D i re c to r ’s No te Hello friends! Welcome to Little Shop of Horrors in South Park. For some of you, this may be the first live theatre you have attended in the past year and a half. For others, it may be part of a continued journey in re-investigating our world. Either way, we are glad that you are here. However you may be feeling, thinking, and navigating these days, we are honored that you chose to spend time with us today. The performers, musicians, and crew that you are about to witness have worked with great effort and energy to create this show over the course of just 14 days of rehearsal. A step further, they have built community, drawn trust-centered boundaries, asked hard questions, and negotiated the many variables of outdoor performance. As you watch today, we invite you to laugh loudly, cheer anytime you want to, and do plenty of dance-wiggling in your seat throughout. Thank you to Rachel, Justin, Sadie, Jen, Annika, Colton, Samaria, and Elizabeth for doing all the things. Many thanks to Jungle House for bringing our set to life with fabulous plants. Sadie Barbee (ASSISTANT DIRECTOR) is a young professional creative and performer who has worked in the theatre industry for more than five years. She has taken on many roles on and off stage. Sadie has stage managed, taught musical theatre intensives, written original performance pieces, acted and directed. She was a member of the creative and performance team for the Lawrence Arts Center’s Theatre and Dance for the Very Young Atmosphere production in January 2020. She also took on the comedic role of Ms. Teavee in the Arts Center’s musical production of Willy Wonka in October 2019. Her most recent work at the Arts Center was her February 2020 directorial debut for The Vagina Monologues: Liberated Sisters, where she not only directed, but also acted and wrote two original monologues for the production. In March 2021, Sadie, along with a team of seven actors, dancers, and musicians, devised and performed an original production titled Until Time, which transformed their London home into an immersive performance experience. Sadie is so honored to be back at the Arts Center and couldn’t be more excited to be involved in Summer Youth Theatre. Kiefer Bullock* (ASSISTANT TECHNICAL DIRECTOR) will be a freshman at Lawrence Free State High School. His love for the performing arts dates back to his early elementary school years. Since then, Kiefer has performed in productions including Schoolhouse Rock Live! (George), Mary Poppins (chimney sweep), and Robin Hood (Prince John). When not performing, you can find Kiefer building sets with the Lawrence Arts Center tech class or mentoring children at Theater Lawrence. Kiefer continues to sharpen his performing skills through piano, singing, and all things theater. Samaria Fleig (STAGE MANAGER/PRODUCTION MANAGER) graduated from Emporia State University with her BFA and has found her home here in Lawrence. She loves all areas of the theatre both on and off the stage: performance, scenic design, lighting design, and stage management. She spent five years in California working with Coast Kids Theatre, New Vision Theatre Group, and the Star Theatre Company. She is very proud of the work she’s been able to do with young theatre technicians here at the Lawrence Arts Center and looks forward to creating more magic in the future. Justin Harbaugh (CHOREOGRAPHER) has earned degrees in music from Emporia State University and Kansas State University, and a doctorate in clarinet performance from the University of Kansas. He has choreographed productions for several Kansas high schools, including Emporia and Goddard. Justin has danced onboard Holland America Cruise Line, performed with Music Theatre of Wichita, at the Sands Casino in Atlantic City, and the Tanzsommer festival in Austria. In addition to being on the dance and theatre faculty at the Lawrence Arts Center, Justin owns and operates his own private clarinet studio. He’d like to
thank his parents for their endless love and support, and his amazing dance teacher Kari Kohls-Bruch for instilling a lifelong passion for dance. Lizzy Hill* (ASSISTANT TECHNICAL DIRECTOR, LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS) is going into her junior year at Free State High School. Outside of theatre at the Arts Center, she is part of orchestra, choir, theatre, and thespian club. She is excited to be working as an intern and has had a lot of fun this summer. She hopes to do it again next summer. Jennifer Hosler (REHEARSAL & PIT PIANIST) has been a piano instructor for more than 20 years and holds a degree in music education from the University of Kansas. As an employee of the Lawrence Piano Studio, she teaches group and private lessons to students of all ages and abilities. Her professional experience also includes three years as an elementary music teacher for Kansas City, Kan., public schools as well as her current position as the accompanist for Oskaloosa Jr/Sr. High. Ben Knight (SOUND ENGINEER) is a Toronto-born musician and sound engineer rooted in Lawrence with a passion for education and public health. His work on touring productions has led him to multiple arts centers across the country including Brooklyn Academy of Music, Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, and SFJAZZ, as well as arts centers in Australia, Canada, Chile, China, England, Germany, Mexico, Taiwan, and the United Arab Emirates. He currently spends the majority of his time at home with his partner, Philip. Gordon Marvin* (PROPS MASTER) began at the Lawrence Arts center in July 2017 at the age of 11 working as a junior tech, where he did lighting for the SYT production of Charlotte’s Web. He ran crew for A Kansas Nutcracker in December 2017 and 2018, Wizard of Oz in 2018, the SYT production of The Little Mermaid in 2018, Goodnight Moon in 2019, and was props master for the SYT production of The Odyssey in 2019. This is Gordon’s second year as an SYT intern, as well as his second time as props master. Annika Maximov* (ASSISTANT STAGE MANAGER) is a sophomore at Lawrence High School. She grew up in a music-loving family. Her first production was Annie in 2009 and her passion for theatre grew from there. Some of her favorite theatre experiences have been Oliver!, Matilda, and Camp Broadway in New York, and of course, the Lawrence Arts Center’s Summer Youth Theatre. Annika is excited to be an intern and assistant stage manager for Little Shop of Horrors his year!
Rachel Naughtin (MUSIC DIRECTOR) (she/her/hers) Since moving to Lawrence in 2013, Rachel has become an active performer and educator in the area. She is currently the vocal music teacher/choir director at Baldwin Junior High and High School. She loves music directing and teaching at the Arts Center, and maintaining a thriving private voice studio has been one of her greatest joys. She previously taught general music in the area for five years at schools including Pinckney, Woodlawn, and Kennedy elementary schools in Lawrence and Highland Park Central & Randolph elementary schools in Topeka. Rachel is a member of Vox Nova Chamber Choir based in Columbia, Mo., and has also performed with Te Deum Chamber Choir, Lawrence Opera Theatre, Kansas City Opera Institute, and the Kansas City Chorale. In 2013 Rachel completed a Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance at the University of Missouri where she was also a voice teaching assistant. She earned a Bachelor of Music degree with majors in Vocal Performance and Choral/General Music Education from Lawrence University Conservatory of Music in Appleton, Wisc., in 2011. In addition to her studies at Lawrence, Rachel was a member of the College Light Opera Company (Falmouth, Mass.) in summer 2010 and attended the Bel Canto Institute in Florence, Italy, in summer 2009. She is thrilled to be back music directing/conducting Little Shop of Horrors for a live audience for her fifth summer of SYT! Tevin Mershon* (ASSISTANT TECHNICAL DIRECTOR, SCHOOLHOUSE ROCK LIVE! JR) has been a theatre technician in shows at the Lawrence Arts Center and Free State High School for the last four years. Since 2018, he has been a youth theatre intern at Lawrence Arts Center. Tevin’s aspirations include being a theatre carpenter, and he is looking forward to studying theatre at State Fair Community College in Sedalia, Mo., in the fall. Amelia Osborn* (ASSISTANT COSTUME DESIGNER) (she/her/hers) is a recent graduate of Free State High School where she was involved in the choral, orchestral, and theatre programs. At the Lawrence Arts Center, Amelia has participated in the Summer Youth Theatre Leadership Program for the past four years. She was also a member of PLAY12, the Lawrence Arts Center’s youth performance company, and is a technical theatre staff member. Most recently, Amelia performed in Splash!, a devised performance for the Lawrence Arts Center’s Theatre and Dance for the Very Young program, and was the assistant director for Summer Youth Theatre’s Schoolhouse Rock LIVE! Jr. In the fall, Amelia will be moving to Chicago to pursue a BFA in Theatre Management from The Theatre School at DePaul University.
Amanda Pintore (DIRECTOR) (she/her/hers) is a director, choreographer, and educator focusing on movement and dance education, devised theatre, and making theatre and dance performances with and for 0-6 year olds. She is the Associate Director of Performing Arts and Education and the lead coordinator for the Theatre and Dance for the Very Young program at the Lawrence Arts Center. She has an MFA in Theatre for Youth from Arizona State University. Colton Smith* (ASSISTANT DIRECTOR) was born and raised in Lawrence and has been acting since he was 16. In addition to acting, he has directed three one-act plays, and co-directed a reader’s theatre at the Kansas State Thespian Festival in 2019. He would like to congratulate this amazing cast for working so hard to create such an incredible show in only three weeks. You guys rock! Elizabeth Sullivan (ARTISTIC DIRECTOR) has an MFA in Theatre for Youth and K-12 teaching certification from Arizona State University. She is a community-based artist, teaching artist, director, and performer. Elizabeth acted with The Seem-To-Be Players, a nationally touring children’s theatre troupe. She served as the choreographer, lead facilitator, and actor for MADE Garden, an interactive art and play installation for young children at Mesa Art Center’s SPARK! Festival for Creativity. She worked as Asphalt Art’s Resident Artist at Phoenix’s Tumbleweed Center for Youth Development, where she led homeless youth in poetry, spoken word, drama, performance, and digital storytelling. Recently she directed, facilitated, and performed in the Arts Center’s production of Rethink: I Am a Veteran, an original storytelling project focused on women veterans, as well as directing this past spring’s staging of The Snow Queen. Jamie Urban (COSTUME DESIGNER) (she/her/hers) is a costume educator, technician, and designer originally from Kansas. She has had the opportunity to work in the industry at several professional companies across the country such as Ballet Austin, Chicago Shakespeare, and the Huntington Theatre. Jamie is currently the Costume Shop Manager at the University of Kansas and holds an MFA in Costume Production from Boston University. Elliot Yochim (CO-TECHNICAL DIRECTOR/SCENIC DESIGNER/TECH TEACHER) has a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts from the University of Kansas studying Theatre Design. Theatre has been Elliot’s passion since childhood, when he was a student of the SYT program.
