Closing of Red Cedar stirs up fierce protest

Haslett Library’s celebration

The final phase of the move from the old to the new Haslett Library took place Sept. 18, when volunteers assembled to create a “Chain of People” passing books between the two buildings. The event raised funds for the continuing operations of the library. Haslett school board member Lorie Barbieri (left) joined in the effort, which stretched down Franklin Street to the library’s new home. Haslett head librarian Ann Chapman got a surprise gift during the Sept. 19 formal dedication of the newly relocated library . Noted illustrator Gijsbert van Frankenhuyzen of Bath, whose mural from the old library was moved to the new children’s room, presented Chapman with a stack of books from his Hazel Ridge Farm series, gifts from himself and his wife, Robbyn. WHAT’S NEXT The East Lansing School Board is scheduled to make its final decision on the school configuration plan Sept. 26 at 6 p.m. in the auditorium of MacDonald Middle School, 1601 Burcham.

during a four-hour public hearing. Red Cedar — one of six elementary buildings in East Lansing — would be shuttered in the fall of 2016 under a recommendation presented by Superintendent Dr. David Chapin at the board’s Sept. 8 meeting. That recommendation was tentatively approved 4-3, and is scheduled to go to a final vote on Monday, Sept. 26. Chapin said the board has the prerogative to delay a final vote if members choose to make changes to the recommendation. A decision must be made by no later than early October to allow time for an application to the state for approval of a bond election in February 2012.

While administrators and school board members have consistently said the decision to close Red Cedar was strictly data-driven, opponents of the closing pointed to numerous reasons why it should remain open. Seventh-grader May Martineau, a Red Cedar graduate, received a standing ovation from the audience for her remarks. Her Red Cedar friendships included classmates from China, Africa and Argentina. “I know my experience is priceless,” Martineau said. “Not a lot of kindergartners can say they learned about another culture from their classmates. I could, and I can.” Chapin said the decision

was arrived at using student enrollment data, which he said “shows an enrollment that is moving north”, and census data comparing 2000 and 2010. According to the Census, while the city’s population has increased, but its school-aged population has declined, with the most severe drops occurring in the Red Cedar area. Others expressed concern that race and ethnicity figured into the decision to close the school. “Closing Red Cedar sends a message that children of color and international students are not a priority in East Lansing,” said Kari Nicewander, senior pastor of Edgewood United Church of Christ and the mother of an African-American son.

We are better than this.” While Chapin acknowledges the passion with which people view Red Cedar, he said the makeup of the student population did not factor into the decision. “In my mind it’s always been about … improving the school experience for all of our students. It’s never been about selecting neighborhoods and it’s never about divisions in our community. It’s always been about creating an improved school experience for all students,” he said. Still others just hope to preserve their neighborhood school. “You must realize this school is the jewel in the crown of East Lansing Public Schools,” Kathleen Boyle said. “Don’t smash that jewel, and don’t devastate our small, somewhat quirky neighborhood – a committed and important part of the East Lansing community.”

EAST LANSING – Agreeing to buy alcohol for someone not yet 21 proved to be trouble for a 26-year-old Bay City man. Just before midnight Sept. 10, an city police officer at the Quality Dairy at Michigan Avenue observed

a man exiting the store while carrying a case of Bud Light. According to the report, the man met with a second person and gave them the case of beer. The second person put the beer into a backpack. The officer subsequently stopped both men, and during his investigation discovered the man in posses-

sion of the beer was not of legal drinking age. A 20-year-old East Lansing resident received a ticket for minor in possession of alcohol. The Bay City man was cited for furnishing alcohol to a minor following a recent incident. Police log • A 21-year-old East Lansing resident was recently arrested for

MERIDIAN TWP. – A Lansing man was lucky Meridian Townhip police officers were at the Meijer store. Around midnight Aug. 28, Meridian Township officers were at the Okemos Meijer on a medical call when they were told of a man who had been inhaling from spray cans – commonly known as “huffing”

– while waiting in line to pay. Meridian Police Lt. Greg Frenger said the man, a Lansing resident, was found outside the store in a state of disorientation. The man was arraigned the following day on a charge of criminal use of a chemical agent, a misdemeanor which carries a maximum penalty of 93 days in jail. • At 5 a.m. Sept. 4, offi-

cers were called to the 5800 block of Lake Drive on a report of a fight. Officers found some minors at the location who were cited and released, but Frenger said there was no evidence of a fight and no cooperation. Two 19-year-old males, both Meridian Township residents, and a 19-year-old Lansing resident were all cited for minor in possession of alcohol.

trespassing following a party. Officers responded to the 300 block of Kensington just after midnight on Sept. 10, where they had been sent on a report of a loud party. When they arrived, the house in question contained 12 to 15 people, the windows were open and people were singing karaoke. East Lansing Lt. Jeff Murphy said the singing violated the city noise ordinance, as it could be heard from across the street. Police said the residents were described as cooperative and apologetic. However, one guest – whose blood-alcohol level was later measured at .12, greater than the legal limit for intoxication in Michigan – began arguing with officers. The man was later arrested ror trespassing and lodged until sober. • At 2:43 a.m. Sept. 7 near the intersection of Coleman and Wharton, an officer saw a gray Pontiac Grand Prix with its hazard lights on and a man standing outside the vehicle. The officer pulled into the parking lot to find out how he could help. While speaking to the man, the officer observed behavior which

Murphy said made him suspect either alcohol or drug intoxication. He also saw the man’s front passenger tire was completely shredded, to the point where part of the tire had fallen off the rim. A 21-year-old Troy man for operating under the influence of liquor or drugs. Blood test results were not immediately available, Murphy said. The man was lodged until sober, when he was released on payment of a $200 cash bond. • A man was arrested on felonious assault charges recently following a fight. At 2 a.m. Sept. 3, police received a report of about 20 people fighting in the road in the 200 block of Cedar, in the area of Cedar Village Apartments. Police did not find a fight, but they did find a 20-year-old female Michigan State University student who was injured. The woman had minor facial injuries from a punch, and was transported to Sparrow Hospital for treatment. A witness in the area did give a description of a vehicle, and a car matching the description was stopped a short time later in the

area of Grand River and Stoddard. Through an investigation at the traffic stop and witness identification, a 19-year-old Lansing male was identified as the suspect in the alleged assault.

• A 22-year-old Troy man may face further charges after pulling a knife at a party. At 9:15 p.m. Sept. 15, East Lansing police were called to a party at the corner of Abbot and Oakhill. Some of the party guests said a white male wearing a gray sweatshirt had threatened them with a knife. When officers arrived in the area, they located a man at the corner of Abbot and Elizabeth who appeared to match the description given. The man was returned to the party, where he was positively identified by those he had confronted. Upon arrest, officers found a knife, along with a quantity of cocaine and some unidentified non-prescription medication. Alcohol was not a factor, Murphy said. The investigation is continuing, pending authorization of charges through the Ingham County Prosecutor’s Office.

OKEMOS — “Stop tossing and start saving” is the mantra of the Meridian Recycling Committee this fall. A major recycling/reuse event will take place Saturday, Oct. 1 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Nancy Moore Park entrance, 2100 Gaylord Smith Court, off Okemos Road just north of Central Park Drive. “We are so happy to have found a vendor to take all colors of glass,” commented Barbara Reeves, recycling event coordinator. “It’s been a couple of years since we’ve been able to recycle green glass and people have not let us forget that they want to recycle it.” Again at this event, electronics will be collected by Vintage Tech

Okemos schools must seek new ways to improve I t was disappointing, but hardly surprising, to read about both racial disparities in local schools and school administrators’ sense that increased state funding for schools is not likely. Neither financially supporting public schools nor

a commitment to equality have been favored politically in recent years. As a result, these are extremely challenging times for our schools and communities. A continued loss of stu-

into a fantasy for many. Given the obstacles, are there things we can do to craft excellent education? As a parent of two Okemos students, volunteer and educator myself, I decided to run for the Okemos school board because I believe we can

think and act in new ways to continue to improve our schools if we work together as a community. Okemos will be pursuing a tax renewal for building and maintenance costs. That is certainly essential, but also insufficient. We must consider measures beyond millages, financial donations, and the now annual round of spring budget cuts. Restoration

I believe it is essential to develop regularized evaluations of practices so that we know we are doing the best we can for all our students. For example, the elementary school restructuring resulted in the closing of Wardcliff and Central, the two district schools with the highest percentage of children qualifying for free or reduced lunch. The altered K-8 programs increase school transitions. Research suggests that such transitions most adversely impact low-income and minority students. Could we analyze impacts the school restructuring has had on students and schools to document and, hopefully, proactively address any concerns? The same type of research driven approach could be used to analyze all of our practices as was done recently with the Kinawa curriculum. EAST LANSING — The City of East Lansing, Office for International Students and Scholars and the Community Volunteers for International Programs will host the Second Annual East Lansing Welcomes the World event on Sunday, Oct. 2. The free event, set to take place at the East Lansing Hannah Community Center from 3-5 p.m., will welcome international students to the community and celebrate 50 years of service by the program. For five decades, it has served to welcome thousands of MSU international students, scholars and their families to the community. The program offers a variety of educational and cross-cultural activities and programs that bring the international and American communities of Greater Lansing together. “According to fall 2010 statistics, 11.4 percent of the 47,131 students attending MSU were international students from 130 countries across the globe,” said event organizer Marie McKenna. “It is through the fine work of the Community Volunteers for International Programs that these international students find a warm, friendly and welcoming home in Greater Lansing.” The event will

It’s three hours of getting to play different characters,” Payne said. “It’s challenging, but it’s fun. It’s not like any show that’s ever been written. Theater-wise, I’m lucky to get three hours of play every night.” Payne grew up in Buffalo, N.Y. She attended Niagara University for college and spent summers at New York University studying dance. Both actresses said they’ve been able to draw on their own life experiences to enrich their respective characters. Frankie and Mary, for example, eventually go their separate ways. “I’ve had a roller-coaster ride

Some have been great, and some were not so great,” Tremel said. “I’ve definitely used the not-so-great ones when it comes to portraying the character.”

Touring and the life of an actor is “not a stable life,” she continued, and definitely takes its toll on relationships. “It’s a good thing this is a show with more mature actors. We’ve gone through our 20s, we’ve experienced a lot. We’ve made mistakes, gotten over that and learned from them. I’ve drawn on all those experiences to bring that into the character.” While Payne said playing someone she’s never been requires some suspension of disbelief, she does remember what it was like to be 16. She also sees the female characters as having different acting challenges than the men. “They go from young men to adults, and there’s a lot of tension between them. We haven’t had a transition like that at all, so we’re making two completely different journeys as an actor,” she added. “Thinking about how they moved in the 50s, vs. a hooker character in the 60s – the time period and who your character is makes such a difference.”

OKEMOS - Josh Rudd scored both goals to help Mason send Okemos to their third loss of the season with a 2-1 victory over the Chieftains on Sept. 17. Mason coach Nick Binder said that Okemos was one of their toughest tests to date . “Okemos is a good team, and if they get one more bounce, it’s a 2-2 game,” he said. But the Bulldogs got the first fortunate bounce in a game that looked like it was going to be a shootout early, as all three goals were scored in the first nine minutes of the contest.

Mason opened the scoring just 1:21 into the game when an Okemos pass in the back caromed off of the referee and fell to Rudd near the left-wing corner of the box. His right-footed shot found the back of the net to give his team a 1-0 lead. Okemos tied the game less than two minutes later from a free kick just outside the Mason box on the left-wing side. Josh Robison’s cross to the near post was headed home by Carson Covell to make the score 1-1 with 36:41 left in the first half. Mason took the lead right back, when Okemos goalkeeper

Landon Collier came off his line to slide and cut out a through ball to the onrushing Bobby Albert The ball again found Rudd, who rolled it into the open net from 25 yards out to make the score 2-1 with 31 minutes left in the half. While Mason continued to dominate possession for the bulk of the half, they created few scoring chances, and the half ended 2-1. “We got a little flat-footed and lost our composure a little bit in the first half,” Okemos coach Brian Guggemos said. “When you give up two goals in the first ten minutes, it makes it really difficult.”

The Chieftains took the game over immediately after the break, holding possession in the Mason end of the field for extended periods, and creating several dangerous chances on set pieces as a result. None of them found the net, however, and the Bulldogs kept Okemos in their own half most of the last ten minutes of the game to run out with the win. “Yeah, we probably had a bad break here or had something go against us there, but you’ve got to play over that,” Guggemos said. “They made some plays and we didn’t, but we played better in the second half, so that makes me happy.”

Okemos junior midfielder Josh Robison (9) sends the ball upfield, as teammate Scott Hughes (14) looks on, during the Chieftains’ 2-1 loss to Mason on Sept. 17. SCOTT YOSHONIS | LSJ MEDIA

Haslett brushes off heartbreaking defeats Kelsey Pence kpence@lsj.com

HASLETT — It’s all a matter of perspective for Haslett’s Adam Foren., the Vikings’ quarterback. Though the Vikings haven’t had much to cheer about with a 1-3 start this season, Foren believes there’s still time to turn the season around. “I think we just have to look back at those games and not get down on ourselves,” he said “In reality we are a couple of plays away from being 3-1, and we have to have that mentality going into each game. We feel like we’ve played some of the best competition in the area and hung right with them.” Aside from their loss to East Lansing in week one, the Vikings have made every game a battle.

The first tough break came against Okemos, after the Vikings rallied back from a 14-point deficit in the fourth quarter, only to fall to the Chieftains 27-29 in overtime. The Vikings grabbed their first win the following week with a 16-13 win over Owosso. Heartbreak struck again on Sept. 16 with a 27-17 loss to rival DeWitt. After taking a 17-13 lead in the fourth quarter, the Vikings had a chance to put it away after a DeWitt fumble. But the Panthers, ranked No. 3 , recovered the ball and scored three plays later. Haslett then fumbled its second kickoff of the night, allowing DeWitt to score again. “We’ve talked a lot about being more efficient and mentally tough,” Vikings coach Charlie Otlewski said Tuesday. “We have to be mentally tough when the

game is on the line. “In the Okemos game we jump offside, last week there were some missed blocks on kick returns that caused fumbles. It may be one guy or two guys not going hard and it costs us dearly in the fourth quarter. When it counts, we have make plays. We know our schedule is tough and there are no gimme’s this year.”

Intense practice The Vikings aren’t wasting time dwelling on the past. “This week (practice) has been very intense,” Foren said. “Coach is really upbeat and having us do competitive drills and it’s really boosting our confidence. We are getting our swagger back and that’s good.” Otlewski will be expecting big things from Foren along with other seniors

who can help out on both sides of the ball like Joe Varlesi and Kolby Casaday who both play running back and defensive back. Casaday entered Friday’s game against Ionia with three touchdowns on 47 carries for 373 yards. Varlesi has recorded three field goals with seven extra points. “I think one of things is Joe had 8 or 9 tackles and so he makes a lot of plays for us on both sides,” Otlewski said. “He’s our best athlete. “Foren has done a great job in our style of offense. We’ve been running a more traditional offense with less throwing. “He is a very capable quarterback and a great leader. Whether we’re running 55 times or throwing 55 times, he’s a team guy and is doing whatever it takes to win and that’s really outstanding.”

Haslett’s Joe Varlesi (22) watches the ball pop loose as he is hit by DeWitt’s Christopher Ruby (28) on a kick return Friday, Sept. 16, one of two disastrous breaks that have hurt the football team. AL GOLDIS\LSJ MEDIA

OKEMOS — Monday’s practice couldn’t come soon enough for senior quarterback Jonny Bolas. A little less than a week after Okemos (3-1) experienced its first loss of the season, falling to undefeated Grand Ledge 21-6, Bolas said his team has refocused and isn’t looking back. “We’ve had the two best practices we’ve had all season,” Bolas said Tuesday. “Everybody is going 100 percent and it’s been really amazing to see how our team has bounced back. I’m so proud of the team.” Knowing Grand Ledge would be one of the Chieftain’s tougher games, Bolas said he thought his team came out a little intimidated. What started out as a battle of the defenses, turned into back-to-back

touchdowns by both teams that eventually lead to 21 unanswered points by Grand Ledge. “It might have gotten to some people,” Bolas said on trying to remain undefeated. “A lot of guys were down afterwards, I could see it in their eyes. I just wanted to make sure they knew it’s not over. We have five more games and we have to work our butts off. It may be one step back but we are taking two steps forward.” Bolas’ is averaging 87 yards a game, 4.9 yards per carry and has five touchdowns on the season. Also aiding the Chieftains rush game are senior running backs Evan Leski and Ian Horne who had a combined five touchdowns for Okemos heading into Friday’s matchup against Sexton. “It’s one game,” Okemos coach Paul Palmer said

after the loss. “I told them they have two choices. They either can drop their heads or they can respond and continue throughout the season.” Bolas agreed. “I think we all made mistakes,” he said. “ I know I did. Individually I need to make better reads on the field and play at a higher level than I usually play. As a team, watching film we noticed we are all kind of doing our own thing.” Okemos will host Jackson this Friday followed by Holt on Oct. 7. The Chieftains finish their season on the road with Eastern and East Lansing. But the Chieftains aren’t looking too far ahead. Okemos coach Paul Palmer said it back at the beginning of season, and he’s continued to say it to his players each week. “One game at a time.” If the Chieftains con-

SPORTS BRIEFS Okemos swimmers remain undefeated The Okemos girl’s swim team remains undefeated at 2-0 heading into the third week of the season. The Chieftains have won the league title the past 10 years but won’t be the only contender this year in a talent-heavy Blue. Okemos will travel to Holland on Saturday for an invitational before hosting Grand Ledge last Tuesday.

Brycen Sorber (bottom) of Okemos dives into the nedzone for a touchdown with Grand Ledge defender Jordan Loredo draped on him back late in the second quarter of their game Friday September 16, 2011 in Grand Ledge. The touchdown put Okemos up 6-0. KEVIN W. FOWLER\LSJ MEDIA tinue to practice like they did last week, Bolas thinks the Chieftains will have a long playoff run. “I think the key to our success, especially after looking at these two prac-

tices, is our focus,” Bolas said. “ If we stick to our technique we can do really well. We do have the talent, we just need to stay focused and play to the best of our ability.”
