June 8, 2013 Hello Again, Last Christmas-time Santa sent his chief reindeer herd keeper to inform me his entire reindeer herd was off their feed and unable to pull Santa’s sled. He then asked if he could borrow my red Spyder three-wheeled roadster to pull the Christmas present Santa sled. Naturally I was delighted and more than willing to help Santa. The only agreement was that he would bring the Spyder back in good condition. Well — he did but the gas tank was empty. We later learned that Santa drives a big cattle truck during the off-season. This morning I finally caught up with Santa (with his red cattle truck) while he was eating breakfast at a local café. All he said in defense was — what does a little gas amount to in our friendship. Naturally he was right. However, I believe that the red cattle truck is merely a front while he is around checking up on who has been good or bad. I would like to steal his little black book. My oh my, could I be rich. I’m just not that good — he still owes me for a tank of gas. The more I read about our beautiful New York State, the more amazed I become. It has often been said that words are more powerful than swords. Now in the year 2013, it’s interesting to learn that Reverend Francis J. Bellamy was pastor of the first Baptist church in Little Falls, NY from 1879 to 1885. Rev. Bellamy moved to Boston and later left the ministry to join the staff of the “Youth’s Companion,” a popular young people’s magazine of the era. The year 1892 would mark the 400th year of the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus. As part of a 400th year celebration, Rev. Bellamy was challenged to compose a suitable pledge. Bellamy worked most of the night on this assignment and submitted the following to his publisher: “I pledge allegiance to my flag and to the republic for which it stands for. One nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” More recently, the words “under God,” were included by an act of Congress. “I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” Could we even hope to estimate the millions of times this pledge has been spoken and the power and love it represents? One nation under God — a republic. Not a Godless, socialist nation. This pledge pictures the America we love and respect as is. We should pledge respect and support, not attempt to change. Countries such as Russia embrace socialism and strive to stamp out God. Would you choose to have your children or grandchildren live there? In an earlier Hello Again we addressed the speeding problem of our local sheriff patrols. If we — the local resident drivers — mimic the sheriff departments lead and also exceed the state speed limit, the only vehicles they will be able to catch will be the horse drawn buggies.

A leading world humorist, Will Rogers, said “I don’t create funny stories about our government. I just read the newspapers and repeat the facts.” A cattle dealer-auctioneer, possibly a friend of Santa, died and met St. Peter at the pearly gate. “Sorry, my friend. I know you have powerful friends down on earth but you can’t come in — we have met our quota on auctioneers and cattle dealers.” The auctioneer, not to be outwitted, turned on his loud speaker and said, “Cattle prices were up over 10 percent at the auction down in Hell this morning.” With that, dozens of cattle dealers and a few auctioneers rustled out of Heaven and and climbed on the down elevator. With that, St. Peter said, “There is plenty of room in Heaven for you now.” The dealer-auctioneer, being an opportunist, said “Not now,” to St. Peter. “I better check out the market down below first.” We have solid proof that advertising in our Country Editor paper gets fantastic results. We ran the following ad: Employment opportunity. Good pay. 5 weeks vacation — use of company car. 10 days sick leave and 12 days off for personal needs. Phone in your resume to 315-000-0000. Thirteen of our employees applied for the position. Sometimes it seems to know the truth can only lead to personal depression and unhappiness. So should we hide our heads under a bushel basket and make every effort to not hear or learn the truth? On the other hand, could your medical doctor know how to prescribe proper medication if he refuses to learn the truth about your physical condition and will not take action? Should we, as American citizens, know about the following and not be willing to do something about it? • Back in 1980, the U.S. national debt was less than $1 trillion. Today, it is rapidly approaching $17 trillion. • During our president’s first term, the federal government accumulated more debt than it did under the first 42 U.S. presidents combined. • Back in 1985, our trade deficit with China was approximately $6 million (million with a little “m”) for the entire year. In 2012, our trade deficit was $315 billion. That was the largest trade deficit that one nation has had with another nation in the history of the world. Question: if our governmental leaders are not willing to do something about some of these problems right now, when will they? Is it ever too late to try to clean up a mess? Remember today is yesterday’s tomorrow. Have we made a contribution to our friends and neighbors and family or are we like our governing bodies — hiding our heads under a bushel basket? Wave hello when you see the red Spyder. Let’s mentally join hands to pray for our nation. Fred Lee and Family

Lisa has been confined to a wheelchair since July 2012 due to an infection throughout her body. The infection has caused many other medical issues. She has spent many days in and out of the hospital and has had several surgeries. Lisa needs more medical care to be able to walk again. The high cost of copays has been overwhelming. Lisa has a long road ahead of her for recovery. In the past 10 years she has endured many medical problems. She survived colon cancer (and is now cancer free), she was injured in a car accident, she has had open heart surgery, and she has been a diabetic her whole life. She never complains, is a true fighter and has never asked for help. We ask you to join hands with us, her friends and family, to help Lisa through this difficult time.

St. Johnsville library’s museum open house by Katie Ranno The Margaret Reaney Memorial Library had its official open house this past Memorial Day. Since January of 2012, the museum has been undergoing reorganization and renovation lead by Becky Sokol, Mat Rapacz, and Sharon Fuller, who are all actively involved in the library itself. The museum was originally opened as an addition to the library back in 1937. The museum has held a great deal of history for the town of St. Johnsville, but reorganization and a good cleaning was needed. Sokol, Rapacz, and Fuller went through the decades of collections housed in the museum, categorizing and researching the history of this small picturesque town, starting with the Civil War and going all the way up to World War II and even to the present day. According to Sokol, the museum houses not only the history of St. Johnsville, but also how history has affected this town, and displays on those who have left their stamp on the town. A mock doctor’s office is on display with items from the office of local Dr. Feldstein, which were donated to the museum by his daughter. Local ultra-marathoner John Geesler has donated one of his trophies, a pair of shoes, and even his bandana, making up a nice portion of the museum’s local sports display. The

inventor of the bee smoker, Moses Quimbey, who was a resident of St. Johnsville, is also represented in the collection along with his book, which details the process of beekeeping. As far as the museum’s restoration goes, Library Director Dawn Lamphere says, “They’ve done an outstanding job, and it certainly shows.” She went on to say that the research has “added a fresh interpretation” of the collection. “Absolutely amazing,” says St. Johnsville resident Suzanne Battisti, who has visited the museum many times — even before its current restoration. Joseph, T race, Delton, and Rachel Keba were firsttime visitors to the museum and thought the museum held a lot of interesting stuff to look at. The museum will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, with special hours on Friday nights from 6:30 to 8 and also on Saturday’s from 9:30 to noon. Admission is free but donations are accepted and a tour guide will be on site at all times to offer answers to your questions. Group tours can also be scheduled by calling the library at: 518-568-7822. Also be sure to check out the library’s blog for recent news and events at margaretreaneylibrary.blogspot.com.

Whatchamacallits A carbine is a longarm similar to a rifle but smaller and lighter, which made it a preferred weapon for the cavalry. The carbine snapped into a sliding swivel clip on a wide, over -the-shoulder belt, as shown at right. A leather socket, such as the one held in picture, was strapped near the saddle stirrup to hold the carbine’s muzzle. Near the time of the Civil War, a new type of carbine was developed by Con-necticut native Christopher Spencer. It was called the “Spencer Carbine” or “Spencer Repeating Rifle” and was significant due to its high rate of fire. The Department of War contracted several of these but they were not widely adopted. Lincoln himself tested the rifle but the first two he was sent misloaded! To salvage the reputation of

his invention, Spencer requested an audience with President Lincoln. The two (accompanied by other military personnel) had a shooting match near the place where today’s Washington Memorial stands. Lincoln and advisors also went out a second time the following day. The success of these target practices lead to the increase of the weapon in the Union cavalry. Due to a shortage of copper, the Confederacy had difficulty copying the carbine. However, the tactical advantage of a faster-firing weapon was not yet understood or developed, thus the full advantage was never quite realized. Ironically, Lincoln’s assassin John Wilkes Boothe had a Spencer Carbine on him when he was captured and killed.

guide? I understand they have increased in recent years, and even though I have no plan to sell the ones I have, I am nevertheless curious about current values. — Ken, Springdale, AR A: There are several guides, but my personal favorite is “Heddon Plastic Lures: Identification and Price Guide” by Russell E. Lewis. This excellent guide features lures from the first ones issues by the company in 1924 through the early 1980s. There are 1,500 illustrations in full-color and the values seem to reflect the current marketplace Russell Lewis also is the author of “Classic Fishing Lures,” “Fishing Collectibles: Rods, Reels, Creels and More” and “Heddon Catalogues: Over 50 Years of Great Fishing.” If you love the sport of fishing, you are certain to get hooked on these outstanding guides. Q: I recently found an “I Like Ike” handkerchief in a thrift store that I purchased for $25. I assume it is from the 1952 presidential campaign. What is it worth? — Maryanne, Manhattan, KS

A: About what you paid for it. I consulted several price guides, which indicate the “I Like Ike” handkerchiefs generally sell in the $15 to $25 range. For comparison, the Goldwater handkerchiefs from the 1964 campaign are worth a little less, $10 to $15. Q: I have a solidoak tea cart purchased in 1917. It is in excellent condition. I would like to know its value. — D.L., Sun City, AZ A: There are tea carts ... and there are tea carts, and it is impossible for me to place a value on the one you have. You should consult with antiques dealers in your area. Since you are near Phoenix, there are dozens of good dealers and experts to choose from. Q: I recently inherited a piece of Hull pottery: a flower dish in the Imperial pattern. Is it worth keeping? — Susan, Carlsbad, NM A: According to “Warman’s Hull Pottery: Identification and Price Guide” by David Doyle, your flower dish is worth in the $10 to $20 range. Tips on avoiding or dealing with predatory lending at HUD.gov Over the last several years, our nation has made enormous progress in expanding access to capital for previously under served borrowers. Despite this progress, however, too many families are suffering today because of a growing incidence of abusive practices in a segment of the mortgage lending market. Predatory mortgage lending practices strip borrowers of home equity and threaten families with foreclosure, destabilizing the very communities that are beginning to enjoy the fruits of our nation’s economic success.Protect yourself from predatory lenders: For information about loan fraud and advice about preventing it, see Don’t Be A Victim of Loan Fraud. Local information on predatory lending: Here are some Local Resources by state, that can help you avoid being a victim of predatory lending. For FHA loans: For problems relating to origination, underwriting, or appraisals of FHA loans, contact the FHA Resource Center. Avoiding foreclosure on an FHA loan: Visit the HUD National Servicing Center web page and have your FHA case number at hand. You will find your case number on the mortgage settlement statement.

Fort Plain High School honors 2013 National Honor Society inductees by Elizabeth A. Tomlin Eleven Fort Plain High School students were recognized with a ceremony and banquet as they were inducted into the National Honor Society on June 1. “Today your academic and community achievements are being honored and recognized as you become official members of the National Honor Society,” High School Principal Deb Larrabee told the inductees. “I encourage you to continue to make good choices and continue to work hard to become a better student, a positive leader, a benefit to the community and perhaps most importantly, a person who has the character to make good choices — even when it is difficult.” NHS Advisor Denise Smith also spoke to the inductees about their accomplishments. Nellis Tavern’s Annual Rhubarb Festival

by Katie Ranno The Nellis Tavern held it’s 17th Annual Rhubarb Festival last Sunday on the grounds of the historic building, originally built by Christian Nellis, Sr. in 1747. Vice President of the Palatine Settlement Society, Donna Reston, said they came up with the idea to host a rhubarb festival after seeing something like it in the southern portion of the U.S. and found there was nothing like it here in the Northern region. “We wanted to do something that was different for this area.” Along with wanting to do something out of the ordinary, it’s interesting to note that rhubarb is also a part of the Nellis family crest. And the Tavern is something that the local Nellis descendants really get behind. Sandy Nellis Lane has been the treasurer of the Palatine Settlement

Society for the past two years and enjoys helping out with the rhubarb celebration, along with making rhubarb punch, which was for sale at the event. It’s safe to say the festival is purely for the love of rhubarb, which is why first time visitor Sharon Miller came from Clifton Park to join in on the day’s festivities. Many rhubarb centered dishes were showcased at the event including rhubarb dip and plenty of homemade pies full of different combinations such as, strawberry, blueberry, apple and mixed berry rhubarb. For others, such as local resident John Boyden, this is an event which they attend annually. When asked why he comes to festival every year, Boyden stated, “It’s nice to see friends and also stay on the wife’s good side. I’d be in trouble if I didn’t.”

Sylvia Nellis Boyden and Gloriann Steciak helped sell other baked goods made with rhubarb.

To your good health by Paul G. Donohue, M.D. Teenagers often make acne worse

to sunlight. My parents don’t want me to continue to use an antibiotic. Can you help? — G.G.

Dear Dr. Donohue: I am 17 years old. I have pimples all over my face. The only thing that helped was an antibiotic, but it made me sensitive

Answer: Let’s start with a couple of mistakes made by most people with acne. Don’t scrub your face or any place where acne has broken

out. Scrubbing causes irritation and worsens acne. Use a mild soap like Dove when washing. Don’t squeeze pimples, whiteheads or blackheads. You force bacteria into adjacent skin. Acne develops because of clogged pores through which hairs grow and

through which sebaceous (oil) glands empty their oil onto the skin. The first signs of trouble are whiteheads or blackheads. They indicate that the pore is plugged. Deep in the pore, down from the blockage, the oil glands continue to secrete oil and greatly distend the pore, which can rupture. Bacteria thrive on the oil. At this point, a pimple is born. Acne control involves unplugging the pore, eliminating the bacteria and putting the brakes on oil production. The oil production is in high gear because of the increase of male hormones at this time in life.

Benzoyl peroxide unplugs pores. Brand names include Clearasil and AcneClear, both available without prescription, as are many other brands. From this point on, effective medicines require a prescription. The first choice is retinoids — Renova cream and RetinA. They’re often used on alternating days with benzoyl peroxide. The next step up is antibiotics. In creams and lotions, they aren’t absorbed very much. Clindamycin and erythromycin are two such products. If no progress comes from skin-applied

antibiotics, then oral antibiotics are the next step. Tetracycline, doxycycline and minocycline are examples. Your parents should reconsider their ban on their use. Even if they sensitize you to sunlight, simply stay out of sunlight when using them. They worked for you. I haven’t listed all acne medicines. Bad acne, like yours, calls for treatment by the family doctor or a dermatologist. (c) 2013 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

Safety tips for summer fun (MS) — The weather is heating up and Americans are heading outdoors to soak up the fun.Warm weather enthusiasts should keep safety on the top of their minds when they’re out camping, boating and barbecuing. CSA Group, a leader in testing and certification, wants to remind Americans to stay safe all summer with the following tips. Camping stoves and lanterns • Fuel-burning camping equipment, such as stoves, lanterns and outdoor cookers, should only be lit outdoors and at least 10 feet (3 meters) from tents, combustible materials and vehicles. Never light a stove or lantern inside a tent or vehicle. • Before use, carefully inspect parts for leaks, blockages or damage. • Keep loose, flammable clothing away from open flames. Carefully monitor children and pets around stoves and lanterns. Boats and cabins • Ensure boats and cabins are equipped with proper emergency safety equipment, including

first aid kits and fire extinguishers, carbon monoxide detectors and fire alarms. • When first opening your cabin, carefully inspect all appliances for damage from rodents or insects. • Always wear a personal flotation device. Never consume alcohol while operating any vehicle. Outdoor gas barbecues • Before firing up your barbecue for the first time, carefully inspect burners and burner tubes for blockages due to dirt, grease, insects or rust buildup. Clean or replace any blocked parts or have a certified techni-

cian make repairs. • Propane cylinders must be inspected and requalified every 12 years in the United States. A date stamp on the cylinder indicates when it was last qualified. Don’t use a rusty or damaged cylinder. If in doubt, have your tank replaced. • When purchasing or installing a gas barbecue, make sure that it carries the mark of an approved certification organization, such as CSA Group, indicating the barbecue has been tested to applicable national standards.
