THANK YOU! Renovation of the 10th and Mass Studios was made possible by the Sunderland Foundation, The Ethel and Raymond F. Rice Foundation, Black Hills Energy, the Douglas County Community Foundation and private donors. We are excited to fill the walls of 10th & Mass Studios with arts education, performances and creative community experiences. Join us!

WELCOME TO

A new space expanding accessibility to the arts. The Lawrence Arts Center’s primary location at 940 New Hampshire has long been bursting at the seams, and we’re excited to welcome you around the corner to 10th & Mass Studios. While disappointing the children’s play place, Laugh Out Loud closed, the opening provided the perfect location for the Arts Center to keep the creativity flowing in Downtown Lawrence! The experts at Sabatini Architects and BA Green Construction led the charge to renovate this unique space. It now includes a dance studio and performing arts space, providing relief to overflowing classes and programming. COME CHECK IT OUT! These are just a few of the opportunities you have to take classes or attend events in the new space this fall: • Social Dance — Learn the fundamentals of Salsa, Cha Cha and Waltz with a partner (page 14) • Sensory-Friendly Music Exploration — Designed for neurodivergent children in the community (page 6) • Microcinema Film Series brought to you by Free State Festival The official address of the space is 1000 Massachusetts St., Ste. D., however, the front door faces 10th street between New Hampshire and Massachusetts streets — just around the corner from the Lawrence Arts Center! The doors will only be open to the public during scheduled events or programs, but feel free to peek in the windows and sign up for a class.

THE LAWRENCE ARTS CENTER MICROCINEMA

NEW! AT 10TH & MASS STUDIOS

This all-new monthly film series presents independent films in innovative settings by the team that brings you Free State Festival. The Microcinema is fresh, fun and full of gusto with live music, engaging panel discussions, and delectable food and beverage pairings. Watch the Lawrence Arts Center events calendar starting in September as filmmakers and partners are confirmed! The Lawrence Arts Center’s Microcinema film series is supported in part by the Kansas Creative Arts Industries Commission, which receives support from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.

AUG 5 - SEPT 10

WE’RE NOT IN TEHRAN ANYMORE | ELENA MASROUR Elena Masrour’s work is inspired by the proliferation of religious propaganda over the last half-century in her home country, Iran, and the social changes following the Revolution. She represents a generation of Iranian people who aspire to be modern when religious leaders continue to weaponize the rules of God to maintain control. This body of work represents some of Masrour’s most recent paintings and is her first showing in Lawrence.

AUG 5 - SEPT 10

THE WAY WEST | NICK GADBOIS Nick Gadbois’ surreal landscapes are taken from scenes in everyday life with a strange or otherworldly quality. The artist thinks surrealism is more than a genre of art – it is a condition of existence. There are moments when one becomes aware of the strangeness of life, and this is an experience of surrealism. His work focuses on altered landscapes and cultural emptiness. The basis of his paintings are photographs that go through a digitization process to reduce the visual information in a scene. The colors in his works push to reference memory, emotional states, climate change, nuclear reality and artificial life. Rather than inventing surrealistic scenes in an illustrative way, he paints scenes from real life that already appear surreal.

SEPT 16 - OCT 29

ITEMIZED | ELIZABETH MORISETTE Morisette is a fiber artist living in Fort Collins, Colo. She focuses on using the leftovers from our society and making them into art using classical fiber techniques like basket making and weaving. These works often surround a theme of environmentalism and social constructs. She began working on this installation in April 2020 during quarantine for the COVID-19 pandemic while making 600 cloth masks for health care workers. Morisette saved all the fabric scraps to start a meditative series of quilted sculptures called “Anti-Bodies.” While quilting, she contemplated the power of these cells to possibly be a “cure” of sorts, not only for the illness but also for our mental states. How do we “cure” both illnesses? While scientists work on biological “cures,” Morisete’s healthy mental process is contemplative making. art is for everyone .

INTRODUCING THE 2022-2023 ARTISTS-IN-RESIDENCE

SEE PAGES 22-24 FOR CLASSES AND WORKSHOPS TAUGHT BY TARO AND TWIGGY.

The Lawrence Arts Center welcomes two new Artists-in-Residence to our print and clay studios for 2022-2023. Annual residents work in our studios, teaching, doing community outreach and developing new bodies of work. They infuse our building with enthusiasm, extensive skills, and experience in ceramics and printmaking. They bring fresh ideas and new perspectives to our community and help spur conversations about contemporary practices in art and craft.

Visit with our new artists-in-residence to see their studios and view works in progress. Members of the Adult Education team will also offer free studio demos previewing fall classes.

Project-Based Resident: Yoonmi Nam

EXHIBITION AT THE NELSON-ATKINS MUSEUM OF ART | OCTOBER 2022

Like many during the COVID-19 lockdown, Yoonmi Nam stayed home, ordering takeout. The daily deliveries, consumption and disposal of the packaging became a routine; the act of unboxing and recycling became a ritual. Nam’s work confronts the idea of impermanence, material culture and the everyday. During her residency, Nam will make cast ceramic pieces using vacuum-formed packaging as molds. The collection will exhibit at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in October 2022. See page 22 for Yoonmi’s Monotype Workshop.
