The Linda Reimond Preschool and Kelly Galloway Kindergarten Exhibition showcases imaginative works by Lawrence Arts Center early childhood students. Through fearless creativity and collaboration with professional artists, actors, dancers, and musicians, these young artists reveal their creative confidence, providing a rare glimpse into the roots of imagination and inspiration.

HANG 12 | TRANSFERRED INSPIRATION: BREAKTHROUGH

Curated by the Lawrence Arts Center’s teen curatorial collective, Hang12, Transferred Inspiration: Breakthrough highlights artwork created by Lawrence High School and Free State High School student artists in workshops inspired by the creative practices of Arts Center artists-in-residence Dehmie Dehmlow and Rachel Beer. After working alongside the residents at the Arts Center, students developed original works at school utilizing their newly learned skills and techniques.

The annual USD 497 public schools show features works selected by art teachers of K-12 students from across Lawrence. Showcasing a cross-section of the diverse, excellent visual arts programming in Lawrence Public Schools, this exhibit spotlights the value of arts learning and the importance of Fine Arts programs in public education.

2023-24 Printmaking Artist-in-Residence

Rooted in the aching present, Vital Encounters extends an outstretched hand towards the small, weedy spaces within our bodies and landscapes that are routinely deemed deviant, disposable, and unworthy of attention. This work combines the subtle language of drawing with the spontaneous nature of monotype printmaking to amplify the significance of these often-overlooked encounters.

ROSA LEFF | STORYDWELLING

Rosa Leff creates papercuts by hand from a single sheet of paper using a knife. Her cityscapes are based on photos she’s taken in her neighborhood and worldwide, including Lawrence. Some of Lawrence’s most unassuming, most unlikely, most mundane-looking places are where Black history was made – places where we forget to listen to the whispers of the bricks and porches. The papercuts in this exhibit flood us with stories that were once everything to someone who called Lawrence home.

NIKI DIONNE | THE PEOPLE WE PASS

Niki Dionne brings faceless representations of Black women to life with a unique blend of illustration, oil pastel, and needle felting techniques. Her art delves into the intricate interplay between self-perceived identity and how it influences the self-perception of Black women. Having grappled with her own identity, each creation bears a part of Niki, extending an open invitation to viewers to discover echoes of themselves within these relatable figures.

DEHMIE DEHMLOW | I’VE DECIDED.

2023-24 Ceramics Artist-in-Residence I’ve decided. is a collection of Dehmie’s prints, textiles, and pottery. Her work is based in storytelling and often weaves common themes through the different media she works in. Dehmie’s work playfully references utility by using a wide range of salvaged materials and carefully fabricated objects. This exhibition will culminate the work Dehmie has created during her tenure as the Ceramics Artist in Residence at the Arts Center.

We’re off to see the wizard! After a tornado whisks her away to the magical land of Oz, Dorothy and her newfound friends — a Scarecrow, a Tin Woodsman and a Cowardly Lion — team up to find the mighty Wizard of Oz, her ticket home. Along the way, they must avoid the clutches of the Wicked Witch of the West, who is after the mysterious magic slippers on Dorothy’s feet. Story by L. Frank Baum. Music and lyrics by Harold Alen and E.Y. Harburg.

Commissioned for home production and national tour by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

In this hilarious parody of a familiar story, three potential heroes try to make it through a magic school that proves to be very dangerous for children. Alongside them are the Puffs, a group of well-meaning, loyal outsiders with a thing for badgers. Their epic quest takes the classic story to new places and reimagines what a wizard hero can be. Written by Matt Cox. Puffs is not authorized, sanctioned, licensed or endorsed by J.K Rowling, Warner Bros. or any person or company associated with the Harry Potter books, films or play.

2024 LAWRENCE DANCE INTENSIVE

LDI returns to host a series of programs for contemporary and ballet dancers.

Dancers must be ages 10-21 by the start of the intensive and dancing at an Intermediate/Advanced level with at least two years of prior dance experience. No pre-screening or audition is required to attend. Learn more about LDI, including scholarships and financial aid at lawrenceartscenter.org.

Auditions are held each year for company members and apprentices. To be considered for LBT, applicants must attend a formal audition. Pre-registration is required. The deadline to register online is June 6.

Lawrence Ballet Theatre (LBT) is the resident pre-professional ballet company of the Lawrence Arts Center. LBT provides extensive training and performance opportunities while broadening connections to the dance community. Led by Artistic Director Cynthia Crews, company members gain experience through performances of classical ballet repertoire and original works. LBT dancers work directly with professional guest choreographers and the artistic director.

Make Local Yarn: Spinning and Dyeing

Take locally grown wool from farm to yarn: skirt and scour a raw fleece, prepare the fibers and spin them into yarn, then mordant and dye your yarn with local dyes from the yard, garden and kitchen. Open to all levels.
