La Petite Fashionista Mag Issue #2

Page 1

it's Sweater Weather!

Letter from the Editor I can hardly believe I’m writing for the editor’s letter to the second issue of La Petite Fashionista magazine! I’m so grateful for the outpouring of support from new and old readers of my blog! I am so excited for Thanksgiving and the Holidays right around the corner- it truly is my favorite time of the year. The second issue of the magazine has so much to check out, from hosting a farm to table dinner, to a feature on a Lilly Pulitzer print designer, to cooking up cold weather soups & finding fashionable and affordable winter coats. This is the time of year to get a little crafty, whether you’re making your own christmas gifts (we have some awesome diy ideas), or mixing up a holiday cocktail. It’s great to hear how many girls like the LPF editors, try to add an extra dose of style into their daily lives! Have a happy holiday, and keep in touch with us at @LPFMag. We love hear from our readers! Enjoy Issue #2!

Farm to Table

a menu of fresh local ingredients from farm to fork- a night of good food & good conversation. 12.

e Dinner Party

13.

14..

We wanted to host a dinner with a menu inspired by fresh produce and local flavors. We chose recipes that were simple but elegant, and reflective of the fall harvest from onions to apples to cranberries. All of the fresh produce, cheese, and wine came from local farms, co-ops, and wineries supporting local businesses and getting the freshest ingredients possible. The tables were decorated with found objects and simple burlap wrapped napkins. Simple kraft paper tags make perfect placecards when tied onto napkins with lace. The table was covered with bittersweet, gourds, and shed antlers with a campfire burning in the background. This could easily be adapted to any time of year with table decoration and whatever produce is fresh for the season!

Q+ A with Emma Hamilton of

Your Friends LPF: How did you form the band? Emma: It was really serendipitous. We all met and within a week were playing music together. Even our name came through a funny conversation we had! LPF: Who are your biggest musical influences? Emma: First local shows

The Decemberists, Aid Kit, and all our friends who we play with

LPF: How would you describe your personal style? Emma: I’d describe my personal style as a sort of folk-inspired and autumnal, although I do wear a lot of black, and can’t live without my combat boots. LPF: What’s your favorite outfit to wear to shows? Emma: Shows = fun dresses! It’s important to feel confident when you’re playing a show. Flirty floral dresses totally do that for me. When it comes to the holidays, I think a festive drink or two is always necessary. This cranberry fizz cocktails is a major crowdpleaser, and is as easy as can be! Simply throw your vodka, lime juice, and cranberry juice into a martini shaker with ice and shake until icy cold. Pour into your glass of choice and add your champagne & garnishes.

Simple, right? Photography + Editing by: LAURA PODLICH

Extra tips from Laura:

* For a fun vibe, go to your local thrift store and buy a mix of different cocktail glasses- let your guests choose their favorite for the night. * If cranberries aren’t your thing, switch them out with blueberries or raspberries! * Love this cocktail enough to enjoy it all year long? Buy a few bags of fresh cranberries while they’re still in season and throw them in the freezer, thawing them out before you make your next batch! *Under 21? Swap champagne for sparkling juice!

WHAT’S IN OUR

Winter Beauty Bag Most people have a love/hate relationship with the cold months. If you tend to mostly lean towards hate then why not brighten up this year and add some amazing products to your makeup bag. Then you can still curse the cold but look fabulous while doing it. With the cold months coming you want to not only wear the right colors but you also want to protect your skin. The products below will assist you with both. I tend to shop mostly at Sephora so all the products below are from there. Enjoy!

Lips Clinique Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Colour Balm: Not only does this lop color add a hint of color (there are a bunch of color options) it also adds moisture. That’s such a plus because in the winter we all always get a case of chapped lips every now and then. And a major plus is that this pencil never needs sharpening! Just twist and swivel it up. Bite beauty Honey Lip Lacquer: I absolutely love this lacquer. Not only does it moisturize your lips but it also has contains Resveratrol which contains anti-aging benefits that smooth lines and wrinkles.

Eyes Laura Mericer Artist’s Palette for Eyes: Time to change up the colors that your eyes are wearing! This amazing palette not only offers those sultry, dark colors but also has light shimmer options as well. And who doesn’t love wearing colors with names such as African Violet, Guava, Plum Smoke and Deep Night. Too Faced The Return of Sexy Eye Shadow Palette: I’ve always been a fan of Too Faced makeup and they’ve outdone themselves yet again. They have all the perfect colors for the cool months ahead but they also have included cards that help you with step-by-step application. Can looking beautiful become any easier?! 42.

Written BY: Heather Wendrow

Face Naked Skin Weightless Ultra Definition Liquid Makeup: I had mentioned this amazing makeup on my blog about a month ago and I probably will never use anything else. Every word in its name is 100% true. Your skin become flawless when you put this on and it feels like you’re wearing nothing. And not only are you covering any blemishes but you’re adding nourishing ingredients that will protect, hydrate and brighten your skin.

Mascara Benefit They’re real! Mascara: The name alone makes me love this mascara! But it truly does curl, volumize, lift and actually separate the lashes for that perfect look. And with the design of the brush, you’ll get curl even with the tiniest of lashes.

DIY Nail ART

Sweater weather is here! It’s officially time to bust out those boots, throw on a leopard scarf and sip on a Pumpkin Spice Latte (while browsing the latest issue of LPF Mag, of course). But before you start going crazy pinning all kinds of pumpkin recipes, make sure your mani is as ready for the cool weather as you are.

STEP 1: Apply a Ridge-Smoothing Base Coat. This matte base smoothes out ridges sometimes caused by chewing or picking at nails, and gives the polish a smooth finish.

STEP 2: Apply Two Coats of Base Color. Now the fun begins! Select your base color (you’ll want it to be a little darker) and apply two coats to the nails.

Essie Fill The Gap! Ridge Smoothing Base Coat, $10,

Essie “Case Study”, $8,

STEP 3: Apply Top Coat. After the first color, apply a top coat to prevent chipping, and to help your nails dry a little faster before applying the other colors. Seche Vite Dry-Fast Top Coat, $9

44.

STEP 4: Apply two fine lines of a lighter shade with a Marbling + Dotting Tool. Using a fine brush or precision tool (we used Sephora’s Marbling + Dotting Nail Tool), draw two fine lines vertically along the nail, in a lighter shade. Sephora Collection Marbling + Dotting Nail Tool, $10, Line: Essie “Jazz,” $8,

STEP 5: Apply two fine lines of a darker shade with a Marbling + Dotting Tool. With a fine brush or precision tool, draw two lines in a darker shade, horizontally across the previous two lines. Sephora Collection Marbling + Dotting Tool, $10 Line: Essie “Bordeaux,” $8,

Tips for hosting your own beer tasting…. 1. Do your research. There are great resources online like this pairing chart from craftbeer.com. It let’s you know what types of food pair nicely with what style of beer. It’s also important that the beers are served with the lightest body, like a pale ale, first and the heavy body beers, like a stout, last.

2. Choose craft brews that are available commercially. I used all craft beers that can be found at most liquor stores. They are ideal because they are made truer to style than your typical commercial beer that is altered to appeal to a wider range of taste. 3. Be fully stocked. Be sure to get an accurate count of people attending so you can ensure you have enough of each style for every guest to have a 4 ounce pour. 4.

Get the basics. Water and pretzels may not fit into your pairing menu but both are great for cleansing the pallet after each course. The last thing you want is guests’ having the lingering taste of the last beer served when they move on to the next.

5. Take notes. Never underestimate the power of a cute notebook and a pencil. People may be resistant to take notes at first, but being able to write down which style you like or don’t makes all the difference. By the end of the night you’ll forget which you favored and will be kicking yourself for not writing it down. 6. Challenge yourself. Explore the taste of each a little deeper. Taste with your eyes closed and try to recognize the subtle flavors that make each beer unique. Get over your preconceived notions of each style and drink outside the box. Not a big fan of full bodied, bitter stouts? Try a sweet, or milk, stout. It’s not as heavy tasting and has a sweeter after taste, especially when paired with a chocolaty sweet treat!

Real Girl's Homes: Kelly''s Eclectic Chic Waterfront Condo

52.

Kelly Boudreau is a marketing maven by

day & blogger/diy extrordinaire by night. Her blog, Hello Boudreau documents her latest interior design finds and reinvented thrift store treaures. She gave us a peek inside her Florida condo to see how she’s given her place an update with affordable decor and personal, DIY touches. “I would describe my home design style as unapologetically eclectic with a side of chic. But what exactly is chic? I’d have to agree with Webster’s dictionary definition as “cleverly stylish; smart; the woman who is chic adapts fashion to her own personality.” She shops for interior decor everwhere from indoor flea markets to thrift stores and credits the friends she’s made in vendor suppliers, collectors, and warehouses for helping her find unique pieces. She also sells the vintage decor through her blog. Her decorating style is a collection of things she loves - purchased by instinct not based on a showroom setup. “The interiors that are chic and exciting to me are those with a vibrant, confident collection of pieces that don’t necessarily go together, but work well together because their owner loves them,” says Boudreau. Kelly lives with one of her best friends like many recent post-grads. Her advice for living and decorating with roommates is communication. “Don’t make any major purchases without a roommate’s input”. Her roommate Amys’s style is more girly and coordinated while Kelly’s is more eclectic but they’ve been able to compromise to create a stylish & harmonious living space.

THE LPF GUIDE TO SAVING MONEY WHILE

Seville, Spain

Paris, France

Traveling is something that everyone should do at some point in their lives, now or somewhere down the world. The world is a massive oyster of opportunity; beautiful scenery, exquisite architecture and amazing people. Here are LPF’s tips for making sure you make the best of your new adventure in an affordable way…

1. Save beforehand: Money is a major issue when it comes to studying and traveling

abroad. People often remember to save up for the flights and the accommodation, but sometimes, people forget that we have to actually survive in another country for nearly a year.

2. Eat like a local: During your time abroad, you may want to eat out all of the time.

However, this is not cost effective. Perhaps eat out for special occasions like you would do at home, find a restaurant with specials and of course, chip in with friends to create a home cooked meal.

3. Communicate on the cheap: If you’re in one place for a extended period of time.

it’s smart to invest in a local phone/sim card. However, there are other forms of communication for free or next to nothing.

72.

Photography + Writing by: Faye Smith

Skype is a free service that you can use wifi to make calls and you can always use the local internet café to communicate with family and friends via twitter, facebook, or perhaps a blog.

4. Walk it out: It may be difficult to walk when traveling long distances. However, it is completely realistic in an urban setting. You are bound to discover more of the city you are living in by traveling by foot, it’s free, and you’ll be getting a workout. Even now, after nearly a month of living in Spain, I am finding completely new restaurants, vintage shops and theatres by just wandering the streets!

5. Free and Cheap: Just because you’re on a budget doesn’t mean you can’t have

fun. Look into free festivals in the local paper, go to the beach, or create a huge meal from local produce. Traveling in Europe is even easier on the cheap. Take a bus from one part of the country to another for as cheap as 10 euros. If you’re lucky enough to get study or travel abroad it’s important to remember not everyone gets this opportunity. If you’re studying, it will become so much more than a line on a resume and a student loan. It’s essential to embrace every moment, take every opportunity, create unforgettable memories, and have the time of your life!

WOMEN IN BUSINESS: Caroline Boyk,

Assistant Print Designer at Lilly Pulitzer

LPF MAG: What did you study in school? Where did you go to school? CB: I studied illustration at Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota, FL. Illustration was an amazing fit for me, it let me to do what I love (draw) and taught me to make an awesome career out of it. LPF MAG: When did you realize that you wanted to be an artist? CB: My mom is an artist, and my aunt (who is essentially a second mother) is also an artist. My mom would keep me busy with art projects; painting, drawing, sculpting, ect. It just stuck with me from there. It was never really a job or a chore to me, so it just seemed natural to pursue something I’m passionate about! LPF MAG: Who do you find most inspirational? CB: I can’t just pick one, I have about a million inspirations! My co-artists on the print team are some of the most extraordinarily talented people I’ve ever met. Other than the people I work with directly, I am constantly looking to other artists for inspiration. Britt Browne has some awesome designs that I am always mesmerized by. Johanna Burai has some hilarious animal prints (I have a weakness for animal prints). I also adore vintage Lilly prints, they’re so bright and quirky, you can find the strangest motifs that are guaranteed to make you giggle! LPF MAG: Where do you find inspiration for your art & prints?

CB: I’m always inspired by nature and animals; specifically big cats and foxes! It’s really awesome, our department will sometimes take an inspiration trip somewhere fun. There’s a botanical garden not far from the studio, once we even went to Miami (it was so cool). Trips like these, where I can step outside the studio, are incredibly helpful. It lets me see and experience things I might not normally, which helps me come up with new ideas! I love seeing new plants and animals that aren’t native to my home, it helps remind me there’s more out there and keeps the creativity flowing!

LPF MAG: How would you describe your personal style? CB: My personal style? Hmm…I’m a comfort dresser and I obviously wear a ton of Lilly! I love throwing on flats, jeans, a printed Lilly top, and Lilly’s Leighton colored blazer. I also have a weakness for Lilly shirts and my gold Resort Chic wedges (but really, who doesn’t?). LPF MAG: What is your favorite thing to design/draw? CB: Animals, without a question. I think, if I wasn’t an artist I would definitely be working in a zoo as an animal behaviorist or something crazy. There’s just something about animals that fascinates me, and I can’t help but incorporate that into my work! LPF MAG: What’s your favorite thing about working at Lilly Pulitzer? CB: Everything!!! I genuinely think I have the best job in the world. The people here are some of the nicest, funniest people you will ever meet. I do love that I get to travel. The print team loves to “Lillyfy” our stores which requires a lot of painting on walls, gluing, and framing! It’s so fun, and it’s so nice to see all of the retail stores and meet customers from all over! I also get to travel to stores and live-paint at their events. I love the energy in the stores during events, and being able to see customers trying on, buying, and talking about things I have designed. It’s always an amazing feeling. Not to mention, I get to make art for an amazing brand, it literally could not get better! LPF MAG: What’s your favorite Lilly print? CB: My all time favorite? AH! There are so many good ones…but I think Peel and Eat is my favorite. Since I was a kid I’ve always had a soft spot for flamingos, and the colors are just so beautiful. I always get compliments when I wear my Wyatt dress in this print. LPF MAG: What are your future goals? CB: Right now, I want to soak up everything Lilly has to offer! I’m always searching to learn and improve my artwork and there is so much to learn here, it’s really exciting. However, I am always searching for new creative paths. I love glass etching and making illustrations from cut paper. Someday, I’d love to learn jewelry making and make my own accessories. Is that the long way of saying I think the world is my oyster? YOGA For Beginners As the autumn leaves fall and you break out the hoodies and scarves, you may be less inclined to continue your workout outdoors. If you’re looking for a different, warmer option, consider heading indoors to a yoga class. Yoga can not only tone your body and refresh your mind, but it can also improve your immune system and lower your stress level. Many gyms offer yoga on their class schedule or there is most likely a yoga studio near you. If you’re skeptical of the headstands and Oms, here’s what you need to know:

Find your level If you’re new to yoga, stick with a beginner’s class to start off. Most studios offer different levels at different paces or they may offer an “All Levels” class, which suits most because the instructor will offer different variations of poses in order to accommodate all students. If you’re unsure of which yoga style may be the best fit, here’s a breakdown of four of the more well-known ones: Hatha. This style is an easy-to-learn basic form of yoga that is actually the foundation of all Yoga styles. Hatha is slow-paced, gentle, and focused on breathing and meditation. It’s best for beginners and people wanting to learn the basics of yoga. Iyengar Yoga. This style promotes strength, flexibility, endurance and balance through coordinated breathing and poses. In Iyengar, you slowly move into a pose, hold it for a minute and then rest for a few breaths before stretching into another. Due to its slow pace and attention to detail, Iyengar yoga can be especially good if you’re recovering from an injury. Vinyasa: Vinyasa Yoga focuses on the coordination of breath and movement. It is a very physically active form of yoga; it helps improve strength and flexibility, tones the abdominal muscles and can potentially reduce the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes. Vinyasa is good for beginners as well as advanced yogis that want to strengthen their bodies. 74.

Ashtanga (or Astanga) Yoga: This style involves synchronizing breathing with progressive and continuous series of postures. Ashtanga can improve circulation, flexibility and stamina; it’s known to be a more challenging yoga practice and is not usually for beginners.

Find your flow Become familiar with the class you’re taking before you walk in by visiting their website or Facebook page if they have one. Read over their suggested attire as well as if they lend out mats or not. Maybe even give them a call to see how crowded the class usually is and see if they have a special offer for first-time students. Most yoga studios and instructors are very understanding and willing to answer any and all questions.

Find your style Most classes will suggest wearing comfortable, flexible clothing. If you’re on a budget and can’t afford some of the more well-known, trendy yoga gear, Target and Walmart both have very suitable and affordable options. Just make sure you’re ready to sweat in whatever you wear! As far as mat choice goes, do your research before you go pick one up for class. If a studio provides mats to borrow, they’re usually well-sanitized and handy to use. This way you can test out what kind is best for you before you buy. You may also glance around class and see what kinds of mats other people use. Don’t be afraid to ask your fellow yogis about their mats! Most people are willing to offer advice and share why they chose their particular mat; it’s an important process to find the one that works best for you. If you’ve never considered doing yoga, consider stepping out of your comfort zone this season. A warm, heat-inducing yoga class can be extremely relaxing and enjoyable on a chilly fall day. Grab a friend and get on the mat - you never know what you might learn! Written by:: Hayley wood

LPF Travels // Readers share their cities

Charleston, SC 7.

When I first walked onto the College of Charleston campus, I knew it was a perfect fit. Romantic, Spanish moss draped over the century-old oaks, charming pastel buildings that existed pre-Civil War, budding new restaurants and independent shops, a drivable distance from the beach. I wasn’t just a college student for 4 years, I was a proud Charleston resident as well. I love to brag about my city, and it’s easy to do. It’s an impeccable historically-preserved city, so every street and corner can take you to a different era - or country. Here are some of my favorite haunts and recommendations of things to do (i.e: how to avoid the typical tourist traps):

EAT

(While Charleston is becoming a food mecca and is home to some top-notch, bank breaking restaurants, here are some equally delicious and affordable eateries.) Fast and French - Tucked away on the beautiful Broad Street, this family-style seating French eatery is the real deal, serving Croque monsieurs and other standards at a great price. Butcher and Bee - Their gourmet menu changes daily according to their local farmer’s basket. I love that they are open on the weekends till 3am, it’s the freshest, most flavorful midnight snack you will ever have. AutoBanh Food Truck - If you can catch it around the city, it is a MUST. Their Banh Mi vietnamese sandwiches are the best I’ve ever had. Think crispy chicken with Sriracha honey and picked okra. Virginia’s on King - Here is where you can get Charleston favorites like Shrimp and Grits and fried green tomatoes - and in the mornings, bottomless mimosas. Wildflour Pastry - It was literally my neighbor this year and is the friendliest, most decadent pastry and coffee shop. Try everything there, especially their savory scones and raspberry Nutella turnovers. Sticky bun Sundays are a must.

DRINK

Black Tap Coffee - Not in the best part of town, but still worth the hike for their cold brew coffee and pure, whitewalled atmosphere. Kudu - An old study joint of mine that hosts open mic nights, latte art competitions and live music in their courtyard. The Gin Joint - A pre-prohibition themed bar that creates unique concoctions served by men in vests and handlebar mustaches. The Belmont - The classiest bar you will ever go to, with a tin ceiling and a black and white movie projecting on the wall. Ask for a Tiger Paw - a frothy, whisky - amaretto sour. Perfection in a tumbler. College of Charleston

the Belmont

SHOP

(Despite the rise of chain stores, there are still some local gems.) Worthwhile - Think of it as Anthropology’s gothic sister, who even has creative window displays. Selling vintage jewelry, hand-stitched clothing and off-beat accents for the home. Indigo - Adorable, happy gift shop right by the Waterfront park. Lily - If Marie Antoinette opened a stationery and gift shop, this would be it. Full of pastel-hued luxurious goods.

DO

Walk along the Battery at sunset, it never EVER disappoints (unless it’s raining) Watch the sunrise at Folly Beach and go to the Lost Dog Cafe afterwards Rent bikes and ride around the city - especially Lower King and North of Broad Walk into the cistern on the College of Charleston campus. I highly encourage travel to Charleston, it’s a perfect vacation for history buffs, sun worshippers, foodies, and all in between. I’ve never met a traveler who wasn’t smitten by the city.

Guide to Personal Finance it’s all about the benjamins! If there is one thing that all young people need to understand when it comes to budgeting it is SELF CONTROL. Think about budgeting as if it was a diet for your bank account, except you want to save instead of lose! Even if you can afford that $250 Lilly dress, do you really “need” it/ need it right now? Think about that number in terms of the amount of groceries it could buy or even as an entire year’s gym membership! The dress isn’t looking so great now, is it? Just like that bag of Cheetos doesn’t look so tasty when you realize how many calories are in it… Again, just like dieting, there is nothing wrong with a little treat here and there! For example, splurging on a great pair of fall riding boots makes sense since you will get a lot of use out of them. Be smart about your splurges and, above all, practice self control. Keep a Record of where your money goes. Keep receipts and/or a journal of where your money is spent. I personally don’t like carrying cash, so I can easily do this with my online bank statement. Once each pay period, look at how much money was put in to your account and how much you spent. What percent of the money spent was on necessities, like bills, rent, or groceries? Calculate it out by each of these categories. Now look at your “play” money. Are you spending more than you thought at the craft store? Is happy hour really eating up your income? You need to know where your money goes!

82.

This tip has lasted the test of time because it is one of the best—Pay Yourself First. If your company offers a 401K match program, you are crazy to not utilize it! Think of it this way, by putting that $100 (or whatever it is) into your future, your company is going to give you

an extra $100 to do the same! So, at the end of the day, you are getting paid to save.

Our favorite finance apps: 1. Mint 2.Suze Orman 3. CompareIt 4. Shoeboxed 5. Pageonce

A 401K shouldn’t be your only way to pay yourself. Always put part of your paycheck into your savings account. Even if you don’t think you have anything to save for, you do. Maybe a future vacation, the expenses of a move, graduate school, or even unexpected bills! The other great thing about a savings account is that it can often be harder to steal from. There is no need to have $5,000 sitting in your checking account at any point—move the money that is not need right now into your savings! What if you lost your debit card and someone drained your checking account. Awful! But I am sure you would be MUCH happier if only $750 was lost instead of that $5,000!

If you can’t pay for something right now, don’t buy it! Period. This is the golden rule of credit cards! When that bill comes in, you are going to need to pay it off. The new Mac Book you’ve been wanting for a while is going to be much more enjoyable when it is all paid off and not nagging you for months and months via your credit card bill. The little things can add up to just as much as the big things. Sure, you practiced self control and didn’t buy the overly priced but oh so cute handbag you’ve been eying and we’re proud of you for it. BUT, don’t think that luxury items are the only way to overspend. Little items (especially food) can be one of the easiest ways to overspend. Spending $2 on fancy water every day at work is an absolute waste. If you work 20 days in a month, you are spending $40 on water. Refill your own bottle and put the $40 to much better use. Think it is too much of a hassle to have your own bottle? Buy a 24 pack of water from your local grocery store for about $3 –still a huge savings. It is important that you pay attention to the way the little things add up! Lastly, be realistic. Your budget is going to vary from month to month, paycheck to paycheck. Maybe you have lots of birthday presents to buy this month, or gas prices increase and you’ve already planned that weekend roadtrip—life happens! What is important is creating that average that helps you live well within your means—don’t make any drastic changes unless you absolutely must. Written by: Meredith Cotton

a page from the

a newbie’s guide to football We are right in the midst of football season, and you know what that means. Every Sunday afternoon your man and his friends are glued to the television with nothing but their beers and a bunch of junk food in hand. The question is where do us women fit into this picture? Now I know what some of you may be thinking… I want to kickback, chill with the boys and watch some football but I have no idea what in the world is going on. Don’t know the difference between pass interference and a false start, a fair catch and a field goal? Fret no more ladies I’m here to give you a little lesson in football 101. Break out your cute PINK NFL apparel with your favorite team logos on it and be in the dark no longer. This football terminology will leave your guy and his friends a bit impressed. You may not understand the entire game, or what each and every call means, but here at La Petite Fashionista we’ll leave you with just enough information to hang with the boys. Our resident sports expert, Jacqueline to teach us a few things about the game of football. 86.

Written by: Jacqueline Yanchocik

Here’s the rundown.. LINE OF SCRIMMAGE:An invisible line that goes from where the football is placed at the end of a play. This is where you see the dudes line up against each other. Neither offense nor defense can cross the line until the ball is put into play. DOWN: The action in the game that starts when the ball is put into play and ends when the ball is ruled dead. This means the play is over. The offense gets four downs to advance the ball ten yards. (AND THAT’S ANOTHER FIRST DOWN!) DRIVE: The point in the game when the offense has the ball until they score by a touchdown or a punt and the other team gets possession of the ball. END ZONE: The area at the either end of the field, place where a TOUCHDOWN is scored. TOUCHDOWN: When a player scores in the end zone, worth six points, the ball must cross the opponent’s goal line. EXTRA POINT: A kick that is worth one point, this happens typically after every touchdown. FALSE START: When the lineman on either side makes a quick, abrupt movement before the snap of the ball. FIELD GOAL: A kick, worth three points through the goal posts. INCOMPLETION: When a forward pass falls to the ground because no receiver could catch it, or it was dropped. INTERCEPTION: When a defensive player on the other team catches a pass. FUMBLE: When a player losses the ball while running or when they are tackled. Players of the offense or defensive may recover the ball once it is loose. PASS INTERFERENCE: A call made by the ref when they see a defensive player make contact with the intended receiver before they catch the ball. RED ZONE: This is the unofficial area from the 20-yard line to the other team’s goal line. This is usually where a lot of the intense action happens; your man may be on the edge of his seat. You may not be the next NFL expert, but hopefully these terms will help you to understand and enjoy the game a little more!
