LOWERING THE COUNTY’S DROPOUT RATE

Relevant Academy has new, virtual approach Rachel Greco rgreco@lsj.com

CHARLOTTE — Kevin Munroe, 19, admits the pace of a traditional classroom isn’t for him. The local resident hit a wall his freshman year at Charlotte High School. “I was lazy,” he recalled. The last three years were spent at the school district’s alternative education program, the Learning Center — where he said he began loving school again. “It really turned my life around,” he explained. And this fall Munroe, along with over 60 students, moved from that program to it’s replacement. Relevant Academy is a new public school program under the jurisdiction of the Eaton Intermediate School District — those enrolled live all over the county. Located in what was Galewood Elementary, the school district closed the building this summer, Relevant Academy is based on a new approach to reaching 16 to 19 year-olds who have dropped out of high school. Relying on a largely on-line curriculum and a non-traditional classroom setting, the academy demands its 150 students take responsibility for advancing their high school education.

In their hands Angie Zeller, the associate superintendent of EISD and now the director of Relevant Academy, said students enrolled spend the first three weeks of school attending all-day, weekly class time.

“These kids are smart and they want structure. They’ve always wanted that. Here we can give them what they need.” ERIC EMERY, teacher But after that, students are only required to spend six hours a week at school. They are instead loaned lap tops and expected to progress in their chosen courses on their own time. What it amounts to, said Zeller, is an expected 30 hours a week of learning time and a ton of personal responsibility. “The idea is that it’s their time,” explained Zeller. “As efficiently as they can get through their course work, they can take their next course.” Munroe expects to be at the academy through this school year. He should have his diploma by then and is already taking classes at Lansing Community College as well. The structure of Relevant Academy is something he’s still adjusting to. Instead of standard classrooms, students move between four rooms, each with a different format. One even focuses on changing attitudes and lifting one’s selfesteem. Students work independently but have access to four teachers, each specializing in a core subject area, Zeller explains. So far, Munroe’s impression is

RACHEL GRECO/LCN positive. “You do get more time with a subject, if you need it,” he said. “I think it works as long as you apply yourself. They give you lap tops, they give you wireless and it’s on you.” Exactly, said Zeller, who said the Relevant students are there because they want to be. It’s a recipe for success. The academy adheres to the same Michigan Merit Curricu-

lum as a traditional high school, but Zeller said students believe Relevant’s approach will produce better results. “The traditional learning environment doesn’t work for these kids,” said Zeller. “I do feel like this will be successful.” What academy staff hope to change is Eaton County’s high school dropout rate, now at 23 percent. “Almost a quarter of the stu-

dents is a large number no matter what you compare it to,” added Zeller. Relevant teacher Eric Emery taught at Charlotte schools’ Learning Center for 13 years before joining the new program. He points to two key factors in Relevant’s likely success. First, he said, a traditional classroom is the wrong environment See ACADEMY, Page 6

Our students need support against bullying I

saw a great definition of bullying in this month’s Educational Leadership, which focused on promoting respectful schools. Bullying is simply the use of unequal, coercive power. The bully really likes to show his or her audience that he can dom-

will not be defended. In the schools, we most often see bullies hit, threaten, and verbally abuse other kids. In this issue, I came across a list of strategies that students used when dealing with a bully. The percentage in parentheses is the percentage of time the strategy was used.

that they were safe, the situations improved. These adults can be parents, grandparents, teachers and school counselors. At Eaton Rapids Public Schools and other school districts, we have worked hard to strengthen ways that students can connect with one another and the staff. In both the short and long term, it is extremely important that we help both those who mistreat and who are mistreated. Everyone, including bullies, thrives in environments that are respectful and safe. Bill DeFrance is the superintendent at Eaton Rapids Public Schools.

Munroe said he’s as ready as ever to earn a diploma and take the next step in education. His aim is to go into architecture and transfer from Lansing Community College to a four-year university after he earns a diploma from Relevant Academy. “My motivation is to get out of high school, get to college and do what I want to do,” he said. That kind of dedication is not a surprise Emery. He said the students at Relevant academy are bright and motivated. “When you send kids from a high school to an alternative ed., and ask them to do the same thing you’re setting them up for failure,” said Emery. “These kids are smart, and they want structure. They’ve always wanted that. Here we can give them what they need.”

Increased education helps keep infants safe CHARLOTTE — In an effort to raise awareness about the importance of establishing a safe sleep environment for infants, Governor Rick Snyder has declared September as Infant Safe Sleep Month in Michigan. Sudden Unexpected Infant Death, or SUID, is Michigan’s leading cause of preventable infant death. Michigan currently ranks 37th among states for overall infant mortality and the state’s infant mortality rate, 7.5 deaths per 1,000 live births, remains one of the highest in the nation. In 2009, 63 Michigan babies, or more than one child every week, died of accidental suffocation or strangulation in bed. “The same loving precautions caregivers practice while a baby is awake should be continued around the clock,” said Olga Dazzo, Director of the Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH). “There are many preventative steps a parent can take to ensure that their child sleeps safe and sound.” In accordance with the American Academy of

Pediatrics, MDCH recommends these measures to ensure infant safe sleeping: • Infants should be placed to sleep on their backs. • Use a firm sleep surface and firm mattress covered only with a fitted sheet. • Remove soft objects and loose bedding from the crib (no pillows, quilts, comforters, stuffed toys, bumper pads, or other soft objects). • Do not share a bed with your baby. • Avoid allowing your baby to become overheated. • Encourage “Tummy Time”; it’s important to practice supervised tummy time while your baby is awake to build strong neck and shoulder muscles. • Make sure everyone caring for your baby knows these guidelines. Michigan is fortunate to have many public and private partners at both the state and local levels working together to protect children. The Safe Sleep Advisory Team, which includes representatives from MDCH, Department

of Education, Department of Human Services, Michigan Public Health Institute and Tomorrow’s Child, has been working to reduce infant deaths related to unsafe sleep environments. “We are so lucky in the state of Michigan to have partners working together to help ensure our babies are safe,” said Shannon Stotenbur-Wing, director of the Center for Child and

LANSING — With school back in session and fall fast approaching, the American Red Cross is encouraging all eligible donors to roll up their sleeves to help save lives. Every year, students nationwide join the American Red Cross as blood donors and blood drive sponsors, all in an effort to help hospital patients in need. But, all donors, whether they are students or not, are encouraged to make an appointment to help save lives. “Students are a major force in building and maintaining the blood supply,” said Sharon Jaksa, CEO for the Great Lakes Region of the American Red Cross. “But, we need the help of all eligible donors to be able meet the needs of hospital patients.” High schools and colleges sponsor about 19 percent of Red Cross blood drives in the coverage area of Indiana, Michigan and Ohio. Donors through these drives can range in age from 16 to 25, and give about 30 percent of blood collected in the parts of Indiana, Michigan and Ohio served by the Red Cross. In the United States, about 38 percent of the population is eligible to donate blood. However, less than five percent of the population actually makes an appointment to donate. As an added incentive for donors, everyone who comes out to donate blood or platelets in September and October has a chance to win a $250 Meijer gift card. For more information about the Meijer promotion and other campaigns in your area or to make an appointment to donate, call 1-800-REDCROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit redcrossblood.org. The following is a list of American Red Cross blood drives in the area: • Sept. 26: Lansing Blood Donation Center, 1729 E. Saginaw, 1-6:45 p.m. • Sept. 27: Bellevue High School, 576 Love Hwy., noon-5:45 p.m. • Sept. 28: Capital Commons Center, 400 S. Models for the Cure

Cox family donation appreciated

Models for the Cure, Mid-Michigan’s 2nd Annual Cancer Survivor Fashion Show, took place at Lexington Hotel in Delta Township on Sept. 11. Among those attending, (l to r) Ginger Hayward of Eaton Rapids, and Lorraine Rood of Dimondale. TAMMY ALLEN/FOR LSJ MEDIA

Kind, talented, thoughtful and generous are just a few words that come to mind when thinking of William Cox. He was always faithful, coming in every Saturday to play the piano for years at Eaton County Medical Care Facility (ECMCF). The ECMCF would like to thank Mr. Cox, who thought so highly of the facility by all of his generosity over the years, by giving the facility a grand piano that’s in the Great Room, electric piano and a gazebo. The ECMCF also would like to thank Cox’s niece for presenting a generous donation on behalf of her uncle, William Cox. His niece granted Martha Richard, administrator at ECMCF, with a donation. The contribution will help build the facility’s future “Horticultural Greenhouse” that will be breaking ground in the fall of 2011. COURTESY PHOTO

Greyhound soccer defeats Charlotte, 4-1 Scott Yoshonis syoshonis@lsj.com

Eaton Rapids senior Shane Zimmer dribbles the ball for the last time on his home field to start the Greyhounds’ 4-1 win over Charlotte on Senior Night. Zimmer suffered a seasonand career-ending injury in the first game of the season. SCOTT YOSHONIS/LCN

EATON RAPIDS - Eaton Rapids improved to 8-6 overall and 2-1 in CAAC Gold boys’ soccer play with a somewhat deceiving 4-1 home win over Charlotte on Senior Night, Sept. 19. Deceiving because the game was much closer than the score would indicate, with two late Greyhound goals making a hard-fought, one-goal game look like a rout. Eaton Rapids head coach Matt Boersma said that his team struggled with an emotional Senior Night program, in which injured midfielder Shane Zimmer dribbled the ball on his home turf for the last time in a pre-arranged ceremonial kickoff. “We did okay,” Boersma said. “We had some good moments, but we struggled

with the emotions we had.” ER had the first clear scoring chance of the game on a corner kick, when a far-post header by Conner McCreery beat Charlotte keeper Jake Dornbos but was cleared off the line by defender Justin McConnell less than six minutes into the contest to keep it scoreless. The Oriole defense was caught off-guard on the first goal of the game, when a free kick at midfield by ER’s Sam Masteller sent Eric Freemire in clean on the Charlotte goal. His rightfooted shot banked off the post and in to make the score 1-0 with 21:18 left in the first half. Charlotte tied the game just under seven minutes into the second half, when Jake Brown threaded a perfect through ball to Dylan Bratchi, who calmly tucked the ball inside the left-hand

crashed against the crossbar. Charlotte continued to put pressure on the Eaton Rapids defense, keeping the Greyhounds on the back foot until they managed to score on a counterattack with 24:38 left in the game. Freemire won possession in front of his own bench, and found Bryce Richards at the top of the Charlotte box. Richards fought off two defenders and placed the ball past a helpless Dornbos from about 15 yards out to make the score 2-1. The Orioles came close Eaton Rapids junior to tying the game about five defender Logan Sheffield Eaton Rapids freshman minutes later, when Mikel heads the ball away from defender Kyle Chapman Duque made some space on danger during the looks to pass the ball during the left wing and sent the Greyhounds’ 4-1 win. the win on Sept. 19. ball hard across the face of the Greyhound goal, and goal post ti make the score minutes later, when a right- it was cleared by the ER 1-1. footed rocked from about 35 defense dangerously back Brown very nearly gave yards out beat Greyhound the Orioles the lead two keeper Jake Masteller, but See SOCCER, Page 13

across the goal mouth, but the crucial final touch did not come. Eaton Rapids freshman Chase Coss gave his team some breathing room with a fine individual effort, weaving through the Charlotte defense on the left wing, and then blasting a rocket just under the crossbar and inside the far post to make the score 3-1 with 15:13 left in the contest. Richards made the final score 4-1 with a 25-yard blast that scooted under Dornbos, with an assist by Freemire, with 1:19 left on the clock. “I don’t know what happened on that last one, probably skipped on him,” Charlotte head coach Ryan Sisco said, “but it was a close game. (We played) well, but not what we’re capable of yet. I think we got into playing a little too

Mason defeats Greyhound gridders, 45-0 Scott Yoshonis syoshonis@lsj.com

EATON RAPIDS - Eaton Rapids fell to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in the CAAC Gold football standings with a 45-0 loss to league leaders Mason on Sept. 16. Alex Fast completed five of his six passes for 88 yards in the game, and also had 20 yards on four carries on the ground for the Greyhounds.

Kanon McVicker led ER with 34 rushing yards in the game. Greyhound head coach Bob Ribby said that, while the score of the game was similar to the one in their previous contest, a 54-0 loss at Waverly, the play on the field was not. “They definitely played better,” Ribby said. “The effort was much better, we had some kids who played well and put some smacks on some kids.”

After letting what looked like a winnable game against Waverly go horribly wrong, Ribby said that his team bounced back and actually played well against a much better opponent in the Bulldogs. “Mason is obviously bigger and faster than us, but the effort was much better,” he said. “The outcome was the same, but as we move forward from here, we know that our competition will be much closer

to where we are.” The last five opponents on the Greyhounds schedule were a combined 4-16 after the fourth week of the season. Eaton Rapids will finish the CAAC Gold schedule this week with a home game against Charlotte on Friday, Sept. 30. The Greyhounds will hit the road to play Edsel Ford Dearborn on Oct. 7, come home to face Ionia on Oct. 14 and finish the at Owosso on Oct. 21.

direct at times.” Boersma said that the final score was somewhat flattering to his team. “I give Charlotte a lot of credit,” Boersma said. “I think they held the ball longer and had more dangerous opportunities, we were just fortunate to finish the ones we got. There was a long time when I was really nervous. We came in feeling that we were the stronger team, but they never stop working. We might have had a little bit more skill, but they made up for it with the work they put in.” The Greyhounds will finish up their league season with two CAAC Gold games this week, at Waverly on Monday, Sept. 26 and at home against Jackson Lumen Christi on Wednesday, Sept. 28. They will then finish off the regular season with a future league foe, Parma Jackson County Western, on Saturday, Oct. 1. Western will join the CAAC at the beginning of the 2012-13 school year.

OLIVET — Dustin Byrd, assistant professor of humanities at Olivet College, will present a lecture and discussion on events leading to the recent massacre in Norway Monday, Sept. 26 at 3 p.m. in the college’s Burrage Library Lecture Room. The event is free and open to the public. On July 22, 2011, rightwing extremist Anders Behring Breivik attacked the government sector of Oslo,

Norway with homemade bombs, resulting in eight deaths. Within hours of the explosions he arrived, disguised as a police officer, at a summer youth camp organized by the Norwegian Labour Party on Utoya island. He opened fire on the adolescent campers, reportedly killing 69 people, with the youngest victim being just 14-years-old. In his presentation, Byrd

will address questions such as: What drove Breivik to kill so many? What motivated his hatred for the Norwegian government, especially the Labour Party? What political and cultural beliefs inspired him to attack those he believed were responsible for “cultural Marxism” and “Islamification” of Scandinavia? Breivik penned a manifesto, titled “2083: A

European Declaration of Independence,” in which he laid out his claims against multiculturalism, political correctness, the political left and Muslims. Byrd will discuss the writings, as well as current trends within European and Western society that may have influenced Breivik before the massacre. For more information, call (269) 749-7141.
