Ellen Thorbecke - From Peking to Paris

PHOTOGRAPHY

text Ruben Lundgren en Rik Suermondt In collaboration with the Nederlands Fotomuseum, Lecturis publishes Ellen Thorbecke - From Peking to Paris. This monograph tells the story of Ellen Thorbecke (1902-1973), who had a unique position in international photography. The book shows a rare view of everyday life in Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Paris and the Middle East in the 1930s and 1940s. Places where Thorbecke lived and worked during her life and which form the guideline of this book. In 1931 Ellen Thorbecke left for China. For this trip she bought her first camera. From a home-grown journalist, Thorbecke developed into a compelling photographer whose photos were engaged observations about the people and places she visited. Her photo reports were made in a lively candid style with an eye for the vitality of street life and she produced various photo books including Peking Studies (1934) and People in China (1935). Her visual stories make her oeuvre - one of the pearls of the Collection of the Nederlands Fotomuseum - a unique time document. Her small but special photo archive was entrusted to the museum in 2008 and consists of 638 black and white negatives, 166 of which were made in China. The images Thorbecke made are still relevant today because of her human, direct and unbiased way of looking. The book is published on the occasion of the exhibition Ellen Thorbeckes China, which can be seen (subject to change) from 4 June to 3 October 2021 in the Nederlands Fotomuseum. It is the first monograph in an ongoing series on the collection of the Nederlands Fotomuseum. Previously published publications with overviews of group exhibitions are Sterke verhalen and Rotterdam Werkt!. Soon The Gallery of Honor of Dutch Photography will be published. The Mullet Atlas

PHOTOGRAPHY

The Hague - The Netherlands Exhibition is on display in the Museum of Photography in the Hague starting in May

concept Daniel Heikens, Rein Langeveld en Joost Nijhuis photography Daniel Heikens & Rein Langeveld design Joost Nijhuis In the period 2011-2019, the photographers Daniel Heikens (Delft, 1980) and Rein Langeveld (The Hague, 1979) photographed a large number of men with a mullet ‘mat’ hairstyle in their hometown The Hague. Due to their enthousiasm together with the fascination of designer Joost Nijhuis (The Hague, 1980) of cultural phenomena and movements, the idea for a photo book was born. It was to be a collection of mullet men, designed like a veritable atlas, including geographic maps, pictograms and statistics based on interviews with the men. A so called Matlas. During their research into the phenomenon “the mat” (English: mullet, Flemish: neck carpet or neck spoiler), the guys noticed that the mat is worn all over the world and often for a reason. The Masai men, for example, wear a mat to show that they are still looking for a partner. In our western culture, the hairstyle often has an anarchic appearance. It is therefore the intention of the creative trio that the Dutch / Hague Matlas will be the starting shot for a series that will cover all continents.

Joost Nijhuis is a designer. Since his studies Public Space at the Design Academy Eindhoven, cultural manifestations and movements have often been a dominant theme in his work. Rein Langeveld’s approach to por trait photography is motivated by a desire to make all people equal, which often causes his subjects to act more freely than they actually are. Daniel Heikens graduated as a documentary photographer from the Royal Academy of Visual Arts in The Hague. Today he works as an all-round photography specialist. He is currently researching, assessing and cataloging 19th and 20th century photography for the art market at an international auction house.

PHOTOGRAPHY

text Floor Wesseling photography Floor Wesseling en Marques Malacia In 2018, Studio Wesseling was commissioned to design an exhibition about 50 years of Paradiso in the Amsterdam Museum. During the material research they came across the photos of Max Natkiel, who made powerful black and white photos in Paradiso of late punks and the first new wave in the early 1980s. Floor Wesseling got the idea to do the same: who visits Paradiso nowadays? Who are these night owls? Wesseling and his partner Marques Malacia received a one-year carte blanche from Paradiso. They went from party to party, to shows and performances, from neat evenings to colorful chaos. Everything passed by: young and old, black and white, fat and thin, sweaty and dry, gay or straight. The souls of Amsterdam, who form the beating heart of our city at night and are now so missed, paralyzed by that virus that rages through the country.

Neil Folberg

A Mirror in Macedonia Neil Folberg

author Neil Folberg photography Neil Folberg Drawn to Macedonia in 1971 by its vibrant folk culture, Neil Folberg received a fellowship from the University of California at Berkeley to spend five months photographing the land and people of this rugged, mountainous land, then part of Yugoslavia. Folberg’s task was complicated by the police & state security services. In his essay, Folberg writes about the work, it’s social and artistic context and of his conversations with the masters with whom he studied, photographers Ansel Adams and William Garnett. Looking back from a perspective of fifty years, Folberg writes, “Where are all those anonymous people that I met, each with a story? Where are they today? They are all here, in these images. But here is the surprise: looking back through these windows I find a mirror reflecting myself, a 21-year-old student from Berkeley. I watch myself as I set up a tripod and camera in a public square, where people either flow around me or become engaged, attracted or repelled by my camera. Secret agents follow me, but I don’t see them. I observe myself in the mirror of time.”

Neil Folberg was born in San Francisco in 1950. He now lives in Israel, where he runs Vision Gallery in Jerusalem. Folberg’s many books include And I Shall Dwell Among Them and Celestial Nights (Aperture, New York). His photographs have been shown worldwide in museums and galleries and his prints are in major museum collections.

Logo Land

DESIGN

A compilation of all the municipality logos of the Netherlands

text Amit Biswas

After moving to the Netherlands, author Amit Biswas (Dhaka, Bangladesh, 1987) became fascinated by the new logo of his new hometown Eindhoven. It inspired him to collect information about all logos and logos of all municipalities in the Netherlands, which turned out to be no small task since the required information was not easily available in all municipalities. He has invested more than four years in researching and collecting all the beautiful stories of the municipalities. Logo Land tells the underlying story of the municipal logos of the Netherlands. There are 352 unique municipalities in the Netherlands. Each municipality has its own logo. A logo is more than just a photo or a slogan. A logo tells the story of what makes a municipality unique through a combination of logos and words. Every municipality is unique and so is every story behind every logo. This book offers a unique combination of insight into Dutch logo design and unknown stories about our country. Book lovers can travel through the past and present of the Netherlands and get to know all the hidden stories about this country through the logos and house styles.

Amit Biswas was born and raised in Bangladesh. He moved to the Netherlands in 2011 for his master’s degree (International Business) in Maastricht and currently lives in Eindhoven. Amit moved from Bangaldesh to India for his bachelor’s degree (Marketing) at the age of 16. In 2011 he came to the Netherlands where he has found a new home. Exposure to different cultures has given him the foundation to approach subjects from different angles.

For the first time in Dutch history, Logo Land looks behind the interesting story of all logos. Biswas describes the logos of all Dutch municipalities. A unique book! Inflatable pig for the LP cover of Animals, Pink Floyd

text Bob Witman en Theo Botschuijver

Playful inventions is an overview of 50 years of work, compiled from an archive of photos, press releases, comments, newspaper clippings and memories. Theo Botschuijver’s “aerial art” was photogenic, temporary, usually invited participation and was sometimes subversive. For years Botschuijver produced a large collection of inflatable objects, attractions, sculptures and installations. He made playful spaces, objects for events that created sensations with a participatory role for the spectators. In addition to air, he often used light and optical effects, but also digital media and unusual projection techniques and laser light. His “inventions” for bands like Pink Floyd and Genesis are legendary.

Bob Witman is a journalist and writes for the Volkskrant and Stampa! amongst others. Theo Botschuijver (1943) studied at the Academy for Industrial Design in Eindhoven. From ‘67 he worked as an independent designer, where the industrial background faded and made way for playful connections between ar t, technology and enter tainment.

“If recognisability is a hallmark of quality, then Koen Vermeule is a good painter. You can recognize his works from hundreds. A “Koen Vermeule”, is a specific thing: a (often) large canvas or piece of paper with a landscape or city fragment displayed in a stylized, contrasting, graphic-looking painting style. “ - Stefan Kuiper Koen Vermeule - Fensterbilder features the work of Koen Vermeule from the past 9 years. It provides an overview of exhibitions, works on paper and paintings. The book shows his view on and thoughts about the world and its translation in images. With essays by Merel Bem, Stefan Kuiper, Renee SchuitenKniepstra and a brief reflection by Koen Vermeule himself on one of his sources of inspiration: Oskar Schlemmer. In her essay, Merel Bem describes a single painting by Koen Vermeule in a playful and associative way. She takes the reader along cities and everyday moments. Stefan Kuiper has chosen to sketch a profile. It is a rich and broad interview that not only tells how Koen Vermeule works, but also highlights the breadth of his sources of inspiration. Together they walk through his work, in circumferential movements, talking about the most diverse subjects, from sandpits to poetic realism.

drawings, paintings and three-dimensional works Marjolijn van den Assem text Florette Dijkstra A letter that Friedrich Hölderlin wrote to a friend as a travelogue was copied 350 times by Marjolijn van den Assem with a dip pen. She watched the landscape through his eyes, the way he describes it, and empathised with the appeal concluding his letter: ‘Please write to me soon. I need your pure tones. The soul that reigns among friends, thoughts that emerge in conversation and correspondence are indispensable for artists.’ Marjolijn van den Assem writes in her preface: “That is how I became aware once more that words arise from one’s state of mind. The movement of the step, the looking up- and downwards, the colours of the sky, the scent of the storm, the bending trees, they all affect the form our thoughts assume. On my 325th copy, a Nietzsche quote unwillingly infiltrated Hölderlin’s words: ‘there is something unsilenced within me, something that cannot be silenced, that wants to be heard.’ The essence of artistry. That brought me back to two of Friedrich Nietzsche’s aphorisms in his book The Gay Science: ‘The awareness of semblance’ and ‘Our ultimate gratitude towards art.’ Extensive exploration and visual comprehension of these statements have directed me towards contemplating the games that are played. The observation of daily life with all of its duties, conventions and guidelines. “

Marjolijn van den Assem (Rotterdam 1947) received the Hendrik Chabot Prize in 2019 for her entire oeuvre. Her drawings, paintings and spatial works are in the collections of many Dutch museums, including the Rijksmuseum, as well as in corporate and private collections. @realDonaldTrump

VISUAL ARTS

text @realDonaldTrump with a foreword by Hans den Hartog Jager written down by Bart Domburg Trump exercised presidential power in his own demagogic way via Twitter. Twitter gave Trump the opportunity to contact his followers directly, which he gratefully took advantage of. Through dozens of tweets a day, he spread directives, opinions, insults, intimidations and judgments that his eighty million followers eagerly read. He thus created a parallel reality and an enemy image. Opposition from traditional media was consistently labeled “Fake News”. Trump’s reality is believed unconditionally and with conviction by his followers and threatens to split society. The consequence of this became painfully manifest during the storming of the Capitol on January 6. Artist Bart Domburg started in 2013 to transfer historical texts, data and archive material onto large sheets of paper with a fineliner. In 2020 he realized that Trump was literally making history through social media; this had never been seen before. He decided to write down all tweets from October 1, 2020. In Domburg’s handwritten version, the tweets are no longer directives on a website, but the very personal messages of a man who is manipulating the world while writing.

Bart Domburg (Zwolle, 1957) lives and works in Amsterdam. His first exhibited works date from 1982. His work include posters and paintings. Recently he has also devoted himself to “writing”.

From the early nineties she has been commissioned for sculptures in public spaces, such as Eindhoven Airport and the Elkerliek Hospital in Helmond. She travels through the Sahara, visits special prehistoric places, makes drawings, paintings and beautiful “world necklaces” including old mummy beads. The connection with Egypt can be seen, amongst other things, on her coffin that she painted herself 30 years before her death. Death is a much discussed topic, reflected in her life, work and living space. She spoke with mild wisdom and she said she was on earth to learn. Many are inspired by her work and insights. samen opgroeien in een adoptie- of pleeggezin

text Femmie Juffer, Lindy Popma en Monique Steenstra photography Lilian van Rooij What is it like growing up as brothers and sisters in an adoptive family, foster family or family home? Twenty-four young people between the ages of fourteen and twenty tell about their experiences in twelve double interviews. The stories and photo portraits give an insight into their mutual connection. Special attention is paid to the biologically own children in an adoptive or foster family. They speak with their foster brother or sister or their adopted brother or sister. The stories show that you can be brothers and sisters, but you can also become brothers and sisters. The interviews with the youngsters are followed by a substantive chapter. What do we know from scientific research about the unique and valuable relationship between siblings?

Femmie Juffer, Lindy Popma and Monique Steenstra were responsible for the compilation and editing of 18 x 18 and Pleegkinderen op de drempel published by Lecturis. Then the authors, together with photographer Lilian van Rooij, made Dit huis is een thuis (growing up in a multicultural adoptive or foster family), which also appeared at DATO-Lecturis.

Siblings play together, compete with each other and can offer each other help and support. The young people with their personal stories give a voice to all those adopted and foster children who have similar experiences.

Life stories in the shadow of Tibet Myra de Rooy

photography & text Myra de Rooy

Author Myra de Rooy meets a group of eight Tibetan ex-political prisoners, people who stood up against the Chinese occupation of their country. Their life stories are deeply moving. These people show courage and resilience, and their testimonials shine a light on the recent history of Tibet, in the shadow of Chinese rule. The main protagonists of this book cannot return to their country. Myra de Rooy visits their homes and talks to their families in Tibet. Her visits to Lhasa and her journeys to small villages, nomad tents, monasteries and nunneries bring the stories of these refugees to life. Windhorse House is not just a fascinating travelogue but it also paints a shocking picture of Tibet today.

In addition to being a writer and photographer, geologist Myra de Rooy is also a mountaineer. Fascinated by the mountain world and its inhabitants, she has made many solo trips in remote areas of Tibet, Ladakh, Nepal and Norway. Previous books that have been written by her are Vrouwen in Boeddha’s bergen (2004), Dochters van de bergen (2015), Chamlang (2017) and In de lengte (2020).

Hildegard Hick photographed Eindhoven during the first months of “Corona”. She herself says about it: “From the start of this Corona crisis, I have recorded what happened and above all - what didn’t happen anymore in Eindhoven. A photo report that gives a picture of a sensitive period in everyone’s life. A time that took away a lot from us. But also a time when we came up with creative solutions, and had an eye and care for each other. And therefore a time that has given us a lot (back). A time that paved the way to the new normal. “ The book shows photos of recognizable and less recognizable places and people in the city. The city that became empty and where people still found each other in alternative ways that were allowed.

The paintings are a free representation of Schubert’s song cycle Winterreise. The music and poems inspired Cora Moret to paint her own dream images and memories. The result is a series of 24 paintings, sometimes rooted in reality, sometimes abstract or almost mythical. This Winterreise has changed and deepened her working method as an artist, because of the courage to take a new course. “On the one hand, you have the technology, you know what you are doing. On the other hand, you don’t know what you’re doing at all. And that is also the intention, that you enter that zone where it can happen, that you do not know exactly anymore. I don’t recognize me in the shadows

photography Thana Faroq design Syb Thana decided to make this book to figure out how everything happened – to track down the war, the escape, the transition, and the unfamiliar. It’s not easy to talk about trauma while you’re living in it because you can’t recognize it. Creating this work enabled her to deal with the trauma and to confront it on her own terms. The images and the words serve as a record, a healing method to register and validate her emotions and experiences during the transition into the unknown. “I wanted to offer my own version of the story, one that is infused with my resilient spirit, unbroken, unfailing and devoid of self-pity. I wanted to climb the fences, and I did” Throughout this journey, Thana took on many roles – She is the storyteller, the photographer, and the person who has gone through these experiences of displacement and asylum. It is empowering to tell your own story to the world. It is liberating. She was not alone and so she hoped to visually articulate people’s struggles to leave countries where conditions of violence, war, and aggression are prevalent. She focused on reflections of personal moments including handwritten testimonies that capture the hopes, fears, dreams, and struggles.

Jeroen Arians #Streetlogic In our strictly organized surroundings, the street belongs to everyone and no one. With his series #Streetlogic, Jeroen Arians registers how the everyday objects people leave behind reclaim public space. Unintentionally, these people create temporary spectacles of perfect beauty. Sometimes unreal, absurd and even outright funny, the spectacles end once the objects are disposed of by waste collectors or given new life by interested strangers. Soms onwerkelijk, soms absurd of ronduit geestig.
