FOOD,

FUN,

Since 1989, Rams Head has been an award-winning favorite serving creative pub fare. Stop by and enjoy the cozy dining rooms, historic pub, Wisteria-covered patio, or the dogfriendly street café complete with dog menu. Annapolitans consider Rams Head their second home, voting it best bar, best happy hour, best beer selection, and best outdoor dining year after year. The historical roots of this location run deep. Formally called “The Crown and Dial” and “Sign of the Green Tree” in the late 1700’s, this historic location was purchased by a local family in 1989. Originally seating only 30 customers, the Rams Head Tavern has expanded over 25 years to become the bustling location it is today.

If you are looking for fun, Rams Head is the place to be. Live Music is found here 7 nights a week, as well as a legendary happy hour, and Jazz Brunch on Sundays featuring a $10 make your own Bloody Mary Bar. Rams Head hosts a seasonal craft beer release party the first Thursday of every month, ½ price wine bottle night, and a guess-the-weight of the monster lobster every Monday. For over 13 years Rams Head has hosted the largest St. Patrick’s Day in Annapolis with live music and Irish merriment. Visit the tavern on October 3rd and enjoy a free root beer float, a tradition celebrated over the years. The fun continues at other Rams Head locations including Rams Head Tavern at Savage Mill located in a historic 1820’s cotton mill, Rams Head Roadhouse in Crownsville, and Rams Head Shore House on Kent Island.

BEER,

MUSIC!

From its beginning as a sandwich shop, Rams Head has always offered the largest selection of beer in the area. In 1995 Rams Head founded Fordham Brewing Company, named in honor of Benjamin Fordham who was given a charter in 1703 by Queen Anne to establish a brewery in the heart of the new city. In 2003, after experiencing exponential growth, Fordham Brewing Co. moved to Dover, DE to expand and join forces with Dominion Brewing. The original copper kettles can still be seen inside the Tavern today. Rams Head maintains its close relationship with the brewery, carrying their entire line-up of craft beers, including Rams Head IPA. The World Beer Club features over 100 beers from around the world. Take a walk through the tavern and you’ll see the walls adorned with ‘Great Minds’ Plaques commemorating club graduates – repeat grads and local celebrities appear under aliases, Rams Head has been sworn to secrecy!

Music is at the heart of the Rams Head story. In fact, Rams Head books over 600 concerts a year, 350+ of them featured at Rams Head On Stage in Annapolis. Rams Head On Stage has been hailed as the top club under 500 seats in the world, by Pollstar Magazine. Legendary acts include Gordon Lightfoot, Eric Benet, Gregg Allman, Matisyahu, and Sara Bareilles. When the club first opened in 1997, Livingston Taylor was the inaugural act. Table service awaits you at this seated venue where you can enjoy beer, cocktails, wine, and light fare. There’s not a bad seat in the house, no table is further than 48 feet from the stage. Be sure to take advantage of the complimentary Premium On Stage Experience for a VIP night out. Local music can also be found at Rams Head Restaurants five nights a week for free, as well as jazz brunch on Sundays. Visit RAMSHEADONSTAGE.COM to see who’s playing On Stage tonight!

ENTERTAINMENT SPOTLIGHT

MISSION ESCAPE ROOMS BRINGS ESCAPE ROOM EXPERIENCE TO ANNAPOLIS

Q&A

with owner Jason Cherry

The escape room experience concept is not necessarily new. It actually started in Japan, then took off in Europe before arriving in the U.S. Despite it taking a few years for the trend to hit the U.S., it’s here now and is taking the interactive entertainment industry by storm. We recently had the opportunity to sit down and chat with Jason Cherry, owner of Mission Escape Rooms, a new entertainment experience in downtown Annapolis. Q: What is an escape room? A: Escape rooms are a fun, interactive, entertainment that provides a real-life escape experience. It’s designed for small groups of 6-12 people. Your mission is simple: work together as a team, testing your wits and skills, to escape from a locked room in 60 minutes or less. Q: Is it really scary? A: No, it’s not scary. It’s thrilling and challenging! Q: Do you do private parties and bookings? A: Yes, absolutely! Birthdays, showers, private parties. It’s also a great corporate team building activity. Q: In starting the business, what’s the most interesting thing you’ve learned? A: How intricate the clues and technology need to be to make a good game. We’ve invested a lot of time to ensure our visitors have a fun and challenging experience. Q: Each room has a theme, right? A: Yes. The puzzle in each room is created around a unique theme. The Annapolis location will have four rooms running simultaneously -- we have something that will appeal to everyone. We hope to see repeat visitors who make it their mission to master every room we create over time! Q: I have to ask, what’s with the lime green? A: Lime green inspires youthfulness and playfulness... exactly the feelings we want our visitors to experience. We’re located at 40 West Street, Annapolis, MD, across from Ramshead. You can’t miss us!

Above: Current rooms at Annapolis location. Room themes are subject to change. Visit www.missionescaperooms.com for current themes.

elcome to Landmarks’ latest marketing innovation, Lifestyle in Annapolis. For three decades we have Ron Szpatura, President been publishing the Landmarks hard cover in-room hotel publication. Over that period of time people have suggested that we create a publication with the same level of quality and information for the local community. Living and doing business in the community, we have established some very positive working relationships with many people that own and operate businesses. We share valuable information about how to enjoy your own Lifestyle in Annapolis, as well as introduce you to some of our favorite professionals, businesses and friends that serve the people living in this area. Get to know them by reading about their personal Lifestyle as well as the quality services they provide on the pages of Lifestyle in Annapolis. he Annapolis Lifestyle is unique and appealing. It is one place in the country that offers almost anything you might want within hours of your home. There's so much to see and do right in our state's capital it's really easy to forget the sights and attractions just outside the city. Our location is ideal for taking exciting day

trips-and you still get back home in time to get a good night's sleep! Maryland is densely packed with history, culture and spectacle. Living in Annapolis, you are only hours away to enjoy boating, fishing, crabbing, ski resorts, seven professional sports teams, some of the finest historical attractions in the country, the Atlantic Ocean, the symphony, opera, and endless cultural activities. There is something

for everyone just a car-ride away! Many people head south for the warmth in the winter and then return because they find they miss the charm of the four seasons. The variety of dealing with 90+ degrees of heat in the summer and shifting to 20 inches of snow in the winter creates a real variety in our lives. The opportunity to enjoy and work through four seasons every year makes the year less than boring. 80 degrees everyday sounds nice but think of the great wardrobes we develop and the opportunities to experience different things. Bordering the largest, natural estuary in the US, the Chesapeake Bay, water activity is endless. We can enjoy sailing races commandeered by our Yacht clubs with boats ranging from 10 feet to 50 plus feet, or just cruise to a quite cove along the 5,600 feet of shoreline and “drop the hook” and enjoy the evening solitude. There are 46 principal rivers and countless creeks to explore. Paddle your way on

your canoe, Kayak, or bogie board. Walk out to the end of your pier or take a short boat ride down your creek and pull in the plentiful crabs to steam that evening or fish for the local rockfish and other treasures. You just can’t get anything fresher

than the Bay to your skillet or crab pot. Dubbed the Land of Pleasant living, this is one of the biggest reasons why. Annapolis, one-time capital to these United States, has served as the State’s capital city since 1695. Home to the U.S. Naval Academy and St. John’s College, the city of almost 40,000 has been a center of political activity and intellectual gatherings over the years. In addition to the local politics, 25 miles away we have the opportunity to be involved or tour Washington DC. This provides a solid historical perspective with three signers of the Declaration of Independence, the place the George Washington resigned his commission among numerous other events and sites that tie us into American history.

For people that like to travel for business or pleasure access to Airports is very convenient with three major Airports close by. The BWI Corridor, the area surrounding the Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, is growing areas in Anne Arundel County. The enhancements of businesses and organizations supporting the Homeland Security initiatives have fueled growth in both the business and housing sectors. In additional to burgeoning hotels and restaurants, new housing is being built to support the expanding Ft. Meade area being one of many reasons we have a flourishing local economy. Education; Politics; Tourism; Government; Culture and History; All are prevalent in and around the area. But in the center of it all is Annapolis itself with a unique blend of small-town atmosphere and that cosmopolitan flavor. The richness of the past blends with the joy of the present leading to warm future prospects. The Annapolis is a place we call “home.”

Jan Gratz is an award winning photographer who owns a niche boutique portrait studio in the Annapolis area specializing in families and high school seniors portraiture. Her 1,000 square foot studio expresses comfort and creativity when you walk through its studio’s doors into its creative elegance with a rustic vintage twist.

Focal point: Photographer’s work is a window into the heart of clients. There are no fake smiles in pictures by Jan Gratz. She takes the time to get to know her clients, makes them comfortable and gets to their “essence.” “Some photographers are into their camera or their lenses,” said Theresa Peterson, a longtime friend who had Gratz take photos of her family. “She’s got a personality that makes people show their true selves in that lens.” The photo shoot included Peterson’s sister, who had stage 4 cancer.

Her journey from investments to images was a lifetime in the making.

She wasn’t feeling well the day of the shoot, but Gratz managed not only to put her at ease but show the family’s love for one another. “There was no way anyone else could have gotten the pictures she got that day,” Peterson said.

Gratz grew up on a Nebraska farm, the youngest of three children. Her parents taught her about hard work and money management. Business degrees run in the family and Gratz got one in finance from Creighton University.

Her sister has since died, and a photo of the two women is something Peterson cherishes. “She caught our relationship in one picture.”

“One of my dad’s many pieces of advice has served me well, and that is, ‘Don’t be afraid of risk. Just make sure it’s calculated risk.’ ’’ The advice has proven valuable in both of her careers.

Not bad for someone who spent the majority of her professional life working in finance and is self-taught as a photographer. She opened Jan Gratz Photography in 2012 after 25-plus years working for corporations managing retirement plans.

Looking back, pictures from her parents’ childhood spurred her

“When you finally find your passion, it feeds your soul. I remember when my first client teared up when she saw her daughter’s senior portraits. It touched my heart,” said the 50-something married mother of one. “That’s why it doesn’t feel like a job. I love going to my studio every day.”

interest in photography. Black and white pictures of her dad’s Army service during World War II were kept in a drawer at home and Gratz remembers pouring over them. Later, when he was in his 80s, she compiled them into a scrapbook that included his recollections of each, in a story that told his journey from childhood to WWII. Gratz started taking her own pictures while growing up. She got her first Nikon camera when she graduated from college. She used her

first bonus check from work to pay off student loans. The second funded a safari to Kenya – which she photographed in detail. She continued snapping pictures through the years – earning praise from business colleagues and relatives, all of whom commented on her artistic eye. “Photographers and artists see the world differently. I might be driving along and I see something that spurs a design idea in my mind for a project,” she said. Gratz began taking more pictures when her son, Jake, was the catcher on his high school baseball team. Gratz became the team photographer and that’s where her passion for the craft really ignited. She bought herself a pro Nikon camera and started capturing action shots on the baseball field, which grew into high school senior and family portraits, and then her studio was opened. She’s never regretted the decision. “Life can change in a second,” she said. “If you don’t pursue what you love, life is just going to go by. I didn’t always want to wonder ‘what if?’ I’m living my dream. How lucky can I be? There are countless hours, but it doesn’t feel that way. Like the old saying goes, “If you love what you do, you’ll never work another day in your life.”

Getting the picture “Welcome to the studio. Thanks for coming in. Tell me a little bit about you and your family.” Gratz greets clients in a comfortable 1,000-square-foot Edgewater studio decked out in her favorite colors – purple and black. She talks to families in an area resembling a living room, chatting about their needs and her portrait services from a plush sofa. On a table in front of the couch are albums with samples of her work. The walls are covered with pictures, as well, and faces leap from the canvas. Music always plays in the background. “When you see her studio and you see her in action, you know she has that passion,” said Adaiha Montgomery.

Gratz created a multi-generational portrait for Montgomery. “I look at it all the time,” she said. “It shows me how my life has grown. Her pictures aren’t just pictures. They tell a story.” The photographer’s portfolio includes pictures of families, graduates, pets and athletes. although she’s always expanding her repertoire. Pictures are in color and black and white, something for which she has a special affinity. In every case, people’s gazes run deep. “The key in portraiture is knowing how to capture their expression and their spirit through the eyes,” she said. “That’s when you can see who they really are.” She continually attends photography workshops to learn new techniques and perspectives. Prices are tailored to the client, but no assignment is done in haste. Gratz spends hours discussing pictures, helping clients choose their wardrobes, having a professional makeup artist and hair stylist available for the day, and setting up shoots. They can be at her studio, but just as easily by the water or on a sports field. “It’s always upbeat,” said Leah Anonsen, her assistant. “There’s a lot of laughter.” It doesn’t mean Gratz isn’t serious about her craft. She simply puts people at ease and allows them to open up. “You can get crazy creative with your shots, but to me it’s more about connecting with people.” Lisa Dressel, who had family photos taken, said her husband and son had a habit of forcing smiles in pictures. Not with Gratz. “She got past the fake smile,” Dressel said. “She got their real smiles.” This is what Gratz loves about her profession, which she views as more of a calling. In that vein, she gives back, contributing to several charities through fundraisers. She also serves on the fundraising board of the local Lighthouse Shelter for the homeless. On the back of every wall portrait she creates, she places a silver envelope with a card inside for her client to write a special handwritten note to their children Loved ones get two gifts: the legacy of a portrait and a story to go with it. “At the end of my life, I wanted to say I made a difference – that I created great memories for my clients to love and enjoy in their homes and to tell stories to their children and grandchildren, like my parents did for me. A house becomes a home when it is filled with memories that line your walls and shelves and tell your story.” Interviewed and written by Theresa Winslow, 1 Final Draft

Tucked away in the Annapolis City Marina, the restaurant’s new red paint job is an inviting Annapolis landmark that guides visitors across the bridge into Eastport. Since 1983, Carrol’s Creek has been serving fine food including steaks, chops, and of course, fresh local seafood. Their Sunday brunch is wildly popular and considered one of the best in town. 34 Lifestyles in Annapolis

Ruth Chris, one of the truly premiere steak houses in the country, is located the next block up on Third Street. There is outside dining area enabling visitors to enjoy the wonderful bay breezes while enjoying an extraordinary meal with the finest steaks, wine’s and other exceptional choices. Your service will always be first-classattentive, but never fussy. Excellent service and valet parking are two things you will find at this truly exceptional restaurant. Right across the street from Ruth Chris you can find what many local people consider to be Annapolis’ best seafood restaurant, O’Leary’s. Opened on the waterfront in the late 80’s, O’Leary’s has grown from a great seafood market to one of the area’s most comfortable dining experience. When the Annapolis senate is in session, you will see many of our elected officials mingling with the locals and owners of some of those beautiful boats sitting right outside your window at O’Leary’s.

For the ultra- local experience, Boatyard Bar & Grill is a very popular meeting place. ‘The Boatyard’, as locals call it, offers a casual dining menu with a raw bar and great comfort food in a ‘Key West’ inspired environment. The restaurant has been voted several times the number one crab cake in the state of Maryland. If you want casual and bar conversations about boating and “the one that got away”, Boatyard is an absolute must do. Locally sourced and organic ingredients–each capable of being paired with an equally impressive selection from their wine and beer menu. From panoramic waterfront views to serious steaks and seafood, or comfort food to eclectic, Eastport has a restaurant to suit everyone’s taste.

he increasing popularity of sushi is one indication of a trend. Today, for various reasons, people are becoming more cosmopolitan in their eating habits and learning that what they may not have cared for at one time can be not only appetizing but wholesome as well. Traditional sushi ingredients fit in well with the modern preference for reducing intake of red meat and carbohydrates. To put it another way, not all epicurean delights are good for the health. But sushi is. As we have seen, canned or artificially preserved foods are shunned, and the variety of ingredients is astounding and satisfying. Sushi fish are rich in proteins and some in minerals like calcium phosphorus and iron, The vinegar added to sushi rice has antibacterial properties prevents fatigue and lessens the risk of arteriosclerosis and high blood pressure. Shellfish are said to have rejuvenating effects on the body, particularly on the skin. Put simply, sushi is a health food in the truest sense.

here is so much history in Annapolis, and many of the downtown area shops capture the essence of this old city, its maritime heritage, and its unique style. Perhaps best known is the downtown Historic District, comprised of the City Dock, Main Street, Maryland Avenue, State Circle, West Street, and the West Annapolis area. These neighborhood-style shops have a distinctive flavor bringing something unique to our shopping experience. Main Street and the City Dock showcase a pleasant mixture of quality, locally-owned specialty shops side-by-side with some smaller chain stores. Maryland Avenue and State Circle charm us with small, unique shops catering to your home, even your pets. Inner West Street is home to some wonderful new shops and galleries, interspersed with happening restaurants and the bars of our nightlife scene. All are set in the midst of Annapolis’ unsurpassed historic architecture. Upper West Street, the new kid on the block, offers style and living-here shopping opportunities that everyone can enjoy. Another great place to browse small shops and enjoy a quiet stroll down quaint streets is West Annapolis. Here, out by the Navy-Marine Corps Stadium, you can choose from antiques, galleries, and specialty shops. There is plenty of free parking, too. For mall aficionados, Westfield Shopping, Arundel Mills, Harbour Center, Festival at Riva, South River Shops, Town Center at Parole, and smaller venues offer a variety of nationally-known shopping options. And, as with any growing area, we love our specialty shops along highways and byways. 42 Lifestyles in Annapolis

Annapolis area shops are justly proud of their reputation for customer service, and you will find friendly and helpful assistance everywhere you visit. No matter what time of year you choose, Annapolis offers a shopping experience that will make you want to return again and again to our local shops! If you want to shop digitally, use Annapolis’ own local ‘deal site’, LandmarksGreatDeals.com, where you can save 25% to 50% on shopping, food and other activities.

51 Before Sandler Training, Steve spent 5 years as President/ CEO of a global retail loss prevention company. This was preceded by successful high-tech Sales VP positions in the supply chain management, data collection, retail security and telecommunications industries. Steve has led sales teams from as few as 5 to over 130 sales representatives in both direct sales and channel sales models. He has jump-started early stage companies and has been VP Sales in a $1B publicly traded company. He took a division from $2M in annual revenue to $165M leading both a direct and indirect channel, and was selected in his first selling role to be a national sales trainer for a prominent office products company.

Q: What’s the one problem you are best at solving for your clients? A: I am great at asking my clients about their problems - listening well - and asking the right questions to get to the root of their challenges. Once you get to the “real pain” with a client, it becomes easier to coach and train them for improved performance.

Q: Who have you worked with in the past? And what have you done for them? A: I have worked with IT salespeople, home remodeling owners, engineering sales, financial planners, medical product salespeople - just about any type of profession that requires the need to generate revenue for their business. What I have done for them all is to better understand communications and the human dynamic of our differences. I have given them a new perspective on “selling” in that it’s the Buyer who wants to be in control, not the Seller, and when you can solve their issue after a great selling “interview” - then they will usually want to buy. They become different from traditional salespeople. They listen - they don’t chase - they become “disarmingly honest” and that’s what Buyers like most.

Q: What are your clients saying? A: My clients agree I am 100 percent committed to their improvement in sales. I make myself available for them and they know I care about their success.

CHERRYPICKER

The goal of a good public relations campaign is to tell the client’s story. The hallmark of a great campaign is finding that story worth telling. Marc Apter, president of Image Power, a public relations firm based in Annapolis, has made a career out of imagining and promoting stories that paint his clients in the most favorable light possible.

Apter created a successful media event with Maryland Govenor William Donald Schaefer in Annapolis that won national news coverage.

I

t was Apter who put Governor William Donald Schaefer in a cherry picker to collect the branch that would be used to clone the Revolutionary War-era Liberty Tree at St. John’s College. And when a group of students from a Washington, D.C. high school learned that a foundation that had promised them full scholarships was defunct, it was Apter who sparked St. Mary’s College of Maryland to save the day.

of the original 1963 March. The dedication, in spite of competition with commemorative events in the nation’s capital, resulted in standing room only crowds and major media coverage in the Washington Post, Baltimore Sun, Annapolis Capital and every TV news station in the Baltimore-Washington corridor. The publicity campaign surrounding the event garnered professional awards at the local and state level.

Recalling the media event that involving Schaefer, Apter said, “We were tasked with increasing Marylanders’ awareness of local history. The resulting story got major coverage not only in the surrounding region, but was picked up by the New York Times and ABC News.”

“It was especially meaningful to work on the Foot Soldiers Memorial knowing that my dad had been the PR lead for the original March on Washington,” Apter said. A teenager at the time, Apter worked as a “go-fer” alongside his father at that historic event. Both of their names are included on the wall. Apter also ran the PR for the 20th and 30th anniversaries of the March.

Passing history down to the next generation More recently it was Apter who helped the Anne Arundel MLK Jr. Committee with the promotion of a Civil Rights Foot Soldiers Memorial in Annapolis. Unveiled in 2013 on the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington, this monument celebrates the 250,000 “foot soldiers” 52 Lifestyles in Annapolis

Those concerts have taken place locally at the Unitarian Unversalist Church of Annapolis, as well as at Strathmore Hall in Bethesda, MD. “I count on Marc to provide a fresh spin on each of these concerts, to attract firsttime attendees as well as those who have followed me on this mission since the first performance in 2010,” notes Ganz. “It was he who came up with the idea of calling this quest ‘Extreme Chopin,’ riffing off of the extreme sport craze. And in its way, it is extreme in that it in the 167 years since Chopin’s passing, it has never been done before. I did, however, have to draw the line at the Nascar-esque jumpsuit Marc was pushing me to wear on stage,” Ganz quips.

America’s Cup winner Gary Jobson, the principal of Annapolis-based Jobson Sailing Inc., which promotes the sport of sailing at all levels, is another client. Jobson recently produced two films that were featured in the 2016 Annapolis Film Festival. With Apter’s assistance, the viewing was a sell-out.

“Marc has an almost ‘take no prisoners’ attitude when it comes to getting results. His knowledge of sailing, combined with ample creative juices resulted in a successful outcome for the screening of my films in a very short time period, said Jobson.

He also is an active member of the National Press Club and an associate member of the Society of American Travel Writers. Look for Apter’s presence in upcoming publicity for the National Philharmonic at Strathmore or Virginia’s Castleton Music Festival, among other current clients. Or on “Hunky Dory," sailing on the waters near Arundel on the Bay.

A labor of love Apter’s work for Jobson is a happy marriage of professional and personal interests. An avid sailor, Apter makes his home in Arundel on the Bay where he keeps his personal fleet, which includes a Hobie Cat, a Laser and a Hunter 23. “I like to say that I own 112’ of yachts,” Apter says with a smile. He is moved by his sailing adventures. “Each experience left me with a renewed love of sailing as well as an appreciation of the beauty of nature,” Apter notes. “Witnessing meteor showers on the high seas is an experience that feels almost spiritual.” When not sailing or spending time with his two grown sons and their families, which include six grandchildren, Apter hones his PR prowess by staying active in a number of

hether you enjoy our region for a vacation, business trip, or a simple stay-at-home weekend, Ron Szpatura, Founder and President of Landmarks, is determined to make your time spent here the best it can be by providing you with quality lifestyle information and discounts at LandmarksGreatDeals.com. “I enjoy telling people that our job is to eat in all the best restaurants, stay in all the best accommodations, and shop around town,” says Ron Szpatura. “We enjoy our work and hope others enjoy the work we do.” When Ron moved to the Annapolis area, he became involved in the founding of what is now the Annapolis and Anne Arundel Visitor’s Bureau, where he recruited its first 100 members. As one of the original directors, Ron helped to develop the vibrant visitor market we have here today. Based in the historic Maritime Republic of Eastport in an office building overlooking Spa Creek, Landmarks has grown in size, coverage area, and reputation over the past 29 years since it was founded in 1988. From beautiful hardbound publications in hotel rooms to LandmarksGreatDeals.com, and our newest project, Lifestyles in Annapolis, Landmarks has developed some of the most comprehensive and quality area information resources in the industry, gaining the trust of both visitors and business owners in the towns we serve. “We pride ourselves in the quality of our finished products and being the ‘go-to-guides’ placed In over 20,000 rooms for Mid-Atlantic travel – whether you’ve just opened our book in your hotel room or used our LandmarksGreatDeals.com to get a "deal" on your next meal, activity, or lodging. Digital commerce continues to grow over the years and gives the traveler advance opportunities on making the most of their trip and lifestyle at home.” Ron, his wife Angela, and their faithful Golden Retriever, Chessie, have made Annapolis their home. Since moving to the area, the Szpaturas have become part of both the business and residential community. Although the Chesapeake Bay lifestyle initially attracted Ron to the Annapolis area, he also has fond memories of many other places throughout the region. 58 Lifestyles in Annapolis

“If people enjoy reading our book about Annapolis, why couldn’t we do this in other places. Landmarks ventured into other areas throughout Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania–all of which now enjoy a variety of Landmarks media products. But it’s more than just the market and product line that makes Ron’s job fun. “It’s the people!” he exclaims. “The team of people I work with and the clients we work for are what make our work and play one in the same,” he continued. Ron’s emphasis on fun makes for an enlightened team that enjoys company summits and activities throughout the year. “We have a unique corporate culture developed from a desire to play hard and work hard,” Ron says with pride. Sales, sales training, and entrepreneurship are three of Ron’s business passions. He has been involved in the training and development of over 2,000 sales representatives and is currently writing a book called “Selling Your Way to Margaretville.” So what would Ron want people to think when they think of Landmarks? “We present quality destination information in a variety of ways that help the 10 million visitors we reach each year have a better experience.” Landmarks Lifestyle is a whole new concept that will be in both digital and print formats, giving our audience Information on how to enjoy your lifestyle and sharing the many ways that our clients enjoy the Chesapeake region. abeled a keynote empowerment speaker, Master Rick Rando (www.randospeaks.com) has conducted thousands of seminars/teambuilding experiences in the business community and in academia since 1995. A traditional taekwondo practitioner for the past 29-years, he currently owns

But Master Rando’s high-octane presentations culminate not only on the martial arts training floor, but in mentoring executives and their TEAM members in the ever-so-fluid corporate world. “Master Rando is one of those rare speakers/coaches who’s both engaging and effective.” says Mrs. Danielle Willetts (President of Little Dog Social Media). “He uses his martial arts background to create unique and memorable presentations for his clients…and who doesn’t like board breaking to get the point across?” A graduate of the Disney Institute for Business Excellence, Rando’s been the keynote speaker working with companies such as Chick-fil-A, Frostburg State University, the Belt Group, the Maryland State Highway Administration, Garrett College, Columbia Gas/NiSource, the West Virginia Health Care Association, Flagship Rehabilitation, Century Martial Arts, and Charm City Cakes (from Food Network’s hit show: Ace of Cakes) to name a few. Master Rando says his ultimate goal is for “servant cohesiveness and leadership through example to sweep every business, non-profit, academic organization, and family unit throughout the world, making our daily interactions positive and valuable.” He’s been featured on the cover of both Allegany and MA Success Magazines as a modern-day marketing/service expert, unifying these two concepts in the business world.

5 Elements and 8 Principles There are two main types of Acupuncture in the United States. At MUIH, the focus has been 5 Element, combining how our bodies compare to nature, bringing them back to the natural way of healing. Eight principle treatments focus more on treating the specific issues. Since studying Chinese Herbs, I have learned that each treatment has an important focus and the treatment is best determined by meeting the patient where they are, by getting to the root of the issue rather than focusing on branches alone, this will help prevent the issue to come back again. The body is whole One of the reasons Kim fell in love with Chinese Medicine, is the philosophy that the body is one whole unit. Rather than breaking it up by treating one part at a time (cardiology, gynecology, ENT, etc.) and not worrying how another part may be damaged by side effects. When a patient comes in for their first appointment, she spends an hour and a half getting to know the whole person and understanding how they came to this point of pain or other type of issue. Then she performs a short physical exam and evaluates the tongue and pulses. In Chinese medicine, we take six pulses on each wrist which

correspond to each of the 12 meridians. Thw tongue also gives us a great wealth of information. It is through the interview, the intake information, and the examination where we can begin to connect the dots and understand the treatment focus to help bring patients closer to the point of wellness. Types of healing Kim has treated many types of issues of the body/mind/spirit. Ranging from: different types of pain (shoulder, foot, sciatic, migraine, fibromyalgia), stomach issues, intestinal issues, tinnitus, anxiety, cancer (or the effects of treatments), stroke, weight management, etc. She offers FREE fifteen minute consultations if you have questions about how she can help you. Insurance or not? Kim is a provider for Blue Cross Blue Shield, Carefirst, Cigna, Aetna, and United Healthcare. Check with her and see if your insurance will cover your treatments. Insurance is covering Acupuncture more every day. If not, she offers different plans to help make your treatments affordable. Call her if you have questions.

ask the expert Q: How do you make a large house feel like home? A: While today’s living often commands large-scale space, the beauty of welldesigned interior architecture is that you can create intimate details that scale down these spaces. Q: What makes a successful plan? A: The key to a successful plan is not only that it is exceptionally functional, but it creates emotion through its visual connectedness between the interior space and the beauty of the outside and other adjoining spaces. Q: How do you communicate with your client through the design process? A: We use multiple communication tools to share our design vision. Our initial work is completed through free-hand sketches and review of inspiration imagery. As the project develops, we refine the design details through our 3-D drawing tools and continued conversation.

Last November, the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2015 (BBA) was signed into law averting a United States default and deferring further discussion of U.S. debt and spending levels until after 2016’s presidential and congressional elections. While the new law simplifies some issues for our nation’s leaders, it may complicate others because the BBA includes provisions that affect Social Security retirement benefits.

SocialSecurity Security rules are changing – again – again Social rules are changing

CNBC reported a paper published by The Center for Retirement Research at Boston College estimated these strategies could cost roughly $10 billion each year.7

When the Senior Citizens Freedom to Work Act of 2000 (SCFWA) was signed into law, it eliminated the Social Security earnings test for Americans who reach full retirement age and want to continue to work.2 (Full retirement age for people born after 1943 is about 66. For those born after 1960, full retirement age is 67.3) The earnings test, which remains in place for Social Security beneficiaries who are younger than full retirement age, causes $1 of benefits to be withheld for every $2 in earnings above the annual earnings limit.4

That claim has been disputed by other experts in the field who argue few new retirees are able to delay taking benefits long enough to truly maximize their income from Social Security. The Decision to Delay Social Security Benefits, a 2012 paper written by John Shoven, Director of the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research, and economist Sita Nataraj Slavov, reported:8, pgs 2 and 33

While the SCFWA was a welcome change for many Americans of retirement age, it changed the way taxpayers approached Social Security benefits. Prior to the SCFWA, many people thought, as the Social Security Administration suggested, they would receive approximately the same amount of benefits whether they retired early, at full retirement age, or later. Early retirees received lower benefit payments than people who retired at full retirement age or later, and late retirees received higher payments than people who retired at full retirement age or earlier.3

We have shown that delaying Social Security is actuarially advantageous for a large subset of the population… However, we find little empirical evidence that actual claiming behavior is related to the actuarial advantage of delay. Indeed, most individuals appear to claim shortly after reaching age 62 or stopping work. Labor supply appears to be the primary determinant of the claiming decision. We do find a consistent relationship between education levels and delayed claiming, possibly because education may be associated with financial literacy or a longer life expectancy.”

While that may have been true at one time, rapidly increasing longevity caused some experts to reach a different conclusion. Laurence Kotlikoff, a professor of Economics at Boston University, wrote:5

While there is a clear monetary advantage to delaying Social Security benefits, few people actually chose to delay, so the cost to the system may not have been as high as projected.

For a high-earning, 60-year-old couple…if they wait until 70 to collect their retirement benefits, they will still be up $350,000 compared to taking their retirement benefits at 62. That’s the power of being able to wait to collect a 76 percent greater check every month from age 70 through 100 if you live that long.” One of the unexpected consequences of the SCFWA was it created loopholes in the Social Security system. By employing specific claiming strategies, taxpayers could increase the amount of lifetime benefits they received from Social Security.6 Receiving higher benefits helped Social Security recipients; however, paying higher benefits had the potential to put additional stress on an already taxed Social Security system. 84 Lifestyles in Annapolis

BBA changes claiming rules Regardless of analysis suggesting the cost of claiming strategies could be much lower than believed, the BBA’s new rules eliminate two claiming strategies – “Claim and Suspend” and “Claim Now, Claim More Later” – rather abruptly. • Claim and Suspend (a.k.a. file and suspend strategy). The strategy allows individuals to claim and then voluntarily suspend their Social Security benefits. Since they suspend the benefits, they can accrue delayed retirement credits. When a working person claims and suspends benefits, his or her spouse can claim spousal benefits, allowing a couple to receive benefits today, and receive benefits enhanced by delayed retirement credits in the future if the working spouse claims benefits after full retirement age.9

Optimized Filing Timeline

Important Retirement Dates

Filling the Income Gap

The wealth management professionals at Premier Planning Group can help clients estimate the most financially advantageous strategy in order to maximize Social Security benefits. Using advanced software, our experts can input a client’s Social Security data to find the best withdrawal date down to the month and week. This tool is effective for clients who are near retirement age and are considering whether to collect Social Security or to engage personal or spousal benefits, as well as for younger clients who are planning a careerlong wealth management strategy for themselves and their families.

The new rules established by the BBA will make Claim and Suspend strategies unavailable beginning May 1, 2016. As a result Americans who are at (or past) full retirement can take advantage of the opportunity, but they must claim and suspend before April 30, 2016.10 • Claim Now, Claim More Later (a.k.a. restricted application strategy). This strategy allows married individuals to claim spousal benefits from Social Security while not claiming their personal benefits. Delaying personal benefits means they are able to earn delayed retirement credits. When they reach full retirement age, they can choose between receiving their personal benefits or receiving their spousal benefits.9 The new rules eliminate this strategy at the end of the year. Americans who reach age 62 in 2016 may be able to employ it, but younger Americans will not have the opportunity.11 If you are currently employing these strategies, you may be grandfathered. More information will be available when the Social Security Administration offers its interpretation of the new rules, and that should happen before the end of this year.12 If either of these strategies is a part of your current retirement plan, and you are not at an age where you can execute the strategy, you may want to work with a financial professional to redesign your plan.

MEET THE PILLARS OF THE COMMUNITY

ANNAPOLIS LAWYERS

I

n 1962 Sam Brown moved to Annapolis on his birthday with his parents, Abraham (Brownie) and Lu Brown, and his three siblings, Debbie, Stephen and George. His mother still lives in the house Sam’s parents purchased in 1962.

Sam grew up in a home where family, religion, country, music and education were important. His dad was a music teacher and professional singer, while his mother stayed at home until she began working for the Board of Education. They taught the Brown clan the importance of education, respect, honesty and gave them a strong work ethic. Sam graduated from Annapolis High School, attended Anne Arundel Community College, transferred into University of Virginia and then obtained his Law Degree from the American University's Washington College of Law in Washington, DC. He married and had three children, Sarah, Sammy and Lexi. Then with his marriage to Donna in 2013, with the addition of Mickey, Johnny, Annie and Georgia, they grew to a family of nine. If you know Sam, you know that, "there is no substitute for close family." Until his father's death, Sam received a call, or message from his dad every day telling him that, "We (his mom and dad) love you." It was his parents who instilled these strong family values and built the foundation that holds the Brown family together as they continue his parents' legacy. Sam believes in immersing himself in activities; and his Church and the Annapolis community are solid recipients of this belief, "Annapolis is its own family. Everyone from Annapolis eventually comes back; and everyone who comes wants to stay." One of the great things

about Annapolis is the closeness of the town and the people who share their lives here, "It it nice to walk up Main Street and be greeted daily by friends and even strangers." Sam started practicing in Annapolis in December of 1976. (A bicentennial beginning) He became a partner at Hillman, Brown and Darrow on January 1, 1978, after the death of Noah Hillman, and founded Hillman, Brown and Darrow in 1979 with RichSamuel J. Brown ard Hillman and Michael Darrow. HBD, Hillman, Brown & Darrow, P.A. is a full-service law Since 1983 Sam has practiced out of firm representing clients throughout 221 Duke of Goucester Street; and as Maryland and of December 19, 2016, Sarah Brown Washington, D.C. will join the firm. Over the years, he has served on countless community boards and taken the opportunity to give back to Annapolis. Two of his most recent endeavors are working with historical groups focusing on the '14 Presidents Before Washington' and serving on the Library Foundation Board, helping to raise funds for the Anne Arundel County Library system. Annapolis is a Lifestyle, "here you have the opportunity to meet so many people from every walk of life. Annapolis is made up of so many diverse groups that there is no end to its charm and character." According to Sam, while Annapolis may appear like a sleepy little town, still waters run deep. Every season brings new activity and with every new activity, comes a new and exciting experience. Sam calls Annapolis his home and is proud of everything that his family has accomplished here. He can't wait to see what the future holds. His office is just steps away from the Maryland Statehouse, the Govenor's House and the County Courthouse. His family at Hillman, Brown and Darrow (HBD) has been a fixture in Annapolis for a long time. On the celebration of his 40th year practicing Law, we slalute Sam for the difference he has, and will continue to make, to his family, his church , his town, his county and his clients.

The deep roots, traditions and core values of Hillman, Brown & Darrow are as enduring as the 115 year old historic building they occupy.

HBD’s lawyers and staff are not satisfied, however, with just enjoying their successful, long respected reputation.
