College Faculty’s Skills in Facilitating Student Learning: A Framework for Faculty Enhancement Maria Nancy Q. Cadosales marianancy_qc@yahoo.com La Salle University - Ozamiz Philippines 1:30 – 1:50 August 18 – Ballroom C This study evaluates the college probationary faculty’s skills in facilitating student learning. They come from the seven colleges and one school of La Salle University, Ozamiz City for the first semester of the academic year 2008-2009. A framework for faculty enhancement was designed based on the findings of the study. The present study reveals that the faculty across the seven colleges and one school show very satisfactory mastery of the topics they teach. Moreover, the findings reveal that the students rated the college faculty very satisfactory in the way the faculty asks good questions that develop their critical thinking, discusses how lesson can be applied to their practical life situation and experiences, utilizes instructional time productively, and teach clearly with a voice loud enough to hear by everyone. However, there is a need for enhancement trainings and seminars for the college faculty especially on variety of teaching techniques and strategies to make the lessons more interesting and challenging, and using instructional materials and audio-visual aids. When grouped according to colleges, it was found that the College of Education was the only college whose faculty was rated outstanding.

The study assessed the organizational effectiveness of LPU using the Malcolm Baldridge Assessment Instrument which defines organizational effectiveness in terms of seven categories, namely: leadership, strategic planning, customer and market focus, measurement, analysis and knowledge management, human resource focus, process management and business results. The study employed the descriptive survey method, where 37 department heads, 28 admin personnel and 59 faculty members served as respondents. The study revealed that both leaders and subordinates agreed that LPU is making progress in terms of the seven categories. The leaders and subordinates had congruent perceptions on the organizational effect leaders of LPU when tested by individual criteria, the leaders were found to have higher perceptions in the areas of employees’ knowledge of the school’s mission and vision and who their important customers are and in soliciting subordinates when planning. Enhancement measures were proposed in the area of process management, measurement, analysis and knowledge management.
