LCC: Middle College creates change for all students Continued from page 21

Lansing schools Superintendant T.C. Wallace Jr. called the project “long overdue.” While the district has long offered students the opportunity for dual enrollment in high school and college, “the difference in this program is that it’s not designed necessarily for the youngsters that are ahead of the curve,” he said. “It’s for any student that wishes to take that next step toward higher education. It’s a shift in thinking.” Middle colleges have been around for decades, but the idea has gained greater currency in recent years as educators and policy makers wrestle with the dual challenges of increasing educational attainment across the board and of addressing educational inequality. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s Early College High School Initiative has supported more than 200 schools. Early colleges are similar to middle colleges, but generally have higher expectations of the amount of college work students will complete. The state of Michigan began funding middle colleges in 2006.

And they seem to work. Mott Middle College in Flint was started 20 years ago as a drop-out prevention program for at-risk students. In recent years, more than 50 percent of graduates have gone on to college the semester after they graduate. The effectiveness of the program “comes back to this opportunity to reinvent themselves and to affirm that

they are bright, that they are higher education-potential students,” said Chery Wagonlander, the principal of the school since its founding.
