Morris & Co. Exclusive

WALLPAPER EDIT II Arriving in December last year, we were delighted to welcome the fruits of our latest collaboration with the team at Sanderson Design Group for Morris & Co. Home of the original William Morris wallpaper designs. So if you have not already caught it, let us introduce you to some of our latest collection: Morris & Co. Exclusive Wallpaper Edit II, featuring more of the best-loved treasures from Morris & Co. “What is an artist but a workman who is determined that, whatever else happens, his work shall be excellent?” – William Morris, Hopes And Fears For Art, 1882 A sentiment which we hope Morris would recognise in our latest collection of beautiful wallpapers, of which we are very proud. Arbutus: A traditional surface printed, hand painted effect wallcovering featuring trailing leaves and vibrant berries. This printing process means that the surface applied paint is unique to each roll, as it allows the ink to move a little, just as the original block printers would have done.

Honeysuckle & Tulip

Honeysuckle & Tulip: Inspired by Morris’ watercolour paintings of Honeysuckle from 1876, this early Morris design creates a trellis effect with large tulips and stylised honeysuckle. We absolutely love this gold colourway.

Brer Rabbit

Brer Rabbit: The classic bird and rabbit symmetrical design, featuring the cheeky protagonist of a children’s book from the 19th century, is super sweet in this blush colourway and would make the perfect nursery décor. Acorn: Originally a hand block, this deceptively simple, single colour design, with willow, oak leaves and acorns has a pleasing symmetrical pattern. A wonderful way to add a contemporary twist to the Country Cottage look and make it available for those of us, who don’t live in the perfect country cottage. HARNESSES THE POWER OF THE EARTH

Harlequin’s newest collection, REFLECT, embraces colour, tactility and the expressive formations found in the natural world in this artistically composed collection of wallpapers. A delightful new collection of designs which express architectural influences, modern art, and the organic shapes of Nature. Bringing together new designs and revisiting some existing favourites all brought together with earthy, grounded tones, much-loved by Harlequin.

onto a fibrous, non-woven paper, which elevates the expressive textures and enhances the blending of the colours. Shown here is the Rosewood/ Seaglass colourway with its warm baked terracotta, stone and taupe colours.

“The palette of colours that wash across the entire collection with coast-to-coast clarity, ranges from earthy and grounded, to sublimely muted, and shadowy. Globally appealing, REFLECT is connected to the earth and its cultural beauty, from the artisanal influences to the shadowing of ferns in the breeze on wallcoverings.” Claire Greenfield, Lead Designer, Harlequin.

The dramatic elements of nature have been translated with ease in the REFLECT collection, bringing designs to the fore with mineral tones, luxurious finishes and incomparable textures for the wall. Embossed vinyls meet gravure and rotary printing techniques in the collection of wallcoverings.

A truly organic design, Onburu, meaning ombre in Japanese, is a panel or mural type wallcovering. Painted

One of these embossed vinyl designs is the Lacuna Stripe, a wide width wallcovering that reveals a different take on a classic animal print, with a subtle, naturally forming stripe running vertical to the leopard spot design.

Skiva is another embossed vinyl in a wide width, which uses ombre tones to create a dimensional quality to this wallcovering. Inspired by the structured weave of rattan furniture, Skiva uses light and shadow to create impact in useable tones. Such as Linen, Black Earth, Bamboo and Grounded.

Textures and tones reflect artistic influences, which the colour palette draws out in ombre tones and use of light and shade with aplomb. Wide widths and mural panels display organic beauty in earth-inspired colourways. A graphic contour design moves in slow motion across Harlequin’s Formation wallcovering, reflecting a ripple as if looking at the amazon from

V & A DECORATIVE PAPERS II BY

1838 Wallcoverings

1838 Wallcoverings announces the launch of its second collaboration with the V&A (Victoria and Albert Museum) with a new collection of 9 wallpapers.

At the core of 1838 Wallcoverings is the celebration of design and craftsmanship. A family-owned business, it is led by brother and sister team James and Abigail Watson, whose family has over 4 generations of wallpaper printing experience. All 1838 luxury wallpapers are printed at the family factory in Lancashire, where they are masters of wallpaper printing techniques: from the heritage technique of surface printing for a beautiful handpainted effect, to the latest digitally printed looks. As before, they have worked closely with the V&A museum’s licensing team to select items from the archive, and they have found some stunning archive patterns dating as far back as the 1700s, each with its own intriguing narrative to tell. Inspired by woodblock prints, watercolour sketches, textile treasures and upholstery fabrics that draw on a multitude of artistic influences, each has been adapted by 1838 Wallcoverings to create wallpaper designs that both honour the distinguished history of the archive object and provide enduring new contemporary colourways, which are relevant for the interiors of today. The V&A (Victoria and Albert Museum, London) is the world’s leading museum of art, design and performance with collections unrivalled in their scope and diversity.

arden Pineapple G

Speaking of the collaboration, Amelia Calver, V&A Brand Licensing Research and Development Manager said, ‘We are thrilled to present the second Decorative Papers collection, a veritable treasure trove of styles drawn from the V&A’s illustrious archives. From the grandeur of ‘Pineapple’ to the intricacy of ‘Calico Shell’ and the opulence of Walter Crane’s classic designs, 1838 Wallcoverings’ range is a true celebration of craftsmanship, sophistication and artistry.’ Pineapple Garden: Taking its archive inspiration from the Huguenot master weaver and designer James Leman, reinterpreted for wallpaper by 1838, by combining two traditional techniques: Surface and Flexo printing. Surface printing provides a wonderfully thick ink coverage and hand-painted appearance, and Flexo is ideal for fine detailed effects – perfectly combined in this glorious wallpaper pattern. Flower Meadow: Walter Crane’s beautiful Arts and Crafts’ woodblock design from 1904.

Date Palm mural

Rhododendron

Lovers of the English countryside will know the welcome sight of the spectacular arrival of the first Rhododendrons in Spring. Celebrated here in this flamboyant design – which comes in 3 colourways.

Elijah Walton was a very talented English Victorian painter and this remarkable study of date palm trees conveys an almost dream-like, mirage landscape from his travels.

Rhododendron: This wonderfully abundant pattern is based on a wallcovering that was probably made in England during the 1920s, a time of great growth for the country’s wallpaper industry. A transitional piece, it borrows elements from the Arts and Crafts Movement’s preference for blending botanical studies into home furnishings as well as the opulent patterns of the Art Deco era.

1838 Wallcoverings’ Managing Director James Watson says of the collection: ‘It’s fantastic to be launching a second collection with the V&A; it is a privilege to be able to delve back into the archive and have access to these historic designs, recreating them in our family factory. By adapting and recolouring the archive artworks we’ve created a collection that feels contemporary and joyous, it really is a celebration of artistry, craft and design.’

Archive inspiration: Date grove near Alexandria, Elijah Walton (1832–80), watercolour, Egypt, 1860–70.

‘Gertrude’ is a brand new wallpaper design taken from a crewelwork embroidered bed hanging by Abigail Pett, which she embroidered between 1680-1700 and is now housed at the Victoria and Albert Museum. The bed hanging was first redrawn in the late 19th century by Gertrude Jekyll who was sent by George Percival Baker to Bosworth Hall near Nuneaton as part of the renovation of the Hall and the document is now held in their archive providing vivid inspiration for this wonderful, whimsical design.

This was due to the Great Exhibition of 1851, where global industry came together to show its very exotic wares, combined with the industrial age allowing travel and a great many explorers to conquer unknown territories. Journey to China

Spring Festival Birds Prosperity

Paying homage to China The Coordonné team immersed themselves in the history of China and its dynasties, searching for inspiration that could transport them to bucolic bird scenes, and flowering Spring landscapes, with hidden figures amongst the almond trees and pagodas. Creating a collection of patterns with the romantic aura of travel to the Far East. The Forbidden City collection is a tribute to the great beauty of what continues to be the physical and spiritual heart of Chinese civilization today. It also pays homage to the sophistication of the Ming and Qing dynasties. Stunning imperial colours The Chinese imperial world cannot be understood without the existence of powerful ochres, passionate reds, solemn blacks, reassuring emeralds or jade greens, and purplish blues. It is a popular colour palette that never goes out of style. Wallpapers with infinite textures In its original designs, Coordonné stands out for its

infinite textures and overlapping hand-drawn lines which create an unsurpassed artistic dimension. You will be unable to resist the temptation to touch the wallpaper, to check whether it is embossed or not. These wall coverings have such a fresh, authentic and unique appearance. The murals and wallpapers illustrate their patterns with a brush, sponge or even wooden blocks, featuring irregular patches of bright oil paint or subtle watercolours, generating a true artistic expression in its compositions. Using these wallcoverings is the closest thing to hiring an artist to paint the walls of your home in such a grand format. These designs are large-scale works that acquire the value of collector’s pieces. The pictorial mastery is especially evident with the murals in this collection. As seen here with the simple understated elegance of the floral explosion of Spring Festival, created in a watercolour on aged canvas panels effect mural. wallpaperdirect.com

25

In their second launch this year, Coordonné bring us another collection from Coqui Ybarra - Palacio de Cristal which portrays the extravagance of the iron and glass pavilions of the 19th century. Designs which show the original artwork and brush stokes by Coqui.

Designs of plants that climb heavenward within romantic greenhouses. Wild thistles that grow with gusto and spontaneity among the flower beds of these elegant modernist pavilions. Geometric shapes that are inspired by the rail forgings where Italian jasmines climb.

Invernadero

There is no plan B With their 45 years’ experience in the interior design sector, their aim is to make Coordonné 100% sustainable and socially responsible, which is a challenge that keeps them motivated for 2024. It is not only about ensuring that the final product leaves the smallest environmental footprint, but there is also a commitment to creating well-being that pushes the brand to grow as a friendly and empathetic company in its daily life. Workers, suppliers and clients all working in the same direction, towards taking care of both the environment and ourselves. LITTLE GREENE

This season Little Greene introduced their fourth instalment of their National Trust Papers. Working in collaboration with Europe’s largest conservation charity, each design has been created from original patterns found at several of the National Trust’s historic houses, with the addition of one design, the ever popular Great Ormond Street, that has been recoloured and revived from the Little Greene archive. The source material for this collection represents over 250 years of British decoration, whilst the judicious use of colour brings a contemporary nuance and breathes new life into these historic designs. Employing a spectrum of printing methods, from traditional surface printing to cutting-edge digital machines, the collection comprises an array of exotic birds, stylised florals and scrolling trails alongside ditsy print florals and a large-scale tropical design. Little Greene’s Creative Director, Ruth Mottershead, comments: ‘Working with the National Trust to uncover and revive these incredible historic designs is a real honour for us all at Little Greene. Designs within this collection date back to 1770, yet still endure, feeling fresh and relevant today. Showcasing these historic patterns in their new colourways in contemporary spaces and modern design scheme has reinvigorated them, ensuring they can be enjoyed for years to come.’ There are seven new designs in this collection and one of our favourites is the Burges Butterfly, a small scale floral pattern, which has a similar heritage to their popular Burges Snail design. The collection also includes some more delightful smaller scale patterns: Spring Flowers and Ditsy Block in a range of colourways. Becky Stanford, Head of Brand Licensing for the National Trust: ‘Working with Little Greene continues to delight. The way they bring the prints and patterns from the places in our care, to life for the modern home, is a fabulous showcase for the timeless designs we look after. In one collection they’re able to shine a light on a wide range of designs and styles, drawing out how nature has always been a source of inspiration; a reminder of how precious it is, now more than ever. As well as bringing joy to homeowners, the income from these collections allows us to continue to look after these inspirational places for everyone to enjoy, and we remain very grateful for all their support.’

Stripes

Well to be honest, it is not really ‘new’ more a classic for all seasons and we are seeing an increased demand. If you are looking for a simple, sophisticated look which doesn’t look like you have ‘tried’ too hard – then stripes

COLL ABORATES WITH US DESIGNER

CLARKE & CLARKE

Kisumu

With a shared love for the power of pattern and the modern inspiration that nature provides us, the Clarke & Clarke X Breegan Jane collaboration is a design force with a globally inspired outlook. Breegan Jane, interior designer, author and philanthropist, lends her design eye for enhanced naturalistic detail to this exciting, dynamic collection, designed with Clarke & Clarke.

Palmyra

Breegan’s global style sensibilities, combined with her love of captivating and visually intoxicating interior styles called out to Clarke & Clarke as the perfect design collaboration. On the instant connection and working with Clarke & Clarke, Breegan said, “The collaboration felt extremely synergistic… I loved being able to bring a fresh, youthful perspective on luxury as a California native with an affinity for travel.” Worldly inspiration Deeply inspired by her worldly travels and philanthropic work, Breegan’s eye for detail captures the dramatic side of nature in this collection. African patterning and nature’s references blend with a taste of the tropical, lifting designs to become contemporary classics. Their shared affinity with our natural world nurtured brand new designs, created exclusively with Breegan Jane. Both design and colour palette came together in an organic blending of talents that explore the depths of designs in rich and enticing colourways, enhancing patterns and throwing a new perspective on wallpaper and fabric designs. Breegan adds “Nature-inspired prints have a way of appealing to us because of the undeniable beauty of the outdoors. There’s a connection we all share with nature that reminds us of something so much greater than ourselves.” Designs that mirror the world’s landscape An image of tranquillity, Nairobi is a very special, widewidth panel wallpaper of exceptional quality, depicting an artistic interpretation of the African horizon. Softly blending colours, expressive brushstrokes and a dramatic sense of scale all combine in this hand painted, digitally produced design in a Sunset colourway.

Pokot

“This collection breathes the captivating sights, sounds and scenes from my favourite places on earth. Each time I visit Kenya, even from a standpoint of philanthropy, I’m completely overtaken by the lush, picturesque landscape. With every vacation I take to Ibiza I’m hypnotised by the vibrant nightlife and tranquil waters that redefine opulence and carefree living for me. LA’s iconic palm trees and understated elegance throughout the city are the roots of ‘home’ for me as a southern California native. By incorporating elements from these locations that I frequent, I hope to instil hints of global beauty, comfort and opulence into homes and interior spaces around the world.” – Breegan Jane. For us one of the instant standout designs from the new collection is the Pokot animal print, with its strong panelled effect. A leopard spot, layered onto a feathered design on a tonal ground, there is much to love about Pokot. A gritty, almost sandy textured paper, Pokot embraces the essence of the African Savannah, striking, cultural and richly enchanting. Its vibrancy of design demands attention. A complementary cut velvet fabric in the same design and name sits alongside to up the drama further. Brand McKenzie’s top trends

Animal Islands

Do you feel your wallpaper should take you away from the monotony of the everyday? Then you’re right on trend for 2024, which is all about wallpapers that tell a story and draw you in. Brand McKenzie’s Tropical Daze collection is an excellent example, offering a window to a world where mythical creatures rub shoulders with exotic animals and birds. Can you spot the monkey

with the telescope in the Animal Islands design (hint: he’s riding an elephant!), or the majestic zebra unicorn preparing to take flight? The stories that the wallpapers of 2024 will tell are wonderfully varied, but there are two trends that particularly stand out.

wallpaperdirect.com

45

TREND 1: ART DECO Art Deco design is widely celebrated for its geometric shapes, vibrant and luxurious colours, as well as its use of lavish materials. These striking characteristics have made it a beloved and enduring style choice for over a century. With this in mind, we introduce Downtown Deco, a magnificent addition to Brand McKenzie’s Heart Deco collection. Meticulously hand-drawn and hand-painted, effortlessly capturing the essence of Art Deco buildings with their intricate embellishments and stylised patterns. Another design with the Art Deco vibe is Charleston Tower. Offering a captivating sneak peek into the vibrant world of a 1920s apartment block, this wallpaper depicts the daily comings and goings of the inhabitants. From glamorous ladies indulging in luxurious baths and carefully applying makeup to couples gracefully dancing or sharing a romantic dinner, the Charleston Tower Wallpaper encapsulates the essence of the Art Deco age. Butterfly Effect

TREND 2: BE BOLD! This is our favourite current trend and one, we think Brand McKenzie have totally embraced in all interpretations. We’ve noticed that people are looking to make more impact with their walls and, as a result, popular wallpaper designs are becoming bolder and more daring for example both Butterfly Effect and Balancing Act from their Carnival Fever collection are a perfect example of two facets of this trend, with their vibrant colours and quirky charm (shown in the Nightfall on the previous page). Whose hand-drawn and hand-painted wallpaper showcases adventurous performers delicately balancing on a maze of branches, leopards dressed to impress in colourful feather headpieces and elephants riding penny farthings, to name a few. But if you are looking to make a subtle statement? Then perhaps opt for the powdery blue or the soft pink background both of which are spot-on with the muted maximalism trend. Many of the designs from Brand McKenzie give you the option to go full on with colour intensity or to draw back a little and make a more subtle statement with softer background colours, but whichever you chose, the detail in their designs is truly wonderful. All Brand McKenzie designs and colourways are available on wallpaperdirect.com

Play it bold!

Decorating a child’s bedroom perhaps offers the

opportunity to be a little more creative than for other rooms in the home and in 2024 we are much more likely

to be bold with colour for the kids! We are noticing a real trend for using non-traditional kids’ wallpapers, as shown in the gorgeous bedroom on the left. This design choice

adds unique personality and style whilst adding longevity to the decoration as the wallpaper cannot be ‘outgrown’.

ASK

OUR INHOUSE DECORATING EXPERT

Are metallic wallpapers difficult to use? No, so long as you take care of them. Metallic wallpapers these days are usually non-woven (also described as paste the wall) which means they are perfect for the home decorator, because there is no need to allow them to stretch. You just apply the paste to the wall and hang the wallcovering straight up on the wall; quick, easy with minimum fuss.

1. 2. 3. 4.

he wall is dry and clean with no visible flaws or marks T as these may be visible through your wallcovering. e would always recommend that you use a W lining paper first and allow this to dry thoroughly before applying your metallic wallpaper. pply a premium ready mixed adhesive like A Albany Super Smooth adhesive to the wall.

Don’t get adhesive on the decorative surface (front)

of the wallpaper – if you do, remove it immediately with a soft, damp cloth.

U se a soft decorator’s brush not a hard edge to smooth down the paper, working from the centre to the edges gently, to remove air bubbles. ith care and patience and keeping all surfaces W (walls, ceilings, tables) clean there is no reason you should not get a stunning final effect.

Wiltshire Meadow WALLPAPER DESIGNED BY CLARISSA HULSE

Woodland Fern

Artist Clarissa Hulse’s latest luxury wallpaper collection is an invitation to wander into a magical Wiltshire Meadow - where wildflowers and seedheads glow against luminous, open skies. This collection is the culmination of over twenty years spent hand-printing botanical designs and is

a celebration of the timeless beauty of the natural world. Every leaf, stem, bud and flower was collected by Clarissa in the wilds of Wiltshire, and carefully photographed back in her London studio. Clarissa’s secret is to then interfere as little as possible with nature’s own compositions, in order to capture the effortless elegance of organic patterns.

Meadow Grass

Gypsophila

Renowned for her evocative use of colour, the colour palettes in this collection have been meticulously selected by Clarissa to create more than just a colour scheme. The ombre hues capture an atmosphere, which will lift and transform any room. “Now more than ever, we’re starting to realise the importance of nature and how precious every tree and plant is. My aim with this collection is to share my eternal wonderment at nature, and to bring some of that beauty and feeling into your home. I hope it brings you joy too.”
