Class of 2020 staff members reflect over past four years

Each year, each senior on the Image staff writes a column that exemplifies why their time at Lafayette was impactful for them. This is seen as a rite of passage for staff members who make it to the end, as it is an important and personal writing to each individual. It is the last thing they get to write as an Image staff member and student at Lafayette. It is a way of ending this chapter of our lives. In these columns, you will see perspectives of many different types of people, who lived completely different lives outside of the newsroom. These columns reflect the diversity of the staff, and show how being apart of this community and many other communities impacted their life for the better.

Do you remember what those blinding neon green Freshman Fish Dance shirts said? “2020. We see our futures clearly.” It seemed like the perfect cliché. We would certainly spend four full years at LHS. We would certainly be preparing to graduate in 2020. That was a lie. We certainly did not see our futures clearly. Four years ago, we had no idea how much loss we’d experience. We didn’t know flood days or FLEX would become a thing, and we had zero clue that a microbe would hijack our senior year. But four years ago, we also had no idea how many amazing things we’d experience. We didn’t know about the incredible friendships we’d form, the academic or athletic achievements we’d accomplish or the passions we’d develop. We did not see our futures clearly; so many unexpected things occurred, but I’m glad it happened that way. Over these four years, I’ve learned how

important it is to have people to lean on. I’ve learned who those people are, and they’re not the same people I would’ve expected four years ago. I’ve learned how much stronger and more resilient I’ve become whether it was from classes, basketball or pandemics. I’ve learned how much the majority of the class actually cares about each other. I’ve seen classmates genuinely enjoy supporting each other while they succeed in sports, theater, music or academics. Through everything, I truly hope you’ve also found your people, become more resilient and appreciated everyone from your best friends to your freshman year locker buddy. So it doesn’t really matter that we can’t see our futures clearly. We should embrace the fact that we don’t have 2020 vision. It’s exciting that way. Control what you can and learn from everything that happens, even if that be that neon shirts are not where it’s at.

Like many of my peers this year, I was ready for this year to be over. I was ready to close this chapter of my life that seemed like it would never end. I spent a lot of time focusing on where I would be going next year and being pessimistic rather than soaking in the short amount of time I had in this period of my life. Don’t get me wrong, I took part in every major event in the year, but I took for granted all of the small gifts each and every day was in this school. Although those big moments like Homecoming and Friday night football games are a big deal, I am realizing, now that my time is cut short, that all the personal connections I made throughout my four years here, whether it was a teacher, a coach or a classmate were too. I was lucky enough to have multiple teachers in this school who truly cared about me and pushed me to be better at whatever I wanted to do. No school dance

could ever overshadow the love I felt from these people. I hope each and every person at Lafayette has had the opportunity to make close knit connections with someone at the school, whether that is a teacher or a friend, because I cannot fathom the idea of high school without the closeness and acceptance I received from those around me. I was lucky enough to be involved in many activities and classes that provided me the opportunity to do so. I cannot imagine who I would have been at the end of these four years without the influence of those around me. I regret not making the most of the time I had this year with each and every person that I will not have access to for the rest of my life. I wish nothing more than to have had more time with these people in my life. Of course, I wish it didn’t take a pandemic for me to see that.

My first day of high school was filled with terror, confusion and blindingly yellow hallways. Only three months prior I had walked out the doors of my middle school for the last time, arms linked with my four classmates. Yes, you heard me, four. Leaving such a small and tight-knit community terrified me. While I knew the day I would transition into a public school of nearly 2,000 students was coming, it still came as a curve ball. My passing periods were spent frantically trying to find my next class, lunchtime was spent aimlessly wandering the commons and classes were spent awkwardly starting conversation with people. Those first several weeks were anything but comfortable. But they were some of the most influential weeks of my high school career. They pushed me to talk to new people and try things I would have never considered.

If it wasn’t for those first couple weeks, I would have never joined water polo, where I found a team and a leadership opportunity. I would have never joined student publications, which gave me a family, and an opportunity to do what I love. The growth that came from those first couple weeks and throughout the last four years far outweighs my initial frustration. As I reflect on the past several years, I also look forward. Next year, I think many of us will be in a similar position that I was in, frantically trying to get a firm grasp on our next stage of life. I can guarantee we will experience discomfort. But that is how we grow and learn. It is what will make looking back rewarding. Take hope in the fact that your discomfort is a part of a much bigger journey. While I can’t say I will miss those first few weeks, I can say I will miss the people and experiences that helped me grow

They weren’t kidding when they said these four years would fly by. But in case you blinked, I probably have a photo to fill you in. Our short time at Lafayette can be measured by the hours we spent in class, by the grades we earned or by the friendships we’ve made. But the measurement that represents my time best is the 12 out of 12 pep assemblies I’ve witnessed through a camera. The assemblies themselves aren’t necessarily what define my time here, though. For the past four years, I’ve documented assemblies and, more importantly, everything in between. From the court to the stage, I’ve witnessed my classmates pour their hearts and souls into their crafts. If it weren’t for being behind the camera, I may have never taken this opportunity. To the athletes, musicians, theater kids and everyone else, thank you for not only

giving me something to capture, but for making Lafayette the experience it’s been. Your dedication was truly inspiring to watch. And to all the spectators, I hope you, too, were inspired. I hope you took the opportunity to die laughing at an improv show or to lose your voice cheering from the student section. These events shaped our time in high school, and I promise our classmates appreciated our support. As we part our ways, I hope you never stop supporting others. Read your college newspaper, support an under-appreciated sports team or exchange a smile with a stranger. And just like that, our time together is over. As I have unknowingly captured my last of thousands of frames of the Class of 2020, I hope our unfortunate ending reminds us of the countless memories we’ve made together and the power of unconditional support for one other.

Unlike the majority of the class graduating with me, I did not start off my high school era attending Lafayette. I actually transferred here the summer before my sophomore year began. When I arrived here, I was afraid to stand out and be a part of the clubs I had been previously a part of at my old high school. I did not want people to look at me and assume things just because of the activities I wanted to be involved in. So, I shied away from the classes and clubs that interested me. It took me a while to realize that life was boring without them, and that is something that I was kind of ashamed of until I decided to start doing what made me happy. The second I decided to go after the things that made me happy, like a debate club, journalism classes and social studies

electives, I found people who shared the same values I did. They were so happy with what they did, and that impacted me. I am a better person now because I reached out and found my place alongside them. Had I not done that, I would have missed out on so many people and things, big and little, that have changed the way I view the world. It is important to find your place, whether that is in a social studies class listening to a lecture about the brain, a debate tournament passionately speaking or in the journalism room designing pages. Doing what makes you happy with the people who make you happy matters more than any kind of social standing. If I had to do it all over again, I would not change or trade in the memories and connections I have made for anything in the world.

“What a life we lead.” If you have spent a day with me, you have heard this cheesy phrase I say. Yes, I know it’s something a nostalgic 50-year-old Midwestern dad would say, but I think saying it has changed how I live my life. The sentence is simple, but it speaks to more than just a moment. It speaks to what I am doing, who I am with, the history that has gotten us to this moment. It always makes me think of more than just this exact moment and brings a layer of gratitude to moments that we usually aren’t grateful for. It helps me be grateful for awkward pauses in conversations, difficult runs with the team and even essays that keep us up late. Of course, so much in our lives has been exhausting and difficult and heart breaking. So, when we realize how amazing sitting

with our friends at a lunch table is, or how fun it is to say hey to people it makes the difficult days easier. For example, in newspaper it was easy to buckle down and get the work done for deadlines, but if I hadn’t stopped and appreciated holding a magazine we made, or looked at my team with gratitude during one of the work nights then I wouldn’t love it as much as I do. Moments that could’ve been stressful became unforgettable with just a little dash of gratitude. I will always look back with love for my time on staff. We’ve lost a lot of our senior year, moments that we would have appreciated, but if anything this situation has taught us to have a greater love for the small things that we lost. I hope that once our life goes back to normal, every once and awhile we are able to say, “what a life we lead.”

Class of 2020, as I pen my final missive to you, I cannot help but reflect on the unparalleled experience we have shared. Together, we witnessed several once-in-alifetime events: a solar eclipse, a president impeached, a viral pandemic. For us, high school was truly unforgettable. As the late Robert F. Kennedy once said, “There is a Chinese curse which says ‘May he live in interesting times.’” While the origin he provides is almost certainly apocryphal, his message holds merit at its core: experiencing history, while it may sound exciting, means witnessing times of turbulence and trauma. He was unfortunate enough to live in “interesting times,” and now, over fifty years later, we grapple with similar strife. And yet, day after day, we’ve carried on, resuming life as normal (or some semblance of it) without stopping for retrospection. We’ve maintained our collective sanity by maintaining our

collective nature—reaching out to those who needed it most. The Class of 2020 has pulled off a miraculous feat amid incredible adversity: we have uplifted each other and helped each other succeed. In spite of everything, we’ve Zoomed our way to the finish line. We persevered like no other class before us, and now we’re here, on the cusp of boundless opportunity. At the end of the journey, we anticipated a joyous celebration, one that now looks unlikely, at least in the traditional sense. Though the prospects of holding an official graduation ceremony seem doubtful, consider these your parting words: We are the Class of 2020. We can accomplish anything we will ourselves to. When others have fallen down, we’ve helped them get up. Together, we have struggled and we have strived. And together, we will lead the world of tomorrow.

When I first moved here in 1st grade, I never knew that this place would give me my best friends. Sitting in that 1st grade class with my pigtails and goldfish, I met my first friend Kayla Hoover. We were the best of friends, and just like that in August we will be exactly 1,502 miles away from each other. Everyone always said that high school goes by so fast, but we never believed them. From Chesterfield Elementary to Rockwood Valley Middle School to Lafayette High School, I have become friends with the best people. I know it’s cheesy but Winnie the Pooh once said, “How lucky am I to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard”. Not being able to finish the last two months of our senior year is difficult because those are the last memories we are going to have with the people we have

been going to school with for the past 12 years. But the class of 2020 is special because we have this quarantine story that no one else has, and we will come out of it together. It isn’t ideal by any means, but it’s definitely special to us. Also, Lafayette Cheer made such a big impact on me and it allowed me to not only meet such amazing girls and cheer on my friends, but it gave me incredible role models. Coach Levine, Coach Green, Coach Trankle, Coach Knox, and Coach Ehrhardt were all great coaches. Because of these women I have decided to continue my cheerleading career at Southeast Missouri State University. Thank you to everyone, friends and teachers, who have been a part of my high school story. You have all kept it interesting and memorable.

I remember my freshman year hearing all of the seniors on my dance team talk about how high school goes by so fast and to cherish your time. I remember laughing along and agreeing nonchalantly. Now that my time as a senior has come to an end, I can truly say that they were right. I remember everyday of my time at Lafayette, as the days were long but the years were short. One of my favorite memories throughout my four years has to be the eclipse beginning of my sophomore year. When the entire school met on the football field, and we all sat waiting for the moon to block the sun. I’ll never forget everyone’s reactions when the sky went dark for minutes. I think that moment is a good representation of the Class of 2020’s time

at Lafayette. Every year we had something monumental and memorable that helped make the year more interesting. My senior year was nothing but special, and I can give some thanks to that to the newspaper staff and student publications. I joined staff my first semester senior year, and frankly, had no idea what I was doing. But, thanks to everyone on staff, I was welcomed and able to fit in so quickly. I never thought I would end my senior year two months early and in quarantine. But the circumstances of this year, and our time at Lafayette, match how special the class of 2020 is. It only makes sense that a class so special, and a class so strong, would end so chaotically. Thank you to the Class of 2020 for the time of my life, and thank you to Lafayette for the best four years.

I came to LHS as a dual enrolled student just looking to have a firmer education, and now I’m leaving with amazing friends, hundreds of pictures of long nights with my friends, facetimes during corona I’ll never forget, and so much more. Lauren Gebel: Lacrosse games and Homecoming Week Ethan Gebhardt: Football games, there is no better energy. Claire Geurkink: The amazing teachers that I connected with throughout the four years. Sarah Godefroid: Homecoming Spirit Week. So many people get involved and it’s the only time of year the school truly comes together on such a large scale to show spirit. Blake Gordon: Online school Katie Greenstein: Watching Law and Order with Landow in AP Lang. Violet Hainz: FNL and HoCo Week. And those two combined hit different. It’s like our school came together for one week and felt actually connected. Zuko Hajrovic: Probably meeting a few people that I’ve managed to talk to. Claire Holestine: The amazing friends I’ve made and my teachers. Kayla Hoover: Prom Allison Horstmann: Having classes with my relatives. Owen Hueckel: Sports. I played all four years of football and lacrosse. One of the best things was coming to the first day of practices freshman year and meeting all new athletes that will soon become my friends for the next four years. I will miss the coaching staff, despite them

making the team run whenever we did something wrong. But in the end of my senior year all these friends I played with for so long are now no longer friends, they are my brothers. Dylan Hunter: Football games Jordan Hunter: In freshman year, my friend and I would sit next to his locker in the morning and wait for the first bell to ring. Eventually, another person joined us. As we got more familiar with the school, and gained more friends, more people joined us. The best times and some of the hardest were shared here. Every year, a few more people were added, some people left, but the ones who stayed became my best friends. Eventually I started coming to school later (mostly because I am terrible at waking up in time) and didn’t usually have time to sit and talk, but I will not miss anything more than the time we had there. Carissa Lieberman: There were highs and lows, but the thing I will miss the most is my connections with my friends and teachers.
