SHARING SUSSEX BUSINESS STORIES SINCE 1975

All business is symbiotic in nature. You can be inspiring your peers one day, learning from them the next. In the end, people buy people. That makes sharing our stories the most compelling way to connect with one another. What’s needed is a platform to embrace and empower our regional business ecosystem. Where varied backgrounds and perspectives provide new context. Harnessing potential, enabling growth. And at the heart of it, a dedicated term of curators unlocking insights for the good of us all. So we’re changing the way people think of connecting. Because we believe in self-reflection, rather than self-promotion. By demystifying the art of storytelling, we deliver authentic thought leadership through events, publishing and broadcast media. We come together to discover, share and grow. But we won’t be limited by geography, or our imagination. Instead, we’ll seek out local leaders, visionaries and experts, wherever great businesses thrive. Growing communities, in partnership with the businesses that power them. And nurturing the enterpreneurial spirit in everyone.

Are calmer waters forecast for the mortgage market in 2024?

CEO of SEICO Mortgages, Rob Starr shares his outlook on the mortgage market for the coming year.

Is 2024 going to offer

Finance

any more stability in

the mortgage market than 2023? Well,

we certainly hope

it will. For the mortgage and property

market 2023 was like continuous wild days at sea - bumpy, unpredictable,

and perhaps not for the faint hearted.

Mortgage rates never seemed to settle and property sales were almost non-

existent. So will that continue in 2024? Well, I, for one, do not think so. Since the last quarter of last year we have

seen the Bank of England hold the base rate multiple times and we have seen

Lenders across the board offering fixed rates around the 4% mark.

Sure, this is still way more than the

1.5%-2% deals we used to see, but it is way better than the 6%s that appeared from nowhere. The reality is that the

good old 1% days are well and truly

over and the new normal looks like it is going to be between 3.5%-4.5%. But the important thing, the indicator that

the property market will start to recover,

is not the rate of interest per say, but the stability of the deals on offer.

Once we see rates settled, which we are not far off seeing, then confidence will

rise again, they should not go to the silly numbers we saw a few years back and

this will make property purchasing once again a safe and desirable thing to do, both for buying your own home or for future growth potential.

For someone with an existing mortgage

that is about to expire it is perhaps time to start looking at securing a new deal

as rates start to settle. The best time to do this is around 6 months before your current rate ends. You will be able to

get a new deal right away and hold it in

What does 2024 look like if you want to raise business finance? Asks Andy Page, Head of Commercial Finance at Seico Group No two years are

Finance

the same, but

despite that 2023 felt different to most. We started the year with

a hangover, not just from the festive

period but mainly caused by the fallout from the Truss administration. The

Bank of England raised the base rate steadily for the first three quarters, before pausing for breath on 3rd

August. It may not feel like it, but this

means that the rate has stood still for four months.

The pressure on rates is now downward - at the time of writing the five-year

rate is below 4%, still nowhere near the

rates of 2020 but those rates were never going to be the ‘new normal’. My view is that business people have come to

accept that the days of ultra-low rates are behind us and there is a general

sigh of relief that we are now hearing

predictions of B of E rate cuts potentially as early as March.

So, perhaps, those entrepreneurs who held off making investment decisions

and property deals last year will decide that now is the time to move. This will usually involve the raising of finance and the positive news is that banks

have money to lend. In fact, the number of commercial lenders who are in the

market has continued to grow, even in the face of the challenges we faced in the last 18 months.

I am seeing keener rates in the

market and a willingness to lend to

all sectors, particularly to property-

based operators. If banks don’t lend

money, they cannot turn a profit and from what I can see they have set

themselves sizeable growth targets for the year - this means that money is there to lend to customers.

Why you should invest in management accounts in 2024 Joshua Bowen, Head of Outsourced Finance Function at Carpenter Box, delves into what management accounts are, why they are so important and some of the key benefits for organisations looking to thrive in 2024. Management

Finance

accounts are a set

of financial reports

and statements that provide detailed

insights into the financial performance and position of a business. These accounts typically include key

financial indicators, such as income

statements, balance sheets, and cash

flow statements, tailored to the specific needs of internal stakeholders.

Unlike statutory financial statements

which are prepared for external parties, management accounts are designed

for the internal management team and

can be customised to focus on specific

aspects of the business. The information

14 www.sussexbusinessgroup.co.uk

presented in management accounts aids in assessing the company’s financial

health, identifying trends, and evaluating the success of strategic initiatives. This financial reporting tool is crucial for

managers to make informed decisions, allocate resources efficiently, and

plan for the future, contributing to the overall success and sustainability of the organisation.

Importance of management accounts Management accounts provide

a comprehensive overview of an

organisation’s performance, allowing stakeholders to gain insights into

various aspects of the business. They help aid business leaders in three key areas of the business:

1. Strategic decision making

Management accounts play a pivotal role in facilitating strategic decision

making for business owners. By offering real-time financial data, these accounts provide a dynamic snapshot of a

company’s financial health, allowing

leaders to respond promptly to market changes and emerging opportunities.

Armed with up-to-date information on

revenues, expenses, and overall financial performance, business owners can

make well-informed decisions that align

with the strategic goals of the company. Whether considering expansion,

investment, or cost-cutting measures,

the real-time insights from management accounts empower decision-makers to

navigate the complexities of the business

landscape with confidence and foresight. 2. Performance evaluation

Management accounts serve as a critical tool for evaluating the performance of

different business units or projects within an organisation. By analysing detailed

financial reports, business owners can

identify areas of strength and weakness, allocating resources strategically to

optimise overall performance. Whether assessing the profitability of a specific

product line or evaluating the efficiency

of a department, management accounts

offer a granular view of financial metrics. This enables business owners to make data-driven decisions about resource allocation, process improvements, or

even divestment, fostering a culture of

continuous improvement and efficiency within the organisation.

3. Forecasting and planning

The role of management accounts in

forecasting and planning is paramount for businesses aiming for sustainable

growth. These accounts provide valuable

insights into financial trends and patterns, enabling business owners to anticipate future scenarios with a high degree of accuracy. By extrapolating data from

past and current financial performance,

management accounts assist in projecting future revenues, expenses, and cash

flows. This foresight is instrumental in

developing robust strategic plans, guiding business owners in setting realistic goals, and identifying potential challenges.

Whether preparing for market fluctuations or planning for expansion, the ability to

forecast based on management accounts empowers businesses to proactively position themselves for success in a

rapidly changing economic environment. Benefits to business owners

As management accounts don’t follow a

statutory format, it allows management to

tailor the reports to give them the answers

to the questions they feel they need to run the business. The benefits achieved from

What was your biggest highlight last year?

Apart from our 10-year business

enthusiasm and experience. We’re now a team of 13 and, to this day, no one

has ever left us – and we’d never want them to, either.

So, what’s the secret to maintaining a healthy work culture?

Our culture is built on a philosophy

that’s become somewhat of a mantra to us: “None of us take ourselves too seriously, but as a business we take what we do very seriously.” In other

words, we want every team member to feel they can be themselves and

ask for support whenever it’s needed. Insurance isn’t the most glamorous

Employment law: the law and redundancies As the economy continues to stutter and arguably is still in decline, many businesses are worried about how to deal with staff. Interest rates increasing borrowing costs, and continued albeit slower inflation, mean redundancies are inevitable, writes Alex Jones, Managing Director of 365 Employment Law. The issue of staff

Legal

redundancies will be in the news

as the economic

situation deteriorates,

particularly in certain industries. Employers that have held off on

redundancies would be wise to consider the next steps they might want to take, before the situation for them becomes

critical. How those redundancies

happen is important from both a reason perspective, but given a process must be followed, also a procedural one. If

employers make redundancies quickly

in the autumn as financial problems hit them, they will face difficulty arguing

that dismissals are not, at the very least, procedurally unfair.

If the number of affected staff is over

20, then collective rules apply. I do not focus on those for the purpose of this article, but on the smaller number of redundancies that affect SMEs on a

more regular basis, and that will have to be faced when they are faced with

those financial pressures. Many of these considerations should already be in the mind of employers.

cost saving purposes, or for

re-organisation purposes. As an example, in hospitality, a

widely affected area as energy bills become unaffordable, a bar owner may have two

bar managers, both of whom share shifts, so both are

needed. The employer may

decide to make one of those redundant to save costs,

despite the work need being there, and do some of the

shifts themself. That would be a genuine redundancy, as the

requirement for a bar manager has ceased. They would of course have to have a fair

selection process to decide

redundancy of staff sets out that it

can happen in one of three situations - business closure, workplace

closure (ie the location where the

employee worked closes) and, the most commonly used, a reduction

in the need for staff to do work of a particular kind.

A reduction in the need for staff to do work of a particular kind is the most

common route to staff redundancies at this time. The staff are redundant if the employer no longer has the

requirement for staff to do work of a

particular kind. The test is not whether the work still exists, but whether or

What will abolishing Inheritance Tax mean for you?

Emma Gadd, Paralegal, Private Client at Mayo Wynne Baxter, explains. With the

Legal

Conservative Party’s recent suggestion of abolishing

inheritance tax, some

of our clients have joked they’ll just

need to make sure they hold out a bit longer before ‘kicking the bucket’,

to ensure their estate isn’t hit with a large inheritance tax bill. However,

once we’ve delved a little bit deeper into their financial affairs and been able to estimate the value of their

20 www.sussexbusinessgroup.co.uk

estates, we’ve discovered their estates wouldn’t have had to pay it anyway.

We’re sure it’s a great relief for them to know they can now ‘pop their clogs’ without time constraints!

Many people are worried by the idea of their estate having to pay inheritance tax, with 31% of those surveyed by

YouGov for The Times believing their estate would be liable to pay it. The

reality is much more positive for the

public’s pocket, with less than 4% of

estates paying inheritance tax in 2020 to 2021. So why is there this big gap

in the public’s perception of what they will need to pay and the reality? Does

this mean the suggestion of abolishing inheritance tax would not affect most

of the UK population, or simply affect only the very rich?

Inheritance tax is essentially a tax

affected by inheritance tax, why are the Conservative Party so keen to

“abolish” it? Public perception has a significant impact, with many calling it the ‘most hated tax’. Additionally, it often affects those in the middle wealth category the most. Those

without significant assets are easily within the tax free allowances, and those with significant wealth take

legal and financial advice to help to

limit their liability. Those who are often caught out are the middle earners

wanting to pass on assets such as

their family home and the idea of being able to do this “tax free” is a very emotive one.

With the Nil Rate Band confirmed as

pulled into this middle earner category.

is distributed to their beneficiaries, so whilst the beneficiaries will receive a reduced sum due to tax, it is not, as some think, having to come directly

from the beneficiaries’ own pockets. Every individual has a personal

allowance called a Nil Rate Band,

which is the maximum value of assets

they can pass on without incurring any

inheritance tax and is so called because any value of estate under this amount is

taxed at nil percentage. As of April 2009 this allowance has been £325,000. In

simple terms, the value of their estate over this would then be subject to inheritance tax at 40%.

Since October 2007 it has also been possible to transfer any unused Nil Rate Band from your late spouse/

civil partner. For example, if on the

death of your spouse/civil partner their estate passed tax free to you, then on your death your estate would benefit

from your late spouse’s/civil partner’s Nil Rate Band, giving your estate a

elements converge to shape a holistic approach in supporting healthy and sustainable organisations.

Roffey Park Institute, established in

1946, has a rich history rooted in the aftermath of World War II. Originally founded as a response to the need

for post-war reconstruction and the

development of leadership skills, the institute began its journey in Roffey Park, a country estate in Sussex,

England. In its early years, Roffey Park focused on providing training and

development programmes for managers

and leaders, recognising the importance of effective leadership in rebuilding

and revitalising post-war society. The

Institute’s commitment to experiential

learning and its emphasis on personal and professional development set the foundation for its enduring impact on leadership education.

Over the decades, Roffey Park has

evolved to meet the changing needs of the business and organisational

landscape. It has expanded its offerings to include a diverse range of solutions

and services, catering to both individual

leaders and entire organisations, as well as opening its European headquarters in Dublin, Ireland. The Institute has

gained recognition for its innovative

approach to leadership development,

incorporating elements of psychology,

at work. The Roffey Park difference lies in the blend of equipping individuals,

teams and organisations with the tools and techniques needed for success

with the priceless connection of peer conversation for lasting impact.

Claire Singlehurst, Director of Talent at

Macmillan recently shared her experience about attending a virtual programme with Roffey Park, on LinkedIn.

“I think it’s the same for us all the

moment. Lots going on at home and

at work, and it’s a challenge at times to juggle all of that, and definitely

makes it difficult to find time for self

development. On Monday, I started a 3 x half day facilitation skills programme with Roffey Park Institute and to be

honest, I went into it feeling like there

were so many other things that deserved my time and attention. How wrong I

was! The course content was excellent and I have learned so much. But - the power of this for me was the brilliant cohort, who all showed up with so

much energy, vulnerability and support

each day. At Macmillan, we’re about to embark on a brand new ‘Managing at Macmillan’ development programme, and I know that most if not all of our

managers could enter into the start of this with a similar mindset to mine on

Monday morning. But I’m feeling super

excited that we have chosen a cohort approach, where we’ll all go through

the learning alongside the same group

for the whole thing. I believed it before, but have been reminded today of the power of those relationships that are built, the accelerated psychological

safety you achieve and just how much

more you can get done in a supportive and energetic group. I can’t wait to

get the cohorts going and to see and feel the energy it creates across our management teams...bring it on!”

Roffey Park Institute places a premium on creating environments that foster collaboration and active learning.

At Datacove, we’ve been working

with Silicon Brighton since the start. Well, since before the start to be

consultancy, specialising in customer

analytics (unearthing your most valuable

customers), marketing analytics (to

maximise campaign impact) and process automation (taking away those time

commanding business tasks forever). One of the values that’s always

been closest to my heart is fostering close relationships by empowering

our communities. Before I moved to Brighton and started my business,

I’d been a part of some fantastic and

welcoming tech communities back in London. I’d longed to find something similar when arriving on the South

Coast, but there’s wasn’t much down here and so I continued to travel up

to London to fuel that bit of me that

craved meeting other like-minded tech professionals – but with my heart set

on creating something similar back in

my new home. It was therefore fitting

that through a London-based meetup, I was introduced to one of the other

co-founders of BrightonR – and perhaps twice as fitting that this was at precisely the time Silicon Brighton was setting up on the South coast. Since that day in 2019, we’ve never looked back.

So what is BrightonR, I hear you ask? It’s a local community of people that code or have an interest in the R

programming language. It follows on from similar groups held in London

(where us co-founders effectively met) and other cities across the globe.

The first BrightonR meetup, in January

2020 was honestly a hundred times the

success I think any of us imagined. Over

50 people through the door and we kept having to put the chairs out further and further back! At step one, we’d found our community.

Moving forward, as Datacove

continued to grow, I had always made it clear we weren’t one trick ponies.

Creating actionable insights from data

requires a multitude of skills and it was important we had a team to match

it. So, we introduced Python to the

mix. Like R, Python is a programming language used by analysts and

developers alike (and even taught to

kids in schools nowadays). When the local Python user group needed a

new organiser, it therefore felt like the perfect fit for our community minded

team to take on – and over a year later, it is one of the strongest groups in Brighton if I do say so myself.

But it wasn’t just the Python group

3 top tips to widen your professional network in 2024

1. F ind your community at a monthly meetup.

Bill Withers was onto something - we all need somebody to lean on. Widening your professional network helps you,

particularly during a crisis. But knowing somebody at face value is different to truly leaning on someone you trust.

a brilliant community that meets monthly. 2. T ry something new or go to a new event.

It can be easy to find yourself mingling with the same groups of people over and over again. But as this happens, you also find

that your professional network network just doesn’t seem to get any wider.

Which is why we encourage all our

clients, friends and colleagues to try something new. Consider joining a

Business Show for a new networking for something new.

3. G ive back to the community

Volunteering or helping others is a great

way to widen your professional network. By giving time to others, you cross

paths with people you may never have connected with otherwise.

MAXUS Food Appeal, run by MAXUS UK and Ireland. After witnessing the appeal’s tremendous success last

year, Rivervale aspired to extend their contribution beyond just lending a

vehicle. In a sincere effort to give back to the community, the Rivervale team

donated, not only resources but also, their time and energy.

The collaboration now stands as a testament to Rivervale’s ethos of

community support. It reflects a deep

understanding that true support extends beyond financial aid; it’s about being present, involved, and empathetic

to the needs of those around us. As

Christmas lights twinkle, the actions of

the Rivervale team shine just as brightly, bringing hope and sustenance to many. In conclusion, Rivervale’s involvement with FareShare Sussex and Surrey

Food Bank Charity goes beyond mere corporate social responsibility. It’s a powerful narrative of empathy, hard

work, community spirit, and the true spirit of Christmas.

A Rivervale spokesperson said: “We

hope to set a precedent for businesses

to contribute resources and invest their hearts and time into making a tangible difference in their communities.”

The circular economy in Brighton & Hove: planning a strategy for your business How can your business take more circular actions in 2024? Last month Brighton Chamber, in partnership with Brighton & Hove Loop, brought together a panel of circular economy businesses to share their insights and discuss the challenges facing businesses wanting to create a circular strategy for the new year. prioritises sustainability, longevity, and

the reduction of environmental impact. At this event, we heard from three people practising these circular principles:

Originating from a light-hearted joke,

the club has blossomed into a beloved community cornerstone, redefining the art of social connection. In mid-2023,

As we celebrate this half-year

milestone, it’s evident that the club has done more than just thrive; it

has sparked a cultural renaissance.
