Will I be in the wrong if I run over a pedestrian when they carelessly cross in front of my vehicle with their nose buried in their iPhone? A batch of teenagers fumbled onto Lindero Canyon Blvd at the Thousand Oaks Blvd intersection as I was making a left-hand turn onto Lindero Canyon Blvd. The light was green for my turn. They were either talking to each other, reading emails, texting or maybe playing Candy Crush. Fortunately, I was just starting up and not driving directly into the turn at a higher speed. I tooted my horn, cursed impotently, lowered my window and called them idiots (a dumb and fruitless gesture). Their response was “Duh” and a giggle. A gaggle of Bart Simpsons maybe? Had I wiped them out it would have been an interesting insurance claim as I was likely to have been left hanging out to dry and tarred and feathered. My point is that the disconnect from our surroundings and reality is accelerating. Everywhere I look, almost everyone I see who is under 35 is clutching their mobile phone or has their face buried in it as they walk along. Robin’s grandchildren need to have their iPads taken from them so we can have a conversation. Frankly, I yearn for the good old days of dirty pay phones. When I was out on business, I carried a can of Lysol with me to disinfect filthy pay phones so I could call my office, a client or call home. I don’t care!! Bring them back!

A sofa is the heart of a room, so we put our heart into everything we do. We bridge the gap between a design firm and a furniture store. Like a design firm, we value the creative process. United Way of Ventura County: PARTNERING WITH COMMUNITY TO IMPROVE LIVES

A LOCAL NONPROFIT IS SETTING THE BAR BY FOCUSING ON EDUCATION, FINANCIAL STABILITY AND HEALTH FOR THE WELL-BEING OF VENTURA COUNTY RESIDENTS. Since the United Way of Ventura County’s inception in 1945, the nonprofit has helped raise over $100 million. When the Thomas and Woolsey Fires occurred, the organization helped raise more than $5 million from more than 9,000 donors nationwide. The organization also worked with their national office to assist with partnerships, including Airbnb, who provided disaster housing coordination with its users, and Lyft, who provided ride share services. “To date, we have given financial assistance to over 1,800 households affected by the fires,” says Eric Harrison, president and CEO of UWVC since December 2014. Harrison says the main point he would like the public to know about UWVC is that they are more just than a fundraising organization, but rather they focus on building meaningful community solutions.

“The kind of real and lasting change that benefits everyone is only possible when people from all walks of life are willing to roll up their sleeves and go where they are most needed,” says Harrison. To date, UWVC has more than 1,000 program volunteers and an additional 3,000 registered through the Volunteer Ventura County website, which contains year-round community engagement opportunities. COMMUNITY PROGRAMS & PARTNERS Some of the other UWVC programs with local partnerships include Born Learning, a public engagement campaign to help parents, caregivers and communities create learning opportunities for young children; Building Healthy Smiles, which provides dental health for children in underserved populations in the county; Earn It, Keep It, Save It, which provides access to the Earned Income Tax Credit and electronic filing of income taxes free of charge through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program; Emergency Food and Shelter Program, a national program that provides funding to local social service organizations for food, shelter and rental assistance; and Women United, a network of individuals who help resolve single mothers’ issues through their financial and leadership power. “Our programs are run by United Way Community Impact staff and volunteers who are mobilized based on interest and skill set,” says Harrison. UWVC also founded 2-1-1 Ventura County, a program of Interface Children and Family Services that connects more than 30,000 Ventura County callers and texters each year with information about health and human services available to them.

“It is the comprehensive information and referral service for Ventura County,” says Harrison. Jill Haney has been a volunteer with UWVC for 16 years and has served on the board for nine years as a co-chair and an officer. She enjoys being active in the different programs and enjoys how the organization engages the community. “I like that (UWVC) has a countywide focus and the different programs that focus on income, education and health,” says Haney. “There are so many pieces that do so many different things. Whatever tugs at your heart, there’s a place for you.” SPECIAL EVENTS UWVC also hosts three special events each year, including the Spirit Awards Gala, where the organization presents awards in recognition of individuals, corporations and organizations that provide their time, funds and talent to the community; the Women United Annual Luncheon, where educational awards are handed out to single mothers who have completed coursework at a community college and have been accepted by a four-year university, and the countywide Day of Caring, where nonprofits host hundreds of volunteers to give back to the community. This year’s Day of Caring will be held on Saturday, Sept. 28. “(UWVC) has been coordinating Day of Caring for the past 30 years,” says Harrison. Future goals Harrison has in store for UWVC is having the organization explore and discover its role when it comes to housing and homeless issues. “Since the Thomas Fire, homelessness has increased by 28% in Ventura County,” says Harrison. “From many generative internal conversations and external discussions, we determined we needed to explore this further.” In the year 2020, the nonprofit will celebrate its 75th anniversary and Harrison says there is much more to be done. “We are proud of the accomplishments of the past and we cannot do it alone,” says Harrison. “The caring power of the community is essential to all our success.”

on a holiday show every December at the naval base in Port Hueneme, in which volunteers present a full production, featuring stars from past shows, youth performance groups, Santa Claus and other holiday characters. “It’s one of the most important and rewarding things we do,” Cassidy emphasizes. “We’re there with families—mothers and fathers with children by themselves—waiting for their spouses to come home. All of our performers donate their time and talent and it’s a truly beautiful production.” In other philanthropic endeavors, 5-Star Theatricals features the Starlight Teens and Singers, comprised of more than 60 children between the ages of 8 and 14, who perform for free at senior citizen facilities in the Conejo Valley and beyond, as well as for Rotary Clubs in town. There are no fees to participate in Starlight Teens and Singers, and the performers are encouraged to further their education and experience with other groups, shows and entertainment, and to bring that experience back to Starlight Teens and Singers. Education is a key component, as they are taught a variety of material and songs, learning various styles and discovering great music of earlier eras. But even more importantly, 5-Star is teaching the youth to serve their community, Murray notes. Additionally, 5-Star Theatricals does outreach through its Adopt-A-Bus program, which gives children who have never seen a musical the opportunity to see a production for free. Last year they had 800 children in attendance and plan to continue to grow this program with the help of the community.

The Importance of Childhood Hearing Testing ARTICLE RAYE ANN CLAYTON, AUD

EARLY DETECTION The good news is that early detection and treatment really work! Children that receive appropriate hearing intervention, such as hearing aids, assistive technology, therapy and/or school accommodations, can perform on par with normal-hearing peers. For school-age children in California, public schools provide hearing screenings in Kindergarten or 1st, 2nd, 5th, 8th and 10th grades, as well as when a child first enters the California public school system or a teacher or staff member is concerned and refers the child for testing. If your child fails a hearing screening at school or in the pediatrician’s office, it’s important to schedule an auditory evaluation with an audiologist. Only an audiologist can determine the type and severity of a hearing loss. EAR INFECTIONS Another situation common to parents of toddlers is ear infections. While most isolated incidents of ear infections clear up relatively quickly on their own or with simple antibiotic treatment from a physician, frequent or chronic ear infections warrant hearing testing to determine if the infection is causing hearing loss. This type of frequent/intermittent or chronic hearing loss can cause speech and language delays. If your child is under the care of an otolaryngologist, or ENT physician, and ear tubes are recommended, a referral should be made to an audiologist for pre- and post-operative testing.

MOST PARENTS ARE FAMILIAR WITH THE NEED TO

OF TESTING THEIR CHILDREN AS THEY GROW. Many families think of hearing loss in black and white terms, believing one has either normal hearing or deafness. Actually, hearing loss is much more nuanced. About 1 in 1,000 babies are born with profound deafness, and another 5 in 1,000 are born with significant hearing loss. Other types of childhood hearing loss are not present at birth but can manifest later due to ear infections, trauma, syndromes, genetic causes or damaging noise levels. According to The American Speech–Language–Hearing Association, children with hearing loss will find it much more difficult than children who have normal hearing to learn vocabulary, grammar, word order, idiomatic expressions and other aspects of verbal communication. According to the Joint Committee on Infant Hearing, all infants and young children should be monitored for developmental auditory behaviors and speech and language development. Those who demonstrate delayed development, regardless of newborn screening outcome, should receive an auditory evaluation to rule out hearing loss. Research shows that untreated hearing loss can have devastating conse-

WESTLAKE BODY CONTOURING: LIGHT THERAPY FOR FAT LOSS & SO MUCH MORE

WHEN THEN-RETIRED CHIROPRACTOR DIANNE LALENA SANDBERG, D.C., first discovered the amazing power of LED light therapy to essentially “melt” fat and dissolve inches, she resolved to share this technology with the public. Establishing Westlake Body Contouring in 2015, Dr. Dianne initially focused on the light therapy’s fat loss benefits and quickly realized the Contour Light’s benefits went beyond melting fat. In addition to the incredible fat loss results, Dr. Dianne’s patients experience relief from various health conditions, including chronic pain, arthritis and joint issues. “It’s extremely exciting and gratifying to see the light easing the pain and improving the quality of life for so many people,” says Dr. Dianne. “Using the only device on the market that can actually treat large surface areas on the body, we have a patented reflective coating on the pads that increases the light energy to 10x and redirects it back into the tissue. No other device on the market has this capability or power.” Since opening Westlake Body Contouring, Dr. Dianne has provided the opportunity for hundreds of people to experience the life-changing body-sculpting technology, including local celebrities and professional athletes.

The Sleep Shoppe: HELPING PEOPLE WAKE UP HAPPY FOR DECADES

I’M FRED KUNKE—THE VERY PROUD FOUNDER AND OWNER OF ALL FOUR LOCATIONS OF THE SLEEP SHOPPE. Over 30 years ago, I was a young man who developed a passion for the mattress industry and how the power of sleep could improve the quality of someone’s life. Driven by this dream, I went out one day and purchased a pickup truck. I drove that truck home with a huge grin on my face and told my family that we were going to be opening our very own mattress store. What I didn’t know back then was how much this business would allow me to get to know and connect with my community, and that has been one of the greatest gifts. Early on, I was struck by the fact that what all of my customers seemed to have in common was a nervousness about the mattress-buying process. From that point forward, I made it my personal mission and my lifelong pursuit to figure out how to eliminate the uncertainty
