Thank You Bishop Vasa!

In October, Cardinal Newman learned that because of DMV rules and notification from our Diocesan insurance carrier that we would no longer be able to utilize the six, white, 10-passenger vans that we owned. CNHS has been working with Justin Hansel, Class of 1992, from Hansel Ford to trade-in and purchase 7-passenger vans. With the help of a generous $20,000 donation from Bishop Vasa, and generous trade-in opportunities from Justin, we were able to secure five new Dodge 7-passenger vans! This solves our short-term needs, however, we still need to secure 2-4 more 7-passenger vans very soon! These vans are used to shuttle sports teams, in addition to carpooling students to and from Sonoma and Cloverdale areas! Would you like to sponsor the purchase of another van by making a gift to CN? We currently have $2750 towards Van #6 with each van estimated at $21,000. If you would like to make a gift in part or in full to help us purchase the remaining 2-4 vans, your generosity would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

IN THIS ISSUE A Root shall come forth from the stock of Jesse And a Flower shall rise out of his root! And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him — the spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the spirit of counsel and of fortitude, the spirit of knowledge and of godliness. The people that walked in darkness shall see a great light, For a Child is born to us and a Son is given to us. To Him all power shall be given. His Name shall be: Wonderful One, Strong God, Eternal One, Prince of Peace. He shall sit on the throne of David, And He will found a new Covenant which will last forever and ever. Amen

hat do workers gain from their toil? I have seen the burden God has laid on the human race. He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end. I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live. So I saw that there is nothing better for a person than to enjoy their work… Reflecting on the past three years, Ecclesiastes offers wisdom upon the challenges we have faced following the Ursuline closure announcement. With that date, November 9th, recently passed, we were reminded by the senior girls marking the day with recognition of their freshmen days at Ursuline, wearing their polos and sweatshirts, reading the St. Angela prayer to start the day; none of us want to lose the connections we shared for 47 years. The Ursuline Alumna Association has also been strong, hosting their Polenta and Crab feeds, now in our gym, for the benefit of the children of Ursuline graduates, female and male. The shared bonds have helped make for a good transition. One of my best memories after the announcement was meeting before Thanksgiving with the girl’s freshmen class officers and discussing what their concerns and hopes were for becoming CN students. Before Christmas they brought me the results of a survey they conducted amongst their classmates that had ideas on rules, dress codes, sports, activities, and hopes; many of those were blended into our January statements of goals for a new co-ed school. When I see them today, as at this year’s Open House for 8th graders, I remember their ideas and now see them sharing those with the ones following them; this is measurement of their integration and support, they are our students. Still, we have more work to do, though we have done a great deal in two years with classrooms, parking, equipment, eating area and kitchen, meeting room and service office, expanded stands, solar power, and a new, larger dance room. The plan to build a girls PE locker room is advancing and we continue to gather funds; we will start the work this year. Improved safety planning, communication and fire contact systems are going to be installed, complementing our automatic shutoffs for gas and electricity. Forced by changes to DMV codes and insurance to shed our larger vans, we have replaced them with new ones that comply, though we need several more to replace the seat capacity we had; another project we are working to fund. More exciting is the two million dollar pledge by the Finley Foundation for a new science building, for which plans are being drawn up now. With this addition, we will have more room space and even finer science facilities with many modern features. None of this would have been possible without the leadership and effort of our past President Mike Truesdell. For nine years, we were the extraordinary beneficiaries of Mike’s work, care, and love; he defined the job of President for us and took us to new levels of achievement. Mike connected to this community quickly and well, so much so that to many it seemed he had always been here; in a way he had, the school before President /Principal was different in methods and ways. He made us current and challenged himself and all others to move the school from good to great. We have much to celebrate and draw inspiration from as we go through another transition, one to a new president who will be able to do more due to the good work Mike did here. The new President inherits a strong team of people to work with, an effective system, and will have to work hard to match the quality if Mike’s work, the genuineness of his person, and the highest level of integrity; Mike was always true to his word, thought and deed. He loved his work here and I greatly enjoyed working with him; his encouragement of others, willingness to consider multiple ways, make tough decisions, and hold true to principals, stand out as the marks of a great leader. The Board has worked with the Bishop and Superintendent to conduct a wide search for our new President; they know the type of person, male or female, that we need. We expect the new President will bring skills and effort to help this strong school become even better; we know that person will enjoy their work here and make the work of others even more rewarding. What will this person gain from their toil? Being part of a community, an academic home, an activity center of young people who will go on to improve our world, who will be happy, and do good works. How can I know this? For in time, there is a season for everything; now is that time of change for us again. Graham Rutherford, Principal 2

CARDINAL NEWMAN HIGH SCHOOL

There is a time for everything. . . and a season for every activity under the heavens: a time to tear down and a time to build, a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, a time to keep and a time to throw away, a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak…

Cardinal Newman’s Search for the President

W

e are very excited that we have begun our search for a new President. One of the school’s first responsibilities was to identify a professional search firm to assist us in this all-important endeavor. We have chosen Educational Directions Incorporated (EDI) of Portsmouth, RI, a nationally-known and highly-regarded independent school consulting firm to work with us. EDI has carried out a significant number of leadership searches for all types of quality independent schools throughout the country. Mathew Heersche and Risa Oganesoff Heersche, who both have deep experience in Catholic education, will be the consultants working with us in the months to come.

Presidential Search Advisory Committee:

Teejay Lowe, '93

The first phase of the search was to conduct research on Cardinal Newman to understand its culture (i.e. the ethos of the school community), what makes it distinctive, its Catholic identity, its challenges and opportunities, as well as the qualities sought in the next President. Through this research, a position description was created as a collaborative effort with the Presidential Search Executive Committee and EDI. This position description, which we refer to as the Candidate Information Document, contains background information about the school, its culture and unique characteristics, the opportunities and challenges that will face the next President, and the professional and personal qualities sought. EDI will be recruiting candidates over the course of the next few months. Their work involves reaching out to Catholic educational leaders throughout the country, contacting national and regional associations and professional organizations, diocesan Offices of Education, utilizing EDI’s comprehensive database, and advertising in appropriate websites such as The Blue Sheet, an executive search report published by EDI, NCEA, and Catholic Educational Leadership programs at the University Level. Each prospect will receive a copy of the Candidate Information Document.

The next phase of the search, which will take place early in the new year, will involve the selection of semi-finalists from the candidates presented for consideration, and these individuals will be interviewed by the Presidential Search Executive Committee. From this group the finalists (typically three) are selected by the Presidential Search Executive Committee, and the names of the candidates will be announced to the entire school community. There will be opportunities for members of the community to meet these finalists and to give feedback on each during their two-day visit to the school. The Presidential Search Executive Committee meets shortly after the last finalist’s visit to review all of the information gathered throughout the process, including feedback from the Cardinal Newman community and deep reference checking, to deliberate and to make a recommendation to the Board of Trustees and to the Bishop. The Bishop has asked that the Board rank and present the top three candidates for his review and approval. The Board will then make an announcement regarding the new President as soon as possible after the Bishop has approved the candidate.

2013 ANNUAL REPORT

F

ollowing the close of the fiscal year on June 30, 2013, the partner from Lautze & Lautze assigned to supervise the audit of Cardinal Newman reviewed the preliminary statements. He expressed approval at the quality of accounting work represented. Several months later he presented to both the finance committee of the board of directors and the full boards of Cardinal Newman High School and Angela Merici John Henry Newman Foundation, Inc. the information contained in these pie charts. The complete audited statements can be found under the GOVERNANCE tab beneath ABOUT CNHS on our website. Lautze & Lautze confirms that we are succeeding in placing our resources where they belong: They are benefiting Cardinal Newman students. Compelling examples are provided by the fundraising support of parents, grandparents, alumni, faculty, staff, and benefactors whose names appear in this annual report. We must express deep gratitude to all.

ith more than 3,900 colleges in the United States, the college choices for Cardinal Newman students are vast. Last year’s graduating class included acceptances and commitment to colleges and universities in the United States, Europe, and Canada. Cardinal Newman’s college counseling department is dedicated to prepare all students to handle college admission essentials. In the fall we begin by hosting parent/student informational nights for each class level. Each counselor reviews what is expected of students during the school year and how they personally will help the students achieve their goals. Currently, Ms. Beverly Fuller is working with the seniors who are filling out college applications and searching for scholarships. Mr. Tony Greco is the Junior Counselor helping the juniors develop their college list and prepare for the college entrance exams. Mrs. Mary Euphrat is the Sophomore Counselor and Mrs. Elfi Bailey helps her and the other counselors at all class levels, meeting and working with students daily. Mrs. Tracy Williams is our Freshman Counselor helping the freshmen adjust to the personal and academic transition of high school. Our personal counselor, Mr. Ed Cutler, meets with students daily and works with those that have learning differences and accommodations. Ed and Tracy also work with our students in the Safe School Ambassador program, which helps to prevent, identify, and solve bullying issues on our campus. They also present an Anti-Bullying Curriculum in the freshmen religion classes. All of the counselors work hard to advise students to establish a strong academic foundation on their pathway to higher education. For the past four years, the Counseling Office has been able to host a number of college fairs and presentations on campus, which encourages college success and selection of the best college match for each student. This year we will again host the RACC Out-of-State College fair on January 29th in the Cardinal Newman Gym. The fair, with 45+ participating schools, is a great way to promote out-of-state options for students of California. This event is not only for Cardinal Newman students and parents but also for the community at large. Flyers and information sheets are sent to public and private high schools throughout Mendocino, Napa, Sonoma, and Marin Counties.

CARDINAL NEWMAN HIGH SCHOOL

Cardinal Newman is happy to have college admissions representatives from all over the country visit our campus throughout the school year. Students are able to hear the presentations and ask questions about academic programs, campus life, financial aid, and admission procedures. Our offices are equipped with computers for the students to use throughout the day for college and career planning. Naviance, our web-based college counseling program, helps students to build resumes, research careers, look for summer enrichment, and research scholarships and prospective colleges all beginning in freshman year. It is our goal in the counseling office to be a resource for all students and to help them achieve their goals with support and guidance all four years of their high school career, culminating with the college application process.

Pilgrimage of Faith

T

his year's freshman retreat theme centered on the theme of pilgrimage. The aim of the retreat was to help the freshmen understand that their high school experience, and life itself, is a pilgrimage; a journey during which they experience the presence of God and the support of family and friends. The actual journey to Cloverleaf Ranch also serves as an opportunity to strengthen the friendship and camaraderie of the class. The students gathered at the Cardinal Newman ACC with their pilgrimage group led by, in most cases, the same Link Crew leaders from freshmen orientation. The Link Crew, trained by Mrs. Alice Meyer, did an outstanding job in providing the freshmen with quality group facilitation. Faculty members also joined the groups and spent time getting to know their students outside the classroom.

Senior Campus Ministry class students Maggie Rei, Annie SwensonAguirre and Maddie Wilson helped prepare the day’s activities and led the opening prayer service. Their words of wisdom and careful planning sent the freshmen pilgrims out on their journey with the proper mindset. Groups posed for photos as they began their trek through our neighbors, the Sieberts, vineyards. Soon the freshmen reached their destination of Cloverleaf Ranch, owned by Class of 2000 alumna, Shawna DeGrange. The freshmen spent the morning enjoying the outdoors as they played games, spent time in reflection and shared in small groups to get to know each other better. The hungry pilgrims were welcomed back to Cardinal Newman with a lunch from Homerun Pizza served by parent volunteers Denise Faull and Nancy Murray. The retreat culminated in group presentations reflecting their retreat experience. All in all, the freshmen began their high school journey with a fun day of bonding and shared experience.

"I thought it was a really good way to get to know my class and get excited for the Cardinal Newman experience.” Catie Geib, ‘17 “After the retreat, I felt closer to other classmates.” Hailey Estabrook, ‘17 “When we first arrived at orientation we felt awkward. But once we started talking and doing the games and activities we worked together and became one.” Savannah Solley, ‘17 "I made a lot of great memories and met a lot of new people." Knots: Team Building, Leadership

Training & Theological Reflections

The Sophomore Class of 2016 followed tradition this September as they headed west to Alliance Redwoods Conference Grounds for their class retreat. The theme of "knots" reflects the main ropes course activities and focuses on the ties they make in high school, the challenges they each face and how they can build up and rely on each other in order to grow in faith and character. Experienced naturalists from Alliance Redwoods staff guided the students through both high and low ropes course initiatives. Cardinal Newman faculty and staff enjoyed the day outdoors getting to know their students outside the classroom. Faculty members spent time guiding the students in prayer and encouraging them through the ropes course challenges. Senior Campus Ministry class leaders were also on-site and helped with organization and peer mentoring. Surrounded by the beautiful landscape and redwoods of Occidental, the sophomore students were truly able to take a day to be in fellowship and community, relax, play and pray together.

Community-Based Service Learning Fair

W

e were so fortunate to have 31 non-profits represented at our annual Community-Based Service Learning Fair on August 26, 2013. Thanks to all representatives for taking a day with us! It was very heartwarming to see how some of our graduate’s lives have been changed by their service experience. In the photos below you can see Erin Shea, Ursuline graduate and Director of Cultivating Impact, and Chris Moreno and Justin Beach who spoke eloquently of their service travel to India with Love Manifest. We would like to thank all the wonderful parent volunteers who tackled the tarps, set up tables, served lunch, and baked cookies. Thanks to the advancement office for the loan of many materials and their cheerful guidance. Several teachers, staff and administrators gave their time to schedule, greet, and speak, while others diligently supervised students in the take down and clean up in the gym. What a team!

CBSL News

O

ur second annual CBSL Service Project Workshops held on Wednesday, October 16, 2013, were a great success. This year our senior class chose to have the following topics addressed by faculty and community members: •Elementary School Education: Ms. Judi Greaney, Mr. Glenn Mckevitt, Mr. John Contreras •Revising CBSL Research: Mrs. Eleanor Trent •Putting Your Heart into Your Project: Mrs. Catherine Eggleston, Mr. Jeff Scharfen •Where’s The Fun in my Service Project?: Dr. Maryanne Berry •How to Approach Adults: Mrs. Bernadette Calhoun •Fundraising Strategies: Mrs. Judy Walker, Mr. Ryan Smith •Event Planning: Mrs. Carol Drake •Clients and Families in Recovery: Mrs. Lisa Cox •Making Presentations: Ms. Bridget Paul The senior class was able to choose two workshops to attend in support of their CBSL Service Project efforts. Overall, seniors reported the workshops were insightful and helpful in addressing the goals set for their service projects. Ongoing CBSL News can be found in the weekly Principal’s email and on our school website under the Faith and Service Bar. We are very proud of our seniors and their service project efforts. Finally, thank you to everyone who helped make this day a success.

Much of the feedback indicates it was the best yet. Several non-profit representatives said they had now learned how best to support our students with a variety of service options from one-time events to fullyear commitments. Our students showed excitement about the variety of options and the non-profits reported record sign-ups.

Mother/Son Tailgate Brunch & Mass

I

Mothers and sons enjoying time together

n October, mothers and sons gathered together for the annual Mother/ Son event. Over the years, this has become a priceless time spent with our boys, with this year being no exception. After gathering together for a beautiful Mass said by Fr. Raul, mothers and sons made their way into the beautifully-decorated CN Gym to watch the 49er game and enjoy a Mexican food buffet catered by Chelino’s Mexican Restaurant. The food was excellent and plentiful. The boys enjoyed the candy bar and soda, while moms enjoyed the wine and champagne. Fun was had by all who attended! Thank you to CN Moms Paulette Gamba and Lindsay Mazur for planning this event. The Mother/Son Brunch is one of the many events offered by Cardinal Newman that adds to an already incredible high school experience.

he Cardinal Newman campus does not currently have a dedicated locker room facility for Physical Education and athletic team activities for our young women. We have launched a campaign to build a Women’s Locker Room facility within the current John Fitzgerald Gymnasium (East Side). The new facility will be designed as a space to honor the legacy of the past Ursuline High School alumnae and athletes and their greatest moments, teams, and coaches while providing a space for our current young women to prepare for athletic competitions and PE classes. The estimated cost of the project is $170,000 of which $70,000 has already been raised by Cardinal Newman students during the 2013 “Jog-A-Thon”. Our Locker Room Fundraising Goal is $100,000 to complete the new facility. All donors giving at the Recognition Levels below will be recognized on a high-profile plaque outside the new facility when gifts are made during the Inaugural Phase of this campaign November 2013 - July 1, 2014.

JUNIOR RING From Underclassmen to Upperclassmen

“On October 11, 2013, family, friends, faculty, staff, peers and the Class of 2015 joined together to celebrate the coming of the second half of our journey together. Our theme, “Rise Above, Change Within” was clearly portrayed throughout, with scripture and ceremony lead by Father Raul Lemus. In celebration of our accomplishments from the past two years and of becoming upperclassmen, each student received St. Christopher pins and we also received rings unique to our own personalities (if purchased). These items represented our unity as a class and as young Christians in our community. This experience was gracefully shared by members of the Junior class and it is sure to stay with us for many years to come.” - Julia Kennedy, Class of 2015

HOMECOMING

Associated Student Body & Homecoming 2013

H

omecoming is a time for alumni to return to their school to show their spirit, reconnect with old friends and teachers, and root their team to victory! In honor of this tradition, we examined the ladies in our senior class and determined who should represent our school at the game. The homecoming queen nominees are those young women who embody the spirit of Cardinal Newman; school spirit, a fun-loving attitude, charisma, and service. The 2013 homecoming princesses were nominated by the senior class. Congratulations to Sadie Schroeter, Jesming Liu, Lauren Anderson, Elea Davison, Emily VanMilligen, and Jennifer deRutte. The princesses were accompanied by their fathers and chauffeured onto the field in convertibles during halftime of the varsity football game against Maria Carrillo High School. Each princess was given a boxed rose. The Queen was voted on by the student body after the Homecoming Rally. Each young lady opened her box at the same time, and the recipient of the honor of Queen and the golden rose was Jesming Liu, one of CN’s international students. The ASB student leaders planned for months to put on a successful Homecoming Dance. On October 19th, “Suit and Tie ~ Bringing Classy Back” whisked our students away to fun music featuring DJ Dax, a live choreographer, a casino, a photo booth, and a lounge area to watch music videos while enjoying delicious snacks! An amazing time was had by all, faculty and students alike!

In December, ASB will host a Rose City rally to promote the Rose City Basketball Tournament hosted at Cardinal Newman High School. We will also help promote the Arts Alive! event which will take place in April, 2014. ASB’s final big day will be Day on the Green which happens in May – getting everyone excited for graduation and the end of another great school year. Overall, ASB will assist in promoting dances, games, rallies, and designing spirit memorabilia (Danger Zone and 6th Man shirts) – helping to keep school spirit alive year-round!

academic achievement Newman Oxford Scholar Program:

A

t the start of the fall semester, fourteen members of the class of 2014 accepted the invitation to push themselves by participating as Newman Oxford Scholars. The topic this season is Pope Francis moving forward the causes of John XXIII and John Paul II for sainthood. Scholars picked one of the past Popes and a role for their paper, which was due November 13th and posted online. From 1587 to 1983, canonizations were considered with the appointment of Church officials to make the case for or opposed to the nominee. The Promoter of the Cause (God's Advocate) and the Promoter of the Faith (Devil's Advocate) would present the arguments and the accuracy of possible miracles. Since 1983, the inquiry changed to using one Promoter of Justice, who evaluates the individual and the case. The students engaged in an academic discussion on November 26th, moderated by Jeff Scharfen, J.D. and also attended by past President Mike Truesdell, along with parents and teachers. There were several meetings for the students as they developed and shared their research with each other, giving them valuable practice in seminar methods. The following are the groups:

John XXIII Margaret Botka, Justice Manjari Daniel, Faith -Elea Davison, Cause Jackson Herrfeldt, Faith Matthew Payne, Justice Peyton Smith, Cause Emily Van Milligen, Cause

John Paul II Alexandra Dotti, Justice Ryan Johnson, Faith Mark Liu, Cause Russell Loube, Cause Sylas Montgomery, Justice Natalie Piazza, Faith Adam Van Prooyen, Faith

Newman Oxford Scholars strive to be thought leaders in the world. Like Blessed John Henry Cardinal Newman, they are passionate about the world of ideas. They are eager to help solve real-world challenges involving poverty and injustice. John Henry Newman, during his years at Oxford University, guided students to follow a rigorous academic curriculum. He encouraged them, through what became known as the Oxford Movement, to take a leadership role in working to improve society through the government and the Church. The Newman Oxford Scholar Program is designed to acknowledge both the exhilaration and the responsibility of learning. Newman Oxford Scholars will be presented with opportunities for learning beyond the classroom. In addition, they will develop their leadership skills. Students chosen to be Oxford Scholars are expected to: -Enroll in a challenging course of studies including Honors and Advanced Placement classes; -Achieve a 4.0 GPA every semester, or a year-end cumulative GPA which places them in the top 10% of their class; -Maintain the highest standards of behavior as prescribed by the school and affirmed by the Dean of Students; -Actively pursue to-curricular, extra-curricular, and service opportunities; -Serve as models for fellow Newman Oxford Scholars and for students in the entire community; -Participate in workshops and enrichment activities, ranging from lectures by academicians and Church leaders to community leaders pursuing social justice. Admission to the Newman Oxford Scholar Program is based on overall academic achievement and potential, standardized test results, grade point average, and teacher or counselor recommendations. Invited students will be asked to submit additional information.

Men’s JV Soccer

The Women's Water Polo team had a good season this year ending their season 2-2 in league. The team grew to 21 athletes this year which included its returning players of Gabriela Edman, Addison Edgar, Alissa Wankmuller, Ashton Smith, Ella Lorenzo, Sarah Meder-Reumann and Julia Kennedy. The team was lead by these returning players as well as standouts Celine Gallo and Marissa Garzini on offense and goalie Phoebe Sheahan on defense. The team will miss its three seniors McKenna Bell, Christina Brown and Sarah Meder-Reumann for their leadership and energy next year. We are looking forward to next year as it looks promising since the skill level on the team just keeps improving.

hat an exciting golf season for the Cardinal Newman’s Varsity Women’s Golf team! Our third year of play, we improved this year with 8 wins and 4 losses and placed third in the league. Three freshmen joined “the golf squad”, Megan Bianchi, Emily Pham, and Julia Reilly and their talents helped boost our success. Lexi Allen and Alex Gutierrez continued to improve their game. Senior Taylor Foster had some personal bests this golf season and qualified for the first time to play in the North Bay League Tournament at Rooster Run in Petaluma. Juniors Megan McConnell and Angela Chang, and freshman Emily Pham joined Taylor to represent Cardinal Newman at the tournament. Megan moved on to the NCS qualifier at Beau Pre Golf Course in McKinleyville, California, and after a foggy day on the course qualified as an alternate at the Tournament of Champions. Peacock Gap Golf Course hosted the T.O.C. and although Megan didn’t move on to the next tournament she represented Newman well. The Cardinal Newman Women’s Golf Team looks to be strong next year! Go Cardinals!

CROSS COUNTRY

Cross Country The men’s cross country teams were led by Anthony Rink, Steve Adams, and Andrew Reeder. The women’s teams were led by Cantlen Forni, Alex Dennen, and Merrit Geary. Although the record may not have been outstanding, the team is young and competed well. With only nine seniors on the team, the future looks bright for next year’s cross country team.

The Cardinal Newman JV Men’s Soccer Team had an enjoyable 2013 season. Led by captain, junior Spencer Jacobs, the team played hard and improved with each practice and game. As voted on by the players and coaches, sophomore Liam Green was the Most Improved, freshman Grant Wall was the Best Teammate, and freshman Rupert Holden the MVP. Head coach Mr. Smith would like to thank his assistants, Mr. McKevitt and CN alumni Chris Catelli, all the parents for supporting the team, and the players for their time and effort.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

JV Women’s Soccer It was a challenging season for the women’s JV soccer team. At the outset they faced a small roster, only 2 returning players, and 11 freshmen as a base that had never played together or in a high school game, making their transformation into a team-unit somewhat daunting. They dug in, however, and made it over some of the bumps on their way to become Cardinals, working together as a team. Although they didn’t have a winning record, they posted two impressive scoreless halves each against Maria Carrillo and Montgomery, unquestionably the two strongest schools in the NBL, playing outstanding soccer. Their wins versus Ukiah and Santa Rosa were some of the best soccer they played this season, as they dominated play on the field, taking the victories home. The team was invited to join with an even smaller Santa Rosa JV squad in pre-season to go up against the Alta High School Lady Hawks from Sandy, Utah, which has approximately 2,500 students, and whose varsity team has won eight state championships since 1999. It was an eyeopening experience for our girls as a first-ever high school game! Each player received a team soccer shirt from the Lady Hawks, and those were seen almost daily being worn during JV practices. The team improved steadily throughout the season, and their second half of the season was very hard fought. There was a great fan turnout for their games, and there is no doubt they entertained the crowd. In the end, this group of eclectic personalities became Cardinals together, and won, lost, or tied as a team, and will always have their teammates for support. It was another wonderful season for the Cardinal Newman record books!

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL

FOOTBALL

Varsity Volleyball

Varsity Football

The 2013 Cardinal Newman Varsity Volleyball team had another strong season finishing 3rd place in the North Bay League. The Cardinals will compete in the NBL playoff tournament and then head into the NCS Division 4 tournament expecting a top 5 seed. The Cardinals are led by senior Mimi Fowler averaging 20 digs per match, senior Juli Buehnerkemper averaging 9 kills per match and sophomore Ingrid Jungferman averaging 9 kills per match. The Cardinals finished the regular season with an 18-9 overall record and look forward to a strong post-season performance. The Varsity volleyball team would like to acknowledge the support of the parents, students and faculty in helping to create a positive environment for their student athletes.

Junior Varsity Volleyball This year's JV volleyball team posted an impressive 28-5 record with exciting year-end wins over Casa Grande and Windsor. Prior to league play, the team achieved first place finishes at both the Healdsburg and Sonoma tournaments. Kylea Langhals was recognized for her outstanding play by making the All Tournament team at Sonoma. Most importantly, the team learned to compete in the true Newman spirit, and were outstanding representatives of the school.

The 2013 football team has been an extremely dedicated group of young men, with the seniors showing tremendous leadership. Currently, as the varsity team continues its season with a 7-3 record, the team is seeded #5 in the Div. III NCS playoffs with their first playoff game scheduled against Sir Francis Drake High School. The coaches want to give a special thank you to the parents for their support of the coaches and program. We appreciate the many volunteer hours and team dinners that you made possible. Your time is greatly appreciated!

Junior Varsity Football This year’s Junior Varsity Football team completed a very competitive schedule with a perfect 10-0 record. The high-powered offense scored 294 points while the defense yielded only 51. Early in the season the team committed to each other on and off the field. We focused on maximum effort and becoming smarter players. There were too many great plays to single out any of the players, which would go against our belief of "TEAM" first. The varsity football future is very bright with the sophomore and freshman players in our program. Congratulations on a great season!

Freshman Volleyball The Freshman Volleyball Team had a great season this year. I am so proud of the girls' efforts and improvement over the season! With the loss of not one, but two setters during the season due to illness and injury, the team had to fight hard to stay competitive, and the girls did a fine job of coming together to play tough. We finished with a 7-7 record overall, and are looking to improve that next year. The team would like to thank the assistant coaches and all the parents for all of their support, time and effort on our behalf !

CHEER Cardinal Newman Cheer 2013-2014 has proven to be Fierce! The team began their year- journey in May with the tryout process and then attended two summer camps in July: UCA and Fierce. While UCA awarded them with several Superior awards and individual Allstar awards, Fierce progressed their stunt and tumbling technique and choreographed all their half-time and crowd performances. This team has successfully worked hard in uniting and building spirit throughout the Cardinal Newman community in both the school and our crowds. In January, the team will be attending ProBowl 2014 representing California-Sonoma County. Our goal . . . to be a competitive Cheer team by Fall of 2014.

or the past five years, Cardinal Newman athletics has participated in Breast Cancer Awareness fundraising in October. All teams at all levels participated in a fundraising “pink” competition. We had a pink ribbon logo painted on the main field, pink balls, and stickers. A pink tent donned our field selling pink food and items. The coaches, parents and athletes participated in the spirit of the cause. Our parent team representatives did an outstanding job coordinating their events with all of the pink details for their teams. Special thanks to our Booster President, Carol Drake, for taking the lead in the planning of these events.

Breast Cancer Awareness

This year CN raised $1,154.41, and this amount was donated to the Santa Rosa Memorial Foundation for the St. Joseph Health Mobile Health Clinic which serves the underserved and underinsured. The monies we raised will go directly to women's health issues. Over the past year the Mobile Health Clinic has provided diagnostic Cancer screening and detection to women by working with the “Every Woman Counts” Cancer Detection Program which provides free clinical breast exams, mammograms, pelvic exams and pap tests to California’s underserved women 40 years of age and older. In addition, the Mobile Health Clinic has diagnosed and referred patients with thyroid cancer, oral cancer and skin cancer for the definitive care they needed.

Keeping in Touch BRIAN KING

Class of 2010

As a Senior at Georgetown University, Brian King was named BIG EAST Cross Country Athlete as stated by the University. King was the top finisher for the Hoyas at the Navy Invitational where he finished second overall, leading six Hoyas in the top 10. King ran 24:09:39 over the 8,000-meter course that featured many hills and turns and was a tough route. The team looks to peak during the postseason. Congratulations to Brian! P HILIP “SCO OBY ” WRIGH T

Class of 2013

As a true freshman, Scooby plays linebacker for the Wildcats at University of Arizona. He finished his first college game with six tackles, tied for secondmost on the team, and has only continued to gain praise from his teammates and coaches . Head coach Rich Rodriguez said he’s amazed at his freshman’s natural instincts and believes he could put Wright at any position on the field and watch him succeed. Scooby is finally starting to grasp that he is a Division I starting player. CN is always rooting for you Scooby!

FRANK P IASTA

Class of 2005

Frank is currently an infantry officer in the Army and his combat deployment in Afghanistan is ongoing. Recently he was pinned with a Bronze Star. Congratulations Frank and thank you! GREG BRADLEY

Class of 1983

After attending his 30-year reunion, Greg sent this message . . . As I sit here tonight preparing to go back to the Arctic for my next shift; I find myself doing something that is unfamiliar to me; reflecting and looking back. I have spent so many years looking forward and moving in a progressive direction that for reasons being forged from intent or true focus, I have put my youth and its memories on a shelf. I now believe that those reasons and mind sets that have become such the norm within myself contributed greatly to the absolutely fantastic trip I just returned from to the base of my younger years. To see so many old friends, classmates, and teammates, as well as where it all took place truly was a blessing in disguise. Thanks to all for bright smiles, firm hand shakes, big hugs and open hearts.

Career Day

Alumni and CN Community Helps Make Career Day a Success!

C

ardinal Newman High School’s Career Day was held on Wednesday, October 16, 2013. Career Day is an opportunity for students to learn about a variety of careers and what it takes to be successful in college and beyond. Thirty-seven people, made up of CN/UHS alumni and our community, Keynote Speaker, Jerry Robinson '75 gave presentations to our students, grades 9 through 11, and discussed what inspired them to pursue their chosen careers, the educational requirements necessary, the rewards and what realworld problems they encountered. Along with bringing real-world experiences to the table, the alumni discussed the value of their education at Cardinal Newman and the paths they took to get where they are today. Keynote speaker, NFL Football Player Jerry Robinson ‘75, spoke about how important it is to enjoy what you do and to set goals for yourself and follow through with those goals. His message was to work hard and follow your dreams. These speakers generously gave their time to share their experiences and advice in classroom sessions. Thank you to everyone who participated in making Career Day 2013 a success!

A R T S AT N EW M A N

T

he 2013-14 school year promises to be one of the most exciting for the arts programs at Cardinal Newman. The Arts team of teachers has been augmented by the addition of Joey Castor who will be teaching all the Fine Art classes, including Freshman Art (9 weeks), Studio Art 1, Studio Art 2 & AP Studio Art. Joey is a “fine artist” himself and is quite a fixture of the Sonoma County art scene. His work has been exhibited in galleries and he also helps in the installation of large art projects in both northern and southern California. His MFA in Art from Mills College in Oakland, BFA in sculpture, and BA in liberal studies from Sonoma State are examples of his academic dedication. In addition, his professional art practice brings a contemporary perspective to the Newman community. His main focus is sculpture and installation art and that should prove very exciting to our Newman art students. One of our wonderful English teachers is quite an artist in her own right. Eleanor Trent has taken on teaching the Graphic Design class. Her connection with two different departments makes for a nice bridge between English and Art.

Carl Hamilton and the drama department are working on the Fall production of “Bomb-itty of Errors”. This is a high-paced, energetic, musical "add-rap-tation" of Willy Shakespeare's 'The Comedy of Errors'. Elizabethan times get pumped up with live hip-hop flavor in this hilarious, award-winning show. First performed Off-Broadway in New York, nominated for Drama Desk Award, Outer Critic's Circle Award, and winner of the Jefferson Award and Best Show at the HBO Comedy Festival, The Bomb-itty has played in Chicago, Philadelphia, London, Amsterdam, and continues to find new fans, audiences, and productions around the globe. This production is usually performed with a live DJ onstage, allowing actors to sing, rap, and rhyme fun, catchy, and laughout-loud songs. The show runs November 21-23, 2013, at the Wells Fargo Center. The cast has been rehearsing quite a bit for this show and they are excited. Gabrielle Thompson, CN Dance Director, is busy each day preparing for the Fall Dance Show which will be performed at Sonoma Country Day School on December 2, 3, 4. The show is called “Carnival of Dance”. These shows are always fun and the choreography is original and creative. Gabby’s use of music and lights in the show is always exciting and innovative. The dance shows are not to be missed! The students who have enrolled in the Rock Ensemble class are the school’s band. As such, they are performing at home football games

this year as they have for the last four years. In addition to bringing a full complement of marching drums, they also take most of the music room to the football field, including synthesizers and electric guitars. The Rock Ensemble is also performing during the Thanksgiving season at the Redwood Gospel Mission in Santa Rosa as part of a Thanksgiving banquet. On December 5th during lunch in the music room the students will perform for fellow students and faculty. On the evening of December 10th the Ensemble will be performing all the songs they have been working on in the fall semester, along with some Christmas music, in the music room. This will be an opportunity for parents to hear what their sons and daughters have learned in the world of music.

Thank you!
