Editor’s Note

January/February 2016  The Edenbridge Directory

Dear Neighbours,

Happy New Year! As usual, I am writing my note even before I've had a chance to celebrate Christmas myself (it's actually still 2 weeks away) so I can only imagine that when this issue lands on your doormat, I'll be feeling relaxed (I hope), maybe a little stuffed from all the Christmas excess, and thinking about my plans for 2016. It's been another busy couple of months with so much going on as usual. Have you heard about the new Forget-me-not Café at BRIDGES which launched in Edenbridge a couple of months ago. Another much needed asset for our community and it was great to have our local MP Tom Tugendhat at the launch event in October. Find out more on page 37. If you read my note regularly you're probably aware by now how much I enjoy a good quiz so it was back to the Edenbridge WI Hall with my usual team at the end of October to take part in the annual Edenbridge & Westerham Rotary Club quiz. A great night was had by all and a total of £1,015.00 was raised for Prostate Cancer and local charities.

I'm extremely fond of dressing up and was able to wear my favourite fancy dress outfit to the Chamber of Commerce Halloween Dinner Dance at the end of October. This was to raise funds for the Christmas Lights that go up in the town centre each year. It's an expensive job maintaining the lights and having them installed and Di Kingham & me taken down each year so fundrasing for them is important. Local band Calico Jack provided the live entertainment for the event and they were absolutely superb! I'm also delighted to announce that The Edenbridge Directory has become one of the main supporters now of the Eden Valley Loyalty Card. This is a scheme launched by the local Chamber of Commerce some time ago to encourage everyone to shop local. For every £10 you spend in one of the participating businesses, you receive a stamp on your card and each full card is entered into a draw where you could win £50 of vouchers to spend locally at participating businesses. Find out more on page 30. A big thank you to this issue's crossword sponsor, Options Beauty Salon in the high street who are donating a half day pamper retreat to one lucky winner. I've been fortunate enough to enjoy one of these myself (worth £90) so turn to page 50 and start working out those crossword clues! I hope you enjoy this issue and please, don’t forget to mention The Edenbridge Directory if you are responding to anything you’ve seen featured in this magazine as it helps secure it’s future. The deadline for the March/April 2016 issue is 29th January! Until next time...

appearances aesthtics - Transforming the way we look Pt 9 out to the highest possible standards and she also holds all the relevant certifications required so you can be assured you are in safe hands.

Gillian Huntley, 2015 Kent Aesthetic Practitioner of the Year, of award winning appearances is celebrating 30 years in the industry this year and her treatments have really helped transform the lives of her clients by boosting their confidence through the nonsurgical procedures she offers. As well as specialist treatments such as mole removal, mesotherapy, thread vein/pigmentation removal, skin peels using the Image Skincare range, skin tag removal, Gillian also provides semi-permanent cosmetic treatments such as eyebrow (WoW Brows) and eyeliner tattooing, areola reconstruction, receding hairlines and medical tattooing. Gillian's own clinic is in Chislehurst but she sees many of her local Edenbridge clients at Options Beauty Salon in the High Street. All her treatments are carried

28

One of the treatments which is starting to become more popular, and one we haven't actually covered yet through these articles, is the beauty spot (sometimes referred to as a beauty mark). Some people have natural spots which are positioned perfectly, adding that something extra to their face (Marilyn Monroe, Cindy Crawford etc.)

There is no rule as to where the perfect 'spot' might be located and after the first three spots Gillian drew on me I didn't think I'd be going through with the treatment.

3

It wasn't until Gillian drew the 'Von Teese' on my face that I could feel my mind changing. It can be quite a big decision to make on your own and I was glad that I had brought my friend Julie along to this particular session. Gillian was more than happy for me to bring a friend and Julie was very interested in finding out more about the treatments Gillian offers. I could see from the look on Julie's face (believe me I know her well enough to be able to read her expressions) and without her even saying a word I knew she was in agreement - this was the one - it was fun, looked natural so why not? So with that Gillian began the preparation procedure for my new semipermanent beauty spot. As with all the semipermanent make-up treatments, the process begins by ensuring the skin is clean (so make-up off ) and a numbing cream is applied to make the process more comfortable. As well as having the beauty spot tattooed Gillian would also be applying the second

Semi-permanent make-up can be used to enhance your features or even to create something that isn't there. Gillian has been able to 'disguise' webbed toes by creating the illusion of a gap between the toes. The pigment (colouring) used for the make-up is mixed individually for each client as different tones suit different complexions. Gillian has an extremely good eye in

This process is similar to having a permanent tattoo as there is a needle used to place the coloured pigment under your skin. The difference with semi-permanent tattooing is that the needle does not penetrate the skin as deeply as it is often carried out in very sensitive areas. So what if I decide I didn't want the beauty spot anymore? Well, it will fade over time, disappearing completely in about 2-3 years. If I want to keep it then an annual touch up would be all that is required.

Business Innovation Zone Norton House Fircroft Way Edenbridge TN8 6EL

BIZ News... 01732 667 250

info@businessinnovationzone.co.uk

Helping to get our young people into employment There has been so much happening at the BIZ Centre since our last newsletter and we are delighted with how much more use this facility is getting. Located half way along Fircroft Way, the centre is starting to prove popular with local businesses and organisations as a great place to run courses. We have had two 'Introduction to Twitter' workshops run by Laura Burton-Lawrence and the local Town Council have also used the facility for a short course. There is WiFi and ample free parking available outside the building and we have also had handrails fitted to the outside steps so that less mobile members of the community are able to access the venue safely. Thank you so much Terry Blake

for installing these for us as the more accessible the building is, the more members of the local community who can benefit from using it. We have organised a couple of events for the Eden Valley Chamber of Commerce, sorting out the room set up and also the provision of refreshments and food. We are happy to organise as much or as little for events as our clients wish.

EBAY SELLING SERVICE

Our eBay service has really taken off and the back office is brimming with items for Bevan to put up for sale on eBay. Many of the items have been donated to the centre so we can keep the full profits but we also sell items on behalf of clients for a small fee. Bevan will take pictures, list the item on selling sites and organise the posting once the item has been sold.

SUPPORTING LOCAL BUSINESSES

We were recently asked by a local company to help them find staff for their business which we were able to do successfully. We also provide a mentoring programme for business startups and are delighted that Sue Moore from mobile catering van Coffee with Moore now

businessinnovationzone.co.uk visits Fircroft Way on weekdays to provide lunch for the local workers along the industrial estate. We have also recently secured a continual contract with a local firm and have our young people working on parts assembly for the company.

WEBSITES FOR BUSINESSES

One of our newest team members, David, is a website builder. He has almost completed a new website for local business Brollie Buddies, to sell their versatile gadget Clippa. This product is fantastic and we are sure that stock is going to fly off the shelves. As well as being able to purchase via the new website, we're more than happy for potential buyers to come to the centre and purchase these direct through us as we hold plenty of stock on the premises.

CAN WE HELP YOU?

We are very flexible in the help we provide so if you need any assistance then give us a call or pop into the centre and we'll see what we can do for you!

The Edenbridge Directory is a proud sponsor of the Business Innovation Zone - a unique facility supporting young people, businesses and the local community of the Eden Valley area.

Following all the consultation and collecting of information, the Edenbridge Neighbourhood Plan project is now working on draft local policies to help shape the way the town develops in the next 15 years. The Neighbourhood Plan group would like to thank all the households who replied to the Housing Needs Survey, to the businesses who responded to the Business Survey and to the Youth Forum for their views on the town. The project has been awarded a grant for experienced technical support in reviewing the evidence, wording the policies, and drawing the sections of the Plan document together. Watch out for the chance to have your say on the proposed Policies at the end of February, including an event in Rickards Hall on Saturday morning 27th February, and a survey to every local household. Things to do for the over 50s! For a town of this size there is plenty to keep you busy and many ways to have fun, make new friends, learn new things and visit new places...especially if you are over 50. I went along to find out more about two of the groups we have in the local area, Edenbridge Active Retirement Association (EdenARA) and Edenbridge Univsersity of the Third Age (U3A). Both groups meet monthly, have speakers at their meetings and have large memberships but offer quite different activities to their members.

EdenARA Chair: Stephanie King 01732 864 487 Meeting Venue: Edenbridge WI Hall

Time of meetings: Monthly 2nd Friday, 2.15-4.30pm Website: kentara.weebly.com EdenARA was formed in 2007 and has approximtely 140 members coming not just from the Edenbridge area but also Sevenoaks, Westerham, Lingfield and Oxted. The group is part of KentARA, founded in 1997, which now has 52 clubs across Kent. Edenbridge members are able to take part in additional activities organised by KentARA. It is very much a community focused organisation helping people over the age of 50 who are not in full time gainful employment, to remain active. The monthly meetings at the WI Hall consist of a speaker or

entertainer and members can socialise during the tea break. There are numerous activities and events organised throughout the year such as:  Walks with pub lunches  Short mat bowls  Whist  Yoga  Diners Club  Theatre trips  Barn dances

when I moved into the area in 2007 and it has helped me make new friends." Although there is a short waiting list for membership, the group are actively looking for new members, especially people who would be willing to contribute to the club and who are interested in participating in, and furthering the work of EdenARA.

Annual activities include a quiz, beetle drive, golf competition and games evening as well as an Easter tea party and cream teas.

Each year the group choose a local charity to raise funds for and this year it is Edenbridge Voluntary Transport Service.

There are also organised trips for members to enjoy which normally take place once a month (for a reasonable charge) and these have included river boat trips, stately home visits, steam train rides, seaside visits.

This group is also for anyone over the age of 50 who is retired or semiretired. Originally meeting at Rickards Hall in the High Street the group had to move to a larger venue last year in order to accommodate the large membership, now nearly at 200 members. Outside of the regular monthly meetings there is a wide selection of hobby and interest groups for members to participate in. Each group is led by a member who will organise their own groups. Whether it's bird watching, golf, bridge, gardening, rock'n'roll, art (and more to choose from) it would be difficult not to find something to suit your interests. Flexible Health Insurance Brokers Ltd: Private Medical Insurance explained waiting times. You can often also get access to expensive cancer drugs that the NHS may not be able to fund. Overall, PMI gives you more choices. Julie Defago, adviser at Flexible Health Insurance, explains the benefits of Private Medical Insurance - “PMI”

One of the most frequently asked questions is “Why do I need PMI when I can use the NHS for free?” We are lucky to have the NHS in this country and there can be little doubt that it has transformed the health of the nation since it started in 1948. Sadly though, the NHS is at breaking point and access to prompt medical care can be a lottery with varying standards of care, especially for nonemergency conditions. These are some of the reasons why many people consider PMI. The main benefits of PMI are that you can choose when you have your treatment, which consultant you go to and avoid lengthy NHS

It is important to understand what your policy is designed to cover. The policy won’t cover pre-existing problems or the management of incurable chronic problems. The principle is that the policy is intended to cover the treatment of “Acute” medical problems - i.e something that can be treated in order to make you better. Once you have decided that you want PMI, how can you arrange cover? You could go online but the market is complex and there is a lot to consider when making your choice. Some insurers sell direct but remember that they will only offer their own policies and this may be on a “non-advised” basis meaning that you are given a choice of policies and prices but no advice as to whether they are suitable. At Flexible Health we are FCA regulated Independent

Healthcare specialists so are qualified to give advice and recommendations for individuals, company schemes and international clients. We look at most insurers in the market to find the best policy for you, taking into account your previous medical problems, cover level, budget and hospital choice. Once your policy is in place we review it for you annually to ensure that it continues to be your best option. If you have an existing policy we may be able to transfer you to a more suitable policy with continued cover for previous problems, even mid way through your policy year. We may also be able to negotiate with your existing insurer to get a cheaper premium. Flexible Health are based in Edenbridge and we offer advice over the phone or in person. If you would like advice please call Julie Defago on Freephone 0800 849 7744. In the next issue Julie will discuss the benefits of Private Health Insurance for companies.

The Barrister Broker - reducing your legal costs choosing the ‘right’ lawyer for your needs is a really big deal. Don’t make the mistake of assuming that just because someone is a qualified lawyer (solicitor or barrister) that they are going to be right for you. Happy New Year readers and I hope you’ve all been enjoying the festive season but now it's almost time for everything to get back to normal.

In my role as The Barrister Broker I get asked many different questions so I thought it would be useful to include the most frequently asked questions that I have had over the last 12 months. If you have a question not covered here, please feel free to give me a call and ask! What makes using a barrister through you different to finding my own one on the internet? Just as with any profession some people are more effective than others and unfortunately by the time you find out how poor or incompetent someone is it’s usually too late! Therefore

42

I remove the ‘guesswork’ to choosing the right lawyer. I will provide you with a highly experienced Barrister from my panel; someone who I have worked with before (sometimes for many years) who has a proven track record and who I know has the necessary skills and experience that you will benefit from. Although you’re known as The Barrister Broker, are you a barrister? No, I am not legally qualified and therefore cannot give legal advice. My background was working as a Barristers’ Clerk in London for over 20 years (ever seen the TV series Silk?) so I have extensive experience working with barristers and facilitating their services to clients. I thought barristers could only work with solicitors, is this not the case? No, not any more. The rules

Please call 01732 864 878 to feature your business

changed several years ago to allow a client to be able to go direct to a barrister without the need to go to a solicitor first. What is the difference between barristers and solicitors? It’s essentially training and skill sets. Solicitors are licensed litigators and conduct the process of litigation, i.e. project-managing a client’s case, completing court forms, issuing court applications, lodging documents with the court, corresponding with the other side and the court, giving legal advice, etc. Barristers are specially trained legal advisers and court room advocates. They are selfemployed, independent and objective lawyers, trained to advise clients’ on the strengths and weaknesses of their case. They have specialist knowledge and experience in and out of court, which can make a substantial difference to the outcome of a case. Solicitors and Barristers are both Lawyers, which is simply a generic term used to describe anyone who is a Licensed Legal Practitioner.

The Edenbridge Directory  January/February 2016

• When you pay a Barrister you are paying for their time and expertise, not the cost of running a solicitor’s office; • Barristers have special legal knowledge which means they generally deal with the issues more quickly; • ‘Fixed Fees’ enable clients to know the cost in advance of agreeing to have any work done – completely transparent with no nasty surprise bills later on! The idea of taking ownership of my own case sounds rather daunting can I get assistance from you if I need it? Yes I can provide support in a number of different ways. For many of my clients emotional support is crucial – always having someone available at the end of a phone to talk to when something arises or

things are getting tough can be very reassuring - often in divorce and separation and child custody matters. I can help you keep organised such as complying with any deadlines, printing documents and generally helping you to keep your paperwork in order. I’m half way through a legal issue – can I contact you to see if I may be better off finishing the process with one of your barristers? Yes you can and frankly I would urge you to give me a call to talk your matter through. I have had a number of situations where people have already spent considerable sums of money on their legal matter but don’t feel they are getting value for money for whatever reason so they stop using the solicitor and come to me. I arranged for a barrister to advise and represent them and despite the client having changed legal representation, I still saved them money on what they would have spent had they remained with the solicitor, and in some of my

cases this has run into thousands of pounds saved!

Business Feature

How will using a barrister help me reduce my legal costs? There are a number of reasons that make barristers a much more cost-effective legal solution compared to solicitors. For example:

I have a court hearing coming up, will I be able to use one of your barristers to represent me? If I can help you I will. You need to give me a call to tell me about your case, when and where the hearing is and we can take it from there.

Visit my website www.thebarristerbroker.com and see what my clients say on the Testimonials page. For the most cost-effective and expert legal advice and representation available, call me on 01732 866 562. I will be able to save you money.
