Salutations, Sweet summertime is here. Every now and then, bad things happen, people get sick, injured or we lose someone. When you work in an office, a group card is usually passed for everyone to sign. I kind of dread those cards, because I am always about the 10th person in line to get the card and all the terms of endearment, good will and best wishes have already been expressed. This happened to me just last summer. I looked at the card and said, you know what, I am going to tell this guy a story. I know if I were sitting in a hospital not feeling well, I would like to be thinking about being somewhere else, doing something else. The following was my card to my coworker who was, and still is, battling cancer. Hello Friend, I am not sure if you have heard about my bear adventures this summer, but I would like to tell you about them. I started hiking on my dad’s property the first part of June. All summer I have seen deer tracks, turkeys, coyote scat, etc, all very fun and interesting. Then, in the middle of August, people started talking about spotting some black bears in the Hollow. I said, “Boy, I really want to see a bear but I am north of the hollow and up a very steep bank. I did not hold out much hope, but the seed was planted and I was determined. I kept hiking and hiking, making as many trips out back as I could. Then one rather hot Sunday, I was hiking, feeling a little miserable because my legs hurt, that is until I saw a huge pile of scat under a hickory tree. I said to myself that has got to be bear scat. It so happened that when I walked out of the woods, my mom had driven up the hill in her Gator. I said, “Mom let’s go get dad right away! I found bear scat.” She said I was crazy. We went and got my dad and he confirmed that it was bear scat, which made me very happy! Never knew finding bear scat in the woods would make me so happy. While the scat spotting occurred on Sunday, I had other obligations that kept me off the trail until Tuesday. I headed out with my three dogs in tow, Annie, French Louie, and Onyx. About half way up the trail, I came across more bear scat, and experienced another surge of excitement. I had no sooner told myself that if I were ever going to see a bear, I’d better look up and not down, when out of the corner of my eye I saw a black flash. It was indeed a bear. It ran down through the woods and crossed the path right in front of me and behind the dogs. I could not

believe what I was seeing and I wanted to see more of it so, clearly without thinking, I ran right after it. Yep, that’s right, I actually chased the bear. The bear was running down a steep hill and disappeared just as fast as it had appeared. The dogs never even saw it or noticed me running after it. It was perWe were lucky enough to get a photo of this fectly silent, unlike myself! I bear with the trail camera. was absolutely thrilled beyond belief to have seen that bear. When I called my dad, he said that was great but advised against chasing it. My dad and I set up some trail cameras and have been checking them pretty regularly. We have about 150 perfect photos of gray squirrels, a few turkeys, a nice eight point, and two bear! The excitement on my dad’s face when he saw the images of the bears was priceless. I make myself remember it often so I will never forget it. He never did see one in person last summer, but came close when he saw some tracks in the dew. I was lucky enough to see a mother and two cubs, and one other black flash. I know right now you are chasing a completely different kind of bear. I think about you often and hope you heal quickly so you can soon chase some whitetail and perhaps even a bear. My coworker is still battling but doing good. I have been very fortunate and this is only the second time I have had to tell a story to get out of signing a card. I hope you can get out and enjoy the sweet summertime and make some memories that you are able to cherish and put in your memory bank in case you ever need to cheer up a friend. Whatchamacallits If you have ever needed the shirt hanging at the very top of the wall display at a department store, you’ve seen this tool. Perhaps you have even used one yourself instead of requesting help from a sales associate. The device pictured here didn’t retrieve clothing, however. It was a blacksmith’s tool. But the concept was still the same. The blacksmith would use it to retrieve horse shoes hanging from his shop ceiling. This particular device is a local piece. It came from the Hambrecht blacksmith shop in Canajoharie. ~~ Have your own Whatchamacallit? Send picture and description to eenger@leepub.com. Visit our Facebook page each week to see if you can figure out what the upcoming Whatchamacallit is!

Water Safety - Enjoy the water but stay healthy Montgomery County Public Health wants to raise awareness about healthy swimming behaviors, including ways to prevent Recreational Water Illnesses (RWIs). RWIs are illnesses spread by swallowing or having contact with contaminated water in swimming pools, water parks, spas, interactive fountains, lakes, rivers, streams, or oceans. Illnesses at aquatic facilities can occur in or out of the water. Recreational Water Illnesses (RWIs) The best way to prevent RWIs is to keep germs out of the pool in the first place. Everyone can help create healthy swimming experiences this

summer by following these six healthy swimming steps: • PLEASE don’t swim when you have diarrhea. • PLEASE don’t swallow pool water. • PLEASE practice good hygiene. Shower with soap before swimming and wash your hands after using the toilet or changing diapers. • PLEASE take your kids on bathroom breaks or check diapers often. • PLEASE change diapers in a bathroom or a diaper-changing area and not at poolside. • PLEASE wash your children thoroughly with soap and water before they go swimming. about healthy swimming, visit: CDC’s Healthy Swimming website at www.cdc.gov/healthysw imming The water at the beach, river or stream looks clean, but is it? You cannot be sure since the water can contain disease-causing microorganisms that you cannot see but can be harmful to you. Different things, such as trash, sewage, or animal waste, can pollute water. Swimming and swallowing unsafe water may result in minor illnesses such as sore throats or diarrhea, or can result in more serious illnesses. Pollution of water is common immediately

after rainstorms or long periods of rainy weather where bodies of water become overflowing and can contaminate each other. • Avoid swimming after a heavy rain • Microorganisms can also lurk on lounge chairs, picnic tables and walkways that have become contaminated with the polluted water, therefore wash your hands with soap and water before eating if you have touched any of these items. For more information about illnesses you can contract from polluted swimming areas, visit: www.cdc.gov/healthywater/swimming/rwi/ill nesses

What questions should I ask when looking at homes? Many of your questions should focus on potential problems and maintenance issues. Does anything need to be replaced? What things require ongoing maintenance? Also ask about the house and neighborhood, focusing on quality of life

issues. Ask questions until you understand all of the information they’ve given. Making a list of questions ahead of time will help you organize your thoughts and arrange all of the information you receive. The HUD Home Scorecard can help you develop your question list. Source: HUD.gov

Protecting your auto repair investment your warranty rights. Service Contracts Many automobile dealers and others sell optional contracts — service contracts — issued by vehicle manufacturers or independent companies. Not all service contracts are the same; prices vary and usually are negotiable. To help decide whether to purchase a service contract, consider: • Its cost. • The repairs to be covered. • Whether coverage overlaps coverage provided by any other warranty. • The deductible. • Where the repairs are to be performed.

What warranties and service contracts apply to vehicle repairs? Warranties There is no “standard warranty” on repairs. Make sure you understand what is covered under your warranty and get it in writing. Warranties may be subject to limitations, including time, mileage, deductibles, businesses authorized to perform warranty work or special procedures required to obtain reimbursement. • Procedures required to file a claim, like prior authorization for specific repairs or meeting required vehicle maintenance schedules. • Whether repair costs are paid directly by the company to the repair shop or whether you will have to pay first and get reimbursed. How do I resolve a dispute regarding billing, quality of repairs or warranties? • Document all transactions as well as your experiences with dates, times,

expenses, and the names of people you dealt with. • Talk to the shop manager or owner first. If that doesn’t work, contact your Attorney General or local consumer protection agency for help. These offices may have information on alternative dispute resolution programs in your community. Another option is to file a claim in small claims court. You don’t need an attorney to do this. You can compare different lease offers and negotiate some terms. Consider... • The agreed-upon value of the vehicle — a lower value can reduce your monthly payment • Up-front payments, including the capitalized cost reduction • The length of the lease • The monthly lease payment • Any end-of-lease fees and charges • The mileage allowed and per-mile charges for excess miles • The option to purchase either at leaseend or earlier Source: www.federalreserve.gov

How can people save money on a new car? 1. You can save thousands of dollars over the lifetime of a car by selecting a model that combines a low purchase price with low financing, insurance, gasoline, maintenance, and repair costs. Ask your local librarian for new car guides that contain this information. 2. Having selected a model, you can save hundreds of dollars by comparison shopping. Call at least five dealers for price quotes, and let each know that you are calling others. 3. Remember there is no “cooling off” period on new car sales. Once you have signed a contract, you are obligated to buy the car. S o u r c e : www.extension.org
