ear Friends, Welcome to the 40th anniversary season of Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival, the region’s premiere professional theater company and provider of educational outreach programming! Forty years of Shakespeare at Lake Tahoe is a remarkable achievement made possible by the visionary founders and leaders of this company, upon whose shoulders we all stand, and supported by the extraordinary generosity of this community, our board of directors, staff, volunteers and the many, many artists who have created hundreds of evenings of magic under the stars. Over the years, Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival has faced many challenges and achieved many successes, and our deep roots in the community have sustained us throughout. As with any story, the drama is told through a thousand small events and a few monumental turning points along the way. A few of those pivotal moments must be recalled in this anniversary season. Special recognition must be given to our partners at the Nevada State Parks who brought the company to Sand Harbor in 1976 and have worked with us ever since to develop one of the most beautiful settings for theater in the world! Bay Visitors Bureau saved the Festival by assuming management of the company. Several leaders from that group have continued to shepherd the company as board members ever since, including Michael Chamberlain, Vicki McGowen and Geno Menchetti, chairman emeritus of the Festival and founder, in 2002, of the D.G. Menchetti Young Shakespeare Program, which has served more than 50,000 students in the subsequent years. The Festival achieved a benchmark in 2000 with the construction of the Warren Edward Trepp stage, funded entirely through private donations following a lead gift from Honorary Founder Warren Trepp. In 2002, the company was invited by the Parasol Tahoe Community Foundation to join several organizations as tenants of the Donald W. Reynolds Community Non-Profit Center, which remains our administrative home to this day. In 2010, we joined forces with Idaho Shakespeare Festival (Boise, Idaho) and Great Lakes Theater (Cleveland, Ohio), becoming part of a dynamic, groundbreaking consortium, nationally recognized as an innovative new model for producing theater. We are proud to announce this unique partnership has been a success, and we enter our third season as a producing organization in a strong position both financially and artistically! The structure of our consortium is
simple and the goals are clear: to realize savings by sharing the total cost of production (sets, costumes, props) among the three theaters; to increase employment for our artists and production teams; and to continue serving the audiences of Lake Tahoe through our season at Sand Harbor as well as the students of Northern Nevada through our long-standing, year-round educational outreach initiatives — including InterACT, our in-school residency program, and the wildly successful D.G. Menchetti Young Shakespeare Program. There simply is not the time or space in this note to thank the thousands of people who have made this 40th anniversary season a reality. As you look through our program and walk through the theater, you will see the names of many who have kept the lights on over the years; imagine that each name represents hundreds of others who also have given their time and passion to this company — to all, our deepest thanks and gratitude for this 40th anniversary! Don’t Get Caught in “ShortSale” Double Jeopardy!
Property owners who may be anticipating a short sale need to know that the federal law adopted in 2007 to protect homeowners from having to pay taxes on mortgage debt forgiveness is due to expire at the end of 2012. Unless Congress extends the law, come 2013 you will have to declare the amount of money your lender forgives in the short sale as income — and pay taxes on it. Here’s how it works: A short sale is recommended during the process of foreclosure if the value of the home is less than what the homeowner still owes on it. With real estate values down across the country, this can become the only alternative for some people who are having trouble keeping up with their payments. During the sale, the lender is said to “forgive” the part of the mortgage that is not covered by selling the house. So, if you owe the lender, say $50,000 more than the short sale brings in, it is essentially written off. Enter the IRS who, until the law was enacted in 2007, would send the homeowner a Form 1099-C, listing that $50,000 as taxable income. Sometimes referred to as a “phantom tax,” it put the homeowner in the unenviable position of paying a tax on their lender’s loss. It’s hard enough for homeowners to walk away from the down payment and other money they have sunk into their house, to take the credit hit, and to know they will not be able to secure another home loan for a while. Being taxed on the money their lender lost, on top of it, seems like adding insult to injury. According to the IRS, mortgage debt forgiveness is available through the end of this year, up to $2 million on a principal residence, or up to $1 million for a married person filing a separate return. This does not apply to debt forgiven on vacation homes, rental property, business property or other kinds of debt. The law also affects debt that is reduced through mortgage restructuring or foreclosure. For more details, research the Mortgage Forgiveness Debt Relief Act (HR3748), visit http://www.irs.

Although President Obama declared in his State of the Union address in January that he has created an entity to look into mortgage abuse, there has been no activity in Congress to extend the Mortgage Forgiveness Debt Relief Act. The banks want to help and, have become much more cooperative with homeowners.

SYNOPSIS
alentine sets off from Verona for Milan to see the world. Valentine’s best friend, Proteus, stays at home because he loves Julia. She is in love with Proteus, but neither knows of the other’s love until Lucetta shows Julia a love letter from Proteus. Proteus is reading her reply when his father, Antonio, sends word to Proteus of his decision to send him to the Duke’s court in Milan to join Valentine. Julia and Proteus take their leave and swear eternal constancy. In Milan, Proteus finds Valentine has fallen in love with Silvia, the Duke’s daughter, and plans to elope with her to foil her father’s plan to marry her to Thurio. Valentine confides his plan to his friend, but Proteus, infatuated with Silvia at first sight, betrays the plan to the Duke and Valentine is banished from Milan. In the wilderness, he encounters a band of outlaws and is elected their leader. Meanwhile, Julia, disguised as a boy, has come to Milan in search of Proteus. Overhearing Proteus declare his passion for Silvia she is devastated but under cover disguises herself, and enters his service as a page. When Proteus sends her with a message to Silvia, Julia is encouraged to find his advances are again rejected and that Silvia remains faithful to Valentine. Silvia escapes into the forest to join Valentine. The Duke and Thurio set out in pursuit, followed by Proteus and Julia. Silvia is captured by outlaws but then rescued by Proteus, who despite seeing she still spurns him, continues to make advances on her. Valentine intervenes and Proteus is forced to confront his act of betrayal. Julia reveals her identity and a reconciliation begins. — Edited by Jonathan Bate and Eric Rasmussen

Joe is excited to be returning to the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival Mainstage this season, having previously appeared as Peter Quince in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Tyrell in Richard III and the Sea Captain/Priest in Twelfth Night. His other roles include the title role in Macbeth, Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet, Benedick in Much Ado About Nothing, Ken in Romeo & Juliet(ish) and Ray in Lone Star for the Nevada Shakespeare Company; Johnny “the Priest” in Anna Christie at the Metropolitan Playhouse; Terrance in Ravioli at the Royal Exchange Theatre and Dr. Spinoza in Cabbages at Contact Theatre. Neil Brookshire* Valentine Originally from Wyoming, Neil worked with the Idaho Shakespeare Festival for eight seasons: Stephen in Major Barbara, Edgar in King Lear, Orlando in As You Like It and others. With Great Lakes Theater, he portrayed Cliff in Cabaret, Tranio in The Taming of the Shrew and Valentine in The Two Gentlemen of Verona. He has worked with Boise Contemporary Theater, Company of Fools (Idaho), Idaho Dance Theatre, Opera Idaho and Seattle Novyi Theatre. Film credits include The Pact, now screening in festivals around the country. He has a MFA in acting from Northern Illinois University, and he is founder of Dirt Hills Productions, featuring original audio theater and other creative works.
Her credits include Little Red Ridinghood in Into the Woods, Shelley Parker in Bat Boy: The Musical and Snug in A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Great Lakes Theater and Idaho Shakespeare Festival. Other favorite productions include Hurricane (NYMF), The Who’s Tommy (European Tour) and Carlotta in the non-union premiere of The Phantom of the Opera (Baldwin Wallace University). Michael crab the dog Michael is a graduate of the Truckee Meadows Dog Training Club of Reno. He has been a certified therapy dog with Therapy Dogs Inc. and a Paws 4 Love member since 2008. His philanthropic endeavors include visiting local hospitals and extended care facilities, and working with underprivileged youth programs. He is an ambassador for his breed and gives back by raising money for wayward bully breeds. His greatest passion is spending his time with children and entertaining veterans. Michael first caught the acting bug when he co-starred in a local commercial for Scraps Dog Bakery. He now aspires to the stage and screen.

Andrew Pongracz Percussion Andrew Pongracz is the principal percussionist with the Cleveland Chamber Symphony and timpanist with the Cleveland Pops Orchestra. With Great Lakes Theater he has played for A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Into the Woods, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Bat Boy: The Musical, Cabaret and The Two Gentlemen of Verona. Andrew has a BA from Hiram College and a master of music degree from Cleveland State University. He teaches on the music faculty at Hiram. He lives in Lakewood, Ohio, with his wife, Brenda, and their sons, Alexander and Christopher.
Lee Stark* Julia Lee is thrilled to reprise the role she played last summer at Great Lakes Theater and Idaho Shakespeare Festival. A resident of Chicago, she has appeared there at Steppenwolf, Victory Gardens, American Theater Company, Chicago Shakespeare and the Goodman, most recently in The Iceman Cometh (Goodman) with Nathan Lane and Brian Dennehy. Critics throughout history have, predictably, disagreed about the merits of The Two Gentlemen of Verona, dating its composition — according to their taste for the play — as either Shakespeare’s first (those who prosecute the play as a young writer’s sketch), or as a full-blown masterpiece written just after Love’s Labor’s Lost. Isaac Asimov dismisses the play in an off-hand way as “perhaps the most forgettable” of the early comedies. Harold Bloom cautions us “never to under-estimate Shakespeare,” and goes on to assert “we have yet to understand, a very experimental play.” “Two Gents” points toward the greatness that will come from this “journeyman” writer. The double plot (experimental in itself?) weaves together two popular Renaissance stories: the faithless friend (Proteus, Valentine, Silvia) and the faithless lover (Proteus, Julia, Silvia). In the hands of a lesser artist, this material would hold little more than historical interest for us now. But Shakespeare’s genius is to take on familiar forms and reinvent them, sounding great depth even in the shallowest of ponds. Michael Chybowski: Lighting Designer Michael Chybowski has designed The Two Gentlemen of Verona at both Great Lakes Theater and Idaho Shakespeare Festival. Recent work in theater includes The Crucible and The Tempest, both at Hartford Stage, and in dance includes Beaux for San Francisco Ballet and the premiere of A Choral Fantasy for the Mark Morris Dance Group. Other new work includes the restoration of The Angels of Swedenborg for Ping Chong and Company and Glengarry Glen Ross at the Gate Theatre in Dublin. Michael was the head of lighting at the Brandeis University professional theatre training program until its demise this spring. He has received the American Theatre Wing design award, two Lucille Lortel awards and an Obie award for Sustained Excellence.
Ryan Fielding Garrett: Musical Director Ryan is delighted to make his Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival debut! Star Moxley: Costume Designer Star has worked the past 30 years designing many memorable productions as a resident costume designer for Idaho Shakespeare Festival, as well as Great Lakes Theater, Idaho Theater for Youth and Boise Contemporary Theater. Star’s costume designs for Hamlet and Macbeth have been awarded and exhibited internationally. She is a recipient of the Mayor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts. She recently has re-emerged in the visual art scene, and she is an Artist in Residence with the Boise City Arts program creating multimedia installations. Chris is pleased to return to Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival for his 12th season. Chris worked with a previous production company for six years as a designer and then returned to LTSF as technical director. When not in Lake Tahoe, Chris resides in Grass Valley, Calif., and works as the Nevada Joint Union High School District’s theater manager, running the district’s two theaters and teaching students how to operate the theater for a wide variety of productions.
Mark Cytron: Technical Director Mark is returning for his third season at Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival. Mark also holds the position of technical director at Great Lakes Theater in Cleveland, Ohio, and Idaho Shakespeare Festival. He enjoys the opportunity to work here at Sand Harbor, in one of the most beautiful theaters in the world. He earned his BA in Theater from Beloit College.
Christopher D. Flinchum: Production Manager Chris joined Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival in 2010 and celebrates his third season with the company. Chris also is the production manager of LTSF’s partner companies, Idaho Shakespeare Festival and Great Lakes Theater. He has a long history with GLT, serving as production stage manager on more than 20 productions over seven seasons. Chris also served as director of production for Cleveland Opera for two seasons. He has toured nationally with The Acting Company’s musical productions of The Comedy of Errors and O, Pioneers, concluding with an Off-Broadway run. Other New York credits include productions for Lincoln Center Institute, the American Symphony Orchestra, the Women’s Project and Mannes Opera. Chris holds a BFA from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts.
Alisha Glasser: Company Manager Alisha is excited to be back in beautiful Lake Tahoe for her second season with the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival! Last summer, she worked as the production assistant on Twelfth Night. She has worked with Great Lakes Theater since 2007 as the production associate. Charles Fee: Director/ Producing Artistic Director 2012 marks Charlie’s third season as producing artistic director of Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival. This season, he directs The Two Gentlemen of Verona by William Shakespeare. Charlie holds a unique position in the American theater as producing artistic director of three, independently operated, professional theater companies, including Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival, Idaho Shakespeare Festival in Boise, Idaho (since 1991), and Great Lakes Theater in Cleveland, Ohio (since 2002). His leadership has created a dynamic and groundbreaking producing model for the American theater in which plays are shared between the three companies, extending the artistic lives of productions, increasing opportunities for artists to work in multiple venues over longer periods of employment and resulting in lower production costs for each of the companies. Prior to his work in Nevada, Idaho and Ohio, he served as artistic director of Sierra Repertory Theatre in Sonora, Calif. He has worked with such companies as the Old Globe, La Jolla Playhouse, the Milwaukee and Missouri Repertory Theaters, Actor’s Theatre of Phoenix and the Los Angeles Shakespeare Festival. Under Charlie’s tenure, the Festival’s in Boise and Cleveland have completed capital campaigns in excess of $30 million dollars. He has garnered significant awards for artistic leadership: in Boise these include the 1995 and 2001 Mayor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts; the 1996 and 2006 FUNDSY awards; and the 2000 Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts. Cleveland awards include the Northern Ohio Live Award and, in 2009, he was the recipient of the Cleveland Arts Prize’s Martha Joseph Award. In addition to his work with the festivals in Nevada, Idaho and Ohio, Charlie is active within the community, having served on the board of the Boise Metro Chamber of Commerce, as a member of the Boise Downtown Rotary Club and as a special lecturer at Boise State University. He received his BA from the University of the Pacific and a MFA from the University of California, San Diego. Charlie shares his peripatetic life with an incredibly supportive family, his wife, Lidia, and 17-year-old daughter, Alexa.

Bob Taylor joined Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival as executive director in June 2010. In addition to his duties in Lake Tahoe, he remains the executive director of Great Lakes Theater in Cleveland, Ohio, a position he has held since July 2003. In his role for both theaters, he manages a number of areas, including finance, development, human resources, planning, and general administration. Before coming to GLT, he worked as business manager for several for-profit and not-for-profit organizations, including Cleveland’s historic Karamu House. Bob has an MBA from the Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University and an undergraduate degree from Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, Mich. Bob is a Fellow of the 2004 Executive Program for Nonprofit Leaders in the Arts, a program co-sponsored by National Arts Strategies and Stanford Graduate School of Business. Bob is a member of the 2011-2013 Chief Executive Program of National Arts Strategies, a three-year program of 100 arts leaders from across the country who have been invited to work together and develop creative solutions to the problems facing arts organizations that will reverberate throughout the cultural sector. Bob has served as mentor to graduate students from Case Western Reserve University’s Mandel School of Nonprofit Management, and he regularly is asked to speak on career opportunities in theater management. Bob has sung with the North Coast Men’s Chorus since 1990, and he is a past board president and business manager of that organization.

Midsummer Camp
A Summer Theater Camp Series for Students Ages 4-18 Our Midsummer Camp immerses students in fun, interactive and educational theaterbased activities. The series of weeklong summer theater camps affords students a unique opportunity to work with and learn from the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival’s professional actors/teaching artists in a safe and supportive environment. Featuring exciting activities for the young actor in your family, our Midsummer Camp introduces students to the extraordinary works of William Shakespeare, provides a place for participants to sing and dance their hearts out and enables each attendee to develop their talents. D.G. Menchetti Young Shakespeare Program
A FREE Interactive One-Hour Performance Adapation for Families Since 2002, the D.G. Menchetti Young Shakespeare Program has entertained children and their families around the region. Join us this summer as we present an hour-long adaptation of William Shakespeare’s The Two Gentlemen of Verona, specifically designed for children and adults alike! From July 30 to August 9, this program presents an interactive, exciting interpretation of The Two Gentlemen of Verona, created with the young audience member in mind. This production, set in the 1920s, is a tale of friendship, love, betrayal and reconciliation. With great costumes, music, audience interaction and, of course, some of Shakespeare’s most hilarious characters, it promises to be fun for the whole family! This production is directed by Festival Director of Education Joe Atack, and it features a fabulous cast of professional actors and young aspiring actors training and learning from their cast mates.
