The Crowborough Magazine • March/April 2020

Note from the Editor... Dear Readers, With spring around the corner, bulbs sprouting up all over the garden and blue skies overhead, I’m already thoroughly enjoying this new decade. The calendar pages are filling up nicely with many events to keep you entertained. There are concerts, markets, workshops, movies and more to enjoy over the next couple of months. If you make it along to the Crowborough Expo at the Community Centre on Tuesday 31st March I’ll be there doing the rounds. It’s a great opportunity to meet the local businesses who operate in the area and find out more about what they are doing. I’m always amazed at the variety of local businesses there are. It’s easy to spot the ones on our high streets and in the business parks but there are hundreds more who operate from their homes (myself included) that are more difficult to know about. It’s one of the reasons I love doing this magazine to give them the opportunity to have a ‘shop front’ in the local community. Please remember that the community pages are FREE for local groups, organisations and charities to promote themselves, their events and good work. Just email your content to me and I can include it in the relevant issue. It’s not just about the events that are taking place but I love to feature the good work of some of our local organisations such as the Crowborough Locomotive Society who run the miniature railway at Goldsmiths. Read all about them on page 35 of this issue. As always, please do mention ‘The Crowborough Magazine’ if you are responding to anything you’ve seen in this publication as it helps to secure it’s future. The next deadline is Friday 3rd April for the May/June 2020 issue which will be distributed during the last week of April. In the meantime, enjoy the Easter holidays, this year Good Friday is on the 10th April, and I look forward to receiving your content requests for the next issue.

Civil partnership now available for mixed-sex couples - By Yasmin Iqbal In October 2018, Theresa May announced that the law would be changed to allow mixed-sex couples in England and Wales to enter into civil partnerships. The government stated that this would address ‘the imbalance’ that permitted same-sex couples to choose between getting married and having a civil partnership but didn’t provide mixed sex couples with the same choice.

When it comes to ending a civil partnership, the ‘dissolution’ process is similar to marriage, except adultery cannot be used as a reason for the dissolution. For further information or assistance, please contact Yasmin Iqbal on: yi@dawson-hart.co.uk or any member of our Family Team.

Monday 2 December 2019 was the first day that mixed sex couples could register their intent to enter into a civil partnership. As the minimum period of notice for a civil partnership is 28 days, mixed sex couples who registered their intent on 2 December 2019 could enter into a civil partnership as of 31 December 2019. Civil partnerships are not dissimilar from marriages, in that those in a civil partnership benefit from the same rights as married couples in terms of tax benefits, pensions and inheritance. Unlike marriage, there are no religious connotations attached to civil partnerships and so they are ideal for non-religious people or people who don’t want to align themselves with a particular religion.

When in the late sixteenth century, the humble tulip bulb made its way from China to the courts and gardens of the Ottoman Empire, its beauty and rarity were greatly admired. Its fame spread, triggering a collecting craze in early 17th century Holland

where speculation caused some rare varieties to reach staggering prices. In 1637 the tulip market collapsed leading to the impoverishment of many speculators who had over-invested in the promise of untold riches. Tulip Mania can be seen as a parallel to what has happened on occasions in the art market. Come along to hear all about it. Arts Society Ashdown Forest members free, visitors £6. Crowborough Miniature Railway Easter Opening 2020

We enjoy the full support of Crowborough Town Council who have always been very helpful in making our growth and development possible. Most significant in this was their invaluable assistance in obtaining a strip of land in the field adjoining the railway in order to make possible the construction of an extension to the original oval which ran around the Millennium boating pool.

“The Crowborough Miniature Railway, located at the Goldsmiths Recreation Ground in Crowborough, will be re-opened by the Town Mayor on Good Friday, April 10th 2020 for the start of the new running season. Crowborough Locomotive Society was established in 1989 and has built and operates the Miniature Railway at Goldsmith’s. The railway is open to the public on Saturday afternoons from Good Friday until Bonfire Night in November. It is also open on all bank holidays during the running season and is a non-profit making organisation welcoming everyone to join in from the young and not so young, families, friends and visitors for a ride around our recently extended track. Our opening times are 2.00pm. - 5.00pm.

This major work took from 2014 to 2018 to complete and more than doubled the length of the train ride. The able bodied members who carried out the bulk of this work and who are now not quite so able bodied, can look on their achievement with great pride and satisfaction. To share this development with fellow townsfolk and visitors is a most rewarding experience and we look forward to meeting as many of you as possible over the coming months once this dreary winter is behind us. “ - Neville Watts, Crowborough Locomotive Society You can find out more about the Locomotive Society and Miniature Railway by visiting their website: www.crowboroughminiaturerailway.com

The passenger trains are hauled mainly by steam engines with diesel outline locos to add a more modern image and to help out when steam is being temperamental. We hold many special events during the running season including children’s birthday parties on Saturday mornings, school and junior club visits and afternoon sessions to help local charities raise money for their contributions to deserving causes. info@crowborough-magazine.co.uk • www.crowborough-magazine.co.uk | 35
