An Apple a Day WHEN I WAS SELECTING PHOTOS FOR THIS ISSUE’S COVER, THE RUNNER-UP WAS A PHOTO OF APPLES STACKED NEATLY ON A LARGE PRODUCE STAND— SHINY RED DELICIOUS BEAUTIES BLENDING INTO THE NEIGHBORING GRANNY SMITHS ... begging you to select one and take a bite. What instantly came to mind? “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” Obviously I didn’t ultimately select that one for the cover ... but the thought stayed with me. Wound’t it be wonderful if that’s all it took? Just a daily apple to stay healthy. Unfortunately, it takes a bit more than that to get (and remain)

in top shape. And in this issue, we’ve got the best tips on how to do that. What you put in your body is paramount for good health—so we featured not one but two articles on food (and let’s face it, we love food) in this issue. For good eating habits at home, Fresh Thyme Farmers Market has the expertise to help you change your diet and eat fresh. If you’re looking for a healthy place to eat out (or grab-and-go!), Balance Café & Smoothies is known for using local, fresh, often organic ingredients in every single dish and drink. GOOD TIMES

Gallery Veronique Open House Festive cheer abounded for all at Gallery Veronique on November 21st. This holiday-centric event was a hit, featuring meet-and-greets with local artists, live music, wine, appetizers and, of course, plenty of shopping. Guests were also able to purchase a variety of one-ofa-kind gifts for everyone on their Christmas list, especially those who love all things fine art. GalleryVeronique.com

Just after January 1st, Bill and Donna’s advisor at Family Wealth Advisory Group emailed and asked them to think of three financial resolutions they wanted to focus on in 2020. Likewise, Mark and Jennifer received the same message from their advisor at FWAG. Being at different stages in their lives, their resolutions were naturally different—as was the plan they should follow. Bill and Donna resolved to: • Organize a file with instructions on how to access all of their assets and liabilities • Learn about securing their financial information on their own personal devices • Commit more money to their grandkids’ long-term education goals Mark and Jennifer resolved to: • Learn more about their employee benefits programs and all they have to offer • Review last year’s spending habits and create or refine a monthly budget • Also commit more money to their children’s long-term education goals When their advisor noticed the two couples had a similar goal, he felt it was a great time to set up a family meeting. Knowing now that a coordinated effort was in place to build an education plan energized both couples to tackle their other financial resolutions for the New Year. From all of us at Family Wealth Advisory Group, we wish you a Happy New Year, too.

THAT’S A RELIEF

(CON TI N U ED)

TRE ATMENT S Techniques can vary depending on many different factors, but here are a few of the most popular at Wards Corner Chiropractic & Sports Rehab.

MANIPULATION Chiropractic manipulation is what many likely think of when imagining a chiropractor’s office—pressure is applied to the spine or other part of the body to address alignment issues.

DRY NEEDLING This technique involves the application of a very fine monofilament needle to muscular tissue, with occasional use of electrical stimulation. Not to be confused with acupuncture, dry needling is performed by specialists with different training and is rooted in Western medicine. It’s commonly used to address pain issues in the shoulder, neck, heel, hip and back.

CUPPING For use in addressing musculoskeletal issues, this relief therapy became known to many at 2016’s Olympic games, when swim team members appeared with small circular welts on their backs—a result of recent cupping therapy. It’s been used by some cultures for more than 3,000 years, although its popularity didn’t take off until celebrity use brought it mainstream. In practice, small cups cover a small area of tissue and utilize a vacuum to remove toxins and inflammation.

COLD LASER THERAPY Low light levels are used in cold laser therapy; as the name implies, the light never becomes intensive enough to heat the skin. Cold laser therapy stimulates tissue and promotes healing for a number of conditions, including helping eliminate pain for acute or chronic conditions such as arthritis, back pain, fibromyalgia and more.

YOU MIGHT THINK THAT LIVING IN THE SUBURBS

JOBS ARE EASIER TO COME BY, THERE’S ENOUGH FOOD AND LIVING NECESSITIES FOR EVERYONE, AND THAT THE POVERTY GROWTH RATE IS MINIMAL. Unfortunately, that couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, the poverty growth rate in the suburbs is eight times greater than urban areas in Greater Cincinnati, according to Care Center director Greg Knake. But instead of simply fretting over the statistics, Greg and his army of more than 250 volunteers work to combat that problem in the Loveland area and beyond with the Care Center. Operating out of and rooted in the Northstar Church on Lebanon Road, the organization’s mission is: “helping people remove barriers and build the resources they need to thrive in life.” “We really are a resource center that’s about life advancement—about helping people get to the next place in life,” Greg says. “We looked at best practices around the city and around the country, and to do it really well we have to partner with other organizations,” Greg says. “With our workshops, we are using every square inch so we can’t invite partners in. We’re connecting with different partners now—and in the future will expand that to be able to provide even more resources to devote to the whole person.” The Center also wants to increase the number of hours they are open and expand programs to

The Care Center is open on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of every month from 7–8:15 p.m. Guests can receive relief in the form of personal hygiene products, cleaning supplies and paper goods, as well as attend personal growth workshops and enjoy a dinner catered by Tano Bistro.

include one-on-one coaching and mentoring— helping with job placement and building basic life skills that people need to break the cycle. “The expansion is really about being able to go much deeper with our existing guests and start to go wider with people that maybe can’t come because we’re not open during the right hours,” Greg explains. The Care Center is always in need of volunteers and donations to keep their programs running and to serve more people in the Loveland area and beyond.
