Y me dijo: salgamos a tomar algo. Y nos metimos en todo. Y nos metimos de todo.

Así comienza la narración de mis vacaciones. Era junio, y teníamos todo el verano por delante. Uno de esos veranos plagados de topicazos reproducidos en spots de cervezas tostadas al sol que abanderan el Mediterráneo como nación en la que domina la baja tensión en los cuerpos. La Costa: territorio en el que se practica la filosofía de lo lounge y cuyo himno está remezclado en versión chill-out. En Marina d’Or está plantado el Árbol de la Sabiduría y Adán y Eva se untan protector solar en la playa mientras beben caipirinha con jugo de manzana. Pero igual es más interesante contar lo que pasa en los centros peninsulares, en aquellos lugares no recreativos durante las fiestas estivales, o al menos no tan programadamente recreativos. Igual es más interesante narrar lo que pasa en el continente cuando los castizos emigran a la periferia. Cuando Madrid se convierte en la nueva Detroit.

Verano de 2015. El futuro distópico ha llegado a la urbe. Los provincianos nos han abandonado y los refugios del invierno quedan cerrados por vacaciones. La Capital del mundo ha sido asolada por una plaga de zombies ataviados con corbata y maletín parlamentario. Solo nos queda salir. Salir a unas calles que irradian un calor proyectado por el asfalto. Hacía un calor... al igual que hace ya tiempo hizo un ruido que reverberó con regustillo a verbena. Pero ahora hace calor. Mucho calor. Un calor febril y delirante. Y nos abrasamos, y nos desquiciamos, y salimos de nuestros cuerpos lisiados en un viaje astral alejado del paraíso que las postales nos prometieron. Y nos vimos desde arriba.

Nos vimos desde arriba recorrer nuestra ciudad dormida en bicicletas del antiguo imperio. Porque las bicicletas son para el verano, y las eléctricas son para la eternidad. Porque en las carreteras del Madrid neon-lítico suena a Electric Youth todoelrato. Y viajamos desde el skyline empresarial hasta el downtown pasando por un Central Park clausurado. Y al pasar por allí respiramos el aire fresco que transportaba restos de aspersores y emulsiones de manadas que practican cruising como deporte al aire libre. Pero no estamos en NYcity amigas, vivimos en un sucedáneo de América, es decir, un sucedáneo de un sucedáneo. Callao jamás será Times Square.

En verano lo peor de cada casta se apropia de la ciudad. En verano los cuerpos practican la calle: los ancianos leen P. B. Preciado en las piscinas municipales, los niños descubren su sexualidad masturbándose con los chorros de Madrid Río, los adultos follan a pelo en los pantanos del Generalísimo y los jóvenes hacemos orgías en teatros. Y sudados volvemos a salir porque no hay nada que hacer dentro.

Salimos de fiesta por locales míticos de rutas olvidadas. Las autovías destruyeron las escalas. Ahora los viajes solo tienen origen y destino sin permitirnos dibujar las rayas de la carretera que han sido borradas. Volvamos a los bajos de Azca. Donde entre mezcalina y pastillas pop podamos proponer viajes sin movernos del sitio.

Sin movernos del sitio porque no tenemos dinero. Sin movernos del sitio porque estamos cansados. Sin movernos del sitio porque ya nos lo hemos imaginado todo.

Imaginamos todo porque tenemos miedo de hacer, porque cuando hacemos algo mal... nos pegan. Estamos semanalmente identificados por parecer no se qué cosa sospechosa, nos dijeron. Ahora Madrid y luego qué, grita la voz de ultratumba de la vocal de MAM en Vaciador 34. Ahora Madrid y luego... Madrid Forever.

THE STREETS ARE BURNING IN NEW DETROIT

She told me: let’s have a drink. So we went everywhere. And consumed everything.

The story of my vacations begins like that. It was June, and we had the whole summer ahead of us. One of those summers replete with clichés depicted by places with beers toiling in the sun, labeling the Mediterranean as a nation where the bodies remain relaxed. La Costa: a land where the lounge philosophy is practiced and whose anthem is mixed in a chill-out version. At Marina d’Or, the Tree of Knowledge is found; Adam and Eve use sunscreen at the beach and drink caipirinhas with apple juice while they dance. But anyway, it’s more interesting to tell the story of what’s happening in the peninsular center, in those non-recreational places, ok, at least not recreationally designed, during the summer holidays. It’s more interesting to tell what happens in the continent when the locals leave to the periphery. When Madrid becomes the new Detroit.

Summer of 2015. The dystopian future has met the city. The rural dwellers left us and the winter havens remain closed for the holidays. The Capital of the world has been stricken by a plague of zombies who dress up in suits and carry with them parliamentary briefcases. And all we have left to do is to go out. Out to the streets that radiate heat, where the asphalt smokes. It was hot… just like a long time ago a noise that tasted like verbena was produced. Now is hot too. Too hot. Feverish and delirious heat. And we hug, and drive each other crazy, and leave our handicapped bodies to take an astral trip, away from the paradise that was promised to us by postcards. And we see each other from above.

We see each other from above as we stroll in bicycles that came from an old world around the city that dwells asleep. Because bicycles were made for the summer, while the electric ones were made for eternity. Because across the roads of the neonlithic Madrid, Electric Youth plays all the time. And we travel, leaving the corporate skyline behind, all the way downtown, passing by the Central Park that remains closed. And, as we walk pass it, we breathe in the fresh air that contains pieces of sprinklers and ointments from groups that practice cruising as an outdoor sport. But we are not in New York City gals; we live in one of America’s substitutes, I mean, in a substitute of a substitute. Callao will never be the Times Square.

During the summer the worst of each breed comes to surface to seize the earth.

During the summer unveiled bodies practice in the street: the elderly read P. B. Preciado in public pools, the kids discover their sexuality masturbating with the jets that come from Madrid’s Río park, adults fuck stripped off their clothes over the Generalísimo’s swamps and the youngsters, well, we like to have orgies in theatres.

Sweating and panting we go back outside, because there’s nothing to do if we stay in. We go out partying in legendary clubs scattered along forgotten streets. Highways destroyed all scales. Now, when we travel, we only have a starting point and a destination, hindering us from drawing the lines the road has erased. Let’s return to the basements in AZCA. Were, amidst mescaline and popping pills we induce travels without moving ourselves. Without moving, since we are drained, exhausted.

Without moving because we have already imagined everything. Imagined everything because we are frightened of doing anything, because when we do something wrong… we are beaten, like dogs. Each week they have us identified, because we might look anything suspicious, at least that’s what we are told. ‘Now Madrid and then what?!’ yells the grave-like voice from the MAM in Vaciador 34, and then…

Madrid Forever.

Existimos en un reino del cual rara vez salimos. Nuestra existencia nos mantiene ocupados de una manera que hace que sea difícil tomar riesgos y reinventarnos… una muda constante… donde lanzamos nuestro antiguo ser para entrar en una nueva fase de crecimiento. Pero algunas veces, dichos cambios no son elegidos por nosotros. Y así, somos llevados a un lugar nuevo, inexplorado y lleno de peligro. A medida que te haces viejo, los cambios que ocurren en la mente compiten con aquellos del cuerpo, incitando este viaje hacia un territorio desconocido.

Mi abuela sufre de demencia. Mientras la pintaba hubo muchas voces, tanto externas como internas, que entraron en foco, causando un vacío en mi proceso. A medida que continuaba pintando a mi abuelo, ella expresó sentimientos de exclusión, y aunque ha cambiado de manera profunda, ella ansia continuar con las pinturas y me lo hizo saber. Ha inspirado en gran medida mis últimos trabajos, donde exploro su viaje, en algunos casos peligroso. Con conciencia, algunas veces vibrante y otras veces colgando de un hilo, me ha invitado a seguir su camino… mientras ella camina hacia afuera.

We exist in a realm we rarely step outside of. Our everyday existence occupies us in ways that challenge our ability to take chances and reinvent ourselves… a constant molting… throwing off our old self to enter a new phase of growth. But sometimes those changes are not of our choosing. We are taken to a new place, unexplored and full of peril. As you get old, changes in the mind rival those of the body, prompting this travel to unknown territory.

My grandmother is now experiencing dementia. There were lots of voices, both external and then internal, that came into focus, causing a momentary hiatus of my painting her. As I continued to paint my grandfather, my grandmother expressed feelings of exclusion. Although she has changed in profound ways, she longed to continue the paintings, and she told me so. She has greatly inspired my latest work, exploring her sometimes-perilous journey. With awareness, sometimes vibrant and at other times hanging on by a thread, she has invited me to follow her journey… as she walks outside.

La Soledad de los números primos

Sus fotos tienen la crudeza de un sentimiento muy íntimo. Como decía Rubén Darío, cuando la juventud se va, las lágrimas aparecen sin sentido, desordenadas. Y eso es porque son puras, de vuelta inocentes.

La soledad de la vejez y la incertidumbre de la juventud son dos momentos en la vida que se nos quedan guardados ya para siempre, junto al paisaje en el que los habitamos. Matt Wilson se queda quieto, en silencio, parado ante esos paisajes, viendo pasar la luz sobre ellos, hasta que consigue que la tierra le hable. Es ahí cuando dispara y alivia una parte de su propia conciencia del paso del tiempo. Desde que vimos las imágenes de Matt nos quedamos atrapados por la luz cinematográfica de sus instantáneas y la cotidianidad de todas las edades reconocidas.

His photographs are as gritty as an intimate feeling. As Ruben Dario well said, when youth is gone, senseless tears appear, messy tears. And that’s because they are pure, innocent again. The solitude from old age and the uncertainty of youth are two moments in life that will be with us for the rest of our existence, along with the landscapes in which we inhabit. Matt Wilson remains still, in silence, standing in front of those landscapes, staring at the light that bathes them, until he manages to listen to Earth.

And then, he shoots, relieving a piece of his conscience, of his awareness of time. Since the first moment in which we saw Matt’s images, we were drawn into the cinematographic light of his snaps and the mundane feeling of all known ages.

Cuando viajo intento ir a la derecha justo cuando la mayoría gira a la izquierda, o al revés, quiero decir que siempre tomo la opción menos transitada, lo que me permite captar el ambiente del lugar en su propia esencia

Naciste en Tonbridge, UK y has vivido en Francia y en EE.UU. ¿cómo crees que han influenciado a tu fotografía cada uno de estos lugares? Crecer en UK durante el periodo en el que yo lo hice tuvo una incidencia directa en la forma en la que veo las cosas. Crecí con gente extremadamente creativa a mi alrededor y fueron una gran fuente de inspiración, significaron el inicio de mi viaje. Obviamente la cultura geográfica del lugar en el que uno reside tiene un efecto, ya sea consciente o inconsciente, así que indudablemente mi viaje creativo empezó en UK. Utilizas carretes caducados para darle una textura específica a tus fotos, además de usar la luz y realizar composiciones que definen un estilo muy propio, quizá sacado de otra época, ¿cómo definirías tu estilo o tus gustos fotográficos? Alguien muy respetado en la comunidad fotográfica me dijo recientemente que me consideraba un colorista, lo que me tomé como un gran cumplido. Últimamente he dedicado un tiempo maravilloso a explorar las posibilidades del film y de la emulsión. Antes, había un tipo de films que ofrecían un pattern con un grano muy específico, desgraciadamente estos ya no están disponibles, es ahí donde entran en juego los carretes caducados.

En muchas de tus fotos parece que hay siempre una escena a punto de ocurrir y tú has llegado en el momento justo, un segundo antes de que ocurra la acción (sobretodo en series como Khymer), ¿cómo consigues ese sentimiento que produce una cierta tensión en la quietud? Siempre que viajo intento girar a la derecha donde la mayoría de la gente giraría a la izquierda, o al revés, quiero decir que siempre tomo la opción menos transitada, lo que me permite captar el ambiente del lugar en su propia esencia. Para mí es importante adentrarme en el entorno y las circunstancias que lo generan, para no sentirme como un simple voyeur que “pasaba por allí”. Le dedico tiempo, a veces realmente mucho, al entorno que he elegido para empaparme del ambiente, creo que si eres consciente del lugar donde estás y de lo que estás haciendo allí, eso se evidencia en el trabajo final.

En This Place Called Home hay una gran soledad, de pensamiento y de vida, ¿sientes así los lugares que son para ti casa, los que han marcado tu infancia? Exacto, para realizar ‘This Place Called Home’ me inspiré originalmente en las personas con las que crecí.

Existen muchas capas en ese conjunto de obras. La edad es un gran tema, ya sea el ser joven o estar más cerca del final de tu vida que del principio, lo que puede provocar sentimientos muy solitarios. En un sentido, algunas de las imágenes de esta serie son mi forma de despedirme de algunas personas a las que he apreciado y con quienes posiblemente no tenga oportunidad de pasar más tiempo.

Sin utilizar flash consigues una iluminación completamente fotográfica, ¿las escenas de luz ocurren de forma espontánea o esperas pacientemente a que se produzcan para captar tus imágenes?

Intento disparar a horas muy específicas del día, aunque éstas cambian de manera drástica en función de la localización, pero generalmente se trata de pasar tiempo en el lugar, sin importar la hora del día que sea.

Tus imágenes muestran la carretera, escenas cotidianas, coches americanos de los 60, ¿qué es lo que te llama la atención para disparar? La forma en la que disparo es muy instintiva y está basada en una reacción emocional con respecto a la situación en la que me encuentro, ya sea motivada por el paisaje o por la compañía que tengo, mi trabajo no está tan basado en lo que veo como en lo que siento. ¿Cómo fue tu experiencia en Cuba en tu serie ‘No Hablar con Turistas’? ¿Cómo crees que cambiará el país ahora que se han avanzado las relaciones con EE. UU? El haber experimentado la Cuba que no se encuentra en las guías turísticas es como dejarse llevar por una montaña rusa emocional que te llevará a alturas extremas, pero, también a depresiones igual de fuertes, una verdadera anomalía. Los lugares en donde pasé la mayor parte del tiempo son los más oprimidos que Cuba puede ofrecer, equiparables con aquellos de pobreza extrema que se encuentran en cualquier otra parte del mundo. La vida es dura para el cubano promedio, especialmente para aquellos que viven lejos de las rutas turísticas, y, la verdad, dudo mucho que algo vaya a cambiar para ellos.

Acabas de tener una exposición con Anni Leppälä, fotógrafa que también admiramos, 80 Days of Summer / Stories of Identity, ¿Qué fotos has expuesto ahí? ¿En qué consiste la exposición? Se trata de una selección de algunos de mis primeros trabajos, principalmente imágenes de mi familia pertenecientes a la serie ‘This Place Called Home’. Toda la temática del festival explora la forma en la cual concebimos la identidad.

Carreteras, aventuras, soledad, ¿Qué significa para ti Walk Outside (nuestro monotema)? Ese sentido de libertad y de aventura. Tengo una mente muy curiosa y adoro pasar tiempo en medio de la nada explorando. ¿Has sentido tanta tristeza en el momento de disparar alguna de tus instantáneas que te has planteado dejar la fotografía? No, nunca. Viajar y experimentar emociones de todo tipo es la razón por la cual elegí la fotografía. ¿Recuerdas cuál fue la primera foto que hiciste? Tomaba fotos desde que era pequeño, utilizando la cámara de la familia, pero la primera foto real que recuerdo como adulto fue a la chica que me regaló mi primera cámara en New York a principios de los 90’s. ¿Necesitas implicarte emocionalmente con las personas o la escena para que imagen final tenga fuerza? Creo que una gran vinculación con la persona o la localización a fotografiar activa una sensibilidad especial, si lo que vamos a fotografiar nos toca la fibra es más fácil que tenga calidad. ¿Cuáles son tus próximos proyectos? Seguiré trabajando en el proyecto STATESIDE que realizo en US, continuaré durante todo el 2016 hasta que considere que ha alcanzado todo su potencial. Se está gestando además un nuevo proyecto en Lituania y pasaré allí un mes en primavera para empezarlo.

Whenever I travel I tend to turn right when most would turn left, or vice versa, meaning I’ll always take the road less traveled, this tends to lead you to places that carry an ambiance all of their own.

You were born in Tonbridge, UK, and have lived in places like France and The United States. How do you think these places have influenced your photographic style? Growing up in the UK in the period that I did certainly had an indelible effect on how I look at things, I also grew up around extremely creative people that were a huge inspiration, which is where for me the journey began. Obviously, the geographical culture where one resides has an effect, whether if it is conscious or subconsciously, but I think the core of how I make my work began in the UK. You work with expired film in order to give your images a specific texture, besides using the light and creating compositions that define a very personal style, like from another time. How would you define your style or photographic taste? Someone very well respected within the photography community recently told me that he considered me a colorist, which I took as a huge compliment.

Early on I spent a great deal of time exploring the possibilities of film and emulsion. Back then, there were films that had very specific grain patterns that are sadly no longer available, which is where the expired film comes into play.

In many of your pictures it seems like there’s something about to happen and you have arrived at the precise moment to capture it, just a second before everything unfolds (specially in the series ‘Khymer’). How do you achieve that feeling of tension within the stillness of the frame? Whenever I travel I tend to turn right where most people would turn left, or vice versa, meaning I’ll always take the road less traveled, this tends to lead you to places that carry an ambiance all of their own. It’s important for me to immerse myself within my surroundings and circumstance in order to avoid simply being a voyeur passing through. I spend time, sometimes a great deal of time, within the environments that I choose to make work, and I think if you’re conscious of where you are and what you’re doing it will naturally be evident in the work.

In ‘This Place Called Home’ a great solitude is conveyed; is like this; is like how the places you call home, those that were significant for you throughout your childhood, make you feel?

Exactly, ‘This Place Called Home’ was originally inspired by the people that I grew up with. There are many layers to that body of work. Age is a huge theme, whether it is youth or being closer to the end of your life than the beginning, and those can be very solitary feelings. In a sense, some of the images in that series are a last goodbye to people that I cherished and knew could be the very last time we’d spend together.

Without using a flash you manage to achieve a complete photographic illumination. Do the scenes with light just happen spontaneously or do you wait patiently for them to happen in order to shoot? I tend to shoot at very specific times of the day, although it changes drastically within the geographical location, but moreover it’s simply about spending time regardless of the time of day.

Your images depict the road, daily scenes, American vehicles from the sixties, what grabs your attention when you shoot?

The way I shoot is very instinctual and based upon an emotional reaction to a situation, whether it’s within a landscape or with company that I keep, and so, the work is not so much based on what I see but what I feel.

How was your experience in Cuba while working on the series ‘No Hablar con Touristas’? In which ways do you think there will be a change after the recent advances there have been in the relations between Cuba and The United States? To experience the Cuba that is not found amongst the pages of guidebooks is to surrender to an emotional rollercoaster that will take you to extreme highs and to equally extreme lows, a true anomaly. The areas where I spend time in there are the most downtrodden that Cuba has to offer and rival those of extreme poverty found anywhere else in the world. Life is hard for the average Cuban, especially those that inhabit the areas outside the tourist route and I doubt much will change for them.

You just had an exhibition with Anni Leppälä - another photographer that we admire – 80 Days of Summer / Stories of Identity.

Which pictures are being exhibited? What is the exhibition about?

It’s a selection of some very early works, mainly of my family from the series “This Place Called Home”. The entire theme of the festival explores how we perceive identity.

Roads, adventures, solitude, what does it mean to you to Walk Outside – which is this issue’s theme -? The sense of freedom and adventure, I’m naturally of a curious mind and love to be out in the middle of nowhere exploring.

Have you ever felt so sad when shooting a photograph that you thought about quitting photography for good? No, never. Travelling, experiencing a broad range of emotion for me is the reason I choose to do this.

Do you remember the first photograph you shoot? I took snapshots as a kid growing up with the family camera but the first real conscious photograph that I took as an adult would have been of the girl that gave me my first camera in New York in the early 90’s.

Is it necessary for you to establish an emotional link with the subjects, scenes or locations in order to have a final image with the adequate strength? I think the more intimate the relationship with the subject or the more the location strikes a chord within, then, hopefully, the image itself will posses a certain quality.

Can you tell us about your next projects? The US project “STATESIDE” is ongoing, I’m working on it right now and will continue through 2016, continuing on until I think it has reached it’s full potential. Also a new project in Lithuania is in its early stages where I will spend a month in Spring 2016 starting a new body of work.

AITOR LARA SHOOTING IN TRANCE

La calle fue su escuela y la fotografía, un trampolín al mundo. Una excusa para salir de España y conocer caras y comunidades remotas. Una especie de camino espiritual en blanco y negro cargado de magia, misterios y silencios. Aitor Lara (Baracaldo, Vizcaya, 1974) retrata lugares inhóspitos y personajes olvidados por la sociedad con su paleta de grises y su mirada penetrante. El instinto es la quilla que le guía a la hora de surcar mares desconocidos en busca de calles castigadas por la penumbra.

The streets were his school and photography, his trampoline towards the world: an excuse to leave Spain and discover new faces and distant communities, like some kind of spiritual journey in black and white, charged with magic, mysteries and silences.

¿Cuándo nace tu interés por documentar mundos lejanos, tribus perdidas y ciudades fantasma? Yo me tiro a la calle y encuentro de todo. En cuanto sales al mundo te das cuenta de que existen mil caras y maneras de ser. El mundo indígena por ejemplo; tal vez a través de nuestros ojos europeos parece pobre, pero en realidad no es pobreza, es gente que vive, que tiene su casa de madera, y puede que no coma comida tan elaborada, pero no por eso es pobre. Nosotros creemos que la nuestra es la única manera de estar en el mundo, pero si sales fuera te das cuenta de que no es así.

humanista y trabaja por la dignidad. Uno no es solo, es porque están los demás. Mi fotografía es un tributo a los demás. Nunca he hecho una fotografía por dinero, o nunca he sido consciente de ello. Tampoco tengo un perfil de fotoperiodista comprometido con la realidad que busca dar voz a los más desfavorecidos. El compromiso es con uno mismo, el compromiso es ser honesto y tener la conciencia tranquila. En ese sentido creo que estoy lleno de errores pero poco prostituido precisamente por ese perfil independiente que siempre he mantenido.

Háblame de Detroit, donde realizaste tu último trabajo, ‘Slamming Detroit’… Detroit vive un momento muy interesante. Ya ha caído la bomba que lo destrozó todo y hay como una nueva etapa sobre la ruina. La fase cero forma parte del pasado, ahora está en la fase 0,1 después de la hecatombe. Es un ejemplo de como el sistema capitalista exacerbado acabó sin piedad con una ciudad y con un estado que está arruinado. La reacción es a nivel de comunidad, vas viendo como los barrios devastados afloran y surgen de los escombros a nivel vecinal. Además hay un proceso actual de brókers, que están especulando con la miseria, gente que compra lo que dentro de 20 años será una ciudad que vuelva a funcionar. También hay una nueva inmigración a la que se le da papeles para que habiten esos suelos abandonados. Los barrios ardieron para rescatar los metales y los cobres de las casas, para cobrar seguros, y ahora, los propios ciudadanos de Detroit viven y luchan por una de las grandes ciudades del siglo XX, la Motor City, que hoy no es nada. Hay dignidad en las personas y un aire fantasmagórico en las calles.

¿Por qué en blanco y negro? Cuando empecé a hacer fotografía me vi rodeado de amigos que hacían blanco y negro, fueron mis referencias. Además tiene ese punto añejo de las sales de plata. Eliges un camino y avanzas. En aquel entonces el blanco y negro era un carrete Kodak Tri-X con su revelador D-76, las ampliadoras y los papeles de fibra baritados de Ilford. Era un sistema absolutamente calibrado, establecido y que funcionaba genial antes de que entrara la era digital.

Tengo solo dos trabajos a los que he dado tratamiento de color, uno hecho en Burkina Faso sobre sociedades secretas de máscaras y otro realizado hace poco en una selva virgen de Camerún, centrado en las comunidades pigmeas del bosque, los Baka.

¿Cómo aprendes a moverte por esos ambientes? Cuando tenía 20 años estábamos mucho en la calle. Es una pulsión por descubrir lugares, gente, y aprender adentrándome en mundos desconocidos. Es pura pasión por la aventura, un motor interno. Era una excusa para salir de España y viajar. Tiene que ver con la música, la religión, paisajes y atmósferas, desigualdades sociales, maneras completamente distintas de entender la realidad, misterios, magias y silencios. ¿Cómo ha evolucionado tu mirada desde Mexica, uno de tus primeros trabajos, hasta Slamming Detroit?

Acabo de hacer un libro PhotoBolsillo que recopila fotografías mías. Es una reflexión sobre mi trabajo que trata la cuestión de cómo el fotógrafo, el autor, en sus primeros años tiene una mirada cándida con una poesía más virginal, y luego, con el tiempo, se vuelve mucho más perverso en todo lo que hace. El niño se ha convertido en una especie de hombre-bestia. Te haces adulto y aunque conservas la curiosidad infalntil tienes otra mirada sobre la realidad.

Algunos fotógrafos dicen que en cada fotografía hay un autorretrato de uno mismo, ¿sucede con tus imágenes? Cada fotografía es un poco la huella de lo que somos. Sí que hay una captación de lo que uno proyecta y con lo que se empatiza. Mi fotografía es

¿Qué papel juega el Photoshop en tus imágenes? Lo uso mucho. No soy de los que reniegan. He pasado muchos años positivando en laboratorio, tengo el concepto, por eso a mí el photoshop no se me escapa, no sobre-ilumino, yo empasto negros y quemo blancos. La clave no es iluminarlo todo, eso no es real. Pasa en el cine de ahora, todo está iluminado y es aburridísimo, lo afean, no te lo crees porque no es natural. ¿De qué manera te afecta lo que ves? Mucho. Me afecta física, psíquica y emocionalmente. Es información que integras al disco duro, un disco duro virgen en el que grabas y no se olvida nunca. Todas las fotos son experiencias vitales, es un diálogo con los otros, con el mundo, y ese diálogo te va construyendo. Son conceptos fundamentales: es una ética, una moral, una estética, y al final, la fotografía es un camino espiritual. ¿Disparas con el corazón o con la cabeza al mismo tiempo? Es un trance, es instinto. ¿Qué tema todavía no has tratado y te gustaría documentar? Prefiero no decirlo, la gente copia ideas.

La fotografía, ¿analógica o digital? Estoy con las dos.

Te has de quedar con una… Me hago un favor si digo analógica. ¿Qué es para ti callejear? Es una actitud que te hace compartir de manera libre. La fotografía se aprende en la calle.

When was your interest to document remote lands, lost tribes and ghost towns born? I throw myself to the streets and there is where I find everything. As soon as you go out, to the world, you realize there are thousands of faces and personalities. The indigenous world, for example; maybe, through our European eyes it might seem poor, but actually it’s not poverty, they are alive, they have their wooden houses, and they might not eat elaborated meals, but because of that it doesn’t mean that they are poor. We tend to believe our way is the only way to live in this world, but if you go outside you’ll understand it’s not like that.

Tell us about Detroit, since not long ago you were there working on your last project, ‘Slamming Detroit’… Detroit is going through a very interesting time. The bomb that destroyed everything has landed and there is a new era being born over the ruins. Phase zero is part of the past, now it’s phase 0,1, after the hecatomb. Detroit is the example of how the exacerbated capitalist system can destroy mercilessly a city and a state and leave them ruined. The reactions are coming from the communities; you can see how the devastated neighborhoods are flourishing again from the debris. On top of that, there’s a group of brokers who are speculating with the misery people are suffering, they are buying right now what in 20 years will be a working city again. There’s also a new immigration being legalized, leading them to inhabit the abandoned territories. The neighborhoods were burned to pieces in order to rescue the metals and the copper from the houses, to collect insurances, and now, even the citizens of Detroit live and fight for one of the biggest cities of the 20th Century, the Motor City, which is nothing nowadays. There is dignity in the people and a ghostly scent on the streets.

How did you learn to move in scenarios like that?

When I was 20 years old I used to spend a lot of time on the streets. The streets offer you a drive to get to know places, people and learn by going further into unknown worlds. It’s a raw passion for adventure, my internal ambition. The streets were an excuse to leave Spain and travel. It has to do with music, religion, landscapes and atmospheres, social inequalities, different ways to understand reality, mysteries, magic and silences.

How has your perception changed all the way from ‘Mexica’ (one of your first projects) up to ‘Slamming Detroit’? I just made a photographic pocketbook gathering some of my works. On it I carry out a reflection about my world, focusing on the dilemma of how the photographer, the author, during its initial years has a more candid view on the world; its poetry is more virginal. Then, as time passes by, that view turns more perverse and that becomes clear in everything he does. The child has turned into some kind of man-beast. As you grow up and become an adult you maintain the curiosity of the child, but you have another view on reality.

Some photographers say that in each of their photographs there is a portrait of themselves. Is that present in your work? Each photograph is some kind of blueprint of who or what we are, so yes, in a way,

what we project and with what we empathize is present in our photographs. Mi photography is humanistic and works in favor of dignity. One is not by itself; one is because there are others. My photography is a tribute to the others. I’ve never done a photograph for money, or at least, I’ve never been conscious of it. As well, my profile is not the one of a photojournalist who is committed to reality in order to give a voice to the ones in disadvantage. The commitment I have is to myself, a commitment to be honest and have peace of mind. In that sense, I believe I’m full of flaws but I haven’t sold myself, precisely because of that independent profile I have always tried to maintain.

Why black and white? When I started photographing, the people around me used to work in black and white, and they became my referents. Besides, it has that vintage look very characteristic from the silver salts. When you pick a road, you move forward. Back then, black and white was the Kodak Tri-X film with its D-76 developer, the enlargers and the Ilford fiber based papers. It was a calibrated system, established and that worked perfectly before the digital era came along. I’ve only worked a couple of times using color, the first was during a project I did in Burkina Faso about masked secret societies and the second was not long ago in a pristine jungle in Cameroon, focusing on the pigmies communities of the forest, the Baka.

What role plays Photoshop in your images? I use it frequently. I don’t tend to deny things. I have spent many years working in the darkroom, I know the concept, that’s why I don’t over-use Photoshop: I don’t illuminate excessively, I keep a clean black and a clean white. It’s not about illuminating the whole thing, that’s not real. It happens on today’s cinema, everything is illuminated and it’s so boring, they ruin it, you don’t believe it because it’s not natural.

In which way you feel affected by what you see?

It affects me a lot, in a physical, psychic and emotional way. It’s information that you add to the hard drive, an intact hard drive where you store and never forget. All photographs are vital experiences, they’re a dialogue with others, with the world, and that dialogue builds you up, a dialogue based on fundamental concepts: ethics, morals, aesthetics, at the end, photography is a spiritual path.

Do you shoot with your heart or with your head at the same time? It’s a trance, I work by instinct.

Which subject you still haven’t captured and would like to document? I rather not say; people tend to copy ideas.

Photography: analog or digital? Both. I use them both.

If you had to chose one… I’m doing myself a favor if I say analog.

What does it mean to you to meander? It’s an attitude that allows you to share freely. Photography is learnt on the streets.

Desde sus comienzos, en la década de los setenta, Martin Parr ha mostrado una mirada diferente al resto de su generación. Sus perspectivas inusuales, los motivos extraños de sus composiciones y, ya en los 80s, el uso de colores chocantes, han hecho únicos e inusuales todos y cada uno de sus trabajos. Su mirada es tan “normal”, tan de clase media, como asegura él, que paradójicamente siempre ha resultado sorprendente a todo aquel que se ha cruzado con ella. Quizás es por eso que hasta cuando entró en la agencia Magnum, allá por 1994, se sintió distinto. “Los fotógrafos de Magnum son vistos como cruzados que van a lugares donde hay hambre y guerra. Yo voy y vengo de la esquina al supermercado porque esta es, para mí, la línea del frente”, afirmó. Hoy en día, con más de 300 exposiciones, 80 publicaciones y prestigiosos premios a sus espaldas, Martin sigue reflejando en sus trabajos esa mirada “normal” que siempre descubre algo diferente en la cotidianidad de un lunes de trabajo o de una soleada tarde de vacaciones. Sus imágenes hablan mucho más que sus palabras, estructuradas en frases cortas y concisas, sin rodeos. Hablamos con él, un domingo en la mañana, mientras la lluvia caía en Gran Bretaña.

Since his beginnings, throughout the seventies, Martin Parr’s perspective has not been aligned to the one portrayed by his generation.

His viewpoint is unusual, his motifs and compositions strange and, since the eighties, the use he gives to colour is shocking, making each and every one of his works unique and remarkable. The way he looks at the world is so “normal”, so middle class, as he says, that ironically, he has surprised everyone that has crossed his path. Maybe, that’s why when he entered the Magnum Agency, in 1994, he felt so different from all the other photographers that were there. “Magnum photographers were meant to go out as a crusade, to places like famine and war and I went out and went round the corner to the local supermarket because this to me is the front line.”

Nowadays, with over than 300 exhibitions, 80 publications and renowned prices along his trajectory, Martin keeps on portraying that “normal” perspective in all his works, discovering each time something different in the daily routine of a Monday in the office or a holiday’s afternoon. His pictures talk way more than his words, organized in short and direct sentences, plain and blunt. We had the chance to talk to him, during a Sunday morning, while it rained in Great Britain.

Has contado en más de una ocasión que tu pasión por la fotografía viene de tu abuelo, ¿cómo recuerdas esa época? La recuerdo de una manera bastante vaga en realidad. Salíamos a fotografiar en excursiones de un día para luego regresar a revelar los rollos de película, hacer impresiones… Era algo que me emocionaba mucho.

Después de tus estudios en el Manchester Polytechnic te decidiste por la fotografía de documental social. ¿Cómo fue ese proceso?

Mientras estuve en la universidad no me enfoqué en la fotografía de documental social como tal, pero siempre estuve documentando el mundo en el cual vivimos. Lo que sucedió fue más bien una transición orgánica. Este proceso se inició mientras estudiaba en la universidad, pero allí no lo fomentaban, por lo cual no tuve mucha oportunidad de desarrollarlo a fondo, luego, cuando me fui, empecé a concentrarme más y más en ello.

Tu trabajo presenta características del street pohotography, la fotografía artística, el fotoperiodismo, el ensayo... ¿Crees que es esta mezcla, junto a la ironía y tu sentido del humor, lo que le da ese toque tan personal y único? Supongo, es parte de mi personalidad, son mis intereses y cómo los expreso, así que, como con todos los fotógrafos, puedes ver mi personalidad en mis fotografías.

En los años 70 realizaste proyectos como “Home Sweet Home”, “Love Cubes” o “June Street”, en los que la familia, la clase obrera y lo cotidiano eran los protagonistas absolutos. ¿Qué fue lo que más te enamoró durante todo el proceso para continuar realizando este tipo de fotografía? En realidad, siempre me ha gustado llevar a cabo y desarrollar diferentes ideas, y aquella era en cierta manera conceptual, un aspecto de mi trabajo que siempre intento explorar, así que probablemente tras ver ese resultado decidí mantenerme en esa línea hasta ahora.

En 1982 tu obra dio un vuelco con el paso al color y el retrato de la época Thatcher. ¿Fue quizás esta la etapa más politizada de tu fotografía? Fue muy emocionante descubrir el color y hacer cosas nuevas, tener una cámara nueva y ver qué era posible, así que sí, fue un momento muy especial para mí, y ese es probablemente mi trabajo con mayor reconocimiento.

Pero sin duda, “The Last Resort” en 1986 fue el trabajo que marcó un nuevo camino en tu trayectoria. En él captas a la clase obrera británica durante sus vacaciones en New Brighton Beach con una visión alejada de los fotógrafos humanistas que dominaban el género en ese entonces. ¿Te sorprendiste incluso a ti mismo con el resultado final de la serie, o era desde un inicio lo que esperabas? Cuando empecé la serie en Liverpool no mucha gente se interesó por ella, porque no conocían en realidad lo que sucedía allí. Fue cuando me referí al sur que empezaron las reacciones, las cuales fueron en parte negativas y controversiales. Aunque cuando empecé a compartir el proyecto en el extranjero no hubo ningún problema. Yo nunca busqué la controversia, simplemente quería sacar la serie, exponerla, es decir; yo sabía que era un trabajo excitante, pues yo lo había hecho, sólo quería encontrar la manera de publicar la serie a manera de libro, y eso fue lo que sucedió.

Después de “The Last Resort” has recorrido medio mundo para retratar a gente de distintas culturas durante sus vacaciones. ¿Es esa relajación de la época estival, ese dejarse llevar y ser realmente uno mismo lo que te atrajo a este tema? El ocio ha sido una temática principal en mi trabajo, lo ha sido en el Reino Unido, y alrededor del mundo. El estar en la playa es parte de eso, y todo aquello que dices es intrínseco a la temática en general.

Como dices, la playa es uno de los lugares por excelencia de tus retratos. En ella nos mostramos por fuera, ¿crees que también por dentro? No, creo que simplemente muestra cómo nos vemos por fuera. No voy a hacer afirmaciones diciendo cómo son las personas en su interior a través de mis fotografías, eso me parece un poco oscuro la verdad.

El ocio, el consumo y la comunicación son los conceptos que has estado explorando a lo largo de tus viajes por el mundo. ¿Crees que hay particularidades entre unos países y otros, o está todo tan globalizado que son mínimas? Bueno, cada vez la globalización es mayor, y al mismo tiempo, siempre intento resaltar esas inusuales diferencias, especialmente en cosas como lo que la gente hace en la playa, pero sí, lo que dices es parcialmente cierto.

En tu obra hay además un cierto aspecto antropológico, ¿cuáles crees que son los cambios más significativos que han sucedido en la sociedad desde tus inicios? Bueno, creo que nos hemos vuelto más emocionales, sabes, más americanizados, en todo el mundo. Tenemos Internet, tenemos la fotografía digital, todo esto ha producido un gran impacto en el mundo de la fotografía.

No crees que ese impacto tecnológico, por el contrario, nos ha llevado a ser menos sensibles? Hasta cierto punto ahora todo es o se ve igual. Cuando sales de viaje o de tour, las personas no interactúan entre ellas, están muy ocupados tomando fotos, no se preocupan por relacionarse los unos a los otros, ese es un aspecto negativo de la tecnología.

Te has ido renovando con el paso del tiempo: publicidad, moda, cortos, películas, edición de libros..., ¿qué será lo próximo?

On past interviews, you’ve said more than once that your passion for photography comes from your grandfather. How do you remember that time? Pretty vaguely actually. I do remember going out there, going out shooting, going on day trips together, coming back, processing the film, making prints and being very excited.

After your studies at the Manchester Polytechnic you decided to focus on the social documentary photography. How was that process? While being at college I wasn’t focusing on social documentary photography per se, I was just recording the world that we live in.

It was more of an organic transition. This process started happening during college, but there they didn’t encourage it, so I didn’t have that much opportunity. Afterwards, when I left, I started to get more and more into it.

Your images present characteristics from street photography, artistic photography, photojournalism, the essay... Do you think it’s this mixture, along with the irony and your sense of humour, which gives that personal and unique touch to your work? I guess, you know, it’s part of my personality, it’s my interests and how I express them, so notably, with all photographers, you can see their own personality on their photographs.

In the 70’s you made works like “Home Sweet Home”, “Love Cubes” or “June Street”. In them, the family, the working classes and the ordinary were the absolute protagonists. What did you liked the most throughout this process in order to continue exploring this type of photography? Well, I mean, I just like doing different ideas, and they were just sort of partly conceptual, and I’ve always explored the conceptual side of my work, so that’s probably the outset I had then and I keep now.

In 1982 your work turns around over to colour and the portraits of the Thatcher era. Was it perhaps the most politicized period in your photography? Well it was very exciting discovering colour and making new things, having a new camera, and seeing what was possible, so yes, it was a very exciting time, and that is still probably my best known work.

But undoubtedly “The Last Resort” in 1986 was the work that marked a new path in your career. In it you catch the British working class during their holidays in New Brighton Beach with a remote view from the humanist photographers who then dominated the genre. Were you surprised with the outcome of the series, or since the beginning it was what you expected? I started the work off in Liverpool and no one really thought much of it, because people didn’t really know what is like, it was when I said down south when the response started to come, which it was quite negative or controversial, but when I shared it abroad there wasn’t a problem. I didn’t aim for controversy, I just aimed to get it out, I mean, I knew it was exciting, I had done it, but I just wanted to find the way to publish it as a book and that’s what happened.

El mono-tema de esta edición es Walk Outside, ¿cuándo sales a caminar? ¿Cuándo sientes la necesidad de salir para estar solo contigo mismo? Me gusta caminar, normalmente salgo a caminar los domingos en la mañana, pero hoy está lloviendo, como es costumbre en Gran Bretaña. Pero cuando lo hago, disfruto relajándome, contemplando el paisaje. Acabo de regresar de Escocia, donde caminé muchísimo. ¿Y llevas tu cámara contigo en estas caminatas?

No, no, para nada.

After “The Last Resort” you’ve travelled around the world to portray people from different cultures during their holidays. Is that relaxation of the summer, that letting go and really being yourself, what attracted you to this topic? Leisure has been my main subject, so I had done that both in the U.K., I’ve done it around the world, so being on the beach is just part of that, it was just part of the topic.

As you say, the beach is a common place in your photographs. It shows the subjects from an outside perspective, but do you think that it also depicts them from the inside? No, I think it just shows what the look like, I’m not gonna make claims and tell you what people are like on the inside, that seems a little dark really.

Leisure, consumption and communication are the concepts that you have been exploring throughout your travels around the world. Do you think that there are peculiarities between one country and another, or it is all so globalized that these are minimal? Well, we get more and more gobalized and at the same time I try to highlight this unusual differences, specially on something like what people do on the beach, but yes, I think what you say is partially right.

In your work there is a certain anthropological aspect. Which do you consider have been the most significant changes in society since your beginnings? Well I guess we have become more emotionalized, you know, we’ve become more Americanized all over the world, we have the internet, we have digital photography, all this have produced a big impact on the world of photography.

Don’t you think that technological impact, on the other side, has made us less sensitive? Well, to a certain extent everything looks the same. Now, when you go to a tour or something like that, people won’t talk between themselves, they’re busy taking photos, not being engaged in relating between them, and that’s a downside to this technology.

You are constantly redefining yourself with the passage of time: advertising, fashion, shorts, films, books publishing... What’s next? More books and I’m creating a big show about all the current photographers that come to Brittan to photograph.

This issues topic is called Walk Outside, when do you walk outside? When do you need to go to the exteriors to be by yourself? I like walking, normally I have a walk on Sunday morning but today is raining, as usual here in Britain, so I haven’t been out. But when I do I just enjoy relaxing, looking at the scenery, walking out. I just came back from Scotland where I did a lot of walking.

And you always carry your camera with you on these walks? No, no, not at all.

Estamos programados para rechazar lo impredecible. Todo tiene que estar planeado dentro de esa gran cuadrícula llamada sociedad, que con sus convencionalismos anula nuestra capacidad crítica. Vemos solo lo que nos ponen delante, sin leer entre líneas, sin ir más allá. Por eso, por ejemplo, no logramos apreciar sin prejuicios conceptos como el erotismo. Nos tienen que reeducar para ello. Mike Spears es uno de estos fotógrafos que toma la realidad y la transforma en pura transgresión. Sin artificios, simplemente mirándola con los ojos adecuados, reeducados. Así, en su universo aprendemos que lo erótico no siempre tiene que ver con un desnudo, y que lo cotidiano puede ser pura provocación. Ha llegado la hora de romper con lo impuesto y ver la vida con otros ojos.

We’ve been wired to reject what’s unpredictable. Everything has to be planned within that huge grid called society, which, with its conventionalisms, overturns our capacity to discern and analyze, to be critic. We can only see what’s thrown right in front of our eyes; we no longer read between lines, we stopped going further. That’s why, for example, we are not able to appreciate, without prejudices, concepts like eroticism. We must be reeducated in order to achieve that. Mike Spears is one of those photographers that takes reality and transforms it into pure transgression. No artifices, simply looking at it through the adequate eyes, reeducated eyes. That’s why, in his universe we learn that what’s erotic has not always to do with nudes, and everyday life can be filled with provocation. The time has come to break what has been imposed and see life through new eyes.

¿Cómo te iniciaste en la fotografía? A través del skateboarding, principalmente. Quería tomar fotos de mis amigos haciendo ollies grandes. Ahora tengo 44 años.

También solía trabajar mucho con bandas. Así que la música y el skate fueron lo que me hicieron fotografiar en un inicio. Tomé prestada la Olympus OM1 de mi padre cuando partí a la universidad y no he parado de disparar en 35mm desde entonces.

Naciste en Indiana, creciste en Puerto Rico, estudiaste en Boston y ahora vives en Brooklyn. ¿Cómo todas esas experiencias de vida han influido en tu trabajo como fotógrafo? Aprendí español bastante bien. Esto me ha ayudado a comunicarme con más gente. Probablemente me ha permitido salir de la “zona de confort” correspondiente a la sociedad blanca americana. Hago mi mejor trabajo cuando simplemente estoy feliz tomando fotos de vacaciones.

Dejando que el mundo se revele. He vivido en la ciudad de Nueva York y Puerto Rico, por lo que no me intimidan muchas cosas, y me interesa cuándo puedo fotografiar y cuándo no.

Algunas personas creen que el erotismo siempre tiene que ver con los desnudos y el sexo. ¿Estás de acuerdo con esto? ¿Qué significa este concepto para ti? No estoy del todo de acuerdo. En mi trabajo tiendo a ser objetivo y romántico. Me gusta fotografiar de una manera atrevida y directa. Espero una reacción psicológica visceral de la audiencia. Cuando una imagen toma un significado nuevo pasa a ser erótica.

En tu opinión, ¿es la realidad algo provocativa, así tal como es? La realidad es lo más provocativo, todo lo demás es ficción o hiper real.

En tus trabajos intentas combatir contra los convencionalismos de la sociedad. ¿Por qué crees que tus imágenes son tan sugestivas? Así es, en mis fotografías existe un espíritu punk. Sugiero muchas cosas, eso es seguro. ¿Sueles trabajar con modelos o novias?¿Es más fácil fotografiar desnudos con alguien con quien tienes este tipo de intimidad o es más difícil? Novias, luego modelos y luego novias otra vez, últimamente. Creo

que es más fácil fotografiar desnudos con alguien con quien eres cercano. A menos que sea una buena modelo o trabajéis bien juntos, claro. Si estás fotografiando a una novia, amante o musa, ella debe querer ser fotografiada. O al menos no debe importarle. Luego te puedes relajar y observar.

Tienes mucha actividad en Tumblr. ¿Crees que esta herramienta ayuda a los nuevos artistas para que sean vistos o esta repentina exposición pública es una desventaja? Suelo usar Tumblr porque allí se juzga menos que en Instagram (risas). Lo utilizo para saber con qué imágenes reacciona la gente. Me gusta subir imágenes en tamaño completo, de la manera en la cual fueron fotografiadas con la cámara. El formato cuadrado de Instagram a veces complica esto. Tumblr funciona para algunos artistas y para otros no. Soy bastante cínico con respecto a él y a Instagram. ¿Males necesarios? ¿Cuál es tu parte favorita de todo el proceso de tomar fotos? La emoción cuando estás capturando algo que sabes que es bueno. La anticipación de tener la película de regreso. Las personas que conoces y con las cuales creas un lazo. Los lugares que conoces y documentas. Los accidentes felices. ¿Y la peor? El precio de trabajar con película. El aspecto comercial tras las fotos. Las personas en algunos casos. Las redes sociales. ¿Cómo te gustaría ser recordado como artista? Si se me recuerda del todo, será un honor. Trabajando por ser recordado. Dejando muchos fósiles en mi camino.

Nuestro monotema esta edición es Walk Outside. ¿A dónde te gusta ir cuando necesitas un poco de espacio o aire libre? Vivo frente al mar en Brooklyn. Me gusta caminar por mi barrio y admirar la audacia de Nueva York. Está muy bien construida, pero al mismo tiempo se está comenzando a desmoronar. También me gusta caminar por el barrio chino. Me inspira. ¿Qué sigue para Mike Spears? Quiero publicar más libros fotográficos. Ayudadme a publicar una revista con fotografías de mi hermosa novia Saray.

How did you get into photography? Through skateboarding mainly. I wanted to take pictures of my friends doing big ollies. Now, I am 44. I also used to shoot a lot of band photography. So music and skateboarding made me want to photograph at first, mostly. I borrowed my father’s Olympus OM1 when I went off to university and haven’t stopped shooting 35mm film since.

You were born in Indiana, raised in Puerto Rico, studied in Boston and now you live in Brooklyn.

How has all this life experience influenced your work as a photographer? I learned Spanish well.

This has allowed me to communicate with more people. It probably allows me to leave the white American “comfort zone” more easily. I do my best work when I’m just happy snapping on vacations or holidays. Letting the world unravel. Having lived in New York City and Puerto Rico, I am not intimidated by much and I’m keen on when to shoot and when not to.

Some people think that eroticism always has to do with nudes and sex. Do you agree? What does this concept means to you? I don’t agree completely.

I tend to objectify and romanticize in my work. I like photographing in a bold direct way. I want a visceral psychological reaction from viewers. When an image takes on new meaning, it’s erotic.

In your opinion, is reality something provocative just the way it is? Reality is the most provocative; everything else is fiction or hyper real.

In your body of work you try to f ight against society’s conventionalisms. Why do you think that your images look so suggestive? There’s a punk spirit to my photos, yes. I suggest many things for sure.

Do you normally shoot models or girlfriends? Is it easier to shoot a nude with someone with whom you have this kind of intimacy or is it more difficult?

I started shooting girlfriends, then models and now girlfriends again, lately. I think it’s easier to shoot

someone nude when you’re closer, unless she is a good model or you work well together, of course. If you are shooting a girlfriend, lover or muse, she has to want to be photographed, or at least not mind it. Then you can relax and observe.

You are pretty active on Tumblr. Do you think that this tool helps new artists to be seen or is it a handicap because of the sudden public exposure? I post often on Tumblr because it’s less judgmental than Instagram (laughs). I use it to see what images people react to. I like posting images full size, the way they were shot with the camera. Instagram’s square format makes that challenging sometimes. Tumblr works for some artists and it doesn’t for others. I am cynical about it and Instagram at this point. Necessary evils?

What is your favorite part of the whole process of taking photos? The rush when shooting something you know is good. The anticipation of getting the film back. The people you meet and bond with. The places you see and document. The happy accidents.

And the worst parts? The cost of shooting in film. The business side of photography. People, sometimes. Social networking.

As an artist, how would you like to be remembered?

If I’m remembered at all, it would be an honor. Working on being remembered. Leaving many fossils behind.

Our topic for this issue of our magazine is WALK OUTSIDE. Where do you like to go when you need some space or fresh air? I live on the waterfront in Brooklyn. I like going for walks around my neighborhood and admiring the audacity of the city. It’s pretty built up and starting to crumble as well. I also like walking around Chinatown. It inspires me.

What’s next for Mike Spears? I want to publish more photo books. Help me publish a zine of photographs of my beautiful girlfriend Saray.

CHRISTIAN LAGATA UP AROUND THE BEND T: VICKY NAVARRO

En 1953 se firmaron bajo la dictadura de Franco unos acuerdos con los que España permitía a los EEUU instalar en su territorio cuatro bases militares norteamericanas. Una de ellas fue la aeronaval de Rota que, a día de hoy, es el principal escudo antimisil de Europa. Christian Lagata, aunque es bastante más joven, lo vivió en primera persona. En 1973 sus padres alquilaron una casita en la playa, junto a la valla de la base y, desde entonces, esa valla formó parte de su día a día. A los 15 años, consiguió cruzarla gracias a la madre de un amigo y lo que vio allí le impactó tanto que sintió la necesidad de documentarlo. Ese pequeño universo yanqui en pleno Cádiz influyó sobre las comunidades colindantes, que se adaptaron y aprendieron a convivir con ello hasta que nació una especie de Norteamérica andaluza muy curiosa.

Las últimas novedades musicales y coches de importación americanos, que en el resto de España era impensable escuchar o ver, rondaban por allí como si nada. Pero entrar en la base acompañado de una cámara de fotos no fue tan fácil. Christian nos cuenta cómo llevó a cabo su proyecto ‘Up around the bend’, ahora convertido en un libro.

In 1953, under the dictatorship of Francisco Franco, a number of agreements were signed between Spain and The United States, where the first allowed the latter to install four military bases in its territory. One of them was the Naval Station Rota, which nowadays is the main European missile defense.

Christian Lagata experienced it all at first hand, though he was born several years later. In 1973, his parents rented a small house by the beach, right next to the fence that guarded the base, since then, that fence has been part of his life and day-to-day reality. When he was fifteen he managed to cross it, thanks to one of his friend’s mother, and what he saw there caused him a great impression, to the point he felt the necessity of documenting it. That small American universe right in the middle of Cadiz had a great influence on its neighbors, who adapted and learned to live with it; with the passage of time a very curious Andalusian North America was conceived. There, as opposed to the rest of Spain, you could come across the latest music hits or see on the streets American cars, as if it was a common thing. But going into the base with a camera wasn’t that easy. We talked with Christian and he explained to us how he developed his project ‘Up around the bend’, now turned into a book.

¿Cuándo entraste por primera vez en la base naval de Rota y cómo lo hiciste? Realmente tardé bastante en entrar por primera vez a la Base, tendría unos 15 años y fue gracias a un amigo, hijo de un alto cargo militar, y su madre. Teníamos que entrar con ella porque la obligaban a hacerse responsable de nosotros. Recuerdo que fue brutal, alucinaba con todo, lo que más me impactó fue cómo en un mismo territorio podía existir tanta diferencia. Los coches, los semáforos, las señales de tráfico, las tiendas, edificios, las calles, me llamaban mucho la atención. Esa tarde fuimos a la bolera y a comer perritos calientes, de fondo se escuchaban canciones country, americana, rock. Era todo muy cinematográfico.

Siempre habías visto esa valla cerca de tu casa pero, ¿en qué momento empezaste a hacerte preguntas y a investigar? El 2011 fue un año de cambios para mí, me vine a vivir a Madrid y eso me ayudó a ver todo desde otra perspectiva. Comencé a cuestionarme muchas cosas, a visualizar a mi familia y a mí mismo desde fuera.

Con tanta curiosidad, surgió la necesidad de empezar un proyecto, una búsqueda, quise investigar sobre mi familia, sobre mí, teniendo conversaciones con mi madre y allegados sobre cómo fue el comienzo, y por qué decidieron parar en Rota y no en otro lugar. ¿Y en qué se convirtió entonces la valla para ti? La valla se convirtió en una limitación, un tope. Observaba lo que acontecía dentro sin poder hacer nada. La principal motivación de mi proyecto es intentar transmitir la particularidad de este lugar y de mi círculo. Mostrar cómo conviven en un territorio de pequeñas dimensiones dos culturas aparentemente diferentes como son la andaluza y la de la América profunda, y cómo este mejunje ha influenciado directamente a mi personalidad y a la de mis allegados. Digo aparentemente porque después no son tan diferentes, conviven perfectamente y comparten gustos y tradiciones. Siempre pongo de ejemplo la similitud entre el flamenco puro, el cante hondo, y el blues del Mississippi y sus escenarios. Existe similitud, existen esas tradiciones y existe ese algo difícil de explicar. ¿Qué condujo a tu familia a instalarse en Rota? Al parecer todo comenzó en 1973, en esos años en Rota existía una discoteca llamada “April” y había fiestones con muy buena música, nada que ver con la música que se escuchaba en el resto de España. Todos los discos que lanzaban en USA llegaban rápido a través de los yanquis, la música prohibida era parte de ellos, desde los Rolling a Jethro Tull. Al parecer mi padre comenzó a trabajar vendiendo coches de importación americanos, se alquilaron una pequeña casita en la playa, colindando con la valla de la Base, donde hacían muchos guateques, pintaban murales y se divertían. Ahí comenzó todo. ¿Cómo influenció e influencia ahora ese pequeño universo yanqui a las poblaciones de los alrededores? Rota es un pequeño pueblo de unos 30.000 habitantes, que colinda con El puerto de Santa María, Sanlúcar de Barrameda y Chipiona. Tradicionalmente se han dedicado a la agricultura, a la mayetería como se le llama a la agricultura tradicional roteña. Bajo la dictadura de Franco se firmaron en 1953 Los pactos de Madrid, por los que España permitía a los EEUU, la

instalación en territorio español de cuatro bases norteamericanas, una de las cuales sería la aeronaval de Rota, perteneciente a la OTAN y que a día de hoy es el principal escudo antimisil de Europa. De las aproximadas 8.000 hectáreas que forman el municipio unas 2.400 pertenecen a la Base. A partir del 53 cambió todo y el pueblo se adaptó a las necesidades de la Base, generando muchos negocios y puestos de trabajo. Cambió y evolucionó según las necesidades del recinto militar y sus habitantes, convirtiéndose en un pueblo bastante peculiar y moderno para la época, con su autocine, sus negocios de comida rápida, coches, ropa y cualquier cosa de la que dispusiese un norteamericano en su país. Llegaron a convivir unos 11.000 ciudadanos norteamericanos con los alrededor de 20.000 roteños que vivían en el pueblo. Ahora con la llegada de los escudos antimisiles se prevee la llegada de unos 6.000 ciudadanos norteamericanos, teniendo en cuenta que ya viven unos 3.000, volvemos a estar en otro momento importante en la historia de la villa. ¿Cuándo empezaste a interesarte por la fotografía? Tendría unos ocho años o menos, mi padre era fotógrafo aficionado y siempre iba con su cámara. Me llamaba mucho la atención esa “máquina” y lo que se podía hacer con ella, me atrapaban las fotos al igual que los cuadros, les daba vida más allá del papel imaginándome siempre un antes y un después. Realmente creo que todo esto viene del cine, de compartir muchas películas con mi padre desde bien pequeño, yo quería hacer algo con lo que imaginaba, darle forma, movimiento.

A los 20 años decidí dejar la carrera y estudiar fotografía y cine, haciendo diferentes cursos y masters hasta día de hoy. Así pasó a convertirse en la base de mi trabajo. Interesándome en autores como John Gossage, Christian Patterson o Ron Jude y Jules Spinatsch, Adam Broomberg y Oliver Chanarin o Anouk Kruithof en cuanto a las apropiaciones y el concepto. También muchas películas como ‘En la casa’ de François Ozon, ‘Two-Lane Black Top’ de Monte Hellman o ‘Deliverance’ de John Boorman. Y por supuesto Jim Jarmusch, él ha sido y es un gran referente para mí, por el tratamiento de color, la rítmica de sus películas y su musicalidad.

‘Up Around The Bend’ se compone de fotografías en B/N y otras en color, ¿a qué se debe? El proyecto comenzó documentando cámara en mano todo lo que me rodeaba, mi familia, mis amigos, los lugares que de alguna manera han sido importantes para mí. Buscaba alrededor de la valla, acercándome cada vez más, hasta que un día fotografiando el interior de la base aparecieron cuatro patrullas de la policía militar americana. Me retuvieron alrededor de hora y media, sabían la matrícula de mi coche, el tiempo que llevaba fotografiando, etc. Me estaba metiendo en problemas, así que decidí alejarme de ahí un tiempo, fotografiando todo lo que pasaba alrededor, tomando notas y buscando material. Me llevó meses buscar soluciones medianamente “legales”, hasta que encontré la solución a mis problemas.

Un día en Madrid, durante la visita de un amigo de Rota que trabaja como militar en la Base, tuve un momento de lucidez. Mi amigo estaba mirando el móvil y de repente lo vi claro, la solución estaba en acceder a la Base a través de su móvil. Él trabajaba todos los días allí, pasaba horas con ellos, era parte de ellos. Vi claro que, a día de hoy, los teléfonos móviles se han convertido en el diario ilustrado de

cada persona, así que se lo propuse, accedió y comencé a trabajar con las fotografías que él me pasaba, las fotografías a color, de ahí que tengan poca resolución y mala calidad. Pasé de trabajar con las imágenes del teléfono móvil de mi amigo, a buscar directamente en las redes sociales o en la de otros amigos, conocidos, amigos de amigos, páginas oficiales y un sinfín de perfiles. Pasado un tiempo y viendo como iban quedando las primeras ediciones, buscaba directamente lo que me pedía el proyecto, teniendo en cuenta siempre que lo que quería mostrar tenía que ser una mezcla entre lo que los americanos quieren vendernos y lo que realmente me servía para completar mi proyecto. Con ese filtro el trabajo era más fácil, he pasado muchas horas buscando, muchas, hasta encontrar lo que realmente considero necesario para cerrar este proyecto. Viendo lo que me pedía, comencé a intervenir las imágenes, re-encuadrando las imágenes y añadiendo una retícula que conseguía a través de capturas de pantalla hechas con el ordenador. Pero el resultado no me convencía del todo y decidí que la intervención no fuese tan brusca, respetando la fotografía tomada inicialmente y añadiendo un pequeño retoque que recordase a esas capturas de pantalla, a las imágenes comprimidas en baja calidad. Haciendo hincapié en la pantalla del pc, de la tablet o del móvil como medio de información al gusto del consumidor, donde cada uno puede acceder a prácticamente lo que quiera, convirtiéndose en un “arma de doble filo”. ¿Por qué escogiste ese título? Mi amigo, al que conozco desde bien pequeño, es claramente un producto 100% Rota. Hijo de roteño y de irlandesa y criado bajo la cultura americana, amigos yanquis, costumbres yanquis, vida yanqui. Ya de más mayorcitos, mi amigo se compró el coche de sus sueños, y de los míos… un Ford Mustang.

Pasábamos horas y horas dando vueltas al pueblo escuchando la Creedence Clearwater, de ahí salió el título del proyecto, Up Around the Bend, estos viajes me sirvieron para mirarlo y observarlo todo desde otra perspectiva. Comencé a girar sobre mí mismo y a coger

apuntes como un loco. Fue un punto importante para que el proyecto se convirtiese en lo que a día de hoy es. ¿Opinas que esa base no debería de estar allí? Es el mismo conflicto de siempre; yo no soy partidario de que esté ahí como base militar que es, no estoy de acuerdo con las prácticas militares y menos con las estadounidenses. Ahora pregúntaselo a las miles de familias que llevan viviendo generaciones gracias a la base, tanto en Rota como en todos los pueblos colindantes y que tienen familiares casados con americanos. No me imagino a este pueblo sin la base. ¿Y por último, qué significa para ti Walk Outside? Pertenecer a un lugar pero formar parte de otro. Observar lo que te rodea y vivir como si estuvieses a 10.000 kilómetros de distancia. No aceptar lo que te corresponde, sentirte un “outsider”. Cádiz, cuna del flamenco, del cante jondo, folclore por excelencia, alejado de lo moderno, de lo novedoso. Aquí nací yo en 1986, un 19 de octubre. Por diferentes motivos me crié entre Jerez y Rota. Viví el cante profundo muy de cerca, aquí todo el mundo tiene “primos” gitanos o flamencos. A la vez mis padres ponían en la radio a Los Rollings, Janis Joplin o Led Zeppelin. Siempre me atrajo la cultura negra, yo quería cantar como ellos, tener una armónica y tocarla junto a un río sucio y oscuro. No sabía por qué pero es lo que me gustaba. Yo quería vivir en el delta del Mississippi y convertirme en un bluesman. Soñaba con tener un Cadillac y una casa de madera. Años más tarde me di cuenta de que el Sur, mi sur, se parecía demasiado al Sur donde cantaban estos personajes. Las marismas, los arrozales, los ríos sucios y oscuros, la música, honda y pesada. Se trata de observar, de imaginar y de aceptar lo que te rodea. Por suerte o por desgracia, me tocó convivir con la base hispanoamericana, con su cultura y sus tradiciones, con esos personajes, sucios y oscuros. Abrí los ojos, acepté mis circunstancias y a día de hoy sigo soñando con el delta a la vez que escucho a el Torta o Luís de la Pica. Esa es mi realidad.

Tell us about the first time you went into the Naval Station Rota and how did you manage to do this. Actually it took me a pretty long time to go into the base for the first time. I was around fifteen years old and it was thanks to a friend of mine, who was the son of a senior military official, and his mother. We had to go in with her because she was in the obligation of being responsible for us. I remember it was amazing, I was losing my head over everything; what struck me the most was how in one same territory there could be so many differences. The cars, the stoplights, the street signs, the stores, the buildings, the streets, they really caught my attention. That afternoon we went bowling and ate hot dogs while in the background there was country and rock music playing out loud. Everything was very cinematographic.

You always had that fence next to your house, but in which moment did you began to ask questions and investigate about it? The year 2011 brought many changes for me; I moved to Madrid and that helped me see everything from another perspective. I started questioning many things, to see my family and myself like an outsider.

Due to all that curiosity, the necessity to start a project emerged, a quest, I started to investigate about my family, myself, having conversations with my mother and relatives about how was it in the beginning and why they decided to stop in Rota and not in some other place.

What did that fence become to you? The fence turned into a limitation, a cap. I used to observe what was going on inside without being able to do anything about it. The main motivation behind my project was to try and convey the singularity of this place and my close ones.

To show how in a relatively small territory two apparently different cultures, the Andalusian and the American, live together, and how this mélange has influenced directly in my relatives personality and mine. I say ‘apparently different’ because after all they are not that different, the get along perfectly and share tastes and traditions. As

an example I always bring forward the likeness there is between the pure flamenco, the Cante jondo, and the blues from the Mississippi and its scenery. There are similarities, traditions and that ‘I don’t know what’ so hard to explain What drove your family to move to Rota? Apparently it all started in 1973. During those years there was this nightclub called “April” in Rota and they hosted amazing parties with great music, very different from the music that was being played in the rest of Spain. All the albums released in The United States were there thanks to the Americans, the forbidden music, from The Rolling Stones to Jethro Tull. It seems my father started working selling American imported cars, so they rented a little house by the beach, adjacent to the military base, where they had a lot of parties, painted murals and had fun. It all began there.

How did that little American universe influenced, and keeps on influencing, the communities that surround it? Rota is a small town with approximately 30.000 inhabitants, right beside the Port of Santa María, Sanlúcar de Barrameda and Chipiona. Traditionally it has been an agricultural town. Under Franco’s dictatorship, the Pact of Madrid was signed in 1953, through which The United States was allowed to install in the Spanish territory four North American military bases, one of which is the Naval Station Rota, under NATO’s control. From the approximate 20.000 acres that compose the town, 6.000 belong to the base. Since 1953 everything changed and the town adapted according to the necessities of the base, creating many jobs and businesses. It changed and evolved according to the needs of the military compound and it inhabitants, turning into a very peculiar and modern town for that time, with its own drive-in cinema, fast food restaurants, cars, clothes and anything an American could find in its homeland. At some point there were around 11.000 Americans living there alongside the 20.000 locals from Rota. Now, with the arrival of the new missile defense system, 6.000 American citizens

are expected, adding to the 3.000 that already live there, making this another important moment in the history of the town.

When did your interest for photography began? It must have been when I was around eight years old; mi father was an amateur photographer who always carried his camera around. That “machine” could really catch my eye; everything you could do with it, I was drawn into the photographs, just like with paintings, I endowed them with life imagining a before and after the scene depicted. I believe all this comes from the cinema, from sharing many movies with my father since I was a little kid. I wanted to do something with all I imagined, give it shape, movement. When I was 20 years old I decided to quit my career and started studying photography and cinema, taking different courses and masters, up until today, and like that it evolved into my job. Authors like John Gossage, Christian Patterson or Ron Jude and Jules Spinatsch, Adam Broomberg and Oliver Chanarin have always interested me, or Anouk Kruithof when it comes to appropriation and concept. Also many movies, like “In The House” by François Ozon, “Two-Lane Black Top” by Monte Hellman or “Deliverance” from John Boorman. And off course Jim Jarmusch, he is and has been a huge referent for me in terms of color, rhythm and musicality.

“Up Around the Bend” is composed of color and B/W photographs, why is this? The project started documenting, camera in hand, everything that surrounded me: my family, my friends and significant places. I was constantly looking around town, getting each time more close, until one day, while I was photographing the inside of the base, four military American patrols came by. They held me for about an hour and a half, they knew my vehicle registrations plates, how much time I had been spending taking pictures, etc. I was getting into trouble, so I decided to stay away for some time, though I kept on capturing everything that surrounded me, taking notes and looking for material. It took me months to come up with relatively “legal” solutions, until one day the answer to my problems materialized. In Madrid during the visit of a friend of mine from Rota, who works at the base, I had a moment of clarity. Mi friend was staring at his phone and suddenly it became clear, the solution was to enter to the base through his phone. He used to work there every day; spending countless hours with them, he was one of them. I realized then that nowadays mobile phones have turned into personal illustrated diaries, so I proposed it to him, he accepted and I started then working with the photographs he gave me, the color photographs. That’s why they have a low resolution and quality. I moved from working with the mobile photographs of my friend, to look for pictures in the social media or through other friends, acquaintances, friends of friends, official websites and countless profiles. Some time passed and after observing the first editions of the book, I started looking directly for what the project was asking, having always into account that what I wanted to show was a mixture between what Americans are always trying to sell us and what truly worked for me to complete the project. With that filter in mind the job became easier. I’ve spent many hours searching, many, until I found what I really considered necessary to complete the project. Paying attention to what the project needed, I started

editing the photographs, re-framing them and adding crosslinks that I achieved by making print-screens with my computer. But the final result didn’t convinced me thoroughly so I decided the edition of the images could not be that abrupt, that I should respect the original image, adding a small edition that resembled the print screen or the low-res images. Emphasizing in the laptop screen, or tablet or phone as the informative media chosen by the consumer, where each person can enter almost anywhere they want to, turning into a double-edged sword.

Why did you choose that title? Mi friend, whom I know since we were little, is clearly 100% from Rota. Son of a “roteño” and an Irish woman, he was raised under the American culture, with American friends, American manners, living an American life. As we grew older he got to buy the car of his dreams, and mine… a Ford Mustang. We used to spend many hours driving around town listening to Creedence Clearwater Revival, from there the title of the project was born, Up Around The Bend; those rides helped me to see everything from another perspective. My head started spinning and I was writing notes non-stop. It was an important milestone for the project, for it to become what it is.

Do you think that the base shouldn’t be there? We come back to the same conflict there has always been; I’m not in favor of a military base being there, I’m not in favor of any military practices, much less the American ones. Now go and ask the thousands of families that have been living for over generations thanks to the base, both in Rota and all of the adjacent towns, and the people who have relatives married to Americans. I cannot imagine that town without the base.

And finally, what does Walk Outside mean to you? To Walk Outside is to belong to a place but to be part of another. To observe what surrounds you, living as if you were ten thousand miles away. Not accepting what corresponds you, feeling like an outsider. Cadiz, the place where flamenco was born, the Cante jondo, quintessentially folkloric, drifted away from what’s modern, what’s new. I was born here in 1986, on October the 19th. Because of different reasons I was raised in-between Jerez and Rota. I experienced the Cante jondo very closely; here everyone has “cousins” who are gypsies or flamencos.

At the same time my parents where playing on the radio The Rolling Stones, Janis Joplin or Led Zeppelin. I’ve been always drawn into the African-American culture; I wanted to sing like them, to have a harmonica and play it by the delta of the Mississippi turning into a bluesman. I dreamt about having a Cadillac and a wooden house. Years later I realized that the south, my south, is very similar to the south where these characters were singing; the marshes, the paddy fields, the dirty and opaque rivers, the music, heavy and profound. It’s all about looking closely, imagining and accepting what surrounds you.

Luckily or by disgrace, I had to live with the Spanish-American base, its cultures and traditions, with those characters, dirty and gloomy. I opened my eyes, accepted my circumstances and up until today I still dream about the delta while I listen to “el Torta” or Luis de la Pica.

That’s my reality.

Fred Mortagne, más conocido como French Fred, es director, filmer y fotógrafo de skate, y sí, es francés.

Hace treinta años que empezó a patinar y de ahí a desarrollar una especial sensibilidad por la arquitectura que protagonizaba sus salidas con los chicos fue un paso. Lo siguiente fue la fotografía. Él mismo confiesa que cuando observa una escena, lo que ve son formas, rayas y tonalidades, su reto a la hora del disparo es buscar la mejor forma de capturar dichos elementos fusionándose con el truco. Lo conocimos en el pasado Bright Tradeshow, donde se presentó oficialmente como el nuevo advocate de Element, participando, como no, en el Element Perspective Project, una colección de camisetas que recoge las visiones únicas de fotógrafos como el mismo French, además de Jake Darwen, Brian Gaberman y Marcel Veldman.

Fred Montagne, better known as French Fred, is a director, filmmaker and skateboarding photographer, and yes, he is French. Thirty years ago he started skateboarding, but it was later that he realized what he was really meant to do: stand behind the camera. And like this, he started filming, until he became recognized internationally. Because if there’s something he is good at, is taking full advantage of the architecture and always finding the right angle. When he sees a scene, what he observes are shapes, lines and tones, always striving to capture them at their best. That’s why, on his trips, the search for a perfect spot is always present, fixed in his mind. He went to the Bright Tradeshow to introduce himself as Element’s new advocate and present the collection of t-shirts that the brand has released with his pictures stamped. Like that, we had the chance to ask him a few questions and get to know him better.

A MENUDO OCURRE QUE MUCHOS FOTÓGRAFOS HAN IDO A LOS LUGARES DONDE YO VOY A FOTOGRAFIAR, POR LO QUE DEBO BUSCAR ALGO CREATIVO Y ORIGINAL, UN ÁNGULO ÉPICO EN EL CUAL NADIE HAYA PENSADO ANTES

¿Cómo fueron tus inicios con la fotografía y el vídeo? El skate es el inicio de todo, ¡llevo enganchado más de treinta años! A comienzos de los noventa, entendí que no era lo suficientemente bueno como para ser patrocinado o algo parecido, así que empecé a filmar, como una forma de mantenerme cerca de ese mundo. Funcionó bastante bien, ya que he hecho importantes vídeos para grandes marcas con los mejores riders. A partir de la filmación y de mi trabajo como director me empezó a llamar la atención la fotografía, a comienzos del año 2000. Este medio me permite mostrar las cosas de una forma diferente al vídeo. Es verdad que son complementarios, nunca he podido elegir uno por encima del otro, así que siempre trabajo con los dos. Incluso, cada vez que puedo, intento combinarlos en los proyectos en los que me involucro. ¿Qué es lo que más te atrae de la fotografía de skate? A diferencia del vídeo, la fotografía se concentra en un instante y te permite pasar más tiempo mirando. Adoro hacer vídeos, editar partes con música.

El vídeo te muestra muchas cosas, pero también evita que veas otras.

Por ese motivo llegué a la fotografía. Y es por eso también que jamás elegiré solo uno de los dos, porque tienen diferentes cosas para ofrecer. Ahora, con las cámaras de fotos que hacen vídeos de alta calidad se cierra el círculo y puedo tener acceso a todo con una sola cámara.

Algunos dicen que la fotografía de skate es bastante repetitiva y que por eso, al final, la localización es esencial. ¿Cuál ha sido la localización que más te ha impactado hasta el momento? ¡Son tantas! El lugar es muy importante, sí, al menos en mis fotografías.

Dedico mucho tiempo a la búsqueda de spots, que sean buenos tanto fotográficamente como para patinar. No son fáciles de encontrar.

Pero siempre estoy explorando, incluso cuando estoy de vacaciones con mi novia en un lugar nuevo. He encontrado muchos spots así. ¿Qué te parece el Bright Tradeshow? ¿Cómo fue tu paso por allí?

He aterrizado aquí como el nuevo advocate de Element. Hemos hecho un vídeo de Element Perspective para la ocasión, presentando la historia tras mi trabajo como fotógrafo para el lanzamiento de mi camiseta de Element Perspective.

¿Qué significa para ti ser advocate de Element? ¿Qué cosas te aporta? Element me pide que realice para ellos ciertos proyectos específicos, pero además puedo desarrollar proyectos personales en los que puedo contar con el equipo de Element, lo que me ayuda a que éstos sucedan. Por muchos años fui completamente independiente, lo cual fue genial, pero nada fácil. Trabajaré en varios proyectos, tanto en vídeo como en fotografía. Vamos a hacer también muchas camisetas para la serie. Al mismo tiempo estoy empezando otro proyecto como embajador de la marca Leica, que es más que asombroso, es todo un honor. Combinaré proyectos con las dos marcas y eso me hace muy feliz.

Dices que ves cosas que otros no ven (así como ellos ven cosas que tú no). ¿Qué es lo que ves cuando coges tu cámara y empiezas a trabajar? Algunas veces es muy simple y natural: estoy en la posición correcta para capturar el mejor ángulo. Otras veces me toma algo de tiempo y esfuerzo, y otras, simplemente no puedo descifrar lo que tengo delante y cuando veo la foto de alguien más en el mismo lugar pienso “¡ah, era eso!”. A menudo ocurre que muchos fotógrafos han ido a los lugares donde yo voy a fotografiar, por lo que debo buscar algo creativo y original, un ángulo épico en el cual nadie haya pensado antes… y me digo ¿cómo nunca antes nadie había capturado eso? Pero de nuevo, es porque todos tenemos nuestro propio enfoque basado en nuestras experiencias y sensibilidad, y es normal que no veamos las mismas cosas, incluso cuando algo parece tan obvio. Eso es lo cool de la fotografía, ¡todos tenemos el potencial para ser fotógrafos! ¿Con quién has trabajado que te gustaría volver a trabajar? Con todos los tíos que he capturado; si ya lo hice una vez es porque fueron muy buenos y tienen un estilo épico. ¡Así que los volvería a retratar en cualquier momento! Los estilos de algunas personas son, simplemente, fotogénicos. Para mí es tan importante como la arquitectura y el ambiente que rodea al skater. Es la mitad del trabajo. Gran parte de lo que hago consiste en escoger al tío adecuado para un lugar específico, no llevo a alguien a un lugar al azar. Hay mucho análisis tras ello.

Claro que hay algo de suerte también. Pero en mi experiencia, la suerte jamás ha jugado un papel importante en el éxito de una fotografía.

When did you start taking photos and when did you realize you wanted to focus them on skateboarding? Skateboarding is the starting point of everything, as I got fully hooked to it over 30 years ago!

And I’ve been in love with it ever since. Back in the early nineties, understanding that I would never be good enough to be sponsored or anything like that, I started filming, to find a way to stick around skateboarding. It worked out all right. Up until now, I’ve made major skate videos for the biggest brands and with the best skateboarders. Thanks to my filming and directing work, I started to get attracted to photography in the early 2000’s. Photography is another type of medium that I really like, because it allows you to show things in a different way than video. As both mediums are so complementary, I’ve never been able to chose one or another, so I always keep doing both. Whenever I can, I even try to combine them together in particular projects.

What is that attracts you the most about skateboarding photography? As opposed to video, photography focuses on one given instant; it allows people to spend more time looking at it, at least more time than video. I love making videos, editing a part with music. Videos show you a lot of things, but they also stop you from seeing others.

That’s why I naturally came to photography, in addition to filmmaking. And that’s why I will never choose to do only one of them; I love them both because they have different things to offer. Nowadays, that digital photo cameras can shoot high quality video, it’s just great, I can have everything accessible in one camera!

Some may say skateboarding photography is very repetitive and that’s why, ultimately, the location ends up being essential.

Which location has impressed you the most in the shootings you have done? So many! The spot is very important, yes, at least in my pictures. I spend a lot of time looking for spots that are both, good for shooting and good for skating. They are not easy to find. But I’m always on the hunt, even when I’m on holidays with my girlfriend in a new place. I have found many spots like that.

What about the Bright Tradeshow? How was your experience there? I came to be introduced as Element’s new advocate, which is something that started pretty recently, and for the occasion we made an Element Perspective video, featuring the story behind my photographic work, all this for the launch of my Element Perspective t-shirt series.

For sure you must have met many other photographers and skaters being there with whom you stay in touch. I pretty much know everyone by now! But there are always new comers to meet from the

new generations. It’s important to be connected with what is happening, which is not easy, as so much is happening these days! It’s always good to be part of some sort of community. Photographers and filmmakers have a lot of respect for each other, so you can always count with the help of one of your mates.

What does it mean to you to be an advocate for Element? What things does this provide you on a personal level? While Element asks me to work for them on some specific projects, they give me the freedom to develop other personal projects as well, where I can shoot with the Element team, with the support of the brand to make it happen. For many years I was fully independent, which was great, but it wasn’t easy at all. I work on various projects for Element, both in video and photography. It’s exciting to work with such an epic team.

We will work on a bunch of Element Perspective t-shirts too. At the same time I am starting another advocacy program with Leica, which is beyond amazing. I’m so honored. So you can rest assured that I will combine projects with the two brands. I’m so excited to shoot!

You say you see things that others don’t (as they see things that you don’t). What do you see when you hold your camera and start working? Sometimes it is just so simple and natural; I end up in the right position to get the best angle. Other times it takes some time and some effort, and other times, I just can’t figure it out. Then, I would see someone else’s picture on the same spot I was, and be like, “oh, that’s what it was!” But the opposite happens too; many photographers have been to the same skate spots where I end up shooting, so I have look for something creative and original, an epic angle that no one else has thought about before, and I’m like, “how come no one has shot that before?” But then again, it’s because we all have our own approach based on our own experience and sensitivity, and it’s normal we don’t see the same things, even when something appears so obvious. That’s the cool thing about photography; everyone has the potential to be a photographer!

With whom would you like to work with that you’ve worked before? Oh, every single guy that I shot. If I did, it’s because they are super good and have an epic style. So I would shoot with them again anytime! Some people’s styles are just so photogenic. To me, the style is just as important as the architecture or environment around the skateboarder. It’s half the job. A big part of my work consists in picking up the right guy for a specific spot. I don’t bring someone somewhere just randomly. There’s a lot of thinking into it. Of course there’s a part of luck, but in my experience, luck never played a big role in the success of a picture.

Dan Kuhlken y Nathan Goldman son los fundadores del estudio DKNG, ubicado en Los Ángeles, y son famosos gracias a su habilidad para reproducir ideas de una manera inusual, representando la realidad con originalidad. Su estilo, que bebe de los cartoons y los comics, mezclado con el nuevo arte gráfico, ha logrado una nueva forma de promover la música y los films. The world is changing and, with it, also the notion of travelling and moving from one place to another. If hundreds of years ago travelling was expensive, slow and not very comfortable, nowadays is one of the easiest things to do. As never before, the modernization of old vehicles has become popular, bringing back their shapes, colours and style, besides that, the myth of rock ‘n’ roll and cinema has recreated a new way of seeing the world. Dan Kuhlken and Nathan Goldman are the founders of DKNG Studios, based in L.A., and they are now famous thanks to their ability to reproduce ideas in an unusual way, representing reality with authenticity. Their style, which has tints of cartoon and comic art, mixing it with the new graphic art, has achieved a new way of promoting music and films. Their inspiration comes from the passions they have in common with bands and artists. This has got them to work along big brands, such as MTV, Disney and HBO. Through DKNG’s posters we explore abstract images, geometric shapes or reinterpretations of landscapes and instruments, all closely linked to modernity. Their pieces take us travelling all over the world and allow us to scape, even if it is just for a moment, from the reality.

DISFRUTO ESTANDO EN LA NATURALEZA Y ALEJÁNDOME DEL RUIDO DE LA CIUDAD. SI A VECES TENGO DIFICULTADES RESOLVIENDO ALGÚN DISEÑO, UNA CAMINATA EN EL PARQUE SUELE AYUDARME A ENCONTRAR LA SOLUCIÓN

¿De dónde surgió DKNG? Todo comenzó como una colaboración en el liceo, donde Dan y yo tocábamos en una banda. Empezamos creando el arte para nuestros discos y pósters de conciertos y el negocio creció a partir de allí. Siempre nos ha interesado fusionar los mundos de la música y el diseño. ¿De dónde obtenéis la inspiración para vuestros trabajos? Dan y yo somos fanáticos de las películas y de la televisión, así que a menudo recurrimos al cine para inspirarnos. Nos gusta contar historias a través de nuestro trabajo, también transmitir un estado de ánimo o una emoción. Igualmente, intentamos incluir muchas gemas ocultas y diferentes niveles de detalle en nuestras piezas, así la audiencia puede volver y descubrir nuevos elementos cada vez. ¿Son vuestros clientes quienes proponen la idea o tenéis libertad total a la hora de escoger un tema? Nuestros clientes proveen algunas guías básicas o nos informan de cierto contenido que quieren evitar, pero casi siempre nos dan bastante libertad para crear nuestras propias ideas. Normalmente les presentamos tres conceptos diferentes para un proyecto y a partir de ahí lo refinamos hacia una sola idea. ¿Por qué habéis decidido trabajar principalmente con la industria del entretenimiento? Nos apasiona la música, las películas y la televisión, por eso fuimos a parar con clientes de dichas industrias. Sin embargo, últimamente hemos encontrado otros sectores como el automotriz, los cosméticos, la tecnología o el deporte que también están interesados en adaptar la estética del poster de conciertos a su branding. ¿Cuál consideráis que es la clave de vuestro éxito y cómo habéis llegado a trabajar con nombres tan importantes como MTV, Disney y HBO? Gran parte de nuestro éxito ha surgido orgánicamente al compartir nuestras piezas en Internet; subiendo vídeos en los que mostramos el proceso de creación de nuestros proyectos. Hemos tenido la suerte de que muchas de estas compañías han contactado con nosotros directamente buscando nuestra colaboración con sus marcas.

Nuestro monotema esta edición es Walk Outside, ¿normalmente a dónde vais para tomar un respiro y desconectar? Vivo en San Francisco y la ciudad tiene muchísimos parques increíbles a los cuales puedo llegar caminando desde mi oficina. Disfruto estando en la naturaleza y alejándome del ruido de la ciudad. Si a veces tengo dificultades resolviendo algún diseño, una caminata en el parque suele ayudarme a encontrar la solución. También me gusta caminar por la ciudad, donde tiendo a encontrar inspiración en la señales de tráfico y el street art. ¿Consideras tu trabajo estresante? En general no, nuestro trabajo es agradable. La única situación en la que el trabajo se vuelve estresante es cuando los deadlines son muy apretados para desarrollar nuestro proceso normal. Aparte de temas de cronograma, suele ser divertido y manejable. ¿Qué artistas (del pasado o contemporáneos) os inspiran cada día? Solemos ver películas para inspirarnos; de realizadores que van desde Alfred Hitchcock a Wes Anderson. También nos gusta el trabajo en diseño de títulos cinematográficos de Saul Bass. La lista de artistas contemporáneos que nos inspiran incluye a Invisible Creature, Aaron Draplin, Jason Munn y Lab Partners. ¿Habéis hecho alguna vez street art? No, no nos hemos aventurado en el mundo del street art, pero nos encantaría crear un mural de gran tamaño durante algún punto de nuestras carreras. ¿Cuál es la ciudad de tus sueños? Dan y yo crecimos en San Diego, California, y los dos planeamos vivir toda nuestra vida en California. Actualmente vivimos en San Francisco, que tiene una gran mezcla de la vida al aire libre de California con la de una ciudad metropolitana.

Habéis dicho que vuestras raíces se encuentran en la música. ¿Con qué músicos habéis trabajado y con cuáles os gustaría trabajar? I ENJOY BEING IN THE NATURE AND GETTING AWAY FROM THE NOISE OF THE CITY. IF I’M EVER HAVING DIFFICULTIES TO SOLVE A DESIGN PROBLEM, USUALLY A WALK IN THE PARK WILL HELP ME FIND A SOLUTION

How did DKNG start? It all started as a collaboration in high school, where Dan and I played in a rock band together. We started by creating our own album artwork and gig posters and the business grew from there. We’ve always been interested in merging the worlds of music and design.

From where do you get the inspiration for your works? We’re both fans of film and television, so we often look to film for inspiration. We like to tell stories with our work and also convey a mood or an emotion. We also try to include several hidden gems and levels of detail in our work, so that you, as the viewer, can keep coming back to the work and continue to discover new elements in the piece.

Are your clients the ones that come up with the idea or you have complete freedom in the choice of the subject? Our clients often provide some basic guidelines or certain content that they want to avoid, but more often than not they give us quite a bit of freedom to create our own ideas. We typically present to a client three different concepts for a project and from there refine to a single idea.

Why did you choose to work mainly with the entertainment industry? We are passionate about music, film and television, that’s why we end up working with clients in those industries. However, lately we’ve been finding that other industries such as the automotive, cosmetics, technology and sports, are also interested in adapting the gig poster aesthetic to their branding.

Which is the key to your success and how did you get to work along such important names as MTV, Disney and HBO? A lot of our success has come organically from sharing our work online, sharing process videos of how we create our projects and always trying to present our best work. We’ve been lucky in the way that many of these companies have approached us directly for collaborations with their brands.

This issue’s topic is Walk Outside, where do you normally go to take a breath and disconnect? I live in San Francisco and the city has several great parks within walking distance of my office. I enjoy being in the nature and getting away from the noise of the city. If I’m ever having difficulties to solve a design problem, usually a walk in the park will help me find a solution. I also enjoy walking the city, where I often find inspiration from signage and street art.

Do you consider your job stressful? For the most part no, our work is enjoyable.

The only time work can become stressful is when the deadlines are too tight to allow our normal process to develop. Aside from scheduling issues, is usually fun and manageable.

Which artists (from the past or present) inspire you everyday? We often look to film for inspiration; filmmakers ranging from Alfred Hitchcock to Wes Anderson.

We also like the title design work of Saul Bass. Contemporary artists that inspire us include Invisible Creature, Aaron Draplin, Jason Munn and Lab Partners.

Have you ever done street art? No, we haven’t ventured into the world of street art, but we’d love to create a large-scale mural at some point in our careers.

Which is the city of your dreams? We both grew up in San Diego, California, and we both plan to spend our lives living in California. My current city is San Francisco, which is a great mix of the outdoor Californian lifestyle with the metropolitan city vibe.

You’ve said your roots are found in music. With which musicians have you worked and with which ones would you like to work? Some of the musical artists we’ve worked with are The Black Keys, The National, Eric Clapton, Dave Matthews Band, Phish, Jack White and Flight of the Conchords. We’d love to work with Radiohead someday.

KARL MACKIE PAISAJES VASTOS, PROFUNDOS Y MISTERIOSOS

Sus imágenes giran en torno al mar, el surf y el estilo de vida que estos dos temas evocan. Aunque sus fotografías difieren las unas de las otras, su sello está siempre presente cuando se observa su trabajo, logrando transmitir cierto sentimiento de eternidad y misterio, como si el momento capturado pudiese vivir para siempre dentro de su encuadre y no desvanecerse nunca. Cornwall bien podría ser su telón de fondo, un lugar rodeado por el océano, sombrío y espeluznante, pero sin embargo encantador. La mayoría de sus paisajes son capturados allí, donde la idea de inmensidad se expresa con seguridad. Elegido como uno de los artistas presentes durante la exposición inaugural de The Current Gallery, tuvimos la oportunidad de hacerle unas preguntas y sentir a través de él el vínculo tan especial que comparte con el océano.

His images clearly revolve around the ocean, surfing and the lifestyle those two subjects evoke. Though his photographs differ from each other and not all are the same, his signature is felt as you take a look through his works. Either, if it is both in full colour or black and white, his pictures manage to convey a certain feeling of eternity and mystery, as if the captured moment could live forever within his frames and never fade away. Cornwall might as well work as his backdrop, a place surrounded by the ocean, gloomy and appalling, but nonetheless mesmerizing. Most of his landscapes are captured there, where the idea of immensity is firmly expressed. Chosen as one of the artists to be present during the opening exhibition of The Current Gallery, we had the chance to ask him some questions and feel through him that special bond he shares with the ocean.

Cornwall está muy presente en tu trabajo, a través de él podemos ver lo hermoso que es este lugar. ¿Cómo lo describirías? Cornwall es un lugar precioso, pequeño pero lo suficientemente amplio como para tener mucha variedad dentro del condado. En otros pueblos y ciudades alrededor del mundo, las plazas han pasado a simbolizar el lugar donde está el centro de la acción, el lugar para la congregación.

Pero Cornwall es diferente. Es un lugar donde la vida en el exterior es primordial, especialmente debido a nuestros paisajes, aire limpio y, por supuesto, el océano. Cornwall tiene una infraestructura muy diferente a la de otros lugares del Reino Unido, es algo que sientes y debes aceptar para poder mantenerlo de ese modo. ¿Cómo describirías tu estilo al fotografiar? Atemporal, crudo y honesto. La composición lo es todo y siempre intento contar una historia honesta en cada encuadre. Trato de no disparar de la misma manera siempre, pero a fin de cuentas creo que estoy sintonizado con lo que se podría llamar mi estilo personal. ¿Qué crees que hace que una fotografía sea atemporal? La definición de una imagen que pasa a ser atemporal puede ser medida de diferentes maneras y, al final, no depende solamente del fotógrafo.

Nunca he salido a capturar algo que yo considere atemporal, sin embargo, a través de mis exposiciones he hablado con personas que han estado en el preciso lugar que he fotografiado, y puedo ver cómo esa imagen es para ellos un recuerdo sin tiempo de un momento

memorable, y el hecho de que sea capturada con film hace que signifique aún más. La manera en la cuál una imagen es interpretada resulta única para cada individuo. ¿En qué o dónde yace la magia del film? Las especificaciones no tienen sentido cuando se trata del carrete, por supuesto todos tienen diferentes características, pero su exposición no siempre puede ser copiada por una cámara digital. Existe un sentimiento natural y honesto cuando trabajas con carrete, sin saber nunca del todo si lo que capturaste será bueno hasta que revelas la película. Ese es siempre uno de los mejores y más anticipados momentos para mí.

Algunas veces te gusta jugar con fugas de luz, ¿qué representan para ti o qué le añaden a tu trabajo? ¿Son intencionales o circunstanciales? Las fugas de luz han pasado a ser para mí una costumbre; ciertamente no he perfeccionado la técnica hasta un punto que me haga feliz. Gasto demasiada película abriendo el dorso de la cámara y arruinando los carretes, pero luego, algunas veces, funciona realmente y logro el efecto que estaba buscando. Estoy en el proceso de desarrollar un dorso customizado que me permita deslizarlo rápidamente para exponer la película a la luz, lo cual, espero, lleve las fugas de luz al siguiente nivel.

En tu trabajo podemos ver algunos paisajes espectaculares, ¿qué características debe tener un lugar o qué sentimientos debe des-

pertar para que decidas capturarlo? Creo que cuando llegas a un lugar y sus alrededores te hacen sentir como si fuese más grande que tú mismo, es ahí cuando siento que debo sumergirme en el momento para capturar una pequeña parte de ese sentimiento inicial.

Normalmente, cuando hay estrés o negatividad, la naturaleza es buena consejera y estar afuera nos da tranquilidad. ¿En qué momentos es importante para ti salir a caminar y qué te ofrece esto? Creo que todos necesitamos esa conexión con la naturaleza, donde quiera que estemos, es nuestro instinto cavernícola. Yo, personalmente, suelo tener una agenda bastante ocupada todos los días, tengo una familia y manejo un negocio y, a veces, todo eso se acumula. Cuando sucede, salto al océano, donde toda esa negatividad desaparece lentamente y es remplazada por algo muy distinto.

Durante los últimos tres meses he estado entrenando para participar en un maratón que se llevará a cabo en octubre. Corro ochenta kilómetros todas las semanas, principalmente a lo largo de los senderos costeros de Cornwall. El correr esa distancia, entre la naturaleza, respirando el aire fresco, remplaza cualquier estrés por un positivismo claro que ofrece un escape similar al que te da el océano.

Si tuvieses que describir el océano con tres palabras, ¿cuáles elegirías? Vasto, Profundo y Misterioso. ¿Crees que tus imágenes ayudan a despertar la conciencia de las personas en cuanto al cuidado del océano? ¿Es esto lo que buscas?

Esta es una pregunta bastante interesante, una especie de cortina de humo… Nunca he pensado en mi trabajo de esa manera, por lo tanto, en el contexto de lo que hago, no estoy fotografiando activamente para despertar la conciencia de quienes ven mis imágenes. Estoy de acuerdo con que el imaginario que empleo suele venir de una visión muy hermosa y colorida y esto muestra el mejor perfil de nuestros océanos.

Esto es en gran parte debido a que cuando capturo algo, intento hacerlo en su mejor capacidad, además del material que presento. Sin embargo, durante las últimas semanas en Cornwall hemos tenido tuberías de aguas negras vertidas en nuestros océanos, afectando a todos y cambiando el paisaje por uno muy distinto. Como muchas personas, hago todo lo que puedo para llamar la atención sobre la situación que están pasando nuestros mares, a través de mis canales y utilizando mi trabajo. Tal vez el mejor ejemplo de cómo mi obra ha sido usada es que he proporcionado las imágenes para el Global Wave Conference del 2015 (globalwaveconference.org), donde se muestra lo hermosos que son nuestros océanos y por qué debemos protegerlos.

A parte de eso, ¿qué otros propósitos intentas cumplir a través de tu fotografía? Documentar la vida en los diversos contextos en los

cuales trabajo es probablemente el más obvio, también continuar con un acercamiento democrático a la fotografía, enfocándome en hacer que mi trabajo crezca y sea más asequible. ¿Cómo ves la situación actual de los océanos? Últimamente y ahora más que nunca, he pasado mucho tiempo trabajando con Surfers Against Sewage, debido a estar trabajando con ellos en el Global Wave Conference. Gracias a esto he aumentado mi conocimiento en el tema. Todo esto tiene que ver con las tuberías de aguas negras vertidas en Cornwall y sus alrededores que mencionaba antes. Somos muy afortunados de contar con varias obras de caridad alrededor del mundo luchando por el océano. Si no hay conciencia, este es un tema muy grande para poner aquí en palabras. Si miro los océanos de manera local, con lo que está sucediendo alrededor mío, entonces diría que la situación es terrible y quién quiera que sea responsable debe empezar a escuchar a la gente. ¿De qué manera crees que el océano y el arte pueden relacionarse?

La creatividad y el océano trabajan juntos de una manera familiar; a menudo, ese sentimiento que el artista evoca puede ser propio del océano. Hace algunos años realicé el ‘handplane Art Project’, un show de arte universal donde se pidió a personas de todo el mundo que dibujaran en un handplane su interpretación del océano y lo que significa para ellos. El proyecto unió dos géneros en uno y evocó pensamientos y memorias creativas sobre el océano. Creo que la conexión en este caso es similar a la de la pregunta pasada acerca de estar fuera en la naturaleza despejando la mente, lo mismo se puede decir del arte. ¿Cómo te sientes formando parte de la exposición inaugural de The Current Gallery? El primer lugar en Barcelona dedicado exclusivamente al océano y el arte. Cuando supe de The Current Gallery y luego fui invitado a participar, lo consideré como algo muy importante para mí, además de sentirme muy honrado de ser elegido y tener la oportunidad de mostrar mi trabajo a una audiencia más grande. Es realmente genial que una galería esté comprometida con mostrar este tipo de trabajo en un contexto mixto, pero más importante aún, con el mensaje de conciencia hacia el océano, y ser parte de ello, aunque sea en una pequeña medida, es asombroso.

Finalmente, ¿qué proyectos tienes para lo que queda del año?

Tengo algunos proyectos bastante emocionantes para lo que queda del año, como un show espectacular en Bristol a finales de octubre/ noviembre y luego, terminando el año, tengo una colaboración con una empresa de moda de Nueva Zelanda, y espero abrir una galería Pop-Up en Londres.

Cornwall is very present in your work, and through it we can see how beautiful this place is. How would you describe it? Cornwall is a beautiful place, small but vast enough to have so much variation within the county. In towns and cities around the world, squares have come to symbolize the centre of the action, a location for congregation. But Cornwall is very different. It’s a place where outdoor life is central to everything, largely due to our landscapes, clean air and, of course, the ocean. Cornwall has a completely different infrastructure to other parts of the UK, and you feel that and embrace it to keep it that way.

And how would you describe your style when photographing?

Timeless, gritty and honest. Composition is everything and I always try and tell an honest story in a single frame. I try not to shoot in the same way all of the time, but ultimately, I’m tuned into what could be said is my signature style.

What do you think makes a picture timeless? I think the definition of an image becoming timeless can be measured in many different ways and, ultimately, not solely by the photographer. I’ve never gone out to shoot and capture something I feel is timeless. However, through my exhibitions I have talked to people who have been to a particular place I have captured and I can see that to them that picture is a timeless reminder of a memorable moment, and the fact it’s been shot on film means even more. The way a picture is interpreted is unique to the individual.

What or where is the magic in film? Specifications are meaningless when it comes to film, of course all films have different characteristics, but I find that with film, its exposures cannot always be replicated by a digital camera. There is a lifelike and honest feel to shooting on film, never knowing fully if what you captured will make it until its been developed. Is always one of the best and most anticipated moments for me.

Sometimes you like to play with light leaks, what do they represent for you or add to you work? Are they intentional or circumstantial? Light leaks for me have become a force of habit; I’ve certainly not honed the technique to a point where I’m happy. I waste far too much film opening the back of the camera and ruining rolls, but then, sometimes, it really works and I get the effect I’m after. I’m in the process of developing a custom back that will allow a quick slide and exposure to the light, which, I hope, will push that light leak effect to new places.

In your work we can see some really breathtaking landscapes; which characteristics must a place have or what feelings must it arise for you to decide to capture it? I think when you arrive somewhere and its surroundings make you feel like, ‘this place is greater than I’, that’s when I feel like I want to submerge myself in that moment and capture a small part of that initial meeting.

Usually, when stress or negativity meets us, nature is a wise advisor and being outside gives us rest. On which moments is important for you to go and walk outside and what does this offers you? I think all of us, we need that connection with nature, wherever we are, it’s our caveman instinct. For me, personally, I am on a busy schedule every day, I have a family and I run a business and, at times, this all backs up. When it does, I’ll go jump in the ocean where all of that negative f low slowly disappears and is replaced by something very different. Over the past 3 months I have been training to run a marathon in October 2015, running 50 miles a week, mostly along the coastal trails in Cornwall. Running those distances, amongst nature, breathing in fresh air, replaces any stresses with a wide-eyed positivity that offers a similar get away that the ocean gives.

If you had to describe the ocean with three words, which ones would you chose? Vast, Deep and Mysterious Do you think your pictures raise people’s awareness regarding the care of the ocean? Is that what you aim for? This is a really interesting question, kind of a red herring…I have never thought of my work in this way, therefore, in the context of my work, I’m not actively shooting to raise awareness. I would agree that my imagery is often of a very beautiful and colourful view and this show’s our oceans in the best light. This is largely down to shooting subjects in their best capacity and the kind of materiel I present, however over the past few weeks in Cornwall we have had raw sewage pumped into our seas, it’s affecting anyone who goes in the ocean and has changed the landscape to a very different view. Like many people, I do the best I can to highlight the situation of our seas through my channels using my work. Perhaps the best example of how my work has been used is I have provided the imagery for the 2015 Global Wave Conference (globalwaveconference.org), which in context shows the world how beautiful our oceans are and why we need to protect them.

Besides that, which other purposes do you try to fulfil through photography? Documenting life in the various contexts that I shoot is probably one of the more obvious ones, also to continue with my democratic approach to photography, keep focus on allowing my work to grow and be accessible.

How do you see the actual situation the oceans are going through right now? Lately and more than ever before, I have spent much time engrossed in the work of Surfers Against Sewage, largely due to working closely with them on the Global Wave Conference, and with that has come more knowledge. This is all around the same time that raw sewage has been dumped in and around Cornwall. We are so lucky to have various charities around the world fighting for the ocean.

Without awareness, this issue is too big to put into words here. If I look at the oceans in a local way, as it’s happening around me right now, then I would say the situation is in a terrible way and whoever is responsible needs to listen to the people.

In which way would you say the ocean and the arts can be related or linked? Creativity and the ocean work together in a familiar way; often that same feeling that an artist evokes can be said of the sea. Some years ago I put on the ‘ hand plane Art Project’, a universal art show where people from all over the world were asked to draw on a hand plane their interpretation of the sea and what it meant to them. The project pulled the two genres together as one and evoked thoughts and memories of creativity and the ocean. I think the connection is also similar to the question beforehand about being outside and clearing your mind, the same can be said for art in whatever capacity.

How do you feel participating in an exhibition at The Current Gallery? The first space in Barcelona exclusively dedicated to the ocean and the arts. When I heard about The Current Gallery and was subsequently asked to be a part of it, I felt this was a huge deal for me, and I’m very honored to have been asked and to be able to show my work to a wider audience. It’s really great that a gallery is committed to showing this kind of work in a mixed context, but most importantly, with the underline message of ocean awareness, and to be just a small part of that is awesome.

Finally, what projects do you have for what is left of this year?

I’ve got a few exciting projects coming up for this remaining part of the year. There’s an amazing show coming up in Bristol late October/ November and then, later on in the year, I have a collaboration with a New Zealand fashion company, and I’m hoping to open a Pop-Up gallery in London.

Nos citamos con Aritz Aranburu en la sede de Quiksilver en la Barceloneta justo antes de que parta rumbo a California para disputar el Vans US Open, donde ha estado a punto de clasificarse para los cuartos de final. Poco tiempo después tomó otro avión rumbo a Tahití para participar en el Billabong Pro junto a Gabriel Medina, John John Florence y Mick Fanning. Allí llegó hasta la quinta ronda, venciendo a tíos como Mick y Joel Parkinson, ex campeones del mundo. Aritz es probablemente el mejor surfista en la historia de España, tiene claro su rol como embajador de las nuevas generaciones y es conciente de lo afortunado que es por vivir de su pasión. Un hombre que ha cumplido muchos de sus objetivos gracias a su trabajo, talento, energía y dedicación. Hablamos con él sobre su carrera, el reciente accidente de Mike Fanning con un tiburón blanco y el futuro del surf en España.

We met with Aritz Aranburu at Quiksilver’s headquarters in la Barceloneta moments before he climbed on a plane towards California to compete in the Vans US Open, where he almost qualified to the quarterfinals.

Not long after, he jumped on another plane to Tahiti, to participate in the Billabong Pro alongside guys like Gabriel Medina, John John Florence and Mick Fanning. There, he made it all the way to Round 5, beating guys like Mick and Joel Parkinson, former world champions. Aritz is probably the best surfer in Spain’s history, he knows his role as ambassador for the younger generations and is fully aware how lucky he is being able to live from his passion. A man that has accomplished many of his objectives thanks to his hard work, talent, energy and dedication. We talked to him about his career, Mick Fanning’s recent incident with a white shark and the future of surfing in Spain.

¿En qué momento te diste cuenta de que el surf sería más que un hobby para ti? Es muy difícil pensar en un momento en concreto, pero creo que fue a los catorce años, cuando participé en un campeonato internacional en Francia para menores; iba a dicho campeonato desde los diez. Ganar era para mí algo totalmente inalcanzable pero al cuarto año ocurrió. Recuerdo perfectamente la admiración con la que yo que miraba a esa gente que lo ganaba y de repente lo conseguí. Fue allí, además, cuando entré en el equipo de Quiksilver, nos ofrecieron una estructura para que yo pudiera seguir estudiando y, de vez en cuando, hacer algún viaje para aprender de los mejores.

Hacíamos campamentos con Tom Carroll, Gary Elkerton, campeones del mundo; ahí ya empiezas a pensar que si una marca como Quiksilver confía en ti, pues igual tienes futuro. Y, más o menos, creo que todo empezó ahí.

Tras tantos años compitiendo, ¿cuál crees que es la mejor manera de mantenerse motivado? Seguro que hay algunos días en lo que aparece la pereza... La verdad es que no mucho, tengo la suerte de vivir de mi pasión, de lo que más me gusta y aunque días malos los tenemos todos, la verdad es que si alguna vez ocurre me siento un poco estúpido (risas). Cuando me sucede, en seguida le doy la vuelta, porque la verdad es que hay cosas peores, siempre. Si yo no soy positivo, no sé quién podría serlo, ¡vivo de lo que más me gusta hacer! ¿Cómo mantienes el equilibrio entre las competiciones y el free surf? Para mí al final se trata de motivación. Me gusta vivir el surf de las dos maneras; me encanta la competición, fijarme unas metas, porque soy una persona competitiva, y me gusta el circuito profesional, donde te puedes poner las metas más grandes que quieras e ir cumpliéndolas, aunque no siempre lo consigas, otras veces sí, eso te hace crecer como persona. Luego, por otro lado, está el hecho de dejarlo todo y salir con tu tabla, con un amigo a ir a buscar olas por el mundo, y ese es el estilo de vida que más me gusta. La excusa de encontrar una ola nueva te hace conocer nuevas culturas, destinos, gente, y para mí la mejor escuela siempre ha sido viajar. El free surf o las olas buenas como excusa, son una cosa simple en apariencia, pero luego se complica, ya que tienes muchas cosas por aprender en cada lugar.

Este año estuviste participando en el Pipeline llegando a cuartos de final, ¡te fue bastante bien! Pipeline es un campeonato que tiene mucho prestigio, puede que en cuanto a puntos no sea el más importante, pero claro, es Pipeline. Para mí fue un buen comienzo del 2015; me fui a Hawai en el último momento, no estaba seguro de si ir o no, al final vi que en casa tampoco tenía mucho para hacer y me lancé. Salió un campeonato bonito la verdad.

Con respecto a las olas, ¿en cuáles te sientes más fuerte, en las grandes y pesadas? Sí, normalmente me gusta competir y surfear más en olas que te dan ese respeto, por el hecho de hacer crecer tus límites. Cuando te enfrentas a ellos, por un lado existe la sensación de miedo, pero por otra parte quieres superar ese momento. Siempre me ha gustado poder surfear olas grandes y llegar a ser incluso más que la ola. Cuando haces ese surfing en el que te sientes un poco más que la ola, es cuando te sientes fuerte.

Cómo deportista profesional, ¿qué factores crees que afectan al resultado final entre una temporada y otra? Creo que al final, como en todo deporte, la psicología es un factor muy importante y todo

depende de las motivaciones, luego, está por supuesto, la determinación, el tiempo que emplees en cada cosa. Yo he pasado muchísimos años en los que la competición ha sido mi motivación casi total, y me he dedicado plenamente a ello, pero últimamente he intentado buscar un equilibrio entre la competición y los viajes de free surf. Éstos últimos me los tomo incluso como entrenamientos porque psicológicamente me ayudan mucho a estar fuerte para competir. Cada surfista busca su equilibrio, según las motivaciones de su vida, lo que es algo muy personal.

El ataque de un tiburón blanco a Mick Fanning el fin de semana en el J-Bay Open ha conmocionado al mundo del surf, ¿alguna vez has temido el ataque de un tiburón mientras estás en el agua? Sí, bueno, cuando viajas a esos destinos sabes que los tiburones están ahí, entonces de vez en cuando se te pasa por la cabeza. Son ellos los que viven ahí y nosotros los que entramos en su territorio. Siempre pienso por otro lado, que hay más probabilidades de tener un accidente grave en un coche y lo cogemos tranquilamente ¿no? Está claro que las probabilidades crecen según en qué destino estés, pero lo de Mick ya ha sido next level, ha sido una agresión con un tiburón y, bueno, ¡se han peleado, se ha peleado con un tiburón! Eso es como volver a nacer. Mick ha tenido mucha suerte, pues hoy lo puede contar y está de una pieza.

Mañana viajas a California para el Men’s Vans US Open, ¿cómo te preparas antes de una competición? Todo depende. Esta vez, por ejemplo, acabo de volver de Indonesia, donde he estado con mi amigo Kepa Acero. Nos gusta hacer un viaje juntos para surfear una vez al año y esta aventura ha sido muy bonita, nos ha ayudado un montón ‘inspiracionalmente’. No he hecho mucha gimnasia, pero estos pocos días que he estado en casa me he dedicado más al entrenamiento físico, surfeando en olas malas, y así me voy a California, contento porque acabo de vivir una experiencia bonita con Kepa de viaje, y a ver qué pasa. ¿Es normal que se generen expectativas antes de una competición o tratas de mantenerte tranquilo? Intento mantenerme bastante frío; tienes expectativas siempre porque sueñas con ganarlo y es bonito soñar con eso, porque al final si no lo piensas, nunca lo conseguirás, pero luego, cuando llega el campeonato, intento que cada manga sea igual que la otra, ir pasándolas con calma y la mente lo más fría posible. ¿Cómo es la vida viajando tanto? ¿Se complica a veces? Bueno, le das la vuelta. Hay un momento en el que ves que el viaje se te acumula, pero luego por otra parte, yo siempre que entro a un avión aprovecho para planear cosas, es mi momento, ordeno un poco la vida. Es verdad que hay viajes que son un poco más complicados que otros, según quién se siente al lado también (risas).

Además del viaje con Kepa, ¿hay algún otro que esperes todos los años? Me encanta ir a África. Aunque ya he estado en Namibia, me gusta repetir destinos. ¿Y alguno nuevo que tengas en mente para ir a visitar pronto?

Me gustaría viajar a unas islas que están por Japón. Me encanta la cultura japonesa, en general todos los destinos que tienen culturas fuertes.

At which moment did you realize that surfing could be more than a hobby for you? It’s very hard to think about a concrete moment, but I think it was when I was fourteen years old, when I participated in a junior international championship in France; I was competing there since I was ten. Winning for me was something that seemed unachievable, but on my fourth year it happened. I remember perfectly the admiration I felt towards the guys who had won and suddenly, I got there. It was at that moment, as well, when I got into the Quiksilver Team; they offered us a structure for me to keep on studying and, every now and then, make some trip to learn from the best. We used to go camping with Tom Carroll, Gary Elkerton, world champions; at that point I started to think that if a brand like Quiksilver trusted in me, well, I might as well have a chance. And, more or less, I think everything kindled there.

After so many years competing, which do you think is the best way to keep yourself motivated? There must be some days you don’t feel like doing anything… Honestly, not so much, I’m lucky enough to live from my passion, of what I like to do the most, and, although everyone can have a bad day, the truth is that when this ever happens to me, I feel somehow stupid (laughs). But when it happens, I turn it upside down, or downside up, because the truth is that there can be worst things, always. If I’m not positive, then who can be? I make a living doing what I like to do the most!

How do you keep a balance between the contests and free surf?

At the end of the road is all about motivation for me. I like to experience surf in both ways; I love competing, setting goals, because I’m a very competitive person, and I like the professional circuit, because there you can set the biggest goals and start achieving them, although this not always happens, sometimes it does, and it helps you to grow as a human being. Then, on the other hand, there’s the option to leave everything behind, grab your board, and leave with a friend searching for waves around the world, and that kind of lifestyle is the one I like the most. Finding a new wave becomes the perfect excuse to get to know new cultures, places, people, and for me, traveling has always been the best school. Free surfing or looking for good waves might seem like something simple in appearance, but it turns out to be more than that, since you have so many things to learn from each place you visit.

This year you competed at Pipeline, getting all the way to the quarterfinals; you did pretty well! Pipeline is one of the most respected contests, maybe point-wise is not the most important, but anyway, it’s Pipeline. For me, it was a good start to this year; I went to Hawaii at the last minute, I wasn’t sure if I should go or not, and eventually I realized there wasn’t much to do at home, so I went. It turned out to be a nice contest after all.

Regarding waves, on which ones do you feel stronger? It seems to be on the big and heavy ones… Yes, usually I like to compete and ride waves that arise that kind of respect, because it pushes your limits, and when you face them, on one hand you have fear, but on the other you want to overcome that moment. I’ve always enjoyed surfing big waves and achieving to be more than the wave. When you do that type of surfing, where you feel bigger than the wave, is when you feel strong.

As a professional athlete, which factors do you think determine the results between one season and the other? I think, as in any

other sport, psychology plays a vital role and it all depends on the motivation, then, off course, determination and the time you spend doing each thing. I have spent many years where the contests have been almost my only motivation, and I have dedicated myself thoroughly to them, but lately I’ve been trying to find a balance between the contests and the free surf travels. I even consider the latter ones as training, because psychologically they help me a lot to be strong throughout the competitions. Each surfer looks for their own balance, according to their life motivations, something that is absolutely personal.

The attack suffered by Mick Fanning during the J-Bay Open, when a white shark appeared out of the blue, has shocked the surfing world. Have you ever been scared of a shark attack while you’re in the water? Yes, well, when you go to those destinations you know that the sharks are there, so it’s something that crosses your mind. They are the ones that live there, and we are the ones entering their territory. On the other hand, I think that the chances to get in a fatal car accident are bigger, and, regardless, we get in a car everyday anyway, don’t we? It’s obvious the probabilities change depending on where you are, but what happened to Mick has been next level, it was an aggression with a shark, and they fought! The guy fought with a shark! That is like being born again. Mick has been very lucky; today he can tell the story in one piece.

You are leaving tomorrow to California to compete in the Men’s Vans US Open, how do you prepare yourself before a competition like this? It depends. This time, for example, I just arrived from Indonesia, where I was with my friend Kepa Acero. We enjoy taking a surf trip together once a year and this adventure has been very nice, it has helped us a lot inspirationally. I haven’t done much gymnastics, but these few days that I was home I’ve been more dedicated to my physical training, surfing lousy waves, and just like that I leave to California, happy because I just had a nice experience with Kepa on our journey, so we’ll see what happens.

Is it normal to have expectations before a contest or you try to keep it cool? I always try to keep myself focused; you always have expectations because you want to win, and that’s good, because at the end if you don’t want it, you’ll never get it, but then, when the contest starts, I try for each heat to be the same as the one before, go through them calmly, with my mind as focused as possible.

How is life traveling so often? Does it get hard? Well, you must see the bright side. There’s a moment when all the traveling starts accumulating, but then, on the other hand, every time I go inside a plane I take advantage of the time I have to plan stuff; it’s my time, to organize my life a little. Though it’s true some travels are more complicated than others, depending on who seats next to you (laughs).

Besides the trip with Kepa, is there any other you wait year after year to do? I love Africa. Though I’ve already been in Namibia sometimes I like to repeat destinations.

And any new destination you have in mind that you would like to visit soon? There are some islands in Japan that I would like to visit. I love the Japanese culture, in general, any place that has a strong culture.

Barcelona, un viernes de verano. Las temperaturas son altas, al igual que las expectativas. Es el último día de la semana, y esperas tener algo que contar el lunes. Algo que te haga cargar las pilas y que le dé un nuevo significado a eso del carpe diem. Para nosotros, el pasado viernes 10 de julio la elección estuvo clara: Brixton llegaba a Barcelona con la artillería pesada y con ganas de dejar huella en la ciudad. El Brixton Broadcast Barcelona era su apuesta firme para liarla y la Sala Apolo, la base de operaciones. Pero antes, teníamos una misión: presentar a un grupo reducido de prensa e influencers la colección Fall-Winter 2015 y Spring-Summer 2016 de Brixton, una marca que lleva más de 10 años creando escuela por su perfecta fusión entre un estilo de lifestyle verdaderamente urbano, con ADN californiano y una esencia atemporal.

Fieles a sí mismos y sin seguir ninguna tendencia, han conseguido colocarse como una de las firmas de headwear más punteras del mundo, por la calidad de su materiales y la frescura de sus diseños. Después de tener nuestro momento Coachella y conocer los diseños de su Festival Collection o la línea premium Brixton Limited, y de apagar nuestra sed con una Moritz fresquita y uno de los cócteles de brandy que nos ofrecían los barmans de Torres 15, nos agarramos fuerte, y para el Apolo. Después de arrasar en Berlín durante la pasada edición invernal del Bright Trade Show o en Austin, en su parada en la Ciudad Condal prepararon algo especial: una selección del mejor garage canalla a nivel nacional e internacional, con nombres como Wau y Los Arrrghs, The Parrots, Aliment, The Saurs, Thee MVPs, Bazooka y Sultan Bathery.

El Apolo fue un hervidero de suelas quemadas, cerveza en el pelo, pogos sudorosos y decibelios a tope, eso y mucho más: todos los presentes nos dejamos la piel en la pista. Nos quedamos con el gran final que se marcaron The Parrots versionando el clásico Demolición, que a su vez también forma parte del repertorio de Wau y los Arrrghs, como colofón a su arrollador directo. Es la canción perfecta para acabar por todo lo alto (o lo bajo, que es casi mejor). Y así acabaron dos noches en las que Barcelona estuvo en la frecuencia de Brixton: estamos deseando volver a sintonizar.

Barcelona. Friday. Summer. The temperatures are high, our expectations far from low. It’s the last day of the week and we know we must have a good story to tell on Monday, something that will charge our batteries, give a new meaning to that carpe diem bullshit. Fortunately, we had pretty clear what we were going to do on Friday, July the 10th; we had no doubts about it. Brixton was visiting Barcelona, bringing along with them the big guns, the heavy artillery, determined to leave a stamp on the city. The Brixton Broadcast Barcelona was their proposal in order to achieve that, and the Sala Apolo was their operations room. But before the night started, we had a mission: present to a small group of media and influencers the Fall-Winter 2015 and Spring-Summer 2016 collections of the brand. Its been over ten years now that Brixton has been creating unique products that mix perfectly the urban lifestyle with the Californian DNA, all wrapped up together in a timeless essence. True to themselves and without following any trend, they have managed to place the brand as one of the main signatures when it comes to headwear, thanks to the quality of their products and the freshness in their designs. After having our little own Coachella moment, checking out the designs of their Festival Collection or their premium Brixton Limited line, as we sipped down some fresh Moritz or one of the great cocktails brought to us by the bartenders of Torres 15, we hold on tight and headed towards the Sala Apolo for what was left of the night. After sweeping everybody off their feet at Berlin during the most recent winter edition of the Bright Trade Show, or at Austin, for their stay in Barcelona, the Brixton crew prepared something really special for all of us: a selection with the best national and international trash garage bands such as Wau y Los Arrrghs, The Parrots, Aliment, The Saurs, Thee MVPs, Bazooka or Sultan Bathery. Apolo was a boiling pan that night, the shoe soles were burning all over, beer was dripping off our hair and sweaty pogos were going on everywhere; the loud decibels kept us jumping non-stop and believe me, there was much more than that: all assistants left everything on the dance floor. And in our minds it will remain the great memory The Parrots left, playing the classic Demolición, part as well of Wau y los Arrrghs’ repertoire, to close the night. The perfect way to finish on a high note… or low, whatever works for you. And just like that, the two nights where Barcelona was tuned under Brixton’s frequency were over: now we are waiting for a chance to tune in again.

ADIDAS SKATE COPA PH: EMY SATO

El pasado sábado 5 de septiembre teníamos una cita en el SkatePark de Les Corts. ¿El motivo? Los titanes del skate a nivel nacional iban a tener su cara a cara en el adidas Skate Copa BCN y, como en toda buena competición, solo puede quedar uno: el mejor. Y en este caso no solo se iban a casa con la satisfacción de haber vencido a los demás, sino que el equipo ganador será el que vaya a representar a España en la final de la competición, el próximo 19 de septiembre en el mítico The Berrics en California. Y con este argumento, no es de extrañar que los equipos de 15 tiendas de skate de toda España (Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia, Ávila, Murcia, Tenerife…), se dejasen la piel en cada truco.

La dinámica era fácil: jams de cinco minutos en las que los cinco miembros de cada equipo probaban a dar en el clavo y se les daba una puntuación individual. Las tres mejores puntuaciones se sumaban al total, y así, se clasificaban los 8 mejores equipos para la final: un duelo a muerte en formato Play-offs. Y después de un frontside noseblunt o un 360flip casi perfectos, el jurado ya tenía veredicto: el equipo de Tactic Barcelona, capitaneado por el rider de adidas David Castells, es el que se va a California con todos los gastos pagados. Y quien sabe, a lo mejor dentro de unos días tenemos que informar de su victoria ante toda la crême de la crême del skate internacional. ¡Mucha suerte, chicos!

Last Saturday, 5th of September, we had a date we couldn’t miss at the skatepark Les Corts, in Barcelona. The reason? The best national skaters were meeting to compete face to face in the adidas Skate Copa BCN and, as in every good sporting event, only one could win: the best.

In this case, the satisfaction was not only be to beat the others; the winning team will be sent to California to represent Spain in the finals, to be disputed next Saturday, 19th of September, at the mythical skatepark The Berrics. With such a motivation, it was no surprise that fifteen skateshops from all over Spain (Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia, Ávila, Murcia, Tenerife…), gathered their teams together to leave body and soul on the course. The dynamics were simple: five-minute jams, where the five members of each team strived to achieve the best trick. As each rider scored individually, the best three scores from each team were added up and, like this, after everyone had played their part, we had eight teams qualified for the finals: a deathmatch arranged as playoffs. After seeing a frontside noseblunt or an almost perfect 360flip, the jury had its verdict: Tactic Team from Barcelona, leaded by adidas’ rider David Castells, is the one chosen to get to go to California, all expenses covered, to attempt for the glory… and, who knows, maybe in a few days we will have to inform you guys about their victory against the international skateboarding elite. THE CURRENT GALLERY EXHIBITION The Current Gallery, la galería de arte dedicada al mar que pusimos en marcha hace unos meses junto a Twothirds, nos ha salido viajera. El pasado viernes 28 de agosto se plantó en el Aeroclub de l’Empordà con la obra de Julián Lorenzo, Georges Bates, Ryan Tatar, Joni Sternbach y Emil Kozak, llevando así el mar a esos arrozales en medio de la nada donde los atardeceres se contagian del romanticismo de un paseo en avioneta. Julián Lorenzo realizó un live painting que subastamos entre los asistentes con el objetivo de donar los beneficios a Mission Blue, una organización dedicada por completo al cuidado del mar. Y así comenzamos este mes de septiembre, en el que el océano está en nuestro corazón, en nuestras manos y en nuestra conciencia.

The Current Gallery, the only space in the world dedicated to the arts and the ocean, and which was inaugurated a few months ago in Barcelona, has turned out to be quite a traveler. Last Friday, the 28th of August, it established itself at the Aeroclub de l’Empordà, taking with it the amazing pieces of Julian Lorenzo, George Bates, Ryan Tatar, Joni Sternbach and Emil Kozak; and with the pieces, the sea also came along to those paddy fields in the middle of nowhere, where the sunsets are painted with the romanticism of a plane ride. Julian Lorenzo, one of our stars, was in charge of carrying out a live painting, which was put on to auction and allowed us to donate all proceeds to Mission Blue, a NGO dedicated to the care of our oceans. Just like that, September started, with the ocean deep in our hearts, hands and awareness.
