Lifestyle Letter

Let's hear it for the Boys! JUNE 2017

T

here’s no place like Carlsbad in the summer.., events, fairs, brewfests, galas, surf contests, concerts, flowers, barbeques and evening strolls. Yes, the traffic is even worse, restaurants have long waits and there are tourists everywhere…but…that is all part of what makes Carlsbad come alive and what supports our thriving community! Our summer kickoff issue is dedicated to “The Boys”. Only in Carlsbad will you find surfing corporate style. We discovered young executives combining their love of surf and community with their business prowess to enhance the lives of others around them…all while ripping it up together. I always thought of whiskey as a man’s drink. Guess what ladies???? Henebery Whiskey meets the scrutiny of the toughest whiskey connoisseur, but when combined with specialty ingredients to make a unique cocktail, like “The Local”, it is refreshing, soothing and down-right delicious. Please join Carlsbad Lifestyle, North County Board Meeting and Henebery Whiskey in supporting the very cool non-profit¸ Urban Surf 4 Kids, by ordering the oh-so-delicious, newly designed, cocktail “The Local” at your favorite Carlsbad restaurant or bar. A dollar from each drink will go to the Urban Surf 4 Kids! Let’s do this together!

AROUND TOWN FASHION, FLOWERS AND FIDO Almost 400 guests and many dogs flocked to the Carlsbad Flower Fields on the evening of April 6th for the inaugural Carlsbad event, “Fashion, Flowers & Fido”. This marked the first time pet owners were invited to bring their “friendly” dogs to the world-famous Carlsbad Flower Fields. Carlsbad Mayor Matt Hall greeted the audience from the runway and warmly welcomed everyone to enjoy this new, unique to Carlsbad, special event. Guests received a “Wag & Swag Bag” with gifts for both dogs and their “people”. The evening’s festivities included a fashion show featuring designer brands from The Carlsbad Premium Outlets, with models walking down the “Haute Dog” runway along with fashionably-attired adoptable dogs from Rancho Coastal Humane Society. Special guest models - all dog lovers - included Carlsbad City Council member and Mayor Pro Tem Keith Blackburn, Carlsbad Chief of Police Neil

In a star-studded event on April 8, music icon Graham Nash, community champions and music education patrons came together to “Play it Forward” at NAMM’s Museum of Making Music’s (MoMM) gala fundraiser event, “An Evening with Graham Nash.” The annual event was attended by 170 guests and raised over $70,000 in donations that will grant music education programs, museum access and scholarships to both children and adults in the community. The evening’s main event included an hour-long concert performance by Nash, accompanied by guitarist Shane Fontayne (Lone Justice, Sting, Bruce Springsteen). The event also officially launched “The Photography of Graham Nash,” a new gallery exhibit featuring 29 photographs of famed artists photographed by Nash, including Joni Mitchell, Johnny Cash, Jerry Garcia, Judy Collins (with Stephen Stills), Neil Young, Cass Elliot, Taj Majal, David

AVIARA OAKS AND CALAVERA HILLS MIDDLE SCHOOLS NAMED CALIFORNIA GOLD RIBBON SCHOOLS State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson announced this year’s California Gold Ribbon Schools Award recipients, and two Carlsbad Unified middle schools are among the honorees. Both Calavera Hills Middle School (CHMS) and Aviara Oaks Middle School have been chosen for this award. Schools are selected based on applications they submit describing their model programs supporting student success that can be replicated by other schools. Of over 2,600 public middle and high schools in California, and 477 that applied for the recognition, only 275 are being honored as Gold Ribbon Schools for 2017. “I congratulate CHMS and AOMS for this accomplishment,” said Superintendent Benjamin Churchill. “These schools represent what is best in Carlsbad Unified—a challenging curriculum, a student-centered culture, and room for creative risk-taking and hands-on learning.”

enebery Whiskey, a 90 proof rye whiskey made with organic ingredients, dates

back to 1851 in Peoria, Illinois, where it was farm-to-bottle produced by Matthew Henebery. His great-great-great grandson-in law, Jesse Fanning, is now resurrecting the brand that ceased to exist when Matthew passed. Jesse, along with his family; including his mother, father-in-law and wife, are resurrecting the family name by recreating the original Henebery labels and following the business plan that Matthew had sketched over 100 years ago. They are also proud to be family-operated and owned. Currently, Jesse is making the whiskey from grain to bottle, in house, at his Vista distillery. Visitors can observe the distilling process while sampling various whiskies. The barrel program that Jesse created edu-
