If it shimmers, shines, or sparkles, it can be found at PARK PLACE JEWELERS —in the glass display cases and on the faces of the team Jill, Sophia & Todd Ferrante behind the counters. When Todd Ferrante opened his first jewelry store on the Boardwalk in 1996, he wanted to offer both distinctive jewelry and top-of-the-line customer service. That philosophy continues today as he and his wife Jill operate two locations in Ocean City. As on-site owners, they are personally involved with their customers every day. Along with their highly-trained associates, the Ferrantes spend time getting to know their customers’ tastes in jewelry. The relationships they’ve built with their clientele bring many customers back year after year, often from miles away. As you browse through the stores you’ll find an impressive collection of unique and one-of-a-kind jewelry, ranging from classic to contemporary. “Our customers tell us that what makes us different from other jewelry stores is that we carry items they’ve never seen before,” says Todd. From solid gold to sterling silver, you’ll find exotic gemstones in every shape and color like watermelon tourmaline to tanzanite. Many watch lines to choose from including Movado, Citizen and Reactor Graviton II, the most advanced fishing tide watch available. Park Place Jewelers has it’s roots as a resort jewelry purveyor offering seaside stylings to locals and tourists alike, but over the years it has grown into the premier destination for nautical treasures from designers Denny Wong and Steven Douglas to diamond engagement rings by Tacori, Simon G and Coast Diamond and everything in between. Park Place Jewelers is your exclusive dealer of the hottest trend in jewelry today, Alex and Ani bracelets. Alex and Ani believes in the power of positive energy. Their beautiful handmade bangle bracelets are infused with the power of positive energy and are intended to empower the wearer and reflect the unique qualities of the individual. Want an OC bead for your Pandora® bracelet? Park Place Jewelers has an extensive collection of Pandora® OC beads for capturing those Ocean City memories. Their Original OC Hook® bracelet which began as a single bracelet has evolved into a phenomenal collection, which now includes rings, earrings, pendants and more available in sterling silver and solid gold. Want to take a piece of OC home with you? Check out their OC Destination® Collection featuring genuine OC sand encased in glass beads. Shop their two locations on the Boardwalk between 2nd and 3rd Streets under the Park Place Hotel and also in the White Marlin Mall in West Ocean City, next to Bed Bath & Beyond. Visit them online at ParkPlaceJewelers.com and on Facebook at Park Place Jewelers Ocean City.

A COMPELLING AMERICAN STORY Few family-owned food and restaurant companies have been over 100 years and achieved the levels of success of Phillips Seafood. The Phillips family has a unique story to tell about how they grew their company and increased the popularity of Maryland-style seafood across the United States. From their humble beginnings on the Chesapeake Bay, to the opening of their ďŹ rst restaurant in 1956, to their overseas expansion into sourcing high-quality crab meat, the Phillips family has become a powerful force on the global seafood market. Today, 100 years later, that ďŹ rst A.E. Phillips seafood facility has evolved to encompass eight company-owned full-service restaurants, over a dozen franchise units, seafood processing plants across Southeast Asia and a full manufacturing division that supplies to tens of thousands of foodservice and retail customers each year. The following pages give you and overview of Phillips Foods and Seafood Restaurants, a multi-generational success story.

23

HUMBLE BEGINNINGS The story of Phillips Seafood is an intriguing American tale of humble beginnings, hard work and the courage to take risks to achieve one’s vision. Brice and Shirley Phillips grew up on Hoopers Island, a small community off Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay where most residents worked on the water. In their early married life, they managed Brice’s father’s seafood packing plant, which sourced wild crabs, fish and oysters in season. In those early days, the fresh seafood traveled by steamship to Baltimore, where it was bound for local restaurants and fishmongers.

Faced with surplus crabs one season, Brice and Shirley decided to open a simple “crab shack” in Ocean City, MD with a $2000 loan from their families. What began as a one-room carryout in 1956 grew dining room by dining room over the years until it finally seated 1400 guests. Business grew quickly from there, as the family expanded into new locations and markets.

From the very beginning, the Phillips family has focused on bringing the culinary traditions and welcoming hospitality of the Eastern Shore to their guests. They know there is no replicating authenticity. That’s why many of their recipes are generations old, passed to their chefs straight from the kitchen of Shirley Phillips.

A FAMILY AFFAIR Generations Working Side By Side After 100 years, Phillips Seafood remains family-owned and family-operated. Just as Brice and Shirley passed down their dedication to their business to sons Steve and Jeff, so has the third generation become an integral part of the company’s future, fulfilling a wide variety of roles at Phillips. Yet there is another “Phillips Family” that Brice and Shirley always spoke of: their loyal family of employees. In a industry with a high rate of turnover, Phillips has been lucky to hold on to many of those who have contributed to the company’s success over the years. Phillips’ family-style management and promote-fromwithin policy have resulted in many employees who have 30 or more years of service with Phillips Seafood.

health & wellness in O.C.

reathe in the fresh salt-tinged air to your heart’s content and bask in warm vitamin-D laced sunshine while taking an invigorating walk in soothing sand with lapping waves over your sore feet.

Vitamin D research is all the craze. Some doc’s swear we don’t get enough and a key source is, you guessed it, the sun! When the sun’s UV-B rays touch the skin, our bodies naturally make Vitamin D. Experts say 10-15 minutes of mid-day sun (it has to be high enough to penetrate the atmosphere) is actually good for you. But moderation comes into play here. Skin cancer is nothing to play around with so don’t stretch that 15 minutes into a 1 hour siesta in the full sun. Be careful to cover up and use sun tan lotion. A good broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least 15 SPF should be applied liberally at least 20 minutes before exposure. When walking the Boardwalk or one of the myriad of walking trails along the shorelines, here are a few simple pointers to keep you without sprains and strains during your vacation. First, wear something more supportive than flip flops! At Boardwalk Segways, they believe everyone should be able to create a new Ocean City memory on the boardwalk. Mobility scooters are a fun and easy way to travel the whole 37 blocks that make up the boardwalk without getting yourself exhausted. They are suitable for most ages and skill levels and are an eco-friendly way to travel and tour. 34 34

||OCEAN OCEANCITY CITY2014 2015

For those with mobility challenges, Boardwalk Segways also offers wheelchairs and power-scooter rentals, as well as strollers for touring the attractions accessible from the boardwalk. New to the line-up, Boardwalk Segways now offers beach wheelchairs, so everyone can have the full Ocean City experience! But when you do suffer from an unexpected injury or illness, West Ocean City Injury & Illness Center invites you to come and receive immediate treatment so you can get back to the beach or your daily routine. They treat illnesses such as sore throat, flu, coughs, earaches, pneumonia, allergies, asthma attacks, abscesses and injuries such as sprains, strains, lacerations, animal bites, back pain and many other medical concerns West Ocean City Injury & Illness Center strives to keep your wait time to a minimum. Patients can often be treated in less than 30 minutes. With their in-house lab for rapid testing, X ray, and orthopedic supplies, their highly skilled physicians and physician’s assistants are available to provide quality care year-round. Staffed by Emergency Medicine Board Certified Physician, Joseph Crisanti MD, and Cynthia Randolph, PA-C, West Ocean City Injury & Illness Center aims to provide the utmost quality of care. Dr. Joseph Crisanti attended Medical College of Pennsylvania and did his Residency at University of Maryland Medical Center. He has worked in Emergency Medicine, Urgent Care, Primary Care as well as Internal

Medicine. He has been in practice for over 19 years. Cynthia Randolph, Physician Assistant, attended Emory University School of Medicine. She brings experiences from Internal Medicine, Primary Care as well as Urgent Care. She has been a Physician Assistant for over 17 years. West Ocean City Injury & Illness Center does not replace the emergency room for life-threatening emergencies. Instead, this facility is a quality resource for unexpected non-life-threatening medical problems. For life-threatening illnesses and injuries, including chest pain, significant shortness of breath, severe head injuries, and severe lacerations it is recommended that patients proceed directly to an emergency room or call 911. As members of the community with families of our own, Dr. Crisanti and Cynthia Randolph, PA-C understand that it is often difficult to find a doctor or to schedule an appointment for an immediate, non-life threatening medical problem or injury. That is why West Ocean City Injury & Illness Center is committed to responding to this community-wide need by providing an array of medical services to make quality care more accessible So get out and experience Ocean City while staying fit and create a vacation to remember, but most importantly....be safe & just Relax!

Ocean City’s

World-Famous Boardwalk Delights All Ages!

O

cean City’s Landmark Boardwalk is a three-mile promenade by the sea whose timeless appeal has been attracting vacationers for generations. A traditional wooden walkway, bordered on the east by Ocean City’s beautiful beach, offers spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean. To the west, miles of unique eateries, one-of-a-kind shops and amusements and accommodations in which family members of all ages will enjoy. As you approach the southern end of the boardwalk, the smells of caramel popcorn and cotton candy will awaken your senses as you notice enjoy an exciting line-up of amusement rides, games and arcades. From the antique carousel to a thrilling roller coaster ride, the attractions beckon all ages. For those looking to enjoy a spectacular view of the island, try the Ferris wheel on the pier, then test your skills at the many games found along both the southern end of the Boardwalk and pier.

| OCEAN CITY 2015

During your stroll down the Boardwalk you will enjoy a kaleidoscope of colors and sounds as street performers entertain the public and kites of all shapes and sizes soar overhead. Free concerts occupy the beach on North Division Street, just steps from the Boardwalk, every Wednesday evening during July

and August. At the Boardwalk’s northern end at 27th Street, free movies and the Family Beach Olympics are held on the beach on selected evenings during the summer. Ocean City residents and visitors are not the only ones who think Ocean City is the best place in the world to be, as the Ocean City Boardwalk has drawn numerous accolades over the years. Sherman’s Travel named it one of the “10 Best U.S. Boardwalks” in 2010. Reader’s Digest named it “One of America’s “Best Seaside Strolls” in 2006. USA Today ranked Ocean City “One of the 10 Great Places to have Fun on the Boardwalk.” The Travel Channel noted it as “One of the “Best Boardwalks in America,” and just last year Tripadvisor Travelers’ Choice ranked Ocean City’s Boardwalk one of the “Top 10 Amusement Parks and Boardwalk in the U.S.” If you are looking for another way to experience the sights and sounds of Ocean City’s Boardwalk, hop aboard the Boardwalk tram. The tram operates from the Inlet to 27th Street, a distance of almost three miles. The Ocean City Boardwalk is certainly an experience that we hope all of our visitors enjoy!

Bad Monkey is Open! Open Air Feel...Open Early, Open Late! Business partners John Fager, owner of Fager’s Island, and Kevin Myers, general manager of Fager’s Island, opened Bad Monkey on 58th Street and Coastal Highway early this spring. The brightly colored Bad Monkey features a sub shop with counter service for indoor and outdoor seating as well as carry-out on the first floor and a craft burger bar with table service on the second floor deck. “The idea was to have two different styles. If you want to come and get waited on, come upstairs, but downstairs you can get carryout and take subs to the beach,” Myers said. Upstairs there are “over 40” craft beers on tap along with a variety of canned craft brews representing several different states but mainly focused on Maryland and Delmarva. Keeping it as local and fresh as possible, Bad Monkey is purchasing its beef for its craft burgers from an organic cattle farm located in Monkton, Md. where the cattle are grass fed and is a dry-aged, all-natural, antibiotic free and hormone free product. Currently, Bad Monkey’s menu offers a create your own style burger or guests can select from specialty burgers, such as the Hell Burger made with jalapenos, pickled red onions, pepper jack cheese and guacamole or the Jersey Shore burger made with prosciutto, fried egg, mozzarella, tomato and basil. Also available upstairs starting at 9 a.m. is Bad Monkey’s breakfast menu that includes omelets and eggs any style made with organic eggs as well as homemade French toast and pancakes. “We wanted to do breakfast from the beginning,” Myers said. “When you are on vacation it is a great favorite meal to go out for and what a great environment, sitting up here in the breeze outside watching Ocean City go by.” The sub shop’s menu offers a variety of fresh made salads and subs, burgers, fish tacos and crab cakes. The specialty item shared among breakfast, burgers and subs is Bad Monkey’s homemade bread, which is baked fresh everyday in house. Myers pointed out a few of the building’s special characteristics, including a mirror behind the bar on the second floor that was located at a downtown Ocean City soda fountain landmark over 100 years ago and mounted on the walls are fish made out of drift wood crafted in Costa Rica. The concept behind Bad Monkey was to create a fun open air, outside environment with its own vibe, “Myers explained”. 56

O.C./Del. Surfing Surf lessons available for all ages

Sunset photo by Matt Landon

Always searching for the perfect wave

Surfing is defined as “the art of riding waves” So many people visit our shores and know just how wonderful the Atlantic Ocean is. It’s no secret! In fact, the local beaches have won a number of awards over the years for being some of the cleanest and most pristine. Everyone knows there are waves out there, but many overlook how good the waves can be here on the Delmarva Peninsula. What you may not believe is that the waves can actually be world class. The catch is, it doesn’t happen as often as some other places around the world that are known for great wave riding sports. Pictured on this page are waves that show just how perfect it can get. Being a wave rider here on Delmarva is actually ideal if you accept and understand the down times of what surfers call “flat periods” or “flat spells”. The area has actually produced two world renown wave riders in Jay Reale and Brian Stoehr. Both became two of the most famous bodyboarders in the world and they both 62

| OCEAN CITY 2014 2015

began right here in the waters off Delmarva. A lot of people have asked each of them how it is possible to accomplish such a feat coming from a place that has great waves, but not great waves all the time. The answer from both is pretty simple: “if you can learn to do some of the advance maneuvers the rest of the world’s best riders are doing in really small waves, it actually gets easier as the waves get bigger and better.” In addition, those “down times” or smaller wave periods are ideal for all those beginner and intermediate riders learning the sport. Just like most other things in life, surfing is a sport in which you really need to “walk before you can run”. “You have to learn the RIGHT way. If you learn the RIGHT way, it can be amazingly easy.” says Brian Stoehr. That means a few things in learning to ride waves, but one of those is the fact that

you need to start out in smaller surf before you are ready for the larger, heavier and stronger waves that we do in fact get right off of our shores. What this means for so many is that you are vacationing in a PERFECT place to learn how to surf. Since the area is such a great place to get started, why not get out there and take a lesson. Surfing and all types of wave riding lessons are great because they can shave YEARS of trial and error off of the learning curve. If done correctly, it is really a fun sport and surprisingly easy! So what are you waiting for? Take advantage of visiting one of the best places on the East Coast to start your wave riding dreams. It is just one small step away from being crossed off your bucket list.

85 Years of Life Saving in Ocean City

66

| OCEAN CITY 2014

by Kristin Joson / Ocean City Beach Patrol

Throughout its 85 year history, the Ocean City Beach Patrol has operated from numerous locations. Most of the buildings that have housed the Beach Patrol had already reached the end of their useful life for other agencies, and were turned over to the Patrol until the city needed the space for something else, like a police substation, a museum, or the expansion of the Convention Center. All of that will change in the summer of 2015 when the Beach Patrol will move into the first facility that was built specifically to serve as their headquarters.

When Ocean City got its start as a collection of fishing shacks in the 1800’s, few people had the leisure time to travel to a resort for bathing in the ocean. As the town grew into more of a resort, Ocean City, like other Atlantic Coast towns began to staff a shelter on the beach as part of the United States Lifesaving Service. The Lifesaving Service later became the United States Coast Guard, and the “shelter,” at what is now Caroline Street was replaced by a substantial building in order to house the Coast Guardsmen.

The building was equipped with bathing and sleeping quarters, a kitchen, an eating area, offices, and a boat room. As the swimming population began to spread past the view from the Coast Guard building, the Town hired Edward Lee Carey to watch over the most populated section of beach in 1930. Before the season was over, they added six more men to watch over the swimmers, and the Ocean City Beach Patrol was born. The Coast Guard used the building until 1964 when they abandoned the station for a newly constructed station located near the Ocean City Inlet.

The building fell into a state of disrepair and was used by the city for various government departments including, as the Beach Patrol Headquarters and barracks. In 1977, the building was scheduled for demolition, but a group of concerned citizens formed the Ocean City Museum Society and with the generosity of the Mayor and City Council who made funds available to the society, the building was saved by moving it to its present location at the end of the boardwalk overlooking the Inlet. It is now home to the Ocean City Life Saving Station Museum. The Beach Patrol, which had previously operated out of the Coast Guard building, was moved to a location above the public restrooms at Worcester Street and the boardwalk in the early 1970’s. After the Ocean City Police Department moved to the new Public Safety Building in the early 1990’s, the Beach Patrol office was moved from their boardwalk location to the former Police headquarters and District Court building on Dorchester Street. Then, in the fall of 2013 the Mayor and City Council voted, unanimously, to support and finance the construction of a new Beach Patrol headquarters. The Ocean City Development Corporation helped fund the project. The ground-breaking took place on September 15, 2014 and construction began as soon as those in attendance left the lot on Talbot Street. The Beach Patrol is looking forward to this newest chapter in its proud history when operations move to the new facility during the 2015 season. This is a very exciting time for the members of the Patrol and the entire Ocean City community. The building will be a fitting landmark as people enter the downtown area and will serve as an enhancement to the neighborhood for many years to come. | OCEAN CITY 2014 67

id you know that the Ocean City and Delaware Beaches Golf region—from Lewes to Ocean City—boasts over 20 clubs? And that most of those are rated 4-5 stars by Golf Digest? No handicaps here! The GlenRiddle courses have a history all their own and not all about golf. The two courses, Man O’War and War Admiral are named after the winning race horses housed in the stable that is now the club house for the club. “Man O’War is a public course and is in the links style like you’d see over in the British Isles,” said club Golf Professional, Rob McDonald. “The War Admiral course is parkland-style, designed by Joel Weiman in collaboration with design consultant and 68

cean City has a long-standing reputation for great dining destinations. Many of the main stay restaurants that are a favorite among locals and visitors alike have served the community for many decades now.

en, slow roasted prime rib & a great kids menu! In addition to their full service operational restaurant, J/R’s offers fully cooked freezer packed BBQ baby back ribs & spiral cut honey glazed baked hams.

JR’s is proud to be celebrating 34 years in Ocean City, Maryland. In the summer of 1980, Jack and his partner decided to open a specialty restaurant, featuring barbequed ribs in Ocean City, Maryland. Ribs were a brand new food item, so before they could present them to the public, the partners traveled to Texas, to Florida, and to Virginia to put together J/R’s now famous barbeque sauce.

New in town from a long standing reputation of providing quality Asian Buffets like the Tokyo Steak House and the Chinatown Buffet in both Salisbury and Rehoboth/Lewes, restaurateur; Jie Ling has taken over the 131st Street JR’s Ribs and converted it to the Largest Seafood Buffet in Ocean City! Mr. Ling says there will be a Hibachi Chef who will customize your Hot Asian culinary combos in addition to the huge variety of cooked, fried & raw seafood choices. He also will offer a full sushi buffet to choose your favorites from as well. This latest addition to the O.C. Dining scene plans to make waves of great reviews!

Jack decided it was time for semi - retirement and turned the reins over at the 62nd street location to long time employee Jerry Sinnott. Jerry had been a part of the JR’s management team since 1989. The Sinnotts were entrusted with all the great recipes and secrets for the best ribs in town. Since then, Jack has decided to come back from Florida & out of retirement. You will find that little has changed since his original days, still quality food, great service and a fun family atmosphere. JR’S doesn’t just stop at ribs: they have excellent seafood and O.C’s best all lump crab cakes, succulent steaks, BBQ chick78

BJ’s on the Water has been a year round Ocean City tradition since 1979. BJ’s entire lunch and dinner menu is offered every day from 11am til 1:30am featuring crab cakes, sizzling steaks and world famous seafood skins. Bay front dining at its best, live entertainment and never a cover charge. Madlyn and Billy Carder have owned and operated BJ’s on the Water Restau-

rant for over 35 years. The Carder’s strive to maintain their standard of quality and have succeeded in earning a loyal following in Ocean City. Proud to be an integral part of the beach experience, the Carders have humbly given back to the community for many years. Award-winning recognition, happy customers, and a loyal local following are all indicators of the rich history at BJ’s on the Water. Recently inducted into the Maryland Restaurant Hall of Fame, the Carders are a true O.C. institution. Peaky’s Rooftop Restaurant & Bar is a fun casual family restaurant high atop a local landmark, the Fenwick Inn Hotel, on the penthouse 8th floor. Peaky’s is locally owned and operated and this is our second location. Owner Justin Schaub has 17 years in the restaurant industry working for one of the areas most successful restaurateurs and then purchasing his first location in Princess Anne, MD in 2007. Justin took that concept to Ocean City in 2013 and modified it to fit into the Ocean City Resort Market. Fager’s Island Restaurant and Bar is another award-winning waterfront Ocean City landmark, known for their famous views of the sun setting over the bay with the rousing melody of Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture drifting over the deck. After the sun sets, Fager’s really comes to life

with live bands, deck parties, and special events. Fager’s Island is a popular destination featuring impeccably prepared American and Pacific Rim cuisine. Also enjoy their outdoor decks and bar with live entertainment and 32 wines by the glass. It is a place where the joy of food & the presence of the table are of utmost importance. At Fager’s Island, the food is delicious, the drink specials are hot, and the dance floor is always full. Blue fish is owned by the same family who owns Hunan Palace in Salisbury. Looking for a way to break into the Ocean City market very close to home, Blue Fish seemed like a great addition. It is now the only place in town for sit down Chinese, Thai, and Japanese foods including Sushi. This is a very beautiful restaurant that sits on the corner of Ocean Gateway and 94th street near the Super Fresh. It is an unlikely looking spot, but once inside you are transported to an elegant Asian experience. The cuisine at Blue Fish is like artwork and their sushi presents itself on the plate more like a Monet than an entrée. That’s just the way it is there. The chefs are focused and pay meticulously close attention to details. For a moderately priced menu, it feels more like a feast from another continent. Some of the chef ’s specialties include General Tso’s Twin Delight which is a crispy jumbo shrimp & scallops sautéed with pep-

per and onion in the chef ’s special sauce. The next specialty is the Triple Delight which is shrimp, beef & chicken sautéed with broccoli, snow peas, bamboo shoots in brown sauce. Blue Fish serves both lunch starting at 12:00 and dinner. They boast of a full service bar with wine and liquor. There are lots of places to go in beach attire, but Blue Fish customers wishing to dine in would be comfortable in casual wear. However, if you’re just coming off of the beach, call ahead because they do a great little take out. There are no reservations required. Nick’s Original House of Ribs has served up “incredibly good food” to Ocean City’s hungry diners for over three decades. An iconic landmark near the Delaware line, this quintessentially Ocean City restaurant continues to thrive, serving up American fare with great, consistent food and service. Nick’s is synonymous with their baby back ribs, but they are also famous for their jumbo lump crab cakes, prime rib, barbecued shrimp, and Nick’s fabulous onion loaf. The onion loaf is a dish with a following almost as loyal as the restaurant’s. The Onion Loaf appetizer is a decadent block of frazzled onions that is meant to be shared with friends, serving

2-3 people. Nick’s sports bar, with plenty of TV’s to keep up with your favorite sports, is the perfect place to gather with friends and the spacious dining room is a great venue for bringing the whole family together. Their hearty meals are complemented by a full bar, serving up a range of wines, beers, and cocktails. With a casual, relaxed atmosphere, Nick’s Original House of Ribs has something everyone will enjoy. The newly expanded Skye Bar, opened early last year and is truly a gem on the Ocean City skyline. It is a must during your stay to check out the newest scene at the beach. Enjoy breathtaking views of the city, the bay and the ocean while sipping a Saturn Squeeze or Big Bang made with grapefruit and oranges squeezed right before your eyes. The Skye Bar is open for lunch, happy hour, dinner and late night. Come in off the beach for happy hour drink specials and enjoy amazing acoustic acts or join us for a casual dinner or late evening drinks and appetizers. In the past few decades, many things have changed in Ocean City. New businesses have come and gone. ongboard Café, located in the fabulous new Town Center mid-town boardwalk at 67th St, opened early last summer, to rave reviews for food, ambience, cocktails and service. What makes this surf-themed bistro stand out is its unique & diverse menu that appeals equally to the casual diner as well as sophisticated palate. For lunch and lite fare you can choose from gourmet burgers, real Baja-style tacos, innovative sandwiches & paninis or entréesized salads. Dinner selections include local fresh fish prepared in a variety of styles and offerings such as Tournedos of Beef with bacon brandy cream sauce, fresh seafood pasta, Ahi Nachos and a southwest style Scallop & Lobster appetizer, to name just a few. “Every item on our menu is about preparation and flavor” says owner Rick Vach. “We make everything from scratch and that is reflected in the quality and popularity of our food. All of our sauces, salsas, dressings, etc. are meticulously house-made. We hand-patty our burgers from a blend of chuck, brisket and short-rib. We buy fish from local sources daily and our bread is fresh-baked from a local bakery. From there, we created a menu that isn’t the typical resort-style food. We have things you will only find here, such as our authentic Fish Tacos, our Elegant Turkey Panini and our St. Croix Chopped Salad. Our menu even has a selection of veggie items that features our famous Wrinkled Green Beans ( ash-fried and tossed in a secret sweet-soy sauce) and Mexican Street Corn (grilled and rolled in chipotle aioli and cotija cheese). Our chef makes fabulous risottos, our Grilled Lamb Lollypops are topped with an amazing sweet-cilantro pesto, and we are o en told we make the best Cream Of Crab soup anywhere”. One of America’s Coolest Small Towns

erlin’s citizens—and fans from around the U.S. and beyond—helped get the town nominated in the Fall of 2013 when Budget Travel solicited suggestions from tens of thousands of online readers. The editors tallied up the nominations, added a dash of editorial discretion for regional and cultural diversity, and came up with a list of 15 finalists— cool burghs from Upstate New York to the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California, from northern Colorado to the Everglades, and, of course, the Maryland shore. After more than a month of online voting, Berlin, MD (population 4,563), earned the title of “Coolest Small Town in America!” Truly a treat away from the beach is a small, quaint, vibrant, Victorian-influenced town just minutes from the Ocean City boardwalk. Take a little time to get away and enjoy Berlin, Maryland. The small part makes Berlin easy to navigate and walk around. The quaint part comes from over 40 buildings noted in the National Register of Historic Homes. The vibrancy is due to the lively arts and entertainment district that continues to develop along the tree-lined streets. And Victorian architecture makes for a beautiful setting. Berlin (historically pronounced BURL-un) was a crossroads of the Shore and entertained business folks, hunters and, of course, those on the way to the small area called Ocean City. Past prosperity is evident in the well-cared for homes and businesses throughout the area. Recently, local business leaders have revitalized the town with a State-designated Arts & Entertainment District where music, art, and crafts are a vital part of the community. Pocomoke City: Maryland’s Friendliest Town on the Eastern Shore

‘Living Museum,’ a Charming Downtown, and Cypress Swamp Adventures Make Pocomoke Worth Discovering

Waving a welcome to visitors and residents, a huge American flag flutters high above this charming lower Eastern Shore town. And lately, there’s enough going on—a new discovery center, a refurbished theater and a river tour boat. There’s more than ever here to delight families and travelers of all ages. The Place to Start: The Delmarva Discovery Center The newest addition to Pocomoke, dubbed “the friendliest town on the Eastern Shore,” is the Delmarva Discovery Center. This living museum has a prime spot just a few feet away from the Pocomoke River and the town’s pictureperfect drawbridge. Stow your car here and spend the day exploring Pocomoke by foot. Inside the center, you’re far more than a spectator. Go ahead and touch, listen, experiment, and explore. It’s a hands-on experience that offers a fun and fasci96 96

nating look at the Pocomoke River, its history, ecology, and role in the lives of folks in this region for the past 300 years. Explore a Native American exhibit, a beaver dam big enough for the kids to climb into, an underwater world in the 6,000 gallon aquarium, climb aboard a re-creation of a steamboat, feel what it’s like to tong for oysters or hoist full-size sails in a gale-force wind. It’s truly an adventure in learning. Nature and Recreation Stroll the town docks for views of sailboats and powerboats. A stone’s throw from the bridge is Cypress Park with picnic tables, a playground and tennis courts. Stretch your legs on the fourmile nature trail that meanders through swamp and woods along the river’s edge. Boaters can tie up at the Pocomoke town docks for free the first two days (just call or stop by city hall at 410-9571333, 101 Clarke Street). Golfers can head to Winter Quarters Municipal Golf Course, a nine-hole, par 70 course on the banks of the Pocomoke, close to downtown.

Downtown History and Culture Originally settled in the 1600s, the town has several homes on the National Register. Take a tour of the stately Costen House and Rose Garden, home to the town’s first mayor. A few blocks away, the Sturgis One Room School Museum offers a different perspective on history. Built more than a century ago, the school served African-American students in grades one through seven until 1937. One of the newest jewels downtown is the Mar-Va Theater, an Art Deco beauty from 1927 that was renovated and reopened in 2008. The Mar-Va now offers movies for $5, theatrical productions, concerts, and more. Visit mar-vatheater. org for current programs and performances. Afterward relax on the outside deck of some great riverside dining. For more information about Pocomoke City, go to www.downtownpocomoke.com.

Welcome to the Delaware Beaches

Catch Rays

T

he Delaware beaches are a very popular destination for vacationers during the summer months. With over 25 miles of coastline, there are plenty of pristine, clean and award winning beaches for everyone to enjoy. Fenwick Island and Bethany Beach both offer a relaxing getaway from the normal hustle and bustle. With easy access to the bay and the ocean, many visitors emjoy an abundant variety of outdoor activities available in and near the water. Kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, wind surfing, and swimming, all take advantage of the natural beauty of the area. You can find runners, hikers, and cyclists taking advantage of our flat and friendly terrain in the state parks and beyond. In addition to outdoor activities, many visitors also travel to the Delaware coast for tax-free shopping, beautiful boardwalks and unique dining that you just can’t find anywhere else. The coast of Delaware is known for beautiful beaches, but many travelers visit to learn about the rich heritage that dates back to pre-colonial times. The Indian River Life Saving Station, built in 1876, was constructed to assist ships in need along the coastlines of the United States and is now home to a museum, gift shop and event venue. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is open to the public for tours. On Coastal Highway from Fenwick Island to Bethany Beach, you may see the large concrete towers along the coastline. In the early 1940’s the United States military set up Fort Miles at the mouth of the Delaware Bay to protect the city of Phila-

delphia during WWII. The fort took over 1,500 acres of land. Of the eleven towers constructed, eight were located in Delaware. From the top of the towers, “spotters” could scan approximately 14 miles out to sea in search of enemy vessels and direct the firing of guns mounted along the coastline. Fenwick Island Fenwick Island boasts a beautiful, wide coastline and small beach town atmosphere that attracts thousands each year. Fenwick Island is home to one of only a handful of lighthouses located in Sussex County. You’ll find bayside on 146th St., a section of roadway that coincidentally serves as the state line dividing Maryland and Delaware. The lighthouse is now a museum and is being maintained by the New Friends of the Fenwick Island Lighthouse. The Discover Sea Shipwreck Museum, located on the second floor of Sea Shell City (one of Fenwick Island’s original shops) on Coastal Hwy, is another mustsee attraction. The museum was founded with the goal of recovering and preserving our maritime heritage. The museum opened in 1995 and is one of the largest of its kind in the Mid-Atlantic. Spa……hhh!

T

here isn’t much that is as relaxing as a day at the beach, but sometimes you need a vacation from your vacation… The beaches of the Delaware coast offer much more in the way of attractions than just sand and sun. Spas provide a place for rest, relaxation, and a chance to destress. Vacations are the perfect time to make time to nurture your body and soul with some much needed self care. Whether you are looking for a rejuvenating massage, a soothing facial, a detoxifying body treatment or an indulgent manicure and pedicure you will be sure to find what you need on the spa menu. Nearly all spas have custom day spa packages so consider devoting several hours to some much needed pampering. One of the most popular spa services is Therapeutic Massage. Massage not only feels incredible – it’s good for you too! Massage helps reduce stress and alleviate muscle tension. There are so many different kinds of massages to choose from! When in doubt, a basic Swedish relaxation massage is a good choice for anyone who has never experienced massage therapy. Massage aficionados may prefer a deep tissue massage to work out specific areas of muscle tension or a reflexology treatment which can address problem areas in the entire body from working out corresponding points on the feet. A Deep Tissue massage is a great

106

| DELAWARE BEACH 2015

way to work out those sore muscles after a day’s golf outing. Couples massage has become a very popular spa service. It allows you to share the pampering experience of a relaxation massage with that someone special. Oceanova Spa offers facials, body, and nail treatments so your body is beautiful from the inside out. Only the finest products and highest quality services are offered in an atmosphere of peace and comfort, so you can take a moment to unwind for yourself. Their signature facials use a variety of techniques, from light therapy to hungarian herbal mud, to bring out the best in your skin. Relaxing therapeutic massage treatments range from the traditional swedish and deep tissue massage to hot stone and reflexology. Couples can enjoy the experience together in the spacious couples room, the perfect place to be pampered. Facials are a wonderful spa service designed to keep you looking your best. They offer a non-invasive anti-aging treatment opportunity for those who are looking for a more natural way to combat premature aging. Facials can be customized to address a variety of skin care concerns including acne, fine lines and wrinkles, hyper pigmentation, and rosacea just to name a few. Facials are divinely relaxing and a great way to keep your skin looking fantastic. Microdermabrasian and LED Light Therapy are some additional anti-aging skin care services that many spas offer. Body treatments are skin care services

that provide rejuvenation from head to toe. Detoxifying body wraps and exfoliating body scrubs will leave your whole body amazingly soft, smooth, and energized. Although fun in the sun is part of any great beach vacation, too much sun can lead to premature aging and major health concerns. Spray tanning has become a popular alternative with health conscious spa goers. Spray tan services can help you achieve a healthy beach glow without submitting yourself to the sun’s damaging rays. Spa manicures and Pedicures are an experience in indulgence with special pampering for hands and feet. Inspired by plant-based healing traditions from around the world, All About U Salon and Spa subscribes to Aveda’s spa and skin care philosophy, Elemental NatureSM , which is grounded in the Ayurvedic belief that everything in the universe is composed of five elements: Infinity, Air, Fire, Water and Earth. When environmental and emotional factors such as lifesyle, diet or stress cause these elements to shift out of balance, the opportunity to bring balance and inner and outer well-being can be placed in the hands of the professional. A trip to the spa may be just what you are looking for on your next visit to thebeach. With so much to offer, Delaware coast day spas provide the perfect beach escape and may prove to be the highlight of your next beach vacation.

Delaware’s Quiet Resorts…

Communities Honor Wounded Soldiers and their Families By Annette Reeping As far back as the days of early settlers, Delaware’s beaches provided a “haven of rest.” Then, as now, families come to the beach for its beauty, tranquility, ocean waves and to take advantage of all the area offers. The heritage of the Quiet Resorts provided the inspiration for a grass-roots endeavor called “Operations SEAs the Day,” which offers wounded soldiers and their families time to bond at the beach. The warrior families are referred to as Very Important Families (VIFs). For injured warriors and their families and caregivers, Bethany Beach is the perfect setting to relax and enjoy time together easing their transition back into civilian life. The program, now in its third year, takes place during Warrior Week which begins the day after Labor Day. This year’s event is September 8-13. At the heart of the program is the desire to honor wounded veterans, their families and caregivers. The mission of Operation SEAs the Day (OSTD) is “To organize and facilitate a beach week event for wounded soldiers and their families as a means of showing appreciation for their service and sacrifice. It is our hope that such a community based gesture of support will be comforting and help ease their transition back into civilian life”. OSTD volunteer staff works with military service organizations to obtain VIF referrals. How does it work? Local businesses donate goods, food, and activities to the warrior families. Local host families volunteer to assist the VIFs when they arrive, and help them navigate the area to take advantage of the many activities available during the week. Contributing to its unparalleled success is the generosity of grateful people. In 2013, Sea Colony, a private community of 2200 homes that borders Bethany Beach, asked owners

114

| OCEAN CITY 2014

to donate their homes to wounded veterans. The positive response exceeded expectations. Today, surrounding Bethany Beach area owners join Sea Colony in providing homes to wounded warrior families. Sea Colony also makes its beach, fitness centers, tennis center and other amenities available to the warrior families. Along with the Bethany Beach Farmers’ Market and Bethany Beach Books, Operation SEAs the Day merchandise is sold at the Sea Colony Beach Shoppe at the Marketplace. The local community and seasonal population actively engages to show patriots and their families their appreciation through personal communications, volunteering, participating in a Hero’s Welcome Parade, creating Quilts of Valor, making monetary donations, baking wonderful treats, offering complimentary meals from local restaurants and providing “on the house” events for the families during their visit. Operation SEAs the Day, which became a 501(c) (3) public charity in 2014, has a 100% volunteer staff, who along with its many supporters, hope to set an example which other towns will duplicate throughout the United States. Is the event worthwhile? Among the many notes of appreciation sent from warrior families said, “I wanted to take a moment to express our profound thanks and deepest gratitude….for such a meaningful and life changing experience. Thank you for your honor and actions. Thank you for opening your hearts, homes, and lives to us and for showing us what it is that we have so willingly sacrificed for…. Finally, thank you for providing significant attention to the families of the veterans.” For more information, go to the Operation SEAs the Day web site: www.OperationSEAstheDay.org.

The Little Library That Could By Susanne Keefe & Claudia Thayne

From a stop on a bookmobile route, to a trailer; then permanent building in 1994, and a major renovation in 2009, the South Coastal Library and Cultural Center continues to be a vital part of the Bethany Beach and Sussex County landscape. With a larger Meeting Room, Children’s Area, Teen Central, adult collection areas and an outdoor atrium that is inspiring, the library has so much to offer. A library card is all it takes to borrow books, audios, videos, magazines, book club kits and other materials. Internet and access to library computers, e-services including e-books, e-audiobooks, and streaming video loans also are available. Databases, electronic services, online classes, access to every public library in Delaware, and so much more are at your fingertips with one library card! Free cards are available to Delaware residents or property owners. Non-residents may purchase a card with a photo ID by the month for $10 or annually for $25. Check the South Coastal Library website for complete details at http://southcoastal.lib.de.us/south-coastal-library/. One of the largest events at the library is the Summer Reading Program. All ages are welcome, and each has its own event. Registration and participation starts June 1. How can one building provide so much for so many? According to Library Director Susanne Keefe, “The Friends of the South Coastal Library group does all the fund-raising

116

| OCEAN CITY 2014

to pay for nearly all the programs, classes and events we offer, as well as purchasing literacy/learning computers for the children, a self-check-out machine, and landscaping. They even funded an extra $25,000 to stock the Children’s Room with books when we literally “ran out” of books after our first summer in the newly renovated library. Actually, you wouldn’t have a new building without them—they raised over $2 million in two years to start the expansion project that doubled our size to over 22,000 square feet.” Among the fundraising events that benefit the Friends of the South Coastal Library is the 24th Annual Beach & Bay Cottage Tour, to be held July 22 – 23, 2015, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The exceptional homes to be featured on this year’s tour are sure to impress visitors with their variety in architecture, size and decorating styles. The Cottage Tour Committee has been organizing and working for months to make certain the 2015 tour lives up to the expectations of our patrons based on the successes of previous years’ tours. Tickets are $30. For information on the Friends’ Beach and Bay Cottage Tour, go to www.beachandbaycottagetour.com.

get a value for their dollar. The shrimp and scallops are hand-breaded daily with our own breading that is made in-house. Our Maryland Crab Soup is a recipe that goes back to 1929 to my grandfather (Jake Schneider of the original Jakes Seafood in Baltimore). The bisque is a rich, cream-based soup with scallops, shrimp, lobster, and crab: thick and rich. The Yellowfin Tuna and Rockfish come to us fresh from local vendors and usually the fish is caught in the mid-Atlantic area.

Mancini’s Brick Oven Pizzeria & Restaurant 907 Coastal Hwy., Fenwick Island 302-537-4224 Opened in 1995, Mancini’s has been pleasing beach patrons with authentic Italian dining for the past twenty years, making us one of the most recommended restaurants on the Maryland/Delaware coast. Our casually elegant atmosphere, excellent service and consistent quality all combine to assure a memorable night out.

Jakes Seafood House

29 Baltimore Ave., Rehoboth Beach 19178 Coastal Hwy., Rehoboth Beach 302-227-6237 & 302-644-7711 Jakes has prided itself since 1988 in preparing fresh, quality seafood using old family recipes and, obviously, some twists on newer menu items. We pride ourselves in the fact that 95% of the food in our restaurant is homemade and prepared to order. We opened up with a philosophy of serving old Baltimorestyle seafood using the best ingredients while trying to assure that our guests

Striper Bites Bistro

107 Savannah Rd., Lewes 302-645-4657 An award winning “nautical bistro” that evokes a fun spirited blend of the Northeast and Key West. Striper Bites features an array of fresh seafood cuisine along with chicken, steak, and salads. Open for lunch and dinner 7 days a week in season and closed Sunday during the off season.

The Buttery Restaurant

102 2nd St, Lewes, DE (302) 645-7755 www.butterrestaurant.com Nestled in Historic Lewes, Delaware you’ll find The Buttery a haven for inspired food served in a rich, warm and inviting atmosphere. Here, culinary creation and heavenly flavor mingle to make it one of the beach’s - and Delaware’s - favorite dining destinations. Its year round lunch and dinner service on The Veranda, set within lush garden scenery also makes The Buttery a Mid-Atlantic Garden of Eden. Accessible elegance is another Buttery hallmark; opulent and relaxed you can indulge your whims anytime and whether you’re there for Osso Bucco and a wonderful Shiraz or a Kobe Beef Burger and a beer, the only thing you’ll find fussy here is attention to detail, service and your complete happiness.

Tokyo Steakhouse

2745 N Salisbury Blvd, Salisbury, MD (410) 860-0078 17906 Coastal Hwy, Lewes, DE (302) 645-9728 Tokyo Steakhouse is really two restaurants in one. The main event is the hibachi dining, but there is also a regular dining room without the theatrics. If you have the kids or you’re in the mood for a show, then the performing chefs, the clanging of stainless steel and the flying food will be lots of fun. The Japanese tradition of ritual and the art of performance are at the center of the experience at Tokyo Steakhouse. In Teppanyaki-style cooking, the customers become part of the show. Eggs are twirled and cracked into mounds of sizzling rice, smoking stacks of onions caramelize as shrimp, chicken and beef are dramatically (and noisily) sliced, diced, flipped and generally tossed about. | DELAWARE BEACH 2014 | DELAWARE BEACH 2015

Tall Ship Sailing Adventures Feel the rush of the wind and the spray of the sea as you escape the modern world and travel back to the Age of Sail on board Kalmar Nyckel. We invite guests to sail alongside our volunteer crew for an adventure unlike any other today. Join us as we set sail for a couple hours of adventure on the water. Explore the decks and examine each detail of this meticulously re-created tall ship, while learning about her extraordinary history as a pioneer back in 1638. Learn “the ropes” and help haul the lines as we catch the wind and glide along the water. And if you are looking for a family-friendly activity that grandparents and children will both enjoy, sign your “X” on the line and become a pirate with the crew! Though the ship was never a “privateer” in her day, the modern day crew of Kalmar Nyckel enjoy dressing up and pretending to pillage and plunder. Help us raise the “Jolly Roger,” sing chanties, and collect doubloons, just like pirates of the 1700’s. Guests are encouraged to pack a picnic basket and a bottle of wine (sparkling grape juice for the kids) and lay their spread under the shade of the sails. Kalmar Nyckel is also available for private charters, making it a unique backdrop for family reunions, company outings and weddings.

Kalmar Nyckel is a full-scale re-creation of the ship that helped establish the first permanent settlement in present day Wilmington, Delaware. She was brought back to life by the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation, a nonprofit educational organization dedicated to “preserving and promoting the cultural and maritime heritage of Delaware for the education and enrichment of all.” Kalmar Nyckel sails out of the Cape May – Lewes Ferry Terminal from August 3rd through September 7th for 2 ½-hour excursions. Passage on these sails can be purchased online at KalmarNyckel.org or by calling the main office at 302-429-7447. We highly recommend purchasing passage in advance as sails do sell out. Tickets are also available at the dock. Photos by Andrew Hanna and Cathy Parsells.
