ARCHITECTURE

130 highlights of 19th-century architecture in Amsterdam!

Text: Bert Franssen This book describes 130 highlights of nineteenth-century architecture in Amsterdam, against the background of the social changes of this century. It deals with origins, architecture, architect, original function, appreciation at the time, the sometimes curious history during their existence, and reuse. The descriptions are accompanied by lots of photographs. They are placed in a walkable order. The nineteenth century is not known as a heyday of architecture, not in the Netherlands, not in Amsterdam. This era has been called the "century of eclecticism," and that is not meant positively. But this negative image is beginning to tilt. The nineteenth century was the time of great discoveries. In architecture, craftsmanship, talent, or genius did not suddenly cease, but rather were greatly stimulated. Very many nineteenth-century objects became iconic in the cityscape: train stations, stock exchanges, churches, hospitals, offices, factories, museums, homes, parks. Iconic not only in nineteenth-century neighborhoods, but certainly also in the inner city. Two thirds of the much admired downtown consists of architecture from after 1850. The Neo-Renaissance, mixed with other styles or not, was refreshing and innovative in its time - after two centuries of classicism. Not to mention the art nouveau and rationalism of Berlage

de city Rene Erven

Text: René Erven René Erven has studied the recent genesis of the buildings and layout of present-day Eindhoven. The demolition of City Hall in the 1960s and the city plan by architects Van den Broek and Bakema are often cited as disastrous events in this history. How did this happen and who pulled the strings? Delpher's ability to access newspaper and magazine archives is such that a wealth of information surfaced. Erven describes the centennial development of the Eindhoven city from the perspective of the concerned city dweller.

René Erven Studied at the Design Academy and went on to study Cultural Studies. Was final editor and editor of several magazines, including the trade journal De Architect.Today Erven is a freelance journalist and coordinator of the Architecture Center Region Eindhoven.

The Green Heart

SPATIAL PLANNING

Text: Marinke Steenhuis, Paul Meurs, Vita Teunissen From Maartensdijk to Meerkerk and from Abcoude to Zoeterwoude: the Green Heart is a vast rural area surrounded by the largest Dutch cities. The Green Heart is home to seven hundred thousand people, surrounded by seven million more. The contrast in lifestyles is sometimes stark – city and countryside overlap, and it is this overlap that has brought prosperity to the Dutch Delta for four centuries. For city dwellers, the landscape of the Green Heart is a weekend destination; for residents, it is part of their identity. A thousand years ago, the Green Heart was a peatland wilderness. Step by step, pioneers reclaimed the marshes and brought the area under cultivation. In the twelfth century, the first waterworks were built because of the subsidence of the land. This book tells the story of the Green Heart and introduces the people who have shaped and coloured the landscape. The book also gives meaning and direction to today’s urgent challenges: subsidence, salinisation, water intake and discharge, drought problems, housing, nature and strengthening a healthy and attractive business climate. The question is not whether the landscape of the Green Heart will change, but how. This book tells the story of ten centuries of transformation.

Delft in Winterlight

PHOTOGRAPHY

Photography and text: Roel de Oude Why didn’t Johannes Vermeer and Pieter de Hooch paint wintry Delft cityscapes? This book does not answer that question, but it does make you feel the lack of it a bit. Delft in Winterlight is a photobook with images of the city of Delft during wintertime. Roel de Oude (1944) worked as a still photographer for the documentary film Vermeer: Master of the Light, released (2001) by the National Gallery of Art, Washington DC, USA. He is co-photographer of the book View of Delft (Scriptum Publishers Schiedam, 2003). In the early 1970s, De Oude took several years of photography lessons at the Vrije Academie ‘Psychopolis’ in The Hague, with teacher Frans Zwartjes. In 2018 he founded the Ortus Photo Archives Foundation (SOFA), committed to preserving and exploiting photo archives of leisure photographers, curated the exhibitions Paris, je t’aime (2019) and Belgium – Impressions (2021) organized by SOFA and was the author of the brochures published at the exhibition.

Keepers

PHOTOGRAPHY

Photography and text: Jurre Rompa Stadsimkers in Amsterdam Whoever walks from Dam Square in Amsterdam into the Nes, a narrow, dark street, known for its theaters such as De Brakke Grond. In there, through a door and backstage, behind a stage, up the stairs, and another staircase, a storage room, a door and suddenly: a roof. In the middle of the city, but far from the hustle and bustle, there they are: the beehives, neatly in a row. They are everywhere, the city bees. On the roofs of luxury hotels such as The Grand and Waldorf Astoria. Or on top of a wonderful work of art on a busy road in the Eastern Docklands: the beekeeper can get there by pressing a button, after which a ladder appears. And furthermore, at the University of Amsterdam, in the Hortus, among the greenery at the Gaasperplas, on balconies, in schools, on the sixteenth floor of an office tower on the Zuidas and in a place whose name demanded it: the roof of the Beehive. In Amsterdam the bee is welcome as long as a beekeeper keeps a skilled watch. There are many, more than you think: bee colonies in the city that people watch over. Assertive when necessary, meek when the people ask for it, but always with the immense dedication that a beekeeper must have. The responsibility for hundreds or thousands of buzzing souls is great. It is a sacrifice, one that takes time, thought and love. KEEPERS by photographer Jurre Rompa cinematically shows the mysterious world of the beekeeper. In places where the unsuspecting passer-by would never suspect a kingdom of bees. In the city, in Amsterdam. Jurre Rompa is a portrait and documentary photographer from Amsterdam (1990). Tales from the Black Sea

PHOTOGRAPHY

Photography: Bert Spiertz Text: Bert Spiertz en Olaf Tempelman The Black Sea has been a crossroads between Europe and Asia for millennia. Its coasts are meeting places of contrasting cultures, religions and ideologies with just as much potential for serious conflict. During a number of trips, Bert Spiertz followed this more than four thousand kilometer long coast through six countries, with Istanbul as the start and end point. Tales from the Black Sea takes you from the Bosphorus and Turkish port cities such as Trabzon to Batumi in Georgia and the fashionable Russian spa town of Sochi. But also to the Crimean peninsula annexed by Russia and the Ukrainian cities of Cherson and Odesa, to the beautiful but endangered water world of the Danube delta and the Bulgarian Riviera. It turns out that history is often not over here and lives on painfully in the stones, the landscape and in the minds of many people. It is an area where there are problems when it comes to geopolitics, religion, minorities and the unprocessed past. Olaf Tempelman, foreign editor of de Volkskrant, wrote in an essay included in the book: “Bert Spiertz put together a beautiful photo book from all the images he took with him from his travels along the coasts of the Black Sea”

Bert Spiertz Worked since the 1980s for the agencies Hollandse Hoogte and ANP and for magazines and organizations, among others. Photographed while traveling on his own initiative. His photography focuses mainly on societies in different cultures and social relationships. In the 1980s and 1990s he photographed in Eastern Europe, the Balkans and the Soviet Union. After 2000, his work included projects in Asia and Africa. Nowadays, he usually works on longer documentary projects focusing on the natural and social environment. In 2014, he co-initiated The Other Side, a photo exhibition by 11 photographers about the former Eastern Bloc and the upheaval of 1989 and beyond. In 2018, Lecturis published his book Man-made Coast, about the Dutch North Sea coast.

The dragon of Beesel, since 1736

Photography and text: Robin Butter Essay by Jona Lendering Dragons are celebrated worldwide in various forms, such as stories, books, films and series. The most famous story in Europe is that of George and the Dragon, but how can this legend have a major impact on a small village community in Central Limburg, the Netherlands? Beesel is dragon territory! A dragon from the river Maas appears in this village once every seven years. The village then turns into an open-air spectacle, where 500 volunteers from the 2,500 inhabitants bring the story of George and the Dragon to life. When you are born in Beesel, ‘drake blood’ automatically flows through your veins. ‘Drakeblood’ is Limburg dialect for dragon’s blood. The oldest known mention of the Beeselse dragon dates from 1736, where people sang about ‘dat liedeke van den giftighen draecke’ (song of the poisonous Dragon), which is passed on from generation to generation. In the region, this phenomenon is known as the Dragon Stabbing. It seems to be much older, but due to a gigantic fire in 1899, many archives about the village were lost and it remains only speculation. By entering into close collaboration with the village, Robin has succeeded in capturing this age-old phenomenon and bringing it together in this photo book. In Beesel, a history has been created around an event that never took place. Dutch and English size: 17o x 240 mm pages: 188 hardcover 10

Robin Butter is a documentary photographer who actually wanted to become an archaeologist at a young age, in her youthful imagination there was something adventurous about digging and exploring in the earth. She is interested in history, myths and legends. Photography has therefore become a tool for her to dig into the backgrounds of cultural phenomena. In order to escape the reality of everyday life, she seeks to connect with others through her work.

I Don't Fold Under Pressure

PHOTOGRAPHY

Photography: Erik van Cuyk How do you tell a story about South London? Photographer Erik van Cuyk traveled to South London neighborhoods like Peckham, Brixton and Croydon between 2021 and 2023. He chose locations made famous by gang violence and stabbings. Van Cuyk became intrigued by the cold statistics in the reporting; sometimes about young people as young as 13 as perpetrators or victims. Unreal armageddon-like stories but where there is also much more than that to be found. Van Cuyk looked for context in the street scene, among other things. That, supplemented with honest, vulnerable and yet powerful portraits of young people trying to build their lives as drill-rappers, provides a special look at big-city issues that are also becoming relevant in our Dutch cities. "With a change of point of view, a step to the left or right, I show a completely different world. And maybe with that a different world view is created?"

Erik van Cuyk Photographer Erik van Cuyk originally graduated as a lawyer but chose photography after several detours. After graduating from the Fotoacademie in Amsterdam (2019), his series on a demolition district in his hometown of Arnhem (NL) was picked up as "Emerging European Talent" at the Voies Off photo festival in Arles. Van Cuyk has since published a number of books and his photography has been featured at international festivals such as Photoville New York and the Naarden Fotofestival. His work is influenced by the philosophy of relativism and shows the human drive for meaning amid transience. Van Cuyk constructs images without staging, exploiting the everyday and capturing what already exists. As such, it is at the intersection between documentary, socially engaged and abstract autonomous photography.

TRANSITIONS IN SPAIN Michiel Schierbeek

Text Bert Schierbeek

Photography: Michiel Schierbeek Text: Bert Schierbeek Transitions in Spain is a journey through the changing built environment in Spain. An environment that has been changing for many years because of the migration of people to the big cities. How everything is left behind, the old and modern ruins that remain untouched and are only removed or built on when something new is put in its place. The holes in the streets of villages and towns, with bright orange pur foam insulated facades waiting to be repurposed, but also the new developments in industry, in cities and tourist areas where the money is made and where big projects are developed. A country that is changing rapidly, but with an interior where the old Spain still prevails, with landscapes of admirable raw vastness and where the villages still seem to be organically set in the land. This book is also an homage to his father Bert Schierbeek, the writer and poet, who since 1950 has traveled extensively through Spain and written about that country. In 1952 a travel book and later in prose and poetry. On these trips he also collaborated several times with wellknown photographers and wrote texts for photo books about Spain. A selection of all these texts are incorporated into this book and takes us back in time. As Bert Schierbeek once said; life does not consist of one story but 77 stories at the same time.

Bert Schierbeek was a literary all-rounder and was at the cradle of the Fifties. He wrote romance novels, experimental novels, plays, travel books, essays and poems. The distinction between the various forms was not fixed. An epic poem could be read as a short story, and his stories are poetic in form. Michiel Schierbeek is a sculptor, photographer and teacher. In addition to monumental objects in public spaces and producing sculptures for exhibitions, in recent years he has devoted himself to photography. His work is represented in several private and public collections. This is his second voluminous book of photographs.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Tuindorp Nieuwendam

Photography and text: Jaap van den Beukel Photographer Jaap van den Beukel shows a snapshot of the Amsterdam Tuindorp Nieuwendam district in the photo and story book MIJN NOORD. Photographer and filmmaker Jaap van den Beukel approached more than 100 residents on the street in the Tuindorp Nieuwendam district in Amsterdam Noord. Of these, he has portrayed more than 75 people in their own environment. “I was inspired by the stories of these residents, but also touched by their openness and hospitality. At first, time seems to stand still in this neighborhood, but due to the shift from social rental to owner-occupied housing, changes are indeed taking place behind the facades and the older Northerner is gradually being replaced by a new generation of residents. Through the many conversations, its own architecture, the environment with mobility scooters, Cantas, tricycles and many pets, I became more and more intertwined with this neighborhood and that is how I discovered “Mijn Noord”.” Last summer, Van den Beukel’s outdoor exhibition traveled through Amsterdam. In addition to the web documentary mijnnoord.nl, the book is now also being published. In addition to photography, this also contains stories about the special encounters with the residents.

Jaap van den Beukel Trained as a photographer. Works for advertising and design agencies at home and abroad. In addition to commercial assignments, he keeps an eye out for his own projects. With support from the Stadsarchief Amsterdam, the series Our Grid/ Growing between the Lines was created in 2016: portraits of young people from Amsterdam's IJburg neighborhood, set against the austere architecture of the island. In the same period, Van den Beukel begins filming, out of the desire to be able to get even closer to the person. The result is a moving portrait of his parents in their most vulnerable years. Titled Om die liefde gaat het, NPO will broadcast the documentary in 2019. A year later, his short film The Late Life will premiere at the Dutch Film Festival. Again a candid portrait, this time of award-winning actor Piet Kamerman, showing how to embrace the future as a very elderly person. Van den Beukel's photo and film project Mijn Noord will be nominated for the Zilveren Camera and the Dutch Photography Award in 2023.

Photography and text: Mariet Dingemans Documentary photographer and anthropologist Mariet Dingemans photographed the residents of the sustainable residential community De Brouwketel in Angeren (Gelderland) for three and a half years. Nine adults, five children, six sheep, a lot of chickens and a dog. The Brouwketelaars live as sustainably and self-sufficiently as possible. They grow their own fruit and vegetables, bake their own bread, use as little water, electricity and plastic as possible and heat their house with wood from the land. On average, Dingemans visited for a few days every two months. Her stay at the residential community gave the photographer an image of a completely different world. She was touched by the conscious handling of nature, the aversion to outward appearances and excessive hygiene and the slow way of life of the residents of the Brouwketel. This made Dingemans look at her own life differently. The book contains 101 photos interspersed with diary fragments.

Songs in a strange Land

PHOTOGRAPHY

Photography: Michelle Piergoelam Texts: Michelle Piergoelam en Alex van Stipriaan This book is about the nighttime hours on the water of the enslaved in Suriname. The design of the book takes you on a journey, where you imagine yourself in the different phases of the night. The enslaved spent hours on the water rowing their boats: during that time they rehearsed new songs with critical comments about the masters. The songs are sung using a call-and-response technique where one person takes the lead and the rest respond. It was a new way to create cultural elements and feel powerful. Songs in a Strange Land visualizes the stories of hope and resilience, providing a glimpse of these traditions during the years of slavery, with the code language hidden in work songs. It is about underexposed AfroSurinamese stories during the time of slavery, where intangible cultural heritage comes to light. These stories and traditions, passed down from Africa to Suriname, and from generation to generation, allowed the enslaved to share their thoughts without the slave owner knowing what was really meant.

Michelle Piergoelam (1997) Is a graduate of the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, Netherlands. She creates visual stories based on cultural myths, dreams and memories. Despite her Surinamese background, she knew little about the country. Her curiosity to want to learn more about it prompted her to explore the cultural stories, fairy tales and myths. She consciously uses indigenous legends, geography and anthropology to preserve and share underexposed parts of history. She explores different photographic techniques and uses elements of the night as form. Details become the subject and small gestures make their presence felt once the flashlight falls over them. Her project "The untangled tales" won her the Zilveren Camera second prize for Storytelling 2020 and the SO Awards Public Prize, among others.

Text: Dingenus van de Vrie Graphic designer and teacher Jan Begeer (1921-2002) is best known as head teacher of the Graphic Design Department at the Academy St. Joost in Breda. He taught there from 1958 and stopped when he retired in 1986. Jan Begeer was a charismatic teacher with a great awareness of the role the graphic designer had to play in society. The designer had to base his designs on a clear analysis of the assignment. He realized better than anyone else that the practice of the graphic designer had to be preceded by a learning situation. Not so much to experiment endlessly or to find his own "face," but to be able to speak the language of graphic design.Jan Begeer was also aloof and closed and almost never talked about his own work, let alone showed it as an example of how it should be done. Now, for the first time, the extraordinary graphic designs he created can be seen. In his multifaceted oeuvre we find brilliant moments, posters, for a Frank Lloyd Wright exhibition, for the Museum Prinsenhof and an anti-war print for publisher Van Gennep, But also numerous gems like New Year's cards and leaflets for the store around the corner.

Love Letters to my Clothes

FASHION AND SUSTAINABILITY

New textile legislation from the EU and the Dutch government is forcing companies to adopt sustainability policies. In July, for example, the UPV - extended producer responsibility - went into effect. This law makes companies putting textiles on the Dutch market responsible for collecting and sorting their products after the user phase. The ambition from the EU is for a UPV to apply to all countries in Europe by 2025. Previously, sustainability was a "nice to have" for companies, but it is now becoming a "must have. How does that affect companies but also consumers in the Netherlands? How can consumers start to revalue the clothes hanging in their closets?

Text: Kim A. Poldner, foreword Kristine H. Harper Photography: Julie Vielvoije When Kim A. Poldner moved to a new city with her family in 2022, she decided to say goodbye to certain items of clothing. In intimate farewell letters to these long-cherished items from her wardrobe, she reflects on 20 years of activism for a sustainable fashion industry. She describes what these garments mean to her during travel, relating and becoming the woman she is. In our fast fashion economy, the letters can be seen as a feminist, embodied reflection on the revaluation of our clothes. The book is a sensual ode to her clothing, but above all a manifesto of caring for who you are and what you wear. With a foreword by Kristine H. Harper.

Kim A. Poldner has been committed to sustainable fashion for twenty years, as a researcher, teacher and entrepreneur. For ten years, she lived and worked abroad where she earned her PhD on sustainable entrepreneurship in fashion. She has published dozens of scientific articles and books on her research and works with numerous designers and companies to make the fashion industry more sustainable.

BIOGRAPHY

Text: Martijn van Empel 'To you, sir, Philips is a brand, to me it is my name.' What does this reprimand by Frits Philips say about him? Arrogance? Selfconsciousness like his fathers 'they will know who they have before them'? Perhaps gratitude, or still the burden of an imposed responsibility? Martijn van Empel illuminates the life of Frits Philips, the man who was expected to follow in the footsteps of his famous father Anton. A seemingly impossible task that he fulfilled in his own unique way. Van Empel knows how to interpret the Frits Philips man very well: the burden of comparison with those around him whom he admired, yet his own enthusiasm and daring. And with all this, something of Juliana's famous statement, "Who am I that I am allowed to do this?
