With Superintendent Eric Knost’s retirement, we will be the last graduating class to get a selfie with him. That deserves bragging rights. Lafayette has been named best school in Missouri by US News and World Report. The Class of 2019 is probably half of the reason. Being able to wear a hat to school has been quite the privilege on our bad hair days. If Assistant Principal Tim Jones isn’t jacked after all of those push ups, we’ll be massively disappointed. Where else can you get a killer panini for your school lunch? Only at Lafayette, baby! Even if it was never actually charged, a Chromebook was, theoretically, a pretty cool thing to have.

Couples that kiss in the hallways are not to be missed. Not that making out in public won’t be commonplace on a college campus, but hopefully not around every hallway corner. Hopefully. We’re still convinced the school Wi-Fi router was actually just a microwave with an antennae on top. The “Fish Dance” was arguably the most awkward way to be welcomed to high school. Never again do any of us have to do the indoor mile. Don’t lie, we know you took the elevator. I know you’re expecting one of these to be about homework, but that’s not going away in college. Sorry to break it to you. A gripe to us for complaining every issue. School isn’t too bad, I guess.

Editor’s Note: The senior issue is a special edition of the Image Magazine produced by and for the graduating class. It contains information seniors provided for inclusion via survey. Information about post-graduation plans also provided by the Guidance Office.

University of Kansas Strategic Communication and Graphic Design Throughout the entire process of choosing and getting into a college, I felt like I was behind. Everyone else around me seemed to be making progress… or the contrary. That one guy who got accepted into his dream school and has to pay virtually nothing in terms of tuition and the girl who is losing her ever-loving mind because she got wait-listed at a school she had no doubt as to whether they would accept her; both of these people loomed in the back of my head as I, as most seniors did, went through the stress and anxiety of college admissions. Pressure was lifted off my chest when I made my decision. It seemed that nothing was questionable in my life, everything was certain. But just for a moment. Now that I was in, I had to choose an area of study, a choice that would affect my career path. No big deal. The weight this choice bares is one that I’m still experiencing, and one that I don’t expect to be relieved from until I’m well into my college education. As of now, a career in advertising and design is what I wish to pursue. My first semester of school could drastically change my plans. Or it could reassure me of my current choice. That’s all in the future, so I guess I’ll just have to wait to find out. Realizing that my peers are dealing with the same uncertainty has put me at ease. Some of us are ahead of the game, some behind. Where I attempt to envision myself now may be completely far-fetched compared to what my life actually has in store for me. And frankly, I’m pretty okay with that.

Saint Louis University Biochemistry As a second semester senior, I can definitely attest to the reality of senioritis. There are far too many nights when my backpack doesn’t even leave my car. I look back to how motivated and how determined I was during sophomore and junior year and laugh. So I definitely get it, when you don’t want to go to those last few club meetings of the year, or if you can’t get yourself to go to those last few games. But that doesn’t mean that our entire time in high school was just to build up a resume . Over spring break, I caught up with a friend who graduated a few years ago. Obviously, I asked how college was going. “Oh, it’s great. You don’t have to do any of the dumb clubs or activities for a resume so I find it much more enjoyable than high school,” he said with a laugh. I was appalled. This kid, who had been the epitome of involvement, academics and achievement in high school, had only done it all for show? Afterwards I began to think of everything that I had done in high school, wondering what my real reasons for doing anything were. I’m sure if that was my sole purpose in high school, my time here would be miserable. I sincerely hope that each and every one of you did something in high school that was just for yourself, and not for a college resume or for anyone else— whether it be through school or otherwise. If not, I’m so sorry that you didn’t have a single activity that you thoroughly enjoyed participating in and being a part of. I hope that in college and in your careers, you all find something that you love to do, regardless of what others have to say. If I had to do it all over again—even without the worry of impressing colleges— there isn’t much I’d do differently.

University of Missouri Columbia Secondary Education In school, we are taught to find answers. From “what is x?” in math to “what does the author mean?” in language arts, we answer questions. Frankly, I often struggled in my classes, but eventually, with help, I was always able to find answers at the end. And I thought this was the role of school. We are asked a question and find answers in the boundary of a classroom. However, school turned out to be more than a place where I learned to answer just my “academic” questions. For example, “Can you afford to pay?” was a question that I was actually asked at Walgreens and surprisingly found an answer at school. During that time, I had bronchitis for over a month and went to Walgreens Urgent Care to get a treatment. But, when the receptionist asked me this question after I told her that I only had $20 in my hand, I had to walk away because I realized I couldn’t afford it. However, when I went to school and reached out to Lori Zang and Cindy Laudel, they helped me to get Medicaid and get proper treatments. I don’t think I could’ve ever figured out to answer “Can you afford to pay?” on my own. There are similar questions that I found answers in school. For instance, “What should I do if I can’t handle the pressure on me and I miss my parents who are living thousands of miles away from me?” Again, all of my teachers, counselors, and friends helped me answer the question. Without them, I would have been still lost. I am so grateful that I went to Lafayette and for all the people I knew here. I am so grateful for all of you who are reading the paper right now too, because I was able to graduate with you.

Kansas City Art Institute Printmaking When I got sick, I didn’t know how much my life would change. There’s no conversation about that foggy space between common colds and terminal cancers, where the illness won’t go away but won’t kill you, so none of us know what “chronic illness” means until we’re thrown into being sick forever. For most of my life, it had never crossed my mind that I might wake up sick one day and never get better. But that’s exactly what happened. Getting told you have an autoimmune disease is scary because there is no cure. Doctors switch from finding a treatment to managing symptoms, because that is all they can do to keep you alive. Chronic illness can be a terrifying space at first. There is a period of grieving that looks different for everyone. We have to come to terms with being sick...forever. We have to learn to cope with the idea that the future might not look the way we anticipated, which is not easy to do when you “have your whole life ahead of you.” I’m sick at a time in my life where others might be feeling invincible, independent, studious and adventurous. You think that nothing could ever stop you in this world, but then life isn’t in your control anymore. Accepting my limitations and learning to adapt is a long process, and certainly not without mistakes and challenges. So often we are expected to be positive about our illnesses, but this is always the underlying reality that we are coping with. Relentless optimism may sound good, but true peace comes from looking these realities in the eye and truly accepting them for what they are; the good, the bad and the ugly.

Saint Louis University Health Sciences Throughout all of high school, procrastination has been relevant from the start. Instead of doing homework after getting home and eating dinner, my mind decided to have me plop on the couch and watch television for hours. Occasionally, if you insert a nap during the much needed break, it allows for optimal energy to continue to not do anything throughout the night. The day concludes with my backpack in the opposite corner of my room, never opened, while I lay in bed on my phone until going to sleep again. However, this year this type of procrastination has a name, senioritis. Senioritis is a disease. It can hit people like a brick. Every single senior will at some point contract this STD, Senior Temporary Disease, throughout the year. Although the start date of the illness could vary from the first day of school to March, all of us are over high school and ready to leave by the time they come back from spring break. Personally, senioritis started sometime during first semester. Losing motivation in all classes and not making deadlines is something that seniors learn to be professionals at. From start to finish of this column, it consisted of five mental breaks, two snack breaks, and three occasions where I continued to start at the screen with a blank mind. This whole paragraph took me approximately three days and two blocked classes to complete. Yet, it was still turned in at the very last minute. But hey, I am over this column, my brain stopped working and, right now, I am just typing words to try to meet the word count requirement. Although, high school memories and friendships will be missed, the constant busy work that continued to pile up on the desk everyday will not.

University of Missouri Columbia Photojournalism I can’t pinpoint the exact event that made me realize I wanted to study photojournalism, but I know that many of my experiences throughout high school have pushed me towards art. After moving here from Colorado, it was rough adjusting to new perspectives and cultures, but I clung to photography because it allowed me to tell other people’s’ stories. Ultimately, even though I wish I was still in Colorado, the move has made me expect change and have more empathy for those around me.

Webster University Film and Video Production Freshman year, my protein intake was limited. I ran cross country, so I would drink lots of water and eat lots of carbs, but I hardly got any protein. I was pretty scrawny. Since 6th grade I always wanted to be bigger than I was. I didn’t want to feel weak, but thats how I felt. People would remind me all the time about how skinny and boney I was, and it didn’t feel good. Why am I telling you all of this you may ask? Well, that’s where my love for protein began. Sophomore year I started buying protein bars. After cross country season that fall, over the winter I did absolutely no cardio except once or twice, and just tried to lift weights. I gained 20 pounds from the time cross country ended until track started. Not all muscle obviously. Track season came around, and I needed to get back into the groove of running long distances. Then junior year started and I went through my last cross country season going through the motions. I watched my macro-nutrients I was intaking specifically protein non-stop. After cross country ended, I decided to not do cross country or long distance anymore, and got a gym membership. I had different goals, and I didn’t think I was going to accomplish those goals by running miles and miles everyday. I wanted to get bigger. I started going to Club Fitness five days a week and buying protein powder. PROTEIN. I gained ten pounds in only a few months time. Senior year I started being more regimented and organized with workouts and nutrition, and I can say that protein has been there building me as a person throughout my high school career. So really, I am who I am because of protein. I think I have found myself as a person. Thank you protein, you are my hero.

University of Missouri Columbia Journalism and English In the past few months, I’ve been told by more people than I thought I knew, exactly what I should do with my life after graduation. Everyone around me seems to have a difference of opinion on how I should proceed with my life. This was baffling to me considering that for the majority of my time here at Lafayette I didn’t even expect to make it to my senior year. It’s expected that if you’re in high school you must be struggling emotionally, most kids are medicated for something or another nowadays. However, not many people realize how having a mental illness in your formative years can affect you later on in life. I had no sense of time or urgency when it came to planning for my future or applying to colleges. I missed several application deadlines and almost missed several more because in the back of my mind I still couldn’t quite believe that I would be alive to attend. Of all the advice I’ve been given by friends and family on how to be happy: college vs. no college, in-state schools vs. out-of-state schools, medicated vs. unmedicated, the best piece of advice I’ve gotten to date has been simply, that nothing I do matters. Who cares what college you do or don’t go to? Or what decisions you make about majors and dorms? There is almost nothing you can do that can’t be undone in some way. The most important thing to remember is that we are not nearly as important as we believe ourselves to be. As cheesy as it sounds, life is short. Just have fun, and try to do what makes you happy.

What We’ll Miss 20

theimagemagazine

We know you’re ready to graduate, but...

What will seniors Sarah Agolia: There is a group I sit with in the mornings, each one of them has truly changed me. They are always so happy to listen to my successes and the continue to shower me with help and support along my journey. They are tightest group of friends that bring so much joy and fun into my life. They always have tons of stories I enjoy tuning into. They are my world. Shubhi Aluwalia: Having lunch everyday with my friends Heather Akkerman: Cheering at the Lafayette football games Maurya Akula: Probably the Sandwich line Jake Anderson: I think my fondest memories in high school would be making new friends, and having the opportunity to take the classes that LHS offers. Mark Anderson: I will miss coming in and seeing all of my friends and talking to my favorite teachers. Mohammed Arif: I’ll miss all my great teachers and all the people I’ve met Julia Behlmann: The band program. Lafayette has one of the best band programs in Missouri and I will definitely miss being a part of it. I will always be a Lancer Regiment Alumna! Brecken Belgarde: I will miss the student sections and everyone coming together all dressed up to cheer on and support our teams Emily Blackstone: Doing theater with my best friends Madison Boren: I am really going to miss the special Olympics and being apart of the sparkle squad Carson Bray: Sprinting to my car at 3:05 everyday right after school Taylor Bridge: I will miss going to football games and other sporting events with my friends Harrison Brown: Thanks OC for always motivating me to be better and improve as an athlete and student Lauren Buker: Managing Track with all my friends, it was great to make new friends. I’ll miss them a lot. In addition to my close friends of course. Tanner Burt: I will miss the informal relationships that I developed with my teachers Robbie Campbell: I’ll miss all the kind teachers and staff making me feel better everyday also the sports and competition. Winning state my sophomore for volleyball was one of the greatest moments of my life so far and I can’t wait to possibly win another this year! Jayden Carson: The LHS Wrestling Room, I practically lived there Jordan Cizek: Will miss some of the amazing teachers I had during my four years at Lafayette. Michael Countryman: Marching band Claire Crowe: Getting to know great teachers. Anna Lena Curran: I am going to miss the little memories, like my friend groups little meetings at the lockers where we make fun of each other and joke around. I’m going to miss running into my close friends in the hall and making silly hand gestures and comments. Kendall Darnell: I’ll miss all the fun times in choir over the last four years. I’ve met so many great people and I know I’ll miss being part of that community. Damian deUgarte: Fresh new books in the library.... “Is it in yet?” Emily Dobson: I will miss sliding around the halls in my socks before marching band competitions and then seeing the school after when it’s late at night and completely empty other than all the band kids. Jonathan Ebenezer: I’m going to miss the collective struggle we faced every day as LHS students. “Studying” together and asking each other how a test went is something I will actually miss. Jack Emms: Friday Night Lights Rachel Fischer: I will miss the excitement of

Homecoming. All of the games and the spirit week and the homecoming football game and even the dances and the stress of finding the right dress etc... Brenden Jackson: All my friends Jacqueline Jansen: Spirit Weeks. Everyone is just in a happier mood and it’s so much fun to dress up and look forward to a dance on the following Saturday. Leeta Joslyn: One thing I will miss about LHS is feeling loved every day by the people here. I have absolutely taken for granted the friendships I have been given at this school, classmates and teachers alike. Knowing that I have a home and a place every time I walk into school was something that I will be forever thankful for, and something that I will miss dearly. Connor Keefe: I will miss the faculty. Sanjana Kumar: Every day I walk into Ms. Shaffer’s choir class and am greeted with a genuine smile and at least one really bad joke-of-the-day. The smell of coffee in the gifted office combined with the open ears Ms. Hartley and Ms. Podgornik are always lending for rants, advice, comfort, hard truths, and just insightful conversations. Mr. Jaycox’s unapologetic nerdiness and drive to create an environment where we can discuss and debate everything from Harry Potter characters to religion and philosophy in a respectful and profound manner. Karthik Kummarigunta: I miss having AP Lit with all my best friends and also with the best teacher. Hailey Kummer: Mrs. O’Donnell’s class, having classes with my friends, ordering food for lunch. about LHS? the science hallways stopping at each of my previous teachers rooms. Nina LaMar: I’ll miss the improv team for sure. Nick Lembeck: Teachers who joke around like DeBlasi, teachers who make who lessons about joking like Krull, and teachers who make school fun like Jaycox Katie Locke: I will miss all the friends I’ve made at Lafayette the past four years. My fellow classmates have made school enjoyable, and I will miss them not being in my classes the next few years. Jessica Lopez: I will miss being on Yearbook. It has always been a really fun and welcoming class all 3 years I’ve been on it. Being part of yearbook allowed me to go so many different events, be a part of the school community, talk and interview people I’ve never met before, let me use and improve my graphic design skills, and make new friends and memories that I will never forget. Michael Lu: Walking home with all my friends after school Christian Marble: I will miss diving in high school it was such a huge part of my experience I am sad to give it up Mackenzie Marco: I’ll miss seeing all my friends everyday, school dances, and school dress up days. Cassie Meldrum: I’ll definitely miss homecoming week. That week always brought our grade together and we did things as a whole the entire week. Our grade is usually very cliquey but during Homecoming Week it was like we just forgot about that. Abi Mirikitani: I’ll miss that stage and everything that took place on it. Not surprising, I know, but the memories I made and the things I got to do with the people I got to do them with in that theater are irreplaceable. Rishi Ray: I made some really great friends here. DeSean Reese: Being part of all of these sports that helped me build my character.
