U.S. Hardwood Exports Fall

U.S. foreign trade of hardwood lumber has declined sharply in 2023. Exporters have struggled to compete on price against alternative species in most offshore markets this year. Meanwhile, fading demand in the U.S. has impeded imports, traders say.

Hardwood lumber exports to offshore destinations fell to 1.56 million cubic meters

through August, down 21 percent from the first eight months of 2022. At the current pace, exports will decline to the lowest volume since 2011, according to statistics from the U.S. Foreign Agricultural Service.

Imports plunged 32 percent through August to 241,436 cubic meters. The steep decline so far in 2023 maintains a roller coaster of

Industry Group Seeks Supreme Court Ruling

Does the president have unfettered legal authority to indefinitely suspend or cancel the operation of a federal law established by Congress? That’s a question the American Forest Resource Council is asking the U.S. Supreme Court to answer.

The council and the Association of O&C Counties –a group of counties in western Oregon – filed a joint petition for

a writ of certiorari with the court. It seeks review of the Obamaera expansion of the CascadeSiskiyou National Monument and the Bureau of Land Management’s 2016 Resource Management Plans (RMPs) for western Oregon O&C lands.

The 2016 RMPs and the inclusion of the O&C lands in the Cascade-Siskiyou Monument “preempted the mandates and priorities established by Congress” and has resulted in a measurable decline in those benefits, he added. “The O&C Act should be restored to its original Congressional purpose.”

The O&C Act requires the bureau to manage O&C lands for permanent forest production on the basis of sustained-yield, meaning that each year BLM is to harvest the volume of timber that is grown by the forest during the same year so that harvest levels can be sustained in perpetuity.

Oregon Company Adding Hardwood Sawmill

PHILOMATH, Oregon – Patrick Lumber Manufacturing has begun work to add a hardwood sawmill at its manufacturing facility in Philomath, Oregon. It’s an unusual move given that the vast majority of mills in Oregon process softwoods such as Douglas fir and Ponderosa pine, the state’s most common tree species.

However, while softwoods dominate, the forests of Oregon and Northern California also contain large volumes of Oregon white oak, Pacific maple, tan oak, madrone, chinquapin, myrtle, and Oregon ash. Attempts by other companies to develop markets for these species have mostly failed, other than a few mills that primarily cut alder.

With no commercial outlets for the hardwoods, the trees have become a nuisance for land managers working to improve forest health and are an increasing component of wildfirethreatened overstocked stands.

“We saw a real opportunity here,” said Patrick Lumber CEO David Halsey, “We can produce and market products that are in demand while also making it possible for forest managers to more economically perform activities that further the health of our forests.”

“One of the greatest barriers to enhancing forest health and resilience is a lack of management enforced by a paucity of processing infrastructure…Because of the absence of this infrastructure to provide revenue opportunities to offset management costs, needed management activities are often unaffordable,” wrote CAL FIRE’s Chris Lee.

Court Scraps Montana Logging Because of Bears

A federal judge in Montana ruled in favor of conservation groups and scrapped the massive Black Ram logging project in Kootenai National Forest. The project threatened a small and imperiled population of grizzly bears near the Montana-Canada border.

“This is a great win for the wild forests and grizzly bears of Montana’s spectacular Yaak Valley,” said Ted Zukoski, a senior attorney at the Center for Biological Diversity. “This decision affirms that agencies can’t ignore the vulnerability of this small but critical population of grizzlies and can’t turn a blind eye to the climate harms of clearcutting mature forests.”

The falling stem struck the driver on top of his hard hat. Upon impact, the driver’s hard hat was knocked from his head. The driver retrieved his hard hat, entered the cab, and proceeded to the crane to be unloaded. He did not intend to report the incident; however, another driver who was waiting in line to utilize the unbinding rack witnessed the entire incident and notified the scale operator. The scaler caught up to the driver to check on his condition and discuss the incident. The driver indicated he was a “little sore” but otherwise fine. He refused medical attention but mentioned that he was now a firm believer in always wearing a hard hat.
