June 15, 2013 Hello Again, It has been said that individuals and companies often make a common mistake. They both stop doing something that works and try to replace it with some not-tested change. A not proven change. For example, the giant Coca-Cola Company in 1985 changed its 100-year-old formula for its world famous Coke. There was such a backlash within two months the company was forced to return its original beverage formula to grocery stores and vending machines — a worldwide change and a worldwide mistake. To save their name and business, they re-introduced the original Coke formula by naming it CocaCola classic. The original Coca-Cola had stood the test of time and the new changed formula or recipe failed. In other words, they stopped doing something that worked, and were smart enough to change back. In chatting about this subject, it was not my intent to labor the subject of change as it pertains to the plans of our leadership in Washington. Mr. Obama gained the office of President of the United States of America by promising or advocating change. He said hundreds, if not thousands of times, that change was needed and he was the right person to make the change. Like the great Coca-Cola Company, his changes have been a dismal failure. We may never be able to pay our financial debts and never is a long time. Millions of American citizens have lost their jobs, their financial well being, including their homes and businesses, college graduates cannot find employment. Even the medical professionals are crying, “Do away with the health program before it’s too late.” I ask what was wrong with America for the last 200 years that needed to be changed? Were we not the greatest nation? The one more people immigrated to? Is it not more than obvious, these new changes are not working and we should learn from Coca-Cola and drop these “changes” and return to the policies of the original classic America while we still can? Just this morning we received a note from a lady stating that a friend or acquaintance of hers disagrees with nearly everything which appears in “Hello Again.” It seems obvious she is a fan of the new change program which is being shoved down the throats of the American citizens. Now for the humor of it all, she has lived in the United States for nearly half a century, enjoying the wonderful benefits of the United States: great jobs, homes, and healthcare. Get this — she is not a citizen. If she thought 50 years ago that the United States was so bad and needed to be changed, why did she come here — and stay here? If given a chance I would like to ask her what is it that she would like to change the U.S. in to. A socialist nation and then some day let it sink into communism? Then go home to where ever she came from because America would no longer be the promised land. In our home village we had two general stores. Now that same village does not have a store. In the 1940’s through the 80’s we could pull into a gas station at nearly all crossroads. Now with even more cars on the road, most of those gas stations are gone. If we stop and realize what is happening, the country we remember is changing before our eyes and we do not seem to notice it. For example, what structure more than any other spoke boldly out saying — I’m of the country. I’m not a village building and certainly not found in a city. I’m a cow barn with a silo or two. I house dairy cows.” Now they are falling in disrepair.

Soon we will not be able to take a Sunday ride into the country and see the old two story cow barns. The roofs of most early barns formed a traditional triangular gable. As farms grew in size and more storage space, hay lofts were needed. These newer barns supported a gambrel roof, distinguished by two slopes, one gentle, one steep. The word ‘gambrel’ comes from a word for the hock or hind leg of a horse, which is roughly the shape as half the profile of the roof. The new gambrel design seemed to be more pleasing to the eye. Some farmers actually removed a triangular roof and replaced it with a roof of gambrel design. With a friend who also has a three-wheeler triketype motorcycle, we enjoy riding country roads. Often we will stop to see the huge sizes of some of the crop and hay fields along with farm buildings. I personally favor the gambrel roof dairy barns. Spend a couple of hours, drive out into the country and stop near some of the farms. Notice the farm buildings, houses, fences, and naturally the farm animals. A few of the Amish farms have teams of huge workhorses and some mules. You will be surprised at the size of the farm tractors. I would sure enjoy driving one of those monsters, or even to drive a 5-6 horse or mule team. What I am suggesting, don’t just drive by the farms without taking a look. Possibly take a minute to realize all of that equipment the farmers have to buy creates jobs for factory and dealership workers. On the brighter side, we are receiving wonderful comments concerning the new Country Editor paper from both advertisers and readers in Herkimer County. According to the last census, the average house in Herkimer County is home to over 3.5 people. When you multiply 3.5 people times the mailed circulation of 26,000, that is equal to a whopping 91,000. Just play with those figures. If each home has two cars, that comes to over 52,000 car buyers. The pastor of a country church asked little Johnny why he was late for Sunday school. “I wanted to go fishing, but my dad and grandfather wouldn’t let me.” “You’re fortunate to have a father like that. Did he say why?” “Yes,” little Johnny answered, “there wasn’t enough bait.” “Grandson, what did you learn in Sunday school this morning?” “Well, if you can believe it, she told us about when God sent Moses behind the enemy lines to rescue the Israelites from the Egyptians. When they came to the Red Sea, Moses called for the engineers to build a pontoon bridge. After they crossed, they looked back and saw the Egyptian tanks coming. Quick as a flash, Moses radioed headquarters on his walkie-talkie to send bombers to blow up the bridge and save the Israelites.” “Buddy,” exclaimed his startled grandmother, “is that really the way your teacher told the story?” “Well, not exactly. But if I told it her way, you’d never believe it!” When in doubt, pray – God will always listen and you can expect an answer. There are 168 hours in each week and attending church only takes about one hour. When you see the red Spyder roadster ramble by, wave hello. Fred Lee and Family

Music awards presented at Canajoharie High School Concert

by Elizabeth A. Tomlin Canajoharie High students presented their Spring Concert on June 6, at the Arkell Performing Arts Center, with Mr. Leo Milman directing the George Vosburgh Memorial Bell Choir in ‘My Favorite Things’, ‘Over the Rainbow’ and the ‘Theme from Ice Castles’. During the performance Milman introduced the 2013 senior class members, including Melissa Bowley, Catie Corrigan, Seth Ferguson, Ashley Oeser, Katherine Rockwell, Nick Sitterly, Jodie Streath, Rosemary Trahan, and Adam Vroman, which make up over half of the Bell Choir. Milman commented on the impact losing the seniors will have on the Bell Choir. Milman also directed the High School Orchestra, which performed selections from Abba’s ‘Mamma Mia’, the ‘Russian Sailors’ Dance’ and ‘Alla Rustica, first

movement.” Milman presented senior Rosemary Trahan with National School Orchestra Award for her ability, achievement, cooperation and dedication to the orchestra. Chorus instructor, Mr. Nicholas Anker, led the Canajoharie High School Chamber Choir, with Mrs. Norma Bowley as accompanist, in ‘Salmo 150’, It Don’t Mean a Thing if it Ain’t Got Swing’ and ‘Shut de Do’. The Chamber Choir gentleman sang their rendition of the Beach Boys 60’s classic ‘Barbara Ann’, while the ladies sang ‘Prayer of the Children’ and ‘Lift Thine Eyes to the Mountains’. Anker also led the large High School Chorus — numbering 83 students — in ‘Who Are the Brave’, ‘Sing Alleluia Canon’, ‘Corner of the Sky’, and Elton John’s ‘Crocodile Rock’. Anker awarded senior Melissa Bowley, who is also the 2013 Class Valedictorian, the National School Choral Award in recognition of her “singular merit” and “outstanding contributions to the success of the school vocal program.”

Whatchamacallits This item, a beehive string dispenser, is a handy and tangle-free way to store balls of string. The dispenser allows the string to be pulled out steadily with no snags. The concept is similar to a yarn dispenser, which knitters use to keep their yarn unrolling and to save them from the time spent tugging and unwinding the ball of yarn. Beehive dispensers were once an integral part of American capitalism. Before tape or modern packaging, mercantiles and department stores would secure customer’s items by tying the packages with string. Butcher shops did the same, winding the string around parcels of meat. These dispensers were once as common to check-out lines

as credit card readers are today. ~~ Have your own Whatchamacallit? Send pic-

ture and description to eenger@leepub.com. Visit our Facebook page each week to see if you can figure out what the upcoming Whatchamacallit is!

Why shoud I be careful about the food I eat? Montgomery County Public Health wants to remind the public that fresh fruits and vegetables can carry germs that cause severe illness. You can protect yourself from many infections by preparing them properly. Germs in food and water can cause diarrhea, upset stomach, vomiting, stomach cramps, fever, headaches, muscle pain and bloodstream infections. Raw fruits and vegetables are safe to eat if you wash them carefully first. To avoid illness: • Purchase produce that is not bruised or damaged. • Wash hands with warm soap and water for at least 20 seconds before and after handling fresh fruits and vegetables. • Clean all surfaces and utensils with hot water and soap, including cutting boards, counter tops, peelers and knives that will touch fresh fruits or vegetables before and after food preparation. • Thoroughly wash all fresh fruits and vegetables under running tap water. Even if you plan to peel the produce before eating, it is still important to wash it first. Packaged fruits and vegetables labeled “ready to eat”, “washed” or “triple washed” do not usually require washing, however it is a good practice to thoroughly wash anything fresh you will be consuming. When selecting fresh cut produce such as a half a

watermelon or bagged mixed salad greens – choose only those that are refrigerated or surrounded by ice. • Rub firm-skin fruits and vegetables under running tap water or scrub with a clean vegetable brush while rinsing with running tap water. •Dry fruits and vegetables with a clean cloth towel or paper towel. • Never use detergent or bleach to wash fresh fruits or vegetables. Raw Sprouts carry a risk of foodborne illness. Unlike other fresh produce, seeds need warm and humid conditions to sprout and grow. However, these conditions are also ideal for the growth of bacteria, including Salmonella, Listeria, and E. Coli. Rinsing sprouts first will NOT remove bacteria. Homegrown sprouts also present a health risk if they are eaten raw or lightly cooked. Cooking thoroughly will kill the bacteria. Request that raw sprouts not be added to your food when eating out. Most juices sold in the USA are processed or pasteurized to kill harmful bacteria. There are some juices that are not, and they have special labeling.

15th Annual Violet Festival

by Katie Ranno The quiet town of Dolgeville recently turned into the epicenter of the annual, weekend-long Violet Festival. Streets were crowded with fair goers as they came to join the festivities that included a parade stretching the length of main street, a live band playing covers of the classics we all know and love, and street vendors that were in abundance. The reason for naming this annual summer celebration the Violet Festival is due to past Dolgeville resident Lindon Lyons. He grew African violets and was the first to invent the double pink violet. For many, the Violet Festival is an event they attend annually. Bethany Haas comes to the event every year saying, “I love the small town of Dolgeville and it’s traditions.” Local resident Rachel Hall adds that she enjoys seeing all the vendors and get-

ting to see people in the community. Scott Congdon also likes to see all of the happenings going on in town. His brother Adam in the parade as a member of West Canada High’s marching band. Siblings Jeremy and Abigail Gies like to come to the fair for the amazing food and to represent the Herkimer County Ham Radio Club. Local food and craft vendors are also a plus and are one of the main attractions during the three day event. Vendors’ products ranged from handbags to jewelry and even to desserts like those made by home-based company Fudge by Angels, marking this year as their first appearance at the festival. Audrey Armstrong and her sister Rebecca Olejarczyk lost their mom to cancer in 2005, leaving behind her angels and her delicious fudge recipe. In August of 2012,

Pat Scott and her daughter Johanna participate in the Violet Festival Committee’s basket raffle. All proceeds go to making the annual festival possible.

Local resident and 2nd time Violet Festival vendor Kim shows off some of her homemade headbands. Photos by Katie Ranno Audrey and Rebecca decided to share their mom’s recipe with others, making delicious fudge flavors that include chocolate coconut, vanilla caramel, chocolate peppermint, orange chocolate, and apple cinnamon. Fellow vendor and local resident Kim also has personal reasons for starting her homegrown business Headbands by Kim.

“My daughter loves headbands, and I found that it was cheaper to make them by hand.” Kim’s business has been going strong for four years and has branched out into making adorable tutus. The Violet Festival is organized and fundraised by the Violet Festival Committee, and, year after year, is enjoyed by all.

Mother and Daughter team, Pat and and Regan Haberak run a booth to help support their Relay for Life team “Hand in Hand.” The team has been a part of Dolgeville’s annual cancer awareness walk for the past three years and is a team made up of families and friends.

Troop 18’s Annual Chicken BBQ

This past weekend, many came out to support Dolgeville’s Troop 18 Boy Scouts as they put on their annual chicken barbecue. According to the troop committee’s chairperson, Bill Reimer, this is the troop’s 25th annual BBQ. Committee member Andrew Little says this is their best fundraiser of the year, with the money going toward equipment needed for the troop and also for activities that take place throughout the year. People were all smiles as they sat

down to enjoy the smorgasbord set out by the troop. The meal included salad, salt potatoes, cake, and the highly anticipated barbecue chicken grilled right on the spot. Many of the troop leaders and scouts took the time to serve at their fundraiser and greet the community. The troop has been a part of Dolgeville since its establishment in 1929 and holds community as its center. Troop leaders teach their scouts the sense of community by cleaning the

Lyme Disease Advisory Montgomery County Public Health wants to remind everyone that Lyme Disease is caused by the bite of a deer tick. You can reduce the likelihood of a tick bite by taking steps to protect yourself if you live in or visit areas with Lyme Disease activity. In tick-infested areas, your best protection is to avoid contact with soil, leaf litter and vegetation. However, if you garden, hike, camp, hunt, work or otherwise spend time in the outdoors, you can still protect yourself: • Wear light-colored clothing with a tight weave to spot ticks easily. • Wear enclosed shoes, long pants and a long-sleeved shirt. Tuck pant legs into socks or boots and shirt into pants. • Check clothes and any exposed skin frequently for ticks while outdoors. • Consider using insect repellent (Follow appropriate precautions and product instructions when using these products). • Stay on cleared, well-traveled trails. Walk in the center of trails. Avoid dense woods and bushy areas. • Avoid sitting directly on the ground or on stonewalls. • Keep long hair tied back, especially when gardening. • Bathe or shower as soon as possible after going indoors (preferably within two hours) to wash off and more easily find

ticks that may be on you. • Do a final, fullbody tick check at the end of the day (also check children and pets), and remove ticks promptly. Anyone who has been bitten by a tick should be watched closely for at least 30 days. Typical symptoms of Lyme disease include: fever, headache, fatigue, and a large, expanding skin rash that may have a bull's-eye appearance. If left untreated, infection can spread to joints, the heart, and the nervous system. Anyone who develops a fever or a rash after being bitten by a tick or spending time in tick-infested areas should seek prompt medical care. Most patients with Lyme disease can be treated successfully with a few weeks of antibiotics, especially if treated early. Lyme disease prevention begins with recognizing the risks and taking action. For more information on Lyme disease, please visit www.cdc.gov/Lyme.

If you want to truly understand something, try to change it. -Kurt Lewin

To cut to the chase, the plates were priced at only a couple of dollars each, despite the fact that most had cost much more when first purchased. With that in mind,

Q: My dad was quite a marbles player when he was a child, and I recently found a small bag of his special sulfides, tiger-eyes and swirls stashed away in a little leather pouch. Any value other than sentimental? — Carl, Durango, CO A: Bill Blair — owner of Blair Collectibles, a company that buys, sells and appraises marbles — is especially interested in machine marbles made since the 1930s and handmade ones that date prior to 1915. He cautions that values have declined in recent years. Contact him at P.O. Box 655, Pine Hill, NY 12465; blaircol@aol.com; and 845-254-4717. Q: My grandparents recently gave me a set of china, the Brittany pattern, made by Homer Laughlin and Company. I would like to know about when it was made. — Barbara, Wheatridge, CO A: The Brittany pattern was issued during the spring of 1936. According to information from “The Collector’s Encyclopedia of Homer Laughlin China: Reference and Value Guide” by Joanne Jasper and published by Collector Books, this pattern was popular and continued to be issued until the early 1950s. Collecting by Larry Cox White House Cookbook Q: I have a copy of the White House cookbook that was published during the administration of President Grover Cleveland in 1887. It was issued by the F.I. Gillette Publishing Company and is quite interesting. — Ella, Pembroke, Ontario, Canada A: Most of the White House cookbooks have distinctive white covers and sell for about $35 to $50 each, depending on both condition and edition. Q: My uncle worked at Coca-Cola throughout the 1940s

and ‘50s. He saved promotional products, and they now fill six large boxes. I don’t know what we should do with this collection. Any advice? — Sue, Rio Rancho, NM A: I would begin by contacting the CocaCola Collectors Club, which has thousands of members scattered throughout the United States. The addresses are PMB 609, 4780 AshfordDunwoody Road, Suite A, Atlanta, GA 30338; and cocacolaclub.org. There also are several excellent price guides available at www.amazon.com. Calendar of Events joharie Senior Citizens Meeting. JUN 15 Free Clothing Giveaway Valley Alliance Church, State Highway 5, east of Nelliston. Sat. from 9-11 am. Doors open at 8:45 am. Refreshments will be provided. JUN 22 Rabies Clinic Canajoharie Fire Dept., Erie Blvd., Canajoharie, NY. 9-11 am. NYS Public Health Law requires that all dogs, cats and domes-

tic ferrets shall have initial vaccinations administered against rabies no later than 4 months of age and stay up to date with re-vaccinations. Revaccinations are required one year later & a booster shot every 3 years. It is important to have pets vaccinated in a timely manner in order for the pet to be considered protected against the virus. Pet owners should bring proof of their pet’s last rabies vaccination. This helps the veterinarian determine whether the pet will receive a one or

three year vaccination; without it your pet will receive a 1 year vaccination only. To assure the safety of other pets and people; dogs must be leashed; cats and ferrets must be contained in a pet carrier or box when attending the rabies clinic. Veterinarian administration fee is $10/Rabies Vaccine. The June 22, clinic is offered free of charge to Montgomery County residents only, but open to everyone. Suggested donation is $10. Contact Montgomery County Public Health, 518-853-3531. JUL 1-5 Christian Lake Bible Conference Pastor Brett Popp of the

ATV Safety Messages From the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Like other activities involving high speeds and heavy machinery, riding an ATV can be risky. To help stay safe, follow common sense safety tips. Take knowledge to the extreme and learn more about these important tips for safer riding: • Take a hands-on safety training course. Formal training teaches drivers how to control ATVs in typical situations. Drivers with formal, hands-on ATV training have a lower injury risk than drivers with no formal training. • Always wear protective gear – especially a helmet – when rid-

ing ATVs. Many ATV injuries are head injuries. Wearing a helmet may reduce the severity of these injuries. Select a motorcycle or other motorized sports helmet and make sure the helmet is certified by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and/or the Snell Memorial Foundation. In addition, wear overthe-ankle boots, goggles, gloves, long pants, and a longsleeved shirt to protect against cuts, abrasions, and other injuries from rocks, trees, and other debris. • Do not drive ATVs with a passenger or ride as a passenger. The majority of ATVs

are designed to carry only one person. ATVs are designed for interactive riding — drivers must be able to shift their weight freely in all directions, depending on the situation and terrain. Interactive riding is critical to maintaining safe control of an ATV especially on varying terrain. Passengers can make it difficult for drivers to control the ATV. • Do not drive ATVs on paved roads. ATVs — because of how they’re made — are difficult to control on paved roads. Collisions with cars and other vehicles also can be deadly. Many fatalities involving ATVs occur on paved roads.

• Do not permit children to drive or ride adult ATVs. Children are involved in about onethird of all ATV-related deaths and hospital emergency room injuries. Most of these deaths and injuries occur when a child is driving or riding on an adult ATV. Children under 16 on adult ATVs are twice as likely to be injured as those riding youth ATVs. • Do not drive ATVs while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Alcohol and drugs impair reaction time and judgment, two essential skills for safe ATV use.

Under Pressure? Tips for tires Tires are the critical connection between your car and the road in all sorts of driving conditions. To maximize tire life and safety, check the condition and inflation pressure regularly and have the tires rotated and balanced, says the Car Care Council. Pressure: Correct tire pressure is good to your wallet and the environment as properly inflated tires can improve gas mileage by three percent. Underinflated tires are under stress and wear uneven, causing them to be replaced sooner. Alignment: If your car is shaking or pulling to one side it could be a sign of an

alignment issue. Because uneven or accelerated tire wear may indicate an alignment problem, it’s a good idea to have your car’s alignment checked at least once a year. Rotation: Unless your car manual has a specific recommendation, the Car Care Council recommends having tires rotated every 6,000 miles to promote uniform tire wear. Unbalanced wheels can cause rapid wear of shock absorbers and struts, and wheel balance can change as a result of normal tire wear. Rotating the tires to keep their sizes equal is critical on full-size four-

wheel drive vehicles as a difference of only 1/4 inch between the outside circumference of the front and rear tires can cause expensive damage. Replacing all four tires at the same time, rather than just the front or rear tires, is highly recommended for these vehicles. Tread: Use the penny test and visually inspect tires for sign of uneven wear. If the tread depth falls below the minimum legal requirement or the sidewalls become severely cracked or punctured, tire replacement may be necessary. “It only takes five minutes to check tire pressure and stay

safer on the road,” said White. “For more information on service interval schedules, questions to ask a technician and tips to drive smart and save money, check out the free digital Car Care Guide online at www.carcare.org/car-careguide.” The Car Care Council is the source of information for the “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers. For a copy of the council’s Car Care Guide or for more information, visit www.carcare. org.

by Donna Erickson S’mores are treat that can’t be beat Vacations are excellent memory-makers. Along with hiking, biking and swimming, eating togeth-

er can provide unforgettable family moments. Take, for instance, the time one of my sons created his stupendous summer s’mores stackup contest — squishing

those gooey, toasted marshmallows between milk chocolate and graham crackers and stacking them as high as they can go in 30 seconds. The highest stack wins! I never won, and it was probably because I never got past the chocolate. New tips and ideas come out of good memories. Here are a few to add to your campfire traditions: Campfire s’mores hand protectors When roasting marshmallows over a campfire, a disposable foil pie plate on each stick can provide some protection against the heat from the coals. Poke a hole in the middle of a large or small disposable foil pie plate and insert it onto the middle of a toasting stick. To identify one another’s toasting sticks, children can decorate their pie plate with fun designs and their name or initials. Use non-

toxic permanent paint pens. Or, simply poke holes into a large pie plate to create your favorite constellations that may be revealed through the firelight. Tip: After preparing a meal on a backyard grill, roast marshmallows over the coals just as you would do at a campfire. New creations Challenge one another to create your own recipe. To get you started, here are a couple of my favorite twists inspired by recipes from Hershey’s. Peanut Butter S’mores — Spread a thin layer of peanut butter on half of a graham cracker, and top with half of a milk-chocolate bar, a toasted marshmallow and half of a graham cracker. Vary it by adding banana slices. Apricot Coconut S’mores — Spread a thin layer of apricot jam on half of a cinnamon graham cracker. Add a

sprinkle of coconut. Top with milk-chocolate bar, a toasted marshmallow and half of another cinnamon graham cracker. Black Forest S’mores — Spread a thin layer of cherry-pie filling on half of a chocolate graham cracker topped with a Hershey’s Special Dark Semi-Sweet Chocolate

bar, another layer of pie filling and a toasted marshmallow. (c) 2013 Donna Erickson Distributed by King Features Synd.

(NAPSI) — Basic car care is the key to a longlasting vehicle, and to improving its safety and dependability. What to do Ten basic maintenance procedures can help keep your car operating at its best for the long haul: 1. Check all fluids, including engine oil, power steering, brake and transmission as well as windshield washer solvent, antifreeze and coolant. 2. Check the hoses and belts to make sure they’re not cracked, brittle, frayed, loose or showing signs of excessive wear. 3. Check the battery and replace if necessary. Make sure the connec-

tion is clean, tight and corrosion-free. 4. Check the brake system annually and have the brake linings, rotors and drums inspected at each oil change. 5. Inspect the exhaust system for leaks, damage and broken supports or hangers if there’s an unusual noise. Exhaust leaks can be dangerous and must be corrected without delay. 6. Schedule a tune-up to help the engine deliver the best balance of power and fuel economy and produce the lowest level of emissions. 7. Check the heating, ventilating and air-conditioning (HVAC) system as proper heating and cooling performance is critical for interior com-

fort and for safety reasons such as defrosting. 8. Inspect the steering and suspension system annually including shock absorbers, struts and chassis parts such as ball joints, tie-rod ends and other related components. 9. Check the tires, including tire pressure and tread. Uneven wear may indicate the need for wheel alignment. Tires should also be checked for bulges and bald spots. 10. Check the wipers and lighting so you can see and be seen. Check that all interior and exterior lighting is working properly and replace worn wiper blades so you can see clearly when driving during precipitation.

Take care of your car now so you don’t have to pay for repairs later.

“Neglected vehicle care almost always means much higher costs down the line in the form of more extensive repairs or lost resale value,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “Following a routine

maintenance program makes financial sense, extending useful vehicle life and helping avoid costly repairs down the road.” The Car Care Council is the source of information for the “Be Car Care

Aware” consumer education campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers. For further information, visit www.carcare.org.

Everything gets old-even your shocks drivers tend to miss the gradual loss of steering, stopping and stability that occurs as they wear out,” says Carri Irby, brand manager for Monroe shocks and struts manufacturer Tenneco Inc. “So it’s important to have the vehicle’s ride control system inspected at least once a year and to replace worn shocks and struts at 50,000 miles.” (Actual mileage may vary depending on driver ability, vehicle type and driving and road conditions, according to Irby.) Shocks and struts are part of a system of interrelated under-car compo-

nents known as the “Safety Triangle.” Other elements of this system are the tires, brakes and chassis parts, such as ball joints and tie rod ends. When any of these parts is worn, the entire system can be compromised, leading to a loss of steering precision, stopping performance and overall vehicle stability in a variety of driving situations. To reinforce this important safety message, the Monroe brand recently launched an extensive North American marketing campaign titled “Everything Gets Old. Even Your Shocks.” The

campaign contrasts these vital but often overlooked vehicle components with worn everyday items that most consumers replace on a more frequent basis — shoes, toothbrushes, batteries, and even tires. “It’s vital to understand that while you might not be able to see them without getting down on your hands and knees, shocks and struts take an incredible beating and they do get old,” said Irby. “Protect your safety by asking your vehicle service provider for a ride control inspection and, if your shocks and struts are worn out, have them replaced.”

(PICK UP AVAILABLE) To help stay safe on the road, have your car’s shocks and struts inspected by a professional — and if they’re worn out, have them replaced. (NAPSI) — Look around your home and you’ll probably see a few important items you are planning to replace — a tattered chair, those old running shoes, the living room wallpaper.

There are also important parts on your vehicle that need to be replaced when they get old — including your shock absorbers and struts. But replacing them is more than just a matter of

keeping your vehicle fresh — it can also help keep you and your family safe. “Shocks and struts are hidden behind the wheels, so their condition isn’t as easy to see, and

Buying a car? Here’s what you should know If you are thinking about buying or leasing a car, there’s a lot to consider before you make a final decision. First, you need to decide what type of car will fit your needs and your budget. With so many choices available in the car market, setting a budget first helps you narrow down your search based on what you can afford. Other important considerations include safety measures, fuel economy, and the credibility of the dealer or individual selling you the car. Use these tips from USA.gov to help in your search: • Safety: Many tests are done on car safety before any vehicles hit the roads. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety are just two places you can check on a car’s safety rating and features. You can also find out from NHTSA if a vehicle has been recalled for safety defects. • Title: If you’re buying from an individual seller, it is important to check on the title to make sure you

are working with the actual vehicle owner. You can check on the title with your local Better Business Bureau. Just enter your zip code, and you’ll find an office to assist you. If you’re buying from a dealer, you can check on their credibility with your local consumer affairs office. • Leasing: If you are considering leasing a car, make sure you ask the dealer for all of the financial information up front, including details on wear and tear standards, if there is a limit on how many miles you can drive a year, the manufacturer’s warranty and more. • Financing: Whether you’re leasing or buying a car, most people have to do some type of financing. Two common types are direct lending or dealership financing. It’s important to do your research so you know which type of financing is right for you. The Federal Trade Commission explains your options and defines financing lingo so you can be prepared.

Top driver distractions Distracted driving can be very dangerous. Diverting one's attention from the road for mere seconds can have serious, and potentially fatal, consequences. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have found distracted driving kills more than 15 people each day while injuring more than 1,200. Any activity that takes attention away from driving is considered a distraction. These include taking your hands off the wheel, daydreaming or engaging in any behavior that takes your eyes off of the road. Certain activities are known distractions, and understanding which habits can be dangerous and making strides to correct behaviors can help save lives, prevent injuries and reduce accident-related expenses. A study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute indicates 80 percent of crashes and 65 percent of near-crashes in the United States involve some form of driver distraction. This distraction took place a mere three seconds before the vehicle crash. An Allstate Canada marketing survey of 1,605 Canadian adults found that, although the vast majority of Canadians thinks driving while distracted is unaccept-

able, nearly three out of four Canadian drivers admits to engaging in a behavior that is considered a distraction. That is perhaps in part because drivers are not aware just how distracting some the following behaviors truly are. Using mobile phones Leading the list of the top distractions behind the wheel are mobile phones. Phones now do more than just place calls, and drivers often cannot pull away from their phones, even when driving. According to the California Department of Motor Vehicles, studies have shown that driving performance is lowered and the level of distraction is higher for drivers who are heavily engaged in cell phone conversations. The use of a handsfree device does not lower distraction levels. The percentage of vehicle crashes and near-crashes attributed to dialing is nearly identical to the number associated with talking or listening. Accident rates have increased thanks to texting, which involves a person taking his or her hands and eyes off of the road. A 2009 study by Car and Driver magazine compared the dangers of texting while driving to the effects of driving drunk to see which would be more dangerous under the same conditions.

Measuring the time it takes to brake after being alerted by a red light to stop, the reaction time was recorded when the driver was legally drunk, reading an e-mail and sending a text. Texting easily elicited the slowest response time. Ironically, in January 2011, Texas man Chance Bothe drove off of a cliff after texting that he had to stop texting or risk dying in a car accident. Bothe survived but sustained significant injuries and had to be revived from death three times. Moving objects Whether there's a pet bouncing in the front seat or children being boisterous in the back, passengers and items moving around the car are significant distractions. Turning around to look at the kids or to reach for a ball that may be rolling around on the floor of the car can take a person's eyes off the road. If something really is important and needs to be addressed, it is much safer to pull over and take care of it before getting back on the road. Daydreaming Many people will admit to daydreaming behind the wheel or looking at a person or object outside of the car for too long. Perhaps they're checking out a house in a new neighborhood or thought they saw someone they

knew on the street corner. It can be easy to veer into the direction your

to be taken off of the wheel and their eyes to be diverted from the road.

tisement, updating a Facebook status or reading a book are all activi-

eyes are focused, causing an accident. In addition to trying to stay focused on the road, some drivers prefer the help of lane departure warning systems. Eating Those who haven't quite mastered walking and chewing gum at the same time may want to avoid eating while driving. The majority of foods require a person's hands

Reaching in the back seat to share some French fries with the kids is also distracting. Try to eat meals before getting in the car. For those who must snack while en route, take a moment to pull over at a rest area and spend 10 minutes snacking there before resuming the trip. Reading Glancing at an adver-

ties that should be avoided when driving. Even pouring over a traffic map or consulting the digital display of a GPS system can be distracting. When driving, attention should be placed on the task of safely getting from point A to point B. All other activities taking place in the vehicle are distractions that can end up risking a person's life.

The Kitchen Diva by Angela Shelf Medearis Have a happy and healthy vacation Summer months are the perfect time to squeeze in a family vacation. Too often, however, we return from our travels feeling exhausted and weary from an “unfit” vacation. The reasons are many: overeating, trying to log too many miles, sporadic sleep schedules and too little exercise. Here are a few tips on how to combine fun activities and healthful eating habits to help you and your family feel great, both on your trip and after your return home. • Pack some healthful snacks for car travel. A small cooler or ice chest works great to keep beverages and perishable items cool and tasty.

Popcorn, pretzels, fresh or dried fruit, yogurt cups, bagels, vegetable sticks, 100 percent fruit juice, whole-grain crackers and string cheese are all satisfying and healthy snack choices. • If you’re traveling by plane, drink plenty of fluids before, during and after your flight. Minimize any beverages containing caffeine or alcohol, since these can dehydrate you. Bring your own bottle of water on board, if permitted. • Stick with lower fat or light meals, and plan in advance if possible by either eating before getting on the road or stopping somewhere with choices other than just fast food. Try not to skip meals; you’ll be less likely to overeat later in the day.

• Restaurant eating can become monotonous and costly, and kids might not always appreciate the unfamiliar menu options. Why not make a quick trip to the grocery store to pick up low-sugar breakfast cereal, fruit, milk and bagels for an easy nutritious meal you can put together anywhere.

three cups of milk, yogurt and cheese. For nutritious convenience, bring along grated cheese to add to spaghetti, tacos and burritos; dried milk to add to pancake mix; fluid milk for cereal; and yogurt for snacks. Here are some tips for staying active while on the road:

• If you’re camping, plan for healthful meals in advance. Think of MyPlate and include a variety of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, protein and dairy with a long shelf-life, along with products that don’t require refrigeration.

• Whether you’re camping or staying at a resort, take advantage of the great outdoors and go on a nature walk or hike with the entire family. See who can spot the largest variety of birds along the way. You’ll reap the benefits of fitness and each other’s company.

• Help your family meet their daily calcium requirements — about

• Take along sports equipment for the entire family. A badminton or

croquet set, a volleyball or Frisbee, snorkeling gear (for any nearby water attractions) and tennis racquets, all of which add up to fun and exercise. • Ask your children to plan an activity the entire family can do while on vacation: a kickball game, catch, relay games or tag. • Plan time for exercise — a mid-day bike ride, morning nature walk or afternoon swim at the hotel pool will help you stay on the fitness track. • If you’re booking your vacation at a hotel, be sure and ask about available fitness facilities. Many have a pool for swimming laps, aerobics classes, weight-training equipment and jog-

ging/walking maps surrounding areas.

• Pack exercise clothing, walking or jogging shoes, comfy clothes and a bathing suit. • If you’re doing a lot of driving, bring your bikes and stop for a ride through the countryside. Don’t forget to pack your bike helmets and sports water bottles. You won’t return home feeling the need to take a vacation if you plan ahead for a happy and healthy trip! Factors that might hurt a home’s value Nowadays, homeowners looking to sell their homes know it’s not as easy to do so as it might have been a few years ago. A struggling economy has made it difficult for many homeowners to sell their homes for a price they’re comfortable with. But the sagging economy is not the only thing can make it difficult to sell a home. In fact, a host of other things, some obvious but some not so obvious, can hurt a home’s value as well. • Location: A home’s location is arguably its best or worst selling point. A home in a great location won’t be as difficult to sell as a home in a bad neighborhood. But location goes beyond a neighborhood’s reputation, especially in recent years. Homeowners who live in a neighborhood or development with many foreclosures might find those foreclosed properties are hurting their own home’s value. Lots of foreclosures

could negatively affect a neighborhood’s reputation, which might make a home within that neighborhood less attractive to prospective buyers. • Appearance: A home’s appearance is another obvious variable that might affect its resale value. Homeowners might want their home to reflect their own individuality, but that’s not going to help when the time comes to sell the home. If the exterior paint is out of the ordinary, then it might be wise to choose a more traditional or conservative color before erecting the “For Sale” sign out front. The same goes for a home’s interior. If the interior design is especially unique, a more traditional interior decor might help the home sell faster. • Size and style: Another thing to consider when selling a home is its size and style. A home that stands out on the block might be an attentiongrabber, but that’s not al-

ways attractive to prospective buyers. For instance, a colonial sitting in the middle of a street filled with contemporary homes will stand out, but likely for all the wrong reasons. It will likely appear dated and out of place, which is something buyers might not want. In addition, if the home is considerably larger or smaller than the surrounding homes, then this could hurt its value. • Non-conformity: In many ways, conformity is not considered an admirable trait. But when selling a home, conformity could make the difference between a home selling quickly or remaining on the market for months if not years. When shopping for a home, buyers often shop in certain neighborhoods and towns and might see many different homes within a given ZIP code. Homeowners with homes that don’t conform to others in the area might find it difficult to sell their homes. For instance, homeowners trying to sell a two bedroom home in a neighborhood filled with three bedroom homes might notice their home’s value is not as high as that of surrounding homes, regardless of the neighborhood or how similar the home’s exterior is to surrounding homes. • Age: Older homes

might have character and a sense of nostalgia, but appraisers take age into consideration when determining a home’s value. And buyers tend to lean to-

ward newer homes for a number of reasons, not the least of which is the feeling that newer homes have far more modern amenities than older homes.

When it comes to a home’s value, there are a host of things that could ultimately increase or decrease that value in the eyes of prospective buyers.

Camping is a popular outdoor activity that attracts many enthusiasts year after year. Some people camp every month while others only have time for one great excursion into the wilderness each year. This year, millions of camping trips will take place across the country. Preparation is key to a successful camping trip. Whether campers plan to spend one night or several in the great outdoors, there are certain tips to follow to ensure your trip is as fun and safe as possible. Gear In order to be comfortable, stock up on camping gear. Tents, sleeping bags and other gear need not be the most expensive. Quality, moderately priced gear works well, too. With care and maintenance, camping gear can last for several years. A tent will be your first line of defense against the outdoors. Although plenty of people prefer to sleep out under the stars, a tent is a place to avoid inclement weather and insects and have a little privacy. Your tent need not be too big, unless you plan to share it with

many of your fellow campers. Since you will be spending the majority of your time outdoors, don’t feel pressured to buy the tent equivalent of a three-room suite. A good tent should be sturdy, weather-resistant and large enough to fit the people who will be sleeping in it during your trip. Invest in a pad to place on the floor of the tent to shield you from the hard ground. The pad will make sleeping more comfortable. If you will be sleeping during warmweather months, you don’t have to worry about an expensive sleeping bag. An average-weight one will be just fine. Don’t forget to pack a pillow. A cooler filled with foods and drinks will tide you over for the trip. If you plan to cook, you will need to bring the ingredients for meals. Otherwise sandwiches should suffice. Some campgrounds have grills and picnic tables available. Otherwise, you can cook hot dogs right over your open campfire. Where to camp Campsites may be public or private. Public campgrounds are gener-

ally funded by tax dollars and maintained by parks departments or government offices. They may be free to enter or charge a nominal fee for use. Because of the low cost involved, they may be quite popular and crowded during peak camping season. Private campsites are run by private companies or individuals and may also feature RV hookups. In many instances, private campsites sell memberships to interested parties, which gives access to certain private areas. They may have more amenities than public campsites. Private sites also may employ security personnel and maintenance crews to ensure the areas are clean and safe and to enforce campground rules. This may not be the case at public campsites, where conditions may be inconsistent from site to site. An online search of both public and private campsites nearby can help you determine which option best suits you. Consider national parks, national forests and even the Army Corps of Engineers, which manages

many recreational areas. Avoid critters Animals and insects are part of the camping experience. While they are unavoidable, there are some measures you can take to reduce the propensity for bothersome bug bites or clever critters raiding the cooler. Keeping a clean campsite is perhaps the most effective animal and insect deterrent. Ants and animals are attracted to food bits scattered around the site, so be sure to gather trash and dispose of it properly each day. Try not to store food on the ground. Whenever possible, keep food locked away in an airtight cooler or other container. Dry foods can be stored under lock and key in the car. Racoons, squirrels, birds, and skunks all have been known to patrol campgrounds for an easy meal. Also, you don’t want to lure in larger predators, such as bears or wild cats. To avoid insects, steer clear of perfumed products. Keep lights dim at night, as bright lights attract mosquitoes and other biting bugs. Use appropriate insect repellents to

help further repel bugs. Closer isn’t always better Many new campers make the mistake of choosing campsites that are in close proximity to bathrooms and clubhouses and other reminders of civilization. But these areas tend to feature heavy foot and car traffic and can make for a noisy experience. To avoid the lights, sounds and bustle of too many people, stick with campsites farther off the beaten path. You may need to walk a little farther, but you will likely enjoy a more peaceful camping experience. Plan for the wetness Even if it doesn’t rain, dew is an inevitable part of camping outdoors. Warm weather with high

humidity can make dew even more plentiful. Use a shower curtain or another plastic impenetrable liner beneath your tent to reduce wetness and chilliness while you sleep. Be sure to bring in clothes and remove items from your clotheslines before you retire for the night if you don’t want them damp the next morning. Use tarps to cover anything that should not get wet. Be sure to pack plenty of dry socks and changes of clothes and store them in zipper-top bags in the event clothing does get wet. Wet clothes can be uncomfortable and increase your risk for hypothermia. Carry in and carry out Part of the magic of camping is being able to enjoy nature and experience the great outdoors. It is crucial to protect natural landscapes as much as possible and to exercise caution around plant life. In addition, be mindful of animal habitats. What you bring to the campsite, including trash, should be removed when you are done. Do not leave a mess behind. Camping can be an enjoyable and inexpensive vacation option. Learning the ropes and heeding some advice can make camping an enjoyable getaway year after year.
