2004 Hydro ax 721 E is in excellent condition, it has only had two owner/ operators its entire life. It has a 8.3 cummins engine, and the machine itself has around 6000 original frame hours. New upgrades include a new windshield, new batteries, and new blades and teeth on the mowing deck. There are no leaks, and all of the pins and bushings are very tight. Unit Includes a bunching head and mower deck. The tires are size 28L and are basically new. And it includes a set of chains for the front tires. 95 Timberjack 450C Grapple / Winch Skidder. Has a Prolenc snubber that was installed in October 2014. Installed a reman Cummins engine (purchased from Cummins) that now has only 1,800 hours on it. New “Heavy Duty” radiator was installed at the same time as the engine. Both rear-ends have been re-built. Transmission has been rebuilt about 4,000 hour ago. Center pins have been replaced and are tight. New suspension seat. Has no leaks / machine is dry all over. The hour meter reads 3,900 hours but previous owner said he replaced the meter at around 4,000 hours so machine is around 8000 frame hours. Has heat but no air conditioning. Mechanic Hurt While Changing Dual Tires On Feller-Buncher

On a clear, sunny morning in the Southeast region, a mechanic was attempting to remove the front dual tires of a feller-buncher at a shop. The tire configuration consisted of a 30.5-inch inside tire and a 24.5-inch outside tire.

The mechanic was well-trained and had been working for the logging company for over six years. He had previous employment experience as a mechanic for several different employers throughout his career.

UNSAFE ACTS AND CONDITIONS

The mechanic failed to use the crane mounted on the service truck for support and did not use a ‘safety bolt’ while performing the tire change.

ACCIDENT

The mechanic parked the service truck near the feller-buncher so he could have access to the air compressor and tools needed to perform the tire change.

The 800-pound tire knocked the mechanic down and landed on top of him, pinning his waist and legs to the ground.

He was pinned under the tire for about an hour until a truck driver arrived at the shop and discovered the mechanic lying on the ground under the tire.

The truck driver grabbed a nearby pry bar and was able to lift the tire enough to enable the mechanic to crawl out from underneath it. Emergency personnel transported the injured mechanic to a regional medical center, where he was diagnosed with a hip and pelvis fracture.

Forest Service Over-Counted Projects to Reduce Wildfire

The U.S. Forest Service for years has over-counted areas that it treated to reduce the risk of wildfire, according to an analysis by NBC News.

Forests evolved to endure, and benefit from, occasional wildfires, which occur naturally as part of an ancient cycle. People disrupted that cycle by suppressing fire in the Western U.S. for roughly a century. Now, wildfires that once would have crawled across small areas increasingly turn into huge, deadly blazes. To prevent those massive fires, the Forest Service reduces their potential fuel — thinning trees, removing debris and lighting planned fires.

The inflated figures provided by the Forest Service to Congress deprive those making funding decisions of knowing the true scope of the challenge, experts say.

The Forest Service estimates that 63 million acres of its land are at high risk of catastrophic wildfire — an area the size of Oregon that accounts for a third of all national forest acreage, most of it in the parched West. However, legislators and oversight agencies have been pushing the Forest Service since the early 2000s to shift its focus to tracking progress in ways that better reflect how risk is reduced. The agency has been promising to do so for nearly as long, introducing several different “outcome” measures over the years.

“For years, pretty much everyone in the system has been saying this [main] measurement is not good enough, and we think we can do better,” said Courtney Schultz, a professor of forest and natural resource policy at Colorado State University who has conducted research with the agency on fire risk reduction. But the shift away from it has yet to happen. With all the new investment from Congress, she said, “now is the time to do that.”

This year, the Forest Service laid out new plans to focus on outcomes and ramp up treatments four-fold in the West, reducing risk on 20 million acres in the next decade. But 20 million acres treated and 20 million acres of land protected are two very different measures.

DroneSeed uses seeds as well as seedlings, or young plants, from its own nurseries. It then uses heavy-lift drone swarms to spread them across the scorched land.
