completely agree!! February is our month of art—making, collecting, admiring and learning. We love art because it gives us a glimpse of someone’s heart, the part of them we don’t see on the surface. We are all drawn to art in different ways. We like to look at and listen to art that makes us feel something, art that resonates with us. Through art, we learn about ourselves. As you read about the local artists in our community and their stories of passion and self-expression, we hope that you too are inspired to pursue what you love. After all, February is the month of love. So, Chattanooga, while you fill your home with chocolate truffles and roses this month, remember to fill your heart too. Find what makes you feel alive—and don’t forget to share it with us. Today is always a great day to love yourself.

Located in the heart of downtown Asheville on Eagle Street in The Block neighborhood, The Foundry Hotel (Curio Collection by Hilton) pays homage to the foundry’s historic past and the vibrant surrounding neighborhood. For much of the twentieth century, Eagle Street was the place to be on The Block. Local businesses – ranging from record shops and grocery stores to dry cleaners and beauty parlors – lined the street; each one helped weave the collective fabric of the predominantly African American neighborhood. The original elevator pulley system, steel star fastenings and exposed brick, plus immersive localized programming such as private Hood Tours help guests understand more about the building and its past. A pan-fried Sunburst Trout was served on a bed of roasted fingerling potatoes, caramelized fennel, leeks and nettle pistou. The grilled pork chop was mighty, with sorghum-lemon candied yams and collards. Each dish whispered a tribute to the neighborhood’s past and Benne on Eagle will remain one of my favorite dining experiences of the year. The hotel has a spa partner, Spa Theology, and the house Tesla will deliver you to your appointment (the concierge can help make that happen). I recommend their signature massage with a highly concentrated blend of lavender, rosemary, and menthol essential oils to reduce inflammation and promote circulation. Local brand, Privai Skincare products are used exclusively in this quiet oasis. Uber or drive 15 minutes to the Biltmore for an afternoon of wandering. Be sure to walk the formal and informal gardens designed by America’s foremost landscape architect, Frederick Law Olmsted. While Asheville will always appeal to outdoor enthusiasts who appreciate a local craft beer, thanks to The Foundry Hotel, the destination now offers a stay that will satiate even the most discerning and curious traveler. ART THERAPY IN BRASSTOWN NC: EVERYTHING AT YOUR FINGERTIPS TO BE ABLE TO RELAX AND UNPLUG.
JOHN C. CAMPBELL TUCKED AWAY IN A PICTURESQUE SETTING TWO HOURS FROM CHATTANOOGA, LIES A UNIQUE GET-AWAY THAT OFFERS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR PEOPLE FROM ALL WALKS OF LIFE TO COME TOGETHER TO CREATE, LEARN AND GROW. Located in Brasstown, North Carolina, the John C. Campbell Folk School (“John C. Campbell”) is a non-profit adult educational organization founded in 1925 to nurture and preserve the folk arts of the Appalachian Mountains. In this environment, it’s easy to understand why many consider John C. Campbell to be the perfect “therapy”. It allows you to unplug, unwind and in many ways “de-clutter” your life. Being required to focus on a single task, such as turning a piece of wood on a lathe or welding a piece of steel, requires that you devote your attention to a specific project. When you do so, it helps you relax as other thoughts, worries and frustrations vanish from your mind. John C. Campbell Folk School has created an environment where groups of people can feel confident in making something with their hands no matter one’s skill level. There is no competition, and the stress-free atmosphere makes it the perfect place to study and disconnect. And because it is based on the concept of “non-competitive learning”, the emphasis is on sharing knowledge, developing skills and challenging one’s self rather than comparing John C. to promote the feeling of togetherness, it is readily evident. Even down to the family-style meals where students share the challenges and accomplishments of the day with each other, you can see that simple but powerful thread woven into everything they do. In addition to proximity, there is another direct tie to Chattanooga. As a part of the faculty and a former President of the John C. Campbell Board of Directors, Chattanooga native and Lookout Mountain resident Julie Clark and her husband and fellow instructor, Benic, have been teaching and/or attending the school for over 20 years.

JULIE CLARK
Julie Clark creation
Julie has been connected to Chattanooga basically her entire life. She grew up on Lookout Mountain and attended Girls Preparatory School. She then attended the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management. So, you ask, how did she go from receiving a degree in Business Management to a career in blacksmithing and metalworking? Here’s the story …. Julie’s family raised horses and she was drawn to the skills of the farriers who came to their home to shoe the horses. She decided this profession was intriguing and after her graduation from UTC, decided to enroll in a three-month farrier program in Virginia. During that time, she learned to forge horseshoes in a coal forge and from that point she was hooked. Julie chose to make this new-found passion her vocation as well, spending the next ten years shoeing horses in the Chattanooga area. Also during that time, she decided to further hone her skills and expand her knowledge of her craft by obtaining a two-year degree in Welding and Joining Techniques from Walker Technical College. While there, she became so passionate that she searched through scrap piles after finishing her welding assignments, to find materials to make small sculptures on her own. When we asked her why she was still involved with John C. Campbell after all this time, she responded “We just kept going back. When you are there taking a class, the entire world disappears except what you are working on. It really frees up the mind to concentrate on one thing. It’s a hard feeling to explain, but it is really nice.” Another reason she finds herself remaining involved with the John C. Campbell Folk School is the impact it can have on other people and the change it can make in their lives and their perception of themselves. Julie 16

said, “I have witnessed people arriving lacking confidence, but through what they learn and make during the week, they leave feeling totally amazed at what they can do.” She went on to explain that she has even had students cry tears of joy because of the realization that they were able to create a sculpture of their own. For Julie, and the other instructors/mentors at the John C. Campbell Folk School, it’s “all about the love”: the love of pursuing their passion for their craft; the love of the traditions and skills of the past and the desire to pass them on; and, the love of sharing their knowledge to help effect changes in the lives of others. If you are interested in taking one of Julie’s classes, or signing up for one of the over 800 week-long or weekend classes offered each year by John C. EMILY KAYE DESIGNS ARTISTIC ARRANGEMENTS DRIVEN BY A LOVE FOR BEAUTY AND A PASSION FOR CREATIVITY
EMILY KAYE DESIGNS BEGAN OUT OF A LOVE FOR CREATIVITY AND A DEDICATION TO BEAUTY. Emily delights in the detailed and intentional processes she provides each of her clients. As a result of accepting a limited number of events each year, she can devote herself to the design process and give each client the personal attention needed to provide an enjoyable service and a beautiful event. From an early age, Emily pursued art and beauty. The idea to channel her love into a floral design studio first came while working as an Event Coordinator in Anchorage, Alaska. Every summer, the land exploded with incredible colors and textures of wildflowers. Instead of seeing standard roses and greenhouse blooms in the floral pieces around town and in the hotel, she wanted arrangements that were inspired by the natural beauty surrounding them. For two years, the idea to bring an artistic flair to the floral industry simmered within. In 2015, Emily and her husband moved to Singapore where she accepted a marketing opportunity at a fine art gallery while working for a florist on the weekends. After only a few months, she realized her experiences had given her the tools and confidence needed to start her own creative floral design studio focused on producing artistic pieces celebrating the natural beauty of flowers. Emily Kaye Designs is an event studio rather than a retail florist. She offers floral design services for weddings and other private events not only in Chattanooga

ANTIQUES ARE MAKING A COMEBACK. Whether you’re an antique aficionada, a thrifty thrifter or new to the whole concept of vintage revival; whether it’s a hand-me-down, a thrift-store-find or just something cool you stumbled upon at an estate sale; endless opportunities exist to effortlessly incorporate retro, vintage, antique or whatever-you-want-to-call-them items into different parts of your modern home.

WHAT IT IS Antique Chest STYLE IT Coffee Table PRO TIP Revive solid-wood pieces with little actual value by refinishing the wood to your liking.
Don’t be afraid to do something different, and don’t take things too seriously. If the piece you’re working with doesn’t have any real value, you have so many options to liven it up, including paint, finish and hardware.
Make your piece multi-purpose by turning the lid into a game table or by storing your cocktail accessories inside for an easy-access mini bar!
Spread the vintage love. Use antiques strategically and as accent pieces to keep your overall aesthetic from coming off as too dated.

Dealing with life’s challenges in a way that restores hope for the future.
How can you be supportive of those around you? People struggling with the effects of a stroke, depression, anxiety, aphasia, compulsive behaviors or any of life’s challenges can feel alone and isolated, especially if experiencing memory or language difficulties. Being given consistent support and understanding is important for recovery. Everyone struggles with pain and challenges and some issues are more destructive than others. We are all in need of love and understanding.
