It’s a jungle out there for Blu, Jewel and their three kids in RIO 2, after they venture from that magical city into the wilds of the Amazon for a family reunion. Widely considered one of the best animated features of all time, The King and the Mockingbird (Le Roi et l’Oiseau) has been cited by Studio Ghibli’s Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata as a profound influence on their work. It is adapted from a fairy tale by Hans Christian Anderson about a tyrannical King ruling over the kingdom of Takicardia. The King is in love with a beautiful shepherdess in a painting on his wall, but she is in love with a chimneysweep from another artwork. At night the paintings come to life, and together they attempt to flee. Hiding at the top of the palace they team up with the spirited Mr Bird, the only creature who dares to make fun of the King, before leading the police on a wild chase...

Sun 6 April, 3pm, HPPH Dir. Lee Unkrich, USA, 2010, 103 mins

In 1995, when Pixar created Toy Story, the first completely computer generated feature film, it changed the way animated films were made forever. Woody the cowboy has always been Andy’s favourite toy, but when Buzz Lightyear arrives one birthday, a bitter rivalry begins that threatens the harmony of the toybox and Woody’s friendship with all the other toys.

Pixar step up a gear for the sequel to their most beloved franchise. When Woody is accidentally sold to a toy collector who plans to ship him off to a museum in Japan, it is up to Buzz and the rest of Andy’s toys to mount a daring rescue. Meanwhile Woody learns of his history and makes some new friends who want him to stay with them.

All good things must come to an end and the final instalment of the Toy Story trilogy is both heartwarming and tear-inducing. With Andy all grown up, the toys are accidentally packed off to a day-care centre instead of being safely boxed up in the attic. Befriended by Lotso, Woody and the gang plan their escape, but can they trust the cuddly bear?

Probably the best animated trilogy of all time – back to back! With loads of fun activities for the whole family including making your own toy and having a go at a thaumatrope, plus a few surprises. Don’t forget to come as your favourite character and win a prize in our competition or if you don’t fancy it, then bring your favourite toy in fancy dress! We are also offering to take your pre-loved and perhaps unused toys off your hands in our Toy Re-homing – we’ll make sure they get the chance at the new life that they deserve. All toys will be donated to Young Lives Leeds, supported by Voluntary Action Leeds helping to improve the lives of children, young people and families in Leeds. Market Wraps will be there throughout the day and will have a special Toy Story snack on hand to keep you going! Young Lives Leeds supports children’s Third Sector and Charitable Organisations to improve the lives of children, young people and families in Leeds, by giving these organisations the voice, information and advice they need to build better services.

We are the Best!

Thu 10 April, 10.30am, HPPH Dirs. Ray Ashley, Morris Engel, Ruth Orkin, USA, 1953, 80 mins

Sat 5 April, 6pm, HPPH Dir.Kim Mordaunt, Australia/Thailand/ Laos, 2013, 96 min, Lao with English subs

Thu 10 April, 8:15pm, HPPH Dir. Lukas Moodysson, Sweden, 2013, 102 mins, Swedish with English subs

Arguably the very first ‘indie’ movie made outside the American studio system, Little Fugitive is a groundbreaking low budget gem. The film follows seven year old Joey, who runs off to Coney Island to hide out, after being tricked into thinking he has killed his older brother while playing with a rifle.

Set in rural Laos, this spirited fable-like family drama tells the story of scrappy ten-year-old Ahlo, who yearns to start a new life after his village is displaced to make way for a dam. After a long journey through a land scarred by the legacy of war, to prove he’s not bad luck he decides to enter the most exciting and dangerous competition of the year: the Rocket Festival.

Set in early 1980s Stockholm, We are the Best! is a raucous tale of three preteen outcasts who form an all-girl punk band from Swedish auteur Lukas Moodysson. Neglected or taken for granted at home and school, the three girls react by making themselves unignorable and when they are mocked for looking different, they demand centre stage.

The Cinema of Childhood season is curated by filmmaker Mark Cousins, presented by Filmhouse and supported by the British Film Institute’s Programming Development Fund, awarding funds from the National Lottery.

Eleven-year-old cycling fanatic Freddy is the son of a butcher in an idyllic village in rural 1970s Belgium. His life is turned upside down when the first supermarket in the village opens its doors. To mark the opening the supermarket organises a cycling race and the winner will get to meet cycling legend Eddy Merckx. Freddy’s father opposes the supermarket and the competition, but Freddy subscribes behind his back. By participating in the race a new world opens, not only for Freddy, but also for all those around him. “Cycling fans rejoice! Self-centred, arrogant teenage rock band ‘System Failure’ are on the verge of success - a record producer wants them to open for a major band, as long as they play their hit ‘When Inge is Dancing’. All is going well until guitarist Joscha injures his hands and can’t play. The only replacement they can find is Inge, who is furious about the song they wrote about her. While trying to convince her to help them achieve their dream, all the band members begin to realise there is more to life than fame and fortune.

documentary Magic Camp

Project Wild Thing

A Story of Children and Film

Thu 3 April, 6pm, HPPH Dir. David Bond, UK, 2013, 83 mins

Wed 9 April, 6pm, HPPH Dir. Mark Cousins, UK, 2013, 106 mins, English with some subtitles

Tannen’s Magic Camp in America is the real-life Hogwarts where budding young magicians come every summer to hone their skills while learning to cope with the pressures of growing up. The documentary follows several young teenage hopefuls eager to follow in the footsteps of previous Magic Camp graduates including David Copperfield and David Blaine.

David Bond is concerned. His daughter, like city kids everywhere, is becoming dependent on TV and the internet, spending too much time indoors. He decides to try and find a way to compete against the marketing brands taking up so much of his daughter’s life and with the help of a number of professionals he goes about selling Nature to British families with amusing results.

Following the success of his sixteen-hour visual love letter to cinema, The Story of Film, Mark Cousins returns with a passionate and detailed look at the portrayal of children in the movies throughout cinema’s history. With clips of films from all over the world, this is an opportunity to discover some amazing hidden gems, including the stunning Little Fugitive, also showing in LYFF (see page 15).

“A spell-binding film! I’m wand-ering how I can go to this camp. To summon up - it’s fab!.” - George, MediaFish

“Living life in nature, this wonderful little documentary markets the outdoors to a skeptical generation.” - Imogen, MediaFish

“This film is a treasure trove of new discoveries, even for an old film geek like me.” - Alex, Leeds International Film Festival Programme Manager

Once you start looking, doors open up, ghosts materialise, patterns emerge and windows reveal the city’s past. In Invisible Cinema, Ben Waddington reveals the tricks of the trade that will allow young house detectives to piece together the lost stories that are all around us. All it takes is sharp eye, an ear for a story and a keen sense of adventure. Children MUST be accompanied by an adult.

Could a robot help to solve problems in the area you live? Design a HelpfulBot then use collage and stop motion animation to bring it to life and tell your story. Feel free to bring your own drawings or make your own at the workshop and take home a copy of your film.
