We are MediaFish, a group of young people from across Leeds with an interest in film who meet in the Film Academy at Leeds Town Hall every week. We help to organise the Leeds Young Film Festival, selecting films and creating the programme as well as designing the brochure and running the events. We’ll be your guides to the festival so feel free to ask us any questions - we’re happy to help!

Welcome to the 15th Leeds Young Film Festival - a celebration of all things film for your Easter holidays. There is lots of family fun, including favourites Scooby Doo, Moshi Monsters, Horrid Henry and a Disney extravaganza as well as classic cinema and a brand new selection of the best new films from across the world.

For 2014 we’ve worked hard to bring you an exciting collection of films, from local productions shot in Yorkshire to the latest big budget blockbusters. Our opening gala this year is a special premiere of Rio 2 in 3D which you can see before anyone else in the UK and USA! We’re opening the Toy Story toybox to bring you all three servings of Pixar’s most beloved franchise as well as some classic Disney animated favourites. In celebration of Le Grand Depart from Leeds in July we have several films based around the Tour de France and cycling - just look for the special logo. This is just a small selection of the amazing films on offer so whether you’ve been to the film festival before or this is your first time, we know you’ll love it. We strive really hard to ensure that you get the best experience of the Film Festival and we know that sometimes it can be hard to get tasty, healthy food at the cinema, so this year we’ve partnered up with Market Wraps who will be bringing some of their amazing food for you to enjoy. Market Wraps is not going to just bring their famous pulled pork wraps to the Leeds Young Film Festival they have also been working on a special menu item especially for our younger fans, “Scooby Snack box” containing a toasted wrap filed with fresh homemade meatballs, melted cheese, lettuce, tomato, accompanied with a small bag of “scooby snack“ sweets and a drink. There will also be the amazing halloumi cheese wrap, served with mediterranean vegetables, and a Yorkshire rapeseed and lemon drizzle cake. Following the huge success of our Scooby-Doo event last year, we are bringing him back with another feature-length outing, alongside lots of exciting activities, including a treasure hunt,maskmaking and design-your-own monster. Ben Shires (Officially Amazing!) and Katie Thistleton (CBBC presenter) host a showcase of the films, television, games and websites nominated at last year’s BAFTA Children’s Awards. A fun mix of live demonstrations, behind-the-scenes films and interviews will highlight the talent behind the nominations from actors to animators, composers to directors. Aimed at a family audience (7-12 year olds) there will be plenty of opportunity for audience interaction with competitions, challenges and Q&As. They’ll be chatting to some of the talented people behind your favourite programmes including Sam Watts, composer for Wizards vs Aliens and the creative team behind Strange Hill High. Nominations included The Amazing World of Gumball, Moshi Monsters, ParaNorman, Sam & Mark’s Big Friday Wind-up, Strange Hill High, Wizards Vs Aliens and Wolfblood so you’re bound to find lots to enjoy at this very special event.

While the Scooby gang are testing out a video game based on their exploits they are sucked into the game by an evil virus. Teaming up with the cyber versions of themselves, they must defeat the phantom virus and escape back to the real world.

When Madame Souza’s grandson, Champion, is kidnapped during the Tour de France, she sets out with her faithful, overweight dog Bruno on a perilous adventure that leads to the small town of Belleville. Penniless, they are befriended by three eccentric elderly women who were once the renowned singers The Triplets of Belleville. Together they take on the local criminal underworld to rescue the missing Champion. Musicians and DJs Mark Daly and Michael Harding formed Animat in 2004. Their unique ‘soundtracking’ take on cult films is a mix of specially written music, tracks from their DJ catalogue and the film’s dialogue and score played live with the screening. They are performing Belleville Rendez-vous to celebrate The Grand Départ.

Wayne Szalinski is a mad scientist working on a top secret miniaturising machine at home. In 1995, when Pixar created Toy Story, the first completely computer generated feature film, it changed the way animated films were made forever. Woody the cowboy has always been Andy’s favourite toy, but when Buzz Lightyear arrives one birthday, a bitter rivalry begins that threatens the harmony of the toybox and Woody’s friendship with all the other toys.

Pixar step up a gear for the sequel to their most beloved franchise. When Woody is accidentally sold to a toy collector who plans to ship him off to a museum in Japan, it is up to Buzz and the rest of Andy’s toys to mount a daring rescue. Meanwhile Woody learns of his history and makes some new friends who want him to stay with them.

All good things must come to an end and the final instalment of the Toy Story trilogy is both heartwarming and tear-inducing. With Andy all grown up, the toys are accidentally packed off to a day-care centre instead of being safely boxed up in the attic. Befriended by Lotso, Woody and the gang plan their escape, but can they trust the cuddly bear?

Fans of The Breakfast Club will love this Spanish supernatural comedy about a group of five ghostly students who are haunting a troubled highschool. Modesto is a teacher who can see dead people and realises that he may be able to help the students move on if they can graduate. But how do you go about teaching five wayward teenage ghosts stuck in the 80s?

Arguably the very first ‘indie’ movie made outside the American studio system, Little Fugitive is a groundbreaking low budget gem. The film follows seven year old Joey, who runs off to Coney Island to hide out, after being tricked into thinking he has killed his older brother while playing with a rifle.

Set in rural Laos, this spirited fable-like family drama tells the story of scrappy ten-year-old Ahlo, who yearns to start a new life after his village is displaced to make way for a dam. After a long journey through a land scarred by the legacy of war, to prove he’s not bad luck he decides to enter the most exciting and dangerous competition of the year: the Rocket Festival.

Set in early 1980s Stockholm, We are the Best! is a raucous tale of three preteen outcasts who form an all-girl punk band from Swedish auteur Lukas Moodysson. Neglected or taken for granted at home and school, the three girls react by making themselves unignorable and when they are mocked for looking different, they demand centre stage.

The Cinema of Childhood season is curated by filmmaker Mark Cousins, presented by Filmhouse and supported by the British Film Institute’s Programming Development Fund, awarding funds from the National Lottery.

Based on a story by Rudyard Kipling, The Jungle Book tells of Mowgli, a boy who has been raised by wolves in the Indian jungle. When the wolves hear that the fierce tiger, Shere Kahn, is nearby, they decide to send Mowgli to a local ‘man tribe’ where he can grow up as a human. On his way to the village, Mowgli makes lots of new friends and questions whether to leave the jungle.

When little orphan girl Penny is kidnapped by the evil pawnshop owner Madame Medusa and her sidekick Snoops, brave mouse Miss Bianca and shy janitor Bernard of the Rescue Aid Society set out to find her. With the help of Orville the Albatross they travel to Devil’s Bayou where they find Penny is being forced to search pirate caves for the Devil’s Eye, the world’s largest diamond.

Tannen’s Magic Camp in America is the real-life Hogwarts where budding young magicians come every summer to hone their skills while learning to cope with the pressures of growing up. Leeds Young Film Festival, ArtForms and Logistik are delighted to present the 2014 Golden Owl Awards, celebrating the work of Leeds schools, community groups and individual filmmakers. This ‘Oscars’ style red carpet, black tie extravaganza will showcase the best new films from the emerging talent across the city in the splendour of Leeds Town Hall with awards being handed out by local dignitaries and celebrities. Introduced this year by David Dimbleby and hosted by Dean Smith with accompaniment from Leeds Youth Jazz and Training Orchestras this will be a night to remember!

The 2014 Independent Directions Young Filmmaker Award (the INDIs) showcases the best UK short films made by young people who are making films without funding, professional support or schools’ involvement. The competition is about innovation, a raw talent in filmmaking and clever or engaging storytelling with a DIY approach. With prizes in four categories, from under 11s through to 20-25 year olds, the competition is an opportunity to see a great selection of films from the next generation of filmmakers. Understanding buildings is like detective work: you need to gather the clues that will tell you the true story of the building. Once you start looking, doors open up, ghosts materialise, patterns emerge and windows reveal the city’s past. In Invisible Cinema, Ben Waddington reveals the tricks of the trade that will allow young house detectives to piece together the lost stories that are all around us. All it takes is sharp eye, an ear for a story and a keen sense of adventure. Children MUST be accompanied by an adult.

Interested in making your own stop-motion films but have no idea where to start? At this special day-long introduction to animation you can learn the process of storyboarding, model making, camera techniques and film editing. Make your mini-masterpiece using stop-motion animation software ‘I Can Animate’ and video editing software iMovie. You will get a copy of your film to take home with you and have the chance to see your creation on the big screen at the Festival Showcase on Fri 11 April at Hyde Park Picture House.

Want to learn how to make your own music? To celebrate the Tour de France coming to Leeds in July we have created this special two day music workshop in conjunction with composer and sound artist Phill Harding, based on the film UPSIDEdown (see page 21). Across the two days you will learn about sound recording and then get a chance to make your own music track using bicycle parts and accessories, finally editing it together on the computer with Audacity music editing software.

Animate a HelpfulBot! The Film Festival’s most popular workshop returns once again and this year we’ve teamed up with March of the Robots on their mission to make 10,000 robots for Leeds! Could a robot help to solve problems in the area you live? Design a HelpfulBot then use collage and stop motion animation to bring it to life and tell your story. Feel free to bring your own drawings or make your own at the workshop and take home a copy of your film.

Working with ELFM’s award winning music video team, you’ll get hands-on experience planning and shooting a music video in the stunning surroundings of Leeds Town Hall and then get a chance to see it on the big screen at the Leeds Young Music Video Awards 2014 on 13th April at The Brundenell Social (see page 26 for more details).

Join coding expert and Minecraft fan Martin O’Hanlon in this creative workshop where you will learn how to take advantage of Minecraft add-ons and write your own code to do something different in the game. Learn how to create coloured blocks, make your character walk on air and much more. You don’t need to know anything about coding and you’ll get a worksheet to take away so you can carry on your hacking at home. You must bring a laptop with Minecraft installed for this workshop.
