PRINCIPAL’S WELCOME Dear Student If you are aged between 16 and 18 and want a successful career in construction, you’ve come to the right place, so please read on! There has never been a better time to join this exciting industry, with so many companies currently looking for talented people to join their workforce. We are the only specialist construction college in the UK and we recently opened Europe’s most advanced construction campus in Leeds, which means we really are the best in the business when it comes to construction. So, if you fancy a study programme or part-time course, or an apprenticeship where you earn while you learn, this is the right place for you. Some people want to learn a trade that will benefit them for the rest of their life, and others want to study for a professional level qualification so they can work as an architect, engineer or project manager and others do both!

Even if you’re unsure about the trade or career that’s right for you, our advisers can work out the best possible courses and careers that they think you will enjoy and do well at. HOW TO APPLY FOR A STUDY PROGRAMME Follow these steps and build yourself a bright future! 1. Application

Apply for the course you want to study online, in person or by post. You can fill in the online school leaver application form or download a printable version from our website. You can also apply on the UCAS Progress website – your school should be able to provide login details for this. We can help you with your application. Please call 0113 222 6002 to discuss it further or alternatively come into the College and a member of the Student Services team will be able to go through it with you.

You will receive a letter inviting you into the College to find out more about the course you want to study and make sure it’s right for you. This is also your opportunity to tell the College why you will make a great student as well as finding out everything you need to know about College life.

2. Assessment You will receive a letter inviting you to sit a BKSB assessment in English and maths. Please note your pass rate will also determine which level course you start on. If you’re applying for a building services, engineering, construction & the built environment or civil engineering course you will be invited to an information day.

4. Offer You will receive a letter confirming that you have been offered a place. Your place is subject to receiving satisfactory references from your school or college and obtaining the entry requirements.

5. Enrolment We will send the enrolment information to you in the post including a date for you to come in and enrol.

6. Start Date You will either receive your start date when you enrol or a letter will be sent in the post to you.

If you pass the skills assessment, you will receive a letter confirming that you have been offered a place. We then meet your employer to ensure they meet the correct health and safety requirements. Remember, we will need your GCSE results or predicted grades and your National Insurance number.

STUDENTS’ UNION

SPORT AND ENRICHMENT

The SU organises loads of social activities including sporting events, outdoor pursuits and fundraising challenges as well as regular trips to Alton Towers, Go Ape, Pole Position Indoor Karting and paintballing. They also offer advice on college life, health and wellbeing as well as representing student opinions and views.

A wide range of activities are available, from basketball to boxing and guitar club to golf! These include:

All of our students over the age of 16 automatically become members of the College’s Students’ Union (SU). You can also apply for a National Union of Students (NUS) Extra card which will entitle you to discounts at many retail, food and entertainment outlets.

You can have as much or as little involvement with the SU as you want. There are lots of ways to be a part of the work of the SU and if you really get into it, you might even choose to become the President, Vice President or Sports & Entertainment Officer.

Student Reps Student Reps are really important because they represent you. They are a group of students that work with the College’s Governors to support and develop all areas of the College, share the views and opinions of students and ultimately improve your experience. Any student can put themselves forward to be a Student Rep.

Student Ambassadors Student Ambassadors represent and promote the College by attending key events and sharing their College experiences with people considering joining the College. This looks great on your CV and you are rewarded for your time.

Volunteering Opportunities We offer a huge range of opportunities for students to step out of their comfort zone and make a difference by volunteering in all types of areas like charities and sports clubs. As well as making you feel good, it enhances your CV and if you do it often enough, you could even complete a valuable coaching qualification, alongside your day-to-day studies!

HELP AND ADVICE Student Services It’s important you feel safe, happy and get the most out of your time at College and this is where our Student Services team can help. All full-time students are allocated a Personal Adviser who will regularly meet with you, monitor your progress at College and help you wherever possible. Everything the Student Services team offers is free, confidential and includes the following: • Admissions • Careers information and guidance • Applications for employment or higher education

The Inclusive Learning Service is a team of specialist staff who are committed to working with individual students to help them overcome any barriers to learning they might face. They can work with you to develop your own Individual Support Plan and find ways of working that are unique to you and designed to meet your needs. The team have lots of experience of working with young people with additional learning needs including Dyslexia, ADHD, ESBD, Dyspraxia, moderate learning difficulties and Autism. But, most importantly, they see beyond a diagnosis and get to know who you are and understand how best they can help.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT If you are aged between 16 and 18, your course is free! Half Fare Bus Pass If you are aged between 16 and 18, you are eligible for a half fare bus pass, which can be used throughout West Yorkshire. For more information contact Student Services on 0113 222 6002.

Bursary Fund This fund helps anyone who is facing financial hardship to stay in full-time education. If you need financial support to stay in education or training and have a household income of less than £20,000 per year you can apply for the Bursary currently £300 per year. Those most in need will be eligible for a Higher Level Bursary of up to £1,200 per year to help with expenses such as transport, food, equipment and other course related costs. The Higher Level Bursary scheme is open to young people in care, care leavers, young people receiving income support and disabled young people receiving both employment support allowance and disability living allowance.

Free Meals Free meals are available to some students who qualify for Bursary. Eligibility for free College meals will be determined upon application of the Bursary Fund.

Will there be any additional costs? On some courses you may require stationery, protective clothing, drawing equipment and optional educational visits. Discounts are available from local suppliers and the Student Services team can give you further details on this.

If you have a Grade D in either GCSE English or Maths or both you will have to undertake GCSE English or Maths at College to try and obtain a Grade C or above.

English, Maths and ICT skills are really important in both life and the construction industry when it comes to working out measurements, prices, quotes, interpreting site plans and communicating with customers.

You can study for these at the same time as doing your course and we’ll give you all the help and support to achieve the GCSE grades you need. Whatever level you are currently at, we can help you improve. Full-time Courses

Apprenticeship Training Courses

Our full-time courses all offer a high quality study programme that will give you the best chance of progressing into lasting employment or further training opportunities. If you have not achieved a GCSE grade C in English and maths, you will continue to study these subjects, at the same time as your course, in order to maximise your career options. Throughout the course you will also be able to take part in our wide range of enrichment activities as well as valuable site visits and work experience, giving you even more opportunities to develop your skills.

If you are aged 16 or over and feel ready to start work and earn a salary, but still want to learn and get qualifications, then an apprenticeship could be perfect for you. You will need an employer and in some cases we can help you with this. There are lots of vacancies listed on the National Apprenticeship Service’s website at www.gov.uk/apply-apprenticeship.

Part-time Courses As well as our full-time courses, we offer a fantastic selection of part-time BTEC courses in building services engineering, civil engineering and construction and the built environment. These courses are perfect for anyone who wants to study for a qualification at the same time as working or maintaining other commitments. The course you choose could relate to your current job, or you might have decided to learn something new and broaden your horizons by developing new skills and gaining a qualification. Once you have finished your course, you can put your newfound skills into practice at work, or continue studying for a HNC Diploma, a HND Diploma, a Higher Apprenticeship or a degree level qualification. What is a Higher Apprenticeship?

Higher Apprenticeships work the same way as a traditional apprenticeship and combine a work based learning programme with a nationally recognised qualification but at a high level, which is usually NVQ Level 4 or 5. They offer a route into professions that used to only be available to graduates, such as engineering, facilities management and architecture, and are a genuine, debt-free Depending on the apprenticeship, you will alternative to university. After completing an apprenticeship, you might consider moving on to an Advanced Apprenticeship. This will take you to an advanced level of training, which is usually NVQ Level 3, and it includes a higher level knowledge based qualification. Some courses are only available as Advanced Apprenticeships. These include building services, civil engineering, electrical, gas installation and facilities management.

What are the entry requirements?

Full-time You must have achieved the Level 2 Diploma in Carpentry & Joinery to commence the Level 3 Diploma in Bench Joinery.

What’s it all about?

Bench joiners are based in a workshop and produce timber products such as doors, window frames, staircases and cabinets. They use traditional woodworking tools as well as specialised power or hand tools for cutting, shaping, smoothing and finishing.

What skills and qualities do I need?

+ A careful, methodical and accurate approach to your work + The ability to follow drawings, plans and written or spoken instructions + A creative eye

How much could I earn?

Qualified bench joiners earn between £18,000 and £25,000 a year. With experience, this can rise from £26,000 to over £30,000 a year.

What are my study options? + Full-time + Apprenticeship

Apprenticeship All applicants will be required to pass an assessment. You must have achieved the Level 2 NVQ Diploma to commence the Level 3 NVQ Diploma.

How long is the course?

You could progress from a level 2 to a level 3 qualification. There is also the opportunity to progress onto higher education at the College.

What’s it all about?

Refrigeration and air conditioning engineers could work on one of two broad areas. Refrigeration engineers design, install and maintain cooling systems in places like supermarkets, restaurants, hospitals, food processing plants and factories. Air conditioning engineers install and service the systems that control air quality, temperature and humidity inside offices, schools, leisure complexes and other modern buildings.

Roof Slaters & Tilers work on new roofs, repair work and refurbishment (stripping old roofs off and replacing them with new roofs). This can be done using a variety of methods, from large format concrete tiles with a covering of 10 tiles per m² to small formats with a covering of 60 tiles per m². The work can range from a small repair to a house extension.

What skills and qualities do I need?

How much could I earn?

Wall & floor tilers fix tiles on the walls and lay tiles on the floors of buildings including hospitals, shopping centres, swimming pools, industrial premises or bathrooms and kitchens. Tilers usually work with ceramic, porcelain and natural products including marble, granite, slate and terracotta. They also follow plans drawn up by an architect, builder or designer.
