HOLT — The third annual business expo had many different kinds of local businesses under one roof. From Fat Boys Pizza to Craig’s Auto Body, businesses in and around the Holt and South Lansing area were on display in the Holt High School commons area on Oct. 26. “We’ve had a good mix of some people that have never heard of me and some that wanted to learn more,” Incu-Bake owner Marcy Bishop-Kates said. Her business at 2067 Aurelius Road had a recent open house, and is a large kitchen space for use by the community and other businesses. “I glad we were a part of this expo,” BishopKates said. “This is a great way to spread the word about what we do.” Attendees submitted their names for several door prizes from local merchants and the grand prize was a $500 Visa gift card. Many carried bags around and collected many free samples of products offered by the businesses. A high school band concert was featured that night as well. “We had this at the same time as a band con-

Fire chief addresses Kiwanis Club

At a recent Holt Kiwanis Club meeting, Delhi Fire Chief Richard Royston (left) spoke about the 2010 SAFER grant which was received from the Federal government. This four year Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response grant will provide a full time recruitment and retention officer for the fire department along with funding to pay for tuition, books, and participation in firefighter and emergency medical classes. At the conclusion of this grant period, Chief Royston hopes to see an increase of at least 15 volunteer fire personnel on the department roster. After his presentation, Chief Royston received a Certificate of Appreciation from Holt Kiwanin J. R. resurgence in American culture, makes the Holt community appear very backward-thinking and out of touch with current realities. The High School theater experience is a critical link between the children’s theater programs offered in the broader community and the advanced educational and community theater available for adults. It is telling that Holt-Dimondale Players and Riverwalk theater have included musical theater in their schedules in recent years. And it is exciting that

their productions have included a handful of Holt students, many of whom had received instruction in musical theater at the High School and were thus prepared and inspired to participate in the community in a more “professional” setting. Removing such instructional opportunity from the High School will be a detriment to our community and a disservice to our students. Last year’s musical production faced many challenges, including regrouping after the retirement of Mrs. Debbie Childers and rescheduling when the community

he decision of the Holt School board to eliminate funding for a High School musical is terribly misguided, in my opinion. It is hard to believe that this decision was given much consideration or sought the input of those affected prior to being made. Holt’s position as a Fine Arts magnet, built upon its acclaimed vocal and strong visual arts and creative writing offerings, should be expanded rather than diminished. Removing the ability of students to participate in a High School musical, in a day when vocal music in general and musical theater in particular are experiencing a

mourned the deaths of three students just as the musical entered its final stages of production. Nevertheless, the production generated much positive “buzz” and supported the educational development of a large cast and crew. It is clear that Mrs. Childers is deeply missed, but her retirement does not justify cutting musical theater altogether. The school board should be doing the hard work of looking at the numbers of students served by various offerings and evaluating the educational value compared to cost of those offerings, not simply dropping an important program because no teacher stepped up to the plate. And they should be recruiting someone to direct the musical. — Catherine McCarthy is a Holt resident.

Board holds off on motion to remove chairwoman Scott Davis sedavis@lsj.com

MASON — An effort to remove Shirley Rodgers, chairwoman of the Ingham County Road Commission, hit a roadblock Oct. 25 when the county commissioners declined to consider a motion to begin steps to force her from office. Despite heated pleas from agency employees and residents to remove her, the county Board of Commissioners voted 10-5 to refer the matter back to the County Services Committee for further review Nov. 1. The vote was mostly along party lines, with Brian McGrain being the lone Democrat to vote to at least consider the request on Oct. 24. “The pickets aren’t going away,” said Stockbridge Township Supervisor Paul Risner, referring to a protest outside the County Courthouse before the meeting. “We will be out there as long as it takes. ... Ms. Rodgers needs to go.” In recent weeks, there has been a rising call for Rodgers to step down because of what some see as upheaval at the agency. A recent consultant’s report contended the agency was riven with distrust among managers and employees, and it highlighted employee concerns that Rodgers improperly interjected herself into day-to-day management. Rodgers has said she merely was trying to implement fair hiring practices at the agency. Moreover, Rodgers and other road board members have been criticized for pushing for the ouster of two agency managers. Jim Benjamin, formerly operations director, was fired earlier this month, and Tina Henry, finance director, has agreed to retire by the end of the year.

Rodgers, who also chairs the Lansing school board, could not be reached Tuesday night for comment. The Oct. 25 resolution called for Rodgers to voluntarily step down, and if she refuses to do so, directs the Board of Commissioners to begin steps to force her removal. Rodgers, appointed by the Democraticcontrolled Board of Commissioners in 2007, is serving a six-year term and, under state law, can only be removed from office if there is evidence of “official misconduct,” “habitual or willful neglect of duty” or incompetence. After the meeting, county commissioner Randy Schafer, one of four Republicans who introduced the resolution, said Rodgers should be removed from office because she improperly initiated a police investigation into whether Benjamin twice used county resources for personal benefit. According to a police

report, Benjamin was cleared of any wrongdoing. County commissioner Mark Grebner, a Democrat and chairman of the Board of Commissioners, argued that the resolution should first be considered at the County Services Committee so that commissioners can obtain a legal opinion on the matter. Meanwhile, more than a dozen road commission employees and residents renewed their call for county commissioners to exercise greater oversight over the Road Commission. Before the meeting, several picketed with signs that read: “Remove Shirley Rodgers” “I drive in this area 250 miles a day, and I want to do whatever we can to make sure we have a Road Commission that works,” said Anne Clayton, a Lansing resident. Brett Campbell, a Road Commission supervisor, said he is worried that Benjamin’s departure will affect the agency’s ability

to deal with the coming snowfall. “We have winter right around the corner, and we’re going to have to

decide which roads to salt,” Campbell told county commissioners. “And you guys want to play politics.”

HOLT — There’s a new theatre group in the greater Lansing area. Over the Ledge Theatre Company debuts November 3 at Holt Senior High School (5885 W. Holt Road) with their production of “The Guys” (November 3-5 and 10-12 at 8 p.m.). truths people can discover in ordinary lives, and the connections we make with others and ourselves in times of tragedy. According to Dickson, 50 percent of the box office proceeds will go to

the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. “I wanted to do something different and positive with this first show”, said Dickson. “I’m proud to be able to share this impor-
