here we started the year, where we went, and where we will go next are all reflections for the coming gap of summer. August seems distant, as does last August’s start, the first use of eight new classrooms on our campus. An expanded counseling center that doubled in size was made possible by our Advancement Office moving into a renovated office in the retreat center, was another change that started our focus moving to the lawn area, with a new pathway. In January, came the new food experience with an eating area under large solar panels, a structure built to generate power and provide cover. This made for greater use of the retreat center, connecting with the gym and giving us a traditional quadrangle feeling. Suddenly, we feel near self-contained, something that should be more complete by August when the dance studio opens near the ACC, also providing the girls a changing area. Parking will be added near the expanded bleachers, opened in time for graduation, which provided 414 more seats. Things seem to be shifting and adjusting in our own form of continental drift, realigning itself and fitting anew. With the gift of $2 million towards new science buildings, we hope to achieve another improvement and movement. The times are still a changing. The greatest change remains the blending of two student bodies into one; the new format of a co-ed school from previously separate ones. Attitudes and expectations have moved with this realignment; similar and equal expectations make for a one school view, shared in common as brothers and sisters in one family. We have tried to keep differences that help preserve identity; we have also emphasized our commonality, as we see ourselves as one now. Much of the credit for this goes to the students, particularly the senior class of 2013, who have shown leadership and a willingness to work with faculty and administration for the best school environment. With their care and effort, we move forward towards next year, ready for new challenges and opportunities. They see themselves as one community, split only by grade levels, interests, and activities, able to work together, as they did on two service days, and willing to support others. When one hears the CBSL project presentations, they know that co-operation and care can make all the difference in how we live together. We are a living, learning, and growing school; a place of discovery being explored daily, a second home for many. Our future remains one of speculation, of hope and dreams. For this our Faith Journey is vital, our self-direction requires an ability to steer; without the rudder that faith provides, we would bob about, cork-like, pushed along by wind and current. With Faith and Commitment we can do great things, serve more students and their families, bring about greater growth individually and as a community, be an even stronger school. With such goals in mind, we are open to the myriad forms of help and support that lead to improvements. With appreciation for the many generous donors of effort, care, and gifts, we have a summer to prepare for a strong start that will launch us forward into next year.

ver the course of the year, with the guidance of John Dybczak, AIA, chair of the Buildings and Grounds Committee of the Cardinal Newman Board of Directors, the members of the Science Department held several meetings. Some of the meetings included visits to other schools where new science classrooms and laboratories had been recently constructed. Evolving from these discussions and field trips are these images reflecting how these new science facilities might appear and where they will be placed on campus. It is our hope to finalize the plans and secure Diocesan and county approvals during the course of the coming year. We will keep an eye toward beginning construction during the summer of 2014, in celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of Cardinal Newman. Stay tuned!

uring the 2012-2013 academic year we witnessed many examples of Cardinal Newman’s Academic Excellence. Since the year marked the fiftieth anniversary of the opening of Vatican II, Mr. Rutherford and I suggested that the Newman Oxford Scholars review seven of the council’s sixteen documents in conjunction with the many writings of our patron. The objective of their research was to offer through the academic tools of essay and oral presentation, supported with evidence, whether Blessed John Henry Cardinal Newman would have agreed with the proclamations of Vatican II. When you have a few moments, please take the opportunity to review their work that appears beneath the Academics tab on our Website. Each scholar’s essay is linked to his or her name. University of San Francisco Professor Tom Cavanaugh, PhD, the moderator for the dinner discussion in April, observed, “…it is great to meet the students, very encouraging; some really fine observations on their part that give one lots to think about.” The students’ comments on the importance of the laity, the significance of ecumenism, and the concept of conscience as informed by both natural and revealed religion were indeed thought provoking. In reflecting on the students examples of Academic Excellence it is impressive to see how it flows both to and from their examples of Altruistic Spirit. The writings of our patron and the documents emanating from Vatican II all speak to our Catholic identity as people of service to others. As all students continue their work in support of the community, which can be measured in over 10,000 hours of service provided, we continue to reinforce the importance of reaching out to those in need.

As one also educated in Catholic schools from first grade through university studies I am pleased to see many of our graduates of the class of 2013 accepted by institutions celebrating the same Altruistic Spirit such as Santa Clara, Gonzaga, St. Mary’s in Moraga, University of Portland, Boston College, Georgetown, University of San Diego, Loyola in Chicago, LMU, and Notre Dame, among many Catholic and Christian colleges and universities. The Academic Excellence and Altruistic Spirits of Cardinal Newman graduates are telling, indeed.

Also during the year we observed the Artistic Expression of Cardinal Newman students in campus venues modified as black box theatres, concert halls, and art galleries. We even learned that our own Morris Acevedo was featured in a new release, The Great Jazz Guitarists: The Ultimate Guide (ISBN 978-1-61713-023-6). A quick visit to the Arts tab on the Website provides a glimpse.

Athletic Achievement similarly shined brightly, but maybe the brightest when the basketball team, under the guidance of CIF Coach of the Year, Tom Bonfigli, competed to the final buzzer in the State of California Division IV Championship game in Sacramento. The Academic Excellence of the seniors on the team (3.5766 Average GPA) was reinforced by their Catholic identity and Altruistic Spirit when they explained to the Catholic Professional Business Breakfast Club of Santa Rosa that their pre-game prayers to Our Lady of Perpetual Help held sway.

Newman Oxford Scholars

O

n April 23rd this year’s Newman Oxford Scholars met in the ACC for dinner with their families followed by a discussion moderated by USF Prof. Thomas Cavanaugh, PhD. In recognition of the fiftieth anniversary of the commencement of Vatican II the scholars researched seven of the sixteen documents emanating from the council. Their objective was to determine how our patron, Blessed John Henry Cardinal Newman would have reacted. Each of their essays is posted on the Cardinal Newman website beneath Academics. Based on their research, the Newman Oxford Scholars concluded that much of the work of Vatican II would have met with the approval of our patron. In fact, we learned that Cardinal Newman, following Vatican I in the late 1800’s predicted that a new council would be called within 100 years by an older Pontiff intent on completing the unfinished work of the first Vatican Council. Not surprisingly, many of Cardinal Newman’s writings on the importance of ecumenism, the significance of the laity, and the beauty of both natural and revealed religion greatly influenced Vatican II. Congratulations to this year’s Newman Oxford Scholars!

SPRING SPORTS 2013

Swimming & Diving T

he 2013 Cardinal Newman Swimming and Diving Teams both had solid seasons with good senior leadership. The boys finished third with a league record of 6-2, and the girls finished fourth with a league record of 5-3. The boys’ team was laden with senior talent led by last year’s league champion in the 100 Free, Giancarlo Tarantino. Other swimmers who helped with the team’s success were seniors Andy Robertson, Nick Bailey, Gradin Garvin, Ian Kennedy, and Matt Phelps. Junior diver, Ryan Johnson, and freshmen swimmers Jack Stafford and Devin Farber also made stellar contributions. The girls’ team was led by four-year varsity swimmers Taylor Young, Julia Personeni, Morgan Edgar, and Maggie Leinen. The girls’ 400 Freestyle Relay comprised of Taylor Young, Morgan Edgar, Shelby Raasch, and Julia Personeni broke a 16-year-old school record at the sectional meet. Julia Personeni and Morgan Edgar are to be applauded for setting three school records as members of three relays in their high school careers.

C

al-bound Taylor Young finishes her season as the most decorated swimmer in school history. The 2013 winner of the Press Democrat All-Empire Large-School Girl Athlete of the Year award, made All-American times in both the 200 Individual Medley, and the 100 Breast. Taylor broke her own records in both of those events this year and then set new individual marks in the 100 Free, and 100 Back, breaking 30-year-old records set by Olympic Gold Medalist Jenna Johnson. Congratulations to Taylor who leaves Cardinal Newman holding eight out of a total of Taylor Young "Most Decorated" Swimmer eleven swimming records at Cardinal Newman! in School History

Varsity Golf T

he Men’s Varsity Golf team was a young team this year. The top six included two freshmen, one sophomore and two juniors. The team held 2nd place in the NBL for most of the season, before losing a match on the last day of the season to finish third, up one place from last year! The team won two tournaments this year with the most important being the NBL Championship Tournament at Rooster Run GC, where they defeated all the NBL teams, and qualified for NCS. A 5th place team finish at NCS (5 shots out of 3rd) solidified their end of the season peak form. Freshman Scott Mitchell shot a brilliant 73 at NCS, which enabled him to compete at the NCS TOC, where a fine 72 was just one shot out of qualifying for Nor Cals. Joining Scott on the all-NBL team was Kevin Parry and Brandon Bone, whose best tournament rounds were 75 and 72 respectively. Bone's 72 earned him medalist honors at the Windsor Tournament. The rest of the team included freshman Seth Doolittle (81), Juniors Sylas Montgomery (84) and Nick Justice (85),

and Sophomore Will Kelly (87). In addition, the team won a pennant for the highest team GPA in the section with a 3.86 average GPA. The future looks bright for Coach Vuke's squad!

his year’s JV golf team had a very fun year. The team had many close matches and became a very tightly-knit group led by Jordan Zavala and Will Kelly with freshman Matt Bertacco, Walker Granzotto, and latecomer varsity basketball player Connor Rubattino. They played many great golf courses like Stonetree, Maira Island, Sharp Park and Chardonnay. Thanks to Windsor Golf Course for allowing us to use their facilities as our home course, they also allowed us to host our JV golf tournament which was a great success. Thanks to team mom Michelle Skaff for helping us with all the players, and thanks to Mr. Bertacco for being the tournament starter. A special thanks to all the parents for the driving and tournament help. Finally, thanks to all the players for their patience, understanding and positive attitude. I hope to see some of the players help the varsity next year!

Tennis T

he 2013 Tennis Team ended the season as NBL Champions with a league record of 13-1 and overall record of 19-4. We had great leadership with nine seniors and great wins from Dylan Tasker, Tim McCullough, Greg Gschwend, Nate Bentham and Max Leinen. Our final match vs. Casa Grande was clinched when Tim McCullough and Matt Payne won their singles matches in three tight sets. Many of our players earned All-League honors and post-season competition. Tim McCullough and Dylan Tasker were NBL Doubles Champions for the second straight year. Dylan and Greg Gschwend were our representatives for NCS Doubles Competition, and won the NCS Doubles Division II Tournament. As a team, we competed in NCS and lost a close first-round match vs. University High School 4-3. We got wins from Dylan Tasker at #1 singles, Nate Bentham and Max Leinen at #1 doubles, and Josh Gluch and Tom Broffman at #3 doubles. The Cardinal Newman tennis team looks to great leadership from Matt Payne and Jeff Destruel next year as we work hard to defend our league title.

Varsity Softball T

he Varsity Softball Team concluded their 2013 campaign with a winning record of 11-10. While our league record wasn’t as stellar, we managed big wins over Rancho Cotate, Casa Grande, Montgomery (twice) and Ukiah. As a result of our Div IV record, we will be headed for the play-offs. The future is bright for the Lady Cardinals as we fielded a very young team consisting of five freshman and sophomore starters. The under-classmen anchored key positions on defense and maintained some of the best batting averages on the team, while our three graduating Seniors; Vanessa Hall, Giulia Geary and Elli Filice provided the necessary leadership. Coach Briggs and his staff are proud of the student athlete’s accomplishments on and off the field.

V Softball was graced by three returning players; Marissa Garzini, Sydney Laron and Avery Roux. The trio was key to helping integrate the 10 new members of the team. Four of the JV squad had never played softball previously, and two of those were foreign exchange students who had never seen a softball game! It took a tremendous amount of courage to come out to the diamond, learn a new sport, and compete with others who had years of experience. JV was lucky to have Lucy Lin from China and Lisa Schoettmer from Germany. Our two other rookies are athletes coming to softball from other sports; Golfer Alex Gutierrez and Volleyball player Hannah Robles brought their talents to the diamond as well. First year JV players Megan Dybczak, Michaela Hountis, Amanda Kolman, Michelle Patin and Cassie Selstrom each came to the team with a handful of years’ experience and rounded out the squad well. Michelle and Michaela split the pitching duties. Megan and Amanda anchored the outfield while Cassie played on the left side of the infield. On the field, leadership was provided by graduating senior Kyndall Dutton. In addition to playing second base, Kyndall made sure her teammates were focused during warm-ups and practice sessions. The players on JV softball jelled well, looked out for each other and had a great time preparing for the next level. Coaches Kimberly Walton, Corie Watcher and Allan Jaffe were very proud and pleased with their teams’ efforts and accomplishments and are looking forward to next season.

Varsity Baseball T

he 2013 Varsity baseball season was a true analogy of the game of baseball. Baseball is a game of failure and how you handle failure from game to game or pitch to pitch reveals the determination of players and ultimately the team. This team had to endure many forms of adversity and rise above challenges throughout the season. Many times the ball bounces your way and things fall into place. This was not one of those years. But the players came together, fought through the adversity and finished well with pride. The Cardinals finished 3rd in the NBL with a 9-5 record, 15-13 overall. This could have been one of the toughest schedules a team has faced. Quality wins against Sunnyslope (AZ-ranked 64th in nation) early and big wins down the stretch against Maria Carrillo, Casa Grande (62nd in nation – 2 losses all year), and Alameda (first round NCS) were some of the highlights of the season. Many players received post season awards. All-League First Team: Eric Owenson (Senior, .419), Alex Roeser (Sophomore, .382), Mitch Wilhelmsen (Senior, .286), George Foster (Senior, .333), Ridge Etchell (Senior, .371, 1.04 ERA), and James Proctor (5-2, 1.09 ERA). Honorable Mention: Ricky Clark (Senior, .333), Austin Calos (Senior, .435), and Zac Faber (0.50 ERA, 1 ER in 14 innings relief ). The team earned an NCS Scholar team banner for highest GPA.

The 2013 team graduates 14 seniors. They all provided the team with leadership and commitment that will be missed. The 2014 team should have learned a lot from the great examples of seniors that are moving on. The future of the program looks great as the legacy of the seniors will live on and the returners welcome the new members of the Varsity team. Thank you to all the seniors and their parents who helped make this a special season I will remember. Coach McMahon

The JV team’s top hitters were Kyle Scott .393, Logan Onstott .375, Hank Miller .333, Michael Clark .315, and Austin Browning .313. As a team, each player made an impact to the Cardinal Newman baseball program. The JV coaching staff is very proud of the way each player performed on and off the field. This was an excellent group of student athletes that will have continued success as they progress with their education and baseball future at Cardinal Newman.

he 2013 season was a season of challenges and growth. The team competed against top level programs both local and abroad. Despite an 11-12 record, the team continued to improve finishing on a high note with a three-game win streak. The team was led by a consistent and deep pitching staff that kept the team in games. Colin Imm was a standout performer at the plate hitting .406, with 5 doubles, 7 triples, and 3 HRs. With hard work and dedication this group will continue to improve and contribute to the Cardinal Newman baseball program.

he CN Women’s Varsity Lacrosse team had another successful season! Nearly 30 players turned out this year – half of which were new to the sport. After two scrimmage wins against Sonoma Academy and San Marin, the team went on to achieve a 6-4 regular season conference record. Late-season critical wins against Justin-Siena and Tamalpais secured the team a spot in the MCAL Tournament, where it lost to Redwood, 12-19. Following MCAL post-season play, the team went on to the Division II NCS playoffs and finished the season with a 9-17 loss against a talented Campolindo program. The girls played with tremendous heart and intensity throughout the season, learning from early-season losses and applying those lessons to secure later-season victories. In addition to this, three of our players were named to the all-MCAL team (Marigrace Scrivanich – 1st Team Attack, Lizzie Stogner – 2nd Team Midfield, and Jordan Foster – 2nd Team Defense). We’re looking forward to another successful season in 2014.

he CN Men’s Varsity Lacrosse team had a very competitive and exciting year. Season highlights included 2 wins against local rival Sonoma Academy, a spring break trip to Sacramento where we picked up a win against D1 Bella Vista, playing 6 of the top 10 programs in the NCS, finishing the regular season 4th overall in conference with a record of 8-3, and defeating Lick-Wilmerding in the first round of the Division II NCS playoffs 8-2. Varsity ended the season 11-11 losing in the playoffs to a very talented Acalanes program. We won games graciously, and even in defeat the boys displayed exceptional strength of character and good sportsmanship. his year’s JV lacrosse team truly lived up to the team motto of “PrideHonor- Commitment” in their selfless spirit of competition both on and off the field. It was an exceptional season for the team with a 12-1 record. Guided by the coaching staff of John O’Neill and Sam Olsen, the team accomplished this record by focusing on the fundamentals of lacrosse but more importantly the players fused together in the true spirit of team sports. What epitomized their entire season was the victory over Marin Catholic. Being down by two goals in the fourth quarter with only 3 minutes of play left in the game, they reached down and pulled together like a “band of brothers” obtaining a victory over a tough and worthy opponent. It is with great pride that the coaching staff finishes the season with the knowledge that this team will bring vast amounts of talent to the next level and beyond.

2013 Graduates in celebration at the Baccalaureate Mass

The graduating class of 2013 has experienced many changes in the last four years. The greatest of these changes took place when Ursuline High School closed two years ago, and when Cardinal Newman High School opened its doors to the Ursuline girls. This class is now experiencing another big change in their lives: they are graduating high school and going off to college. Father Raúl spoke about the changes that will occur in life during the Baccalaureate Mass at St. Joseph Parish in Cotati. Simply put, “Change is inevitable, growth is a choice.” The class of 2013 has shown much growth in the last four years because they did not allow the challenging changes in life to stop them from, what speaker/writer Matthew Kelly says, “Becoming the best version of yourself!” This is how we answer God’s universal call to holiness, by becoming the best version of ourselves and humbly being what God wants us to be: SAINTS! May God Bless the Class of 2013, Now, and Forever! — 28 — 28

"Close to Home"

P

lease accept my sincere thanks to the many who have expressed through email, social media, and text messaging kind words of appreciation. An important point to emphasize is that my next step includes my continued participation in the marvelous Cardinal Newman community through the Angela Merici and John Henry Newman Foundation, Inc. There are many projects on the horizon to further improve our learning environment and to preserve Catholic secondary education in the greater Santa Rosa area. This region is home to Sheila and me. We are taking steps to secure property nearer to the Cardinal Newman campus to construct our retirement home recently sketched by our architect son. During Friday’s meeting of the board of directors Graham Rutherford, my dear colleague and friend in implementing the President/Principal model of administration for Cardinal Newman recalled our discussions in 2004 of the Jim Collins title Good to Great. Having observed during transitions that new leaders can appear critical of predecessors it was important to us to celebrate the many successes of Cardinal Newman’s faculty and staff during the school’s first forty years before moving in new directions.

President Mike Truesdell addressing the graduating class Mike pictured at a "Fun in the Fall" Event

Based on what the dedicated Cardinal Newman community has achieved during the last decade it is appropriate to change the title of the book from simply Good to Great to Amazing to Truly Outstanding. St. Paul in his letter to the Corinthians states, “But all things should be done decently and in order.” The joy I experience in collaborating with all stakeholders of Cardinal Newman is their eagerness to listen to St. Paul to make certain things are done decently and in order. Whether it is in engaging third party auditors to help the school demonstrate excellent financial stewardship, or supporting such academic initiatives as the Newman Oxford Scholars program to celebrate academic excellence within the context of our Catholic faith, everyone involved steps up to do things decently and in order. In addition, it is clear in discussions with students, faculty, staff, parents, alumni, and benefactors that St. Paul’s observation that “Love is patient and kind, it does not insist on its own way” creates the environment where the young people entrusted by their parents to the care of Cardinal Newman find themselves. I look forward to continuing my involvement with the Cardinal Newman family in supporting the initiatives being pursued by the Angela Merici and John Henry Newman Foundation, Inc.

Mike Truesdell, President

hanks to all the Parents, Administrators, Faculty, Staff and students who did such a wonderful job representing our great school on Holy Thursday when we followed Jesus' example and served our broader community with a special emphasis on the poor and disenfranchised. Annually, our community does a tremendous amount of work and students spend many hours in a great variety of service experiences.

The sites we served this year include Cardinal Newman High School, Kids Street, St. Rose Church, ReStore: Sonoma County Habitat for Humanity, NAMI, Redwood Empire Food Bank, Charles M. Schulz Museum and Research Center, Redwood Gospel Mission Manna, Redwood Gospel Mission Thrift Store, Head Start and Early Head Start at Community Action Partnership of Sonoma County, Family Support Center, Riverfront Regional Park, Cultivating Impact, Laguna de Santa Rosa Foundation, Friends House, Abraham Lincoln Elementary School and additional sites visited by our Seniors for their Community Based Service Learning (CBSL) Projects. Enjoy just a few of the 98 photos taken by our traveling photographer, Mr. Dirk Bietau.

2013 CBSL/Senior Awards

T

he Blessed John Henry Cardinal Newman says, “God has created me to do Him some definite service.” St. Angela Merici says, “We have a greater need to serve than to be served”. The class of 2013 did just that and done it very well. This year our seniors served globally and locally. Our students served in Guatemala, Nicaragua, the Philippines, China, Vietnam, Domincan Republic, Belize and Africa. This year’s seniors served locally in a variety of ways. New partnerships were formed and established partnerships strengthened. Our new neighbor, Roseland Collegiate Prep, enjoyed classes designed and taught by seniors in the areas of art, Mandarin, theatrical arts, dance, science and swimming. Continuing to look at the areas of education and enrichment, there were many seniors who taught and tutored in our local schools and after school programs. Seniors addressed the areas of art, music, math, physical education, team sports, health, reading, writing and filmmaking. Following the Catholic Social teaching directive of Care for God’s Creation, the environment and animals were an area of focus for a number of seniors. There were many unique projects reaching out to many diverse groups in our community. Projects addressed the social issues of service to the poor, the elderly, those with special needs, the homeless, women, children, teens, and other unique groups in need.

awards Outstanding Recognition

Among the notable project work this year, the CBSL Committee honored the students who went above and beyond in their project. Allyson Ahlstrom ~ “Threads for Teens” Allyson created a non-profit to benefit teenage girls in need. Teens are able to come to the boutique and select two brand new outfits. Allyson will soon embark on her nationwide tour that will outfit more than 1000 teenage girls.

Matt Phelps ~ “Medicinal Music” Matt Phelps organized a concert series for senior living communities with fellow members from Napa Valley Youth Symphony. Matt also visited the Veterans Home and played music “door-to-door” to comfort and relax veterans.

Marc Chicoine ~ “Breaking Reality” Marc has taught dance twice a week for two years at Kid Street. He used the monies he made from DJ’ing at CN’s Jog-A-Thon to purchase a sound system for Kid Street Theatre.

Finally the CBSL Committee recognized outstanding partner groups:

Kyle Evans ~ “Social Advocates for Youth – Community Garden” Kyle was instrumental in all aspects of the ongoing development in the downtown community garden which benefits local homeless shelters. He also helped his classmate Andrew Yu find a location for his mural. Marissa Greenband ~ “Don’t Be the 1 in 3” Raising awareness about the dangers of Driving Under the Influence, Marissa put on a school-wide assembly, an education night for parents and presented in classes. Most recently, she has organized shoe donations for an exhibit of those lost to driving under the influence. Sarah Matossian ~ “Dance Through Life” Teaching dance through CalServes at Wright Elementary, Sarah truly became part of the community she served. She taught weekly lessons and organized a joint dance show with CN dance class and her students.

• Altruistic Spirit •

Natalie Ramirez and Arianna Johnson ~ “Hands are not for Hitting” Natalie and Arianna worked to raise awareness about the issue of domestic violence. Working with the YMCA, they created class presentations, held fundraisers and drives that ultimately supported domestic violence survivors. Audrey Romano, Heidi Booth, Maureen Flanagan, Freddie Garcia, Dylan Hamilton-Smith ~ “Seeds of Learning: Nicaragua” The students served through a nonprofit, Seeds of Learning, to better education in the Americas. These students contributed through fundraising and a service trip to implement sustainable projects to help communities in Nicaragua and El Salvador to break out of the cycle of poverty. Jenny Wittry and Elli Filice ~ “Bowls of Hope” Enhancing the art program at Steele Lane Elementary, the girls went twice a week and taught ceramics to every student. The year culminated in an art show where the students proudly displayed their work.

The Cardinal Newman Dance Program presented "Moments of Impact"

O

n May 1st and 2nd in the Jackson Theater at Sonoma Country Day School, Director and Choreographer Gabrielle Thompson, alongside a talented group of students, presented an evening full of inspiring performances based on moments that left lasting impressions. Dancers rocked the stage with their enthusiasm and passion dancing to great classics such as "Love" by Nat King Cole and “Chorus Line”, along with current music from Cold Play and Black Eyed Peas. Surprises including a captivating blacklight piece, live music and singing and student choreography entertained the exuberant audience. A magnificent dance solo of self-expression by Dalton Bertolone was overwhelmingly received. Operatic vocals professionally sung by Sarah Sims was a delight to the entire audience along with the talented lyrics, voice and music of Sarah DeFors and fine vocals of Kaela Wall. All 75 dancers performed with impeccable timing and unity including seniors Talia Baugnon, Marcia Carino, Kara Chandler, Caitlyn Rei, Shelby Deffterios, Sarah Matossian and Sarah Wiggins. A special thank you to the parent volunteers such as Leesa Deffterios, Natalie Piazza, Denise Fossi and Sylvia Duffy who created a successful raffle and concessions. All of the parents are immensely supportive and it could not have been done without their ongoing involvement. Another year of successful dance performances will be remembered by students and audience alike.

Day on the Green 2013!

A

n annual tradition, Day on the Green, started out on a gorgeous Friday, celebrating the last day of classes for the academic year! The ASB leadership class organized fun events, booths and music to thank the students for a stellar year! Class Councils and various other clubs sold pizza, cotton candy, drinks, root beer floats, milkshakes, snow cones and crepes! After eating some treats, students enjoyed the Dunk Tank, 3 vs. 3 basketball tournaments, a huge slip and slide, obstacle course, volleyball, jousting and music run by the music department! Students remained long after the 1:45 dismissal to lounge on the grass and bask in the sun. Shortly thereafter, the new ASB members helped the graduating class to set up for our first- ever Country Music BBQ and Concert held in the gym. The CN Dads’ Club funded the BBQ and generous alumni donated their time BBQing delicious burgers and dogs while students took their turn at the mechanical bull. Local country talents McKenna Faith and Chad Bushnell kicked off the evening. All in all, it was a perfect end to a great year! See you in the Fall!

23 Annual Alumni Golf Tournament A SUCCESS! rd

N

early one hundred golfers arrived at the Oakmont Golf Club on Thursday, May 30, 2013, for the 23rd Annual Alumni Golf Tournament. It was a perfect day for golf and golfers were able to enjoy a full 18 holes! Once golfers were registered and collected their raffle tickets, mulligans, and tee prizes, they enjoyed lunch before heading out to the course. As soon as the carts hit the course, golfers discovered that they would be “Golfing Around the World”, finding holes representing different countries such as Germany, Italy, China, Mexico, France, Ireland, Cuba, and the United States. Each hole had food and/or drink to offer the golfers, making for a very festive event. On Hole #9, Passport Photos were taken by Dirk Bietau (www.dirk.com) as golfers enjoyed a layover by relaxing with cigars donated by CigarBQ. Golfers also had the chance to win a car thanks to Silveira Buick GMC for making the hole-in-one car available! Following 18 holes of golf, participants met back at the Quail Inn for a fabulous buffet dinner and drinks. Golfers and guests enjoyed the evening as they shared stories and viewed the auction items, raffle prizes and tournament trophy with names of past winners engraved. Special thanks to Mr. Dennis Crandall for serving as our auctioneer this year. The final paddle raise during the live auction will help to fund the Alumni Endowment Scholarship Fund. We also want to thank some of our community auction donors: our Tee-Prize Sponsor and auction donor, Ken Molinaro ’72 – Leisure Points; auction donor, Allan & Kimberly Henderson; auction donor, Justin Richardson ‘98; and Eagle Distributing. Your generous support is greatly appreciated! Thank you! Don’t miss out on next year’s golf tournament!

Rex Rafanelli

Aidan Basinger

Rex Rafanelli, along with 15 other students from St. Mary’s College, visited and taught in a small school in a village in Cambodia. The group was able to raise enough money to supply this village and surrounding villages (12 in all) with wells bringing the villagers access to fresh water. This photo is the first glimpse of the individual impacts that each of the wells have on the lives of the villagers.

Aidan Basinger '00 married Jessica Hill of San Luis Obispo, May 11, 2013, at El Presidio Chapel, Santa Barbara, CA. Blake Rector '00 best man, Kevin O'Brien '00, and Megan Basinger '96 were among his attendants. Aidan is a project engineer/manager for Cushman Construction in Santa Barbara. Danny Zabatta Class of 1990

Danny Zabatta experienced a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity when he was reenlisted at New York Yankees' Monument Park on April 18, 2013. Chief Machinist's Mate (SS) Daniel Zabatta, accompanied by his family and friends participated in the reenlistment ceremony. Zabatta knows a little bit about baseball. In 1993, he played at Yankee Stadium for the Junior College New York area All Stars where he sustained an impressive .500 batting average. Cmdr. Ken Curtin, deputy director of training, Naval Submarine School served as Zabatta's reenlistment officer. Curtin previously served as executive officer aboard USS Dallas and reflected on Zabatta's reenlistment. "It is an honor and privilege to reenlist Chief Zabatta, particularly at a place that holds so many memories for him and his family," said Curtin. "Having served alongside Zabatta aboard USS Dallas I can speak directly to his character and integrity and the honor he has for serving his country in the U.S. Navy." Dallas is a nuclear-powered fast-attack submarine of the Los Angelesclass built by Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics Corporation. Cardinal Newman is proud of all the sacrifices he and the armed forces have made for our country.

gift of education lasts a lifetime. A gift of an educational endowment last forever. There is no better way to memorialize a loved one or honor a life well lived. Beyond supporting the education and formation of tomorrow’s leaders, there are decided tax advantages to making a planned gift. Income and tax deductions are the best known rewards. But you can also: •Enjoy the satisfaction of completing a larger gift than you thought possible during your lifetime •Increase your income •Avoid taxes on appreciated stock or real estate •Have no management worries •Provide for your spouse •Save on estate taxes •Save on probate costs •Turn you home into tax savings without having to move •Still provide a generous inheritance for your heirs Recognition is given for all gifts received by the school. Below are the different Recognition Societies that welcome your support: The Merici-Newman Society - $100,000 and above …our best Society - $50,000 - $99,999

The Heritage Society - $25,000 - $49,999

The Patron Gift Society - $15,000 - $24,999

The Benefactor Gift Society - $5,000 - $14,999 The Gold Circle Society - $1,500 - $4,999 * The Cardinal Gift Society - $500 - $1,499 The Friendship Gift Society - $1 - $499

*Donors giving at $1,500 or above annually are enrolled in the President’s Cabinet and invited to an annual celebration. There are several ways you can enjoy the rewards the law gives to the generous. Here are just a few ways to support your charitable objectives. Visit our website under Giving Tab for more options.

The Newman Fund The Newman Fund was established in 2004 to encourage and recognize the loyalty and support of alumni, parents and friends. The Newman Fund gifts, which are primarily unrestricted (meaning the donor allows CNHS to determine how the money is used), relieve the burden on tuition and assist with the school’s daily needs. Our annual studentdesigned Christmas Card sent to our community each year offers an annual opportunity to support Cardinal Newman through the Newman Fund.

FUSE

Faith Unity Spirit Excellence

Faith – rooted in the Catholic faith Unity – unified in a shared responsibility Spirit – inspired by the spirit of community Excellence – committed to excellence in all endeavors

Realizing the value of a Cardinal Newman High School education and the needs well beyond basic tuition, parents share in the investment of excellence in education. We ask each new family to attend a FUSE presentation during the start of their first year at Cardinal Newman to learn of the program’s history and the goals for the coming year. We are fortunate to have received FUSE pledges from many of our school families, offering unrestricted funding to the operating budget.

PEACE

Planned Estates Aiding Catholic Education Donors who have supported Cardinal Newman High School during their lifetimes are encouraged to continue their generosity in perpetuity. A simple bequest to CN will assure that tomorrow’s students benefit from a life’s work.
