Letter from the Editor

The Launch of this magazine has been nothing but exciting in everyway possible. A magazine that started from scratch with a very small team of talented people, has grown into something unexpectedly amazing. I am very grateful to all who have helped make this happen. In this issue, we touch on the subject of makeup tips for timeless beauties. A new section that’s all for, and about, photographers. Also our themed shoots in which the art of makeup, hair and fashion styling was all combined in perfect unison. I am thankful to all the models that put in time and work to make our pictures beautiful. To my wonderful team of editors, Jamie Tran, Stephanie Grace, and now the amazing Carmen Jordan, our Fashion Editor. Without your talents, these shoots would not be what they are. To Titus Perry for assisting in wardrobe on our very last shoot and helping the models strike that pose. Shannon Yauilla, for lending her amazing hair talents for our high fashion shoot. Ramene Ashoori, for shooting our “Fall Into Red” shoot, along with his lovely wife and the talented Rob Mills. For talent agencies such as M3 Modelinge, Tout and Robin Lee Models for allowing us to use their amazing talents. I am grateful to all whose names I did not mention, but you know who you are. Let’s keep on making magic with this magazine. As we continue to grow, we only hope to bring you even better pictures, stories, and all around a great publication. We would love to hear from our readers, please feel free to contact us at editor@lerougemag.com My Thanks and Love,

Eyebrowjunkie Cosmetics

What is Eyebrowjunkie Cosmetics? It’s a new and much awaited cosmetics line coming to South Carolina this Fall. In our interview with the creator and Beauty Editor Jamie Lyn Tran, she lets us know what she wants to accomplish with her new amazing line: “The main load of my artistry business is brides. I work on weddings all throughout the year, among other things. I wanted to be able to offer the brides different packages that will provide them with different options. If a bride just wants to touch up eyes, then there’s a package for that, lips, another for that. I’ve had to do touch ups on brides after I’ve already done their full face. This is simply because they get their makeup done early for photos and the ceremony isn’t until several hours later. The packages I will be providing will allow for the brides to touch up with the same product I used on them on their own. They’ll also have these high quality products months after their wedding.”

With Regards to the quality of the product she said the following: “ When researching for what type of formulas to use with my line, I did research for years! I would compare and contrast the quality of several different formulas. From color, to coverage, I made sure to pick out nothing less than something I would wear on a daily basis myself. I was a MAC Artist for years and know what quality makeup is. I didn’t want to sacrifice quality and didn’t pick the first thing to come and slap my name on it and sell it. I wanted something that I could trust the quality, and know that what I have developed will be loved.” We are Looking forward to this incredible line! For more information on this and Jamie’s work. Take a look at her website www.eyebrowjunkie.com

Healthy Living

The health and fitness world has definitely made its mark on society with the constant media attention on the obesity trend in the United States. The 2000’s are proving to be trendsetting times, yet what trend do we follow? Americans have options to choose low fat, low carb, gluten free, sugar free, fat free, and low calorie. Which one is best for you? As someone who was once considered morbidly obese¸ I understand how you feel. I have been where you are right now. You may not know where to begin, how to start, or if you can even do this. I am going to make this easier for you with my basic tips for diet and exercise. As a mom, wife, fitness instructor, coach, and personal trainer, I am just like you: busy and I need quick tips that work! Your diet is your nutritional plan; this is what you eat on a regular basis. The most important thing to remember is that you want to steer far from the SAD (Standard American Diet). What does this mean to you? Drop the fast food, packaged foods, processed foods, and go back to the basics! You want to follow these few basic guidelines and I guarantee you will look and feel much better. •

Keep a food journal. If you eat it, you write it! If you are writing down all of the foods you eat, it will make it much simpler to keep track of your caloric intake. Finding out how many calories you need each day is simple with any online calorie system—once you know your number, stick to it! Shop on the outer perimeter of the grocery store. Fill your cart with fresh fruits/vegetables, lean proteins, low fat dairy, legumes, and whole grains. You will find the inner aisles are full of sugar laden, carb loaded foods that will not fuel your body to its highest potential. remember, all calories are not created equal. Your body will metabolize the

24 | Le Rouge

calories in an apple much more efficiently than it will a chocolate chip cookie. Eat for the body you want, not the body you have. • •

Ditch the 3 meal a day mentality. Start eating 5-6 mini meals each day every 2-3 hours to keep your metabolism working and hunger at bay. Drink at least half your body weight in water each day. Don’t drink your calories. Swap out soda and juice for water. This will save you hundreds of calories a day, loads of sugar, and unwanted sodium.

Health & Fitness | HEALTHY LIVING •

BLT’s: Bites, Licks, Tastes. Each bite can be as much at 50-100 extra calories! Those add up even on healthy foods. Don’t succumb to the hidden calories by sampling other’s food. If you feel the urge to snack, reach for fruits or vegetables. Do not be afraid of the natural sugars in fruit. Remember bananas do not cause obesity; it’s the double serving sizes of banana pudding that pack the weight on. Use smaller dinner plates. The less food you put in front of you, the less you eat. Portion control is key. The worst trend over the past few decades has been to double the size of a normal portion to super sized. Weigh/measure your food. Digital scales and measuring spoons/cups are inexpensive but give you the most accurate calorie count for your food as opposed to eyeballing a portion. An accurate portion of ½ cup is usually much smaller than our eyes thought. My last tip is my best: plan your meals out. Include a food prep day once a week and preportion all of your food out into single servings so you can grab and go. Your “fast food” just became the alternative to the SAD version of fast food. Exercise. It has become the word so many Americans love to hate, however it is necessary for healthy weight loss. We all know about the importance of exercise not only for weight loss but for living a full, healthy life. Many people have no idea where to begin. Turn on the television, walk into any store, or talk to a friend and you will see more options on how to exercise than you can imagine. Which home workout, gym membership, fitness class, or personal trainer is right for you? Do you know how many days, duration, or intensity you need? This is where I am going to show you some simple steps to adding exercise into your daily routine without feeling overwhelmed. 30-60 minutes of cardio 4-6 days a week is a good ideal balance. Walking, running, sprinting, plyometrics, and biking are all free types of cardio. It doesn’t take a lot of money invested to get your heart rate up; all you need is a pair of tennis shoes. Perform 2-3 sessions of strength training each week. Cardio alone will only give you a smaller version of yourself, while weight training will reshape your body. Weight training also increases your metabolism and develops lean muscle growth. When performing your weight training routine, remember to choose form over speed in every ex-

• •

ercise! Never sacrifice form to get in extra reps. Incorporate 20 minute HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) into your routine a couple days a week. This method will help you burn fat and build muscle in record time. You can do this style anywhere: outside, treadmill, bikes, gyms—this type of workout is short but highly effective for fat loss. Purchase a pedometer that counts your steps, aim for at least 10,000 each day. There is no perfect time to exercise. Pick a time of day that works for you! Early morning, afternoon, evening—just do it! Making time for your daily fitness should become a habit, such as brushing your teeth. It becomes a nonnegotiable part of your life. Find a workout partner. This will help hold you accountable if you know someone is expecting you each day. Having a strong support system will carry you through out your journey. Surround yourself with like minded people. Find a workout you enjoy. You may have to try several until you find one that rreally clicks with your personality, but once you find it, you will never spend another moment unfit. My last tip is my best: Remember, even if you only have time to fit in 15-20 minutes of exercise and you feel like you shouldn’t even bother—you did more than someone who sat on the couch.

These are my basic tips for health and fitness. I have maintained my 100lb weight loss for 2 years and these basic tips keep me going. It can be overwhelming when thinking of stepping into the health and fitness realm, but even small changes can make a big difference. You do not have to start with every tip today. Take it one step at a time, one day at a time, one meal at a time. Stay Fit and Active!

All Things Hair | CURLY HAIR WOES

Curly Hair Woes Are you one of the many that suffer from curly hair stress? Can’t seem to find a hairstylist that really understands how to care, cut and style your locks? In this article we’ll review a few pointers in getting rid of your curly hair woes.

The first thing, for the bearer of curly hair, is to learn about suitable hair care products and styles that will give you beautiful, voluminous hair easily. There are various steps in acheiving this. We have listed the basics for your convenience.

30 | Le Rouge

Shampooing Washing curly hair rinses away dirt and the oil secreted from the pores of the scalp allowing the root of the hair to breathe. Generally, it isn’t necessary to shampoo daily. You must take into account your curl pattern; and base your cleansing routine on this. If you have loose curls, then shampoo 2 - 3 times a week. If you have curly/ tight hair, wash 1 - 2 times per week. If you have really tight/kinky curls, then it is recommended to wash 1 time per week. On days that you do not shampoo rinse hair with warm water and detangle with leave in conditioner. When shampooing, never bunch or scrub your hair. Use your fingertips to rub your scalp and run your fingers downward to clean and detangle.

Conditioning The key to healthy, beautiful, curly hair is moisture. Basic conditioning after shampooing will help detangle curls without causing damage to your curls. Also, it creates a protective barrier against heating tools, sun damage, and product build up. Conditioning tips: With all conditioners, make sure to start two inches from the scalp. Leave 25% of conditioner on ends of your hair for protection and detangling.

Styling Curly hair should never be brushed. On wet hair, a brush may tear or stretch fragile strands. On dry hair it will separate and diffuse the curls, creating frizz, or will create that ‘fro you may not want. Avoid touching curls as they dry because it will disrupt the curl pattern and get the frizzy look. When you think of a Western, the first thing that comes to mind is John Wayne and Clint Eastwood. In their tight jeans, boots and soot on their faces. You think of dirt, desert, cattle and horses. Not in the very least do you think of style and western in the same sentence. At Le Rouge we’re all about thinking outside the box and putting different elements together to see what can come out of it. In the next few pages, you will find what we were able to come up with mixing a little bit of fashion with the “Wild West”. Creative Vision by Stephanie Grace/ Hair Design Editor. Eco Friendly Fashion | GREEN FAIR FASHION SHOW

Green Fair Fashion Show Green is in. A lot of different designers are opting to use recycled, or consigned garments to create their lines. This is not only great for our environment, but also for our pockets. Many fashion stylists incline toward consigning rather than purchasing new garments. This is a wonderful movement for everyone. You too can be fashion forward and help our earth. Below you’ll find information on a South Carolina based “green” boutique, and a fashion show held using eco friendly fashions! Le Rouge’s very own Hair Design Editor, Stephanie Grace, was there! Kristen Armstrong is the owner of the newly opened Ensemble Consignment Boutique which is located on James Island, South Carolina. She recently organized the fashion show for the Charleston edition of the Green Fair. She was asked to participate and organize this show by Lindsey Smith, who was chosen to head up the “style market” section of the Green Fair. The “style market” was set to include several local consignment shops selling their best items at discount prices, as well as a jam packed fashion show displaying several looks that were put together by each “green” store. Kristen’s boutique on James Island includes several aspects that are “ecofriendly” including an old vintage door that makes up the base of her checkout counter, an old coat rack that holds their belts for,

an old bamboo luggage holder that holds shoes and other accessories. Not to mention the entire aspect of consignment itself is to “reuse” clothing items and accessories. Kristen sells the best of the best in used clothing. She chose to open the boutique in May simply because she loves fashion and loves a good deal. You can achieve both at any local consignment store. The fashion show was a great success. All of the outfits shown on the runway were immaculate and “fashion-worthy”. It was a great event and there was nothing but positive feedback for the show. Next years show is set to be bigger and even better, with more consignment shops participating in the event!

This event receives the Le Rouge “Eco Friendly” stamp of approval!

Accessories present a world of opportunity when used correctly. You can use them to look taller, thinner, richer, or whatever - and you don’t have to spend a fortune to do it. All you have to do is understand how to correctly accessorize, and start putting these little pieces to work for you.

What accessories can do for you: • Draw attention to your assets. • Pull Attention away from trouble spots. • Give various looks to one outfit. • Make an outfit look expensive. • Update or modernize classic clothing styles. • Relate different items of your outfit to eachother. • Define personal style. These little trinkets you have stored away in your closets and drawers can help from finishing an outfit to drawing attention away from figure challenges, accessories can do the job!

Photographer Spotlight | KIMBERLY KRAUK

Photographer Spotlight Kimberly Krauk Kimberly Krauk, a photographer based out of Charleston, South Carolina, is one who’s work has intrigued us here at Le Rouge. Her work is one that is unique and awe inspiring. Her photographs are works of art that fit perfectly with the type of images we love! We had a few questions for her, and here’s what she had to say! BIO My name is Kimberly (Kimmie) Krauk and I own Zoom Photography in Charleston, SC. I was born and raised in Charleston and graduated from the C of C with a Bachelors of Science in Early Education. For the better part of the last ten years, I have been working for an organization called Invest in Children, teaching music and art to at-risk and traumatized youth in the US and in Africa. I travel to Africa every 3 or 4 months providing these music/art camps to kids in Uganda, Ethiopia and Rwanda. I am blessed to be able to incorporate all of my passions into what I do. As a photographer and a musician, I am able to help teach kids to communicate with non-verbal means of expression. This is vital for traumatized children because sometimes they are simply incapable of using words to describe what they’ve seen/experienced. Music and art helps them to begin the healing process. I believe that the work I do influences my photography as well. I can take very straight journalistic-style pictures one day and very edgy, emotive pictures the next.

subjects on that two month trip; landscapes, still life, animals, etc...but I quickly discovered that my passion was capturing people. When I returned to the states, I slowly began shooting models and before I knew it, all my spare time was booked! It turned into a business for me back in 2008. I am completely self-taught and I’m still learning. I LOVE IT! What inspires you to shoot? I believe that God has created us beautiful in His sight. I see beauty in every single person I meet. It is my passion to capture that and bring it out in the images I create. That doesn’t necessarily mean that I’m looking to take a ‘pretty’ picture. I got over trying to do ‘pretty’ long ago! My goal is to reach down into the soul of a person and bring out those qualities that impact us and draw on the emotive nature of man. I want the viewer to look at an image and connect with what they see and be inspired- whether it’s emotional, physical or spiritual in nature.

How long have you been a photographer?

What is your preferred style?

I held my first professional quality camera back in 2002 when I took a trip to Europe. A friend of mine let me use his Canon and explained to me that in order to appreciate the world in a new way, I had to see it in a new way. He encouraged me to view things from different perspectives (i.e. “Ants Eye View” / “Birds Eye View”) and let creativity be my guide. I photographed all kinds of

I like all styles, but my preferred style is more artistic and ethereal in nature. I like creating what looks like movies stills or fine art pieces. Fashion is a blast too... especially because it can encompass both of these areas nicely.
