ur cover-shoot was done at an antique shop in downtown Columbia, South Carolina. The fine antiques complemented Sergio Hudson’s designs very well. Our team did an amazing job that day, and the models, Hayley and Nikita worked flawlessly. Everything was perfect, from the models, wardrobe, hair, photography. The whole team did an amazing job, and it was such a blast to shoot that day!

Samanta graduated from FIDM of LA just 18-months ago and began designs clothes to help out her friends. They wanted something flirty without having to bare so much skin. • Mabel Cortez of Mabella Chic is

for independent women who are not afraid to express themselves. Mabel applied to PHX Fashion Week and showcased her collection as an emerging designer in 2011. The collection made the top five but did not win yet this year she was personally invited to come back and show as an Established Designer. The collection is being carried in three boutiques across Arizona however she is looking to expand into LA, Miami and NYC. W

hen fall’s cooler weather starts strolling in, we immediately bust out our cute cardigans, our leopard print scarves and oh so cute closed toed shoes. We relish the moment when we can snatch the brand new boots we bought on sale from the dark recesses of our closet and let them see light. However, not only does our wardrobe morph, but our choice in makeup does too. The trend that seems to resurrect every fall is the bold vampy lip. The hot hue for F/W 2012 is cranberry. You don’t have to limit yourself to this tone, there’s a wide array of colors in the red family you can rock. However, you must beware of the application, if it’s not applied correctly you can have disaster all over your pout and teeth, and chin…you get the point. We’ve put together a tutorial on which colors are best for your skin tone and how to apply them. First we’ll give you a few pointers to

look for in picking out the best red lipstick that best suits your skin tone: Fair skin, Medium and Olive toned skin If you’re fair skinned you should try wearing blue –red lipstick. As a general rule, lip colors that have similar undertones to you skin’s will look the most natural on you. A true cherry lip looks beautiful on fair skin. You can balance the red lip applying natural toned eye shadow, and a few coats of mascara or falsies. Also, it is recommended to line your lip and fill it in with a pencil (these have more pigment than lipstick) and finish with a moisture rich lip balm for shine. If you have sun kissed medium skin, you

should try wearing a sheer red. These have a tendency of looking fresh, and helps keep that vacation glow to your skin a bit longer. For Olive Skin, try using a smoldering classic red. These colors are ultra flattering on this skin tone. To prevent this color from feathering, you can first outline your lip with a clean silicone based lip liner. For brown and dark skinned beauties Depending whether your skin is on the cool or warm side, this’ll determine the red tone you choose. Cool undertones choose reds that have the blue hue to it. You can really pull off any red, but if you rock the blue hues those will give you that extra oomph. If you have more

of a warm undertone deep tones that have either blue or browns in them, but not too much of either. Applying the color Here’s what you’ll need to have in your arsenal: Foundation, concealer or a product specifically made for blocking out your natural lip tone. • Red Lipstick • Lip liner that matches your lipstick • Lip gloss (can be clear or red-tinted and have shimmer, if you like) • Lip Brush

Step 1

Start off with clean bare lips. If your lips are chapped or dry we recommend applying a small amount of lip scrub with your finger to exfoliate your lips.

Step 2

Block out your natural lip tone by using concealer or foundation. You can even use a product specifically for this. This step will prevent the red from bleeding and will allow your lip color to pop.

Step 3

Carefully outline your lip liner making it even and symmetrical. The cupids bow is the area of your upper lip with two peaks and a valley in the center. Continue lining the rest of your lips with the lip liner.

Step 4

Fill in your whole upper and lower lip with the liner. This will intensify the lipstick when applied and will make your color last longer.

Step 5

Apply the red lipstick on your lips. Start by applying in the center and working the color to the outer corner.

Step 6

Lastly, apply lip gloss to the center of your bottom lip. This is a trick that makes your lips appear fuller. Have fun getting all vamped up for the holidays!

he smoky eye will always be a classic look to wear. Once again a trend favorite, the smoky eye dominates Fall and Winter make-up trends. What sets this season apart are the vibrant colors choices, which almost have a kaleidoscope effect. Placement is key to achieve the right look. The darkest color can be placed on the eyelid or crease, just be sure there is a fading effect and of course, remember to blend.

First you’ll want a pale base shadow, then for your lid and crease; you can change it up and try any sultry hue over charcoal. You can even add a touch of sparkle (especially for the holidays). You want eyes to have a smoldering yet a sparkly effect. Add black liner along lashes, blending it to soften the edge. To give your look more impact, add some falsies, the longer the bigger the va-voom! Here are some steps you can take to get this sultry look: • 1. Use a small fluffy brush and sweep a plum (or your preferred hue) onto your lids, then blend it into creases and just beyond the outer corners. • 2. With a small flat blush, dust sparking gold shadow around the inner corners. These jewel tones are extremely flattering to all eye colors because they add warmth. • 3. Trace over upper lashes and inside the lower inner rims with an onyx-colored pencil before curling lashes and topping with mascara (or opting for the falsies, you can still follow these steps with the falsies).

S

ergio Hudson is an astoundingly talented high fashion designer based out of Columbia, South Carolina. His designs have dressed celebrities such as Juliana Rancic and Fantasia, among others. We are privileged to have interviewed him, and take a look at his fabulous designs. One look at his line and we think, New York, Paris and Milan. This is where he’ll be in a matter of time, but until then, we had the 54 LE ROUGE opportunity to interview him.

LRM: What inspired you to be a designer? SH: Growing up I was raised by a fashionable mother. I thought everybody’s mother wore Manolo’s and Chanel like mine did. We weren’t rich, but she always wore all these fabulous things that I thought everybody’s mom spent money on shoes and clothes the way my mother did. Because of this, I’ve always been a fan of fashion. My sister was also a sought after model, and that’s how I got the “fashion bug”. The moment that made me say “I’m going to be a designer” is watching Entertainment Tonight when they interviewed the designer of the Catwoman suit for the Batman Return’s movie. When I saw the sketches for that suit that Michelle Pfeiffer wore I said “I am going to be a fashion designer, period!” Oh and watching the movie Betsey’s Wedding. So Three things, my mother, the Catwoman suit on Batman Returns and Betsey’s Wedding. LRM: What do you feel is your biggest achievement so far? SH: My biggest achievement career wise, I would say, is having my own show room. Having my show room, with my clothes on the racks, and my logo on the wall is amazing to me. Another one is when I first started dressing Lisa Whu-Hartwell from the Real Housewives of Atlanta. She was my first celebrity

client. When she went to the NAACP image awards, I think that was two years ago, she wore one of my gowns, and was among the 5 best dressed. Also, when I made Lisa a dress for the promos of Real Housewives, the second season, there was an ad in Vogue of her wearing my dress, so I can say my clothes were in Vogue! Aside from all the red carpet stuff, I’d have to still say my biggest is having my show room; it’s achieving the smaller things that matter. LRM: What celebrity has been your favorite? SH: Without a question, Lisa. She’s become a friend, and as my first celebrity client, she took a chance on me. To this day she’s still an advocate for me. Then there’s Fantasia. She’s my darling, so sweet! You just always want to hug her. So I would say my favorites are Lisa and Fantasia. LRM: Where do you see yourself 10 – 15 years from now? SH: I definitely see myself in stores, and to be well on my way to be a household name. I don’t want Sergio Hudson to die with me. I want it to be a legacy for my children and grandchildren. Like Ralph Lauren, I love Ralph Lauren his brand is eternal. So I definitely see myself probably in New York, but I want to keep my roots here, so I definitely want to keep my showroom here, because this is home. I want to stay relevant and become a

classic household name, which is why I design the way I do. LRM: When you’re designing your collections, what is it that inspires you? What do you look at or look for inspiration? SH: I get inspired by a woman. For example, my Holiday collection is inspired by watching Michelle Obama at the Democratic Convention. Just seeing the way she carried herself, the way she moved and spoke. For my Fall/Winter 2013 I was inspired by going through my pictures and I found a picture of Bianca Jagger in this white suit and I was like “Oh my goodness! I really like this.” I also found a picture of Tina Turner in one of her well known dresses. Just put these two amazing women together, and my Fall/Winter 2013 collection was born. It’s going to be simply amazing! LRM: Oh we can’t wait! SH: I also get inspired by observing the fashion of different eras. I’m heavily inspired by the 80’s and the 50’s. My inspiration will always be a cinched waist and exaggerated hips. But at the end, it’s always a woman that inspires me. he new year always brings along the resolution, and the biggest one of all is...wait for it...weight loss. With a lot more people being concious of their health, a lot of new weightloss techniques have popped up all over th place, In this article, our Copy Editor, Lori Cunningham has given us but a few to consider! Plyometric Training

A big trend this year is plyometrics, which is, designed to produce fast and powerful movements. Generally used by athletes to improve performance especially those that involve speed, quickness and power. Some examples of plyometric exercises are box jumps; jump squats, medicine ball throws and the old stand by jump roping. Tabata-Style

Training

Interval

We all love our interval training, but if you are looking for the newest trend, it is Tabata. Tabata is eight timed sets of any exercise whether weights, cardio or plyometrics completed with twenty seconds of max effort followed by ten seconds of rest. Because of the proven fitness benefits, Tabata style workouts will start showing up in boot camps, kettleball workouts and even spinning classes

Never before have there been more apps geared towards fitness. These apps will make it possible to track your progress, keep food journals, and also seek community support. hen stepping onto Anastasia Chernoff’s front porch I immediately felt a sense of calm and a twinge of happiness; this just by experiencing the soft yet happy color pallet of her front porch. Upon entering her home, I was welcomed by the beautiful smile of one of the kindest, inspiring and most talented people I’ve recently met. Her home is artfully arranged with her amazing work that is displayed with such beautiful taste. I must say, upon completing the interview I left with a new sense of inspiration and empowerment to continue on the current path that I’ve chosen in my career. Getting to talk to her was amazing in itself and I’m happy to say I left her home knowing I have a new friend. Anastasia is a local artist inspired to begin her journey after an enlightening trip taken to Botswana, where the methods of justice used there teach the true meaning of forgiveness. She has been practicing her craft since 2005.

LRM: What inspires your work as an artist? AC: Everything I see, hear touch, taste and the people that are around me. I don’t know what I’m creating while I’m working because I work while I’m under self hypnosis. I was once asked to participate in a two week residency at USC in their art program. I would have had to work in front of the students. I wanted to do it so badly, and would definitely do it if the offer still stands, but the method that I use is may be too unusual for the students since I’ve never been taught, and because I don’t truly don’t know what I’m doing while I’m creating. The director of the art program thought it would have been great, just showing them how I do. LRM: But that’s what makes it true art, it’s innate and comes from the heart, not just something you’re creating because of some theory you’re being taught. What is your preferred method? AC: For me to create a solid body of work, being under self hypnosis is a necessity. I’m going to make better work, I’m going to work faster, and I’m not going to question what I’m creating. I won’t even consider what people are going to think about. I feel that its my purest work that surfaces when I’m under hypnosis.

LRM: Is there a certain mood or feeling you have to be in to create? For example, an experience that makes you want to be under hypnosis and work? AC: Most definitely, severe emotional change. For me, I get through it much faster when I go and work it out in the studio. I used to internalize a lot growing up as an only child, and being able to share and show how I feel is easier than verbalizing. LRM: What is the best thing about being an artist? AC: There’s so many great things! Being able to live as who you truly are inside, by expressing that through your artwork is one of the most honest professions you can possibly have. I mean, what is you see is what you get. You can do crazy things and people be we “that is amazing!” You don’t have to assimilate to the people around you to what you’re not. Art brings people from all walks of life together from a three year old child to a 90 year old woman as far a communication goes. Another great thing about being an artist is when people tell you what they see in a piece that you’ve done, and you’ll see it in a way you wouldn’t have even thought. The beauty of it is that there is no right or wrong answer, it’s all subjective. You learn so much from other people on their commentary in what they see in a piece. LRM: What advice do you have for aspiring artists? AC: Number one: Don’t consider what other people are going to think about your work, because it is not their work, it is yours. I have a difficult time when someone shows me a piece that’s in progress and they ask me, “What do you think I should do?” I mean, who am I to say? Everyone’s work is unique and unique to them. One of my favorite things is to have a new artist show at my gallery, it reminds me of when I started, and I remember how nerve wracking it was, but at the end of the day it went great, and I love to see new artists experience

ur very own Ania Matusz had the opportunity of interviewing the Avett Brothers for Le Rouge’s November issue! They graciously conceded and here’s what Scott Avett let us know!

LRM:

How is the tour going?

SA: Fine so far.

We are in Portland, Oregon right now and all is well, all is very well.

LRM: Any funny stories? SA: Lots of funny stories. We travel very much and we enjoy ourselves doing it. LRM: Since you travel so much, where do you

call home?

SA: North Carolina

LRM: What do you take as your inspiration? What did you inspire to be like? SA: As a child, I didn't really think of who

I wanted to be like. We just practiced, we played music together, and we were creating it together. We were staying together, performing together. We dreamed about being better and brush certain areas. We never set up any plans to be anything, we just enjoyed music and if we had any questions, we were fortunate to ask our parents and our questions were answered. There was no real inspiration or goal, we were just fortunate for it to work the way it has.

LRM: What role do you believe musical groups

like yourself have in fashion?

SA: What has carried us from the beginning and moving forward and I don’t know if this applies to other bands is that if you feel very confident in whatever you are wearing, wherever you are, you can convince anyone that what you are is important and fashionable or good looking or special and if you do believe in it and you do have conviction for it that it will convince anyone in Paris or New York or anywhere else. For us we are trying to maintain that honesty with who we are and what we do. The whole thing working together helps convince people, really I would

think, I would hope, it will help people be who they are with confidence and conviction. And that makes them attractive.

LRM: What research do you do for the material to write a song? SA: “There’s no education, there’s no research

to that” describing how to articulate feelings and expression

LRM: Do you have a positive message to Le Rouge readers / fans? SA: You have a choice ever day, you have a

choice every moment to do something towards good or something towards something honest or true. One day at a time.
