OPENING GALA The King’s Speech

Dir. Tom Hooper, UK/Australia, 2010, 111 mins, English, 35mm Thursday 4th November, 7.30pm, Leeds Town Hall, £6.50 / £5.00 One of the most anticipated films of the year, the big audience favourite at Toronto Film Festival, and already tipped for Oscar success, The King’s Speech is the must-see opening film of the 24th Leeds International Film Festival (part filmed in Leeds too!). Colin Firth delivers another terrific performance in this moving, heartwarming story of the man who became King George VI, the father of Queen Elizabeth II. It is the mid-thirties and radio is king. In the words of King George V (Michael Gambon), the members of the Royal Family are forced to become the lowest of creatures: actors. But his son “Bertie” (Firth) is plagued by a

2

dreaded stutter and considered unfit to be king. Encouraged by his caring wife Elizabeth (Helena Bonham Carter), he engages the assistance of an unorthodox speech therapist named Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush) who helps the heir to the throne free himself from his powerlessness. The King’s Speech will show in the magnificent setting of Leeds Town Hall, complete with a giant new cinema screen. Buying tickets in advance is highly recommended. The screening will start at 7.30pm – early arrival is advised, and the Film Festival bar in the Town Hall foyer will be open from 6pm.

Janek, 18, is the lead singer in a punk band and Basia is the girl he falls for. But when her socialist father is arrested by the police, she wants nothing more to do with Janek, whose father is part of the oppressive regime that imprisoned him. Struggling with his own growing rebellious spirit and the duties of being a son, Janek makes a decision with huge implications for the people he loves. When Lea’s father dies, her troubled and vulnerable mother goes back to her former lover Ole, a heavy drinking brutal man who casts a dark shadow over their life. Lea turns to drugs, and when she has a baby she desperately wants to protect her child, even if it means making an impossible decision. A sincere and touching film which deals with a difficult subject but maintains a real warmth and empathy throughout.

Dir. David Michôd, Australia, 2010, 113 mins, English, 35mm Sat 6, 19:30, HYDE • Sun 14, 17:00, TOWNHALL1 The best thriller of the year with echoes of Scorsese’s early crime dramas, comes from first-time Australian writer/director David Michôd. His doting grandmother and her three criminal sons, ‘the Cody boys’ are on the run from renegade detectives and Joshua is about to get caught up in a cold-blooded revenge plot that turns the family upside down. Suspenseful, moving and enriched with a real psychological depth, Michôd is a filmmaker to watch.

Mikael is a respected judge, yet his dominating and aloof character alienates him from his wife and children. When the totally mesmerising and enigmatic Tilda (his estranged daughter from his first marriage) turns up and bonds perhaps a little too closely with the brother she has only just found out exists, Mikael finds it harder and harder to maintain his icy control over his children’s blazing and passionate independence.

Forty year old Andreas arrives in a strange city with no memory of how he got there. He’s given a job, an apartment, even a wife and he starts to settle into his new life. But little by little he notices something is wrong and with an increasing sense of dread, he realises there is no way out.

Dir. Raoul Peck, Haiti/France, 2009, 107 mins, French/English/ Creole, ST, DV Mon 15, 16:00, VUE2 • Tue 16, 20:30, VUE2 A Caribbean tragedy of Shakespearean proportions, this superb film, directed by Haiti’s former Minister of Culture, is full to bursting with damning political allegory and intelligent fury at the situation in modern day Haiti. An original take on Alexander Sokurov’s film Moloch (based on Hitler), transplanting the idea to the Tropical heat of Haiti, the tyrannical President lives in a luxurious mountain-top fortress. But rebellion has taken hold of the people below, and is filtering upwards...His erratic behaviour and oppressive sexual advances paint an exquisite allegorical picture of what happens when power falls into the wrong hands.

Mundane History (Jao nok krajok)

Dir. Anocha Suwichakornpong,Thailand, 2009, 82 mins,Thai, ST, 35mm Mon 8, 20:45, VUE2 • Thu 11, 18:30, VUE2 Thai cinema is going from strength to strength, if this spellbinding film is anything to go by. Ake is a boy who is confined to his bed after an accident and whose father finds it hard to relate with him. When male nurse Pun is hired to take care of Ake, an awesome form of healing begins to take place. The non-linear structure of the film works beautifully, and by focusing on the mundane details of everyday life we start to experience something truly transcendental as Pun helps Ake to begin an emotional – and possibly karmic - recovery. A total one of a kind.

The Old School of Capitalism (Stara skola kapitalizma)

Dir. Zelimir Zilnik, Serbia, 2009, 122 mins, Serbian/English, ST, 35mm Fri 5, 16:00, VUE1 • Tue 9, 18:00, VUE1 In a brilliant exposé of the misery-inducing effects of both local and global capital, veteran Serbian agitator Želimir Žilnik blurs the lines between fiction and documentary to sharply satirical, tragicomic effect. With escalating absurdity, the film traces a series of confrontations between disgruntled factory workers, their exploitative bosses and a rogues gallery of businessmen, anarchists, crooks and political opportunists, from a melee with workers in football helmets and security in bulletproof vests to a bizarre hostage situation involving a Russian tycoon and a Wall Street trader.

The Painting Sellers (Taulukauppiaat)

Dir. Juho Kuosmanen, Finland, 2010, 58 mins + 19 mins, Finnish, ST, 35mm Tue 9, 19:00, HYDE ‘Here’s our last money – go buy some glue, beer and petrol’. It’s Christmas time in Finland and freezing: a woman and two men are broke and on the road in a useless van, struggling to sell paintings to anyone. They argue and despair, but can an emerging friendship change their lives? A frankly funny mini human drama, The Painting Sellers won the top prize for new talent at the Cannes Film Festival. Screening with Dear Friend,You Have My Respect, an Estonian black comedy about a painter who has to hang out with his best friend without his wife knowing.

Pepperminta

Dir. Pipilotti Rist, Austria/Switzerland, 2009, 80 mins, German, ST, 35mm Tue 9, 20:45, HYDE • Tue 16, 19:00, HYDE This year’s equivalent of Mermaid (audience hit at LIFF 2008), Pepperminta is an amazing example of fresh vision and huge imagination, rolled up into one deliciously multi-coloured tale. Pepperminta and her two oddball pals go around causing scandal and bliss, making everything they touch turn into a psychedelic colour explosion! An awesome breath of (minty) fresh air, her enlightened and giddy attitude (often lacking in ‘serious’ films!) spreads love and zaniness to all she encounters. Pepperminta makes other films look grey and conservative in comparison - it’s a little trip to heaven on earth!

R U There? UK Premiere

Dir. David Verbeek, Netherlands, 2010, 90 mins, Dutch/English, ST, 35mm Sun 14, 18:30, VUE1 • Tue 16, 16:45, VUE1 • Wed 17, 16:30, VUE1 A very tender and thoughtful film about the prominence of virtual reality in our lives. Jitze is a young Dutch professional gamer who travels the world competing in video game tournaments. During a stay in Taipei, he’s forced to take a few days rest, and a local girl helps him realise what it means to be human in the age of virtual worlds. Avoiding cliched representations of transcendence through sensual exoticism, the film shows how people can change each other’s lives by offering an alternative perspective, bringing us closer to ourselves.

Benjamin Heisenberg, Austria/Germany, 2010, 90 mins, German, ST, DV Sun 7, 20:30,TOWNHALL1 • Fri 12, 19:00, HYDE • Wed 17, 19:00, HYDE Brimming with excitement and action, a bank robber is released from prison but can’t quite seem to shake the habit… A magical mix of thriller, action and art-house, The Robber is hard to categorise and so delightfully engaging that you’ll be with it (and him) the whole way through. By no means a comedy, the energy of this film is intense and serious, and its plot a tour-de-force of minimalist deliberation, but the highoctane story ensures there’s never a dull moment, and we are kept guessing right until the end. Great stuff!

The Secret of Kells

Dirs. Tomm Moore & Nora Twomey, France/Belgium/Ireland, 2009, 75 mins, English, DV Thu 11, 18:30, HOWARD • Sat 20, 12:00, HYDE A spellbinding animation for all ages, The Secret of Kells draws on Celtic mythology and illuminated manuscripts, to tell a magical tale of faith and imagination in dark times. In a remote medieval outpost of Ireland, young Brendan embarks on a new life of adventure when a celebrated master illuminator arrives from foreign lands carrying a book brimming with secret wisdom and powers. To help complete the book, Brendan has to overcome his deepest fears on a dangerous quest that takes him into the enchanted forest where mythical creatures hide.

Shadows of Our Forgotten Ancestors (Tini zabutykh predkiv)

Dir. Sergei Parajanov, Soviet Union, 1964, 97 mins, Ukrainian, ST, 35mm Fri 12, 16:00, TOWNHALL1 Parajanov’s breakthrough film was controversial and a flamboyant break from cinematic conventions, Shadows inspired fellow dissident artists to push the boundaries. The forgotten ancestors are 19th Century Carpathian villagers amongst whom a Romeo and Juliet style doomed romance evolves between a peasant and the daughter of the man responsible for his father’s death. Extravagant camera moves and restlessly bizarre imagery combine to extraordinary effect, quite different from his later, static tableux-vivant films.

Son of Babylon

Dir. Mohamed Al Daradji, Iraq/UK/France/The Netherlands/ Palestine, 2009, 100 mins, Arabic/Kurdish, ST, DV Fri 5, 19:00, HYDE Maverick Leeds based director Mohamed Al Daradji (Ahlaam) returns with an extraordinary, lyrical road movie through Iraq after the fall of Saddam Hussein. On hearing the news that prisoners of war have been found alive in the South, curious young boy Ahmed and his obstinate grandmother set out to uncover the fate of the boy’s missing father, one of the many soldiers who never came home. From the mountains of Kurdistan to the sands of Babylon, the pair hitch rides with strangers and cross paths with fellow pilgrims on an all too similar quest that will determine their lives forever. Sweet Little Lies

(Suîto ritoru raizu) UK Premiere

Dir. Hitoshi Yazaki, Japan, 2010, 117 mins, Japanese, ST, 35mm Sat 13, 18:00, HYDE From the Director of Strawberry Shortcakes (an audience hit at LIFF 2007) comes this gorgeous piece of Japanese cinema, beautifully composed and calmly paced, where strong emotions are bubbling beneath a serene exterior. Ruriko and Satoshi have been married 3 years, and still go through the home rituals of newlyweds. But there are serious cracks – Ruriko is deeply lonely, and every night Satoshi isolates himself from her. When they both meet someone else, they keep lying to each other to keep up the facade, but it’s only a matter of time before they have to make a (rather unexpected) decision.

The Temptation of St. Tony (Püha Tõnu Kiusamine)

Dir. Veiko Õunpuu, Estonia/Sweden/Finland, 2009, 110 mins, Estonian/Russian/French, ST, 35mm Sat 6, 20:00, VUE1 • Sun 7, 15:30, VUE1 • Mon 8, 20:45, HYDE An outrageously stunning modern-day fable with echoes of David Lynch, this wonderfully strange Estonian offering is surely the work of a major new and uncompromising talent. Extraordinary black and white cinematography takes us on a journey through Tony’s grotesque social scene and his bizarre encounters with strange folk including a mysterious gypsy and a wise old prophet to the horrifying debauchery of the ‘Golden Age’ in a sadistic cabaret club. ‘Dreamlike’ isn’t the word, but ‘fever-induced hallucinatory ego trip’ might do the trick!

The Ten Commandments + Live Organ Accompaniment Dir. Cecil B. DeMille, USA, 1923, 136 mins, English, DV Mon 8, 13:00, TOWN HALL1 • FREE Event

Cecil B Demille’s classic original version of The Ten Commandments was in its day the most lavish, expensive film production of all time. The special effects used in the extraordinary scene depicting the parting of the red sea were a closely guarded secret. Unlike the director’s own sound remake in the 1950s, the earlier version weaves a contemporary moral fable of two brothers and their plans to build a cathedral in modern San Francisco into the biblical story of Moses and the Israelites. Screening in the Town Hall with live accompaniment by city organist, Simon Lindley.

Tuesday After Christmas

(Marti, Dupa Craciun) UK Premiere

Dir. Radu Muntean, Romania, 2009, 99 mins, Romanian, ST, 35mm Sun 7, 20:15, VUE1 • Thu 11, 18:00, VUE1 • Fri 12, 18:30, VUE1 An exquisitely crafted portrait of a married man who has fallen in love with another woman, and a stunning example of the Romanian New Wave. The subtelty and compassion with which Muntean presents these people – for they feel like people, not characters – is incredible, and results in a truly powerful piece of cinema that feels so utterly human you will be completely immersed. Wonderfully understated performances skillfully show a common human situation in full colour, when it is all too often stereotyped into black and white. A wonderful find. The cake eating scene is tremendous.

As very young children, Axel and Yanne were separated when they were adopted by different parents – he went to a rich family, and she to a working mother. Yanne knows that Axel exists, but has no idea where he is, and Axel has no idea he even has a sister. But when Yanne’s feisty Polish friend Maria unknowingly starts working as a maid for Axel’s parents, things get pretty complicated! A bit like Twelfth Night set in modern day Oslo, Upperdog is a wonderfully crafted tale about messy human relationships and a darn good watch!

Dirs. Hélène Cattet & Bruno Forzani, France/Belgium, 2009, 90 mins, French, ST, DV Fri 12, 21:00, HYDE • Sun 14, 19:00, HYDE • Wed 17, 18:30, VUE1 Amer (literally meaning ‘bitter’) focuses on three key sensual moments in Ana’s life set against the oppressive backdrop of the imposing family home. A sense of unease slowly builds to an erotic and shocking finale where the line between reality and Ana’s fantasies becomes blurred. Directors Cattet and Forzani have created a wonderful homage to 70s Italian giallo films. The attention to detail lavished on every element of the film, from the poster artwork through to the use of sound and music, results in one of the most original, visionary and emotional genre films of the decade.

Catfish

Dirs. Henry Joost, Ariel Schulman, USA, 2010, 94 mins, English, DV Sun 14, 17:00, HYDE Catfish documents the story of director Ariel’s brother Nev, a photographer, and an 8 year old artist who makes contact online after painting her own version of one of Nev’s photographs. However, this is no tale of friendship and niceties, as the relationship begins to entwine Nev’s whole circle of family and friends in a web of very familiar online social networks, with shocking results. A complex and thoughtful web-based thriller, Catfish’s narrative is Hitchcockian, whilst its commentary is truthful and resonant in our web-obsessed world.

Dir. Daniel Alredson, Sweden/Denmark/Germany, 2009, 148 mins, Swedish, ST, DV Tue 16, 19:30, TOWNHALL1 The late Stieg Larsson could not have predicted how globally popular his books about a world weary journalist and edgy goth hacker would be. Here we find Salander recovering in hospital after being shot and about to face trial for murder. Blomkvist and his researchers try to prove her innocence while Lisbeth plots her own revenge.

Thought Bubble The Thought Bubble Festival is the UK’s largest annual event which celebrates sequential art in all its forms, including everything from superheroes to independent small press. Now in its fourth year and taking place at a variety of venues across Leeds, the festival aims to cater to both long-time comic book fans and those who have never picked up a graphic novel before! Thought Bubble will take place 18th - 21st November 2010 with a centre-piece one day convention on Saturday 20th. Thought Bubble 2010 will include art and writing based workshops for young people and adults, panels and talks lead by industry professionals and a programme of sequential art related film-screenings. The special one day convention includes an incredible line up of leading artists and writers, and over 200 tables selling comics and merchandise. This promises to be one of the best events of its kind in the UK, a great chance to meet critically acclaimed comic book creators and browse a huge selection of memorabilia on sale – brought to you by the biggest and best exhibitors and dealers from across the country – with free entry for under-12s. This year our guest of honour is comics illustrator John Romita Jr, a legend in the industry, who is best known for character defining runs on Spider-Man, Daredevil, Wolverine, and more recently on the hit series KickAss the film adaptation of which saw his debut as a producer and a director (of an animated origin sequence). Recent adaptations of comic properties into box-office hits have seen a renewal of the relationship between sequential art and the silver screen, and Thought Bubble represents a unique opportunity to explore the stories behind the films. Guests this year include Andy Diggle (creator of The Losers), Adi Granov (concept designer for the Iron Man films), Robin Furth (writer on the Dark Tower spin-off comic series), and Sean Phillips (artist on the soon-to-be adapted Incognito comic series). 2010’s programme comprises a wide variety of events including a number of talks and workshops, such as an exploration of the increased appetite for comic book movies, the relationship between pop-culture and the evolution of sequential art, and the possibilities that digital comics represent for creators and readers alike, as well as art and script-writing masterclasses. UK Premiere

Dir. Susana de Sousa Dias, Portugal, 2009, 93 mins, Portuguese, ST, DV Mon 8, 20:00, TOWNHALL2 Using a unique and innovative cinematic style, Susana Sousa Dias presents a series of still photographs of political prisoners during Salazar’s 48 year dictatorship in Portugal. The people depicted in the photographs narrate their extraordinary experiences and reflect on the circumstances surrounding their arrest, their treatment by the regime’s much-feared PIDE (political police) and the subsequent effects on their lives. The technique transforms the remoteness of these historical artefacts and brings the personal stories to life in an unforgettable way.

All Boys

(Poikien bisnes)

Dir. Markku Heikkinen, Finland, 2009, 72 mins, Finnish/German/ Czech, ST, DV Sun 7, 16:00, TOWNHALL2 This exceptional humanitarian documentary looks at the exploitative side of the gay porn industry, from the points of view of those involved, both behind and in front of the camera, letting the people speak for themselves. The craze which started in the 1990s for gay porn featuring young Czech men meant that production companies quickly set up in Prague. But what are the effects on the actors? Is it ethically possible to enjoy pornographic films when you know they have been made through exploitation, both economic and human?

Article 12: Waking Up in a Surveillance Society UK Premiere

Dir. Juan Manuel Biaiñ, UK/Argentina, 2010, 76 mins, English, DV Fri 12, 20:15, HOWARD • Tue 16, 17:00, TOWNHALL2 Article 12 presents an urgent and incisive deconstruction of the current state of privacy, the rights and desires of individuals and governments, and the increasing use of surveillance. The film adopts the twelfth article of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to chart privacy issues worldwide, arguing that without this right no other human right can truly be exercised. It assembles leading academics and cultural analysts including Noam Chomsky, AC Grayling and Amy Goodman to highlight the devastating potency of surveillance, the dangers of complicity, and the growing movement fighting for this crucial right.

The Atlantean Irish + The Family Elan Live Dir. Bob Quinn, Ireland, 2007, 50 mins, English, DV Wed 17, 20:00, HIFI

Architects of Harmonic Rooms and Leeds International Film Festival present an evening of film and live music inspired by Bob Quinn’s seminal documentary series The Atlantean Quartet. Beating the Bomb

Dirs. Wolfgang Matt & Meera Patel, UK, 2010, 70 mins, English, DV Fri 12, 18:15, TOWNHALL2 As a media phenomenon, the nuclear disarmament campaign seems like a throwback to the cold war era, but the dangers are just as real now, making this rousing history of the peace movement timely and important. Beating the Bomb covers 50 years of the movement in Britain against the historical and political backdrop of the atomic age. The narrative follows the so called ‘nuclear deterrent’ and frames the issue within the wider context of global justice. It is also a tribute to peace campaigners and the CND featuring interviews with Tony Benn, Mark Thomas, Walter Wolfgang and Helen John.

The film charts their rise from busking the back streets of Kinshasa and rehearsing in the dilapidated local zoo, to touring the European festival circuit and receiving worldwide acclaim for their vibrant music and uproarious performances.

Beyond this Place UK Premiere

Dir. Kaleo La Belle, Switzerland/USA, 2010, 93 mins, English, DV Wed 10, 18:00, TOWNHALL2 • Mon 15, 16:00, TOWNHALL2 Beyond this Place is an extraordinary documentary about a singular father-son relationship. Filmmaker Kaleo La Belle was given the birth name ‘Ganja’ by idealistic, hippy parents who were both dedicated to a Pacific island commune in the late 60s. Kaleo’s mother became disillusioned and returned to Detroit with her young son, while the estranged father, ‘Cloud Rock’ continued on his path, describing his life as ‘stoned for 40 years’. Now father and son reunite for an epic Pacific Northwest bike ride and Kaleo confronts an absent, eccentric father about his past choices and the effects on their lives.

Russian Lessons

Dirs. Olga Konskaya & Andrei Nekrasov, Russia/Norway/ Georgia, 2009, 110 mins, Russian/Georgian, ST, DV Sun 7, 20:00, TOWNHALL2 An explosive and controversial documentary about the recent war between Russia and Georgia, by Russian filmmakers Andrei Nekrasov, who used to work for the BBC in London, and his late wife Olga Konskaya. Filming at the front lines of the war, they compare their images with the official version of the Russian government – a version adopted unquestioningly by the Western media. ‘Comparable to no one else, he is the only one who dares touch the most sensitive (political) themes and dig into their deepest depths.’ (Rotterdam Film Festival). We will be welcoming the filmmaker.

In an absurdly ironic development, a controversial theory on the inherent violence of tribal life observed in the 1960s and 70s in a society untouched by modern life, is mirrored by the academic scandal, infighting and dubious ethics of the anthropologists themselves.

Throughout the 20th century, this desolate and beautiful landscape has been transformed by ever enhanced methods of oil recovery. Cherry Kino Experimental films by contemporary filmmakers as well as works from film history

Cherry Kino INTRODUCTION

Cherry Kino is the home for wondermental cinema. This year’s selection presents work from the history of avant-garde cinema including the phenomenal (and grossly marginalised) films of Gunvor Nelson, Englishman David Larcher’s mesmeric 16mm epic ‘Mare’s Tail,’ and Warren Sonbert’s glorious symphonic montages. Contemporary work includes Sarah Turner’s extraordinary feature Perestroika, Sharon Lockhart’s uniquely trance-like and durational Double Tide, and five programmes of short filmic works of art, curated according to themes varying from the mystery of matter to the politics of empire, from the strange world of rituals to the subversion of Hollywood. There will also be the chance to get your hands dirty with the Unravel film workshop and the opportunity to attend an art exhibition celebrating the exquisite corpse of film. After the Empire Approx 120 mins Sun 21, 13:00, ESA

Wondermental cinema can be a politically discursive art form, with its ability to question, subvert, oppose and rebel. This programme presents an array of recent works chosen for their political engagement with the idea of empire, whether overt or subtle, asking you to think again. Controlled fury at the hypocrisy of the ‘priveleged’, the quietly powerful flag on the mountain, cinema and dictatorship in North Korea, a multi-screen subversive ethnicity, a cry of ‘why’ in Algeria, a revised Heart of Darkness, Leo Strauss’ connection with torture, photography as colonial appropriation, and rethinking the urban. Includes work by Gioli, Smith, Bärtås, Wong, Devaux, Breuer, Sanborn, Chen and Lurf.

Double Tide

Approx 90 mins Sat 13, 12:00, ART GALL Utterly hypnotic and spell-binding, Sharon Lockhart’s minimalist exploration of landscape and labour as a female clamdigger works the low tides of dawn and dusk. Shot in only two takes with a static camera, we are lulled into meditation by the calm repetition of her (arduous) task in the mudflats, surrounded by the rolling mist and rosy orange hues of sunrise and sunset. Perhaps it’s also political comment: ‘There is something so primal about clamming – the act of reaching into the earth, the dependence on the rhythms of nature. All this struck me as indicative of a pre-industrial time and type of labour, so different from the industrial rhythms of a workplace.’ – S. Lockhart

Gunvor Nelson Approx 90 mins Sat 20, 18:00, ESA

A rare screening of extraordinary work by Gunvor Nelson, the best kept secret in American experimental film. Magnetic intimacy combines with distance, a tension mirrored by astonishing camera work and editing. Respecting the filmed material, she lets it speak, from a portrait of her daughter Oona with a hypnotic soundtrack, to a comical feminist take on a stripper, to an indescribably beautiful swim, to a complex exploration of family. To filmmakers she offers this advice - ‘when you are really immersed, you, yourself... then the film emerges.’ As spectators, becoming immersed in Gunvor Nelson’s films is a great thing to do as something incredible emerges.

Holly Would...

Approx 90 mins Sat 20, 15:00, ESA

Ah, Hollywood. Light of our lives, thorn in our sides...This programme, mostly screened on 16mm, celebrates the delicious way wondermental filmmakers continue to subvert Hollywood and media ‘norms’, by turns dismembering it to re-member it as something new; pointing to the queer aspects that are present either through absence or identification; a deconstruction of linear narrative; a life of imitation; recontextualised film scenes breathing new life; a clever backwards door slamming scene in a Hollywood domestic; a lascivious recreation of a B Movie; and Tscherkassky’s award-winning new work. Mare’s Tail

Dir. David Larcher, UK, 1969, 160 mins, English, DV Sun 7, 14:00, ESA • Sun 14, 13:30, ART GALL “Mare’s Tail is an epic flight into inner space...It is a man’s life transposed into a visual realm…There are spots before your eyes, as when you look at the sun that flames and burns. We look at distant moving forms and flash through them. We drift through suns; a piece of earth phases over the moon. A face, your face, his face, a face that looks and splits into shapes that form new shapes that we rediscover as tiny monolithic monuments…Larcher’s trip becomes our trip to experience. It cannot be watched impatiently, with expectation; it is no good looking for generalization, condensation, complication or implication.” – from Film Is, by Stephen Dwoskin

My Love has an Exquisite Corpse: Elemental Film Exhibition 6th November – 21st November, all day on a showreel in the Leeds College of Art Blenheim Building cafe • FREE Event

Leeds College of Art hosts Cherry Kino’s exhibition of elemental film, including work made by students on Super 8 and 16mm. Playing with the idea of the ‘exquisite corpse’ where each person contributes a ‘body part’ to make a whole, film is treated as an organic form and literally subjected to the Taoist idea of the 5 elements of Chinese medicine – water, wood, fire, earth and metal - putting it through various processes such as ‘drowning’ (water), wrapping around trees (wood), burning (fire), burying (earth), and chemical processing to reveal the silver (metal) in the film emulsion itself.

Mysterious Matter Approx 90 mins Sat 6, 16:00, ESA

‘Transformation is the thing’ states Larry Jordan at the beginning of his new film, Cosmic Alchemy. This selection of films focuses on the magical transformations that can occur through entering into the material of life. From Jordan’s hotly anticipated and stunning work, to Rebello’s great new piece full of substantial questions, to Rouhi and Fouchard’s astonishingly transcendental meditation, to the indescribably awesome ‘Li: the Patterns of Nature’ by Campbell, full of extreme close ups of nature’s processes on 16mm. These magical films remind us that ‘forms are not self-subsistent substances’ (Rebello), and that through the shared flesh of the material world, we can reach the stars.

Night Jewels, Day Blooms Approx 100 mins Sat 6, 19:00, ESA

Startlingly beautiful and unique recent works of filmic art. Includes astonishing layers of light reflections on Super 8, a wondrous animated trilogy about clouds, a high contrast b/w film on the shore, a mesmerising study of swirling stars in a child’s toy, a divinely simple disorientation device, dreamlike sequences in red, yellow, orange, a wonderful film whose image plays the sound, a cricket’s song from beyond the frame, the dawn chorus of a new beginning, a jazz trumpeter, and a glorious film shot in the ripples of a puddle. With work by Clipson, Tsuji, Cailleau, Harris, Machacek, von Greve, Miller, Dorsky, Henderson and Scacchioli.

Sarah Turner, UK, 2009, 116 mins, English, DV Sat 13, 14:30, ARTGALL • Fri 19, 19:00, ESA An absolutely mesmerising journey into psycho-geography, this unique and highly lauded film examines landscape and ghosts, amnesia and representation, innovatively linking global warming to both an artistic and a personal crisis. On Turner’s initial trip to Siberia in 1987-8, she continuously filmed the passing landscape. After 20 years, she ‘repeated both a train journey to Siberia and a process...In this way I realised that photography as an act actually creates rather than records experiences... for me the film very explicitly functions as an environmental allegory. Are we all ghosts passing through as the world moves outside the frame of our (overheated) windows?’ – S. Turner

Rituals

Approx 90 mins Sun 7, 18:00, ESA The idea of journeys, rituals, trips is present in a lot of wondermental cinema. This selection of work from contemporary artist filmmakers delights in explicity tripping – from a gorgeous Super 8 ritual shot in the Lithuanian countryside, to a man’s search through a tropical forest for god Apoekoe, a ritualistic camera dance with flowers, a (literally!) gutsy ritual of a taxidermist, a visionary journey through a metaphorical tunnel, a trip inside the body of film, and many more. Featuring both well known and lesser known artists, this screening will largely be on 16mm film, with an open atmosphere and a bar. With work from Garbstiene, Doing, Lowder, Gent, Cogan, Fleisch and more.

Unravel – A Direct Film Animation Workshop 12:00 - 16:00, with a screening at 16:30 Sun 14, 42 Gallery, 42 New Briggate • FREE Event

Come along and drop into this free hands-on workshop where you can paint, draw and animate directly onto 16mm film! Suitable for all ages. The project is called Unravel, and through workshops all over Britain an epic 16 hour long hand-painted film will be created, which correlates in length with the 874 miles between the two extreme edges of Britain; John O’Groats and Land’s End (one 16mm frame = one metre). The film will link together and be created by local communities throughout England, Scotland and Wales.Truly collaborative filmmaking! This is a drop-in event, so no booking is necessary - come and stay as long as you like.

Warren Sonbert (1947 - 1995)

Approx 60 mins Sun 21, 16:00, ESA

A celebration of just a small part of the superb oeuvre of Warren Sonbert, one of the seminal figures of American wondermental film and rarely shown in the UK. He started making films in 1966 and was given a retrospective before he was 20! His early films feature denizens of the Warhol scene, with his late works culminating in astonishing symphonic montages, both silent and sound, uniting universal human gestures into singular works of moving image artistry. The programme, curated by Jon Gartenberg, is entitled ‘Silent Rhythms / Sound Symphonies II’ and includes the films ‘The Cup and the Lip’ (1986, colour, silent) and ‘Short Fuse’ (1992, colour & b/w, sound), both on 16mm.
