Hello, Foodies!

CONTRIBUTING PHOTOGRAPHERS

Flourish Branding Photography

LOVELAND, BERTHOUD AND JOHNSTOWN, ARE YOU HUNGRY? We’re sure you will be when you read—or should we say devour—this issue, the most droolworthy one of the year: the Foodie issue! We spent the last few months scouring the streets in search of the most delicious bites that our community has to offer, and we found more than enough material to fill these pages. Narrowing down all the sensational local flavors and global cuisines in the area was no easy task, but we are confident this issue is an accurate representation of our emerging reputation as a true dining destination. While we don’t like to play favorites, the Foodie issue is near and dear to our hearts. Food is not only nourishing (and delicious) but it also brings people together—whether it’s a special anniversary dinner, a much-needed lunch break with coworkers, a friend’s birthday party or even a casual weeknight meal with family. Food is often considered one of life’s great pleasures. Speaking of life's greatest pleasures and bringing people together, we would like

LOVELAND’S DOWNTOWN

DISTRICT. Since opening on Feb. 1, 2013, Mo’Betta Gumbo has seen the downtown district grow every year. He recalls the struggles of starting a new business. Fortunately for foodies on the Front Range, Clay has never backed down when faced with adversity, and this attitude of perseverance carries over to his business. When asked about the restaurant’s origin story, Clay responded without hesitation: “Mo’Betta Gumbo was birthed out of financial ruin.” They moved from Texas after the market crashed. The chef had been involved in a commercial development. The perfect storm occurred, and they took hit after hit. In 2012, Clay found himself selling gumbo on the side of the road in the Texas heat, just to pay utilities. It was while doing this that he realized that his gumbo could be his family’s ticket to a better life. Clay and Tina had discussed moving away from Texas for some time. They chose Colorado so that their family could slow down and enjoy life more. Clay borrowed $20,000, and they set out to make a new home for themselves and their gumbo. They found the perfect location on the corner of Fourth Street and Cleveland Avenue in Loveland, but things weren’t easy starting out. In September 2013, the region saw a historically damaging flood that weakened sales. In 2014, the

yet another obstacle, Mo’Betta Gumbo was once again up and running. Clay and Tina have not forgotten the roots of their success and use Mo’Betta Gumbo to give back to the community and to fight injustices. Whether it’s purchasing Christmas trees for single parents, donating to Toys for Tots or working hand in hand with Meals on Wheels, Clay has found so many ways to give back to the community that he loves. “Our restaurant is about building relationships. We have woven ourselves into the community and have become synonymous with downtown Loveland,” he says. Tina remains the primary caretaker of their daughter, Zöe, who suffers from cerebral palsy among other health issues, but when she is able to make it down to the restaurant, she is the perfect hostess, washing dishes, wiping tables and loving on her guests. Taking a seat at Mo’Betta Gumbo means more than supporting a family business. When you eat here, you are supporting a community. Foodies of Northern Colorado feel fortunate to have such a wonderful Cajun eatery so close.

After-dinner drinks or an after-movie nightcap—either way, the ambiance of the bar is quite alluring. What’s more enticing is the extensive beer, wine and cocktail menus. Perhaps a local beer, a wine on draft or a top-shelf drink handcrafted and expertly prepared is just the thing to top off an evening of perfection. You can enjoy your beverage at the bar, at a table or by the oversized garage door windows that look out over the Foundery, as they are kept open when the weather is nice. Wherever you choose to enjoy yourself, the atmosphere is relaxed and chic and certainly worth taking some time to sit back and enjoy.

AKA KITCHEN DISHES ON FAVORITES

Appetizer Taste-Off ARTICLE CHRISTA SHIVELY PHOTOGRAPHY FLOURISH BRANDING PHOTOGRAPHY

THIS FAMILY-OWNED RESTAURANT SHARES A ROOF WITH ROCK COAST BREWERY, MAKING IT A UNIQUE AND WELCOMING PLACE TO HAVE A FAMILY DINNER, CONDUCT A BUSINESS MEETING OR JUST RELAX AND HANG OUT WITH FRIENDS. Serving beer brewed in-house, along with wine, cocktails and locally sourced food, AKA Kitchen is any food lover's dream spot. The original concept was to only serve breakfast and lunch, but when they found their current building, formerly Adelita's, the ideas began to take off to include not just dinner, but an entire brewery as well. The large space allowed for a larger collaboration of ideas. So what does AKA stand for? Exactly what you would think it means, “also known as,” which ties to how they view the food they make. AKA Kitchen brings a new twist to the table with how they re-envision food. They are inspired by traditional dishes, then work to create a completely different taste than what is normally expected by using new, fresh and distinctly different ingredients. What appears to be something classic is reincarnated into something delightfully original. 22

Loveland & South Lifestyle | October 2019

A lot of places advertise how fresh their food is, so what makes this place stand out? Their food comes from local farms, which means their menu changes based on what is available nearby. Their seasonal menus keep a few favorites, but for the most part change with the weather. Their new fall menu will be dropping the first week of October, which sounds like the perfect time to find a new favorite dish. There is so much that makes this place unique, one of those things being their focus on building community through both the brewery and restaurant in one centrally located place. Each side brings a different crowd, and together they have built a truly diverse and incredible community of people who call this place their own. The atmosphere is fun and high-energy with live music featured almost every Saturday while also being a go-to hangout that is family-friendly. AKA Kitchen and Rock Coast Brewery enjoy giving back to their community in a lot of ways. If you make it out to the Longview Marathon and Half Marathon brought to you by Gnar Runners and Sweetheart City Racing, you will be sure to see AKA Kitchen at the finish line handing out their tasty hummus and veggies to all the racers. We decided to have a few people give us their opinions on some of the appetizers. There was a lot of discussion about how the Parmesan chips were made with such good-quality Parmesan, the veggies and hummus tasted fresh and were a nice light snack, the hummus changes four times a year and is a really nice, healthy option. The winner, however, were the nachos.

Kelly adds that it can also be used to detect early heat and vascular changes for conditions such as diabetes and other illnesses. Dr. Wisniewski believes that everyone deserves their health and should be able to choose what’s best for them. “Ultimately, personal risk factors should determine an individual’s road of diagnostics,” he says. Gateway Natural Medicine & Diagnostic Center understands that medicine should be catered to the individual. Thermography assists in putting the patient in control of their care. “A doctor should be there to inform, not to dictate,” Dr. Wisniewski says. What can someone expect when they walk into the office? Gateway Natural Medicine & Diagnostic Center offers a comfortable waiting area with complimentary beverages. The diagnostic rooms are bright and welcoming. Each thermography patient is given a choice between Dr. Wisniewski or Kelly, depending on comfort and preference. Both are certified thermography technicians, so each patient can rest assured that they will be taken care of from check-in to check-out. New patients are given a 90-minute session to allow for consultation. If a patient is female, there is always another female staff member in the room to add to the comfort of the overall experience. Bringing a friend or family member is also a welcome option. Once the patient has acclimated to the temperature-controlled room, the patient will simply stand in front of the camera as it reads the temperature variations in the body—no poking or prodding, completely non-invasive. The care and service that the Wisniewskis bring to their practice is evident. “From the minute you call to make an appointment until you check out, you will get the best from us,” Kelly says. 28

DO YOU HAVE

MGD?

IF your eyes get red, seem to water excessively, feel scratchy or your vision fluctuates you probably do!

Most people diagnosed with Dry Eye actually have symptoms caused by MGD. Meibomain gland dysfunction is one of the underlying causes of dry eye. The tear glands in the eyelids become blocked and the surface of the eye is left exposed to the dry Colorado air. Dr Hulme Dry Eye Center treats MGD with the LipiFlow device that utilizes Thermal Pulsation to direct gentle heat and massage to remove blockages from the meibomian glands. The treatment is designed to restore the natural oil flow to the tear film that covers the eye’s surface.
