driving, at no additional cost, from Electrify America sites over a four-year period. To give you a sense of your travel abilities, just from a 30-minute charge through one of the high-speed public chargers, you can travel about 160 miles. Audi is also collaborating with Amazon to make your home charging station setup as easy as possible. The e-tron includes a home charging capsule that can fully charge its battery in about nine hours from a 240 volt/50 amp outlet—so you can wake up to a fresh charge every day. Supporting renewable energy is also becoming much easier due to companies such as Arcadia Power, a new renewable energy service provider that helps you tap into solar and wind energy sources without purchasing or installing equipment on your home or rental. So, let’s continue to keep spring green, and the next time you consider buying a vehicle, think electric. As you can see, vehicles are now available that provide you the utility and freedom as never before. Learn more about the Audi e-tron at

MCKINNEY ROOTS GROWING AND PROVIDING FOOD FOR THOSE WHO ARE FOOD-DEPRIVED ARTICLE TOM BRIDGES PHOTOGRAPHY CHRISTIE CONNELL, AZURE PHOTOGRAPHY

“MCKINNEY ROOTS IS A 100 PERCENT FOOD DONATION GARDEN FOR THE CITY OF MCKINNEY. We supply naturally grown fresh produce to the food-insecure by distributing them to local services and schools.” Many in Collin County may not realize just how many hungry people there are among us. When you look at the stats on children alone, it is staggering. Thus, the need for heroes like Michelle McCarley and Clarissa Bleecker, the directors of McKinney Roots, along with the volunteers who are helping this organization, as their motto says: “Keep Going—Keep Growing.” This team operates on a 5-acre farm with raised beds while expanding their use of ground beds. As they are able, they want to create a hot house, an orchard and a hydroponic area. Currently, they have organically grown fruit trees and berry bushes, but they don’t stop there. They also have chickens that produce dozens of eggs a day. McKinney Roots partners with organizations focused on feeding the food-deprived and with schools so children can increase their ability to not only attend school more routinely due to being healthier, but also be more productive. Lack of nutrition for anyone is bad enough, but children need the vitamins and nutrients from these products to grow well both physically and mentally. McKinney Roots is a 501(c)(3) charitable

HORSEMANSHIP FACILITY IS CALMING. The rolling pastures and the horses in them make you forget you are in one of the fastest growing parts of the country. The fact that you know that the group of individuals who formed this organization, support it and volunteer help many people in many ways also seems to calm your soul. Bill and Priscilla Darling and their daughter, Landon Darling Schneider, founded ManeGait in 2007. As a 501(c) (3) organization, they offer therapeutic equine-based programs to 150 riders. The stables include 25 horses (including two miniature who primarily pull the carriage). Nine PATH-certified instructors are on staff. Then there are the great 280 volunteers who donate their time, energy and love to the program. Therapeutic horsemanship has really evolved over the past 50 years and has become recognized as one of the best therapies for people with disabilities, of any age, to help overcome their difficulties. Programs offered at ManeGait are Therapeutic Riding, Therapeutic Carriage Driving, GaitWay to the Brain, ManeGait to Freedom and a PATH INT’L Registered Instructor On-Site Workshop and Certifications. The Therapeutic Riding Program works as the movement pattern while riding a horse is similar to the human gait. This motion influences the rider’s body, leading to increased flexibility, core strength, motor skills and intellectual function. The Carriage Driving Program offers similar benefits for those who may have allergies to a horse or may have a disability that prevents them from mounting the horse. GaitWay to the Brain is a program developed at ManeGait that is the first of its kind. It expands the benefits of the equine therapy by adding other mentally focused aspects such as music therapy, hand-eye coordination and other means to enhance brain-building activities on individuals with physical, cognitive, sensory and behavioral disabilities. Supported by neurological research, it is well documented to provide these benefits.

Some of the volunteers

ManeGait to Freedom was initiated in 2015 and is a program serving wounded veterans and first responders. This program also helps these injured heroes build a community together. The horses utilized are chosen for their calm demeanor. With each rider, there are three support personnel. A side walker is there to assure the safety of the rider should they start to fall. A horse leader holds a tether to the horse’s head to help minimize any risk of a sudden movement by the horse. And an instructor provides directions for both the riders and the horses. So, as the many riders who have written wonderful testimonials to the benefits they receive at ManeGait say… Join in. Mount up. Ride tall. Learn more at ManeGait.org. FROM SOLAR, WIND AND GEOTHERMAL ENERGY FOR YOUR HOME TO GREEN ROOFS AND ROOF GARDENS, THERE ARE EVER-INCREASING WAYS OF MAKING YOUR HOME, NEW OR OLD, MORE ENERGY-EFFICIENT. The ways of maximizing the energy efficiency of your new home or your remodel project continuously increases. Consider the use of reclaimed wood for doors, beams and more. Not only do they add a certain warmth to your home, but their use also diminishes the need to reduce other resources. Various forms of insulation can reach a factor of R60 in your attic by using a blown-in cellulose made from 100 percent recycled newsprint. Fiberglass-framed windows are low in maintenance and higher in insulating value while offering a better life-cycle cost than vinyl-clad windows. Don’t consider energy efficient-products alone. For example, David Yowell Construction also aims to be mindful of the total environment when constructing and remodeling homes. “Our strategy has been mostly through efficiencies regarding energy usage in the building materials." David says. "The more efficient we are, the less energy we use. We also implement the use of low-V.O.C. [volatile organic compounds] paints in the interior of the home and work with the customer if ecological additions are requested. "Other examples of being environmentally friendly would be the re-utilization of reclaimed materials such as wood siding and ship-lap siding. Reclaiming materials is a way to keep products out of our local landfills. We are open and excited to integrate any environmentally friendly products our customers may desire.” Whether creating a new home or a major remodeling project, consider your options for not only the products used but your builder as well. Make sure your builder is someone like David Yowell Construction, who will increase efficiency in all aspects of the project.

THERE IS A $91 MILLION BOND THAT WILL BE USED OVER THE NEXT 5 TO 10 YEARS FOR PARKS AND RECREATION ALONE.

A

S MCKINNEY’S CITY MANAGER, PAUL GRIMES, AND PROSPER’S TOWN

M A N AG E R ,

JEFFERSON,

WILL

HARLAN

TELL

YOU,

KEEPING THE ECOLOGICAL BALANCE IN THEIR RAPIDLY GROWING COMMUNITIES IS A REAL CHALLENGE. However, and luckily for the citizens, they both seem to rel-

ish the opportunity to not just take on that task, but to do it in a way that will preserve these communities for future generations. Maintaining the character of the communities is at the forefront of

both their minds as they work with their respective mayors and city councils to achieve adequate funding to accomplish all that is required to meet these lofty goals. “About $200 million is needed over the next 10 to 20 years for parks and acreage for the city," Paul says. "There is a $91 million bond that will be used over the next 5 to 10 years for parks and recreation alone.” But then he smiles when asked what he likes most about the job and acknowledges that he set out to help people and creating a community for future generations to enjoy is a great joy for him. In 2018, both cities earned prominent Scenic City Certification. This is the only certification program of its kind in the U.S. to devise a comprehensive set of model standards for the design and development of public roadways and public spaces into one evaluation program. But they aren’t stopping at just creating the green spaces. For example, Prosper has initiated a program that addresses an issue most of us don’t even realize exists. When you throw away a plastic bottle of water that still is partially filled, three things happen. First, the water is wasted. Second, the plastic container can now not be recycled. Third, the bottle and water both end up in a landfill. So the Release, Renew and Recycle Environmental Collection Program was created. Planter boxes are positioned for anyone to empty their water bottle into, nourishing the plant life. Positioned conveniently is a bin for them to toss their empty plastic bottle to be recycled. And the City of McKinney recently installed solar-powered smart waste and recycling systems downtown to reduce waste collections and operating expenses. As part of a pilot program, the systems were installed at four locations in the downtown square area to promote a clean, green, litter-free public space. As with McKinney’s theme of “Unique by Nature,” Prosper has initiated another program that tracks the growth of the city’s “green canopy.” Having been named as Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation in 2018, the city wants to make sure it keeps the growth of the canopy created by trees in all areas by mapping and evaluating the canopy frequently.

going green OUR HACKS TO LIVING SUSTAINABLY IN STYLE ARTICLE NICOLETTE MARTIN

DID YOU KNOW THAT IN 2016, WORLD PLASTIC PRODUCTION TOTALED AROUND 335 MILLION METRIC TONS, ACCORDING TO THE EARTH DAY NETWORK? Although you probably can’t singlehandedly change the environmental toll of the amount of plastic pollution that comes from that kind of number, we’ve rounded up a few simple ways you can curb your consumption and do your part toward a healthier environment.

R E D U C E We’re saying goodbye to plastic wrap, Ziploc bags and aluminum foil, and hello to reusable wax food wraps you can wrap around anything your hungry (or full) heart desires. Compare this handmade version to Bee’s Wrap sustainable food storage.

supplies

The next time you ask for a plastic straw, grab plastic bags at the grocery store or buy a bottle of water on your way to the gym (we’re all guilty of something!), you should also know that roughly half of the annual plastic production’s lifespan ends after just a single use. And most single-use plastics aren’t even making it to landfills, let alone being recycled. Instead, the equivalent of one garbage truck full of plastic is being dumped into the world’s oceans every minute. Curb your single-use plastic consumption with these reusable counterparts.

HOT SPOT

Ecologically for the Birds

ARTICLE TOM BRIDGES | PHOTOGRAPHY CHRISTIE CONNELL, AZURE PHOTOGRAPHY

WILDBIRDS UNLIMITED RAISED BY PARENTS WHO WERE TEACHERS, WITH HER FATHER TEACHING BIOLOGY, CHERYL MILLER, WHO MANY REFER TO AS “BIRDIE,” HAS ALWAYS LOVED NATURE AND FEEDING THE BIRDS. She says she has always had a Hopper feeder, and it remains her favorite product. Birdie now seems to have found her calling through her Wildbirds Unlimited shop in McKinney. A retired teacher, Birdie wanted to do something that would allow her to keep actively involved in the community while also allowing her to have time for herself. One day, when she made the 90-minute trek to the closest WBU shop in Dallas, she realized a real need for such a shop locally existed. Fate was on her side. WBU had opened the opportunity in McKinney only two days prior. The shop offers feeders, feed and other beautiful related items for the home. Cheryl is justifiably proud of what she has accomplished. Obviously, Birdie’s instincts were spot-on and her shop had an outstanding first calendar year. She is a Certified Backyard Bird Specialist, which requires hours of classes and training. All but one of her staff, most of whom have been with her since opening in May 2017, are also certified. “The Bird Crew” obviously loves what they do and are driven to become “wildly successful.” While the hardest part for the former teacher was learning how to become a retail presence in the area, it is something she has obviously done well. She feels her business fits well with McKinney’s “Unique by Nature” theme and looks forward to continuing to help our feathered friends. She is a board member for Crepe Myrtle Trails and the Heard Museum and is involved in and supports Blackland Prairie Raptor Center and the Prairie & Timber Audubon Society.
