HOLT — Holt’s Emilio Garcia Jr. and his family answered the question Why do we Relay? “I decided to form a team this year, Meo’s Team, because of Meo (Emilio Garcia Jr.) our 3-year-old son and grandson who was diagnosed Feb. 15, 2010 with Rhabdomyosarcoma,” he said. “To say the least, the last year has been one of the hardest years of our lives. Meo was a happy little boy with a twin brother, Dominic; a 11-year-old sister, Katie; and a 2-week-old brother, Quintin, when he was diagnosed. The strain it put on the family was beyond anything we could imagine. “The good that came

from it was all the friends and family that came forward and offered support, both emotionally and financially for Meo and our family. We, in turn, want to do everything we can to help fight cancer through research. A relay team seemed the perfect place to start. If we can save other children from going through what Meo has been through, we will have accomplished our goal. We

are, at this time, ready to cross the finish line. If Meo’s scans come back clear, he will go on the maintenance program. He has gone through a year of chemotherapy and 27 days of radiation to fight the cancer that was growing. Thanks to his wonderful medical staff at Sparrow Hospital and the MSU Pediatric Oncology Clinic, Meo has fought and we believe is winning the battle. Imagine a life with-

out cancer; only research will accomplish this. As of today, Meo is cancer free. The family is beyond ecstatic. He goes into the maintenance program and will have scans every 3 months and blood draws monthly. Relay For Life of Holt is Friday, June 24 to Saturday, June 25 from 1 p.m. to 1 p.m. at the Holt High School football field. Everyone is invited to participate

in the 24 hours of this event. There is no admission fee and you do not have to be a member of a team. Come out and experience Relay; become involved in the fight against cancer so the world will be a place with more birthdays. Meo (Emilio Garcia Jr) is the reason his family formed a Relay For Life team. —Gail Hayhoe Relay For Life of Holt PR Chair
