The Mason fire department’s special grass fire rig joined Delhi Township’s firefighters to battle a fire that destroyed a combine at the intersection of Grovenburg Road and McCue Road Friday, Aug. 5. Delhi’s firefighters saw that the combine was already a total loss and directed resources to begin controlling the field fire. The height of the crops involved made it difficult to control the flames using conventional methods, so additional resources were requested. Mutual aid was requested from Windsor Township Emergency Services for a grass rig, tanker and manpower. Additional aid was also called in from the Lansing Fire Department for a grass rig. An estimated 10 acres became involved before the fire was brought under control. MICHAEL KEITH\COURTESY PHOTO

Ingham parks unveils 18-hole disc golf course Will Kangas wkangas@lsj.com

INGHAM COUNTY — Longtime disc golfer Damian Redman wanted to make an impressive course and unveiled it at Burchfield Park. The park hosted the grand opening of the 18-hole course recently, complete with a ribbon-cutting and barbecue, even though its been open for a couple months and golfers have been raving about its fea-

tures on disc golf websites. Redman, of Grand Ledge, said he wanted to design a course from his experiences competing in tournaments around the country and was happy to do it when Ingham County Parks representatives approached him. “The idea was to make a championship course that is flexible enough for all skill levels,” he said. The course, which spans about 100 acres, has both “short” and “long” holes

(called baskets) and tees, which enables golfers to customize how difficult they want to make it for themselves. Redman, an MSU landscape architecture graduate, said he wants to design disc golf courses as a career. Ingham County Parks and Recreation Director Willis Bennett said Burchfield Park was the best location because of the amount See COURSE, Page 6

Mason’s alternative ed thriving MASON – With its second year at the James C. Harvey Education Center complete (formerly Cedar Street Elementary School) Mason High School’s alternative education program is helping more students graduate than ever. “Some students just don’t learn in the traditional high school setting, and need something different,” said teacher Mary Hunter. Mason High School Summit Campus is a hybrid alternative education program for ninth through twelfth grade students. Summit Campus students take both teacherled classes and online classes via Education 2020, a leading provider of both core and elective online instruction. As a department of Mason High School, qualified students may return to the traditional high school for classes like band, art, and advanced courses not offered at the alternative education campus. Also, Summit students are eligible to take part in most extracurricular activities that the main campus offers. Students taking online courses work at their own pace, both at school

and at home, because online classes are available 24 hours per day. During school hours a certified teacher is available to offer both academic and technical support during each online class period. Students have the opportunity to graduate early or to make-up credit for graduation since online classes are self-paced. Teacher-led classes at Summit Campus have an approximate 17:1 student to teacher ratio allowing Summit teachers to differentiate their instruction while building close relationships with their students. One example of a differentiated activity Summit teacher Jeremy Mills uses is a reenactment of the Ho Chi Minh trail in which students experience the conditions American soldiers endured during the Vietnam War as they traverse an obstacle course complete with booby traps, sound, and intense heat while wearing military clothing and camouflage face paint. “Every year the Ho Chi Minh trail lesson is one of my students’ favorite activities. I have alumni come back years later and ask me if I still use it,” Mills

said. Despite differences in location, class size, and instruction, students at MHS Summit Campus must meet the same rigorous graduation requirements as students at Mason High School. Students meeting the requirements for a Mason High School diploma are eligible to walk in the Mason High School commencement, and receive the same diploma as other Mason High School graduates. Fifteen Summit Campus students earned their high school diplomas during the 2010-2011 school year. As other local alternative education high schools close or downsize, MHS Summit Campus is looking to expand for the 2011-2012 school year. Currently, Summit Campus is enrolling qualified resident and non-resident students for the upcoming school year. Interested students or parents/ guardians should visit the school’s website at: http:/ /mhssummitcampus.weebly.com or call the Summit Campus main office at (517) 676-6498 for more information.

MASON — Bring your lawn chairs and blankets to downtown Mason on Thursday evening Aug. 25 and enjoy the big band sound of Twilight Memories, a 17-piece community band. This free concert is sponsored by the Dart Container Corporation and hosted by the Mason Area Chamber of Commerce, and will feature the second new band in this year’s Thursday Night Live Courthouse Concert series line-up. The chamber is nearing the end of their seventh season of hosting their summer series of live musical entertainment presented by Independent Bank on select Thursday evenings. These free outdoor concerts take place at 6 p.m. on

the west Ingham County Courthouse lawn in downtown Mason. All concerts are weather permitting. Mason’s Optimist Club will be selling hot dogs, chips and pop nearby, so families can enjoy a picnic dinner during the concerts. Many concert-goers stop by restaurants and stores in Mason before and afterwards. Robin King-Fuller of Independent Bank, chair of the committee organizing the concerts, said that “the chamber is hosting these concerts again as a way to bring more fun and excitement to downtown Mason.” She is happy that most of the past six years’ performers return for encore performances. “In addition, we’ve scheduled a couple of new groups this summer, like Twilight Memories, to add even more excitement,” she said.

Sessions aimed at gaining input from residents MASON — The Mason Planning Commission and the Mason Zoning and Development Department will be holding three Community Visioning Workshops to obtain public input on the city’s new Master Plan. Residents, business leaders and other members of the community are invited to come share their thoughts and concerns about the future of Mason. “This is essentially one of the first steps in the Master Plan process,” said David Haywood, director of zoning and development for the City of Mason. “It is very important to get the public involved in city planning. These workshops will help create a strong vision for our

neighborhoods and for various development, redevelopment and revitalization efforts in the community.”The workshops will be held at Mason City Hall throughout the month of September. There will be two evening sessions on Sept. 12 and 29, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. There will also be a mid-morning session on Sept. 20, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Light refreshments will be provided. “The Planning Commission has been working very hard on the master plan,” remarked Ed Reeser, Planning Commission chairman. “These visioning workshops will provide an informal environment where members of the community can voice their concerns and express ideas regarding

the future of our city.” The three workshops will focus on positive and negative aspects of the community, challenges and priority areas and visions for neighborhoods and the city at large. For those who cannot attend, the city is also creating a questionnaire that will be available in electronic and hard copy format. This will provide another medium for public input on the master plan. “We really want the community to be involved in this process,” Haywood commented. “Our goal is to have a master plan that reflects the sentiments of our residents, businesses and community leaders.”

The series concludes with a concert by the Mason High School Band on Thursday, Sept. 15, led by Beth Bousfield, MHS Band Director. The Mason High School Cheer Squad will join them in the program sponsored by CP Federal Credit Union. This last concert in September will also mark the beginning of Mason’s “Down Home Days” festival. The chamber also is one of the sponsors of the second Sun Dried Music Fest; held two days later on Saturday, Aug. 27 on the downtown Mason streets surrounding the Ingham County Courthouse. The free event is hosted by the City of Mason Downtown Development Authority and features nine bands playing from noon to midnight. Vendors and family attractions are also part of the Sun Dried Music Fest on Saturday. An old-fashioned street dance on Friday evening, Aug. 26, will provide a bridge between the two music events.

of space needed. “Plus, if people come to play the course they will also be able to see the many other fun things to do at the park,” Bennett said. Construction started in late summer last year, he said. The cost to construct the course came in under budget at just over $20,000, he said. “We will be able to make up the cost quickly because of the user fees,” he said. A day pass for the course costs $4, with children under 12 playing free with an adult.

Redman said the most unique part of the course is probably “the wall.” Hole No. 2 greets golfers with a 10-foot wall in front of them. The course has sand traps and strategic placement behind trees to make it more challenging as well. “I wanted to make it the top place to play in Michigan,” Redman said. The 18th hole features a basket on top of a man-made waterfall. The course already hosted the “Burchfield Park Open” which featured some top players in the state, Redman said. Burchfield Park is in the southwest corner of the township, 331 Grovenburg Road.

ing committee that is very active. “They are looking at some of the many ways to try and deal with the issue as well as inform staff and students about it,” Dillingham said. Holt’s bullying policy was approved in November, 2002. Now nine years later board members decided it was necessary to include cyberbullying. “It’s bad,” Holt Deputy Superintendent Scott Szpara said. “Have you heard of slam books? There is an online version — and it is not good for anyone.”

MARK DILLINGHAM Mason superintendent

“Slam books” started as paper journals passed around junior high classrooms that would have questions in them, such as, “Who is the worst dressed teacher?” and “Who is the most popular girl?” The name came from the action taken when a teacher would walk nearby – the book would have to be slammed shut and quickly covered by other books. Szpara said an online version is gaining popularity in junior high circles at Holt and so something

needed to be done, as well as dealing with bullying on Facebook and other social media sites. The Holt School Board amended its current bullying policy on Aug. 8 to include “Cyberbullying” which is described as “the willful and repeated harassment and intimidation of a person through the use of digital technologies.” That includes not only social media sites but blogs, instant messaging and even cell phone texts.

The new policy even makes it clear about enforcement outside the school walls. “Though an incident … may occur off campus … if a student’s ability to receive an education or a school’s ability to provide an education … is significantly impaired … disciplinary sanctions may be issued,” the new policy says. The result could be suspension or expulsion, and enforcement will be aided by the district’s new police officer, Mary Brown. Brown was hired this year by both Holt Public Schools and Delhi Township and will split the cost. Brown has nine years of experience as a deputy with the Ingham County Sheriff’s Department.

Library offers ‘geek’ campaign for users If you’ve spent any time in the past few months at the library, on our Web site or even driving around reading billboards, you may have noticed a lot of “geek” talk. For example, columnist John Schneider geeks the First Amendment. TV news anchor Jane Aldrich geeks happy news. The Big Lug geeks (surprise!) baseball. This fun library awareness campaign is called “Geek the Library,” and it features eye-catching posters and displays that focus on what people are passionate about — in other words, what they “geek.” What does all this have to do with libraries? To “geek” is to enjoy, celebrate, have an intense passion for something. Our “Geek the Library” campaign was launched to remind you that no matter what your interest or passion, we can help by offering information and resources. Next time you stop in to return your items or check out new ones, be sure to let us know what you geek. We can point you to books, movies, Web sites and other resources you never even thought of. MASON POLICE REPORT MASON — Between Aug. 9 to 15 the Mason Police Department investigated 57 reported incidents involving a variety of activities, both criminal and noncriminal. These are some of those incidents: Aug. 9 — • Officers assisted a local ambulance service with a subject who was acting “weird.” Upon their arrival it had already been decided the subject would be transported to a medical facility, as that person had just been released from jail, had nowhere to go, and had requested medical evaluation. • An officer and a deputy were dispatched to a Mason residence on a fight call. The caller, who was not very cooperative with the Dispatch Center, stated he and his brother were physically fighting and one of them might have a club. Upon arrival, the officers could hear screaming and the sounds of a struggle inside the house. Through a window they also observed two males fighting, both appearing to be equally engaged in the fight. After gaining entrance and securing the suspects, it was determined they had been arguing for a long time prior to the fight; both were intoxicated-one with a breath alcohol content of .20 percent, and the other with a .22 percent-and both had minor injuries to their head and neck areas. One also had a warrant out of another department. He was arrested on that warrant and on the domestic assault charge. The other brother was arrested for domestic assault. They were lodged in the Ingham County Jail. Domestic Assault warrant requests were sent to the Ingham County Prosecutor’s Office, but both were denied, with the rationale being that it was a “mutual affray between two drunk brothers who live together.”

One brother is being charged with a probation violation for having consumed alcohol. • An officer was dispatched to a local residence to take a late malicious destruction of property report. The victim stated she had an argument with her husband two days previously because she had told her stepson not to eat candy before dinner, which had made her husband upset. This allegedly led to the husband damaging a bathroom door and aggravating the victim’s pre-existing injury when the door hit her arm. After the victim left the residence, the suspect continued to do further damage in the house. When the officer was able to speak with the suspect, the man stated he had been upset with his wife and she had shut herself in a room, which made him more angry, so he punched the door and broke the frame. He stated he did not intend for the door to hit his wife’s arm, but it did. The victim was supplied with victim rights and personal protection pamphlets, and the report will be sent to the Prosecutor’s office for review. Aug. 10 — • The detective received a message to call back a secretary from another school district in reference to a suspicious situation. The complainant stated that she had received calls from a man who was trying to contact a student from a different school. The man told her he had seen an article about the boy and a picture he had drawn, and wanted to contact him. Because the school and student in question were not in Mason, the detective passed the information along to the proper jurisdiction. • Officers were dispatched to a business on West Maple Street where a larceny just had occurred. The business owner/victim stated the male suspect had come into his

facility and asked to look at a ring. Once the suspect had it in his hand, he turned and ran out the door. Two days previously the same male had come into the business with another male, stated he was getting married, and viewed several rings. From the description given of the suspect and the suspect vehicle, the officers were able to identify the thief and, as a result, recover the ring. A warrant request will be forwarded to the Ingham County Prosecutor’s Office for review of charges. • Officers were dispatched to a Mason residence for a larceny report. The victim stated that power tools had been taken from her garage. A possible suspect has been identified, and the case remains open. • Officers were dispatched to a residence where a husband and wife were reported to be fighting. Once inside the home it was obvious that an altercation had occurred, as furniture was turned over and numerous miscellaneous items and food were all over the floor. The male, who was extremely agitated and was yelling and swearing, finally calmed down and told the officers he and his wife had been arguing, but he couldn’t remember what started the fight. He did remember grabbing his wife’s face and smacking her, but claimed it was in self defense because she had choked and punched him in the face. He also admitted to being an alcoholic, having done a lot of drinking that night (he had a .20 BAL), and needing help. The wife, who obviously had been in a physical dispute, stated she didn’t know what had set him off, but her husband had been drinking and was angry. He started pushing her around, slapping, and then choking her. Any Continued on page 16

MASON POLICE REPORT Continued from page 14

injuries she had inflicted on him in return were due to her trying to get him off her. Both subjects were checked out by ambulance personnel. The suspect was arrested for domestic assault-intent to do great bodily harm, and was transported to jail. The victim was provided with domestic violence and PPO information. • Officers responded to a fight call at a local apartment complex where the caller stated she could hear screaming. Upon arrival, the officers saw a male subject-whom they were familiar with and knew was on probationattempting to quickly exit from one of the apartments and detained him. He was visibly intoxicated and denied having come from that apartment, being involved in anything, and being on probation. The officers were aware the suspect did not belong in the apartment he had exited, but could not find anyone home. They did make contact with other residents of the complex and discovered the suspect had been involved in a verbal fight with his sister, who lived in the apartment beside the one he had exited, but that she had already left. The suspect was arrested and issued a citation for public intoxication and causing a public disturbance. He was taken to jail and lodged there, at that time having a blood alcohol level of .21 percent. The incident remains under investigation. • An officer was dispatched to another apartment complex to check on the welfare of a female who might be suicidal. Prior to the officer getting there, emergency medical services had arrived and advised the subject was not suicidal, nor did she need medical attention. The officer spoke with the female, who stated she suspected her ex-boyfriend had made the call. Her apartment was checked to make sure there were no obvious signs of a suicide attempt, and the complaint was closed. Aug. 11 — • Officers were dispatched to the parking lot of a local financial institution on a subject with a gun complaint. The suspect vehicle was in the drive thru, and the offi-

Brookshire’s Annual

cers blocked it in and ordered both occupants out of the vehicle at gunpoint. The female driver and male passenger were belligerent with the officers and deputies who had arrived, and the male was extremely animated, yelling, “shoot me, just shoot me” as he approached a deputy in an aggressive manner. He stopped his actions when confronted with a Taser, but continued to be verbally abusive. The female also was assaultive verbally and physically, kicking one of the officers in the leg when she was being handcuffed. The couple was detained separately while their vehicle was searched, with no weapon being found. Investigation revealed that the trouble had started when the suspects had driven into the drive thru and were screaming and using foul language at one another. A female customer, parked in a lane on the other side of them, told the detective they were so loud that she was unable to hear the teller inside. Due to the obscenities, she looked in their direction and stated, “I have kids in here,” which set the man off. He began calling her foul names, telling her to mind her own business, and threatening to “take care of “her and “beat her ass.” His words and behavior terrified the victim, and she didn’t know what to do. A moment later a representative of the financial institution came outside to the suspects’ car and placed a hand on the hood, which drew the male suspect’s attention away from her and to the newcomer. The suspect opened the vehicle door, yelled at the male victim to remove his hands from the vehicle, got out, and advanced towards him, taking up a fighting stance. When questioned later, the male victim stated he had been advised by personnel about the situation at the drive thru and had gone outside to see what was happening. When he tried to diffuse the situation, the male suspect got out of the car and started yelling and swearing at him. At one point the suspect reached into his shirt with one hand, and the victim feared he was getting a knife or a gun. He ended up retreating back into the building, having the female victim drive around and join him inside with the children. There were many witnesses to the incident, as the yelling

was so loud it could be heard through the closed windows, and people inside were able to watch the altercation via the closed circuit TV. Warrants are being sought against the disruptive couple through the City Attorney’s office for violation of City Ordinance No.42-42. Aug. 12 — • An officer heard an Ingham County call concerning several kids messing around with a mailbox at a residence outside the city. Suspecting Mason youth might be involved, he was on alert, so when he saw a vehicle matching the description that had been given, he stopped to talk with the occupants. It turned out they were the Continued on page 17

MASON POLICE REPORT perpetrators, so they were turned over to an IC deputy who arrived at the scene. • An officer was informed that the couple who had caused all the problems at the financial institution the previous day was back again, this time, inside, where they were causing a disturbance. When he approached the building, he could hear sounds of a female yelling, and once inside, could hear her yelling, “Give me my money!” The officer entered the office where the suspect was and advised her there was no reason for her to be so loud. The suspect started yelling about the previous day’s incident, stating she was not violating the law and could talk as loud as she wanted. The officer advised her of the local ordinance against such loud and boisterous activity and told her she needed to stop yelling, to which she responded that the business was going on regardless of her actions and she was not disrupting anything. The employee dealing with the rowdy couple stated their account was being closed and at the completion of that transaction she wanted them escorted out. When the officer attempted to have the male suspect talk with him elsewhere, the male refused to do anything but invite the officer to go out to the parking lot to fight him, which the officer declined. The female completed her business and walked outside, but the man had to be told to leave. Once outside he continued to challenge the officer to a fight until the female talked him into leaving in the vehicle. A charge of disorderly person is being requested against the female, and a charge of interfering with a police offi-

COME

cer is being sought against the male through the City Attorney’s Office. • An officer took a late larceny from auto report from a female who had come into the department. The victim stated she had been driving her vehicle and had made two stops in Mason before arriving at her third stop. It was then she discovered she was missing important papers from where she had placed them on her passenger seat. She had no suspects and was provided with an ID Theft booklet and advised to file a report immediately should she find any discrepancies on her credit report or any new activity she had not authorized. • Officers were dispatched to the 100 block of North Cedar Street for a property damage accident. At the scene they found the vehicle rested upon a cement pillar and two people walking around. The two stated they were fine and refused medical attention. The female driver claimed she was a student driver and was trying to get some experience driving by taking her boyfriend to the store. She stated she got confused on which pedal was which, and pressed the accelerator when she meant to press the brake. Despite her denying she had been drinking, investigation revealed she had a blood alcohol level of .17 percent. She was arrested for operating while intoxicated, taken to a medical facility for evaluation, and then released. MASON POLICE REPORT

Ingham County Community News

Continued from page 17

• While patrolling eastbound on Columbia near Barnes, officers observed five subjects standing on the side of the roadway by two vehicles. They were making a lot of noise, there was a case of beer in plain sight, and one of them appeared to have blood on his face. Two of the group stated their car had broken down, and two others stated they had been attempting to push the vehicle off the road. None of these appeared to have been drinking, which was not the case of the fifth person who was visibly intoxicated and had blood all over his face. He stated he had tripped and hit his face on the curb, but didn’t need medical attention. Due to the severity of his injuries and the fact he had a blood alcohol level of .27 percent, an ambulance was called and he was transported to the hospital. A sixth person was sitting on the curb with a can of beer next to her. Despite claiming she’d not been drinking, the 17-yearold female smelled strongly of intoxicants and had a blood alcohol level of .14 percent. She did finally admit to having consumed two beers before receiving her citation for minor in possession of alcohol. She was given a ride home by one of the others. • An officer was dispatched to the 700 block of West Ash Street for a larceny of a push mower that had just occurred. The victim stated he had been

mowing but went inside for awhile, leaving the mower in his yard. A short time later his neighbor stopped over and asked if his mower was missing. The neighbor had observed a white pickup truck stopped near his house and then observed a couple lifting a mower into the back of it. He got

to wondering afterwards if it belonged to the victim, which it turned out it did. The case remains under investigation. • An officer responded to a malicious destruction of property complaint in the 100 block of Carom Circle. The victim stated that sometime between 9:30

p.m. the previous night and 12:30 p.m. that date someone had keyed his vehicle while it was parked in the lot. There is a history of other vehicles also being damaged while parked in this same parking spot, and, as in the newest case, a suspect has been identified, but so far no witnesses have

actually seen this person damage any of the vehicles. Aug. 15 — • An officer was dispatched to a business on North Cedar Street for a late larceny of gas report. The complainant stated the male suspect pumped gas into his car and then drove off

without making any attempt to pay for it. The suspect has been identified, and a request for a retail fraud 3rd warrant is being forwarded to the Ingham County Prosecutor’s Office. Note: This is the same suspect who stole the ring from the business owner a few days prior to this.
