July/August 2015  The Edenbridge Directory

Dear Neighbours, I can’t believe we are midway through the year already, the summer solstice has been and gone, and the next season we’ll be welcoming in

will be autumn! As I’m writing this I’m still waiting for the heat wave to arrive which they keep promising on the news.

The last couple of months have been busy. Many of you know

that I like to get out and about as much as I can to support the local events taking place. I put my dancing boots on for a Rotary Dinner Dance recently at the WI Hall.

I may not

have won a prize for my fancy dress efforts (the theme was

black & white as you might have gathered from the picture)

but I had a wonderful evening out with friends. The Rotary Club were

fund-raising on the evening for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation

and in total raised £715 for this good cause.

Among other things Russell and I attended a preview evening of an exhibition by the Eden Valley Artists at the TopFoto Gallery on Station Road.

We were delighted with our purchase of a

textile piece titled “Litter Bug” by Anne McCarthy - an absolute bargain and it looks very smart hanging in our hallway. Those of you who have been living in the area for a while will most likely remember the restaurant “Honour’s Mill” which is now an office to local company Nautilus Yachting.

I thought

it would make the perfect venue for a Chamber of Commerce business networking event so I

teamed up with owners Howard and Nicola Richardson of Nautilus Yachting,

booked Larmar’s Catering and we had about 30 local businesses attending.

The evening was a great success. If you are part of a local business and would like to come along to one of the Chamber events then simply send an email to networking@edenvalleyb2b.co.uk and I’ll add you to the mailing list.

I received this picture recently from readers Peter & Di Kingham who were trying to read their copy of the Directory only to find their puppy Jessie, had taken over ownership of their magazine.

So, if your family pooch is preventing you from reading your

You may remember my announcement in the last issue about my new radio show which launched at the end of April. I’ve now produced 6 shows

and the show is going from strength to strength. It’s about all things community,

charity and fund-raising taking place in Kent and on the county borders. I’ve been promoting Edenbridge rather

a lot on the shows, even having local guests into the studio such as Symone Salwan from Home Instead Senior

Care who is also a local dementia expert and we have some more

guests from the area lined up over the coming months. It’s an

at www.thecommunityshow.net. Along with my husband Russell (The Barrister Broker) as co-presenter, we are having a great time working on the show together.

If I say “Handelsbanken” you may be mistaken to think I was speaking to you in German. This is certainly not the case, Handelsbanken is in fact a Swedish bank with branches across the UK. I met up with Sevenoaks Branch Manager Nick Brooker to find out more about what makes Handelsbanken different and what exactly are they giving away for this issue’s prize crossword? Handelsbanken will be a new name to many people. How does its approach differ from traditional high street banks? In some ways it doesn’t. We are a full service bank with a comprehensive range of products and services similar to any of the high street banks. I guess the main differences are the quality of our service and the personal and bespoke element we offer all of our customers. Plus the ease with which people can contact us, discuss their needs and get a decision. So no call-centre or ‘dial one for...’ approach? That’s right. All of our customers deal with us directly through our branch in Sevenoaks irrespective of size or needs. They also speak directly to decision makers which is a major factor. Is your target market business customers, private individuals – or both? It is very much both. We don’t just cater for niche businesses or high-net worth individuals as is sometimes assumed. Our product range will suit anyone, whether business or personal, looking for a long-term banking relationship. In reality the bespoke element we offer often suits people who may have less straightforward banking needs and who want something tailored for themselves.

Handelsbanken - a different way of banking

What about security? Is Handelsbanken a safe and secure place for people to deposit their money? Handelsbanken has been around since 1871 and is a very solid, prudently run organisation. We are very proud of the strong reputation we have in our market and this view is shared by those who monitor and assess the banking industry in general. We offer the same deposit protection scheme as other banks although ours is Euros 100,000 and is underwritten by the Swedish government. You have been open for business in Sevenoaks for a couple of years now. How has the response been so far? We have been very encouraged to date, attracting many local businesses and private individuals from the area, looking for a genuine long-term banking relationship. Many from the TN8 area in fact have heard about us, often through friends or associates and have become customers. How important for you is it to be part of the local community in which you operate? This is a big factor for us. We have already formed strong ties with some of the schools, sporting associations and cultural events in the area and will generally continue to support local community events and services where we can. We are also members of both the Sevenoaks and Eden Valley Chambers of Commerce. . Finally, I am pleased you have offered a prize of a ‘Fika’ hamper for our current crossword competition (pg 50)...but what exactly is ‘Fika’? Well, Fika is a Swedish tradition which, in simple terms, means coffee with cake. It is one of their traditions that we have been very happy to adopt in our Sevenoaks branch. So the lucky winner can look forward to a basket full of delicious Swedish goodies!

upon the shape of your new brows and this is no quick process - in fact more than half the time I spent with Gillian (about an hour) was simply getting the shape right before anything else could start. The treatment I am having done for this issue is the most transforming yet, so I did take some time to think about it. The treatment? Eyebrow tattooing or “WoW Brows” as Gillian has nicknamed them. There may be a number of reasons why you would possibly consider having your eyebrows tattooed such as: over plucking, cancer treatments resulting in loss of hair, pale brow hairs or simply to redefine the shape of what you currently have. The first part of the treatment is to decide

Once I was happy with the shape, I then had the numbing cream applied so the process wouldn’t hurt. I may have looked a bit like an Ooompa Loompa but from my previous treatments I know this cream is fantastic at reducing any pain that might otherwise be felt.

Next Gillian removed the stray hairs from around my eyebrows (although not touching the whited out part at this stage www.edenbridgedirectory.co.uk

So what does it feel like? Well, thanks to the effects of the numbing cream all I could feel was an uncomfortable sensation but no pain. A couple of times throughout the process Gillian reapplied the numbing cream to one side while she worked on the other side. There was a redness around my eyebrows following the treatment which was to be expected but it soon went down. The healing process is very straightforward. Gillian runs through the do’s and don’ts and gives you a sachet of vitamin A & D ointment to help the healing process. After about 4 days the scabs which had formed over my eyebrows had disappeared and the only telltale sign was a few dry skin patches across my brow so

I continued to apply the ointment for another couple of days. You can see how they look in the before and after pictures below. I feel like I have been given an eye-lift! Fiona Dashwood Couture for the perfect fit

The first thing I asked local ladies fashion designer Fiona Dashwood when I popped in to see her at her studio in Marlpit Hill was - what is couture? “Couture,” Fiona told me “is an individual design of which there is only one.” This is what you get when you go to Fiona for an outfit - you’ll not have to worry about anyone else turning up with the same one! There are obvious reasons for visiting a designer such as for a wedding dress or outfit for mother of the bride/ groom (Fiona has designed a great many wedding outfits over the years) or any other special occasions and celebrations. One of her clients had a visit to the Queen so needed something extra special. Fiona trained at St Martin’s (now Central St Martin’s) in fashion and her first job was as a sketcher to the designer for well known fashion label Jaeger. Some readers may also remember her high street shop in Oxted which she ran for 13 years before closing it in 2013. Fiona has picked up many regular clients after creating that first outfit for a special occasion. So, just what is the process you go through when you see Fiona for a bespoke outfit? Firstly, size is never discussed - in the world of couture, clothes are not designed to a particular “off the peg” size but specifically to fit the client and it’s only those measurements Fiona is interested in. Fiona also needs to understand what occasion the outfit is for and how much freedom of movement her clients need. e.g. will they be dancing? All this information will help determine how the garment will be created to ensure flexibility and strength is incorporated for ease of movement. While you sit in the studio, Fiona will be busy sketching during the discussion and also looking at the best features the garment can draw upon to really compliment her client.

Of course her client will often have her own ideas as to what features she would like the outfit to emphasise. The second stage of the process is for the design to go to Fiona’s Pattern cutter who cuts all the intricate pieces in calico. This is made into a toile, which is a complete mock-up of the finished garment and is used to ensure that the measurements, shape and fit are correct. At this stage any adjustments can easily be made to the design before cutting in to the final fabric. So, how to choose the fabrics for your outfit? Fiona has a large selection of swatches in a multitude of colours and styles in her studio to choose from. She also takes some of her clients on a shopping trip to London to a huge fabric emporium which is also frequented by many top fashion designers to make choices there (and it’s rather fun too). Fiona likes to make sure there is plenty of time allowed for creating the outfits and completion usually takes place just a couple of weeks before the event date in order to allow for any variations in size by the client. As much as possible, Fiona will source her materials from British suppliers, and locally where possible. Each outfit is made using quality materials and created to last. This is just one of the differences you find when paying for handmade garments. Of course it will be more expensive but it will last you many more years. Rather than designing clothes in line with the latest fashions, her clothes are designed with style in mind so they won’t go out of fashion. So, if you have a special occasion coming up or need a new wardrobe for work, make Fiona Dashwood your first stop. If you can’t make it over to her studio for your consultation she’s quite happy to visit you at your home. Call Fiona on 07887 617 449 or visit www.fionadashwood.co.uk.

Edenbridge Primary School Summer Fayre Saturday 4th July 11am-2pm “Edenbridge Primary School will be hosting its Annual Summer Fayre on Saturday 4th July. The PTFA are planning lots of pocket money stalls and attractions to entertain all ages, including a bouncy castle, music and arena events. There will also be a children’s fancy dress competition (favourite film star/character), entry open to all! A BBQ, Ice cream van and other refreshments will all be on hand to quench everyone’s hunger and thirst throughout the day. We are planning what we hope will be a fantastic community event to which everyone is invited and we hope to see you there.

The school values the part it plays in the community and recognises the success it has with all its events is reliant heavily on community member support. We are currently seeking raffle, auction and stall prizes. Are you a local business or community member who is able to provide a voucher or gift to be used at the fayre? Or why not take the opportunity to sponsor a stall and have full company advertising displayed at the event. Any donations that are received are highlighted in our programme, last year over 200 were distributed and, as such, you can expect to reach a wide audience within our community. If you feel you are able to support our school fayre by way of a donaton, voucher or cheque (made payable to Edenbridge Primary School) please send it directly to the school marked for the attention of PTFA Summer Fayre. Should you wish it to be collected please contact the school on 01732 863 787 or office@edenbridge.kent.sch.uk. Thank you in advance for any support you may be able to give us.”

Headway in west kent launches new services community drop-in and buddy project Headway In West Kent – the brain injury association – has launched a new Drop-in service at The Eden Centre, Four Elms Road, Edenbridge. The drop-in is a social space for people over the age of 18 who have been affected by a brain injury. Visitors are warmly welcome to drop in for a drink and a chat with people with similar life experiences, or sit quietly to read a newspaper. Families, carers and friends are welcome to attend. A wide range of information will be available with staff and volunteers on hand to give advice and signpost to alternative Headway services and external organisations. There will be a regular programme of speakers to provide specialist information about their services and support available. Edenbridge swimmer a success in Scotland! Edenbridge swimmer Catriona Robertson has come fifth in Scotland’s national swimming championships. Catriona, who swims for Edenbridge Piranhas Swimming Club, based at Scencio Leisure Centre, took on the might of Scotland to make it to the final of the 100m freestyle, with just one and half seconds between her and the winning time. The 13 year old swimmer who lives in Edenbridge, also came ninth and 17th in the 50M and 200M freestyle respectively. Catriona who joined Piranhas aged eight was eligible for the Scottish Championships through her Scottish father, Bruce and was only accepted after meeting tough qualifying times.

Edenbridge Piranhas coach, Pete Lawrence said “Catriona did amazingly well – especially as she was injured for the last three months of her preparation”. “Catriona is the first swimmer we have had in a national competition and it just shows how far the Club and Catriona have progressed over the last few years and also how small clubs like ours can produce quality and potentially national competitors with the backing of the local community.”

The Barrister Broker - reducing your legal costs What a successful event the recent Edenbridge Hospital Fete was. Not only did most of Edenbridge seem to be present but the sun was shining and everyone was having fun. The Edenbridge Rugby Club were selling delicious hot dogs and the queue to their stall didn’t seem to stop! Congratulations to all those who took part in the organisation – you did the Hospital proud.

I have been especially busy over the last couple of months now wearing two hats; one working with Laura as copresenter of The Community Show which she presents on Channel Radio. For those readers who haven’t picked up on this yet, we present a live radio show every Thursday between 1011am covering all things community, charity and fundraising across Kent and the county borders and we give mentions and promotions to community events, etc. This is internet radio and you can tune in to our show at www. channelradio.co.uk.

are their legal expertise and lower cost. With much lower overheads than solicitors and different ways of working, barristers make a very cost-effective and value for money legal solution indeed, as my many client testimonials on my website show. Take a look at www. thebarristerbroker.com. Whilst the vast majority of my work relates to “who gets what” following divorce or a non-married relationship breakdown (i.e. the distribution of the family assets - house, car, money, etc.) and child arrangements (contact and residence of the children) my latest success involved the driving offence of speeding. A gentleman contacted me in urgent need of legal advice and representation at Sevenoaks Magistrates Court. He was charged with driving at 103 mph on the M25 (Clacket Lane). It was not his intention to dispute the charge but he obviously wanted to avoid a driving ban as speeds over 100mph are in line for a ban.

I arranged for my client to have a meeting here in Edenbridge with a senior barrister specialising in road traffic law a couple of days after our initial phone call, who then represented him in court a few days after. Thanks to the barrister’s expert knowledge and skilful mitigation, the result was that the client avoided a ban altogether. Mission accomplished. As one might imagine, the client was relieved beyond belief and extremely grateful that I had arranged matters My second hat of course is as The Barrister not only so quickly but had given him a barrister Broker, helping people avoid the cost of who, in the client’s own words “knew exactly solicitors by providing them with an alternative what he was doing”! way to deal with their legal issues quickly and For a local, compassionate and professional cost-effectively. Howard Cundey Estate Agents Passion for property and the local community

Elliott Dyer is an Associate Partner with Howard Cundey Estate Agents in Edenbridge who brings to the office a passion for property, fresh new ideas and an enthusiasm which is contagious; he loves character properties because throughout his childhood he lived in Grade II listed houses and he always wanted to be an Estate Agent. An ambition achieved!

There are some interesting facts about Elliott that not many people know and now would be a good time to share them with you: Elliott plays in a rock band as lead guitar and backing vocals, he is also a fine artist and paints in oils and pencil and he loves archery! Since his appointment at the beginning of 2014 he has thrown himself into the Edenbridge community, supporting local schools and other organisations and this is the second year that the office is sponsoring The Edenbridge Piranhas swimming club. Last year Elliott and Dan Berrisford, Senior Partner, turned up to present a cheque to the club and were surprised by the youngsters who pushed them fully clothed into the pool! As proud sponsors of The Kent, Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance, all Howard Cundey offices hold a coffee and cake morning every year to raise donations. Elliott has been known to go the extra mile and in this photo he put on the Air

Ambulance mascot outfit and took to the High street. His love of property is evident in his everyday activities and he knows that nowadays with so many agents to choose from making the right choice can be difficult. “Buying a house is one of the biggest financial investments you will make. Here are what I believe to be some essential factors to consider when making your choice; Ideally your agent will have a passion for property and for delivering a personal and meaningful service combined with a good knowledge of the area, the locals and trends of current buyer behaviour. Your agent should value your home based on properties that are actually selling in the area. You do not want an overpriced house sitting around for long periods of time or one under priced for a quick sale. For me the service and care you will receive from a high street agent far outweighs that of an online agent. Dealing with your agent face to face makes all the difference. The stresses and strains that come with moving and the impact it has on people’s lives cannot be expressed via email or text. At Howard Cundey we also have dedicated sales progressors which is vital in looking after a sale from offer to completion. It can be incredibly reassuring to know the situation of everyone in your chain and that problems can be dealt with immediately keeping the sale in place.”
