EATON RAPIDS - There is one contested Eaton Rapids City Council seat on the Nov. 8 ballot. Both Thomas Norris and Kiefer Tyler vying to represent Precinct 3. Norris, 45, manages the shipping department of Bridgewater Interiors, an auto supply firm. He served as a volunteer firefighter in Eaton Rapids in 1990, was on the planning commission, chaired the Fourth of July committee four times and was on the city council for about 13 years. Kiefer Tyler, 21, is an Eaton Rapids High School graduate who works for AT&T installing high-speed Internet and cable in homes. A member of the local Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), he is trained in CPR and ready to assist in emergency situations, like floods and tornadoes. He is a member of First Baptist Church. Here are the candidates’ answers to a few questions posed by the Eaton Rapids Community News . Q: What will be your main priority for the city of Eaton Rapids and what specific steps will you suggest to achieve it? Norris: Eaton Rapids is not unique in the problems

we face in today’s economy. In this ever-changing, competitive job market we have to use all the tools we can to encourage investment and job creation in our community. We can accomplish this by utilizing our available work force, as well as providing affordable properties and the infrastructure necessary to build new businesses while expanding our existing industries. Keeping utility rates low and affordable has a direct impact on that encouragement and has historically been an incentive in bringing companies here from other communities. Tyler: I don’t have an agenda, but I want the best for Eaton Rapids and eventually want to raise a family here. I would, however, like to see more things for youth to do and want to see that everyone in the community has a voice. Q: What other important issues will you focus on? Tyler: I would like to focus on keeping up the roads coming into the city because that’s how people See CANDIDATES, Page 3
EATON RAPIDS - The recent Holocaust Exhibit at Eaton Rapids High School was a powerful experience. Entry to the exhibit hall through a huge wooden door led a visitor to very creative projects designed by three senior English classes. The floor was strewn with paper footprints, each of which represented 100 Holocaust victims. Just as for the concentration camp Jews, there were two ways to turn at the end of the hall. One led to the outside world, in this case the rest of the high school. The other led to exhibits depicting death, complete with senior Austin Fears in a gas mask. Fears said he was representing members of the Nazis SS disinfectant squads, whose job it was to dispose of corpses. “It astounds me - the fact that one mass of people can just eliminate another mass,” Fears said. “It’s hard to believe.” Fears’ response to the horror of the Holocaust was echoed by other students. Kaila Brown constructed a replica of the horror of Kristallnacht, the Night of Glass Nov. 9 to 10, 1938, when Jewish neighborhoods were destroyed. Brown built a street of shops littered with shards of what looked like real window glass. Evan Lounsberry and Ashley Lemus used wood siding and metal roofing to create their own version of a concentration camp barracks, complete with shelves packed with victims. Phil Beemer, Eric Freemire and Craig Wells depicted the Warsaw Rebellion with a cardboard “building” burned around the edges as if a riot had broken out. A nearby fog

Brysk was four when she and her family hid from the Nazis in a forest. Five seniors decided on what may have been the most unusual project. Unable to locate their own survivor, they decided to live for two days as close to the way concentration camp victims lived as they could. The group produced a video diary and each member made a personal one as well. Housing services plans to host silent auction CHARLOTTE — Housing
Services for Eaton County (HSEC) will be holding a silent auction fundraiser on its Web site from Nov. 28 through Dec. 16. Donations for this effort can be dropped off at the HSEC office located at 319 S. Cochran, Charlotte by Nov. 21 to allow time to take pictures and upload
the information to the Web site. Your generous donation will be auctioned off to the highest bidder during the auction. All proceeds will assist the agency to prevent local homelessness, including evictions and foreclosures. Currently, the agency is running short of direct

CHARLOTTE — In September, the Michigan Legislature voted to place a limit on how much taxpayers can be asked to pay for public employee health insurance costs. Unless a local unit of government — if it isn’t a school district — doesn’t want to follow the limits. School districts have no choice as to whether they will comply. In October, the Eaton County Board of Commissioners said, in effect, ‘thanks but no thanks’ to the state for its limits as they apply to the county. Before the vote was taken at the commission’s Oct. 19 meeting, Commissioner Sue Hoffman (R-Grand Ledge) told the board, “The state should not be telling the county
how to spend its money.” With no dissenting votes, commissioners voted to exempt Eaton County from the requirements of Act 152 for the 2012 calendar year. Two of the 15 commissioners (Hoffman and Wayne Ridge (R-Charlotte)) abstained because their spouses are county employees. Commissioner Roger Eakin (R-Dimondale) was not present for the vote. Michigan’s Act 152, signed into law by Gov. Rick Snyder on Sept. 24, limits public employers’ payments for employee health insurance to $15,000 per year or 80 percent of the cost for family coverage, whichever is greater. The law allows cities, villages, townships and counties, but not school districts, to vote annually to exempt themselves
from the requirements of the law. A two-thirds vote is required. In the resolution exempting Eaton County from the law’s requirements, commissioners noted the potential cost of expected litigation over the legality of the law, as well as the fact the state of Michigan had effectively chosen to exempt itself from the law’s requirements.
The act does not apply to unionized employees with contracts in place as of the date of the law, for the duration of their existing contracts. Currently, according to the county controller’s office, 422 county employees carry health insurance. Of these, 215 are union members and 207 are not represented by unions. Commission Ways and Means Chair Blake Mulder
(R-Oneida Twp.) told the commission he felt it was unfair to single out nonunion employees. “It is unconscionable to impose a limit on payments to one part of the employees and not to others,” he said. Future exemptions would be subject to annual votes, each requiring twothirds majorities. For 2011-12, Eaton County employees with health insurance pay five

CHARLOTTE — October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast Cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among Michigan women. The prevention and early detection of breast cancer is a key component of the Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program (BCCCP) at the Health Department. By offering clinical breast exams and free mammograms to qualifying women, the BCCCP program is helping in the fight against this devastating disease. The communities of Barry and Eaton counties can make a difference

by encouraging women to complete their monthly self-breast exam and to schedule their yearly mammograms. In 2009, the American Cancer Society estimates that 6,480 Michigan women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 1,350 women in the state will die from the disease.
The facts Early screening is estimated to reduce breast cancer deaths by 20 to 25 percent. This means you have the power to do something. Small steps like talking
to your health care provider about recommended screenings for breast cancer can reduce your risks. Although every woman is at risk for developing breast cancer, several factors have been shown to increase risk. These include: • Increasing age • Personal history of breast cancer • Family history of breast cancer (especially pre-menopausal onset) in a mother, sister, daughter or other multiple relatives • Never giving birth or
having a first child after the age of 30 • High breast tissue density • High-dose radiation to the chest • Early onset of menstruation
Screening The Michigan Cancer Consortium recommends the following breast cancer screening guidelines: Breast Self Exam (BSE) • Monthly BSE for all women age 20 and older • Women should report any breast change
promptly to their health care providers Clinical Breast Exam (CBE) • Every one to three years for women in their 20s and 30s who do not have any breast symptoms • Annually for women age 40 and older • CBE should be included as part of a periodic health exam by a health professional Mammography • Annual screening for women of average risk starting at age 40. Remember, early detection is the key to
survival. With regular screening, breast cancer is more likely to be detected at an earlier stage when it is most treatable. The five-year survival rate among women whose breast cancer has not spread beyond the breast at the time of diagnosis is 98 percent. In observance of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, remind a woman in your life to remember their monthly self breast exams and yearly mammograms.

Blood drives are planned throughout area LANSING — The need for blood is constant. However, the supply of blood sometimes isn’t. Blood donations can dip around the holidays, making it important for donors to make and keep appointments to ensure a strong and stable blood supply for sick and injured people. “Typically, during the holiday season we see a decline in the number of people who come out to donate blood,” said Monica Stoneking, communications manager for the Great Lakes Region of the American Red Cross. “We hope that individuals make blood donation a part of their holiday plans.” Patients rely on blood from volunteer donors. In fact, patients across the U.S. need more than 44,000 units of blood each day to treat emergency and ongoing medical conditions. Locally, about 700 blood donations are needed daily for patients in hospitals across the state served by the Great Lakes Region of the Red Cross. In the United States, about 38 percent of the population is eligible to donate blood. However, less than five percent of the population actually makes an appointment to donate. As an added incentive for donors, everyone who comes out to donate blood or platelets October and November has a chance to win a $250 Meijer gift card. MASON - Eaton Rapids ended their 2011 boys soccer season with a record of 12-10, after falling to Dexter, 4-0 in the Division 2 district semifinals at Mason on Oct. 21. A clean breakaway left Masteller helpless and made the final score 4-0. The team lost, but it wasn’t from a lack of trying according to Greyhound head coach Matt Boersma. “They played hard,”
Boersma said. “That’s something we couldn’t fault, the effort was as high as it’s been all year.” And so ends a season that was quite an emotional roller coaster for Eaton Rapids, which began with a trip to the prestigious National Soccer Festival in Ft. Wayne Ind. The season also marked the end of the line for a very strong senior class, which will be very difficult to replace.
