DEWITT — The Panther boys golf team, last year’s Division 2 state champions, are off to a strong start, winning the first league jamboree April 19 at Charlotte Country Club. DeWitt finished with 165 strokes. Haslett was second (170);. DeWitt senior Alex Jones was the medalist, shooting a 36. Jones has signed a letter of intent to play for Eastern Michigan. Ryan Carey shot 40. Peter Von Spreecken shot 43 and Brendan Ward shot 45. The Panthers finished second at the Ranger Invitational hosted by Forest Hills Central at The Meadows of Grand Valley State University April 23. with one other player for the medalist title. Jones won the medalist playoff with a par on the first hole. DeWitt’s Davis DeKorte shot 80 and Tyler Polulak had an 81. The Panthers took top honors at the East Lansing Invitational at Walnut Hills Country Club, playing in a steady drizzle for four hours April 25. DeWitt finished with a 301. Haslett was second with a 313. Jones was medalist with a two under par 70, four shots ahead of runner up Chris Beltzer of Haslett. Jones had three birdies and just one bogie. Carey finished third overall with a 75 and Peter Von Spreecken was fourth with a round of 76. Davis DeKorte was 13th overall with an 80. “The boys are playing very well considering how early it is in the season and the fact that we have had a very cold and wet spring,” DeWitt coach Dave Koenigsknecht said. “I am very proud of these guys.”

Hengesbach 6-1, 6-2. In first singles, DeWitt’s Danielle Motz defaulted to Anastasia Duell. Alissa Sheedy lost second singles to Haley Keller 6-2, 6-1. Alyssa Duguay won third singles 6-1, 6-3 over Ionia’s Marie Hengesbach. Taylor Tagsold defeated Alicia Blevins 6-0, 6-1 in fourth singles.
