FALL guide

beauty

your guide to looking gorgeous this autumn! I like to keep my makeup relatively simple, and when I do, I find myself reaching for the same products day after day. My fall make-up routine is perfect for every day, and can easily be transformed from day to night with a few extra steps. I’ve searched low and high for the best drug store products, and rounded up some of my faves to share a simple, yet gorgeous look for fall. 1. First, I start with Maybelline’s Dream Pure BB Cream. This BB cream blends so flawlessly, and it has 2% Salicylic acid, so it helps fight blemishes while concealing them at the same time. It also has a matte finish that will keep your face from getting shiny all day long. This cream isn’t lying when it says it’s an 8-in-1.

2. Next, I use Maybelline’s Instant Age Rewind Eraser Dark Circle Treatment Concealer underneath my eyes. I draw this in the shape of a large V about equal to the tip of my nose, and fill it in all the way up to my eye. It really works well to draw the eye down to the newfound brightness of your check, and alas! Your under eye area magically appears dark circle free. I also use this on any areas with redness, such as around my nose or on any blemishes. 3. To finish off my face, I like to use a few powders. For all over face power (with incredible coverage!), I use Almay’s Nearly Naked Pressed Powder. This powder is lightweight, yet seals in your concealer and BB cream and creates a flawless looking complexion.

y

4. For blush, I always reach for my NYX Powder Blush in the color Summer Peach. Don’t let the name scare you, this is thee most wonderful blush for everyday. It’s practically an exact dupe of the infamous Nars Orgasm blush (and it’s only $6) Seriously, put down the magazine, and go get yourself one right now. 5. In order to keep your summer glow going for a bit longer, add a little bronzer. I am obsessed with the NYC Smooth Skin Bronzing Face Color in the color Sunny (720). It’s matte, and it gives you the most perfect sheer, yet still noticeable bronze glow, need I say more? Oh yeah, it’s only $3. 6. Now for eyes, I like to start off with filling in my eyebrows. I use the CoverGirl Eye & Brow Makers in the color Soft Brown. Choose a color that is lighter than your natural brows to avoid having too intense brows. 7. Next is eyeshadow. If you don’t have a NYX Dream Catcher Palette yet, add that to your list too. I got mine in the color Dusk Til Dawn. It comes with ten beautifully pigmented eye shadows in different shades of browns with some accent colors too. It retails at $15 and it’s truly worth every penny. First use the light pink color in your inner corner and under your brows. Then, use the bronze color to cover your lid. Next, I like to smudge any of the browns on the bottom row to smoke out my eye a little. At night, the black is perfect for adding extra dimension. 8. Finally, top it off with some mascara. I am forever bonded to my CoverGirl Great Lash Volume Mascara in Black. There is nothing better. To darken it up for night, use a swipe of Maybelline Line Stiletto liquid eyeliner to draw a cat eye. 9. Last but not least, lips. When I’m looking for something a little more than chapstick, I like to use my CoverGirl’s Lip Perfection Jumbo Gloss Balm in Rose Twist. It’s the perfect natural-but-better color. For something a little deeper, I’m obsessed with CoverGirl’s Lip Perfection Lip Color Lipstick in Seduce. It’s the perfect bright cranberry color that you can dab on to look like a subtle lip stain, or swipe it on like normal for a bold look.

Patricia Maristch is an inpspiration to La Petite Fashionista girls everywhere She started Piqued PR at age 23. She’s talking to us about the excitement and challenges of being a young entrepreneur and the story of how her career started with a tweet! LPF Mag: Tell us about your job and daily responsibilities: I am the owner of Piqued Public Relations, a boutique public relations firm that focuses on the lifestyle industry. LPF Mag: What was your first job out of college and how did you land that position?

Piqued PR just a year ago at age 23?

Patricia: Piqued PR came to be pretty organically actually. I always knew I wanted to be an About a month into that I received a full time entrepreneur, I just didn’t know it would happen position at a local advertising agency as a PR co- so early. You see, during my time at my agency ordinator . I obtained this position through Twit- position I kept my freelance politician client and ter actually! I simply made my profile read that I just continued to grow my freelance client list. was a local grad and looking for a job in the PR Eventually I was simply just able to transition industry. I then followed literally every agency and publicist in the state. The head publicist at these clients (and a few others) into Piqued PR the agency came across my account, tweeted me clients! My grandfather and father both own back and I emailed her my resume. The rest is businesses and my mother has experience helping those businesses to grow, so they all sort of history. helped guide me. I think the most important step is just filing for an LLC or sole proprietorship. LPF Mag: Tell us how you went about starting

Women Who Inspire Us | Katie Niemiec

LPF Mag: What realistic tips do you give to anyone interested in building their own company? Patricia: My biggest tip would be not to quit your job before you’re ready. I made sure I had an income stream I could at least comfortably live off before I quit my day job. I also had a good bit of money saved in bank accounts, strong client list and industry contacts. Lastly, I would say don’t overthink it. While it’s important to prepare and plan I also think the longer you wait and think about things then the longer it will ake you to actually pull the trigger. You’ll never truly be 100% ready. Part of being an entrepreneur is rolling with the punches and figuring it out as you go along. Some days are really bad and you’re like “what am I doing and why?” and then other days you couldn’t be happier. It’s just part of it. LPF Mag: What’s behind the name “Piqued PR”? Patricia: Picking a name was actually really important to me and something I thought long and hard about. Personally I hate when people name businesses after themselves. I think it puts too much focus on the person and not their offerings. I love P words (Patricia, pink, pretty, etc.) and just started writing words and looking up meanings. My biggest advice in picking a name for anything is think about what you want to do and then pick up a thesaurus to see different ways to say that. Piqued stuck because my job is really to pique editor’s and consumer’s interest in my clients and their services or products. LPF Mag: What did you learn from your previous work experience that has helped you with running your own business?

Patricia: The biggest lesson I learned from working at an agency was branding, creating a culture with your clients and for your employees that people want to be part of and can easily recognize what it stands for. Working with politicians has taught me to have a thick skin. It’s a cutthroat industry, even worse than fashion!

offer traditional PR and social media services. Often times I go on buying trips, help with branding identity, connect them with other businesses, etc. They really value this.

LPF Mag: What do you find most challenging about your career?

Patricia: Thick skinned, sociable, hardworking and creative.

Patricia: My biggest challenge is being a young entrepreneur. Whenever I meet someone either a potential client, networking associate, industry peer, etc. the first thing they comment on is my age. I often hear, “I could be your mom” or “when I was your age I was a mess” the list goes on. It makes things really awkward and I’m constantly trying to think of new ways to revert the conversation into a better situation.

LPF Mag: What advice would you give to someone looking to get their foot in the door?

I’ve also had a lot of doubters say I’m too young and that’s why they don’t want to do business with me or that’s why I do something a certain way. I literally am ALWAYS proving myself probably twice as much as someone twice my age. It really frustrates me, as it would be completely inappropriate for me to say to them, “wow, you’re old” or “you could be my mom”. This is why I created Her Main Line so us young entrepreneurs (and aspiring ones) could network and support one another! LPF Mag: You’ve worked with some great fashion and beauty brands. How do you balance small and large clients as you are establishing your company? Patricia: I’ve come to realize what clients love most about working with Piqued PR is the fact that I really invest myself into each client no matter how small or large they are. I give clients my cellphone and text back and forth with them at all hours of the day or night. If they need something, have a question or just are excited about a new product then I’m always available. I also don’t just

LPF Mag: What characteristics would you say are essential to work in fashion PR?

Patricia: Network and intern! It’s a smaller world than you think. Knowing the right people certainly pays off and opens doors. Trust me I know it’s intimidating to attend networking events (especially as a student) but it’s essential. Internships gives you valuable real experience to add to your resume. LPF Mag:Where do you see Piqued PR in 5 years? Patricia: I just hope to continue to organically grow Piqued PR with new clients and employees.

CHILI CON CARNE

• 3 Tablespoons Vegetable Oil, Divided • 2 Pounds Well Trimmed Boneless Beef Chuck, Cut into 1⁄2 inch Cubes • 1 Medium Onion, Chopped • 1/2 Head Garlic, Peeled & Chopped 1/4 Cup Ground Ancho Chiles • 1 Tablespoon Ground Cumin 1/8 Teaspoon Ground Cinnamon 1/4 Teaspoon Ground Allspice • 1/8 Teaspoon Ground Cloves • 6 oz Dark Beer (I used a Brown Ale) • 14 oz Can Diced Tomatoes in Juice • 1 Teaspoon Dried Oregano • 1 Teaspoon Kosher Salt • 1 Tablespoon Tomato Paste • 1.5 Tablespoons Flour

1. Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a large pot over medium high heat. Add 1/2 of beef and sprinkle with salt. Cook until browned, stirring occasionally. Using a slotted spoon, transfer beef to a large bowl. Repeat with the other 1/2 of the beef chunks & remaining oil. 2. Reduce heat to medium. Add 1 tablespoon oil and onion. Sauté until soft, about 8-10 minutes. Add garlic and stir; about 2 minutes. 3. Add ground anchos, cumin, all spice, cinnamon, and cloves to the pot. Stir until fragrant, about 1 minute. 4. Add beer and stir 1 minute. Scrape up browned bits from bottom of pot. Return the beef and it’s juices to the pot. 5. Add diced tomatoes with juice, 1 cups water, oregano, and 1 tsp. kosher salt. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low, cover with lid slightly ajar & simmer gently until beef is just tender, about 2 hours. 6. Cool 1 hour then chill in refrigerator overnight. 7. If any fat has accumulated at the top of the chili, remove with a spoon. Bring chili to a simmer over medium heat. Stir in tomato paste and four. Simmer uncovered while stirring often until thickened and beef is very tender, about 30 minutes. Add water by the 1⁄4 cup full if too thick. 8. Garnish and serve.

pumpkins

It’s that time of the year where pumpkin is everywhere, drinks, food and décor. When people think about pumpkin decorating they go right to carving a pumpkin, the old fashion way where you cut triangle eyes and attempt to make a scary mouth. Let’s face it not all of us can carve a pumpkin without risking one of our fingers. Thanks to browsing pintrest like it’s my job I have a few new ways to decorate a pumpkin that you can even match to your style.

on the letters of your choice.

For a cassic pumpkin You can start by using a stencil and cutting to that. A new way you can carve a pumpkin is by making a design of your choice and using a drill. Such as this pumpkin. A downfall to getting real pumpkins and decorating them or carving them is how quickly they start to go bad. By using bleach mixed with water and letting them soak for a few hours you will be able to make them last longer.

The glam pumpkin is the ultimate pumpkin. You’ll use so much glitter it will make your house look like unicorns do exist. For this type of pumpkin you will need the following: paint, sequins, glitter and even a lace stocking. Your end result will look like either this or this. To achieve this look you will want to use glitter, glitter and more glitter. You can also use sequins and stickers to add even more sparkle.

For a more personal pumpkin you can add a monogram to it. Monograms are everywhere so why not put them on a pumpkin! It’s a good way to show off your new last name or make a special announcement. You will need the following: paint, paint brushes , stickers or a stencil if you wish. Your end result will look like this pumpkin. To achieve this type of look you will want to choose two different paint colors and paint the pumpkin in a base color, let it dry and free hand or use a stencil to add

For those of you that are more on the edgy side you want to give off the look that your glam with a little bit of rock. For this type of pumpkin you will need the following: paint, stickers and push pins. Your end result will look like this pumpkin. To achieve this type of look you will want to choose one main color, paint and let it dry. Add on stickers and push pins as you wish.

For a chevron pumpkin you will need tape and the paint color of your choice. Put the tape on the pumpkin with the thickness chevron of your choice and then pain and let dry. You can do a two toned chevron pattern or add glitter to give it some extra sparkle. There are so many new ways to decorate your pumpkins for fall than most people would think. Now your pumpkins can look a little extra glam this fall!

When we think of fall, two of the first things that come to mind are bright, orange pumpkins and spicy cinnamon. Besides tasting and smelling delicious, these flavors also boast many health benefits. Beer Review | Mallory Thompson & Lauren Felix

seasonal be samuel adams octoberfest The store worker insisted I try this one...and I was very let down. Although the label claims hints of caramel, and online tasters describe a toffee taste, I couldn’t taste any of that. I found this the blandest of any seasonal beer I’ve had and I wouldn’t order this out. (Now, if you’re not a huge fan of beer, this may be for you as it is a very mild taste!) Rating: 2/5 New Belgium Tour De Fall This is one of my new favorite beers! If you’re a fan of pale ales (think SweetWater 420 or Sierra Nevada Pale Ale), you’ll like this. You can definitely taste the hops but there are some really delicious fruity tones to this beer. A must-try! Rating: 5/5 Stella Artois Cidre This one isn’t actually a beer...but if you absolutely can’t stand beer (like many of my girlfriends) but want a seasonal beverage in a bottle, this is for you! It is the perfect cider, in my opinion – an excellent middle ground between dry and sweet and made with handpicked apples. It is a bit pricey but well worth it. Try the 4-pack from the grocery store for a non-committal buy! Rating: 4/5

eer review we take our work very seriously..

LAKEFRONT PUMPKIN LAGER This pumpkin beer is out of a brewery in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It was the perfect balance of seasonal pumpkin taste without the spiciness or sweetness that can make it taste like it’s trying to be a Pumpkin Spice Latte. It was a great seasonal, but easy drinking brew. I paired it with a soft pretzel and whole grain mustard in true Wisconsin style. Rating: 5/5 BLUE MOON CARAMEL APPLE spiced ale I had high hopes for this beer as I usually love everything Blue Moon makes. It came in a variety pack of seasonal beers (our favorite was the Horchata)! There was little caramel or apple taste, it wasn’t very flavorful -disappointing! Rating: 2/5 Leinenkugel oktoberfest Another Wisconsin brewery, Leinenkugel offers a wide variety of beer. The Oktoberfest is a fall favorite. It is an easy drinking fall beer, but not overly flavorful. There are light notes of pumpkin & spice but not as bold as most Oktoberfest beers. Definitely on the must try list, but not our favorite of the picks. We paired with a sliced up caramel apple for the perfect fall combo. Rating: 4/5

Soup Recipe | Brooke Kennedy

cozy comforft food :

creamy broccoli cauliflower soup

Blended soups are a great way to create something warm and comforting during the cooler seasons but also get a TON of nutrients! I was determined to create a meat and (almost) dairy-free soup that would still fulfill my cravings of broccoli cheese soup and potato soup, both of which typically call for heavy cream, bacon, sour cream, etc.

Creamy Broccoli Cauliflower Soup 1 quart chicken broth 1 onion, finely chopped 1/2 head cauliflower, chopped into small florets 1 brown russet potato 1/2 head broccoli, chopped into small florets Salt and pepper, to taste 1/4 cup all-purpose flour (I used wheat flour) 1/2 cup milk (I used plain almond milk) Shredded Cheddar cheese Chopped scallions 1 tablespoon chicken bouillon granules (optional) Directions: 1. Combine chicken broth, onion, cauliflower and broccoli. Bring to a boil and reduce heat to low. Continue to simmer until vegetables are tender. Add chicken bouillon, salt and pepper. I personally will reduce the amount of chicken bouillon the next time I make this soup. The chicken broth brought more than enough yummy chicken flavor. 2. While the vegetables are simmering, poke several holes with a fork into the potato and pop in the microwave. My microwave has a “Baked Potato” button but if your doesn’t, set the timer to 5 minutes, turn over, and then cook for another 5 minutes. Once fully cooked it should be very easy to peel off the skin (or leave them on for added fiber and other nutrients). Cut into bite-size pieces and add to the simmering vegetables. 3. In a bowl, combine flour and milk until smooth. Slowly stir into soup Add mixture to soup, stirring continuously as soup thickens. Transfer into a food processor in batches or pour into a blender (the entire batch fit into my Vitamix) and mix until smooth. Top with cheddar cheese and scallions. Enjoy! 4.This recipe made enough soup for two dinner-sized bowls and two lunch-sized bowls. Take the leftovers and pour into individual portable bowls or tupperware and pop into the freezer. I brought the frozen soup to work, left it in the refrigerator throughout the morning and microwaved it for 5 minutes at lunchtime.

Fantasy Football | Jackie Yanchocik

e h t s ’ t a h w h t i w l a e d big As if we don’t already know how much our guys are into the game of football, it seems they’ve all found a new love: Fantasy Football. Forget rooting for just one team. Fantasy has created an all new way for them to keep up with the game and their favorite players. Not to say that the ladies can’t play Fantasy Football too- for those of us who just don’t get it- we’ve got the lowdown. You may have noticed your man having a new obsession, constantly checking on scores, having more than one game on at a time — don’t worry, this is all par for the course. So let me give you a quick rundown on the “Oh so addicting” game of what is, Fantasy Football. Fantasy Football is a season-long game in which the player (a.k.a. our lovely men) compete against another group of players (their fellow bros) to pick their fantasy team each week. A draft is held at the beginning of the season where participants each choose members for their teams, starters and alternates, usually making up about 15-18 athletes. Each week the Fantasy Football team has the diligent task of selecting their players for that week, making up a team that includes:

•one quarterback •Two running backs •Two wide receivers •one tight end •one kicker •a defense & special teams

The players that are selected for that week essentially earn “fantasy points” based on their personal performances during that week’s game. The fantasy player that gains the most points at the end of the season wins the league. Some leagues are set up as “just for fun”, others include some big money in the pot. Whatever reason they’re “playing” for, whether it’s just the satisfaction of beating out other friends, or winning $500 at the end of it all. Fantasy has become something much more than just watching Sunday football. It enhances the way a game is being watched. I know connecting with your guy during a game may be extremely difficult, depending on how into football he is, but try to figure out who his players are and keep up with them during the weeks. Trust me, he’ll be impressed by the fact that you know different players, in different positions, for all these different teams. Guys can get very competitive, especially when they’re up against other guys for the win. So just try to bear through this fall season with the sport we all know dominates this time of the year. Now get out there, put on your favorite team’s jersey, and we’ll see you at the end of the season — one of your guy’s players is bound to make the Super Bowl. At least we can hope! All we know is that we’ll be bringing the buffalo chicken dipHappy football season!
