Bloom where you’re planted INVESTING IN OUR COMMUNITY ARIZONA’S HOMETOWN GROCER HERITAGE AT TUMBLEWEED PARK

Lifestyle Letter

Discover your roots I

moved across the country the summer before my junior year of high school. As an emotional 16-year-old girl, being transplanted from the East Coast to the Wild West was devastating. I was heartbroken and homesick and I can honestly say that I never thought I would permanently stay in Arizona. Fast forward 22 years and I can’t imagine living anywhere but Chandler. It’s the place where my family and close friends reside. It’s where my husband and I met and it’s where I became a mom. It’s also where my kids learned to cross the monkey bars at the park across the street and where we celebrated countless birthdays and anniversaries at our favorite neighborhood restaurant. All of these things have helped us plant roots in the community that we love. This is home. Our home grown issue is one of my favorites because it features hardworking individuals and local businesses that chose Chandler because they felt they could thrive in our community. We learn about businesses like Bashas’, a family owned and operated grocery store, started 84 years ago in Chandler by two brothers. Today, Arizona's hometown grocer has grown to more than 130 stores across the state and generously gives back to the neighborhoods it serves. Our feature story this month uncovers a secret gem. Tucked away in a warehouse behind Merchant Square, Highland Yard Vintage Market showcases dozens of local designers and vendors who have the opportunity to sell their incredible home and garden décor. Offered only four days each month, Highland Yard Vintage Market encompasses and celebrates the beauty of shopping local and supporting small businesses. We also get to meet Chandler native and Kneaders owner Kellan Sears who is thrilled to be offering delicious baked goods, sandwiches, soups and salads at his restaurant in his hometown. Stop by Kneaders and you'll most likely run into Kellan, and if you’re lucky his wife Sara and adorable baby girl Brynnan, who will give you a big smile and a warm welcome. Finally, we go on the journey of one East Valley special education teacher as she prepares to create a community garden for her students. Her motivation behind developing this garden is truly inspiring. I encourage you to take a moment to stop and appreciate your surroundings. After all, this is your home, too. Until next time, Meghann Finn Sepulveda Editor

Bashas’ Family of Stores gives back to the local community

E

ver since brothers Ike and Eddie Basha, Sr. opened the first Bashas’ grocery store in 1932, the Basha family has strived to offer outstanding products at affordable prices combined with exceptional customer service. As Ashley Shick, director of communications for Bashas’ Family of Stores notes, the local grocer is also committed to helping the community in a variety of ways. “Giving back to the community has been a cornerstone of the company since its inception,” she says. “One of the founding philosophies was that to be successful in business, you must be an active participant in enriching the communities in which you serve.”

MONTHLY GIVING

One of the most well-known ways Bashas’ Family of Stores does this, Shick says, is through the in-store “Charity of the Month” program. “Each month we collect donations at our registers for a designated non-profit organization to support the great work that the non-profit does,” she says, adding that the featured charity changes monthly and can also vary per store format, as Bashas’ Family of Stores owns and operates Bashas’, AJ’s Fine Foods and Food City stores across the state. “The vast majority of our community focus is hyper-local. As an Arizona-founded company, we pride ourselves on being supportive of as many homegrown organizations as we can,” Shick says. Non-profits are typically selected each fall for the following year, Shick says, and Bashas’ Family of Stores works alongside each organization to plan their fundraising campaign. “We encourage the non-profit to find engaging ways for our customers and employees, who we call members, to show their 16

support. Our goal with every Charity of the Month is to raise more funds than in previous years.” Make-A-Wish Arizona is the August Charity of the Month for Bashas’ and Food City stores across the state, Shick says. “We are inviting our customers to support this Arizona-grown organization through monetary BASHAS’ STRONG donations at our registers. All CHANDLER PRESENCE funds raised go directly back to Both Bashas’ headquarters Make-A-Wish Arizona to sup(corporate office is located near port its mission of making every Alma School and Ocotillo Roads wish kid’s dream a reality,” she in south Chandler) and distribusays, adding that from time to tion center (located at I-10 and time, they will also participate Chandler Blvd.) are based in in helping to make a wish kid’s Chandler. In addition to the Charity of the Month program, Bashas’ Family of Stores also supports a few walk/run fundraisers throughout the year.

“The JDRF Walk and the American Heart Association’s Heart Walk are organizations that we have supported for a number of years,” Shick says. “We provide on-site giveaways, in collaboration with our vendors, to the thousands of walkers that participate in each of these events.” Another way that Bashas’ Family of Stores supports the community, Shick says, is through fulfilling donation requests. “These are things like providing food for a school fundraiser or PTA meeting. We receive thousands of requests every year and help as many groups as we can,” she adds. Although the funds that are raised vary from year to year, Shick says there is definitely a steady growth in the generosity shown by Bashas’, Food City and AJ’s Fine Foods customers. “During the nearly 85 years of service to Arizona, Bashas’ Family of Stores has given more than $100 million dollars back to the community it serves. Every year we are able to serve hundreds of schools, churches and nonprofits through all of our giveback programs,” she says.

HOMETOWN HISTORY IN A

AMERICAN WAY MARKET CAFÉ TAKES YOU BACK TO SIMPLER TIMES

H

idden inside the Merchant Square Antique Market on Arizona Ave, is American Way Market, a new lunch restaurant open Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. What most people don’t realize when visiting the quaint café, is that the restaurant was built with pieces of Arizona history. The booths were from a country western bar that closed in Buckeye, the brick walls from a Tempe hatchery for chickens. Shelves holding vintage soda and local food purveyors were salvaged from the first Safeway from the Garfield District and a meat smoker came from the first Arizona Bill Johnson’s. All of these pieces bring a sense of home to the restaurant, which matches the hand crafted food on the menu. UNIQUE TWISTS ON AMERICAN FAVORITES

The food at American Way brings you back to a vintage environment when food was made from scratch. The menu is simple, but to execute, many hours are invested in each delicious dish. This menu was a collaboration between Mike Moore, proprietor of Merchant Square, Chef Jared Horton and Jared Allen of Proof Bread. Growing up, Moore’s pastime included barbecuing and smoking meats with his family. He knew that the concept would incorporate smoked meats and take diners back to simpler times, just like the antiques found at Merchant Square. Each week, the three also collaborate to create a Chef Special which often turns into a new menu item. One of these specials is the Smoked Egg Salad Sandwich. This unpretentious salad of bacon and eggs is elevated with a rich smoky f lavor. The eggs are first boiled, cooled and then slow smoked for hours. These distinct aromas bring an interesting twist to the classic sandwich. 18

A favorite lunch item on the menu is the Tri Tip Sandwich. The tri tip is smoked for hours and is a take on a North Coast version of the sandwich. The sourdough is from Proof Bread, and is the perfect accompaniment. The meat is drizzled with an Argentinainspired chimichurri sauce. For the price, this meaty sandwich is a hefty portion. There is an option to do any half sandwich or half salad, which is a great way to try a variety of menu options in one sitting. On my visit, I chose the American Harvest salad, which was a great addition to the Tri Tip sandwich. This rustic salad is a mix of roasted butternut squash, beets, pumpkin seeds, pecans, fresh goat cheese, and greens tossed in a champagne vinaigrette. For a heartier dish, there is also a list of Flatbread Pizzas with classic and interesting combinations. The handmade crusts are made from sourdough from Proof Bread. The crusts are cooked on a pizza stone and have a delicious chewy texture when finished. A new flavor is roasted corn and honey flatbread and a favorite on the menu is the mushroom trio. This take on a mushroom pizza includes olive oil, truffle oil, cheeses and a trio of mushrooms.

LOCAL FLAVORS

The menu also includes soups, potato salad, slaw and other sides dishes. In the morning, Proof Bread bakes pastries and a coffee menu showcases Peixoto coffee. Each dish is made from scratch which can add to the amount of time you'll spend at the restaurant, but the wait is worth it for a simple and delicious meal. This allows time to pick out your favorite vintage soda flavor and shop for local food items. American Way Market has also developed a call ahead order process so that your food is ready when you arrive. After lunch, be sure you to take some time to explore the antique booths filled with vintage treasures at Merchant Square, located just outside the restaurant. Highland Yard Vintage Market

Local businesses offer handmade gifts and décor ARTICLE ERICA FORST | PHOTOGRAPHY MANDY HANK PHOTOGRAPHY

n a quiet building behind Merchant Square, vendors work to finish filling a 6,000 square foot warehouse. The space will soon come alive for four days to showcase home furnishings and garden décor. As designers put their final touches on arrangements, the doors open and music plays. Customers dance through the aisles of this air conditioned venue and browse through items from around the globe. GONE JUNKIN'

Highland Yard Vintage Market, along with American Way Café and Merchant Square, sits on seven acres of land offering easy access to visiting patrons. For one of the market’s creators, Jill Herman, the love of design and unique home décor started at a young age. “When I was young, my mother took me to a furniture warehouse and I was hooked,” says Herman. “My grandfather had an old garage stuffed with treasures and I thought it was the most fascinating place ever.” Herman ended up leaving a 25 year career at the age of 48 to help local artisans promote their businesses. She started the JunkNLove network in 2011. 20

Chandler Lifestyle | August 2016

“People would come to my home and ask me where I bought all of my home décor," she says. "I wanted a way to share all of the amazing local artists, their brick and mortar home décor and gift shops with my friends.” JunkNLove, a central source of local markets, independent artisans, and workshops, has grown to more than 50,000 followers across four platforms. Vendors can use the network to list their businesses and consumers can browse the website to find vendors and learn about special events. Herman’s love for vintage pieces and community culture led to the creation of Highland Yard Vintage Market. The market, which opened in April 2016, was founded by Herman and Merchant Square owner Mike Moore. The market gives those in the community who enjoy vintage charm the opportunity to come together in a comfortable environment. From antique clocks to new throw pillows, the market offers unique pieces that provide stylish f lair to any home.

MIX IT UP

After Highland Yard Vintage Market’s four-day event each month, the warehouse is cleared out and readied for more than 30 of Arizona's most popular vendors to display their goods. Sellers restock inventory and restyle the space with a fresh, new look. Each month has a different theme which coincides with its corresponding season. Upcoming themes include: “Let's Get Organized” during August, “What's Hot” in September, and “Shades of Fall” in October. The ever-changing atmosphere creates a new experience for shoppers every month. FAMILY FUN

The market is not simply for shopping. A restaurant on site brings in specialty foods for visitors’ eating enjoyment. Locally Owned

Long-time Chandler resident fulfills dream of owning a local business SPOTLIGHT ON KNEADERS BAKERY AND CAFÉ ARTICLE ALISON STANTON | PHOTOGRAPHY TONIA JOHNSTON PHOTOGRAPHY

W

hen he was 15, Kellen Sears began working in local restaurants. Over the years, Sears realized that although he loves the restaurant industry, he has an entrepreneurial spirit that yearned to own his own business. “As I grew older, I realized I wasn’t as happy working for others and I knew I fit in with restaurants,” he says. After working as a manager for some local eateries, Sears says he found an ownership opportunity with Kneaders Bakery and Café. In September, 2015, Sears opened his Kneaders location at Queen Creek and Alma School Roads in Chandler. “I absolutely loved the concept. It felt like I was at my grandma’s house when I went there, not to mention the food was way better than every other bakery I had been to,” he says. Sears, who moved to Chandler when he was 9 and has been a proud resident for 22 years, says he has known for some time that he wanted to own a local business. “I had a lot of other chances to open other locations, but I knew there was a Chandler store in the works and I wouldn’t do it anywhere else,” he says. “My dream has always been to operate a business in my hometown. Now I can finally give back to the city that gave so much to me.” 22

HOMEMADE GOODNESS

One of the things that helps to set Kneaders apart, Sears says, is that all of the bread is made completely from scratch in-house, every single day. “Our French country sourdough has four ingredients: flour, salt, water, and levain, which is a natural living yeast, as opposed to a machine made yeast. It never comes frozen or baked in another location,” Sears says, adding that the rest of the breads have the same simple formulas, with the addition of maybe a couple more ingredients. “You cannot find bread like this anywhere else, because it has a shelf life of only three to four days. I believe in having a healthier and more quality product to serve to people, especially in today’s age where everything is more about preservatives and junk than actual food.” All of the sandwiches at Kneaders are made with the fresh bread, Sears says, and every salad or soup also comes with a slice. Kneaders also has a retail boutique, which Sears says contributes to the feeling that customers have walked into their grandma’s house. Although Kneaders offers extensive breakfast and lunch menus that feature favorites like omelettes, pancakes, 42 different madefrom-scratch pastries, salads, sandwiches and soups, he said his two

favorites are currently the turkey bacon avocado sandwich on focaccia, and the chunky cinnamon French toast. “The French toast is to die for, and it is one of our most featured items, even though we only serve breakfast from 7 to 11 a.m.,” Sears says. “It is made from our homemade chunky cinnamon bread and is served with whipped topping, strawberries, and our homemade caramel syrup.”

“I love seeing a lot of the same people day in and day out, learning about their lives and finding out how their weekends went,” he says, adding that he hopes that over time he will know the majority of his clientele by name. “I love people, and I love having a quality product that I know is well above average.”

GIVING BACK

Sears says he is also committed to helping the Chandler community whenever possible. “I love giving back to local schools, and especially the Chandler Police Department,” he says. “I have had a few opportunities to reach out to them and show them my gratitude for putting their lives at stake every day. When I get to serve those who tirelessly serve me and my family, it makes me feel great.” Sears says getting to know his many regular customers is also a major highlight of his day and one of the best parts about owning his own business.

Tumbleweed Park GROWN BY THE COMMUNITY ARTICLE JACQUELINE BINSFELD | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

C

handler is home to a multitude of beautiful parks, none of which would be here if it were not for the hard work and dedication of the community. This is well demonstrated by Tumbleweed Park, which holds the title of the city’s largest park. Claud Cluff, the park maintenance supervisor, explains how the park was grown by the committed and caring members of Chandler. CONTRIBUTIONS BY THE CITY

In the 1990’s, the city of Chandler bought 160 acres of land to build the park. Cluff, who has been a part of Tumbleweed Park since its beginning, was involved in its early development and was in charge of the plant selection. He explains that the park began with a tennis center and expanded to include three football and soccer fields, a recreation center, 15 ramadas, and a large playground. The tennis center, although the park ’s oldest asset, features 15 newly renovated courts that residents and guests can enjoy. The community’s youth has fun on the fields 24

through football and soccer programs, while adults can team up for Tumbleweed Park the f lag-football 2250 S. McQueen Rd. league. The recreChandler, Arizona ChandlerAZ.gov ation center holds a fitness center and various classes for any age. Guests can rent a ramada for their next birthday party, work event, or family barbecue. The playground, titled “Playtopia,” sprawls over three acres and is enjoyed by children from all over. Tumbleweed Park has fun for the whole family to enjoy together including the annual Chandler Ostrich Festival, as well as the July 4th Fireworks Spectacular. The city has expanded Tumbleweed Park so that it now covers 205 acres, with over 100 acres developed and plans to build more.

SERVICE FROM STUDENTS

The park is also home to a community garden made possible by the Future Farmers of America, a student organization at Chandler High School. Cluff explains that when the park was no longer able to devote the time and resources necessary for the garden, the students stepped in and are now responsible for tending the seven acre garden. The club grows and sells produce to send their students to leadership conferences and generously donates a portion of the food to food banks. A CULTURAL EXPERIENCE

If visitors want a cultural learning experience on their next visit to Tumbleweed Park, they have the option of visiting not just one, but two museums. This spacious park holds both the Arizona Railway Museum and the Chandler Museum’s Tumbleweed Ranch. The Arizona Railway Museum allows visitors to tour a variety of full-size train cars, from engines to passenger and freight cars, as well as cranes. If guests are interested in learning about Chandler’s rich farming history, Tumbleweed Ranch will allow them to live it by exploring two historic houses and the ranch itself. The Chandler Museum also hosts the park’s Chuck Wagon Cook-Off in November, one of Cluff’s favorite events. MAKE YOUR OWN MEMORIES AT TUMBLEWEED PARK

If you want to experience all this fun yourself or join the community in helping Tumbleweed Park grow, you can visit the park at 2250 S. McQueen Rd. For more information, visit ChandlerAZ.gov. August 2016 | Chandler Lifestyle

Make Your Outdoor Space Wildlife-Friendly ARTICLE JACQUELINE BINSFELD | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

A

s we take the time to make ourselves more comfortable during the heat of the summer, we can do the same for the wildlife around us. Krys Hammers, president of the Desert Rivers Audubon Society, explains that it is important to do so because “as cities grow and sprawl, we are taking up much of that habitat that used to be available to wildlife.” Helping out our animal neighbors does not have to be a big chore. In fact, Hammers believes that we can “live in harmony” with the wildlife, birds in particular, and provides insight on how to do so. She explains that animals need food, shelter and water for survival. By avoiding over-pruning, we can provide “food from blooms and seeds on our plants.” Hummingbirds love the flowers and use them to drink nectar. Luscious plants also create a natural shelter for the wildlife.

native plants to attract native wildlife, we use less water, which is such a precious resource in the desert.” This is not only a financial asset by lowering our water bills, but also helps the community prosper as it saves water for “future generations and [keeps] our rivers flowing.” She further explains that because animals prefer the plants to not be over-pruned, we face much less maintenance. Finally, wildlife-friendly homes enjoy the beauty that comes with having lush plants and frequent animal visitors. Hammers remarks that birds add lovely color and music to gardens and “their antics can be quite captivating.” To learn more about how you can make your home more welcoming to the birds and other creatures around us, visit the fourth annual Tour de Bird on Nov. 5, an event held by Desert Rivers Audubon in conjunction with the Environmental Education Center (EEC) at Veterans Oasis Park. You will have the chance

Hammers adds that “songbirds like to have bushy plants for shelter and leaf litter to scratch around in for bugs.” Also be sure to check out local stores, such as Wild Birds Unlimited, for more ways to feed your bird guests. It is important for animals to have ample access to water, especially in the Arizona desert. To help the wildlife, Hammers suggests implementing into your yard a bird bath, mister or anything that makes water available. She warns that water can attract mosquitos, but this can be easily prevented by making sure that the water is moving. Hammers also recommends looking for products with water recycling features, as to avoid waste. In helping the wildlife to have a friendly-home, you will see benefits of your own. Hammers explains that “if we plant our yards with

to see some of the best “bird-friendly gardens” in the community. Hammers’ yard has previously been featured and will once again be on the tour this year. She explains that the purpose of this tour is “to demonstrate that you can have an attractive yard with native plants that is low maintenance and attracts wildlife using all these principles.” You can purchase tickets for $15 or $10 if you buy them online at Desertriversaudubon.org. The EEC also offers classes on making your home wildlife friendly and a beginner’s bird class, both taught by Hammers. To sign up for these classes or to lean more information, you can visit the EEC or simply go to ChandlerAZ.gov/recreation. Parting Thoughts

ARTICLE BRIGITTE MEANS, SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER AT HIGHLAND HIGH SCHOOL

T

here is just something special about spending time in a garden. Whether it is simply sitting and enjoying the surrounding beauty or getting our hands deep into the soil, all of our senses can be engaged and so many lessons can be learned. Growing up in Chandler, as a child I was drawn to nature. My mother and my grandparents had beautiful gardens that I spent time in observing, helping, learning, and dreaming. I now live in Gilbert and have been working as a high school special education teacher for Gilbert Public Schools for 16 years. I’m blessed to teach incredible young adults with intellectual and cognitive disabilities, and I feel fortunate to work for an “A” rated school district that offers innovative and creative programs that ensure all students are college and career ready. Three years ago I transferred to a Transition Program at Highland High School. Our unique transition programs focus on preparing our students with special needs the opportunity for meaningful employment, while also providing campus and community based experiences that foster increased independence. Our instructional activities focus on daily and adult living skills, home care and cooking, leisure and recreation, community access, social and communication skills, health and self-advocacy, and vocational skills. Gardening can engage students and be a tool to teach skills in each of these areas. My classroom is designed to simulate an apartment setting, and outside of our portable is the most perfect space for a garden. As soon 34

Chandler Lifestyle | August 2016

as I moved to Highland, I began envisioning my students gardening, seeing the endless possibilities that could come come from their experiences. I imagined them growing food that they could prepare for lunch, learning about nutrition and sustainability. I visualized them spending time together socializing in the garden area, taking a break to calm down and relieve stress, or pulling weeds and squeezing soil in their hands for needed sensory activities. I could see us working as a team to care for the garden, and the patience, responsibility and accomplishment they could gain. I brainstormed lists of vocational skills they could learn, occupational and physical therapy needs that could be met, and the movement and exercise they could experience all through gardening. For the past three years I’ve continued to see the possibilities as I would look out our classroom door. Funding to start this type of project was the challenge, but at the end of this past school year I decided it was time to do more than just imagine. Not knowing what to expect, I reached out using social media, posting on two Facebook groups. The response I received was incredible and overwhelming. Individuals, families, groups, non-profits, and businesses all offered their support to make this dream a reality. With the generous support and donations of Blue Agave Landscape and a local Gilbert non-profit, Step Up USA, we plan to have our garden built, planted and thriving by the fall.
