Thankful WHAT GOES THROUGH YOUR MIND WHEN YOU THINK OF THANKSGIVING? It's a holiday steeped in traditions: turkey, stuffing, big family gatherings, the Thanksgiving Day parade and maybe even some football. We love what's familiar, but sometimes familiar needs an update too!

In fact, in this issue, we share some secrets about changing up your dessert from one of your aunt's famous Thanksgiving pies for a cake! And we share a few Turkey Day disaster stories from some local friends. But most of all, in this issue, we talk to people who are thankful. Chuck and Kasi Wicks are thankful to have found each other. The Redmond family of Sage Sleep is thankful they made their way to Franklin. My Friend's House organization is thankful to Willow Branch Builders for their new home. See the theme here? Active Aging Week at Avenida Cool Springs Avenida Cool Springs leads the way for Active Aging Week (AAW) in Franklin. A celebration of aging and the benefits of active living at any age, AAW showcases the capabilities of older adults as fully participating members of society. At Avenida Cool Springs, Resident Enrichment Director Nikki Jo Boston planned a series of activities that demonstrated the physical, intellectual, social, and emotional abilities of our residents. She explains, “Residents living at Avenida Cool Springs exemplify active aging in every way. Our community is vibrant and filled Maureen Madden (left) was the Grand with energy daily by those who attend our fitness classes, drawing and Prize Winner of AAW! She participated in every program during the week, painting classes, meditation sessions, music history and songwriting, including our Steps Challenge! Lois and the list goes on! For AAW we stepped it up a notch, and by no McBee (right) won our Steps Challenge accumulating a total of surprise seventy percent of our residents participated in week-long 289,000 steps. activities. To name a few, our activities ranged from a steps competition to financial bingo, a brain teaser challenge, and much more! It's exciting and fun to be a part of a community where the residents are interested in achieving whole mind-body wellness.” Resident Gary McBee explains his AAW experience at Avenida Cool Springs: “We just wrapped up Active Aging Week, and it was a successful and exciting time as we participated in a variety of activities. To mention a few, we were challenged with a list of really tough brain teasers and a week-long walking competition. Forty residents joined the steps challenge versus Avenida Lakewood and together we accumulated over 1.5 million steps! What an accomplishment for our residents here at Avenida Cool Springs to win the competition over Avenida Lakewood in Colorado! This Active Aging Week emphasizes the need for seniors of all walks of life to strive for both physical and mental fitness as a requisite for a more enjoyable and happy life. Here at Avenida Cool Springs, we remain challenged by our Resident Enrichment Director to participate in activities formulated to stimulate both physical and mental stability—everything from yoga and aquatic exercise to trivia. Needless to say, participation in these programs by our residents is essential for their well-being.”
Our 55+ active living community is now open! Visit us today to learn more. Call 615.502.2657 for more information. After video conferencing with Avenida Lakewood, Avenida Cool Springs discovers they were victorious; together they accumulated 1,614,388 steps.

In Sophie's quest to obtain the Miss Teen USA crown, she knew she needed to improve her smile. She sought the help of Dr. David Kemp, who knew he had a short window of time due to her timeline of photo shoots and the date of the national pageant. They placed Sofie’s braces on in early December 2017 and removed all of them on May 3, 2018—one week before Miss Teen USA started. That new smile helped give Sofie the confidence to earn sixth place out of 50 competitors.
to choose track or modeling. Because I was training up to four hours a day, I had developed quite a bit of muscle. He said that my body no longer fit the expected standard in the industry and that if I wanted a future in modeling, I couldn’t do track. And despite my just becoming a state champion in the long jump and knowing that scholarships were on the horizon, I quit track,” she says. “I was told I needed to change, but really it is the modeling industry that needed to change.” So she went about carving out her own path for modeling by working with her body in its natural, healthy state. In 2017, when Sofie won the Miss Tennessee Teen crown, she and her team set their goal to win the Miss Teen USA crown. And while that didn’t happen, Sofie was eventually selected to partner with Victoria’s Secret and walk the famous runway. She now is one of the world’s most sought-after models. Additionally, Sofie obtained her associate’s degree in international affairs. Her philanthropic efforts still focus on enriching the lives of underprivileged orphans from developing nations and working with children with developmental and physical disabilities. 26

GREGG
REDMOND,
CALIFORNIA
BORN
AND
RAISED,
EXPLAINED HOW A CALLING LED HIM TO MOVE TO FRANKLIN TO OPEN UP SAGE SLEEP ORGANICS. A faith-based family, they listened when it came. Comfortably retired, the Redmond family had plans to move, but they weren’t sure where to go. When his niece, also living in California, informed Gregg that she was moving to Williamson County in Tennessee, Gregg and his wife, Pam, decided to check it out. That was in the fall of 2017. He and Pam flew into Tennessee in January 2018 to meet with a real estate agent on Main Street in Franklin. Before leaving for the meeting, Gregg received an email from someone in his prayer network who had a dream that this coming season was all about the number 5 for him. “My wife, Pam, and I then left and followed our GPS, which took us down this alleyway. After we parked, we walked out to the corner of Fourth and Main, and when I looked up, I saw a restaurant. The name of the restaurant was 55 South,” Gregg says. After returning home, the couple exchanged Christmas gifts with their neighbors. One of them gave Gregg an organic pillow. The neighbor knew Gregg had issues with his neck from a car accident in 1972. “I could never get a good night’s sleep; I would always wake up. I used the pillow, and that night, I slept all night long and then the next night as well,” Gregg says. In March 2018, he went to Hawaii and brought the pillow with him. While there, he had a dream that he was standing on Main Street in Franklin with his pillow. “I asked Daddy [the name he uses for God] if he was calling us to come out of retirement and open up an organic bedding store in Franklin,” he says. Gregg knew there was a long wait for property on Main Street, but he had faith. In October, he received a call from a realtor in Franklin who was friends with the owners of Philanthropy, a faithbased clothing store located on Main Street. They were looking to give up their two smaller stores. On Jan. 1, 2019, the Redmond family took possession of the property at 434 Main St. at Five Points and opened their store. The building itself is called the Five Points Place building, which is certainly no coincidence to the Redmond’s. Besides mattresses and pillows, Sage Sleep Organics carries bedding, candles, oils and other organic products for the home. “We sell product all day, we pray for people every day, and lives are changed in our store every day,” Gregg says.

Forever Grateful NEWLYWEDS KASI AND CHUCK WICKS SHARE THEIR LOVE STORY
ARTICLE MARIA DINOIA | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED IT’S EASY TO BE AROUND KASI AND CHUCK WICKS. They’re kind and fun and madly in love with each other. In short, they’re contagious. When Chuck talks about how they were drawn to each other, you can’t help but smile. “I knew of her as the really pretty, curly blonde-headed girl. I would always see her at industry events. I was like, ‘Who is that girl?’ So I started flirting with her on Instagram. And once we started dating, it was ‘go’ from day one. We were pretty much inseparable.” After getting engaged during a romantic getaway at Canada’s Fairmont Chateau in Lake Louise, the couple married last July in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, surrounded by family and friends, including Kasi’s brother country singer Jason Aldean. “Seeing him for the first time walking down the aisle was an emotion I’ve never felt,” Kasi says. “I really tried to hold it together.” Chuck has his own favorite memory of their wedding day, adding, “She was breathtaking. I was overcome with emotion. I lost it.” But they weren’t the only ones whose emotions were overflowing. “The other unexpected part that I will never forget was my 8-year-old daughter. She got so emotional when we were saying our vows. Her being so little, I didn’t realize it would impact her in that way,” Kasi shares. Now that they’ve been married for a few months, what are the plans for their first Thanksgiving together as a married couple?

“For the first time in 16 or 17 years, my mom is coming up [from Kissimmee, Florida.] It’s usually just my dad, and we go hunting together. This is a big deal,” Chuck reveals. “We’ll all be together—my parents, his parents, my brother and all the kids,” Kasi adds. In the spirit of the holiday, Kasi lists many of the things she’s thankful for. “I’m grateful for my life in general. I have three beautiful girls. I’m married to my best friend. Our family is amazing that we get to be together very often and enjoy each other’s company. Life is good.” And Chuck? “I’m thankful for everyone being healthy. Thankful I finally met my wife and get to share my life with someone I love so much.” CONTINUED >

FOREVER GRATEFUL
(CON TI N U ED)
The 40-year-old has not only fallen in love with Kasi but also with her three girls, Makenzie, Maddie and Avery. So what’s instant fatherhood like? “It’s pretty easy because they have a great mother. I just try to be there to support them and guide them in the best way I can,” Chuck shares. “I never thought I’d fall in love with someone who’d been married before and has three children. It wasn’t in my playbook. But it was in that moment that I knew it wasn’t my plan. It was way bigger than me. And ever since I met her, nothing but goodness has come into my life.” While the newlyweds currently reside in Thompson Station, they always find a reason to spend time in Franklin. “Our second date was at Gray’s on Main,” Kasi says. “And Avery plays softball, so we’re at the ball fields a lot. We do like to be outdoors, so we’ll go to the park.” “I was in Franklin not too long ago to pay a speeding ticket,” Chuck adds with a laugh. Asked what’s next for the couple, Chuck reveals some big things are coming up around the corner. He recently became part of the ownership team of Rural Cloth, an apparel company that appeals to American’s hardest working men and women. “I grew up in a farming family, so it was a natural fit. Maybe there will be a Chuck Wicks Signature Line next year.” And good news for music fans. He’s in the studio working on new music and hopes to have a new record out at the beginning of the year. “It’s gonna be a more traditional record. This record, in particular, is going back to the sound that put me on the map. Back to Stealing Cinderella. It’s really gonna show a better version of me.” A version that no doubt had a little something to do with Kasi.

cake. Baker Krista Kingston Rattan offers her expert advice for helping to make your next cake perfect. Krista has been baking for 13 years, mostly for fun and not for business. Her love of baking grew out of an extension of her need and love to be creative, and that transitioned into trying her hand at making her kids’ birthday cakes. Even as a little girl, she always had a creative mind and a passion to make things prettier and better. She dreamed of being a fashion designer and actually has a degree in fashion. But life and family put her on a different path—one she never would have expected: baking. The very first cake she baked turned out better than she expected, and Krista was eager to continue to learn more. Being self-taught, she knew she had to learn more after a few decorating disasters and a few dry cakes. She practiced, bought books, watched videos and took a couple of basic classes just to soak up any techniques that would advance her skills. Here, she shares some of what she’s learned. 1. Measure flour by weight with a food scale rather that a traditional measuring cup. Doing this will allow for accuracy and drastically change the bite, texture and flavor of the cake. Inaccurate measurements and remixing are two of the biggest reasons why baked goods come out with less than expected results. Home food scales are relatively inexpensive. 42

Inaccurate measurements and remixing are two of the biggest reasons why baked goods come out with less than expected results. Home food scales are relatively inexpensive.”
2. Always chill your cake before cutting layers (torting) and icing. Once chilled, do a crumb coat (first layer of icing to trap the crumbs). Then, chill the cake for another 20 minutes and proceed with the final layers of icing. 3. Color the fondant, buttercream or royal icing in advance as to allow the coloring to absorb into the icing fully to achieve the true desired color. Gel food coloring is best because it contains significantly less liquid when incorporated into your icing and has excellent pigment and comes in many colors. 4. When using fresh flowers or greenery on a cake, always check to see if they are edible, non-toxic or toxic. Be sure to seal the ends of the foliage if they are to be put directly in the cake. A couple of sealing options are flower spikes or Safety Seal. KRISTA KINGSTON RATTAN 615.947.3443 kristarattan@comcast.net

We all have that one relative that has exquisite taste in jewelry and makes us lust after their specific pieces, wishing we will eventually have the luck of being bequeathed something not only sentimental but also gorgeous. Unfortunately, usually, Great Aunt Gertrude gives you a piece that isn’t on that list. But lucky for you, the perfect piece of jewelry is only a stone’s throw away. You can choose a stone based on your loved one’s individual interests. For example, amber has an ancient, enduring quality any history lover will appreciate. A meditative type will enjoy cool stones, such as aquamarine. Amethyst is traditionally used in crown jewels, making it an appropriate gift for the “princess” of the family. FOR YOUR MOTHER Celtic and Greek mythology associates moonstone with the triple goddess (maiden, mother and crone). Moonstone was thought to protect women’s health as well as promote nurturing.
FOR A YOUNG DAUGHTER OR NIECE Historically, coral has been associated with children. In many European nations, red coral beads are a traditional baby gift. But harvesting coral destroys coral reef, so buy imitation coral jewelry. If you must have real coral, look for vintage pieces, which have the added advantage of being truly one-of-a-kind.
FOR A SISTER Peridot brings the wearer good luck, prosperity and peace. Topaz can be used as an amulet against harm.

“RUNNING! IF THERE’S ANY ACTIVITY HAPPIER, MORE EXHILARATING, MORE NOURISHING TO THE IMAGINATION, I CAN’T THINK OF WHAT IT MIGHT BE. IN RUNNING, THE MIND FLEES WITH THE BODY, THE MYSTERIOUS EFFLORESCENCE OF LANGUAGE SEEMS TO PULSE IN THE BRAIN, IN RHYTHM WITH OUR FEET AND THE SWINGING OF OUR ARMS.” –Joyce Carol Oates Test this out, on any given day, in any season, and count how many people you see jogging or running in your neighborhood. Running is, perhaps, the most popular physical activity worldwide with almost 60 million participating in the U.S. alone, according to Statista.com. People run for different reasons, top of which are keeping healthy, staying in shape, relieving stress and for fun. With the cold winter months approaching, are there particular things people need to consider when running in colder weather? We asked Dr. Cary Gannon, a board-certified podiatric surgeon, to give us her expert advice. TELL US ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN PRACTICING? I have been practicing for 13 years and have spent my entire post-graduate career in Franklin. I ran track and cross country at Auburn University, where I developed an interest in the lower extremity. WHAT ARE MAIN THINGS YOU TREAT PEOPLE FOR? We see a great deal of plantar fasciitis and heel pain, ingrown toenails, bunions, hammertoes and stress fractures. We do a lot of diabetic foot care, wound care and elder care for things like severe fungal toenails. WHAT ARE YOUR TOP TIPS TO KEEP FEET HEALTHY IN GENERAL AND FOR RUNNING IN WINTER? Shoes that fit properly are critical. Too often, I see people wearing shoes that are far too small. The foot requires ample room to expand during a run. Proper attire is also a must. We recommend dry natural fiber socks, headgear and layered clothing. Compression gear, such as compression socks, sleeves or pants are also important for recirculating blood and for aiding recovery. DO YOU SEE ANY DIFFERENCES WITH CONDITIONS OF RUNNERS COMING TO SEE YOU IN WINTER AS OPPOSED TO SUMMER? I always see more injuries in summer as opposed to winter. People who run during the winter are typically seasoned runners who have been training for quite some time. Novice runners generally commit when the weather is nice. Oftentimes, Dr. Cary Gannon Owner, University Foot and Ankle UniversityFootandAnkle.com

RENOVATE & REFINE
COZY up your HOME TAKE A CUE FROM THE SCANDINAVIAN CONCEPT OF HYGGE AND WELCOME THE TRANSITION OF SUMMER TO AUTUMN WITH A RELAXING REFRESH
58
Franklin Lifestyle | November 2019
PUMPKIN SPICE, APPLE CINNAMON AND A HOT CUP OF COCOA. Fall is all about getting warm and comfy as a chill hits the air—preparing yourself for winter, and cherishing those final moments of summer. As the nights grow longer, we’re embracing the Scandinavian secret of hygge by creating a space that emphasizes simple pleasures and finding joy in everyday moments—even when the weather is dreary. A burnt orange adirondack rug and woodland pillow set a ‘cozy cabin’ mood. Wicker baskets filled with apples and gourds are a reminder of the importance of the harvest, and a fun way to help teach young kids about the changing of the seasons. During this transitional time, light wood, fluffy blankets and scented candles beckon crisp autumn evenings, while a vase of fresh flowers—particularly mums—are an ode to the bright, sunny days we’re not quite ready to give up yet.

MCDONALD AND EMILY WOODS ARE THE MAMAS BEHIND @FRANKLINTNFAMILYFUN. Not only are they in the know about what goes on in this town but they also share their love for our community and everyday life (plus cute pics of their kiddos)! We asked them to share some funny Thanksgiving misadventures too. Emily Woods and Cari-Beth McDonald
"Every year at Thanksgiving, we have a big hayride with my family. One year, as we were making our way through the woods, my husband silently rolled off the hayride. Suddenly, as we pulled ahead, a figure came running out of the woods and gave us the scare of a lifetime! Guess who? He was so proud, and now we can never pass that point on the path without laughing about the memories!" –Cari-Beth
"Last year, we ordered Thanksgiving dinner from Kroger only to find out when we got home that what we actually ordered were the ingredients to cook our dinner—whoops! We thought the dinner would be cooked and ready to eat! A few hours later, though, it all turned out great!" –Emily For more Cari-Beth and Emily fun, follow them on Instagram @FranklinTNFamilyFun.
