A

s we (reluctantly) kiss summer days of sleeping in and freedom goodbye and gear up for the new season, let’s preserve the happiness gleaned from a few months of relaxation from the daily grind. While my type-A friends may disagree, keeping perspective and balance this school year is the goal I’m setting for my family, as the overwhelm of competing demands—schoolwork, homework, extracurricular and social—can quickly consume our time, energy and joy. As our featured stress expert, Jeffrey Gero, notes in “Mastering Teenage Stress,” more than half of 8- to 17-year-olds experience stress and anxiety about school. Prolonged stress can cause depression, lack of motivation and downright unhappy kids—just look at the staggering number of teen suicides! As I often remind my own children, worrying too much about school, or anything else, is unproductive. Instead, keep the big picture in mind and know that whatever challenges we’re facing will pass—even junior year of high school! As a society, we place such an emphasis on achieving and getting ahead that we often forget to enjoy life. In high school, especially, students are pushed to get good grades, take AP and IB classes, load up on extracurriculars and do whatever it takes to excel academically. Why? Because they’re told attending a prestigious college leads to success in the form of a lucrative career. While obtaining a good job is important, let’s be honest with our kids: regardless of what college does or does not accept them, they can still succeed and find a career they love—and once they have a degree, who cares where it came from? Plenty of opportunities exist to explore career options, aside from attending an elite (and expensive) institution. Whether in the workforce, community college or a four-year public or private college, young adults can discover their interests, skills and passions and decide which direction to take them. Be sure to read about Segue Career Mentors (p. 34), an organization that educates and inspires youth about potential career paths by bringing guest speakers from all walks of life into the classroom to share their vocations with students. Thankfully, educators are wising up and offering alternatives to traditional high-stress school curriculums. In Conejo Valley, many educational options exist for students who thrive in academic environments that emphasize cooperation over competition and allow for hybrid independent and in-class learning (“Educational Alternatives,” p. 38). So, as we dive into the pool, er, school year and new season, let's remember to keep calm and do the best we can, while also allowing time to relax and have fun—balance is the key, so we don’t fall victim to stress and anxiety.

The awards recognize outstanding community contributions by those directly involved in the delivery of health care in Ventura County who, through professional, charitable and public service activities, demonstrate the ideals of generosity, excellence and integrity as exemplified by the late David Fainer, MD, and Leo Tauber, MD, who served as role models and mentors to many in the medical community. Exemplary and empathetic professionals, Drs. Fainer and Tauber were known for their motto, “The secret of care of the patient is caring for the patient.” Funds raised at the event will support critically needed health care, including free dental, vision and mental health care to underserved children, survivorship wellness retreats to low-income women undergoing cancer treatment at local hospitals, medical student scholarship programs, a reflective parenting intervention program and patient advocacy and companionship services. he American Cancer Society hosts an Enchanted Evening of Hope, Saturday, August 5, at Eden Gardens in Moorpark to celebrate life, honor cancer survivors and recognize caregivers

and doctors that serve and improve the lives of those battling cancer. With some 1,459,000+ Californians alive today that have a history of cancer and an estimated 3,695 cases of new cancer predicted each year in Ventura County alone, the community ben-

efits from the American Cancer Society’s programs and services. Aimed to ease the burden of cancer in the community by providing free resources and services 24 hours a day (by calling 800.227.2345), the American Cancer Society’s programs are funded by individuals, companies that care and the community at large. As the ACS does not receive government funding, fundraising events like the Enchanted Evening of Hope are especially important for raising funds that help the American Cancer Society continue its mission to save lives through research, advocacy and education and help support individuals with cancer in various ways. The evening features fine foods, premium wines, live entertainment, dancing, a spectacular live and silent auction and recognition of community honorees. Comprised of 22 outstanding Ventura County community volunteers, the event committee thanks the many local businesses, individuals and organizations sponsoring this event and looks forward to the Ventura County community coming together to make a difference in the lives of cancer patients. Event honorees include Distinguished Cancer Patient Kelly Gaines and Caregiver Honorees Darin and Emma Gaines and Distinguished Medical Honorees Dr. Francisco Bracho, pediatric hematologist -oncologist, and Dr. David Chi, surgical oncologist. Sheriff Geoff Dean emcees the event, and Kathy Long serves as the Ventura County Auctioneer. The event takes place Saturday, August 5, at Eden Gardens, 3900 Brennan Road, in Moorpark. productive and self-sufficient, and the next generation of children are raised in happier more supportive households. “The list goes on…and all these benefits begin with the education of our young people,” Beckerman says.

Over the years, Segue’s speakers have visited with students at local schools, including Ventura High, Pacifica High in Oxnard, Pacific High in Ventura, Hueneme High in Port Hueneme and Channel Islands High in Oxnard. The speakers focus on two key areas: career awareness and success skills. Speakers generally come from the STEM field, which stands for science, technology, engineering and math, and CTE (career technical education) including everything from health care workers to construction trades. “Each speaker spends about 90 minutes on campus, 20 minutes in each of three classrooms, and thereby reaches upwards of 100 students,” Beckerman explains. “When 50 speakers speak at a school, the impact at that one school is 5,000 student career exposures!” To date, Segue has produced over 85,000 Student Career Exposures (SCEs) for local students. ACCOLADES

Students who have heard Segue speakers say the mentors motivate them to get good grades, expose them to career options, and help them determine which classes to take for their future vocations. Segue speakers also benefit. Mentors enjoy helping students reach their full potential and assisting youth make decisions that will increase the likelihood of their success. Teachers who host Segue Career Mentors in the classroom say students learn many important factors, including that long-term goals are achievable and what it takes to get ready for real life. “Segue’s contributions to Ventura County’s students over the years have inspired thousands,” Tiffany Morse, director of career education for the Ventura County Office of Education, wrote in a letter to Beckerman in 2015. And in 2010, Stanley Mantooth, Ventura County Superintendent of Schools, wrote, “We, as educators, know that inspired and motivated students achieve more academically, work harder in school, drop out in fewer numbers, attend school more regularly, and are less likely to join gangs or exhibit violent or aberrant behaviors,” Mantooth states. “The entire community can benefit from the more focused and motivated students who will come out of the Segue experience.” While many classrooms and organizations provide some form of in-class speakers, Segue focuses exclusively on classroom

career mentor speakers. “The beauty of Segue is that it’s not disruptive to any existing programs, and this adds to students’ overall knowledge of the real world of work, which in turn can increase their inspiration,” says Beckerman. For more information, visit SegueProgram.org/.

TRUDY TUTTLE ARRIAGA PROFESSOR OF EDUCATION OF THE YEAR

Raised by two educators in the Ventura Unified School District, Trudy Tuttle Arriaga started following in her parents’ footsteps when she became a teacher’s aide in the classroom. During this time, “someone was kind enough to say, ‘you’d be a great teacher’,”’ remembers Arriaga, of Ventura. So, she returned to school to earn her master’s degree in Educational Administration and Supervision from California State University, Northridge. “And again, someone was kind enough to say, ‘have you thought about being an assistant principal?’” says Arriaga, who later earned a doctorate in Educational Policy, Planning and Administration from the University of Southern California. The early encouragement from her colleagues spurred Arriaga to become the district’s first female superintendent for 14 years, a teacher and a principal, dating back to 1975. “I retired from the superintendency after 14 fabulous years because it’s the second chapter in my life and I wanted to try something different,” she says. “Although I retired from the superintendent, it was never my intention to go home.” In 2015, Arriaga joined California Lutheran University’s faculty full-time after serving as an adjunct for nine years. That year, the district office was named the Trudy Tuttle Arriaga Education Service Center; and in 2017, she was named the Professor of Education of the Year by the Association of California School Administrators. In other honors, Arriaga was a 2015 Woman of the Year for the 37th Assembly District and 19th Senate District and the city of Ventura’s Citizen of the Year in 2012. AT CLU, she teaches in master’s and doctoral programs, as well as the university’s new Institute for Executive Leadership in Education certificate program for administrators. In 2015, the release of a book she co-wrote with Randall P. Lindsey, Opening Doors: An Implementation Template for Cultural Proficiency, spurred Arriaga to travel across the coun-

try helping districts improve student engagement and achievement by focusing on diversity, equity, access and inclusion. “The book is about equity and inclusion for all students and their families,” she says. “In my travels, I also do professional development, talking to teachers, administrators and staff about equity for all.” Looking back on her lifelong vocation, she is grateful for those who helped her along the way. “IT’S IMPORTANT TO HAVE MENTORS AND PEOPLE WHO BELIEVE IN US,” ARRIAGA NOTES.

She is currently writing another book that focuses on female leaders, “and my experience as a leader in a role that historically was not a role for women,” she says. Meanwhile, “I’m just thrilled to be at Cal Lutheran because they’ve been so supportive of my work.”

HONORING TEACHERS (CON TI N U ED)

KARROLYNE FOGEL 2017 PRESIDENT’S AWARD FOR TEACHING EXCELLENCE

Karrolyne Fogel’s passion for teaching was inspired by her parents, who were both educators involved with students both inside and outside of the classroom. “I grew up seeing what made a good teacher,” recalls Fogel, of Thousand Oaks. Her first teaching experience was through Girl Scouts, where she taught camp skills, as well as arts and crafts. “But I became interested in math as a career when I did an overnight visit while choosing a college,” she says. “My host was a math major and I was enthralled by her math class.” Today, Fogel is the associate professor of mathematics at California Lutheran University, where she joined the faculty in 1998. Earlier this year, she received the 2017 President’s Award for Teaching Excellence, which recognizes professors who are held in high esteem by their peers, students and the university community. A committee of past honorees selected Fogel to receive the honor and $2,500. At CLU, Fogel teaches upper division electives for math majors as well as classes for non-majors. She also educates aspiring elementary school teachers in the Interdisciplinary Educational Studies Program and serves as the director of the Mathematics Single Subject Program for those planning to become high school math teachers. “We all run into problems with math; it’s just a matter of how far along you are before it takes significant effort to make a concept make sense,” Fogel notes. “THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ME AND THE STUDENTS IS THAT I’VE EXPERIENCED THE THRILL OF FINALLY HAVING THE PIECES SHIFT INTO PLACE ENOUGH TIMES THAT I’M HOOKED,” FOGEL SAYS. “MY GOAL IS TO HELP THEM REACH THAT POINT. BUT ALSO TO HELP THEM REALIZE THAT THEY ARE WORTHY PEOPLE INDEPENDENT OF HOW THEY DO IN MATH.”

Through her vocation, Fogel especially enjoys working with individual students and seeing them grow and develop, both mathematically and as people. “It’s just such a privilege to be part of that transition,” she says. Fogel’s next endeavor will involve returning to one of her favorite classes, Number Theory, for the first time in 12 years. “I’m excited to be back,” she says. As part of the class, students read about the quest to prove Fermat’s last theorem, which was proved in 1994 after 450 years. “I was working in that area of math when it was finally proved,” Fogel says, “so I have personal stories about the topic and the proof that help the topic come alive in a way that’s hard to get just from a textbook.” 46

LEAH OVIEDO

2017 VENTURA COUNTY TEACHER OF THE YEAR

As the granddaughter of a preschool teacher, Leah Oviedo grew up hearing stories about her grandmother’s wonderful experiences in the classroom.

“MY GRANDMOTHER INSPIRED ME TO BE A TEACHER—SHE SPARKED MY LOVE,” REMEMBERS OVIEDO. Oviedo’s love for the vocation was further solidified when she started working as a child care assistant for Conejo Valley Unified School District, where she realized she would make teaching a lifelong profession. Today, she is a teacher at Walnut Elementary School in Newbury Park, where she was named the 2017 Ventura County Teacher of the Year by the Ventura County Office of Education. “I am just doing my job as a teacher,” she says about the honor, “so it has taken me back to receive an award for doing my job.” Oviedo’s educational philosophy is integrated into the word “inspire,” which she says is her reminder to inspire students to reach their fullest potential. Integrating current ideas into her classroom is also important, so she drives her instruction to meet the needs of individual students by creating engaging lessons. “Knowing the needs of all my students is very important,” Oviedo says. “It is my job to teach to the whole child so everyone can be successful. I believe each student learns differently and it is my job to get to know the students, so they can be successful learners.” She also creates a classroom where all students feel safe. “I create an environment where I am nurturing to all my students, and where all students can feel safe and included to contribute to our classroom environment without negative criticism.” Above all, Oviedo’s goal is to be the best teacher she can be, “because the students deserve that,” she says. “They are our future doctors, teachers, police officers, maybe even the President!”

very year, the American Psychological Association takes our emotional temperature and reports the results in a research study titled, “Stress in America.” This year, for the first time,

children were included in the survey and asked about their stress levels. The conclusion: Not only are our kids feeling more stressed, but unfortunately, parents aren’t aware of the stress their children are experiencing. “What we’re seeing with stress is in line with existing research about parents’ perception of their kids’ engagement in risky behaviors,” says Psychologist Katherine C. Nordal, the APA’s executive director for professional practice.

“PARENTS OFTEN UNDER-REPORT DRUG USE, DEPRESSION AND SEXUAL ACTIVITY IN THEIR CHILDREN. NOW IT APPEARS THE SAME MAY BE TRUE FOR STRESS,” NORDAL WARNS. CONTINUED >

the three major aspects of teenage stress:

So, what is a parent to do? First, consider Looking first at the causes of stress, it boils down to teenagers feeling like they are not able to cope with the demands being placed upon them. Girls and young women are less likely to feel safe in their neighborhoods or schools and often fear being attacked. Additional causes of teenage stress include social media, technology, lack of self-esteem, communication issues, divorce and competitive environments. The most common symptoms of teenage stress include irritability, headaches, nausea, fatigue, increased heart rate and a pessimistic outlook.

causes, warning signs and coping skills.

1. Causes of teen stress include the following: • Moving to a new home and/or school • Dating • Tests and homework • Too-high expectations • Sports and other extracurricular activities • Employment • Social awkwardness • Too much to do • Too fast or slow physical development • Family problems, including abuse and alcohol • Owning a car • Relationships with friends • Having a boyfriend or a girlfriend • Not achieving something really wanted • Money problems. 2. Warning signs of stress include the following: • CONSTANT FATIGUE: Prolonged stress can wear a teen out and make them feel tired all the time. • PERSISTENT DISCOMFORT: Prolonged stress can actually cause pain, since both mind and body register stress. • BURNOUT: Prolonged stress can change what a teen cares about and leave them unmotivated. • BREAKDOWN: Prolonged stress can be debilitating and cause depression. 3. Coping skills are essential to helping your teens manage stress. The American Psychological Association offers tips and suggestions for developing awareness of teenage stressors and helping teens deal with stress in a constructive manner. For example, notice when your kids are most likely to talk—at bedtime, before dinner and in the car—and be fully available to just listen. When your children open up about their concerns, stop whatever you are doing and pay attention. Express interest in what they are saying without being intrusive, and listen to their point of view, even if it’s difficult to hear. Let them finish what they’re saying before responding, and to ensure you understand them correctly, repeat what you heard them say. Realize your children may test you by telling you a little about what is bothering them. Listening carefully and encouraging them to talk may coax them to share the whole story. Shielding children from possible causes of stress or anxiety, such as unemployment, a parent’s marital problems or an illness in the family, often worsen a child’s anxiety, because children commonly assume the worst-case scenario about the unknown. Instead, help children understand the situation by providing age-appropriate information. Interesting enough, over 50% of teens polled in a survey said, “chilling out with their friends” was the surest way to reduce stress. Another positive approach to reducing teen stress is to help build their self-esteem and introduce relaxation and meditation techniques, which have been documented to reduce stress and improve behavior.

Jeffery Gero, PhD, is a pioneer in the field of stress management, a former director of the Health Awareness Institute and the Stress Management Institute of California and creator of the Success of Stress System. Having worked with organizations and individuals to overcome stress for over 30 years, Dr. Gero delivered the first stress management program for the California Department of Corrections at San Quentin Prison, assisted the Los Angeles Times with the stress surrounding the 1984 Olympics and helped JPL (NASA) deal with the stress caused by the Mars Project. A founder of LEAP, which helps teenagers master stress, Dr. Gero coaches athletes and individuals to enhance their performance. He can be reached at 818.879.1373.

In today’s changing times, it is imperative for parents to be compassionate and sensitive to the daily challenges their teenagers face and prepare them to effectively deal with whatever life throws their way. August 2017 | Conejo Valley Lifestyle

Barre’s gorgeous 2,600-square-foot space is located at the corner of Village Glen and Townsgate Road in the Westlake Plaza. The immaculate studio is full of natural light and includes a large workout room with two mirrored walls and ballet barres lining all four walls of the room, where the staff says, “the pure barre magic happens.” Surrounding the Pure Barre room is an on-trend athlesiure store that caters to uniquely stylish and active lifestyles and welcomes walk-in guests. You don’t have to be a member to enjoy the shopping, but many visitors do join the workout after a shopping stop or two. It is hard to resist their invitation of a free week of classes for new and local visitors. The Pure Barre team enjoys sharing their results-oriented workout with new clients and being a part of the transformations that have occurred regularly since the studio opened its doors a year ago. In a typical Pure Barre class, you will find clients of all ages, shapes, sizes and fitness levels. Part of the magic of Pure Barre is that anyone can do it! What is Pure Barre exactly? The class is musically driven but is not a dance class. While the technique is high intensity, it is very low impact, so you get a great workout without putting excessive stress on your joints. The tiny movements fatigue the muscles and short stretches lengthen them, resulting in long, lean muscle and a fast, effective way to change the shape of your body and elevate your overall strength. The workout is not easy, but there is a proven recipe for your success here—the technique, combined with caring and inspiring teachers that offer personalized hands-on corrections, tips and adjustments both during and after class, works. In addition to the Pure Barre Classic classes, the studio recently added a

Pure Foundations class for clients new to Pure Barre and for those wanting to concentrate on perfecting their form. The class offers the same level of challenge as the classic class in a smaller, slightly slower and softer setting. This month, Pure Barre is excited to add a third class—Pure Empower—to the schedule. There is a lot of excitement in the studio surrounding the launch of this Pure Barre-style cardio-based option.

“ALL CLIENTS NEED TO DO IS BRING THE RIGHT ATTITUDE, BE WILLING TO STEP OUTSIDE OF THEIR COMFORT ZONE AND KEEP COMING TO CLASS,” SAYS OWNER SUSAN MARTIN. “IN AS LITTLE AS FIVE TO SEVEN CLASSES, A MIND-MUSCLE CONNECTION FORMS AND RESULTS FOLLOW QUICKLY.” The best part of Pure Barre is that not only does it change bodies, it changes lives. Pure Barre is an inclusive community of women who come together to build their strength and become the best version of themselves. This community of strong women thrives on building one another up, encouraging and supporting each other. The culture of Pure Barre is to cheer you on and lift you up—that optimism is contagious and obvious and will empower you to achieve your goals. Each class is just 55 minutes. “You are worth taking 55 minutes of your day, just for you,” Pure Barre’s Assistant Manager, Melissa Ortiz, reminds you. “There will always be a reason to wait, but it would be far better for you to start today. We are here for you, and in a very short time, it will be your Pure Barre journey that will inspire someone else!” August 2017 | Conejo Valley Lifestyle

gatherings. He would go in the living room and sit in his favorite

chair alone and turn up the TV volume to a level that would interrupt the family conversations. He became forgetful, leaving his personal belongings in odd places and had trouble following conversations. Ray noticed a change in his mother over the course of a few years; she was constantly upset with family and friends for not speaking up and would abruptly leave in the middle of a conversation, finding solace in the familiar silence of her room. If these examples seem familiar to you, you are not alone. The most common chronic health issue affecting older adults is hearing loss, yet less than 75% of adults with hearing loss who would benefit from hearing devices actually use them. A recent study published in the Journal of American Geriatrics shows a strong link between hearing loss and cognitive decline, finding two times the risk of dementia for those with mild hearing loss, three times for those with moderate hearing loss and five times with severe hearing loss. When hearing loss is left untreated, cognitive decline accelerates. This accelerated cognitive decline is believed to be related to the lack of social interaction and participation in cognitively stimulating events due to hearing loss. We live in dynamic and complex listening environments where sound changes moment to moment. Our ears detect the sounds, but the signal is sent to the brain where cognitive function must make sense of it. In other words, listening is where the brain meets the ears! The brain is designed to receive certain details of sound in order to understand it. When it doesn’t get the correct details, our listening efforts are increased and our brains must work harder to focus on what is important and separate relevant sounds from competing noise. At the end of the day, this can be exhausting! How can we be proactive about our hearing health? Receiving an annual hearing evaluation is the most effective way to monitor changes in hearing and provide appropriate treatment to improve communication function. This enables us to keep active with friends and family and continue to participate in the activities we enjoy.

ARTICLE CHRISTINE E. WILSON, M.S., CCC-A

Annual hearing examinations are covered by Medicare and should be an integral part of all other health screenings. If you currently have hearing devices that you are not using, see your provider to review how they may provide the solutions you need.
